3 out of 5 stars The Logic Book.......2007-04-15

I have purchased and had a logic class using this book. On the one hand this book is excellent for the seasoned logic student. It really is. On the other hand unless you have an understanding text-supplementing professor, and unless you are seasoned logic student, then in my opinion this book is simply an 'unfair read', if not an incomprehensible read, even to the clever student. Only after learning Metalogic from other sources, was this book eventually treasured by myself for what it is. I have read the many comments here and they all seem genuinely on target. For a great introduction to Metalogic try a 1971 book called Metalogic(Hunter)UCP. Geoffrey Hunter's book is the ABC's of Metalogic. Also, I agree the 'assumptions' this book makes are riduculous. The very 'assumptions' that baffled me contradicted the very concept of step-by-step logical reasoning that the book was supposed to advocate. ( In my opinion if you think there were no assumptions in this book, then its because you knew of them from other sources.) Also, the book seemed to 'hide' or transform standard logic terms such as, for example 'prenix formulaes' for non-standard terms. So in my opinion you must know alternative terminonlogy before you can understand what some chapters are talking about. How I scrambled (and I know others did too) to keep up!Only after knowing the intermediate steps, does the LOGIC BOOK show, upon reflection, its true and genuine glory, but by then its too late, and your GPA has gone up in smoke. But if you really want a LOGIC BOOK to step you all the way to Metalogic, then this book really is the one to get. This is my opinion based on experiences using this book. All of my really intelligent graduate classmates (sharp as pins!) groaned at the use of this book. It is fair question to ask as to why logic, using this book, turned, for my class, into a genuine life-altering GPA busting nightmare. However, and again, in the wee hours of the night, I do see the wealth that this book offers, and it is, genuinely, a pleasure to posess. 'Heads up!' Dig?

3 out of 5 stars It Depends..........2005-11-16

This logic textbook covers sentential and predicate logic. There are chapters on semantics, syntax, derivations, truth-trees and metatheory. Each chapter also contains many examples and exercises.
In my opinion, the chapters on truth-trees and derivations are the best. I found this book's method for universal and existential generalization and instantiation much easier to apply than the method introduced in some other textbooks. The most difficult chapters are those on metatheory.
I would have liked more guidance on constructing proofs in English and a more general outline of the method for mathematical induction. Standard paraphrases are introduced and rigorously applied for translating from English to SL but unfortunately not for translating from English to PL, which is more difficult.
I agree with a previous reviewer that this book could have made better use of graphics. There are some tables and boxes for definitions, strategies and lists of rules, but perhaps not enough. There are glossaries at the end of most chapters, but these could be extended.
While this book does not require any previous exposure to logic, it may prove difficult for many without this exposure or a patient instructor. Whether this textbook will be helpful to you probably also depends on your interests in logic. I was not interested in the chapters on metatheory. The book does not cover inductive, traditional, modal, epistemic or deontic logic.
Copi's "Introduction to Logic", Gensler's "Introduction to Logic" and Kahane and Tidman's "Logic and Philosophy: A Modern Introduction" are easier and more user friendly than this book and introduce some important areas of logic not covered in this book. If you want a good introduction to logic to help you evaluate and construct arguments for philosophy, then I recommend any of these three books. For those who want a more difficult and focused introduction I recommend "The Logic Book".

5 out of 5 stars Logic courses text book.......2005-10-03

This book was used as a college level text for a Philosophy course in introductory Logicc. As a guide to SL, I found it easy to understand and informative when in conjunction with a structured lecture.

3 out of 5 stars Eh. It's Okay, I guess........2005-06-05

This one's okay. A bit dry and tedious, but okay. There are better logic textbooks out there, though. If you're a philosophy major, I'd recommend either Harry Gensler's or Irving Copi's Introduction to Logic. They're much more interesting than this one. If you're a comp-sci major, you'd be better served by books specifically devoted to digital logic. For philosophy majors who want to go beyond basic logic, I highly recommend books by Graham Priest, particularly his Intro to Non-Classical Logic.

4 out of 5 stars not concise, but still a good learning aide.......2004-05-21

This book might be a good addition to the library of a self-studier who has an ample amount of time or perhaps has little experience in logic or mathematics. Its explicitness really helps on the more difficult chapters, although this can frustrate, too, because it's hard to study when the rules aren't laid out in one particular spot. But overall, it's not so bad.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Own For Any Looney Tunes Fan.......2007-03-17

The most fully illustrated book on every Looney Tunes cartoon to date.Every single Warner Bros. cartoon from 1930 to 1989.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars For the cartoon conisseurs!.......2004-06-22

