Book Description
When Danny Gregory's life was turned upside down by tragedy, he learned to cope by teaching himself to draw. The result was a complete transformation of his life, his priorities, his career, and the way he saw the world. In handwritten chapters full of his lush watercolor illustrations, Danny now offers readers a program for reconnecting to their own creative energies, using drawing as an example. He gently instructs us in the art of allowing ourselves to fail, giving up the expectation of perfection and opening our eyes to the beauty around us. The result is the permission to express ourselves fully and take part in the creative process without fear. Artist or not, readers of all stripes will find inspiration in this unique and beautiful book.

Awesome Fun Book.......2007-10-14
I love this book, I keep it handy and play in it often. I like the creative ideas, the thought provoking concepts. Sometimes if I'm stuck I pick it up, thumb through it until I see something that interests me and use it to jumpstart my own art. If I am in the mood to create something but don't know what this book gives something to do and generally leads me in other directions. And sometimes I just pick it up an read though it for entertainment. I wish I had bought it sooner.
amazing.......2007-10-09
I love love LOVE this book. I have been art jouraling for about 6 years now and I've had a block for a while now. This book did the trick. Lots of good ideas. Also this book got here so fast I didn't even know what it was at first:) good stuff.
Great book for Drawing Inspiration.......2007-08-20
This was a good, inspiring book about drawing and the power it can have in your life. Mr. Gregory worked in advertising for many years and finally gave it up to become an artist, and began keeping sketchbooks as a way to grow. He gives lots and lots of examples and tips on what you can do yourself to enhance your creativity and draw more. His drawings are beautiful and for the most part his prose is very upbeat and made me want to get out there and draw.
I do have one quibble, though, and that's a tiny hint of snobbery in some of his text. For the most part he'll say "do your own thing" or "whatever feels right for you", which I think is the proper way to approach making artwork, but then he'll come out with something like, "only draw in ink" like there's something wrong with pencil. And "you have to go to New York because that's where it's at" which is utter nonsense for many people. This is the kind of thing that makes one think they have to do something a certain way, but to me making art is so personal that I think one should use whatever technique or style they wish.
That being said, I would definitely recommend this book for a good kick in the butt to get out there and get drawing!
Making drawing accessible.......2007-07-07
This is my favorite book as an introduction to illuminated journals. I tried books on "visual" or "creative" journaling, but for me, I just can't connect with abstract blocks of color and shape as symbols of specific insights or emotions. I'm a writer, a words person, but sometimes words just aren't enough for me for capturing a moment. So I looked at other books on illuminated journals, but they're so beautifully rendered by talented and experienced artists that they were too intimidating for me.
Then I found this book. Danny Gregory is a little overlong at the start when he talks about the value of creativity in general. (If you've picked up the book at all, you probably don't need that much persuading.) But once you pick up a pen, he really gets going. He covers the basics of drawing, and I love his analogy linking learning to draw with learning to drive. I also like that he asks you to dare to make mistakes by using a pen instead of a pencil. He doesn't even have you use an actual "journal" at first so you can comfortable with drawing.
I also like that he keeps the book simple throughout. A lot of these types of books have you off to the art supply store with a *list* within the first 2 or 3 chapters. Here, all you'll ever need is a black pen, and maybe some color pens or thicker pens later.
I was surprised to learn that as drawing goes, I'm not all that bad, and I'm certainly good enough for my journals.
A Review from Texas.......2007-06-28
I LOVE this book. I have dabbled at drawing but found it more work than pleasure. When I started reading Creative License I realized that it could be fun and relaxing. "Don't erase your mistakes" was a very liberating statement to me. Now I can't wait to see something that begs me to get my pen and paper out and DRAW!

Book Description
"Someone's going to call your bluff someday, Venetia -- you'd better hope it's not a handsome man."
-- Mrs. Charlotte Harris, headmistress
Lady Venetia Campbell's visit to her childhood home in Scotland takes a dramatic turn when she's kidnapped at pistol point by her father's sworn enemy. Sir Lachlan Ross is widely feared in his guise as The Scottish Scourge, but Venetia remembers her former neighbor as a handsome youth whose attentions she craved. Now a wickedly sexy man, Lachlan's appeal is even more intoxicating...and much more dangerous. Though Lachlan tries to treat her as his foe, his scorching kisses tell another story. And despite his plan to use her as a weapon against her father, Venetia is determined that Lachlan's lust for revenge will be trumped by an even more powerful desire....

Angst and true love in the Highlands.......2007-09-28
There are still a few romance writers that I still enjoy these days, who can turn out a novel that goes a bit farther than a lot of billing and cooing in various historical costumes and settings. One of the more critical aspects for me is to have a heroine and hero who actually matter -- I'm not talking about social status or any of that fluff, but rather that they have distinct characters and motivations to them. Otherwise, a novel will just fall flat and be very forgettable.
Lady Venetia Campbell is the only child of the Earl of Duncannon. While she was born in Scotland, she has only dim memories of the place, and has spent most of her life in London. And despite several offers of marriage, she has refused them all -- she wants to marry someone that will care for her herself, not the wealth that she can provide. When the opportunity comes to visit Edinburgh during the festivities for the visit of King George IV, Venetia eagerly takes the opportunity to go.
But little does she know that she's about to become a pawn for revenge. There are rumors that the Scottish Scourge is dead, but others claim that the notorious highwayman is still about. When Venetia meets a strapping, handsome Highlander in his regimentals at a masked ball, she can hardly resist the charm that he seems to have. That will quickly change when he has the audacity to kidnap her.
Soon enough she finds out that her abductor is a friend of her childhood -- Sir Lachlan Ross -- and he has quite a quarrel with her father, the earl. Enough to where he demands a hefty ransom for her return. What he didn't count on was that Venetia would be enticing and spirited, and more than a match for him.
How all of this comes to a resolution is what keeps this a page turner. The romance between Lachlan and Venetia is one of equals, and the heroine gives just as good as she gets, with enough fire between them to set a forest ablaze. There are plenty of complications to move the story along, with several dark family secrets, real reasons for the hero to have his plot for revenge, and plenty of actual detail for the reader to think about, and give the story a believable base.
