Who's in a Family?
ASIN: 0316738964 |
Book Description
There are so many different types of families, and THE FAMILY BOOK celebrates them all in a funny, silly, and reassuring way. Parr includes adopted families, step-families, one-parent families, and families with two parents of the same sex, as well as the traditional nuclear family. His quirky humor and bright, childlike illustrations will make children feel good about their families. Parents and teachers can use this book to encourage children to talk about their families and the different kinds of families that exist.
Customer Reviews:
everyone's family book.......2007-10-15
What I love about this book is that it covers just about every type of family and family life out there, explains it simply and matter of factly for young kids in a colorful and supportive way. It points out our differences and at the same time the similarities. For example, it says some families have two dads, some have two moms, some have one parent, some have two parents, but all families love to hug each other (I'm paraphrasing but you get the idea).
The drawings are very basic, (like on the front cover) but all very colorful and my little one loves to point out all the colors and animals (as Todd Parr uses people as well as animals to demonstrate the differences and similarites in families). Technically it is called an ages 4-8 book but my two year old has enjoyed it for the past year so don't be too concerned about the ages. The print is large enough (and also colorful enough) to get the attention of the younger children as well and my daughter loves to trace her finger under the words as we read it.
My Daughter's FAVORITE book!.......2007-09-23
My daughter has loved this book since the moment I first read it to her at 9 months. She is now 3 and will say, "I tore that when I was a tiny baby." The book is literally held together with packing tape. I have NEVER seen a child love a book as much as this one, and it's not just her, every child that reads this book loves it. I too am an adoptive single mom which is why I initially purchased this book, but every page represents a family we know and love.
My sister recently shared it with her Masters class (she's a teacher) when they were discussing diversity. It sparked magic with the other teachers who are now sharing our taped together book in their classrooms and having their student's draw pictures of their own families. What better way to garner acceptance!
This is by far the most read and loved book on our book case.
Helpful book.......2007-08-31
This is a great book for the adopted daughter of a single mother. She likes it because of all of the colors and different animals/people there but I like it for the message. My almost 3 yr old has been asking where is her daddy and I bring out the book and say, "We don't have a daddy, see, just like that family." I know this won't work forever, but it really helps to show her we are a family just like everyone else!!
Great Book For Those of Us in "Different" Families.......2007-07-20
I bought this book because I'm a single adoptive Mom and my toddler had started asking me about "Daddy." I wasn't sure how to answer him. This book has been a God-send. Through it, I've been able to explain to my son that there are some families with two Mommies or two Daddies, some with one Mommy and one Daddy, and some with just a Mommy or just a Daddy. The illustrations are colorful and simple. The text is also simple, but the message is important -- no matter what kind of family you have, all families love each other and all families are special.
"Adoption-friendly".......2007-07-02
The combination of Todd Parr's brightly colored bold-line illustrations and his underlying message of respect and inclusion make this a fantastic book for our modern kids.
"The Family Book" is not a book about adoption, but one I consider adoption-friendly. Using simple language, it describes many possible ways to be a family. Interracial, single-parent, step-parent, adoptive, and same-sex parent families are all represented, along with more basic descriptors ("Some families like to be quiet. Some families like to be noisy."). Interspersed throughout are reminders that there are certain things which describe all families ("They are sad when they lose someone they love").
Children will find many different pages which apply to their own family. Regardless of what political/social/religious/moral debates adults want to have about various family structures, all children deserve to have their unique family life validated and respected. This book does a wonderful job of doing just that
Customer Reviews:
WOW. Loved this book........2007-07-01
This book is one of my favorites. There are many shocking tales of excess (he is right up there with today's rock stars). I enjoyed hearing the stories behind the songs I love and insights to the other band member's personalities. They are all opinions of Brian, mind you. It is also interesting to read Brian's take of the "brainwasher", Eugene Landy.
This is a great book.
incredible book.......2005-09-30
i'm not the biggest beach boys fan ever or anything, but this book is totally awesome!! sex, drugs, destruction, abuse, infidelity, insanity, revenge, back-stabbing, suicide... you'd look for this in your favorite heavy metal band's book, right? WRONG!!! this beats them all! this book has so much dysfunction, you won't even believe it until you read it. it's like the best drama ever. and it's all straight from brian wilson's mouth, so you know it's true. some people have said this book glorifies dr. landy too much. well, i disagree. i believe what brian says about him. brian is sane, intelligent and insightful now. aside from all the incredible amounts of dysfunction and despair though, you get to see brian climb out of it and become sane and happy again. this book is so amazing, i've read it over and over. i wish i could erase it from my memory and read it again for the first time! IT'S THAT GOOD. just get it!! even if you don't like the beach boys, i think you could appreciate this book, because it's all about real life.
First read "Heroes and Villians," then Brian's story.......2004-07-23
I really enjoyed this book, "Wouldn't It Be Nice," especially after reading "Heroes and Villians." Trust me, it really makes it interesting to read the two in that order, because first you hear one version in "Heroes and Villians" you read story after story about this mysterious reclusive character Brian Wilson, you hear other people's views and versions of what happened...THEN you pick up "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and read SOME of the same stories BUT MUCH MORE, through
