Useful.......2007-08-12
There are some other books out there on the same subject. Some, like "Toxic Coworkers," may do the job even better. But this is still a useful volume. As the Introduction notes (page 1): "This is a book about impossible people and how to cope with them." Coping is the center of this work--how to deal with workers who are difficult to work with. The idea? (Page 7): "Coping enables you and the Difficult Person to get on with the business at hand." "Win-win" is the goal. Is the advice useful? Each reader will have to decide for him/herself?
The book describes a variety of difficult types: hostile-aggressive, the complainer, unresponsive ones, wonderfully nice people who don't perform, the negativist, know-it-alls, and indecisive stallers. For each, the author describes the malady and then suggests how one might work with them to get the best out of them. The book closes, also, with ideas as to how one can manage one's own "defensive behavior" around such problem workers. The author concludes (page 214): ". . .many people just like you have found that coping effectively with difficult people is possible."
Final question: How well does the book succeed? Not bad, but the solutions will not convince all readers.
Dealing With Difficult People.......2007-05-09
Read about the different types of people in the world today, and find out ways to deal with difficult personalities.
Good coping strategies .......2007-04-13
I thought the parts of this book that described some of the different, difficult personalities was very good. I actually really thought it had something to offer and the strategies were practical. The insights though didn't stick and I think that you have to read this regularly to keep reminding yourself that all these people exist in the world (including you) and you are going to see them every day. Thats kind of a depressing thought actually. With all the other books I need to keep reading to remind myself about various insights I want to stay home.
I liked the concept of this book.......2007-02-05
The concept of this book is good. You can't change other people, and you can't always avoid them. The most realistic option is to have some coping strategies. I think the author outlined them well. I gave the book three stars, though, because the reading got to be tedious and boring. I've read similar books that are more enjoyable, either because you can identify the different personality type with humor, or because they explained the personalities more realistically with better situational examples. This book seemed a little dry.
Helpful advice .......2007-01-19
Bramson wisely uses the word 'coping'. That is he is not suggesting that one can really overcome or transform difficult people. He is speaking primarily about difficult people in the working place. The domineering aggressive abusive type should according to Bramson not be reacted to with anger and rage. One should also refused to be intimidated, and instead asset one's own views. The sniper who by little satirical remarks, and efforts at humor tries to hurt and diminish should be confronted and questioned as to his true intentions. The complainer should be opposed with positive ideas on the same project that the complainer is negative about. The know-it-alls, the silent- negative types, the indecisive also can in some way countered and dealt with.
Above all the aim must be to prevent these negative types from dominating one's own mindscape and action.
All of us confront in one way or another difficult people. And each of us is perhaps in a certain way a difficult person himself. This book is addressing a subject we all in some way know, and have connection with.
One other point. I have known and loved in my life very very difficult people perhaps beyond in a way described in this book. The fact is it is often what is difficult in them which somehow more strongly binds them to us.
This is a complicated subject about which there are worlds to be said.

short quick and to the point.......2007-05-28
Dirty little secrets by Claude Anderson
Glossed over and misrepresented, virtually the most misunderstood of all subjects ....the history of the black race...a compilation of bits of facts, coincidences, contradictions, sexual exploits and tantalizing stories corrected and brought forth. Be introduced to heroes, warriors, and statesmen (Don Pio Pico, John Horse, David Walker, Khufu, Sabastian and Lari Giles). Others who fought for the people (Thad Stevens, Gen Santa Ana, John Brown, J.C. Harris), and some who were the ward connally and david duke of the day (Davy Crockett, William Penn, Haywood Shepard, John Chaves). Be introduced to arab slave trading to the tune of one million people over a 100 years confused under smothered religious conflicts, the folsom people, the berlin conference of 1876, slave Russians captured by the Germans, the buying and selling of slaves that occupied major places in newspapers....and tons of similar information, well worth the purchase.
Excellent Experieince.......2007-05-17
I received my books in a timely manner and in great shape. Thank you.

Dr. Anderson (and his son) have done it again! Excellent follow-up to volume one. Recommended reading not just for African Americans but for all who have a sincere desire to know more about American history.
My kids needed something........2006-11-06
It was amaizing to watch my two teen girls get some of the history of America filled in. They now have a better understandign of the why's and hows of history in the Americas.