In fact, it's the extra details that Sabrina Jeffries brings to the story that sold it to me. In 1822, King George IV made a visit to Scotland, where the events were organized by none other than Sir Walter Scott (the former Prince Regent was very fond of his novels), and the wearing of tartan and what customs we think of as Scottish today were introduced. The visit was wildly popular. Sadly, however, the custom of Scottish landlords evicting the tenant farmers from their lands to introduce sheep farming was also wildly popular -- the devastating results of this can still be seen in Scotland today, and how it came to be that so many people in the United States and Canada have Scottish ancestry. Another interesting subplot involves the art of distilling whiskey. Most of this is covered in the author's afterword.
This was a fun read, perfect for light reading and a pair of lovers that have both charm and plenty of spirit to them. An excerpt from Jeffries' next novel is provided as well. In any case, this one is going to be kept, always a positive factor for me.
Four stars overall. Recommended.
A solid, sensual Scottish tale!.......2007-08-18
Maybe it's a little of my own Scottish blood, but I'm a sucker for Scots! This is one of my favorite of the School for Heiresses series; it even touches upon some of the characters in the previous books (but this book can be read independently). Venetia Campbell is kidnapped upon her visit to Scotland by her childhood neightbor, Lachlan Ross, as he attempts to demand the repayment of an outstanding family loan from her father. The story involves their journey to the Scottish Highlands, and the conflicting relationship of Venetia and Lachlan. There are some great historical accounts of the painful economical strife of the Scottish highlands that we learn through Venetia's eyes (she was raised in London). While their eventual romantic relationship can be predicted, there are some unseen plot twists nonetheless. Overall an enjoyable read with a solid story with sensual touches that keeps the pages turning!
a great author, an okay book.......2007-08-18
As soon as I started reading this book, I knew I was in good hands. Sabrina Jeffries is a master author. I loved her language and the interesting backgound. The characters were fleshed out and hot.
However, by the second half of the book, I felt that the story was kinda finished, as in "I got it. Done. Thank you, Ms. Jeffries!" But considering the subplots hadn't been resolved yet, I had to sit down for another 100 pages. So I rate this book a 4 star. But seeing that i am not the only one who felt this author was a pro, I ordered more of Ms. Jeffries books and hope to be wowed like other readers.
O.k reading.......2007-08-06
This was one of my first books by this author. I thought it was written very well. The story line was predictable, but enjoyable none the less.
Disappointing.......2007-08-03
I've read and enjoyed other books in this series and saw the good reviews for this one, so I bought it and read it. Maybe I was expecting too much, but the plot and characters seemed all too predictable. I'm also getting tired of all the precipitate sex, especially for the period. How about the characters getting to know and like one another first? Maybe some of these authors should reread Georgette Heyer'; she really develops her characters.

4 Short stories.......2007-08-14
I think there should be a different rating system for short stories. LOL
There's just not much to them, yet they can be fun to read at times when you want something quick.
This book contains:
1. The Awakening by Christine Feehan. It's the first in the feline/rainforest series on cat people. To my knowlege, you can only find it here. This was Brandt and Maggie's story and I enjoyed it very much.
2. Widow's Auction by Sabrina Jeffries
Cute. And I found a new author to read from this short story.
3. Luisa's Desire by Emma Holly. Cute and another new author for me.
4. Mr. Speedy by Elda Minger Gosh, I have to admit I don't remember anything about this story and I'm too lazy to go to my libary and look it up. Sorry.
Ton's of fun!!!.......2005-12-10
I love the short compilations as it gives a great insight to others authors I might be interested in, I bought this book for the feehan story and have loved the others just as much!!! I love happy endings and all these stories come from different time periods so it is a wonderfully happy jouney thru this book!!!
if you looking for a taste of something this one is a great first step!!!
totally enjoyable!!
Good book to travel with.................2005-08-18
I bought this book because of Christine Feehan and to also add this book to my collection. This book came with me on my trip overseas. I must say that I had enjoyed 3 out of the 4 stories in this book. I read this book in the month of July which took me about a week to finish.
I'm going to start with Christian Feehan. This novel is base in the jungle, in Borneo, and we are dealing with wereanimals. Maggie Odessa inherited properties from her biological parents. While there she learns a little secret that changes her life forever and along the way meets her lover (who by the way is sexy), the attraction with these two is very intense. Ms. Feehan had put alot of sexually tension between these two characters which comes to a point you yourself might feel it. I love the part when both of them were in the kitchen drinking the nectur juice that was hot.
Down the list of favorites would be Elda Minger's. First time reading anything of her. Her story is about a female reporter who goes undercover to get a story about an all male seminar concerning seduction. While doing this, she is introduced to the bachelor of her dreams but is forced to continue her role as a man. The story was cute but I thought the sex was on the dry side.I won't be running to get her books no time soon.
Next would be Sabrina Jeffries'whom is also my first read. This story is about a widow by the name of Isobel who heads a council at an all boys school. Isobel and Lord Justine always sees differintly about what is best for the school. Things finally come to a head and the council has to choose between either her plan or her rivals plan concerning a factory at the school. This throws her into a "mood" and her friend, who is also on the council, attempts to help her experience a little JOY in life. The friend offers to take Isobel to a Widows Auction where women are "sold" to the highest bidder for a night of passion. Her rival, Lord Justin, just happens to be there and wins her for the night. I thought it was really interesting how both of them pretened that they didn't know each other. The chemistery between them was loving.
My least favorite, sorry to say, Emma Hollys, also first read from her. Story is about Luisa who travels to the far off land of Tibet to find out if the monks can cure her of her need for blood. While at the temple, she meets a monk who is about to make his final vows and finds something that she has been without her whole life. To me I thought it was a bit cold.
Don't get me wrong it's a good book which has its weak point and its strong point for each individual reader. But a type of books like this your not garuntee 100% fulfillment from each and every author (unless you know them all).
Great Stories!.......2005-01-17
Fantasy has four short stories in it and I loved every single one!
The Widow's Auction by Sabrina Jeffries is about a lonely widow who on her friend's urging disguises herself and puts herself up for auction! A one-night only bid that for Isobel Lamberton will change how she feels about sex forever. Only things don't work out quite how she plans when the man who bids on her is her rival, a man she goes toe to toe with on decisions concerning her late husband's boys' school. This story was just wonderful.