Here is an illustated guide to the Warner Bros. cartoons commonly known as LOONEY TUNES AND MERRIE MELODIES. Every cartoon was either a Looney Tune or Merrie Melodie. These include both the short subjects and feature films. One of WB's biggest cartoon stars,Bugs Bunny appeared in tens of cartoons in a 25 year period,1940 to 1964. Bugs' first official appearance was in 1940's A WILD HARE. A few earlier cartoons such as PRESTO CHANGE-O,HARE-UM SCARE-UM and ELMER'S CANDID CAMERA(featuring Elmer Fudd) featured a similar-looking prototype. WB's other big stars include Daffy Duck who debuted in or around 1938. The star's name appeared in some titles of his cartoons such as DAFFY DUCK & EGGHEAD,DAFFY DUCK IN HOLLYWOOD and DAFFY DUCK AND THE DINOSAUR. Same thing with Bugs Bunny(BUGS BUNNY AND THE THREE BEARS,BASEBALL BUGS,BUGS BUNNY RIDES AGAIN and BUGS BUNNY GETS THE BOID). Also Elmer Fudd(ELMER'S CANDID CAMERA,ELMER'S PET RABBIT and GOODNIGHT ELMER). Other big stars are Sylvester,a mean-spirited cat always wanting to kill sweet little canary Tweety. Later stars include Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote,Speedy Gonzales and Foghorn Leghorn(Foghorn first appeared in the 40's). There's also Porky Pig who first appeared in the 1935 Merrie Melodie I HAVEN'T GOT A HAT. Porky starred in many black and white Looney Tunes since that cartoon. This book lists synopses for every cartoon produced by WB. It also gives release dates and production credits with directors. I like the awesome concept of the variously colored rings bordering the beginning and end title cards. Over the years, they changed colors. The sizes changed also as did the studio logo(the original light blue changed to red). Some cartoons made between 1937 and 1940 featured multi-colored rings. WB still produces short subject cartoons occasionally but does more feature films today. This book went to press before the 1996 release of SPACE JAM,a semi-animated film starring basketball great Michael Jordan and featuring WB's cartoon stars. I dedicate the book to the memories of longtime director Chuck Jones,actor-director tex Avery(Jones and Avery later went to MGM),Mel Blanc(voice of Bugs Bunny) and actress Bea Benaderet who later appeared on TV's The Beverly Hillbillies and starred on Petticoat Junction.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource, but the index could be a little better.......2004-03-06

This book is a great resource to read about these classic Warner Brothers cartoons. It would have been nice if the book had included more groupings by characters in the index. The book is 390 pages long, so it seems that they could have included a few extra pages to list all of the appearances of Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Now I know I've seen all the cartoons of one series.......2003-07-02

I have had a quest to see(and act out)all of the cartoons of Wile E. Coyote and Sylvester. But some episodes appeared on cable networks more than others, and others I saw, but missed the episode name. So I purchased this book to find out which cartoons I've actually seen. It describes the episodes with details such as the ACME products in each episode, the methods the villain uses, and other interesting facts. Buy it if you wish to see all the Warner Bros. cartoons of all or one of the characters!

4 out of 5 stars If you love the Looney Tunes, here is your book.......2002-06-19

It's easy to sit back and watch the re-runs of Warner Brothers cartoons and just let them wash over us, but that would ignore all of the work that went into them. We would not get an appreciation of the sheer number of cartoons produced. Luckily Beck and Friedwald were obsessed enough to pull them all together in one volume. Going on a year by year basis, from Bosko cartoons of 1930 to the last gasps of 1969 (and the reawakening in the 80's) the authors provide a landmark reference showing the premiere date, the credits given in the openings, and a thorough synopsis of the action. But of course any reference like this would be an oddity if it was just a listing. But we are provided with two ways to find information - a title index showing the entry (all purpose for grabbing when watching that cartoon), and an index based upon appearances of 15 of the most popular characters. Want to find out when did Marvin the Martian appear? It's here. (1948 - Haredeveil Hare). Wonder how many cartoons starred Daffy Duck - count 'em up. (a whole lot) Just sitting back and reading synopses shows the breadth of jokes and settings that the artists were able to take advantage of. You can also see the repetition that occured when the writers fell into a rut. Just a great book to have on the shelf to pull down when you want and a great guilty pleasure!

    Book Description

In this intriguing volume, Merrie G. Klapp explains how regulatory decisions in such crucial areas as public health, technological safety, and environmental quality are molded and recast. She finds that "scientific uncertainty" is a key factor, with agencies, interest groups, Congress, and the courts attempting to shift responsibility of proof or varying the standard of proof according to the pressures brought to bear on the issue. In general, Professor Klapp finds that when citizens or industrialists organize to protest a regulatory decision and when the legislature or the courts take scientific uncertainty into account, then the initial regulatory decision is changed. By contrast with the United States, where scientific uncertainty is used as a public resource and rationale for change, in France and Britain scientific uncertainty is treated as a private resource. French and British scientists do not treat regulatory decisions as opportunities to reveal scientific uncertainty to the public--instead, discussions of uncertainties are held behind "closed doors" and, when reports are made to the public about regulatory decisions, scientific information is presented as if it were certain. Bargaining with Uncertainty will be a provocative analysis to those scholars and researchers concerned with the making of public policy as well as those concerned with risk assessment in public health, the environment, and technology.