My girls are now ready to not allow anyone tell them that they are inferior just because they are Black. They know if they fail it is because they are not working hard enough and/or not in the right place at the right time. They know that they can because despite the Americas prejudice, there were blacks that were so successful that they had to be removed from history by jealous writers of American history.
Thanks for the new pride.
A MUST HAVE.......2003-03-26

"Wild and eclectic members of three Chinese families clash and connect in a series of intertwined stories of family, sex, disillusionment, and love. ""Fresh, daring, Troublemaker and Other Saints introduces an exciting new voice that eagerly explores the neither-here-nor-thereness of young Chinese-Americans as they bridge the gap between two complex and troubling social orders with humor, pathos, and heart. How often have you heard the phrase 'a writer to watch'? Christina Chiu is a writer to read."" --Helen Schulman In Troublemaker and Other Saints, the life of one character weaves into that of another, and then another, as unlikely figures are brought face to face, strengthening and illuminating one another in surprising ways. But who are the troublemakers? Who are the saints? In ""Troublemaker,"" a young tough finds his humanity when he is forced to care for an old man he has assaulted with a beer can. In ""Doctor,"" a family's golden child marries a black man and is shunned by everyone--except her schizophrenic uncle. In ""Mama,"" traditional parents come to the rescue of their bisexual daughter, who has broken up with her lover. In ""Gentleman,"" a wealthy alcoholic Hong Kong businessman facing financial ruin fails to connect with those around him, including a nymphomaniac niece and a mother who speaks to the dead. And in the closing story, a thief stumbles across his past while committing what he intends to be his final robbery. East and West, old and young collide in a struggle to advance and to belong. Christina Chiu's stunning debut illustrates, with humor and pain, that just as there is a bit of troublemaker in each of us, there is something beautiful and, ultimately, redemptive."
Customer Reviews:
okay read--but not great.......2007-04-19
I am currently reading Christina Chiu's short
fiction collection Troublemakers and Other
Saints. I thought based on the title and that
the author has an MFA from Columbia University
that the book was going to be fantastic but it wasn't.
Every stereotype of Asians is featured in the
collection--there is no depth to the characters
quite like Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. There
are also plenty of stereotypes about blacks,
older people, etc. but the author never states
why we should care or we should not. The Asian
characters seem cold, and unfriendly, looking
down on anyone who is not successful, middle-class,
Asian, etc.
The first story in the collection is the best, but
the stories tend to layered down in multiple
characters, making it hard for the reader to
understand who the stories are really about.
I liked the first story because I actually thought
the characters showed real conflict
that ALL readers could relate to but after that,
the story became muddled down in cliche comments
and even statements that didn't make sense. For
example on page 81, "'Good looking,' I say, even
though he's freckle-faced, and even for a na gua
ning, he's only mama who who, only so so." Huh?
The author does show promise though and I also
enjoyed reading Troublemaker but for me, I'm glad I
checked out this book from the library!
Good enough to read again.......2005-09-26
I like the conceit here: Write a series of short stories hung thinly together by relationships among the characters, relationships both known and unknown. Did the author find herself so overwhelmed by the voluminous storytelling possibilites--just like her character Aggie, who deletes almost 2,000 pages of draft, character by character on her computer--that she cut back to essential moments? Were these chapters/short stories amplifications of the character studies drawn before the novel was begun? Was there just too much to tell? I am reminded less of Joy Luck Club than of Greek tragedies, separate pieces plucked from intertwining stories. One of Chiu's characters is so oedipal, I may reread this, looking for Greek roots rather than Chinese.
a pleasure to read.......2002-11-09
This book encompassed everything, no stereotypes were allowed to seep in and I loved that. A gamut of personalities were explored here and there were things about racial identity, about being Asian, sprinkled in here and there but that served only to add to these characters and in the exploration of their lives. The writing style was great, the author jumped from person to person but never let the reader lose sight of the larger picture and how each character's life flowed into anothers.
Wonderfully complex characters.......2002-08-13
Though this is a collection of short stories, the author manages to create some complex characters within the tales of life among a group of Asian Americans. Far from the mawkish fare derided by some other reviewers, I found Chiu's prose to be efficient and interesting. Sure, she does use a fair amount of patois in the dialogue of some of the older characters who struggle with the English language, but it isn't obnoxious. The author skillfully introduces characters as a minor part of one story and then builds on that character in a succeeding chapter. Ms. Chiu provides a window on the experiences of a group of people that may not be representative of the entire Asian American experience, which was probably not her goal anyways, but it does shed light on some of the problems universal to those outside of the mainstream. Identity crises, ghettoization, self-hate, violence are all laid bare for the reader to experience through the eyes of these characters. However I wasn't searching for any deeper meaning in this work; I accepted for what it was -- good fiction.