Brian's eyes! It is absolutely SPELLBINDING!
Dr. Landy was called a 'Svengali' by some of those members
of the Beach Boys and characterized as a villian...The man GOT RESULTS...On the other hand, the Beach Boys suffered much by Brian's refusal to tour and subsequent drug addiction, but they tried clumsy, stupid, abusive methods to try to force him to come back...They just didn't understand that they were dealing with a severely damaged paranoid schizophrenic...
As a recovering alcoholic myself (12 years sober) I am especially impressed with the ingenious ways Dr. Landy lured Brian out of bed, out of isolation, and helped him rejoin the human race! And THAT was just the beginning...These stories Brian tells are UNFORGETTABLE...Read the account about where Brian learns to take a shower again, after being so delusional that he actually believed snakes, bullets, fire, etc. would come out of the shower head...That sort of thing is COMMON AMONG DELUSIONAL PEOPLE! You can't beat somebody into submission in order to cure a schizophrenic, that just doesn't work, but that's exactly what the Beach Boys attempted to do with their "bodyguards"...If you wanna talk about "controversial," don't criticize Dr. Landy's methods, consider this:
(p. 369)
"Then Mike (Love) sauntered up in white pants and a flowered print shirt. He stood inches from me (Brian), knowing that the closer he got the more frightened I became that he'd throw a punch or try to hurt me in some way.
I understood that Mike enjoyed being a physical threat.
"Hi Brian," he said in his smarmy, whisperlike voice.
"Hello Mike," I replied.
He looked me up and down slowly, sizing me up in a creepy, condescending manner. He fixated on my shoes--stodgy, conservative black lace-ups.
"Those are the most hideous shoes I've ever seen," he said, flashing an evil grin."
Why doesn't anybody talk about Mike "Love's" methods being "controversial," why is that word used against the man who brought Brian back from near death? Money, that's why. That's all these people care about. Money-money-money...
I plan to read this book AGAIN...It's SO GOOD...In Gaines' book one gets the impression that Dr. Landy took advantage of Brian and helped himself to the family's riches...HOWEVER, we get quite a different impression from Brian's story...Yes, Brian paid Dr. Landy a lot of money...but it was his money, wasn't it? Or was it the Beach Boys' money? Would they have preferred to have Brian continue to destroy himself, have a funeral and keep their precious money? Sure looks like it.
I have some wonderful childhood memories of the Beach Boys' music - The first album I ever bought was "The Beach Boys Today," $3.79 in stereo, $2.79 in mono back then! I no longer have the album, or most of my others...Today there are some wonderful CDs available on Amazon from that time period...
Brian's account of Beatle Paul McCartney's visit just before the release of the memorable "Sgt. Pepper" album made such an impression on me I copied down most of the two-page story and emailed it to friends and family...what a great story! How come Gaines didn't mention it? Well, look at the copyrights: "Heroes and
Villians" came out in 1986, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" says 1991.
Maybe he didn't know? Hmmm... Naaahh!! Well...???
Gaines book says that Paul tried to visit Brian, Brian was scared and locked the door and cried while Paul knocked for twenty minutes...Brian doesn't mention that, was it a different occasion, or did it happen at all? If not, who made it up?
I highly recommend these two books, especially to those who grew up in the 1960s. Great stuff! And Brian - there are a lot of people out here who still love your music and it was a real pleasure reading your story. Thanks for both!
Good (and bad) Vibrations.......2003-12-03
I found this an engrossing read. There was a lot to take in. Brian's father put him through a lot of hell, and when Brian finnally found something that made him happy, Captiol records nearly overworked him to death. I really liked reading about his encounters with other famous rock legends. Brian wasn't just intimidated by the Beatles. He was equally scared of the Rolling Stones. (He attenended some of the "Between the Buttons" sessions.) There's a lot of heart breaking stories. A story that kind of upset me was when he talks about the "Beach Boys Love You" album. Brian never really meant for the material to be heard. It was part of his therapy and he felt embarrased by the songs. After reading this book, I think Dr. Landy was benneficial to Brian in some ways. He made him much more healthy and got him back into making muisc. The only problem was he then went on to exploit his position. Someone should have stepped in in '85 when Landy ceased to be a therapist/ pshyciatrist and became a Sven Gali. With all that's happend to Brian since I hope we one day say a revised update. Other reviewers have talked about how Brian bad mouths his brothers in this book. I recommend people check out an interview/piece Rolling Stone did on Brian in 2000. It serves as a kind of sequel to this book. In the interview, Brian has much kinder words towards his brothers, particuarly Carl.
A rarity--an interesting book on a rock star.......2002-09-22
I assumed this book would be as uninteresting as the other rock star biographies and autobiographies that I've read; nothing could be further from the truth. While most musicians are working their careers, falling in and out of love, and meeting famous people, which might be interesting to live but not to read about, Brian Wilson was going mad as a hatter and then coming back--the man has things to write about. The book seems to be written very honestly, and it has the ring of truth throughout. As for the material on Eugene Landy, Brian Wilson still says positive things about him, and apparently still holds the view of Landy presented here. The book provides basically zero insight into Brian Wilson's ways of working--it's a book about his life, not his music. You get a detailed picture of what his decline was all about, very clear characterizations of Murry Wilson and the Beach Boys, and what seems to be an extremely honest self-portrait of Brian Wilson, hardly a weakness left unexposed. I'm not THAT huge a fan, actually, but I've always been curious about Brian Wilson's much-ballyhooed problems--I found the book fascinating, and I'd recommend the book even if just to satisfy your idle curiosity. If you are a fan, I'd suggest that this is a book you really have to read.

