This is one of the best Manga I've ever read! (Best for Korean, for manga in General, DNAngel rox a little more)It's funny, scary, and completly messed up! Perfect for any beginner, because it has almost all points, just not super powers, half animal people, and... that's about all it's missing! I LOVE IT!!! Buy it or face the consiquences! ^_^

3 out of 5 stars Cute, but not ethralling........2006-06-27

      The art is nice, of course, but I'm left wanting some of the chemistry between the characters as in DD. The characters get more interesting in the following volumes, but a little to fluffy for my taste. I'll still read it though, since it IS kara ^.^;;

*also, a correction to the above spotlight review: TWO of the guardians are searching for DY; the other two are protecting her.

3 out of 5 stars Cross-dressing, romance, angels, devils, spirit possession and er... (have I forgotten anything?).......2006-05-30

Yaay!!!!!!! The artist duo Kara and writer Lee Yuh-Hee of the glorious must-read Demon Diary series have created this Angel Diary series. However, although both series have similarities in artistry and style, Angel Diary is unconnected to the world and people of Demon Diary.

Chun-Yoo-Nim, the cute but not beautiful daughter of the royal family of heaven, is engaged by her father to the young king of hell. In order to escape her wedding she runs away to earth and poses as a normal teenage boy called Dong-Young. In the first volume of the series there are a few issues left unexplained, for example where is she living, if anyone is posing as her parents, and where does she get her money from. Four guardians from heaven who, would chance have it, are also posing as humans in the same school and vanquish evil spirits, are charged with finding her and bringing her back to heaven.

While trying to hide from the four guardians, Dong-Young also has to cope with being constantly possessed by ghosts and the strong advances from Bi-Wal another boy in her class. Of course Bi-Wal has a hidden idenitity and secretly knows that Dong Young is in fact a girl. Apart from the unanswered questions, the first volume also suffers from being slightly disjointed in places and not being as laugh-out funny as Demon Diary. The creators admit that they were rushed into finalizing this first volume.

However, the plus points far outweigh the minuses. The strory is funny and very very cute; Bi-Wal looks like a young version of the OMG gorgeous Eclipse from DD; there are echoes of the first volume of Eerie Querie with the spirit possession; cross-dressing elements; and a strong romantic theme throughout that was missing from DD. Indeed it is almost worth buying the volume for a copy of gorgeous half-dressed Bi-Wal picture at the beginning of the book.

If you are a fan of manhwa (Korean manga), the Demon Diary series, or Eerie Querie, this series is a must-buy. Hopefully the story will become stronger in the next volume and I can give it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars For fans of the fantastic Demon Diary.......2006-03-09

Demon Diary was one of the best manga series i've ever read. I just loved it so much, from the story to the characters it was pure gold. And though Angel Diary isn't connected at all to that wonderful manga, I'm seeing the greatness these creators possess shining through once again.
All the things treasured in Demon Diary, are back here in Angel Diary. The story thus far is one of pure hillarity. But even so, I can't help but wonder what will happen down the line, it's turing out to be quite an inchanting plot. The characters, of course, are to die for. Their personalities alone are just amazing, they are so easy to instantly fall in love with.
Even without Demon Diary, Angel Diary can stand alone as what is sure to be a great new manga. I can't wait to reach the climaxes the story is sure to have. Hopefully we'll get to spend more time with these characters then we did with Demon Diary's short (but amazing!) 7 volumes.

      5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-02-27

It's fantasy but also some reality and the characters are completely realistic as well. Great buy, have read it several times myself in a few days. I can't wait for the next volume!

1 out of 5 stars Self-important, snobbish, condescending, and silly.......2007-03-27

I just finished this book yesterday and I was happy to be done with it. I have never disliked a book enough to actually come onto amazon.com and write a scathing review of it, but this one inspired me. The only reason I finished it was to see if the main character was suddenly going to do something worthy of my attention, like grow up and appreciate her groom.

