Reflections on a Journey: The Collective Works of a Poet Storyteller

That statement above is the title I gave the second chapter of my first book Reflections on a Journey, the collective works of a poet storyteller. It features those thoughts I put to writing regarding my struggles with ADHD, the medical condition I've lived with since I was a kid. The more I read of The Da Vinci Method the more I was reminded of the poetry that became not just that one chapter of my book but the embodiment of the book as a whole. Because I didn't just focus, or even hyperfocus, on the ADHD issue per se but on evey aspect of my life's journey, of which ADHD has played a major part.

What can I say about the Da Vinci Method? I am blown away by everything Garret LoPorto has written from cover to cover, more to the point amazed! Because I feel like he's describing me to a T in regards to describing the Da Vinci type personality, their issues, their struggles, circumstances and conditions they're surrounded by and are drawn to. And more than that what they are capable of, and what I am capable of if I truly apply to myself the advice he's given in this book.

Before ADHD felt every bit like the disease, defect, curse and dysfunction I'd often believed it was since my diagnosis of it over 7 years ago. Now I'm convinced more than ever that that is not the case with the seeds that his book has sown in my heart and my mind. Now I'm believing and knowing for certain that the curse is not a curse at all, but the blessing in disguise it has been all along.

Initially, I had stumbled across this book about 2 - 3 weeks ago when searching online for something else that was ADHD related. But after reading the info on the book's webpage and taking the tests I was intrigued and compelled to purchase it afterward. I didn't want to wait for the book to arrive I went ahead and downloaded and started reading the e-book version of it right away. I was half way through it when the book itself arrived in the mail not even a week ago.

I don't believe finding The Da Vinci Method was a mistake. Moreso, I believe I was meant to find it so I too could do what it's title conveys - "to break out and express my fire".

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who has faced the struggles and pain that I and many ADHDers have and felt like giving up time and again due to discouragement, frustration and fear. I have a renewed vigor now and a greater faith in myself I've never quite had before. And if you don't believe me...well then you'll just have to check out my book and see for yourself. That's not just a shameless plug. My own book was 7 years in the making, due not just to the body of material it contains, but mostly to the procrastination and self doubt that got in the way of it's eventual publication. Now I can say with pride I've actually followed through and made that achievement. Though it is a compilation of all my poetry, it is my life story. And one that has often been plagued by many ADHD related challenges and disappointments, great and small. It is my heart and soul poured out on paper.

I'll not be seeing myself so much anymore as the ADHD case, but as someone who's a Da Vinci, thanks in large part to this book's helping me to see myself in a much greater light, and knowing who I am more fully.

So, if you're looking to set your soul free to realize your potential and effect change in this world for the better, then get this book, you'll be glad you did.

I know I am.

I felt like an island my whole life. I never realized how controlled my behavior was until I read this book. In the first chapter alone, I shed years worth of tears. This author understands. There is truth to his words. If you have ADD, you have a strong sixth sense. You'll get it when you read it. You'll want to throw away your drugs and celebrate the unique person that you are. If you have just been diagnosed with ADD, this is the first book you should read. If you are considering drugs to make you "normal" read this book first. It is revolutionary in scope, much more so than The Secret in my opinon. It should be pasted on billboards and talked about on Oprah until we have classes in school that cater to our type rather than drugging us into submission.

I had to come back and update my review. I recently finished reading A book called, The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People by Carol Eikleberry. It was written in 1973 and pretty much discusses The Artistic personality discussed in the Davinci Method. In it, Dr. Eikleberry also states that a surpressed Artist becomes neurotic.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening and inspiring work!.......2007-06-26

Me finding this book is about serendipity. I have recently been diagnosed as bipolar II (which I suspected I was) and I found very interesting and challenging information in this book that I could apply to my condition. It made me discover Carl Jung, Otto Rank and Julia Cameron, all authors that believe in the healing power or creativity. It's unabashedly optimistic and proud but also cautionary. I also found it inspiring and fresh. It you are looking for an alternative view on bipolar behaviour which could complement medical and educational resources that are already out there, this book will give you food for thought.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading The Da Vinci Method, interesting and informative, with some thought provoking ideas.
Highly recommend for anyone to read!

5 out of 5 stars No Wonder !.......2007-02-22

I did not suspect I was ADHD until about eight years ago. Now at age 60, this book really hits home. Very helpful. After I read it I said to myself "No Wonder. It all makes sence now". I recommend this to anyone suspecting they are ADD or ADHD rather than considering medications. I fear most medications, they have a lot of negatives and usually don't treat the problem.

