Book Description

Since 1954, Twenty-Four Hours a Day has become a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics throughout the world. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this "little black book" offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. A spiritual resource with practical applications to fit our daily lives. "For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision" is part of the Sanskrit proverb quoted at the beginning of the book which has become one of the basic building blocks for a life of sobriety. In addition to a thought, meditation and prayer for each day of the year, this handy, pocket-sized volume also contains the Serenity Prayer and the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a simple, yet effective way to help us relate the Twelve Steps to everyday life and helps us find the power not to take that first drink each day. Twenty-Four Hours a Day turns 50, touches millions! Read news article on the book with a heartbeat. Article courtesy of the Voice, Winter 2004.

Can't start my day w/o this one...have used it for going on 20 years...AA now has their own meditations book;but, I never switched from this one. After all these years, it still hits home and has been a foundation of my recovery...

5 out of 5 stars Alcohol killing you? There is life in this book ; ).......2007-04-26

"Before taking a night-club DJ's job in the 80's writer did not drink; 9 years later on especially grim days my consumption approached a gallon of cheap vodka a day and I could not function. Over the last dozen years of clean & sober living, the "grace" of Almighty God led me to AA, AA's "grace" led me to many new places including this treasured little book (head & shoulders above anything else in its field). "24 Hours a Day" is composed of a short, meditational trilogy for each day of the year, sourced from Hazelden (the world's largest addiction recovery program) and another blessed little book (buy it also from Amazon) titled "God Calling". Concluding, am surprised by the book's "only four star" rating; for me there are not enough stars in the universe to pay it, Hazelden and "AA" sufficient tribute. Succinctly put, if you have a substance abuse problem of any genre "24 Hours" WILL help you beyond words. But if you are like the chap whose impoverished review spoke of "Repetitive magical drivel for people who want to stick in a rut.", likely it WON'T help. You'll need a book on "ATTITUDE" for that. Or put another way, "Sir - did you forget to say no to drugs today?" ; )

3 out of 5 stars good sobriety but heavy for the mornings.......2003-02-24

i picked up this book a little bit ago when my sober living home was using it to run its morning meditation group. i am not a morning person and because of this i found it was hard to wrap my mind around what was written. there are alot of good thoughts for the day but i prefer something a little bit lighter to start my day off with.

5 out of 5 stars One page per day.......2007-08-07

That's all you need to help stay focused on recovery. This is a pocket sized paperback. Therefore it is convenient to keep handy. Some good places for this book are the glove box of the car, night stand, purse, kitchen table, the bathroom, or wherever it helps you to remember to read this everyday.

Each page is labeled by date and contains: A.A. thought for the day(which contains a question as well), meditation for the day, and prayer for the day.

This is a good book for all people to stay balanced and focused on the spiritual side of life. You do not need to be in A.A. for it to be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars twenty-four hours a day excellent.......2007-06-11

AN EXCELLENT WAY TO START YOUR DAY. IT STARTS THE DAY RIGHT AND IF YOUR DAY IS HECTIC THINK BACK UPON THE READING. DON'T FORGET TO BREATH DEEP AND REALIZE WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IS YOU ONLY HAVE TO HANDLE IT FOR 24 HOURS A DAY.

5 out of 5 stars sober23and counting.......2007-05-21

The last writer is on a Jesus soap box. This book and AA meetings have made a better person, a more loving person and a better Christen out of me. All recovery depends on a decision to trust God, make amends for past sins, and live a clean and sober life. Most people may want to stop abusing but cannot or will not change the way they think and live. I believe Jesus delivered me but someone else may think Buddha helped them. I tried the way of religion and the way of no religion and still was miserable. This book guided me to a new spiritual life that no church or religion could do.

