Gregory Maguire's chilling, wonderful retelling of Cinderella is a study in contrasts. Love and hate, beauty and ugliness, cruelty and charity--each idea is stripped of its ethical trappings, smashed up against its opposite number, and laid bare for our examination. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister begins in 17th-century Holland, where the two Fisher sisters and their mother have fled to escape a hostile England. Maguire's characters are at once more human and more fanciful than their fairy-tale originals. Plain but smart Iris and her sister, Ruth, a hulking simpleton, are dazed and terrified as their mother, Margarethe, urges them into the strange Dutch streets. Within days, purposeful Margarethe has secured the family a place in the home of an aspiring painter, where for a short time, they find happiness.

But this is Cinderella, after all, and tragedy is inevitable. When a wealthy tulip speculator commissions the painter to capture his blindingly lovely daughter, Clara, on canvas, Margarethe jumps at the chance to better their lot. "Give me room to cast my eel spear, and let follow what may," she crows, and the Fisher family abandons the artist for the upper-crust Van den Meers.

When Van den Meer's wife dies during childbirth, the stage is set for Margarethe to take over the household and for Clara to adopt the role of "Cinderling" in order to survive. What follows is a changeling adventure, and of course a ball, a handsome prince, a lost slipper, and what might even be a fairy godmother. In a single magic night, the exquisite and the ugly swirl around in a heated mix:

Everything about this moment hovers, trembles, all their sweet, unreasonable hopes on view before anything has had the chance to go wrong. A stepsister spins on black and white tiles, in glass slippers and a gold gown, and two stepsisters watch with unrelieved admiration. The light pours in, strengthening in its golden hue as the sun sinks and the evening approaches. Clara is as otherworldly as the Donkeywoman, the Girl-Boy. Extreme beauty is an affliction...
But beyond these familiar elements, Maguire's second novel becomes something else altogether--a morality play, a psychological study, a feminist manifesto, or perhaps a plain explanation of what it is to be human. Villains turn out to be heroes, and heroes disappoint. The story's narrator wryly observes, "In the lives of children, pumpkins can turn into coaches, mice and rats into human beings. When we grow up, we learn that it's far more common for human beings to turn into rats." --Therese Littleton

Book Description

Is this new land a place where magics really happen?

From Gregory Maguire, the acclaimed author of Wicked, comes his much–anticipated second novel, a brilliant and provocative retelling of the timeless Cinderella tale.

In the lives of children, pumpkins can turn into coaches, mice and rats into human beings.... When we grow up, we learn that it's far more common for human beings to turn into rats....

We all have heard the story of Cinderella, the beautiful child cast out to slave among the ashes. But what of her stepsisters, the homely pair exiled into ignominy by the fame of their lovely sibling? What fate befell those untouched by beauty . . . and what curses accompanied Cinderella's exquisite looks?

Extreme beauty is an affliction

Set against the rich backdrop of seventeenth–century Holland, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister tells the story of Iris, an unlikely heroine who finds herself swept from the lowly streets of Haarlem to a strange world of wealth, artifice, and ambition. Iris's path quickly becomes intertwined with that of Clara, the mysterious and unnaturally beautiful girl destined to become her sister.

Clara was the prettiest child, but was her life the prettiest tale?

While Clara retreats to the cinders of the family hearth, burning all memories of her past, Iris seeks out the shadowy secrets of her new household––and the treacherous truth of her former life.

God and Satan snarling at each other like dogs.... Imps and fairy godmotbers trying to undo each other's work. How we try to pin the world between opposite extremes!

Far more than a mere fairy–tale, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is a novel of beauty and betrayal, illusion and understanding, reminding us that deception can be unearthed––and love unveiled––in the most unexpected of places.

3 out of 5 stars Imaginative but Long.......2007-08-17

Maguire does a nice job of painting the sisters as woeful humans and Cinderella as this spoiled little girl, but the book runs too long. It was imaginative of him to design such a twist to the original piece, though. Props for creativity.

3 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-08-15

I guess this book was just not my style. I liked the fact that the ugly stepsisters were made to seem kind, and human, which we all know was not the original story line. But this book was very slow moving, and in the end not all that satisfying. I did read the whole book, as some parts held my interest. Other parts of the book I found myself daydreaming.