For anyone who ever doubted it, Todd Parr is here to tell us all that it's okay to be different. With his signature artistic style, featuring brightly colored, childlike figures outlined in heavy black, Parr shows readers over and over that just about anything goes. From the sensitive ("It's okay to be adopted"--the accompanying illustration shows a kangaroo with a puppy in her pouch) to the downright silly ("It's okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub"), kids of every shape, size, color, family makeup, and background will feel included in this gentle, witty book. In this simple, playful celebration of diversity, Parr doesn't need to hammer readers over the head with his message.

if you want to have an open mind.......2007-09-25
Do buy this book if you want your childrn to love the people around them and to accept them with their differences
Great for first day of school.......2007-08-07
I am a primary grade teacher and I use this book in the first week to expose my kids to the different people they'll encounter at school and in life. It's a great way to get them comfortable with their surrounding community members, as well as feeling good about themselves as citizens in the global community. They each draw their own "It's okay to..." picture and we hang it up for all to see. At home, I read it aloud to my daughter, and although she is just five months old, it will expose her to the idea that "different" is wonderful and what makes people unique. My nieces and nephews have done the picture activity and it still hangs in their rooms.
It's okay to be different is excellent!.......2007-04-02
We originally got this book from the library. My son has some speech issues, but let me tell you, this book he knows by heart. He can't read yet, as he is only four, but he knows all the words. He feels good because not all the people in the book are perfect. Everyone is special. And the bright colors make the book so fun to read.
Great Book!.......2007-03-13
Finally a good kids book that celebrates our differences! Very beautifully animated as well as a great story line. I'd highly recommend this to families wanting to encourage and celebrate our world's diversity.
A hit.......2007-01-20
It's a good lesson for kids to learn presented in colorful illustrations that catch their eye. I've bought three or four Todd Parr books for my grandkids and they love all of them, including this one.