Book Description

What more appealing scene can you conjure up on a wintry day than a pair of comfortable armchairs pulled up to a crackling fire while wisps of smoke curl from the chimney top? All your senses are in use--the sight of the flickering flames, the sound of the crackling logs, the warmth on your face, and the fragrance and taste of wood smoke. The hearth truly is the essential core of every home, whether it is an actual fireplace or merely a mantel displaying the treasures and trophies of intertwined lives. Long past the days of strictly utilitarian purpose, fireplaces and stoves are a design feature in their own right. They are available in an array of styles, sizes, and colors; offer a variety of fuel choices; and feature benefits beyond mere aesthetics, including heat and cooking. Fireplaces and heat sources are also widely found in many rooms throughout the house, including the family or living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, as well as outdoors. And the latest innovations in fireplace and stove technologies make having one no longer an expensive proposition.

While the building market is seeing growth in the fireplace market, so too is the remodeling marketplace. In fact, many homeowners are refacing their existing fireplace, upgrading their wood fireplace to gas, or simply installing a new faux fireplace where there wasn't one before. In this book readers will find hundreds of examples of all types of indoor fireplaces--from wood to gas, freestanding, and ventless--and stoves, both wood and pellet. In addition to gorgeous photos of a full range of fireplace styles, materials, and décor for indoor and outdoor fireplaces and stoves, solid information on practical design considerations--maintaining a fireplace or stove, remodeling an existing fireplace, safety, converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas, and the like--are explained in detail, making this the only book on the market to offer the breadth of content on both the design and practical components of all types of the latest indoor and outdoor fireplaces and stoves. Aesthetic and practical design considerations for hearths and mantels, built-ins and storage, lighting, and accessories like screen, brooms, and bellows are also covered. A thorough glossary, resources, and index provide reference-like information.

5 out of 5 stars A Design Guide and a Picture Book.......2007-02-03

Fire places seem evoke some kind of hidden memories out of our distant path when the fire at the mouth of the cave kept the tigers away. This has become so important that even apartments now seem to come with fire places.

This book, as is usual with this publisher is a beautifully illustrated, beautifully printed collection of fire places that range from a simple rock lined fire pit out in the yard to fire places that are the design center of the house, wood stoves that meet the new EPA regulations, to antiques that may have come from grandmothers house.

Besides the beautiful photography, this book also includes design tips, and the regulations that come from building codes. And there are discussions of more types of fire places than you could ever imagine without seeing it.

I got this book because my house does not have a fire place, and it's the next major extension that I plan to add. This book answered all the questions that I had, except do I want something indoor or outside. We have a long season for entertaining outside.

Book Description

Ann Covington was at the top of the world. Not only is she a prominent attorney and lesbian romance writer, but now she can even add `screenwriter' to her resume now that one of her books was going to be made into a movie.

There was a time when she would list her relationship with her partner of ten years, Kathy, as one of her many accomplishments. But even though things with Kathy have grown strained - Ann takes her commitment to Kathy seriously and assures herself that they are just going through a rough spot.

Then in walks Casey Duncan, the actress who is going to play the lead in Ann's movie. Will Casey turn Ann's world upside down?

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating read with good potential.......2007-10-17

The fact I finished reading this book says something about me and also the story. In the end it's the different twists to the story that provide its greatest strength. I am not going to recap the story line because other reviewers and the cover blurb have done that. Let me just say I found it a frustrating read because nothing seemed to be developed. There were all these intriguing scenes that just simply ended. Also, the reader is told a lot of stuff, but not shown it (in terms of story and character development). For example, I finished the book without having a sense of what the characters looked like beyond "beautiful" and wondering how Ann could have spent 10 years with Kathy and not become more alarmed by her mood swings and sought to get to its source. Also, people act in ways that there are seemingly no motivations for. The scene with Casey and the other woman came out of the blue, considering her previous devotion to Ann. I found reading the book akin to watching a movie filled with lots of scenes and quick cuts that really ramp up the manipulation of your emotions but you don't have a real sense of what's really going on. Yet, all that being said, I finished the darn thing instead of just putting it aside as I have done with many other novels. Because, in the end, the story broke out of the usual romance mode and I kept wanting to see where the author was going. But, it could have been so much more and I don't know if that is due to the publisher restricting the length and chunks of the story having to be ditched, or just poor editing and writing. I'll likely never know the answer to that but I know that this effort will make me think twice before buying another title by this author. A pity, because there was a lot of potential there.