2 out of 5 stars Blah Blah Boring.......2007-07-15

Ugly Stepsister was the reading choice of my book club and it was roundly disliked. The choice was based on the much better received Wicked, which I have not read.

The book was extremely slow to start. Although the characters were interesting, the writing itself was flat and uninspiring. It took me four weeks just to get through the first 100+ pages. By the date of the book club, seven weeks after I started the book, I still hadn't finished. In fact, the only reason I finished it was that I'd promised my fellow club members I would.

Our next book club read is Middle Sex (or Middlesex), which I hope is a better read. I can't imagine it will be much less entertaining. Thank goodness Harry Potter is being delivered next week so I can get the memory of Ugly Stepsister out of my head!

3 out of 5 stars Fresh take on a classic tale.......2007-07-10

This was a different take on the cinderella story. It was a little too gloomy and different from the original for me. Still it was an intriguing work.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2007-06-26

When I read Wicked, I changed my mind about the classic good guy bad buy image in books/movies. This was no different. It was delightful to discover the 'evil step sisters' were not that bad at all... that Cinderella was not as she appears in the classic Disney movie is refreshing. I enjoyed this book from page one.

Book Description

The Washington Post praised Mako Yoshikawa’s extraordinary first novel, One Hundred and One Ways, as “strikingly assured.” The Orlando Sentinel called it “an impressive accomplishment.” In Once Removed, Yoshikawa continues in the tradition of Alice Walker and Amy Tan with a powerful story of two women from different cultures who form a deep friendship that, though severely tested, can never be broken.

It has been many long years since Claudia last saw her Japanese-American stepsister. Once upon a time, Claudia’s Jewish father fell in love with Rei’s Japanese mother and abandoned his family to be with her. Though Claudia resented this new family her father so readily embraced, from the moment she and Rei met, the two girls formed a bond not even their parents understood. Their long-standing joke is that they are mirror reflections of each other--though in truth they are striking opposites. Claudia is blond and large-boned; Rei is dark-haired and thin, with distinct Asian features.

Now in their early thirties, Claudia and Rei have found a way back into each other’s troubled life. As impulsively affectionate as ever, Rei has come to Boston to recuperate from a potentially life-threatening illness, while the typically cautious Claudia has found herself replicating the behavior of her step-mother by falling in love with a married man. As they come together, the two women realize they must strike a balance between the friendship they long to recover and the secrets they have learned to keep. And they discover that despite the distance that has grown between them, their bond is as strong as ever--and could help them repair the other wounded relationships in their lives.

Lyrical, evocative, and richly imagined, Once Removed is an exceptional tale of two families, two cultures, and the connection between two women that survives the betrayals of those around them. Taking us from the exotic Japan of the 1940s and ’50s, to the verdant English countryside, to the urban streets of Boston, Mako Yoshikawa is a gifted storyteller who has firmly established her place in contemporary fiction.

5 out of 5 stars I am now a bigger fan!.......2004-07-29

I am a big fan of Mako's first book. Her second installment is as equally powerful and moving. Just like One Hundred and One Ways, the characters in this book are strong and the plot line is intruiging--I could not put the book down once I started reading it. One of the best things about Once Removed is the main Asian male character. You don't find a lot of romantic, leading men who are Asian in mainstream American media--right on Mako!!!

He and his two kids, Jesse and Rich are moving in with Emily and her family. They soon move in and not even two days later, weird things begin to happen to Emily. Changes... So far her and Jesse have not gotten along so far at all. Jesse for no reason is doing all these evil things to Emily!! Emily just knows it's her! Jesse puts peroxide in her shampoo to change her hair color, she tries to steal her boyfriend, and thats not all! Death taking things happen! If you want to find out what happens, then you should read this book. If you like twisted, evil, back-stabbing books... Well then what are you waiting for! Read this book! I did.

4 out of 5 stars Natasha's Review.......2005-11-17

I liked the book because it had a surprise ending. It was kind of boring at the beginning but once something bad happened it started to get interesting.
The book Stepsister was about a high school girl named Emily, her sister Nancy, and her stepsister named Jessie. One day when Jessie was taking a nice calm bath, Emily starts to read Jessie's diary. The entry she read was something that she thought that Jessie did was true. The whole time Jessie was living with them some bad things happened, for example, when Emily got home from a dance she found her dog dead. Then the next day she finds her dogs dead body in her backpack. But at the end something happens that you wouldn't expect.
I think this book will be good for anyone older than 10 because little kids they would probably think it was scary. Another reason is that there are words that little kids wouldn't understand.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-10-23

it wasn't really scary but it was interesting n exciting.its definately worth reading.