Luisa's Desire by Emma Holly is about a woman vampire who fears the necessity of drinking blood to stay alive so she travels to Tibet, to a refuge inhabited by monks who can hopefully help her curb her unnatural cravings. There she meets a man who has to choose between her and the emotion she rises within him and his chosen path. Very delightful read.
Mr. Speedy by Elda Minger was probably my favorite in the bunch, its about a woman writer who goes undercover to an all-male seminar called The Swiftest Seduction, a seminar boasting it will teach men how to get in a woman's pants within 24 hours! Miranda cuts her hair and borrows her friend's clothes to slide into this seminar undetected. Her womanly instincts are sorely tried though when she finds herself with a roomate who could knock her socks off! Jake is at this seminar with plans for a story himself, and when he meets "Randy" decides the "Little guy" needs to be taken under his wing. This story is funny and heartwarming. I absolutely loved it!
The Awakening by Christine Feehan is about a vet who goes into the jungle looking for her inheritance. What she didn't expect to find was that her inheritance included a legacy that inabled her to change into a leopard. And that her mate was waiting for her, and was ready to help her make the change. This was also a good story.
Basically, I recommend this book b/c I loved all the stories in it. They all had good endings that left you with a good feeling and cute little plots. If you want to pass the time with pleasure, pick this book up. You can't go wrong!
A very sexy anthology!.......2004-06-28
I bought Fantasy because Emma Holly was featured in the anthology, but I was pleasantly surprised with two other writers in the book. I've never read anything by Sabrina Jeffries and Christine Feehan before, and their erotic stories in this book enthralled me from beginning to end. Jeffries's The Widow's Auction is my favorite story in the book. This Victorian novella centers on a young widow's desire to shatter her boredom by selling herself at a widow's auction. However, she hadn't anticipated that her buyer, the luscious Lord Justin, would give her pleasure so insatiable that one night wouldn't be enough. Christine Feehan's The Awakening is about two passionate were-cats who are in danger of being hunted and losing one another as a result. Emma Holly's Luisa's Desire is a paranormal romantica set in the seventeenth century. Luisa is an "upyr" who wants to end what she considers to be a curse. She no longer wants to crave human blood, so she seeks the help of a Tibetan monk hoping that he will give her spiritual guidance and peace. However, she hadn't anticipated the pleasure the monk supplies. And last but not least, Elda Minger's Mr. Speedy is a fun contemporary romantica about a reporter posing as a man at a how-to sex seminar. She wants to do an expose on the establishment, but gets more than she bargains for...
Sabrina Jeffries and Christine Feehan supply the best novellas here. Emma Holly's novella is quite erotic, but this isn't her best work. Luisa's Desire doesn't have the same cachet as Personal Assets, Beyond Seduction, Hunting Midnight, The Love Slave, and the erotic novels she wrote for Black Lace. She is still among my favorite authors though. I am glad that I picked up this book, for I've discovered two rather talented romantica authors. I will definitely give their novels a whirl. All in all, Fantasy is an erotic, sensual and romantic tour de force that guarantees to burn your sheets. Highly recommended...
Book Description
Extensively updated and revised for 2006, this 504-page new edition maintains its strong focus on San Francisco, but expands greatly its coverage of the entire region, especially Silicon Valley. Of the 174 pages devoted exclusively to discussion of neighborhoods and communities, 52% describe San Francisco neighborhoods and North Bay communities, while 48% focus on the East Bay, Peninsula, and South Bay towns. This edition also includes a new, detailed map of San Jose designed to accompany the in-depth treatment of each of its neighborhoods, reflect the importance of the city, and complement the more broadly focused South Bay area map.
From Santa Rosa to San Francisco to Vallejo, from Walnut Creek to Oakland to Newark, and from San Bruno to San Jose to Los Gatos, this Newcomer's Handbook® provides its readers with the most up-to-date information on housing styles, costs, and trends; redevelopment; and all the other niceties of Bay Area life, including education! and childcare, transportation, cultural life, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
covers just about every aspect of living in and around San Francisco.......2007-08-04
The Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in the San Francisco Bay Area covers just about every aspect of living in and around San Francisco. I mean everything! Including "Moving and Storage," "Getting Settled," "Children and Education," "Sports and Recreation," "Transportation" and everything in between, this thick book answers almost any question about San Francisco.
The introduction to the book is just as cool: "San Francisco is the land of the 49er Gold Rush, the Great 1906 earthquake, and the missionary expeditions of the Spanish; it is the birthplace of Levi's jeans and home of the railroad tycoon Leland Stanford; it is host to one of the greatest feats of engineering, the Golden Gate Bridge, and as a cultural epicenter, it fueled the hippie flower-power revolution, gave rise to Rolling Stone magazine, and played host to beat generation poets." Geez, now I want to move to San Francisco!
This guide to "America's melting pot" provides information about the local lingo, so you will not feel too much like an out-of-towner. For example, "The Haight" is the famous Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, "The City," always capitalized, "is the way natives and local newspapers refer to San Francisco" and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is "the under-and-above ground subway-style train network that connects the East Bay and peninsula with San Francisco."
This guide also provides detailed information concerning the many municipalities of San Francisco, including web sites, area codes, zip codes, post offices, police stations, emergency hospitals, libraries, public schools, community resources and public transportation. The "Cultural Life" section is also pretty cool, providing tons of information about film festivals, music, theater, ballet and dance, restaurants, nightclubs, comedy, art, museums and anything else you can think of. San Francisco is one cool town, and this book is undoubtedly the perfect guide to moving there!
Accurate and helpful.......2006-11-10
We found this handbook to be very accurate and very helpful in our move to the bay area. The writing style is clear and easily digestible.

Didn't like this one as much as the first two. It moved to fast from meeting to sleeping. Maybe she was ready to be finished with the brothers.

Fans of Ms. Jeffries' ROYAL BROTHERHOOD SERIES have been waiting for the story of Gavin Byrne, one of three half-brothers who are the sons of England's Prince Regent. These half-noble brothers have gotten into all types of scrapes, known countrywide as notorious rogues-in their personal lives as much as their professional ones. The series began with Alexander Black, Earl of Iversley, in the book In the Prince's Bed (Royal Brotherhood). Second brother Marcus North, Viscount Draker, had his story told in To Pleasure a Prince (Royal Brotherhood). Now comes Gavin Byrne's chance to tell his story with ONE NIGHT WITH A PRINCE.