There were some unanswered questions that left holes in some of the stories. Just how did the golden child Georgianna wind up married to a Black man? Was she just being rebellious or did she love him? With the gay characters (there are two), how did they come out to their families? And as for the girl who isn't into Asian men -- what happened to make her that way? Surely she wasn't born with an aversion to her own kind. I realize that the constraints of the short story form prevent any in-depth treatment of those questions, but just a few sentences of background could have cleared those things up. Then again, maybe those were deliberate omissions to lend a bit of mystery to the characters. Still, I thought this was a very good read.
Amazing Book.......2001-12-14
I am very impressed with the way the author presented many different points of view in a realistic and unforced manner. I'm not quite sure why there are so many comparisons to Joy Luck Club- this book has nothing in common with Joy Luck Club except its main characters happen to be Asian. For the reviewer who thought this book did not represent "true" Chinese- American life, my question to you is- what IS a "true" Chinese-American experience? There is no such thing. Sex, drugs, violence- all of these are present in the patchwork of society and if you think that Chinese-Americans are exempt from such, I strongly suggest you open your eyes (or move out of suburbia). The characters in this book are provocative, and multi-dimensional. A very interesting read indeed.
Book Description
Thousands of small groups with few resources spend large amounts of time trying to influence decision-makers. For the most part, these groups are made up of ordinary citizens driven by a desire to make a difference beyond their own lives. Governments and corporations call these people "troublemakers." Those who study complex problems ranging from health care to global warming say we need far more troublemakers, far more active citizens.
Unlike similar books that are aimed at non-profits with paid staff, The Troublemaker's Teaparty is specifically designed to help small, volunteer citizen groups. An invaluable resource, it answers the basic questions of citizen action: How to get others involved? How to respect different views, but work cooperatively? How to make progress when decision-makers refuse to listen? How to find the time and resources?
The Troublemaker's Teaparty starts where most people start -- on small actions focused on local improvement -- then shifts to larger actions that transcend place. It includes:
- How to create healthy group relationships.
- How to build local community.
- How to avoid the pitfalls that drive people back into private life.
- How to put the screws on government.
- How to use the media to get results.
- How to think strategically.
It also includes:
- Project design, planning and evaluation.
- Negotiating, campaign, and confrontational tactics.
- A summary of what works in social movements.
- New possibilities for direct action and web action.
Clear, concise, accessible, and down-to-earth, this will become the definitive citizen guide.

I am somewhat new to activism. This book helped me think through a lot of the muddle in my head about how to structure my efforts. It reads well and is quite entertaining. I was inspired to action.
Book Description
This is a book about women who are changing the world as leaders in the public arena. Whether Christian, Jewish or Muslim--their work is religiously or spiritually motivated. They are religious or socio-ethical entrepreneurs, who have invented organizations or movements to repair the world. What shaped and formed them? How do they integrate a progressive social agenda with their faith? How do they exercise public leadership in a world where women's public roles are sometimes still suspect? The book is thematically organized and touches on many of the most relevant topics being discussed today: separation of church and state, the intersection of politics and religion, the silence of the progressive left and the embodiment of authentic religious pluralism. This book claims space for progressive forms of religion in an area dominated by the Religious Right.
God's Troublemakers is based on extensive interviews with 11 women social entrepreneurs. The 3 best known are Sr. Helen Prejean, the anti-death-penalty activist; Ruth Messenger, former Manhattan Borough President and now executive director of American Jewish World Service; and Helen LaKelly Hunt, who has been a national activist funding women's causes and a leader in persuading secular feminists to make common cause with religious women.

