American History, Volume I (Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in American History).......2006-08-21
Good Book
An in-depth look at issues from both sides........2000-09-20
Taking Sides is a great way to find out more about contraversial issues from the period of Reconstructin to the Present. It dives into issues such as whether or not women of the nineteenth-century overcame the hardships of the west; if Booker T. Washington's philosophy and actions betray the interests of Afican-Americans; if the 1950's were America's "happy days", and much more. This great book reveals both sides to the issues. Your stand is not suede, but you are able to make your own decision.

Book Description
This debate-style reader is designed to introduce students to controversies in gender studies. The readings, which represent the arguments of leading psychologists and other social commentators, reflect a variety of viewpoints and have been selected for their liveliness and substance and because of their value in a debate framework. Students will be exposed to a rich, exciting, and emotionally and politically charged body of theory, research, and practice. TAKING SIDES: GENDER, containing 20 issues organized into six parts, presents hotly debated issues in contemporary scholarly and public discourse. Students will actively develop critical thinking skills by analyzing opposing viewpoints and reach considered judgments. The issues will challenge students to consider what is sex, what is gender, and when is either relevant, and why. They will discover that what might appear to be binary, biologically based distinction is so much more.
An Instructor's Manual accompanies the book. For each issue, the following have been provided: a synopsis of each author's position on the issue, teaching suggestions, and multiple-choice and essay questions. The teaching hints consist of suggestions for generating class discussion around the themes raised by the clashing essays.

Customer Reviews:
More than one side to an argument.......2007-07-19
Current educational significant issues for 2007 are listed within this book including such issues as social experience, standardizing curriculum, producing good citizens, charter schools, bilingual education, school violence, homework, and merit pay. Two major sides are looked at for each issue listed, and one of the issues, redefining of "public school" in question, lists 4 people on the "no" side of the issue and 1 person on the "yes" side. The table of contents does not show that there are 4 different excerpts, but lists it as only "et. al" for three people when it really should be written out for clarity and easier reference.
The bonus issues, changing science curriculum on evolution (known as Intelligent Design (ID) ) and boys' education are extra issues they decided to tack on. They really don't fit into any of the categories from the issues originally listed, and are much more theoretical and directly less significant than the issues originally in the text. The bonus issues are not a necessary read unless you intend on reading everything or something on those particular topics, but it's nice addition for the book.
Considering that this is a 14th edition, there are still way to many places where they forgot to place a space between words and I think a couple of misspellings too.
Besides all the tidbits, the issues are worth reading and understanding, as they capture many nuances that you may or may not have thought of. Even if the points are already obvious to you, it's very arguably a handy well written reference if nothing more than that.
Educational Issues.......2007-06-16
Book was beneficial for class. Emphasizes on different issues within the schools system.
Great Book.......2007-05-16
This is a great book about current education policy that everyone should read.

Customer Reviews:
I actually enjoyed this book for class.......2004-04-14
From a student perspective (ie. having to write weekly 2000 word essays pertaining to this book), I have to say my prof made a wonderful decision to choose this book. The topics were very up-to-date and thought provoking. It's nice to discuss the future of robots, cell phone radiation, and have current heated topics in class. I'm sick of hearing about the abortion, death penalty, right to bare arms topics. Students over used those discussions in high schoool. Basically, I give an A+ for the interesting topics.
The book is also setup in a very student friendly fashion. Topics are given a 1 page summary relating the pros and cons of 2 writers opinions before plunging into their papers. After the 2 opinions are presented, there is also a page for points to ponder afterward. These two features proved very handy when having to do class discussions over something you read a week before. Skimming for quick recall can be a good thing!
Although I wouldn't have bought this book if I didn't have to, I believe it is an excellent choice for profs to use in class.
Great Read.......2004-02-12
This book has some very great issues that everyone can relate to in one way or another. Cound not put it down after starting to read it.
Very thought provoking look at science and ethics.......1998-04-12
The arguements presented are can promote excellent class discussions. Very thought provoking. This is a great book for graduate ethics students and their teachers.

Good book for research/articles for classwork toward a degree in special ed.
Nice overview of current issues in special education.......2003-04-09
As a special education administrator and a doctoral student in special education I appreciate the opportunity to look at issues from different perspectives. I am familiar with many of the authors included in the book and thought that the editor did a very good job in choosing people to contribute. All-in-all, a nice, concise overview of current issues that all special educators should be aware of.