Labels may not be helpful for young children.......2004-05-28
I love Todd Parr's animated illustrations and charm. But after purchasing this book and reading it to my 2-year old, I wasn't as excited about this particular book. The labels "good" and "bad" are used in a way that it introduces ideas into a young child's mind. Like some of the examples were "good:light", "bad: the dark". I am trying to teach my daughter NOT to think of the dark as something bad and not to be afraid of! So that's not too helpful. Also, it has "monsters: bad" as well as "big hairy spiders: bad". We're trying to convince my daughter that monsters don't exist, not that they are "bad" and make her scared even more. The other labels in the book are funny, like "smelly feet: bad" and "hot chocolate with marshmallows: good".
I know Todd Parr just wanted to write a funny book for kids. But if your children are at the stage where they are scared of things or take things very literally, then you might want to choose a different book!
Good Book.......2002-11-24
I am a teacher and I love these books. Todd Parr has outdone himself yet again in writing this book. I am sure that it will be a hit with my class of first graders.
New fun, funky emergent reader series.......2000-04-04
I love the Todd Paar books! Neon-y colors and goofy, childlike art make these very simple books stand out from the crowd. Things that make you feel good include bubble baths, pets, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and bedtime stories. Things that make you feel bad include smelly feet, stinkbugs, worm stew, and monsters. The combination of things that are real and things that are silly will make you laugh and maybe take life a little less seriously. If you're a kid, there's an important self-esteem message in these books that the littlest kid can relate to.

A world they never imagined........2007-09-07
Todd Mitchell's THE TRAITOR KING tells of Darren and Jackie, who have always known their family was strange - but not by how much. A fantasy mystery revolves around the family and once they discover some of the secrets, a vanished uncle's plight draws them into a world they never imagined.
Fantastic Book -best thing I've read in a long time.......2007-08-31
To be honest, I picked up this book because I liked the cover. When I read it, I was expecting a fun read. And the book is fun --great characters, adventure, mystery and imagination. But what surprised me is how much I kept thinking about the book afterwards. There's far more going on beneath the surface of this book than one might expect of YA fantasy. Some heavy issues are dealt with in a new way. I've since spoken with ten year olds who love this book, teachers who discuss it in their classes, and family therapists who have their clients read it. All I can say is check it out --I haven't read a book this good in a long time. And I envy you for getting to experience The Traitor King for the first time.
Excellent fantasy book (and I usually hate fantasy).......2007-08-02
I absolutely loved this book. Everybody I know who has read it says they finished it in one night, and I did the same. Mitchell immediately drew me into his story with his quirky, dynamic characters and his page-turning plot. Darren and Jackie are completely intriguing, and while their adventure ventures into fantasy, their struggles are grounded in reality. Mitchell does a fine job of portraying complicated family dynamics - highlighting the ways in which we all struggle against our heritage and they ways in which we also long to embrace it. Anybody who has ever wondered about the mysteries of their family or their past will love this story.
A compelling mystery and fascinating family dynamics.......2007-06-05
Eleven-year-old Darren Mananann is pretty sure he knows exactly what to expect for his two-week summer vacation at Uncle Will's run-down house in Maine. There will be lots of card games and cocktails for the adults, and no TV or Internet for the kids. Plus he'll have his annoying cousin, Kini, to deal with.
At least his eccentric uncle will have set up this year's scavenger hunt, a truly challenging annual event that usually keeps Darren and his older sister Jackie occupied for several days. Darren is especially anticipating the hunt, hoping it will keep his mind off of the disturbing dreams he's been having.
But when Darren, Jackie, their parents and other relatives arrive at Uncle Will's dilapidated home, Will is not even there. All they have is a note that reads "Stepped out for a bit...some things came up" and advice about watering the plants and returning books to the library. Darren's mother is convinced that Uncle Will has finally lost his mind, seizing the opportunity to do some long-overdue housecleaning.
Soon, though, Darren and Jackie are convinced that Uncle Will still wants them to carry on with the annual scavenger hunt --- and that his cryptic note is actually the first clue. Sure enough, the siblings are soon involved in the most exciting hunt of all, one that will lead them deep into their family history and even bring them into close contact with the scary figures from Darren's nightmares.
As they follow Uncle Will's clues, Darren and Jackie begin to suspect that their unusual family might be even more extraordinary than they had imagined. They all seem to have second sight, or "shadow sight," a very useful thing for playing poker, as it turns out. Do Darren and Jackie also have the shadow sight? Why is their family name in the big book of Celtic mythology at the library? Is the librarian more than what she seems? Why has Uncle Will's research into the family story been burned? And who is the skeletal man who shadows their every move? Seeking the answers to these questions leads the siblings far into Celtic mythology, all the way to the mythical land of Tir Na N'Og.
THE TRAITOR KING is Todd Mitchell's first novel, and it clearly owes a great debt to some classics of children's literature, including Elizabeth's Enright's SPIDERWEB FOR TWO and Susan Cooper's OVER SEA, UNDER STONE. But that's not to say that Mitchell's book is derivative --- it integrates Celtic mythology well and also includes plenty of original plot ideas. The most appealing parts of the novel are in its first half, as Darren and Jackie work to navigate their uncle's clues and their new knowledge about the Mananann family. These sections include realistic, concrete imagery as well as a compelling mystery and fascinating family dynamics.
The portions of the book set in Tir Na N'Og are less robust and vivid, at least until the final confrontation that pits Darren against supernatural elements and even against the decisions of some of his own family. Mitchell leaves the ending wide open for a sequel in what he's calling The Broken World series. Readers will be eager to see how Mitchell continues to develop his mythology, and his most unusual family, in future installments.