Gavin, the well-known-and sometimes despised-owner of the Blue Swan Men's club, a gaming house, sets out to exact revenge. As young, royal, rash princes seem inclined to do, Gavin takes advantage of the opportunity to enlist the aid of a woman. Lady Christabel, Marchioness of Haversham, is a widow on a mission to rescue letters that could destroy both her father and Prince Regent. She agrees to do the unthinkable-pose as Gavin's mistress in order to save her family's reputation, and that of the Prince.
The plot of ONE NIGHT WITH A PRINCE gets complicated-Gavin, for example, was the one who came to collect Christabel's late husband's debt, and got shot at for his efforts. Christabel wants the secret letters to keep her father from being sent to the gallows-Gavin wants them because he hates his biological father, Prince Regent, and resents the way he turned his mother away.
When Alexander and Marcus, Gavin's half-brothers, urge him to go into alliance with Christabel, he's wary. Once he decides to do so, his main goal-aside from ruining his father-is to get the proper Lady Christabel into his bed. This heroine is no fainting spinster, however, and the tables are soon turned. When all is said and done, which will Gavin Byrne find more important-the destruction of the man he's hated all of his life, or the safety of the woman he's come to love?
ONE NIGHT WITH A PRINCE is historical romance at its best. Engaging characters, attention to historical detail, and humorous dialogue will keep you reading long into the night. I'm sorry to see this trilogy end, but I'm sure Ms. Jeffries has something else planned for our reading pleasure in the near future.
Love it..........2007-04-30
All of the Royal Brotherhood Series are great and this book is a great ending to that series. It is hilarious and hott and I can't wait to read it again. I couldn't stop laughing and couldn't put the book down. Words can not express how great this book is and again like the other two books before this one I would recommend this to anyone.
Very Fine and Very Naughty! If you like complex and clever plots - this one is masterfully woven........2007-03-25
A respectable young widow, Christabel, agrees to pretend to be the new mistress of a gaming club owner in order to attend a house party hosted by a man who obtained some letters that now put her family's reputation in danger. Her good-for-nothing gambling husband stole the letters from her and sold them to cover gaming debts before his untimely death. Christabel is totally inexperienced in society and still quite innocent having never learned about physical pleasure from her husband. Needless to say her reputation will be seriously damaged by the role she decides to take on, but she hopes to steal back the letters and save her father from a very bad outcome.
Gavin, the notorious gaming club owner, reluctantly agrees to the challenge because he is offered a significant reward. He then finds himself extremely attracted to the feisty widow who had once shot at him when he came to collect on her husband's gambling debts! He takes it upon himself to supply Christabel with gowns and train her so that she appears convincingly as his mistress and is able to play whist well enough to help him win the week long tournament with his fast set of friends. This is also the perfect opportunity to try to seduce the inexperienced widow and he uses every charm and wile he has to entice her in his bed and become his mistress in fact.
The scandalous house party is a dangerous environment for Christabel who needs Gavin's tutelage and protection, but in turn her strong attraction to Gavin makes her increasingly susceptible to the masterful seduction of this "Prince of Sin". Those attending the party are a group of cynical, jaded and often lewd characters, dedicated to winning the money pot at all costs. Many are downright devious and manipulative individuals who play nasty psychological games with each other to unsettle their gaming opponents or rivals for affection. The party host, Lord Stokely, is by far the most devious of them all, ruthlessly determined to seduce Christabel and steal her from Gavin whether she returns his affections or not.
Christabel and Gavin attempt to search for the letters while all else is going on full tilt. In addition to the card game, the plot revolves around several outrageous wagers and related negotiations, with quite unexpected outcomes and many tense moments leading up to each resolution. On top of that, Christabel is confronted with several ex-mistresses of Gavin's, some of whom are willing to pull all sorts of underhanded stunts to embarrass Christabel or undermine her relationship with Gavin. This all results in a fast-paced, intricate story with lots of fabulous twists and turns.
Christabel finds herself in an environment where she can barely keep her head above water, but somehow her wit and feisty bravery get her through the worst of the booby traps, and Gavin is increasingly drawn to her honest and incorruptible nature. Much to his surprise, Gavin finds himself very jealous of the lewd attentions of his friends/cohorts towards his fresh supposed mistress. This is a totally new experience for him - he believes himself to be so jaded as to be a "man without a soul" and all his many prior mistresses were cynical and dissipated women only interested in his money, gifts and sexual prowess. As the game continues Gavin learns enough to realize that the letters can give him the much desired opportunity to avenge a lifetime of wrong done to himself and his mother, but would destroy Christabel and her father.
The interactions between Gavin and Christabel are marvelous. There are wonderful scenes where Gavin discovers that somehow Christabel is able to get him to admit his new and increasing feelings for her in the throes of passion. This makes the love scenes superb -- Gavin the master seducer and legendary lover is less and less in control. Especially hilarious is how several times Gavin just can't believe the words that came out of his mouth right after he says them. I suppose that is part of what made the book so delightful for me -- the hero and heroine constantly surprising and shocking themselves and each other as the stakes get higher and higher in this marvelous naughty and dangerous whirlwind romance.
This book even had me looking up the rules for whist! I look forward to reading it again.

Unlikeable Heroine.......2007-05-12
Echoing the reviews of other readers, I could not get myself to finish this book because the heroine was so unlikeable. I think the author was trying to make her out to be a very strong female character with her "Amazon" body but she turned out to just be plain annoying. And somehow, the hero finds her annoying personality intriguing, along with her "Amazon" body...
The addition of making the main characters quote Shakespeare to each other in every other chapter was also extremely cheesy...