To be read ... slowly.......2006-12-28
This is not a book I COULDN'T put down. In fact, it's a book that cries out to BE put down. It's NOT a page-turner; it's a thought-provoker. Katharine Henderson inspires a person to read, stop, think, consider, contemplate, and then start reading again. She writes about "women of faith" - and by that she means ALL faiths (not just Christian, but Jewish and Muslim as well - who have chosen lives of action, who have decided to find ways, however small, of "changing the world": of helping the poor, of defending the prisoner, of advocating for the powerless, of challenging wars, of educating the youth. I kept reflecting on how these women became moved to such actions, on how they have managed to make things happen, and on how they have found it possible to continue with their work. These women are visionaries, certainly, but they're also very practical. They don't just sit back and imagine how things could be; they go out and make things different. They attend meetings, work on committees, write letters, raise money, demonstrate, argue, speak, march, and struggle. Read it slowly. Take your time. Let these women's marvelous stories move you
One of the best books I've ever read.......2006-12-14
This book is full of the wisdom gained from people who live in the grit of life while making their contribution to Humanity. Henderson writes with depth, wisdom, and clarity. This book should be read by women who want to have a deep insight into how they can fully be powerful in the world. This book should be read by people who want to enter into the world of making an effective difference.
I keep telling my wife how much I love this book and she tells me I've never spoken about a book in this way before. I've underlined so many pages that I can't lend it anyone so I've bought 6 as holiday gifts.
This is a book for moral, social entrepreneurs.

Book Description
Kinky Friedman is back, and with 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out he gets it on with all manner of egos. In this collection of twisted takes on life, the Kinkster gives us funny, irreverent, and insightful looks at outsized personalities from people he's known, like Bill Clinton, George W., Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan -- not to mention Joseph Heller and Don Imus -- to people he's known in spirit, such as Moses, Jesus, Jack Ruby, and Hank Williams. With his meditations on subjects ranging from sleeping at the White House, marriage, his pets, fishing in Borneo, country music, and cigars to the tribulations of possessing talent, Kinky doesn't deny us the "flashes of brilliance and laugh-out-loud observations" (Rocky Mountain News) that are present in all his other work.
Hilarious, irreverent, and passionately twisted, 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out reads as if it were written by a slightly ill modern-day Mark Twain.
Customer Reviews:
"Kinkstah" in usual form in a compendium of anecdotes........2006-03-09
No narrative, quirky or not. Just "And then I wrote..." anecdotes from real life (if you can call his life "real") presented in Kinky's usual irreverent, bawdy, often hysterically funny lack of style. An unguided missile that will tickle the grossest parts of your sense of humor, Good fun.
Whoa!.......2006-03-06
I wouldn't offer to share this with my reading buddies or even mention I own it, but the book certainly provides a unique portrayal of the life of Kinky. I laughed out loud at some of it, felt manipulated and propagandized at some of it, found myself bored at times, but I never wanted to put it down. This short book elicited a wide array of reactions on my part, but delving into the mind of a man as unpredictable as this author can't help but be well...unpredictable.
"Style is everything in this world.".......2005-10-30
Another one by Kinky, they keep getting better all the time. Most of Kinky's previous books were mystery novels ,and they were in a class all by themselves, loaded with great characters and unmatchable conservation with one-liners that could blow you away.Although I was never particularly fond of mysteries,I found Kinky's style of writing so much fun ,he kept me hooked right to the end.He is able to prove the old adage "Getting there is half the fun".That is how I found his yarns. It is all the experiences, along the way, rather than the solution, that is great.
However,'nuff said. This book departs from the mysteries and is a book full of Kinky's thoughts, comments, opinions, descriptions, explanations on just about everything that one has to deal with ,just getting through life, one day,or nite,at a time. The one thing you can learn from Kinky is that the world is full of people, things ans systems that try to control you and take the fun out of life and it is up to nobody but yourself not to let it happen.Just remember, you never gave them control over your life, and if you bow to them,it's your problem.
This book is full of great thoughts and one-liners.Just for a taste, let me quote a few of my favorites:
"The last time everything was all right was Aug 14,1945.That was the day Japan surrendered."
"Smoking cigars is a secular way of religion.A way of life for men (and women) who are not afraid to die."
"Did guys like Yeats and Shelley, who,by the way all belonged in a mental hospital, ever get to the point?"
"Money can buy a fine dog,but only love can make it wag its tail."
"Like Napoleon,Hitler and Alexander did not get to have much fun in life."
"His outrageous brand of humor tends to sail close to the truth."
"Ruby had done what every god-fearing red-blooded American would do and he was one of our boys."
"I've known two and a half Governors and they didn't seem to be working too hard."