2 out of 5 stars This book was a mess.......2007-09-17

The author really gave this book effort. And frankly, I'm impressed by anyone who can get a story on paper and published. But this book was like three books, none of which were fully developed, crammed together with none of them being developed properly. I nearly had to put it down, the poor characterizations began to distress me so much. For instance, one character makes the assertion that "kids hate her" but when she elaborates on that, apparently this is all based on a single mildly disastrous babysitting gig she had in her youth, and doesn't even take into account the current relationships she has with children which randomly (relative to the set-up the reader is given) seem to be just fine. This may seem nit-picky, epitomizes the first of many things that really interefered with my enjoyment of this novel.

For instance, following along those same lines, the characters would repeatedly make statements as fact that had no lead up, no support, and ultimately no basis in the fact of the world as the author created it. Two characters at one point have an argument where one makes a statement, the other refutes it, and the first suddenly gives in with the weak "she knew she wasn't going to win this argument" excuse. Huh? How?

But the real failing of the book was how all the great turning points, the moments when real character emotional growth and change would take place, relationships be built or severed, they were glossed over, or only referred to in the past tense after they happened. It was very seldom that the characters were mined for actual honest emotion. The first time the two main characters actually open up to each other, there isn't even any description of the emotional impact on either of them. Just straight exposition. In addition, repeatedly story elements are introduced as a character makes a statement, then it's supported after the statement by something like "Debbie had mentioned she'd taken a tour of Casey's house when she dropped off the business card of a handyman they used." Great. Fine. Why don't you *show* us more scenes, instead of referring to them in passing. And if something is important enough to use as a plot point, lay the ground work before it becomes necessary to use it.

I also can't get over how the characters enabled each other's worst behavior. I don't expect them to be perfect, but this was stretching my limits of suspended disbelief.

I don't understand how Ann later says there was just no evidence of one of the plot twists coming. I was screaming about it from the beginning of the book! Was she that blind and/or self-involved? She's supposed to be an intelligent and observant woman. And Ann jerks Casey around to an alarming degree, and is rarely called on it, or reaps consequences for it. I just could not be friends with people displaying the degree of emotional maturity shown repeatedly in this book, and not just shown, but accepted by all characters as normal.

I didn't see every twist coming, but ultimately this book glosses over all the emotional impact, even in the sex scenes. It's unconscionable that the sexiest scene is completely ill-advised.

If you want to be driven crazy by the apparently non-existent editing, a bunch of exposition but very little action, characters who say one thing but embody hypocrisy on more than one occasion, then this is the book for you. It will help you crystalize in your mind the difference between well-written and well-edited escapist fiction, and chores of reading. This book does get better at the end, when we actually get some honest emotion out of the characters, and the author had some good ideas with the plot, but the execution was poorly handled, and you have to wonder how much better the author could have done with some competent help. The "Editor:" space on the back of the title page was blank, and it sadly shows.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad little book.......2007-07-07

A good novel by Beth Moore. Could it have been better? Yes. Better editing was needed in places, and some of the character development was a bit on the weak side. I had trouble with Ann's character doing a complete 180 degree turn in how she acted toward women and sex in the last half of the book. I can't picture her character doing what she did. Casey's character was pretty well developed. And her family was awesome. Some of the plotlines were tied up too neatly (re: Ann's mother), and Moore used more exposition/description/sumarization when dialogue was needed. All in all, a decent book, and with some better editing, she'll be putting out even better stuff in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected freshness.......2007-04-24

Clearly the writers first work and although the writing is simple and at times lacking in detail the author gets a BRAVA for originality.
Just finished reading the book a few hours ago and I cannot get it off my mind. The tension between Casey and Ann is great, the supporting cast is memorable and the end has such an unexpected twist that I found myself realizing that I had forgotten to breathe. I had no idea where the writer was going to take this and that's a great thing.
I finished the book in just a few hours and went back a little later to reread the end. Ok admittedly I read some of the other parts as well.
I find it difficult to not give away what makes it so original but it is definitely worth finding out.
The story is very well and above all originally done. I hope to see more original work from Beth Moore.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Deviation From Formula.......2007-04-02

I'm always excited to see a new author published in this genre and am even more pleased when their first novel is well-written and intelligent. Such is the case with Beth Moore's `Out of the Fire.' This book brings two strong leading characters and a dimensional supporting cast together in a story that isn't just pure formula.

First there is Ann Covington, a multi-faceted woman who is working to turn her latest novel into a movie. She hires Casey Duncan, an actress with a difficult reputation, to play the lead. As expected, these women eventually fall deeply for each other. But that's where the commonness of this story ends.