1 out of 5 stars AA Success.......2007-02-21

1. The Twelve Steps do not work as a program of recovery from drug or alcohol problems.
o The A.A. failure rate ranges from 95% to 100%. Sometimes, the A.A. success rate is actually less than zero, which means that A.A. indoctrination is positively harmful to people, and prevents recovery. Some tests have shown that even receiving no treatment at all for alcoholism is much better than receiving A.A. treatment:
o One of the most enthusiastic boosters of Alcoholics Anonymous, Professor George Vaillant of Harvard University, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. (AAWS), showed by his own 8 years of testing of A.A. that A.A. was worse than useless -- that it didn't help the alcoholics any more than no treatment at all, and it had the highest death rate of any treatment program tested -- a death rate that Professor Vaillant himself described as "appalling". While trying to prove that A.A. treatment works, Professor Vaillant actually proved that A.A. kills. After 8 years of A.A. treatment, the score with Dr. Vaillant's first 100 alcoholic patients was: 5 sober, 29 dead, and 66 still drinking.
(Nevertheless, Vaillant is still a Trustee of Alcoholics Anonymous, and he still wants to send all alcoholics to A.A. anyway, to "get an attitude change by confessing their sins to a high-status healer." That is cult religion, not a treatment program for alcoholism.)
o The A.A. dropout rate is terrible. Most people who come to A.A. looking for help in quitting drinking are appalled by the narrow-minded atmosphere of fundamentalist religion and faith-healing. The A.A. meeting room has a revolving door. The therapists, judges, and parole officers (many of whom are themselves hidden members of A.A. or N.A.) continually send new people to A.A., but those newcomers vote with their feet once they see what A.A. really is. Even A.A.'s own triennial surveys, conducted by the A.A. headquarters (the GSO), say that:
81% of the newcomers are gone within 30 days,
90% are gone in 3 months, and
95% are gone at the end of a year.
That automatically gives A.A. a failure rate of at least 95%. But the GSO does not count all of those people who only attend a few meetings before quitting -- they don't qualify as "members". (That amounts to "cherry-picking".) If we included them, then the numbers would be much worse.

First there is the propaganda technique of "everybody's doing it": "AA or a similar Twelve-Step program is an integral part of almost all successful recoveries".
That is a complete falsehood. The vast majority of the successful people recover without A.A. or any "support group". It's what "everybody" is doing.
Then they use the propaganda techniques of use of the passive voice and vague suggestions: "It is widely believed that not including a Twelve-Step program in a treatment plan can put a recovering addict on the road to relapse."
It is widely believed by whom? And what do those unnamed people know? What are their qualifications? Are they doctors? Medical school professors? Or salesmen for a 12-Step treatment center? Why should we care what some unnamed invisible fools allegedly believe, anyway?
The authors also use the propaganda technique of fear-mongering: you will be "on the road to relapse" -- you will probably die -- unless you practice Bill Wilson's Twelve Step cult religion.
And then the fluff-headed Pollyanna attitude is outrageous: Just going to the wonderful A.A. meetings is supposedly all that is needed to fix some alcoholics.
But since A.A. has a zero-percent success rate above and beyond the normal rate of spontaneous remission, that cannot possibly be true.

5 out of 5 stars Daily Reading and Daily Living is the Key to Sobriety........2006-07-20

I kept this book with me for the first year of sobriety and mindfully lived what it said throughout my daily life. Following this I bought and utilized many other daily meditation books and continue to do so. I also wrote and published my own form of this book. To read and live inspiring words each day is effective, healing, and will lead to success and serenity in your life. Highly recommended also of course recommend my book, " Your Daily Walk with the Great Minds of the past and Present" Check it out and begin transforming your life.

David Bodanis, author of The Secret House and The Secret Garden, applies his wit and curiosity to another invisible realm: the insides of our bodies. Bodanis wraps his thought-provoking investigation of the natural world in the story of a family's typical day. We follow the baby's explorations of the house, go out with the family to the mall, and experience the daughter's first kiss. Of course, your mind still might be reeling from breakfast and the orange juice--"a liquid which contains embalming fluid, varnish solvent, vinegar, and nail polish remover ... and a certain amount of real orange juice, too."

All that microscopic reality--the benign bacteria feasting on our faces, the widening of the pupils as Baby's gaze meets Mom's or Dad's ("the tiny muscles controlling the pupils in the dad's eyes suddenly tug wider. Males who don't have children rarely show this universal sign of interest.")--triggers a host of facts, both fascinating and appalling; that aforementioned parental gaze segues into an explanation of the ingredients of baby food ("boiled and skimmed pigs' feet extract is often used, though in a pinch the scooped inner pith of discarded fruit can be added, too. Chalk is often added next"). And that's the least of it...