The Best Characters.......2006-10-02
Griff is the owner of a huge shipping company that he founded and built from nothing. He has always been called a bastard because his parents marriage certificate was stolen by a jealous cousin who then was named heir upon his father's death. Years later, that cousin is dying and wants Griff to marry one of his daughters since he never had sons and is dangling the proof of his parents marriage and a chance to be the earl as bait. Griff decides he will not be trapped into marriage and comes up with a plan to get the certificate and become earl without marriage. He switches places with his man of affairs Daniel and tries to search the house for the certificate while Daniel is busy with the sisters. What Griff didn't count on was the middle Swanlea sister, Rosalind. Rosalind is a very strong woman who is running the estate for her father. The sisters are unaware of their father's treachery and believe the cousin is a legitimate heir. The older sister Helena is maimed by illness and doesn't believe she will ever marry. The youngest sister Juliet is determined to marry the cousin so that the girls may stay at Swanlea. However, Juliet is terrified of the huge cousin "Daniel". Rosalind is determined that the sisters will marry only for love and decides she will turn her cousin against marriage. Rosalind is suspicious of "Griff' her cousins' man of affairs and follows him around the estate making it hard for him to look for the certificate. Rosalind and Griff find themselves attracted to one another (they are both stubborn and share a love of Shakespeare)but neither one will back down. When Daniel realizes the attraction, he urges Griff to forget his plans of revenge and just marry Rosalind. Griff cannot let go of the hurt he has suffered for years and thinks the certificate will help him succeed in business. He wants to find a way to get his revenge and keep Rosalind.
This story was wonderful. The characters were great. The chemistry was sizzling. Never boring and sometimes funny, sometimes sensual. I recommend this book to anyone.
The heroine ruined it for me...........2006-09-19
Of the six books I have read by Sabrina Jeffries this is the only one I haven't liked. I have adored all the others. And I love, love, love her style.
Rosalind was the most annoying heroine I have ever come across. Between her and the "ultra bitter" older sister the book was ruined for me. I really like strong female characters, but this woman really got on my nerves.
Three stars because Ms. Jeffries is a truly talented writer.
1st book of Swanlea Spinster Series.......2006-05-08
A Dangerous Love by Sabrina Jeffries is the first of the Swanlea Spinster Series. Griff Knighton pretends to be his friend Daniel (his man of affairs) so he can search an Swanlea estate for proof that he is an real Earl. Rosalind balks at the plan to marry her off to Knighton. The story is sweet with some great twist and excellent love scenes. The order of the Swanlea Spinster is A Dangerous Love (#1) The Dangerous Lord (#2) and After the Abduction (#3), Dance of Seduction (#4) and Married to the Viscount (#5).
Three sisters, two men......and Shakespeare.......2005-07-17
This is the first book in a series by Sabrina Jeffries about the Swanlea Spinsters, three sisters that feel no need or desire to marry. This is the story of Rosalind Laverick the middle child of a dying man, who invites Griff Knighton to come and marry one of his daughters. She doesn't know that there is more to this story than her father lets on.
Griff finds this to be the perfect opportunity to find the proof that will help him prove that he is not the bastard that everyone thinks that he is. So, he swaps identities with his man of affairs so he can snoop about the estate without having to worry about three spinsters vying for his attention. When he arrives he never thought that these three beautiful women were spinsters, especially the one who holds him at swordpoint when she finds him snooping in her father's study.
With lots of sexual tension and plenty of Shakespeare quotes, this makes a great beginning to this series. I can't wait to read Daniel's story with Helena, I know that it will be twice as great as this one. Only a few things that I found tedious in this book. The use of the word Griffin to describe how much Griff is like a griffin got very repetitive. Plus the use of the word St.Peter to describe a man's....you know... was repetitious. But that's only minor details in a great story that is filled with love. The hero is to die for, everything that should be in a character is in this one. Rosalinde is sort of "too" strong at some times. But, I recommend this one for fans of regency romance, and any other Sabrina Jeffries book. Don't miss it.

Book Description
From New York Times bestselling author and "grand mistress of storytelling" (Romantic Times) Sabrina Jeffries comes the second seductive story in her School for Heiresses Series.
"You can't avoid him forever, Louisa. Just tell him you're not interested, and put an end to it."
-- Mrs. Charlotte Harris, headmistress
Marry? Never! It would end Louisa North's work with her ladies reform group -- and truth be told, she likes her independence very much, despite her royal father's protests. So when Simon Tremaine, the dashing Duke of Foxmoor whom she once loved -- and had exiled from England -- returns bent on marrying her, she's skeptical. Does he truly care for her, or does he simply want revenge? It's difficult to resist Simon's dangerous charms, because the fire between them still burns as hot as ever. But when his ulterior motive for marriage is exposed, along with the deeply buried secrets of his past, Louisa vows to make him pay . . . and the price will be his heart.
Customer Reviews:
Great Story, more serious than other "Heirssess Series" books.......2007-08-18
I have read all of the School for Heiresses Series to date, and I would have to say this is my least favorite of them all. Not to say I didn't like it, but I think the reason is that the characters lacked the witty banter of the other books. Louisa North, illegitimate daughter of the King, is head the London Ladies Society whose current goals involve prison reform for women as well as supporting Political candidates willing to support this reform. Her suitor, Simon, the Duke of Foxmore, has his own political agenda to be Prime Minister, which to gain the King's support involves the courting and "taming" of Louisa's political aspirations. All of these situations are quite serious as the treatment of women in prison during this time period was heart wrenching. Even Louisa's fear of marriage leading to child birth has its own horrific historical significance. While it was still an interesting story, it seemed an off-shoot of the otherwise fun and witty Heiresses series. I think it may help to read Sabrina Jefferies Royal Brotherhood series as these characters are tied into that. But I still recommend this book as the characters are very rich and full of depth, an excellent story and steamy romance.
Terrific As Always!.......2007-08-17
In the second book of Jeffries "School for Heiresses" the reader is re-introduced (TO PLEASURE A PRINCE part of Jeffries' "Royal Brotherhood" series) to Louisa North, illegitimate daughter of King George IV, as well as the man who'd broken her heart 7 years ago, Simon Tremaine, the new Duke of Foxmoor.
It's seven years later and Simon has returned from India where the king had banished him after Louisa discovered his affections towards her masked his aspirations for political gain. He's back and still politically ambitious but after his first sight of Louisa his passions are aroused even more so for the woman she's become. Summoned to an audience with the king, Simon is offered a deal he cannot refuse. If Simon can court and marry Louisa, who's been stirring up trouble as a member and founder of the London Ladies Society, the king would make it possible for Simon to achieve his greatest political desire - Prime Minister of England.
Louisa for all her new independence and charitable work for female prisoners; courting reformists to her cause; and secretly backing a candidate for the House of Commons; she was not totally immune to the attentions of the Duke of Foxmoor. Yes, Simon was a scoundrel for breaking her heart while using her for his ambitious political maneuvers, but his kiss still left her weak in the knees. While Simon knew it would only be a matter of time for him to bring her to the marriage bed, Louisa would be the one to finally bring him to his knees.