Ann has a long-term relationship waiting for her at home. She takes that relationship seriously and refuses to admit or act on her feelings toward Casey. Casey, frustrated beyond belief, begins to accept her unreturned feelings. However, things begin to change when she meets Ann's partner - a woman with complex problems which are jeopardizing her seemingly-committed relationship.

It's amazing how wonderfully written this book is. The characters are mature and likable. The angst felt by both Ann and Casey is felt by the reader as well. In short, it's hard to put down this book once you start. I thoroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover.

After twenty five years in the most dangerous of all occupations, John Salka, Battalion Chief of The New York City Fire Department, offers tough and tender lessons in leadership. Salka masterfully leverages examples from fire fighting--"where lack of leadership can kill people"--to create values for leaders in every organization. He alternates vivid summaries of historic and terrifying fires (the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist factory, the 1993 World Trade Center explosion and ground zero) with metaphors from the firehouse to describe three commitments for decisive leadership. "Follow the smoke," is an imperative to uncover reality in yourself, your organization and your industry. Next, Salka counsels, "know their names before you send them into the flames," and encourages leaders to identify the contributions of each employee. The maxim, "Find your top whip" conveys ideas for developing future leaders and making a job into a classroom.

Other standout chapters focus on the nuances of building trust, clear decision-making and execution and tools for aligning individual and organization goals. Those expecting a macho approach to high-stakes leadership will be pleasantly surprised. Salka embraces intuition as "your subconscious trying to offer up a life time of experiences" and he explains how "managing emotional triggers" are ways of gaining competitive advantage. Salka's inspiring and passionate vision of leadership is a combination of reality testing, self-knowledge, and a shared mission when the heat is on. --Barbara Mackoff

Book Description

What does it take to lead people into a burning building? How do the leaders of the New York City Fire Department develop so much loyalty, trust, and grace under pressure that their subordinates will risk their very lives for them?

As a high-ranking officer of the FDNY, John Salka is an expert at both practicing and teaching high-stakes leadership. In First In, Last Out, he explains the department's unique strategies and how they can be adopted by leaders in any field—as he has taught them to organizations around the country. In a tough-talking, no-nonsense style, Salka uses real-world stories to convey leadership imperatives such as:
• first in, last out—your people need to see you taking the biggest risk, as the first one to enter the danger zone and the last to leave
• manage change—the fire you fought yesterday is not the one you'll be fighting tomorrow
• communicate aggressively—a working radio is worth more than 20,000 gallons of water
• create an execution culture—focus your people on the flames, not the smoke
• commit to reality—never allow the way you would like things to be to color how things are
• develop your people—let them feel a little heat today or they'll get burned tomorrow Illustrated by harrowing real-life situations, the principles in First In, Last Out will help managers become more confident, coherent, and commanding.

Always managing and being a firefighter in parallel never truly made me a better person. Now after having read Salka's book and truly understood my management style and applying Salka's hints, I feel I am truly a good manager. My staff has noticed the change as has my senior managers. I have passed the book along and regularly mentor my newer managers with this book. Do not pass this book up!

5 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for Front Line Managers.......2005-06-02

Salka's advice is modeled on the leadership lessons of the New York City Fire Department. He takes many of the basic principles of effective leadership that are used to define the officers of FDNY and applies it to real life situations that can be used at any level of leadership by comparing these situations to those faced by the firefighters and their daily battles.

This book's real strength comes from Salka's approach: he writes to the front line supervisor/manager, the folks who are often on the first tier of management. While many books, as good as they are, assume that the reader is in a position to affect policy and choose their entire team, "First In" speaks to managers whose responsibility is the daily performance of the staff.

In addtion to great advice that can be put to practical use by leaders at any level, Salka regails the reader with colorful stories of the men and women of the FDNY. Overall, a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all professions.......2004-12-23

As an officer in a volunteer fire department and having a real world management job, I was able to use everything this book gave me. At first, I did buy the book to be a better fire department officer but I found myself using many of the principles in everyday business life. This book is one of the easiest educational reads I've ever experienced. Hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-08-30