    What makes Calvary Chapel Distinctive?

It's always good to have a grasp of the distinctive work that God has done in our fellowship. If Calvary Chapel is exactly like the church across the street it would be better to simply merge the two. But, if there are qualities that make us different, then we have a unique and special place in the plan of God. Certainly there are churches that share many of our beliefs and practices. But God has done a wonderful work of balance in the Calvary Chapel movement that does make us different.

Some churches believe in the gifts and ministry of the Holy Spirit, but don't have a strong emphasis on Biblical teaching. Others place strong emphasis on teaching the Word of God, but don't believe the gifts of the Spirit are available and valid today.

In Calvary Chapel we value the teaching of the Word, and possess an open heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. This balance makes Calvary Chapel a distinct and uniquely blessed movement of God. And so, it's important to understand the Biblical principles that explain why God has allowed us to exist and grow.

1 out of 5 stars Overzealous and Poorly Researched .......2006-09-29

Chuck Smith was one of the first to make bold proclamations against the traditional church model by crusading for Calvary Chapel churches and Maranatha music in the early 70s. Now, about 30 years later, he decides to reveal his beliefs in his book Calvary Chapel Distinctives.

Chuck starts his book off with a bang! He says in Chapter one, in the first paragraph, "We believe that church history, for the most part, has been a sad a tragic story of failure." Hmm? I thought that Calvary Chapel believed in the canon of Scripture and some of the reformation doctrines? How can one believe that the church that established the very canon of Scripture was a faulty and tragic church yet still hold to that canon? In the next page Chuck says, "So you can't look at church history and find the model for the church..." The rest of his book is based on this supposed fact and Chuck's call to rescue the church through his new doctrine and philosophy of ministry.

The second chapter speaks about church government, but in a very straw man fashion. He says that the church of Acts is the model but he completely throws out the Presbyterian model by stating that Presbyterians are looking for a "hireling," and that "the pastor can be fired by these people" Well, he is nearly slandering here because I know for a fact that it takes much more than a search committee to fire a Presbyterian pastor. Chuck then says, "woe to the man who pastors a congregational church...[the pastor] is hired by the congregation rather than ordained by the Lord." And he says, "everyone should be a deacon." He then goes on to say that the church should be modeled after Moses and is more of a "theocracy." Wow! This is dangerous to believe.

Chuck, whom is clearly not educated on the subjects addressed, fills the whole book with inflammatory comments. On page 53 he says, "when a person gets heavy into `Reformation Theology,' they usually get heavy into legalism." He is in serious error here! Legalism can be found anywhere but history has shown that the Reformed camp, if anything, has moved more towards liberalism: the complete opposite of "legalism."

Chuck commits a whole chapter on "The Rapture of the Church," (of course) and goes as far as saying, " I believe that God wanted every church age to believe that it was the last." Why would God will that people believe in something that is not true? I'm sure this is coercion for people not to accuse him of being a false prophet for his statements about the Lord coming back in the 80s (true story).

One last comment from Calvary Chapel Distinctives: "The minute you set your position one way or the other [referring to doctrine], you've lost half of your congregation. Why would you want to lose half your congregation?" Chuck also condemns seminaries and degrees by making them out to be an ungodly pursuit of worldliness.

Chuck's frustrations do come from an awareness of serious problems within the Protestant church. Many of us are grieved by the ungodly pursuits for intellectualism and "high-culture-only leaders," within the ministry. And yes, many have become dogmatic in non-essential doctrines, which in turn have caused division. But Chuck is simply not studied enough to conquer these problems. And he is also dogmatic in non-essentials himself. Just look at his chapter on the rapture. Or, simply look at the whole book, an entire dogmatic assertion in itself, based on false assumptions for the exaltation of Calvary Chapel.

Yes, again, the traditional church has issues, but this is not the way to deal with them: on a straw man, and slanderous way with no reference at all to the traditional bad guys.

I'm sure Chuck Smith is a polite and sincere fellow with much passion, but this book with his entire rebuke is in dire need of admonishment and correction.

3 out of 5 stars Some of what Calvary believes.......2006-09-21

Fine book but doesn't accurately portray the depth of Chuck Smith's ultra fundamentalist preoccupation and focus on the end times. Additionally, if you are confused by the "From the gutter-most to the utter-most" review it is because it is not about this book - it is about Harvest, co-authored by Chuck Smith and Tal Brooke. Come on, reviewers, at least read the book!