"Rednecks were coming out of the mobile homes, women were coming out of the kitchen and the homosexuals and Jews were coming out of the closets."
"I got so high I started to get lonley."
"A Gypsy's definition of a millionaire is not a man who has a million dollars, but a man who has spent a million dollars."
The Kinkster Delivers.......2005-09-14
After seeing Kinky Friedman on Larry King Live, I decided to read one of his books. 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out' seemed like a good place to start. The book is a quick and easy read full of annedotes and lots of stories that only those bold enough can put into print. I enjoyed his very dry humor and wit. The chapter on Joseph Heller was particularly noteworthy since very few have been able to pin down this literary legend. If you looking for something different and are open enough to read another point of view, then I strongly recommend this book. The creativity that Kinky Friedman provides is worth the price of the book. A strong 4 stars. Now I am about to that on his latest book.
Fascinating glipses of a truly original American character.......2004-10-16
More than twenty years ago, a college professor friend introduced me to a talented country western musician with the remarkable name of Kinky Friedman. His band wore the unlikely moniker Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys. Thus began a journey through the diverse worlds of music, literature, politics, and down to earth, gut-busting humor. Friedman was not content to rest on his ability as a singer-songwriter. He has authored numerous mystery novels and now writes a monthly political column for Texas Monthly. He is truly a multi-talented man of great humor and ability, hilarious and irreverent as any of America's greatest talents.
'SCUSE ME WHILE I WHIP THIS OUT is a collection of some of Friedman's previous published pieces, as well as some never before released material. His writing covers subjects from country music to politics to life in general. Like a great Texas barbeque, there is a little something on the plate for everyone to enjoy.
In this era of fierce political partisanship, perhaps the most redeeming endorsement one can make for the man affectionately known as the "Kinkster" is the fact that he has been an invited guest at the White House of both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Friedman writes of his first visit to Washington in "Hail to the Kinkster." After personally autographing a book for President Clinton and receiving a note that read, "I have now read all of your books --- more please --- I really need the laughs," the President and Kinky began a three-year pen-pal relationship. Finally, in 1997, Friedman was invited to a White House dinner. Sitting next to the President, Friedman offered him a Cuban cigar, telling him, "Mr. President, don't think of it as supporting their economy, think of it as burning their fields."
In 2001, fellow Texan George W. Bush invited Friedman for a return visit to the White House. The dinner is described in "The Houseguest." While Bush and Clinton share little common ground politically, apparently they do share a love of cigars. Friedman describes smoking a cigar with President Bush on the Truman Balcony. They discussed baseball and the President's visit to the World Series to throw out the first pitch, and while nervous, President Bush explained that he simply followed the advice of Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter: "Whatever you do, don't bounce the ball on the way to the plate. They don't care who you are --- they'll boo you."
There are other wonderful pieces in this collection. Friedman describes his admiration for and meeting with Joseph Heller. We learn of his musical experiences with the Texas Jewboys. Each chapter provides the reader with fascinating glimpses of a truly original American character and, in addition, loads of laughs. The only criticism of this collection of essays is that there are not enough of them. Introduce yourself to Kinky Friedman through this book and then check out his other books. He is a true piece of Americana and a great writer to boot.

The book my kids wanted read to them every night!.......2001-01-05
I used to read this book to my children over and over and over. I asked my 20 year old son tonight if he remembers it, he said no. But I think once I find a copy to buy and he looks through it he will remember it. The kids in the book do a lot of everyday things that my kids could always enjoy and identify with. We enjoyed reading the book every night, and none of us tired of it. Lotta was a piece of work! It is very well-written and fun to read to the kids, and never bores the adult who is reading. I will enjoy reading it to my grandchildren, that is why I am searching for a copy to buy now.
Lotta's first book!.......2000-09-28
This is the first book about the five years old girl named Lotta. She lives at Troublemakerstreet together with her family which concists of her parents and her older brother and sister. You will follow her on her first adventures and see how this clever and very goal-oriented girl takes her world by storm.
Except for a great storytelling, tremendously described enviroments, spellbinding story, it's a jolly good book. I recommend you to get it.
Great Book...Not Only For Kids!.......1999-08-09
Astrid Lindren is not just "Pippi" author! She has many more wonderful children's books and this sure is one of them! It is such a shame that it is out of print... I may be a kid from yesterday but kids today will really love this book too as I did 20 years ago.