All the characters are flat and fit neatly into two categories: the "good guys" and the "bad guys". The "bad guys" are all "rednecks"; sports-obsessed, war-loving, anti-gay rights, corn-dog eating Republicans who all have horribly snotty children. The "good guys" are portrayed as enlightened, socially aware, psychology-hating, liberal-thinkers who raise unrealistically well-behaved children and think that Manhattan is the only cultured place on earth. What the "good guys" really come across as are self-absorbed, overly politically correct snobs who see phallic symbols at every turn. (I think the phallic symbol references are supposed to be funny.)

With all the Jane Austen quotes and references, I gather that the writer was trying to make a satirical commentary on our times as Austen did on hers. But Harayda misses the two things that make Austen so likable and powerful a writer: the "good guys" have human flaws that make us like them, relate to them, and feel empathetic towards them and the "bad guys" are either comical or pathetic, making us either laugh or feel sympathy. This book did none of these things. It insulted, belittled, and condescended at every turn. By the end, I was cringing when I saw Austen's quotes at the top of each chapter. It was a complete insult to her.

Lily, the main character, is a spoiled, snobbish, self-absorbed brat who pouts instead of opening her mouth and sharing her feelings with her fiancé. She is spineless and allows her parents and Mark (the fiancé) to dictate her life. She is also strangely obsessed with corn dogs. She doesn't want to get married and hasn't told Mark that she loves him, yet she accepts his proposal. She hates her mother, the house Mark's father bought them, his sisters, the town they live in, her boss, and her job and yet she does nothing pro-active about changing or coming to terms with any of this - she just whines and pouts and compares everyone to obscure literary characters. She views herself as a powerless victim and everyone else as merciless oppressors. I felt like I was reading about a spoiled 16-year-old.

Mark is a flat, boring, too-good-to-be-true character but even with that, he is way too good for self-absorbed Lily. He proposes to her before she has even said "I love you" and wants to marry her instead of living with her first. I kept wanting him to leave Lily and maybe teach her something.

Alas, there is no major transformation of the main character. She doesn't learn any lessons or come to terms with her own character flaws - Oh, wait. I forgot; she doesn't have any. Instead, everyone suddenly realizes that she was right all along and she gets her way in everything. And everyone admires her for it.

No wonder I found this book at the Borders outlet instead of the proper store.

5 out of 5 stars As it happens, Cleveland does suck.......2007-03-11

Please ignore the poor reviews. They obviously come from the "troglodytes" of Cleveland. Look it up, Clevelanders.

3 out of 5 stars Not terrible, but not terrific.......2005-04-04

I got seriously sick of the Jane Austen, as well as the author's self-congratulatory literary comments throughout the book -- I felt like the author was trying to show off a degree in Literature to the Unwashed. The ending was incredibly stupid -- not at all what I expected, and utterly disappointing. The reason for 3 stars and not 1 star was because it wasn't completely awful -- I did like to see how Jerry Springer-esque her views of her in-laws and family could get.

2 out of 5 stars An Accident if you decide to read............2004-09-28

Most likely this is the first and Last book Janice Harayda will write. The Accidental Bride, Harayda's first is nothing but an accident.

Lily is a 20 something is about to get married, to one of Ohio's richest, but pulls out only to find herself making matters worse for herself. Sounds good. Yet it is not.

Harayda never gives us a description of the main character, let alone any other character in the book. Its hard to read a book where the mental image you have in your head is a paper doll. Every character is so flawed that you can not get past that fact alone. No character is likeable. Hands down. How can you like a lead character that forces herself to get married to a man who loves her, only to fake loving him to get a divorce after the wedding. Talk about low.

Then there are the facts and the non-stop Jane Austen bits. Lily our main character lives in Ohio, only to make it sound like hell. Hello!!! I live in the Ohio Valley, and we do not have crime rates that are bigger than NYC's, a climate where it snows in September (without a nor easter), we are not rich and live in look alike communities (our economy is not the best right now), and no we are not soooo out of style that we make Trailor Park Trash look like Naomi Campbell.