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) seemed a company of heroes in the months after September 11, 2001. Later, when investigations revealed the enormity of the blunders and the degree to which petty political infighting had literally doomed firefighters to death, the FDNY lost a bit of its luster. But FDNY traditionally has a core of strong leaders, and John Salka is one of them. In this book, he shares his leadership philosophy. It's no slur to observe that this is a leadership book for firehouse buffs who are as interested in firefighter yarns as in leadership. The leadership principles outlined here are sound but not new; what is fresh is that the author illustrates those principles with fire fighting stories, clearly far more interesting than war stories from accounting - even if a bit remote from most people's everyday business reality. After all, few business people risk their lives in their daily work, and probably no business has the esprit de corps of a firehouse. We recommend this book to business people across the professions. The ride inside the fire truck will keep you engrossed in its solid leadership lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Salka - "A Fire Officer Always Thinking Out of The Box".......2004-06-07

John Salka's book is an extension of his tremendous success as a fire officer. As his former Captain in FDNY on Manhattan's Lower East Side I spotted Salka as a bright, agressive, well liked Lieutenant that was always trying to make his organization better. John not only went through the ranks leading his troops honorably, he had the expertise to teach management techniques that were way ahead of his time in America's fire service. His book First in and Last Out is a tribute to this fine officers knowledge and a must read for fire service personnel or managers.

Book Description

Firefighting is a world of absolutes: evil is a red devil that wants destruction and death, good is a charged hose line, full of water to fight the flames. The best and boldest firefighters in the country, the men of Rescue 2 are hand-picked to fight not just the biggest blazes but any other emergency New York can throw at them. The sheer adrenaline of the job is perfectly captured in the dramatic story of their firehouse, a model for others nationwide-dubbed 'the cuisinart' because it slices up new recruits. The story begins in the late 1990s as Phil Ruvolo takes command from Captain Ray Downey, a legendary FDNY leader. Ruvolo inherits a stubborn group of vets, still loyal to Downey. He also steps into a firehouse mourning the recent loss of a brother-Rescue 2's first fatality since the 1950s. Ruvolo not only faces the challenge of transforming the house into his Rescue 2, he must also keep the men united and, later, bolster their spirits through 9/11 and beyond. Tom Downey takes us into the fireman's world: the smell of their coats after a good fire, the hardened eyes of a veteran after a fellow fireman's death, the humor and camaraderie. His firemen are not cardboard heroes; they're a group of gritty, larger-than-life personalities brought together by dedication and a mission to save lives. Rescue 2 doesn't leave a fire until everybody's safe. They're the last men out. Theirs is an inspiring story destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-07-09

the most moving book I have ever read.It takes the good with the bad. No sugar coating, all honesty.

4 out of 5 stars A good way to scratch the surface..........2007-03-29

I should know: I'm a firemen's daughter. In fact, I'm a Rescue 2 firemen's daughter (we're a special breed) and have spent my entire life in the wacky world of Rescue firemen. Although it's really hard to capture the type of insanity and devotion these guys have for their jobs - Tom does a really good job. If someone you love is a fireman: read this book. It'll help you understand them better. Hey, even if you don't know anyone whose a firemen you should read this book. I just have 1 bone to pick with you Mr. Downey: Captain Ruvolo's daughters are not what I would call "pampered" (p.62). He loves them and they love him just as much.

5 out of 5 stars great book .......2006-03-25

Amazing stories in this book. You get the feel of the life of a member of the famed FDNY RESCUE 2. It is the kind of book that you read one chapter, and say..."Just one more chapter and I will put it down." But you cant put it down. After I finished the book, I said "I wish there could be more stories." Highly recomend this book to anyone interested in the life of those crazy enough to run in where the rest of the world runs out!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-08-20

A very good documenary about Res2cue. It really captures the lifesyle of firefighters and how they enteract with one another in good and bad times.

It further discribes the hours of vigorous training and education needed to perform rescue work in NY city, from a child impaled on a wrought iron fence to rescuing one of their own from a collapsed building, to the 9-11 collapse of the Twin Towers.

An excellant book for fire service leaders and those who wish to be.

5 out of 5 stars So glad to be an American!.......2005-07-29

What a fantastic book! It gives you just a glimpse of some of the former and present day men of Rescue 2. It's a look into the daily life of a firefighter while also getting to know the personalities of these brave men. I didn't want to put the book down. I laughed and cried throughout the book. I'll always have a high respect for firefighters. This book just reinforced my conviction. Well done Tom Downey!