Emily's new stepsister(Jessie) takes over Emily's room, steals her clothes, also lies to everyone.Emily tries to get along with her,but she doesn't trust Jessie.Emily is terrified of her.She learns a horrible secret from Jessies diary.Has Jessie acually killed?emily must expose Jessie before its too late.

5 out of 5 stars This IS the best book R.L. Stine EVER wrote!!!.......2005-07-21

I have read this book so many times I know it by heart! LOL
This book is about a girl named Emily who's father died, so her mother decides re-marry. Emily, her mother and her sister Nancy live in the same house. Her stepfather, her step sister Jessie and her step brother moves in, Emily has to share her room with Jessie, at first Jessie is kind of mean to Emily, when Jessie gets to Emily's room she takes Emily's Teddy Bear and rips the head off of it after that bad things start happening to Emily. Someone puts peroxide in Emily's shampoo and her hair gets dyed green, someone stabs Emily's dog with a knife and leaves him in the middle of the kitchen floor, someone erases Emily's whole book report that she worked on for weeks, someone sets the school bathroom on fire and locks Emily inside, Emily is scared that it might be Jessie who is trying to kill her when she finds Jessie's diary one night and reads that Jessie might have commited a murder....this book has a surprise twist and a sad ending to it. This is the best Fear Street book R.L. Stine has written.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Nason's Review New Hampshire.......2006-12-12

This is an awesome Fear Street book. With such gruesome details feels like your watching a movie.

This is the sequel to The Stepsister. A chilling story of a girl named Emily who keeps having near death experiences. She knows it's Jessie her new stepsister. But when she finds her beloved sister trying to kill her, things take a turn for the worst. Finally, when her parents also witness an attack brought on by Nancy, she is sentenced to a year in the mental hospital. But know Nancy's back and she's madder than ever.

This is a YA book with a topic kind of hard to follow mainly because of the random switching from character to character. Also there is many twists in the book that completely change the whole book around. This book is mainly at the Seventh and Eighth grade level of reading.

5 out of 5 stars She's back and she is cured........2005-01-28

Nancy is back from the mental hospital and she is cured. Everyone can't wait to see her again from the mental hospital. Jessie is still the stepsister and she is much better now. Emily is nervous about seeing her coming home and very scared.

When Nancy came home she was so happy to see Emily and Jessie. Then things start to happen again and Emily thinks it was her. But then everything with the girls are doing all right now. Jessie is part of the family now and she is the new stepsisrer. Everything with Emily, Jessie, and Nancy are like sisters now.

4 out of 5 stars An Ok Book.......1999-06-30

I think The Stepsister 2 was an ok book. It's a little suspensful towards the end. You already know who the killer is in the begging if you read The Stepsister. It's pretty obvious. But I think Jessie's friend should have told her the truth about Jolie.

5 out of 5 stars i don't want a stepsister.......2006-11-14

I'm SOOO glad i don't have a stepsister. Mary Anne and Dawn are sure that being stepsisters will be totally fun. But they don't know that they'll be fighting constantly. I won't give away what the book is about but it is really good.

5 out of 5 stars mary-anne, i don't like her.......2005-09-01

wow, i know that moving is hard on anyone seriously, bu in this book mary-anne just makes me so mad! dawn tries her best to be a good bestfriend and an even better step-sisiter, but things always had to be maryanne's way! and dawn couldn't take it anymore, you go dawn! sometimes, you just can't be nice to the people who don't derserve it! and mary-anne does not deserve it at all!

5 out of 5 stars Dawn vs. Mary Anne.......2005-07-27

Dawn and Mary Anne are best friends... So they're SURE that being stepsisters will be fun.

They were wrong.

For one thing, Dawn and her mother are vegetarians, and Mary Anne and her father eat meat a lot. For another, before Mary Anne and her father moved in, it was common to find towels carefully put away... in the silverware drawer. And at Mary Anne's house, her father put his shirts in the closet alphabetically by color: Blue, brown, gray, red, white; like that.