Jane Austen!?? You will never pick up one of her novels if you read this book, for the author dwells on Jane the whole book that she forgets what matters...the plot of her own book.

I would like to say that you could give the book a chance, but heck dont waste your time. I would have given it one star had I not had enough will to finish the thing.

Skip this read and pick up a Jane Green novel...or even one of Austens' great novels.

5 out of 5 stars A humorous book that made me think.......2004-04-07

I really enjoyed this book and in fact was on this Amazon page hoping to see if there are more books by this author. The book is not Jane Austen and is not meant to be. However it is an witty look at contemporary mores involving courtship, love, romance, and marriage. It made me think about my own choices and my expectations of others. And it made me laugh! And also vow never to visit Ohio....

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2005-03-08

I enjoyed this book a lot because it really showed what life was like during the Texas revolution. It was about a young girl named Belle Wood who must endure the hardships of the war against Mexico and the perilous Runaway Scrape. It sucks the reader in with its suspense and does a very good job of giving you all of the true facts of the Texas Revolution. I would definently reccomend this book to young and old readers alike. It was wonderful!

      5 out of 5 stars Evelyn Lau-Contemporary Artistic Genius.......2006-12-11

I've read a good many non-fiction-autobiographies. This book is the most viscerial yet cerebral, poignant, vulnerably heart-wretching; Honest, courageous mind boggling work of artistic genius, I have ever come across.

A sheer out & out mind-bender. A work of transcendent catharsis & tragic emotional metamorphosis, from a phenomenal brilliant writer.

After assimilating Ms. Lau's enthralling, somewhat beguiling stylism, one is simply left, torn asunder, as her spellbinding beautific word pictures are rendered in such astute & sultry erudition.

Evelyn Lau's comprehensive body of work is entrancingly seductive.Hauntingly beautiful & adoit; Scintillating, yet melancholy.Enigmatic & stupefying.Ultimately, I am left dumbstruck.

Her writing has an innate ability to create an obsession & infatuation in a reader, that melts away any notion of steel remnant cold calculated logic, that men may attempt to employ toward women. The games over...

On the meridian of art in written form, we find the pleatau of spirit; Immortal soul, eternal love...embodied within Evelyn Lau's art.

Once you have read her work, your life absolutely, will never be the same again...

1 out of 5 stars Poor Me. I'm A Victim And It Is Everybody Else's Fault!.......2006-08-19

This is a very tiresome and tedious book about a girl named Evelyn who ran away from home at the age of 14 because her mother yelled a lot and her father was out of work most of the time. Sadly there are millions of young people in this same situation but they don't exchange an unhappy home life for the mean, homeless streets. The author devotes page after page of an endless and futile merry-go- round of prostitution and then seeking solace through drugs. She "hooks" up with this lowlife loser named Larry who she thinks is a "nice guy" because he readily supplies her with Valium, Alcohol,Mandrax, Methadone and LSD.Evelyn tries valiantly to live up to her self created image of a tortured artist because of her scribblings in her journal but all we are left with is 276 pages of 'Poor Me" and self inflicted suffering and self pity.

      2 out of 5 stars Teenage ennui.......2006-08-01

Before reading this I had high expectations of it. After reading it, mostly in between classes, I'm sadly disappointed. If you're a fan of Lau's poetry you may gain some insight into them through this journal.
Honest? Yes. Brutally frank? I don't think so. Like others have said: rather than an account of struggle and hardship, all we have here is a bored teenager who did a 2-year stint as a street worker.
I also question her reason for running away. Sure, overbearing ethnic parents can be stifling and problematic when you've grown up in a western world with (somewhat) different values and ideals to those of your parents. Fair enough, they locked her in her room most of the time and forced her to study; but is that really that bad? It wasn't like they were feeding her a diet consisting of only two-minute noodles and only letting her out to have showers.