Get in on Christy’s Senior Year
The last three books, collected in one page-turning volume, conclude the bestselling Christy Miller series with hope and promise! At the start of her senior year, Christy looks forward to growing closer to Todd, but her friendship with Katie is on the rocks, threatening the year she was certain would be a time to cherish. With Sweet Dreams comes the start of a romantic summer. She’d be entirely swept off her feet if it wasn’t for the most difficult decision she’s ever had to make. And in A Promise Is Forever, Christy discovers foreign adventure is just her cup of tea. Follow Christy Miller as she stays true to her identity in Christ, drawing closer to God for help in realizing her dreams and dealing with her disappointments.
Whether you’re meeting her for the first time or have known her for years—
Christy Is a Forever Friend
A Time to Cherish
For Labor Day weekend, Christy Miller is on a houseboat at Lake Shasta. What could be better? She’s about to find out! Before they know it, both Christy and her best friend, Katie, are receiving some unexpected male attention. But somehow these best friends are at odds just when they should be having the most fun together. Christy soon realizes that sometimes you have to stand back and let people make their own decisions, even when they’re headed for a fall. And although life is never perfect, this is definitely a time to cherish.
Sweet Dreams
Christy Miller’s senior year is delicious, especially the time she spends with Todd. But her best friend, Katie, is struggling—she’s realized she needs to break up with Michael. It’s not easy! Fortunately both Doug and Disneyland help Katie to cheer up. Christy is learning to let go and get out of the way so that her friends can become who they’re meant to be...even when it jeopardizes her own sweet dreams.
A Promise Is Forever
Christy Miller’s going to Europe! It’s a three-week missions trip with Doug, Katie, and Tracy. First stop: London for some sightseeing, and then a castle in the English countryside for group training. Christy is so excited to be headed for Belfast with her friends—despite some tension among them. But when plans go topsy-turvy at the last minute, Christy must face her fears and realize that some things are more important than her own comfort...and that even when she can’t foresee the end result, a promise truly is forever.
Story Behind the Book
“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise . I love that!” —Robin Jones Gunn

My 19 year old daughter loves these series. She's been reading them since she was 10 years old and still thoroughly enjoys them.
The Christy Miller novel that fans have been waiting for.......2007-06-27
Christy Miller has been waiting years for longtime love interest Todd to make a commitment. In A TIME TO CHERISH, the 10th installment in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, Christy and her friends set off on a summer adventure onboard a houseboat, which just might help the on-again off-again couple take the next step in their relationship.
Sure enough, the romantic scenery and lots of pushing from Christy's overbearing Aunt Marti do the trick, and Christy and Todd finally declare themselves a couple. Naturally, Christy could not be more excited. As she revels in the joy of being able to call Todd her boyfriend, plans for the future go into overdrive. While Aunt Marti begins thinking ahead to college degrees and their wedding, Christy attempts to simply slow down and enjoy the moment.
However, even this proves to be tough, as best friends Katie and Doug do not necessarily share in her enthusiasm. Doug has had a crush on Christy for years, so her relationship with Todd has put an end to his hopes. And while Katie is happy for the new couple, it only reminds her that she is still missing a significant other in her life. Determined for Katie to be just as happy as she is, Christy begins a series of disastrous attempts to set her up with Doug.
As it turns out, though, Katie might not need Christy's help at all. When they return to school for their senior year, Katie immediately becomes infatuated with an intriguing exchange student from Europe, and he is certainly returning her attention. Christy tries to warn Katie that the relationship might be dangerous, but Katie refuses to listen to her and their friendship reaches a breaking point. Is Christy just jealous, or is Katie really heading for trouble?
A TIME TO CHERISH is the Christy Miller novel that fans have been waiting for. After nine books filled with "will they or won't they" drama, Christy and Todd finally decide to make it official and begin dating. Avid readers of the series no doubt will be relieved to see the long, drawn-out drama come to an end. The book also manages to deal with complicated relationships between family, friends and significant others in a realistic and positive way. At the same time, Gunn leaves A TIME TO CHERISH with an open ending that certainly will have readers eager for more adventures with Christy Miller.