As a side plot, Dawn and Mary Anne's friend Mallory Pike, who has SEVEN brothers and sisters, gets her SECOND case of chicken pox... Then three of her brothers get pnemonia... Then her other brother breaks his finger... Then one of her sisters sprains an ankle... Then her other sisters get bronchitis (I think)... Finally, her parents get injuries when they're playing tennis.

Will Dawn and Mary Anne ever speak to each other again? Will the Pike Plauque end? Read this book and find out!

4 out of 5 stars MA ia a Crybaby!.......2005-04-16

Mary Anne is such a crybaby. I mean, she's 13 and hasn't grown out of crying IN PUBLIC. She's scared when Dawn pulls this dopey prank on her, and she's so spoiled! In the chapter when she and Richard move to Dawn's, MA crys over little things like cleaning supplise, not to metion is way overprotective of Tiger! Of course the movers wouldn't drop a chair on him! Furthermore, MA blames everything on Dawn. I agree with Dawn - Mary Anne is the wicked stepsister of Stoneybrook!

I gave this book 5 stars, however, for Dawn. She tried her hardest to put up with her wicked stepsister and played an incredible prank on MA. Way to go, Dawn!

5 out of 5 stars Can't they be friends again?.......2005-03-28

When mary anne's father and Dawn's mother were married, Mary Anne And Dawn used to be Best Friends but now they are rivals. Mary Anne and Dawn are getting into a fight here. Jeff tries to stay out of it. But how will Mary Anne and Dawn be friends?

At the end of the book, There is a letter explaining to you why it is called "Dawn's Wicked Stepsister". Just guess that maybe that she has a stepsister and they also get into a fight

After the letter, There is a notebook page that explains when did you read it, when did you finish.....

After that, there is special photos about Dawn showing her when she was a baby, They also show her having a spooky mystery at their old farmhouse.

Later, ann Martin wrote something that read all the books about Dawn. I only have Dawn and the impossible Three, The Ghost At dawn's House and this book about Dawn and for the mysteries i Have Beware, Dawn!.

so keep in mind: If there are photo pictures of the BSC Members in those books, Order it.
HAPPY READING, BSC FANS!

As a long time reader of Matt Christopher books, Spike It ranks right up there with the best I have read. Every 6th to 8th grade student should have an opportunity to read this book, as it gives a valuable lesson in dealing with the sometimes tough situations teenagers face in life beyond the volleyball court. I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Spike It !!!.......2002-01-22

This is a very good book about a girl named Jamie who plays vollyball. She has a very great life until she gets a new step sister who takes everything shes ever wanted!
This is a great book that no collection would be complete without.

4 out of 5 stars spike it.......2001-03-12

I give this book four stars because it is a really good book. I could not put it down. This book is about volley ball.so i would recomend it for sports fans. It is about a girl who lost her mother and her father gets remarried. Her stepmom has a daughter the same age and they dont get along. this new girl is moving in on everything. the only thing she has to herself is volleyball and the new girl takes that away too! after everything that happens they do make up! i really liked this book. I would recomend it for a sixth grade girl. i think sixth grade because the words are in big print. i chose a girls because i is not a book that a boy would like.

Book Description

Now, nine years later, twenty-four-year-old Cyn is counting down the days to that fateful birthday. At first, living with Ami and Lila had been fun. Two of New Yorks hottest It-Girls, they know all the right people, own all the right things, and go to all the right parties. Sensible Cyn used to be content hiding in the shadows of her larger-than-life sisters. Now, Cyn realizes that she is no longer stepsister to the starsshe is personal assistant/slave to the stars (or Las Diablas, as the Latin press calls them). And, when Prince Charming arrives, Cyn must go head-to-head with her truly wicked stepsisters in order to win back her fathers fortune, her perfect man, and, most importantly, her life.

4 out of 5 stars Breezy and Fun.......2007-03-29

Cynthia "Cyn" Lopez can't compete with her two stepsisters, glamorous VJs at a popular TV station. So when she meets Eric, his love seems too good to be true. Can Cyn shake the curse of the meddling, evil steps? And will true love prevail? ¡Claro!

Atlanta's Berta Platt employs a simple prose, but this Latina take on an old tale is destined for success, especially with the younger crowd. Breezy and fun.