5 out of 5 stars The absolute, hands down, BEST pottery book on earth........2004-03-01

This is probably... no. ABSOLUTELY the best and most wonderfull book I have ever run across. Obstler does an amazing job of showing (and explaining) the true process of ceramics. This is not a technique or coffee table book although it is easily better at both categories than most books of that sort. This IS a book more about the materials of ceramics than the finished product. Mimi lovingly portrays the full cycle of the process which produces a pot. Something all true potters should know is that the actual end result, the pot, is the smallest and most insignificant part of ceramics. In this book, the reader is introduced to the whole life of the materials which we use. In a mish mash of history, formula, chemistry and geology, Mimi Obstler creates a unique and awe-inspiring story not just of the pot or potter, but of the earth from which both are born.
This book is beautifully crafted, and you can tell, that a lot of love, work and knowledge have gone into it's creation. This is a must have for anyone who truly loves pottery OR geology. I have never seen a book this amazing before. I highly recomend it. This book is worth every cent and so much more. I can honestly say that I am stunned. Thank you Mimi Obstler, this is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary book for any serious potter........2000-04-21

"Out of the Earth Into the Fire" is a necessary book for any potter , and is especially useful for any potter doing their own glazes. It details in it's four chapters, although very long and comprehensive chapters, all of the glaze and clay making ingredients that you will need. The first chapter deals with the glaze cores. It talks of both the historical and the emperical aspects of all the necessary substances in use. A substance that I can't wait to get my hands on is Rotton Stone. I'll let you read the book to find out why. The second chapter is about clays and clay bodies.Although most of us buy prepared clay this gives us reason to make our own. The next chapter concerns auxillary melters. We find here about glaze surfaces; how to best utilize a substance to make a glossy, a matt, or an opaque surface. Finally the last chapter reveals all we want to know about silica and alumina. The appendices are full of useful material. There are even some good pictures in this book. An unexpected surprise.

Why do so many seemingly successful professionals hit the wall in middle age, and decide to either radically scale back their careers or set off in an entirely new direction? Clinical psychologist Steven Berglas, a specialist in success-induced burnout, believes it stems from the "self-handicapping behavior" that baby boomers are exhibiting in record numbers as they climb the corporate ladder and find they aren't happy with what results. Terming the phenomena Supernova Burnout, Berglas defines this workplace ennui as "the constrictive effects of being branded a 'success'" and offers some advice for the psychological distress that is an increasing consequence. In Reclaiming the Fire, he advances his arguments in a serious but accessible manner with references to cultural touch points like Mark Monsky's Looking Out for #1 and help from philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He analyzes "performance-inhibiting" behaviors ranging from substance abuse to abrupt career changes that he says developed from societal attitudes of the last half century, and suggests a few individual and organizational responses (including his 60 Minutes cure, which relies upon passion and intrinsic motivation to battle career malaise). While not everyone will agree with his assessments and prescribed cures, businesspeople who fit Berglas's description--and human resource managers who deal them--will likely find the material intriguing and potentially helpful. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

The definitive work on avoiding burnout, written by the psychologist who is the leading specialist on the issue. An illuminating and useful book for anyone coping with the pressures of work.

In Reclaiming the Fire, Dr. Steven Berglas analyzes the rises and falls of corporate executives, middle managers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and others as they struggle to handle the trappings of successful careers. How does one deal with encore anxiety, the monotony of having to use talents that are no longer psychologically rewarding? Why is it that our national obsession with wealth traps people in careers that often lead them to wonder, "Is that all there is?" And why do highly successful people often set themselves up for disastrous falls?

Dr. Berglas answers all these questions and many more in this groundbreaking book by discussing real people whose careers have left them feeling pressured, burdened, and jaded.

In his most progressive and striking contribution to the literature on career success, Dr. Berglas debunks the persistent myth that women suffer more stress and burnout than men. He disproves the common claim that women involved both in careers and in family life suffer from trying to have it all, and he demonstrates how the drive to form close interpersonal ties a drive that is intrinsic to women can actually prevent both men and women from experiencing burnout. In a related analysis of the mentoring process, Dr. Berglas shows why it is more important for careerists to build legacies for future generations (a process he terms generativity) than to become obsessed with their own personal success. He proves that the process not only benefits the student but provides the mentor with psychological satisfaction and even improved physical health.

Reclaiming the Fire uses the working world not the psychiatric couch as a venue for understanding the psychological and emotional burdens of success. It is the first comprehensive account of how to balance self-esteem and ambition while maintaining challenge and stimulation throughout your career.

Reclaiming the Fire provides insight into:

*Why baby boomers are currently suffering an epidemic of career dissatisfaction

*Why women are uniquely suited to cope with the pressures that cause men to suffer burnout, and what men can learn from them

*How to escape golden handcuffs: the workaholic devotion to a job that is no longer emotionally satisfying

*How to cope with anger that threatens to sabotage your career

*How all professionals can identify the passions that will allow them to sustain and enjoy success throughout their lives

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very good .......2007-07-24

I have not yet read through the entire book but it explores many novel ideas. The author did a very good job in bring the text down to everyones level. There is some information that is just not necessary in the book but other than that it is very good.