Best volume yet!.......2007-03-28
This is my favorite volume of the young Christy Miller books. I cried over the last two so much. I love when Christy and Todd are together, they're so perfect for each other! I've read all of the Christy books, and all of them made me want a hero like Todd.
Incredible!.......2007-03-25
No two ways about it, I love these books, and having a three-in-one version makes it all the better. This book contains the concluding volumes in the Christy Miller series, and it's interesting to see how she's progressed from Summer Promise.
In a Time to Cherish, Christy's relationship with Todd couldn't be better as they offically define that they're boyfriend-girlfriend. However, Christy's relationship with her best friend, Katie, on the the other hand, isn't going so well when Katie, desperate for a boyfriend and feeling left out, begins dating Michael, a non-Christian. This story was enthralling, and included some very sweet moments between Christy and Todd. It really inspired me to 'hold out for that hero.'
In Sweet Dreams, after Katie's painful break-up with Michael comes slow healing, and Christy's beginning to think that everything is good again. However, she has no idea that she'll soon be faced with one of the hardest decisions she's ever had to face. I cried at the ending of this book, yet it hit me hard, making me wonder if I could make the same sacrifice as Christy did.
A Promise is Forever would have to be one of my favorite books in the whole series. A large period of time has elapsed since Sweet Dreams, and we find Christy traveling to England for a mission's trip with Doug who's her new boyfriend, Tracy, and Katie. She expects the trip to be a good way to serve God, but she doesn't anticipate any of the speed bumps along the way, such as conlict in her group and trouble with Doug, but most of all, being sent to Spain to serve, away from the rest of her friends. This book will have you in tears at it's touching ending. A fun thing was that we're introduced to Sierra Jensen, Robin Jones Gunn's next book series. Having read the Sierra Jensen books already, it was interesting to see Sierra from Christy's point of view.
Check these books out!

I love this series. Robin Jones Gunn fills each book with drama, adventure, romance, and mystery. Every time I get one of Gunn's books, I can't put it down. I would definitely reccomend this book and all her other books to any teen girl.

"Sacred duty, yadda yadda."
-- Buffy Summers
Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always held an irreverent attitude toward her calling, but ultimately she understands the ramifications of her destiny and is prepared to die to protect the world from Evil. In fact, she has died. Twice.
"I remember the drill. One Slayer dies, another is called."
-- Buffy Summers
It's an ancient tradition, steeped in lore, mythology, and fateful prophecies. Slayerdom consists of a Council of Watchers, a continuum of slayers, an archive of journals, and even a handbook.
"Handbook? What handbook? How come I didn't have a handbook?"
-- Buffy Summers
But first and foremost, it begins with a girl. One girl in all the world. A Chosen One. Now, catch up on other Slayers past and present, in the second short-story collection, Tales of the Slayer, Vol. 2!
"[Another] Slayer? I knew this, 'I'm the only one, I'm the only one,' thing was just an attention getter."
-- Xander Harris
With contributions from Scott Allie, Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz, Max Allan Collins and Matthew V. Clemens, Greg Cox, Kara Dalkey, Jane Espenson, Rebecca Rand Kirshner, Todd McIntosh, Michael Reaves, and Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

Super Reader.......2007-08-02
An improvement on the last book, this set of stories is bookended by two Buffy tales. Here we have a pirate slayer, a samurai slayer, a slayer that encounters both Springheeled Jack and Dracula, and works with a group of friends.
A little bit more of the fun here, as some of the slayers are more successful, especially one that is a union soldier with the support of a general and his armaments.