*** A long time fan of Sabrina Jeffries, I confess, I have not read a single book of hers I did not love! Bringing together a couple with bad history from an earlier story has been done before, but Jeffries brings them back with style incorporating sparkling dialogs and some very sensual trysts as they battle over both domestic and political issues.
Simon is a complex hero who isn't at all likeable when first introduced as he is shown bargaining with the king once again in an effort to reap political gain and rewards. If it weren't for having Raji, his pet monkey on his shoulder, I wouldn't have liked him at all. Little by little, he does become the hero when he starts to bend a bit while trying to worm his way into Louisa's good graces. As the author starts to weave in bits and pieces of Simon's tragic early youth of `training', beaten into him by his grandfather one starts see how he was molded into his attitude of political ambitions while making him stifle any and all feelings of passion. In some of his kind acts, used to break through Louisa's lack of trust, the reader begins to see bits and pieces of the man he could become if someone was brave enough to break through his defensive outer shell.
Having spent most of the last seven years in the royal court, Louisa had grown into an independent, accomplished woman after having her heart broken by Simon. She is intelligent and savvy, points very well defined by the author's excellent portrayal, and as such even though she knows Simon is not to be trusted, her heart is drawn as a moth to a flame. Willing to give him enough rope to hang himself, this more mature Louisa sees glimpses of the man she's always dreamed of and hopes he's become and gets caught in Simon's net, but was wise enough to demand concessions. Consequently she was devastated to discover once again his betrayal. Hurt beyond measure, Louisa would uncover truth's that motivated Simon, truth's that would set him free to live and love.
This truly was an engrossing story of redemption and sensual passion for Lousia and Simon - both wonderfully crafted and finally able to find the happiness they deserved. Not only does Jeffries titillate the reader with a passion filled romantic love story but she couples it with intricately woven human frailties making the characters leap off the pages into your hearts. I've said it before and I'll say it again Ms. Jeffries holds you from first page to the last with a perfect combination of wit, romance and intrigue.

The monkey stole the show!.......2007-06-13
The most interesting character in this novel, was the hero's pet monkey Rajii! That summarizes my view of this book. I'm glad I only borrowed it from the library.
Others have already summarized the plot so I will not rehash. I will say that the political backdrop was intriguing and very informative. The chemistry between the protagonists was lacking- of course when Simon could actually convince Louisa to let her guard down , it was steamy but their interactions as a couple lacked the spark I like in a romance.
I actually felt sorry for Simon for landing such a querolous wife.
I for one love the independanlt female, however I really think many heroines are not realistically rendered. I totally understand Louisa's devotion to her prison reform, and wanting a radical candidate and I understand Simon's balking at it- what I don't understand is why Louisa thinks this is abnormal from her husband, a DUKE with POLITICAL asperations.
There was also the scene where she got pelted by a rock (yes, a ROCK!) at the prison, however even though she got knocked out, she is adamant tonot have a doctor. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't mind independent heroines, I just dislike the borderline stupid ones.
didn't finish.......2007-06-07
I have read several of her other books and enjoyed them. I found myself having a few minutes to read, picking up the book, then doing something else. I wish that I had read the reviews before. Borrow the book if it appeals to you.
Needed something more.......2007-05-08
The hero and heroine of this book just never convinced me that they really loved each other. Since there was a lot of political machination going on between these two, they were always one upping the other when it came to advancing their own agendas. This was a tedious. I never understood how Simon, the hero, was so forgiving of Louisa. When she discovered that he was stringing her along in a courtship she had him sent to India for seven years. She was in no way compromised, they shared one kiss. This was glossed over and Simon said he deserved his banishment. This novel would have been more interesting if revenge had been part of the plot. Also, a deeper background into Simon's past in India would have fleshed out his charachter. He was one dimensional.
Louisa was stubborn but so was Simon. I really was tired of her reapeating to herself, "A pox on Simon, a pox on her husband."
Both were secretive but to the author's credit, they did not let misunderstandings go on throughout the entire novel. Once a secret was revealed, they discussed it and moved on. This book rates 2 ½ stars. The political backdrop with prison reform was fresh and inventive but the hero and heroine were not.

Customer Reviews:
First in the Lord trilogy - great hero and heroine with wonderful chemistry, a definite re-read.......2007-07-19
"The Pirate Lord" is the first book in Sabrina Jeffries' Lord Trilogy, but I actually read it last. Like the other two it was wonderful, some of SJ's best work (though most of her romances are hits!). I would definitely recommend it and I am glad that I bought the book as I know it will be a re-read.
Setting: London and Atlantis/North Atlantic Ocean, 1818
Sensuality rating: 7 or 8 (chemistry and progression between hero and heroine was extremely well done, very good and well-written erotic scenes)
PROS:
(1) Sara (the heroine) and Gideon (the hero) are both likable and I think they're a great pair and very well-matched
(2) There was none of that confusion / misunderstanding that drives you crazy; the characters were constant and it's so touching how much they love and need each other
(3) The development of their relationship is interesting and fun to read; they clash almost immediately and it's just a joy to watch
(4) Good development of secondary characters and secondary romances; the people are real, as are their stories
(5) I enjoyed the historical aspect that was added with the back story of convict women and their transportation
(6) The end (won't specify because don't want to spoil) was pretty foreseeable, but I still loved it and it was touching to see that issue resolved for Gideon
(7) As I was reading this book I was kind of already writing my review in my head, and when Sara just accepts that Petey will pretend to marry her and doesn't even give a thought to his own wishes or Ann's (though she doesn't realize at first that they care for each other, she finds out later) I was very annoyed and made a mental note to add that to the cons ... however, I was VERY happy to see that SJ has her heroine actually show character development, as Sara realizes that she's being selfish and that she had just accepted that Peter would do this for her, when really they are equals and who is she to expect that? So thank you SJ, that was very well done!
(8) Jordan, Sara's brother, is very sweet and protective of her and I really enjoyed their relationship; he really loves her but I was glad to see that he didn't think himself her master and commander and was pleasantly surprised to see that he finally agrees to let her go on the transport ship. His story ("The Forbidden Lord" is great so make sure to read that one also!)