Bodanis's scrutiny is fortified with more than two dozen color photographs from the Science Photo Library that show the world we live in but, thankfully, never see. It's amusing, disturbing, and cheerful in the face of "Ugh!" and "Ah!"--the perfect book to trigger lively conversations. One thing's for certain: you'll never again complain that your ordinary day is just too ordinary.

Book Description

An extraordinary look at the ordinary world

Ever wonder what makes the icing on your danish so white? (Hint: the same thing that makes the paint on your walls so white.) Pondering the mysterious force of romantic attraction? (Often, we are drawn to those similar to us in looks, opinions, and even number of siblings.) Do you sometimes feel as if your home is too crowded? (You will be shocked at the number of microscopic houseguests who share our dwellings.)

Following a typical family on a typical weekend day, The Secret Family examines what is happening inside family members as they eat, talk, get dressed, walk, and drive to the local mall -- as well as how they interact with the dust mites, bacteria, tapeworms and innumerous other microbes with whom they share their lives. Full of brilliant, state-of-the-art photography, astonishing facts, and real-life science, this book exposes the worlds and histories behind our everyday routines and surroundings. David Bodanis is our lively tour guide on this adventure and ensures that the familiar will never look quite the same again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredible journey into things we don't see.......2003-02-01

This is one of those books, which is highly informative, entertaining and has "repeat" value. I read this book twice in succession and even though i rented it from the library, i feel so compelled by the information in it that i am purchasing a copy for my bookshelf . I know, i will refer to it often to reaffirm to myself ,nothing is ordinary as it seems.
For eg: Postage stamps, those tiny square pieces which we lick , stick and forget. I quote how this book unravels it " Postage stamps are an intricate layered sandiwch of chemicals. The glue is a true masterpiece of the chemist's art. Think of a problem. Not only does the glue have to be sticky enough to hold onto a envelope, but it has not to be so sticky that it grabs permanently on your tongue. It has to do this with onlythe amount of salive we're happy to dribble off and then it has to stick to the envelope firmly, but still you give you a moment or two to readjust its position. Finally, even once the chemists have worked out something that's tongue attractive and humidity resistant and briefly free-sliding, they still have have to throw it out if it tastes bad. Or offends anybody's religion. Ir is too expensive. Or is too high in calories."

This is just a sample. The books jumps and hops in a free wheeling away across many varied aspects of our lives, commenting and shedding light on them. For eg, Chicken breast is found white in the fast food centers, stuffed in salads or other food menu. WHy? Normally food tends to be green or reddish or brown, but very rarely white. This is because of the sedentary lifestyle of the modern-day chicken. The flight muscles in the breast don't get used much, so there's no reason for oxygen sotring red blood cells to be soaked darkly through them. AS a result, the breast comes out white.

One thing you will definitely remember after reading this book is that you are never alone. Tuck yourself in the cleanest of bedsheets? Even then, there will be around 40000 pillow mites (ghastly miniature Rhino look alikes) crawling over the pillow.

Right now, on our faces are armies of demodex mites. Harmless creatures feasting on our skin, unvisible to us.

The pictures in the book are incredible. Read and enjoy!

cheers!

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting read..........2001-07-13

I cannot elaborate much further than the other reviews already have. Simply stated, this book makes you think about everyday things in a different way. I am glad I purchased and read it. Yes, the photographs are amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulously frightening.......1998-04-05

This book provides a fascinating look into what goes on in our homes daily. The descriptions of what we eat, where we sleep, and how our bodies protect us from (too much) harm are incredible. Bodanis has researched nearly every aspect of family life, and explains to us what it all means. My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't have enough photographs. Those that it does have are splendid, however.

5 out of 5 stars mind blowing!.......1997-12-30

It's not often you read a book that opens your mind to entire new worlds. Reading this made me feel like an explorer who has just discovered a world hidden in plain sight. Every page made me think "WOW"! This is a mind-expanding book.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, entertaining, informative - a great read - buy it.......1997-09-28

The Secret Family by David Bodanis is a popular science book with a difference - it is funny and entertaining, as well as being informative. He has a talent for exposing hidden worlds in the most mundane of everyday activities: the food we eat, our shopping routines, family relationships and the way our bodies work. Plus he has the most amazing colour photographs of soap bubbles, scouring pads, eggshells, sweat droplets, CDs, and salt etc, magnified so much that they expose a different and beautiful world.