5 out of 5 stars MTV meets the Brothers Grimm.......2006-05-01

I started reading this and couldn't put it down! This wonderful variation of CINDERELLA is way humorous, sexy and totally rocks. Literally. I loved the whole nod to the MTV generation and the great characters. From the Devil Divas to Eric and Cynthia, this book was amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Cinderella Lopez.......2006-04-29

Cyn's step sisters Lila and Ami host a VJ show for RTV. While they throw tantrums, endlessly complain and pout because they are spoiled, beautiful, rich girls, Cyn does everything else. As their personal assistant and gopher, she is the one who takes care of any crisis that arises no matter how trivial. Cyn promised her dad before he died that she would live with her sisters until she is twenty five, when she will finally come into her inheritance. Once that day comes she is free to go as she pleases but until then she is stuck with the she-devils.

While taking a rare and much needed break from the sisters, Cyn goes to her favorite Starbucks and meets Eric. Eric is a really handsome, nice guy. Their contact is brief but pleasing and Cyn hopes to see him there again. Not long after their first meeting Cyn meets Eric at the Starbucks again and they decide to walk to the park together. They are soon laughing and having a good time together. When Eric invites Cyn to dinner, she agrees but insists on meeting Eric at the restaurant. Cyn is afraid that Lila and Ami will take him away from her, if they meet him. Because of her step sisters though Cyn doesn't show up at their dinner date. Eric waits then leaves and because of his schedule he doesn't see Cyn again for a while until he spots her trying to hail a cab in the pouring rain.

Cyn has been praying to see Eric again but he hasn't been to the Starbucks and they didn't exchange phone numbers. Sharing the cab brings them right back to the easy banter they had that first day they met. They make dinner plans again for the following Friday night.
As their relationship gets warmer Eric realizes that Cyn is hiding things from him just as he is from her. He doesn't want her to know that he is the rich owner of AmerCon, not the regular guy she thinks he is.

Cyn doesn't want Eric to know her step sisters are the famous VJ's and that she works at RTV because she is afraid the girls will sabotage her relationship with Eric, like they always have in the past.

Things get sticky when Eric invites Cyn to the awards show hosted by RTV, which of course she is already attending. After all she put the whole show together. Cyn finds out that Eric is the owner of AmerCon , the company taking over RTV at a meeting and her sisters ruin everything. Between Lila and Ami and the misunderstandings between Eric and Cyn, things get messy. Just when it looks like they can work it out another step sister induced drama leaves Cyn feeling betrayed and hurt yet again. Will Eric be Cyn's prince charming or will Lila and Ami continue to make her life miserable?

I really hated Lila and Ami. I wanted to stick daggers in their eyes on several occasions. Poor Cyn is this amazing, intelligent and beautiful woman, but she allows herself to be treated like dirt and her step sisters make an art form out of being petty, jealous and spoiled. Although Cinderella Lopez is sexy, modern and fun to read, I prefer my heroines to have to endure less heartache. I think Eric handled several things poorly and he made some decisions that were hurtful to Cyn. Cinderella Lopez has many romantic and entertaining moments and the revenge is sweet but I would have loved to see the ending pack more of a punch for Cyn. Cinderella Lopez is a good story, well written for sure but, not the kind of romantic fairy tale I enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars unique chica spin to Cinderella.......2006-04-04

While her stepsisters are TV stars, twenty-four years old Cynthia "Cyn" Lopez is more of a maid to her siblings Lila and Ami at RTV; she is at the spoiled beck and call of the famous "devil diva" twins. However, in less than a year she inherits her late dad's wealth that her stepmother currently controls and wastes; at that time her deathbed vow to her dad ends and the stepsister divas and momma diva will be out of her life.

At a gala, she manages to attend; Cyn meets AmerCon CEO Eric Sandoval, who is five years older than her. His company owns RTV. They begin to see one another, but each hides their profession from the other. Her stepsisters learn of her seeing Eric and dynamite her relationship. Desperate she turns to her friend, the makeup artist "fairy godmother" to help her win her Eric at the RTV Music Awards, but loses a glass Manolo and probably the man she loves.

CINDERELLA LOPEZ is an adult style Latino chick lit telling of the fairy tale. The story line is fun to follow as each of the characters steps out of the fairy tale and into a modern role. Fans will enjoy Cyn's transformation from doormat to lovely belle of the ball as she goes all out to win her "prince". A fun tale as Berta Platas provides a unique chica spin to Cinderella.