5 out of 5 stars More common than you think ... when the adrenaline of chasing success stops working.......2006-06-02

There are countless examples of people who have worked and slaved for years in a tunnel vision quest to be top dog ... only to get there and after a while just walk out of a life they once desired like nothing else. Sometimes they say a change of heart did it ... but the psychology of success and the constant demand and expectations of others over time tips the scales to a real fear of failure. Many people prefer to go out with a bang than to fade away a has-been. An intriguing look that begs the question if success really does make one happy.

4 out of 5 stars When I thought I just had it.......2006-03-20

When I started reading the first few chapters, it was like the author was speaking directly to me, knowing what goes on inside my head. Actually, he even made me realize some things I never did myself. The only thing that hurt about this book is the author's writing style and his habit of using superfluous words. I mean when you have to run to a dictionary and back ten times in one chapter, it takes your mind off from the topic. The book is good if you want to understand the problem, but there aren't any real remedies inside this book. Until the very end, we were still discussing the problem and not the cure. Even in the last two chapters there are just more details about the problem yet no actual remedies.

This is a good book and if you're suffering from a burnout and you should get this book because it's a good first step!

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional read - insightful, clear, and well-written.......2003-03-01

Dr. Berglas has written an exceptional book that I would recommend to those who are facing workplace issues such as burnout and "Isn't there more than this?" questioning. While I believe his research is relevant for all audiences - I would highly recommend it for people in large corporate settings - as well as those in supervisory roles. Personally, I picked up the book hoping to find some answers regarding the "dead ends" and the boredom I was starting to feel at my corporate job - and I found Dr. Berglas' book to be insightful and solutions-oriented for people like me... While the book is well-researched and deals with complex issues, it is clear and concise and should be easily understandable for all audiences to grasp... If this book is calling out to you for some reason, I highly recommend you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent contents - Not easy to apply.......2002-04-28

This book deals with the phenomenon of people who have or have had extraordinary succesful careers and nevertheless found themselves to be extremely unhappy - partially up to the point of self-destruction. This also defines the audience for this book: the people described above or those who take a keen interest in such people.

The book has been written by an adjunct faculty member at Harvard Medical school. The academic level is - as far as I can judge - impeccable. The author quotes on many occasions from actual patient-cases which are common enough that many a reader will recognize some of his or her own headaches. One notices that an effort has been made to write a book that is accessible to the general public. However, the book does maintain a certain academic tone that will be off-putting to some people. There are no exercises, questionaires, or the like that would involve the reader a bit more with the subject matter.

Whoever thinks that reading this book and applying a few quick-fix exercises here and mental readjustments there is going to enable them to continue like before, just happier, is extremely mistaken. Dr. Berglas points out that a lot of the misery discussed is a direct result of some deeply engrained characteristics of our culture. For most people, following up on Dr. Berglas' suggestions will imply a drastic (but doable) change in lifestyle.

Being somewhat of an academic myself with a keen interest in psychological issues, I found the book extremely valuable. The value to you depends on how you personally feel about the above. However, my advice: if in doubt, buy it!

    Book Description

Centauri Prime declares war on the Interstellar Alliance in Book Three of the epic trilogy that continues Babylon 5's brilliant legacy . . .

Blind to the fact that he is a pawn in the Drakh's deadly strategy, Centauri prime minister Durla launches an overwhelming blitzkrieg, sending Centauri warships to devastate other races' homeworlds and pave the way for total conquest.  Yet Durla is forced to fight a war on two fronts.  Even as he mobilizes the massive space fleet for its glorious attack, resistance leader Vir Cotto works feverishly to counter the Drakh's evil influence on Centauri Prime.

Emperor Londo Mollari possesses the key that can reveal the presence of the Drakh, but to do so would spell disaster, so he is forced to remain silent.  But when the Drakh bring another pawn into play--David Sheridan, son of Alliance president John Sheridan--the time for silence may be past.  If Vir and the Resistance are to prevail, it will be only through action, and with help from very strange allies . . .

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good conclusion to the trilogy, though this book is incredibly scarce!.......2006-09-12

Peter David writes a generally believable novel here which wraps up most extant plot threads from the previous 2 stories, as well as pieces from War Without End.