CONS:
(1) The whole premise of the book is unrealistic - Atlantis and the utopia of retired pirates - but if you can suspend belief for a little (which is, of course, the whole reason we read these novels to begin with!) then you'll be fine; frankly, the story is so great and well-written it really doesn't become an issue
(2) The summary provided on the back of this edition has some mistakes, but that's not a big deal, just one of those annoying things you notice after you read the book
BOTTOM LINE:
I would definitely recommend "The Pirate Lord" to any lover of historical romances (Regency period) and/or Sabrina Jeffries. The whole Lord Trilogy series is wonderful so once you finish this novel you can look forward to the next two.
ARRRRR,shiver me timbers!!!.......2007-02-17
Tis a great story of pirate love and a willing woman who does everything to keep her man
The Pirate Lord.......2006-11-09
I enjoyed this story as so many others by Sabrina Jefferies. I wasnt disappointed when I read this one. It kept me riveted and unable to put the book down.
Mind Numbing.......2006-10-20
When reading this book I suggest you sit down with a glass of wine (or even a bottle) in preparation for all the cheese this tale has to offer. While the plot showed potential and the promise of some good banter and wit, it does nothing but disappoint.
The story begins with an infuriatingly prudish heroine that is kidnapped by the conveniently cleaver, dangerous, charming, all knowing, all powerful, all everything-you-can-think-of "Pirate Lord" Gideon Horn. Miss Sara Willis, prude, prig, and all out holier-than-thou English reformer is so annoying you can't help but wish she would either shut up or be walked off the plank. Captain Horn, or Captain Corn as I prefer to call him, just happens to know everything there is to know about everything that possibly comes up...he accurately guesses everything Sara plans, feels, tries and even thinks. Never a doubt, never a mistake, never a guess to be made for he knows all...and he's nauseatingly corny to boot.
Furthermore, the dialog is so atrocious you can't help but cringe after every other phrase uttered by the characters. While every five paragraphs might have a commendable sentence or two, most of it seems to have been written by a sixth grader. Despite the drudgery of making it through each paragraph, I continued to read hoping the book would at some point redeem itself, but all for not. Chapter 14 rendered me so desperately bored I had no choice but to escape the mind numbing assault on my brain. Not that romance novels are supposed to be master works of literature...but at least make it fun, interesting, or even just plain readable. I recommend looking else where for a good story. All in all, this book left MUCH to be desired.
Beautiful story!!!!.......2006-08-30
I am a huge fan of Ms. Jeffries. Haven't read all her books yet, but I am working on it.
So far she hasn't missed the mark once. At times this story tends to get a bit draggy, but it does pick right up.
I did enjoy "The forbidden Lord" which is the next book in the series a bit more.
Still a wonderful read!!!

Book Description
Inspired by New York Times bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries's School for Heiresses series, this delightful anthology features four young women who learn that there's nothing textbook about love. . . .
"It is better not to marry at all than to marry badly."
-- Mrs. Charlotte Harris, headmistress
At the School for Heiresses, the lessons go far beyond etiquette and needlepoint. In addition to teaching her students how to avoid fortune hunters, headmistress and founder Charlotte Harris proposes the radical notion that women of means need not shackle themselves to men at all -- unless they find a suitable, desirable mate. So lessons in the fine art of acquiring a loving and passionate husband are part of the curriculum at this highly unusual school. And as the holidays approach, Mrs. Harris sends her young ladies home with personally tailored lessons to work on. Will they return any closer to finding the perfect husband?
Join this dazzling roster of authors as they put their own spin on the School for Heiresses in four spirited tales of passion!

The School for Heiresses .......2007-08-13
Ten Reasons To Stay by Sabrina Jeffries
The new Earl of Monteith, Colin Hunt, wants nothing more than to find some long sought after peace and a bride who will give him that. What he finds is the cloaked figure of a tempting woman trying to steal one of his horses. Eliza Crenshawe is Colin's mystery woman, and the tale she spins is unbelievable. When he finds out that she might be telling the truth, instead of sending her back, he finds himself giving her ten reasons to stay.
Ten Reasons To Stay is a lusty love story. It's romantic and mysterious as well. I like Colin and Eliza very much.
After Midnight by Liz Carlyle
Martinique is leaving The School For Heiresses to live with her uncle, Baron Rothewell. The Baron will undoubtedly try to find Martinique a suitable husband and fast, but what she wants is love and passion.
Justin St. Vrain is going through the motions of life with little expectation and desire until a mistaken and passionate encounter with Martinique has him slowly rethinking his life's shallow goals.
The romance was a bit dimmed for me when the hero intended to bed one woman then beds another in her place. I do so enjoy watching said rogue fall hard though. After Midnight is full of mystery and passion. It's a good story with fun characters.
The Merchant's Gift by Julia London
Grace Holcomb's father insists she marry a wealthy and titled gentleman. He has done everything in his power to mold Grace into the proper young lady, but she still lacks suitors. Barrett Adlaine is a merchant and unfortunately for Grace, he's the only man she is attracted to. Barrett wants Grace, but in order to have her he'll have to convince her that true love is worth more than a title.
Grace disappointed me in The Merchant's Gift. I thought she was weak and that she hurt poor Barrett's feelings knowing full well how it feels to be cast out of society. I did love Barrett though, and the ending is very romantic.
Mischief's Holiday by Renee Bernard
Alyssa Martin has gotten herself in trouble again. She seems to find it even when she is determined to stay away from it. When Leland Yates saves her from a carriage mishap, then turns out to be a guest at her father's home, Alyssa is sure her troubles are just beginning again, but she may be in for a surprise when sedate, quiet Leland decides that he likes the kind of trouble Alyssa brings to his life.
Mischief's Holiday is a very tender and romantic story. Alyssa is sweet and endearing and Leland is very sexy. I wished this had been a longer story. I wanted more!
The School for Heiresses has a good group of stories in it. There is romance, passion, and drama in each one. There is a common theme in the stories but they each stand alone nicely

SCHOOL FOR HEIRESSES gets A+!.......2007-06-15
England 1800'S
The delightful four stories are wonderful and could have easily been made into four separate novels! Will definitely look for more from these authors!
Very Enjoyable!