Another good book.......2004-09-03
This is the type of book I get a little sad when I get near the end. Must read!
1 of the best Buffy books.......2003-12-12
This is 1 of my favorite books ever, 1 f my favorite story lines was Blood and Brine I loved the pirate slayer. My favorite story in this book was the last 1 where Buffy, Willow, and Xander go back in time I loved the fact that Buffy got to see her mom again and that she wasn't stuck with Dawn for once. I think that when the show brought Dawn on the show and killed Buffy's mom is when they ruint Buffy, from the 5th season on the show slowly went downhill. I HIGHLY recommend this book it is definitely the best Buffy book in the series.
I loved this Book.................2003-09-08
I've always love BTVS because of the Mythology of the Slayer line and how she's Chosen and all of that, I also love the characters and how they're written so well.....But i've often wondered about Past Slayers, what they were like, and what their life was like because as we've always known, Buffy is just one of many Slayers throughout the Years. I loved this Book and how it told about Different Slayers from Different Era's and how that particular Era effected their Duty as the Slayer.
I've seen other Reviews where people ask what good a 'Pirate' Slayer would be and if you really think about it, all of the Vampires that Migrate from country too country more than likely use Ships too Travel in because of the Dark Rooms beneath the Surface, she could stop that from happening.
My Favorite story in this book was probably "Stake out on Rush Street", among a few other's....I also liked the one about the Civil War Slayer and the one about the Slayer who fought Dracula........
I thought it was a very good book and I recommend it to other fans of Buffy and especially Fans of the Buffy Books.
Not as good as the first.......2003-06-25
It felt like it took me forever to finish this book. The stories were not as well written as the first book and it wasn't as interesting. The only highslight stories were Again written by Jane Espenson and Abonmination by Laura J. Burns and Melinda Mertz.
Book Description
Straightforward and simple, this story tells how one child found the courage to tell a teacher about Ray, who was being picked on and bullied by other kids in school. Faced with the fact that "nobody knows what to do" while Ray is bullied, the children sympathetic to him feel fear and confusion and can only hope that Ray will "fit in some day." Finally, after Ray misses a day of school and the bullies plot mean acts for his return, our narrator goes to a teacher. The children then invite Ray to play with them, and, with adult help, together they stand up to the bullies.

Great and Important Story.......2004-04-25
This is a great lesson and beautifully written. Children of today need to know there is a difference in helping each other, when reporting or being afraid comes to mind. The lesson is clear in this book.
Important For All To Read.......2004-02-07
This book is very important for all to read. It holds the key to teaching children and adults the difference in telling on someone or actually reporting a problem. It is easy reading with full meaning and will be meaningful no matter what the decade or school or premise. It should be circulated to immediate attention in all school libraries especially.
For All Ages -.......2002-01-18
This book is rated among the timeless and yet it is VERY TIMELY for this period of our lives. It is not only interesting, but it guides 'anyone' to understanding the difference in "telling" and in "reporting something to prevent harm". The author is at the top of the list for the very best of authors in Childrens' Books!
Wonderful.......2001-06-16
This book is literally "timeless" for all ages, especially for adults as well as children. It should be placed in school and church libraries, and discussed over and over again for making certain understanding is there. The Publishers should keep this book out front for many, many years.
Oustanding resource!.......2001-06-07
This book and Eleanor Estes' book The Hundred Dresses are the only two childrens' books about bullying that I recommend. This book presents clear, effective ideas about how bystanders and teachers can work together to make a difference in stopping school bullying.

Although some mommies drive motorcycles, and others drive minivans; some mommies go fishing while others go shopping, all mommies want their children to be who they are. That's Todd Parr's story, and he's sticking with it (as reinforced by his It's Okay to Be Different, This Is My Hair, and lots more funky, friendly picture books). Using his trademark style of brightly colored stick figures, with bold outlined smiley faces for heads, Parr portrays a world of diversity and peace in his simple, esteem-boosting titles. Moms are celebrated here (naturally, you'll find dads in The Daddy Book), in all their traditional, eccentric, athletic, hip, nurturing glory. Each spread shows moms doing their thing: dancing moms opposite swimming moms, short-hair moms next to big-hair moms, and work-at-home moms across from work-in-big-buildings moms. The refrain is that all moms love their kids: "All mommies like to hang out with you!" "All mommies like to watch you sleep!" The Mommy Book is reassuring and fun. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