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Model.......2005-05-23

The first time I was exposed to Calvary Chapel was back in 1977. I was invited to what is now called Harvest Christian Fellowship and the teaching ministry of Greg Laurie.

Coming from a 'fundamentalist, independent, Baptist' church, you could probably imagine my 'shock and horror' to see the guys and gals greeting each other with hugs of affection, progressive worship music, relaxed dress code, people laughing and carrying on, having a good time, etc. - buncha hippies :-)!

But then Greg, with his long hair and all (cue the spoof song 'Hairology' from 'The Fundamentalist Hour'), opened the Word and taught it simply yet powerfully.

My confusion only escalated during the 'Harvest Crusades' where hundreds of people would go forward proclaiming Christ as Lord and Savior - how could God 'bless' all these hippies and their unbiblical doctrines and practices (at least the way I saw scripture)? Drove me nuts!

Fastforward to 2002 - for the last 2.5 yrs, I've been attending a Calvary Chapel. It is exactly what my wife and I needed - she cried after the first sermon - she was introduced to a Jesus she always wanted to meet. More than anything, my personal philosophy of ministry was confirmed by the precious folks at Calvary Chapel.

Pastor Smith has written and synopsized Calvary Chapel's distinctives in a clear and forthright manner, leaving no doubt as to where Calvary Chapel stands on numerous issues. It becomes a framework for all future CC pastors.

Pastor Smith has through the years cultivated a unique relationship with his 'sons in the Lord' to love the Lord and teach the Word very effectively. You may or may not agree with all that Calvary Chapel holds to in this book, but to employ the principles in this book for 'doing church' will go along way in getting your church off on the right foot.

I heartily recommend this book to folks from all doctrinal persuasions as an excellent guide on where and how Calvary Chapel stands and worships Jesus.

    5 out of 5 stars It's the Insider's Scoop.......2001-06-05

This book presents the view points of church management of one of the most successful churches in the states today. It touches some controversial aspects like Calvinism vs. Aminianism, Pentecost view vs. Baptist view of the Holy Spirit, etc., and shows the balanced ground that Calvary Chapel is taking on these issues. It also illustrates by examples the point that, throughout the church history, many movements were born of the spirit but attempted to be perfected in flesh and ended up dying. It contains a lot of godly counsel and scriptural quotes, yet without an attempt to convince people for argument's sake. Finally, this book is another exmaple of pastor Chuck Smith's casual and personal communication style.

5 out of 5 stars From the gutter-most to the utter-most.......1997-10-03

This book is for those that are seeking truth to their existence. Chuck Smith and Tal Brooke detail the lives and life changing stories of how rebels and outcasts, outlaws and villians, drug addicts and the general scum of the earth came to know the only true God, Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. You will rejoice in their victory over the deathly grip of this world. You will glory in the knowledge that you too can have the same abundant life in Christ that they lead today.

5 out of 5 stars Agnes Pflumm and the Stonecreek Science Fair.......2001-12-14

I love this book! I bought it at an NSTA convention five years from the author and have used it every year since. The story is entertaining, but at the same time teaches my 5th graders about choosing a science fair topic, completing research, presenting to judges, and designing controlled experiments. I have developed activities and discussions from the suggested lesson plans in the back of the book. The most valuable part of this book is the idea that students should choose a topic about which they have a real interest. Since I began using this book, my students' projects have shown more creativity and thoroughness, and a higher level of quality than in years past.

After 10 years of teaching science and looking for a tie to reading/lang. arts, I have found the best book imaginable. Agnes Pflumm is hired by Stonecreek Middle School at the last minute to take over and prepare 25 sixth graders for their first science fair. She does so with flare, as does the author Merrie Koester Southgate. I saw this book at the CAST (Science Teachers Convention. Unfortunately our librarian was not able to get us the book in time to help this years students, but we are going to read it as a culminating event. I know next years 5th graders will truly "get" Science Fair after reading this book.

This book was great! She stows away on the Mayflower and is an outcast who becomes loved. But Merrie has to face tragedies like sickness and she is sentenced to leave. Then becomes blood sisters with an Indian. But will she go back to London or stay where she is not wanted?

5 out of 5 stars The Sunfire Stow-Away!.......1999-02-11

Merrie is a well-off English girl, cir. 1620. Yet she craves adventure (and what good Sunfire heroine DOESN'T??), and stows away aboard a little ship known as the Mayflower! Not only must Merrie choose her men but her continents! And of course Merrie clashes with those somber Pilgrims, makes friends with the Indians, etc. Also, this story has one of the most touching scenes of the series when Merrie must make her choice between the guys... Great stuff...

        5 out of 5 stars Cool book!.......1998-02-23

Merrie doesn't want an arranged marriage, so she runs away from her home and stows away on the Mayflower. Several days into the voyage she is found though. It is too late to turn back so they let her stay. Then she falls in love with a Pilgrim. Does he love her too though?