2 out of 4 isn't too bad.......2007-05-15
The concept of this anthology is strange to me. You have one author that has a series and then these other authors trying to write stories about the same series? Good in theory perhaps but I'm not sure it was a success. Only one of the authors pulled it off (besides Jefferies of course). I didn't hate it; however I am glad I bought it at a discount store. Two of the stories were really good. Jefferies' and Bernard's - the other two were lacking.
1 - Sabrina Jefferies' Ten Reasons to Stay - this was great. I really like her writing style and besides it was a continuation of characters we've already read about. I love series so it worked for me.
2 - Liz Carlyle's After Midnight. I didn't dislike it so much as I felt like I was missing something important. Like an entire book. I think I was suppose to know who all of those characters were but because I have not read Liz Carlyle (maybe I should?) I didn't. I thought there was too much story trying to be told in a short story format - maybe this was a tie in to one of her series?
3 - Julia London's The Merchants Gift - I don't think I've read any of her books but this story didn't do anything for me. The man I liked, hard working, strong, honest, and sexy - everything likeable in a hero. The woman on the other hand was a spineless silly twit. It was one of those stories where you think, wow he deserves so much better than her. What a shame they ended up together.
4 - Renee Bernard's Mischief's Holiday was a delight and I loved it. She should have had second billing in this book rather than Liz Carlyle. Of course Jefferies gets first, it's her series, but to be honest I think this was my favorite. I love writers that can make me laugh and really feel for the characters in the book and this is one of those, even in a short story format. She did a really good job tying it into the School for Heiresses idea as well. Besides all of that Bernard is a great new writer. If you have not read A Lady's Pleasure by her you are missing out. It's different and a really good read. I'm looking forward to Madame's Deception coming out in August 2007.
I really enjoyed 2 out of 4 books .......2007-02-27
The School for Heiresses is four stories of women are finished with school and on their own for the first time.
Ten Reasons to Stay by Sabrina Jeffries was very enjoyable. Eliza is running away from her uncle who wants to marry her off and finds herself stealing/borrowing a horse from Colin the new Earl of Monteith. Colin lockes Eliza up in his closet until her finds out the real truth. Very Steamy - a great read....
After Midnight by Liz Carlyle was missing something - no my favorite. Justin crawls into the wrong bed and finds Martinique and not his lover. It has moments but I was glad it was a short story.
The Merchants Gift by Julia London was a very sweet story. I didn't like the Grace the main character she didn't have a back bone.
The final book Mischief Holiday by Renee Bernard was very good. Lots of stolen kisses, humor and great characters.
Fun, Flirty, Fast anthology .......2007-02-24
Each story ties into The School for Heiresses world created by Sabrina Jeffries. The heroines have their own personality, which compliments the mix of authors as they have their own style and voice. They tackle a different tried and true theme in romanceland, adding a twist to make it interesting. Two stories worked really well for me, one was okay and one didn't work at all.
Sabrina Jeffries, Ten Reasons to Stay, is a take on the `regency miss trying to escape the evil guardian's plans to make her marry someone not of her choice to pay off his debt'.
Colin is a very interesting character, who is of mixed race and suddenly finds himself the Earl of Monteith. [If you haven't read Only a Duke Will Do, you should and you get more of his backstory here as well] Eliza has a pretty good head on her shoulders. And is trying to do something vs waiting for someone to rescue her. [The Twist: Some naughty books and mixed heritage]
Sabrina Jeffries has a great way of taking historical fact and expanding on it. Her world may not always follow the letter of the law of history but they come across as believable. I always find myself closing her books with a smile on my face. Grade: B
After Midnight by Liz Carlyle does the `regency miss gets caught with a rake so they have to marry'.
Martinique is a beauty. She has a brain to match it and a mysterious past in the West Indies. Justin St. Vrain was a very, very naughty boy. Years ago he ran off to Paris with another man's wife. Now his father is dead and the title is his. [The Twist: Martinique is a courtesan's daughter. The woman Justin ran off with was his stepmother. And the story starts off a new series!]
I love this story and the fact that these people aren't your normal Regency fare. It might have to do with the fact it has made me way excited about the new series. I can't wait to spend more time with these characters. Grade A-
The Merchant's Gift by Julia London tries her hand at the `wealthy merchant daughter's duty is to marry a title'.
Grace, as would be expected, has a hard time trying to mix with the ton. Her duty is to marry a title and little else seems to matter. Barrett Adlaine is nothing more than a merchant and thus she believes not for her.
[The Twist: The hero is pretty betaish and does the chasing.]
I don't like the 'selling your daughter for a title' plot. And Mr. Holcomb gets way too much screen time, add in this is a novella and it way drops my enjoyment level. I could never see Grace as anything more than a gold digger, regardless of her but it is for my father and expected of me lines. Adlaine should have ran far and fast away from the chit. He was too good of a hero for Grace. Grade D.
Mischief's Holiday is Renee Bernard's tale of `Nice guy falls for clumsy regency miss evil cousin tries to steal him'. (At least I think that is what it was going for....)
Alyssa Martin (regency name?!?) wants to get married, fall in love and live happy ever after. And for once, she would like to stay out of trouble while doing it. [The Twist: The story is more of a `traditional' regency.]
Cute story with a sweet heroine but too slapsticky for my taste. And the tone was completely different from the other three in style. It may have worked better for me if this was the second in the anthology then to end with it. Regardless the story didn't seem to end as much as stop. Grade C-
If you are looking for a meaty historical, keep looking, but if you are looking to lose yourself with some fun characters for a bit, this is just the ticket. Readers of the series will enjoy it and new readers should be able to follow along just fine.

Once you start to read you become as one with the characters.
Ms.Jefferies keeps the story moving and always a surprise around each corner.
This was a great read!.......2006-04-27
Sabrina Jeffries is one of my favorites and this book was fun. I liked Emily (but Emma even more!) and Jordan was a good hero. I'm a sucker for a dark hero, so his auburn hair was a bit off-putting - no biggie though.
The story was good and much more plausible than some other far-fetched storylines I've read. Some cheesiness, but not overly much. Just an all-around fun read.
Definitely not a 5 star, but still recommended.
Typical boring fare.......2006-03-22
There is too much bickering between the protagonists. It got to be very annoying and tedious. The story line is typical regency stuff. Innocent girl who has to go and masquerade as someone else to help out a friend. Alpha male is totally enamoured with her, despite her refusing to tell him what is going on. Bickering and lust ensues.