He takes an ordinary family - parents, teenage daughter, ten year old son, baby and a dog - and traces them through a lazy Saturday breakfast and visit to the mall. After reading this you will never look at your supermarket orange juice or danish pastry with quite the same relish. You will eye your friends and family suspiciously as they carry huge populations of microscpic mites (demodex) on their eyelashes regardless of how clean they are and when two people kiss, the mites intermingle and new populations are born! Bodanis scatters his narrative with interesting curiosities - how the yellow sticky notes were invented, the origins of the doberman, the arbitrary address system for mail in parts of Japan, and how supermarkets use synthetic smells, colour and music to get us to walk slowly, buy more, and eat faster.

I'm a fan of Bodanis, and recommend his earlier books too (The Secret House and The Secret Garden). So if you want to give yourself a treat, read this book, and then buy one for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Enlightening.......2001-08-26

As more businesses move to 24/7 operations, round-the-clock scheduling will become an hotter issue. This is not new. Some companies, some industries, have been operating with a 24-hour schedule since the 19th century. Now the issue carries greater importance since workers are increasingly concerned about work-life balance, career development, and alternative work schedules. The author of this book, Richard Coleman, is a consultant with over two decades of experience helping a wide range of employers develop the Best Cost schedule that balances business needs like productivity and profit with health and safety requirements and employee desires. All these factors must be taken into consideration, and there is an almost infinite number of designs that can be applied. Coleman's experience comes out early in the book. I was fascinated by all the factors involved in determining the right schedule. My learning was enhanced by example after example from the author's work that illuminated the reading. During the first few chapters, I felt like I was reading a continuous commercial for Coleman's consulting firm, but this barrage eased as the book moved into the latter chapters. While I am not by any means an expert in scheduling, I learned a lot from this book. OK, I didn't know anything about scheduling before I read this book. However, I now have a healthy respect and understanding for what goes into developing a work schedule for a round-the-clock operation. Human resource professionals, plant managers, and others with operational knowledge of staffing and scheduling will gain considerably more than I did because of their familiarity with the topic. Coleman covers all aspects of shift work schedules, even including Circadian rhythms. It's all here. Readers will learn how to better use time and human resources to maximize return on capital investment and equipment. They'll learn how to achieve greater results without overstaffing, certainly a serious issue in today's labor-scarce world. If your interest is in squeezing more productivity from every hour of the day-without squeezing employees, this book is for you. Ignore the 1995 copyright. The principles taught in this volume are high relevant, quite timely for what's happening in the early 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Best weaving with words and emotions........2006-10-24

I read this book in my teens. The book was on my parents' book shelves. It was a Hebrew translation from the German. When this was translated, Israel was just reborn, after 2000 years of exile. The Hebrew language was a dormant language that came to life. I am now passed my midlife & will never forget the strong impression that this story made on me. The strongest image that was stuck in my head is the one where the woman in the story was able to sense the mood, agitation or thrill that was expressed in the hands, without looking at the face,of the young Casino gambler. The story is flowing & as in all of Stefan Zweig's writings, it penetrates to the heart & sole of the characters. It is a work of art, like the most beautiful weaved carpet. Few weeks ago, I was visiting my brother's house & saw the book that I read as teenager on his shelf. I was so excited. I borrowed it from him & reread it in one gulp. The thing that amazed me was that after so many years, I felt like I never left the book, just that the translation felt to me so archaic. It actually added an unusual taste of nostalgia. I tried to get the book in a new translation in Hebrew, but couldn't find it. There are new translations of Stefan Zweig into Hebrew, but, unfortunately, as other reviewers commented on, this amazingly sensitive writer is not getting the place that he deserves to have. It is such a pity. Luckily enough, my English reading is as good as my Hebrew, so I looked for it in Amazon & found it. In my old Hebrew translation, there are 2 more stories. A very special one is "Burning Secret". This is as sensitive & cleverly weaved as the "24 hours in the life of a woman".
Don't miss any of the above.