4 out of 5 stars Remarkable document, less than remarkable .......2005-04-10

This is a document Evelyn kept from a remarkable phase of her life as a drug addict and prostitute on the streets of Vancouver, and a teenage and ethnic one at that. It shows some of her survival instincts which exist within her and which fight to keep her alive through it all. However, as I read on, I found myself having less and less respect for her. It went from respect for a person who fought to get out of circumstances in life she couldn't stand - not that it was horrid or anything, just not to her liking - to thinking how pathetic she was to have just wanted the change and then making herself out to be a victim of everything. I don't believe she owns up to much, or if she did, it was all "talk", cause her actions didn't back it up. By the end, she came across as a spineless jellyfish with the survival instincts of one to fight and survive whenever it happened, but her life became meaningless without the adversity that gave it a purpose to survive. She can't be happy as a "normal" person without death half staring her in the face or walking closely behind, but is a victim otherwise cause it's stalking her so closely. Interesting insight into her life, yes, but it became difficult to read without judgment, and turns monotonous of the same "routine" after a while. Better than the average book, sure, but not sure by how much. Thus the 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The New Ann Frank.......2003-04-16

Once you start this book, Evelyn becomes you. I had to just keep reading and reading...to finish it, desperate for a happy ending. It is the TRUE diary of a young girl - dabbling in prositution, drugs, therapy and homelessness. This book offers great insight in to the mind of a adolesent, and reminds one of a not so distant past of battling the same demons. Evelyn's world view is set to critique all that crosses her path...including our correctional services, family services, and basic social acceptability. Pretty smart for a 15 year old. Many wonderful thoughts, feelings and ideas can be gained from reading this book. I would recommend this book as required reading for youths who typically DON'T read. Its a great starting point and is sure to capture their attention. But nonetheless...a great story that in the end, any reader feels privilaged to have been on the journey.

5 out of 5 stars A Definite Must for Anyone Who Grew Up in the 60s and 70s.......2005-05-09

Cat Tovin, the protagonist, is a brave, literate, sharp young girl who takes to the road in search of a better life. She meets some amazing humans during her treck north from Harrisburgh, Pennsylvania. Whether you are 16 or 60, this is a really good read!

5 out of 5 stars Out of Print?!?!.......2001-04-14

I read this in Middle School & loved it so much I passed it around to everyone I knew...(which is why I don't have it now!) Now that I'm 34, I could do with another reading. I've been wracking my brain trying to find something to pull my own two children (9 & 12) back from the brink of MTV/PlayStation induced desensitization. (Not that there's anything inherently wrong w/MTV or PlayStation. I recognize that artists & producers need to shock to remain commercial.)I tried Tolkein, but they're not interested if it's not a video game. And, no offense intended, but Harry Potter just doesn't fit the bill. (Though,Rudyard Kipling's Jabberwocky has been a family favorite for generations.) I've never met anyone who'd ever heard of Runaway's Diary before, I'm so glad to know others are keeping it alive even though it's out of print. Now off to find that hard-to-find Robert E. Howard colletion of 3 short stories "The IronMan".

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2000-03-29

I am currently a student attending high school and this book has inspired me in so many ways. This story of Cat, who in order to find peace and self-discovery, has run away, and in her journey keeps a diary. This diary contains her beliefs, ideas, and the people and circumstances she encounters. It's a shame this book is out of print, because if it were back in print, so many more people could have the pleasure of reading this great book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1999-12-09

I first read this book back in high school, A time when most of us look inward to find just who we are, Cat's honesty with herself is refreshing and inspiring. I have kept a copy of this book over the years and still read it now and then, It never fails to inspire me to be more then I think I can be, this book would be great reading for all kids.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed by the girl's spirit of independence........1999-04-09

I can not understand why this book is out of print. I had read it in japanese translation and now want to read it again in original english version. The girl went out to the road with her dog and a copy of Walden. On the road, she met several kind of people. The diary describe her reflective and contemplating thinkings triggered by each day's experience and by reading the Walden. Calm mind and hard spirit of independence. Hunger and coldness sometimes weaken her determination but she endure them. It would be better to fall on the road facing toward tomorrow. The girl is not a runaway but a worrior on her warpath to herself.