The Drakh story thread is mostly resolved, though this is written with almost no reference to the human efforts against the drakh. The reasons G'kar, sheridan and delenn are on centauri prime are offered, as well as resolution of the thread of the keeper left for their son. Vir (whose changes in previous books make him an almost unrecognizable character) continues to lead an insurgency which eventually places him on the throne. In a piece I wonder was included as a requirement, it even offers a reason for Londo to narrate the film In the Beginning - because he asked delenn for her side of the story while she was a prisoner. This was probably the only piece in the story I felt overly contrived.

Great resolution, doesn't insist on tearing up what we saw in tv episodes (unlike the techno-mage trilogy), however actually getting this book is a problem.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, but Subtract a Star for LIMITED AVAILABILITY.......2005-04-28

Out of the Darkness is an excellent wrap up book three in the Babylon 5: Legions of Fire Trilogy, but difficult to find.
Books one and two were no problem to locate, plenty out there new or used.
I lucked in this one at a used book store by chance.
    *** Come on Ballantine/Del Rey, how about a 2nd printing? ***
To pay $49.95 on Amazon, bid $25.00 or more for it on Ebay is ridiculous for a paperback retailing for $6.50!

5 out of 5 stars An unlikely hero in an outstanding finale.......2005-02-20

Vir Cotto, Hero! Vir Cotto, Emperor! Of course, Babylon V fans knew that Vir would become Emperor after Londo. We also knew that G'Kar would kill Londo and that the capital city of Centauri Prime would be in flames. We also knew that Sheridan would be in time limbo. However, this book, which covers the years 2274-2278 tells us how we got to that point.

The Centauri, under the malevolent guidence of the Drakh, have been building their war machine and are just about ready to strike. Vir has been leading an underground that has cause minor irritation to the plans of Durla, and ultimately, the Drakh, but it didn't put an end to them. That is until Durla was at the final moment of triumph when the underground attacked Durla in his position of strength.

However, getting there, what was the trick. Along the way, there was intrigue, betrayal, and love both won and lost. This was a wonderful storyline, completely consistant with what we already knew about the Babylon V timeline. In fact, this novel fills in a lot of holes that were left in the series, especially considering that this covers the future from the perspective of the Babylon TV series, a future that we got only a glimpse of through prophecy and time distortions.

For the Babylon V fan, this entire trilogy is a must read. I will definately be reading some more Babylon V books, hoping they are as good as this series has been.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Ending to a Good Trilogy.......2004-09-08

The final book of the trilogy, and it does not disappoint. Vir rises up and becomes the leader of his people before he even wears the crown. The final days of Londo are filled with mystery and intrigue, along with some excellent witty commentary between himself and his nemesis/friend G'Kar. Overall, an excellent ending to a most excellent side-story in the Babylon 5 storyline. All three books are well worth your time to pick up and read, especially if you enjoyed the sniping between Londo and G'Kar in the tv series.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Babylon 5 novels.......2004-04-13

Peter David's riveting Centauri trilogy comes to a splendid conclusion in "Babylon 5 Legions of Fire Book III: Out of the Darkness". Centauri Prime Minister Durla becomes an unwitting pawn of the Drakh Entire as he prepares the Centauri Republic for an all out war against the Interstellar Alliance. It is Durla, not the aging Emperor Londo Mollari, who holds the reins of power on Centauri Prime. Interstellar Alliance President John Sheridan and his wife Delenn must come to grips with a deadly terror that his ensnared their son David. Peter David offers a riveting look at G'Kar's final, fateful journey to Centauri Prime. And last, but not least, Vir Cotto will demonstrate why he becomes a worthy successor to Mollari as Centauri Emperor.

2 out of 5 stars This book is simplistic.......2000-11-03

The author provides case study after case study with practically no analysis himself. He spends an entire chapter promoting himself and lambasting a client who didn't heed his advice.

Is this a good book for newcomers? Possibly. If you're a student and don't know much about public relations this book will probably interest you. If you're a practioner and this book is anything other than remidal reading, it may be time to consider finding a new career.

To his credit, the author does present case studies that run the gamut from non-profits, to disasters, to educational instituions, to criminal clients. He does provide a wide array of different situations.

I have no doubt that the author is an excellent practioner of the art of public relations. As a journalist and an instructor, the book leaves something to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2000-03-16

I found this to be one of the best books out there on risk and crisis communication. The author succinctly presents a wealth of practical information and tips. This book is as useful for newcomers to the field, as well as those who have weathered many a crisis. In addition, its universal advice applies to all organizations--whether you are in industry, government, education, sports, or non-profit. I've bought copies for all my staff!
