Book Description
A remarkable collaboration of art and science celebrating the diversity of seeds.
An orchid seed may be minuscule, so small and light that one gram contains more than 7.5 million seeds. In contrast, a single-seeded Seychelles seed is a nut weighing up to 20 pounds. All seeds have the same purpose -- to travel through time and space until they reach the right place at the right moment to create a new plant.
This large-format book melds art and science in an authoritative examination of the design and function of seeds. Special light and scanning electron microscopy are used to obtain astonishing images of diverse seeds at various states of maturity. Pods, pouches, keys, nuts and other vehicles of dispersal are explained and illustrated.
These time capsules of life for plants familiar and strange are presented in minute, beautiful detail. Microphotographs of the tiniest seeds and extraordinarily detailed cutaway images of larger seeds are combined with text that explains the formation and maturation of seeds and describes how they find their way to becoming a copy of the parent plant. Literary references to plant reproduction are featured as well, along with early botanical illustrations.
Authoritative and richly illustrated,
Seeds offers a fascinating and intimate look at the remarkable reproductive process of plants.

An oversized format/presentation to display close-up photos and electron microscopy images.......2007-05-08
The general-interest public will find more accessible Rob Kesseler and Wolfgang Stuppy's SEEDS: TIME CAPSULES OF LIFE. Alexandra Papadakis edits this stunning natural history of seeds, which uses an oversized format/presentation to display close-up photos and electron microscopy images of seed evolution. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew are involved in this reference's publication, which obtains some astonishing images and focuses on the diversity, design and function of seeds the world over.
Stunning Photos.......2007-02-06
This book and the companion book "Pollen" will wow both professionals and layman. Buy it just for the beauty of the superb photos or for the detailed data. Lay these books out on the coffee table and you can be sure they will be picked up over and over again. The photos mezmerize with the sheer magnitude of nature's design.

Book Description
With this newly revised 8th edition of FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY, Mike Seeds' goal is to help students use astronomy to understand science and use science to understand what we are. Fascinating and engaging, this text illustrates the scientific method and guides students to these fundamental questions: "What are we?" and "How do we know?" In discussing the interplay between evidence and hypothesis, Seeds provides not just facts, but a conceptual framework for understanding the logic of science. The book vividly conveys his love of astronomy, and illustrates how students can comprehend their place in the universe by grasping a small set of physical laws. Crafting a story about astronomy, Mike shows students how to ask questions to gradually puzzle out the beautiful secrets of the physical world. Mathematics is incorporated into the text (and in separate sections for easy reference), but the book's arguments do not depend on mathematical reasoning, keeping even math-averse students engaged. The revision addresses new developments in astrophysics and cosmology, plus the latest discoveries, from Mars' buried water to proto-galaxies at the limits of the observable universe. This edition is now fully integrated with a FREE, brand-new student tutorial system. AceAstronomy is Web-based, assessment-driven, contains book-specific activities, and is completely flexible, creating a personalized learning plan based on quiz results to help each student focus on key concepts to be mastered. This superior system gives students fun, interactive learning opportunities and a greater chance for success.

Book Description
This newly revised and updated seventh edition of FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY shows students their place in the universe not just their location, but also their role as planet dwellers in an evolving universe. Fascinating and engaging, the book illustrates how science works, and how scientists depend on evidence to test hypotheses. Students will learn to focus on the scientific method through the strong central theme of "how we know what we know." Through a discussion of this interplay between evidence and hypothesis, Seeds provides not just a series of facts, but also a conceptual framework for understanding the logic of astronomical knowledge. The book vividly conveys the author's love of astronomy, shows students how the universe can be described by a small set of physical laws, and illustrates how they can comprehend their place in the universe by understanding these laws, rather than simply memorizing facts. By crafting a story about astronomy, Seeds shows students how to ask questions of nature and therefore gradually puzzle out the beautiful secrets of the physical world. The book's use of mathematics is incorporated into the body of the text (as well as in separate sections for easy reference), but the arguments of the text do not depend on mathematical reasoning, allowing math-averse students to easily follow the story. The revision covers the history of astronomy, elementary physics concepts, stars and galaxies, the origins of the universe, and the solar system.
Customer Reviews:
Great basic astronomy textbook, for beginners only.......1999-11-28
I took beginning astronomy at college, and this was my book. The 1999 edition. It came with 2 CD-ROMS which are very interesting and helpful. The book goes step-by-step in laying down the history and foundations of astronomy, and takes you all the way through a chapter on life on other planets. In between, it's easy to follow and stops to explain certain terms and well-accepted ideas among modern astronomers. Great book for beginners, intermediate and expert look elsewhere.

Beautiful Book. Good Printing. Great Writing........2006-06-27
For a science that has been studied for as long as there have been humans around to look at the sky, astronomy is rapidly changing. That has resulted in this the fifth edition of this book. Dr. Seeds treats Astronomy almost like a revival preacher. He clearly loves the subject and this comes through in his writing. More than anything else he wants the students to learn a bit about astronomy but to come away clearly knowing the basic principles of the scientific method and perhaps, hopefully seek a career in science.
The book is printed like a high end coffee table book. Brilliant pictures, beautiful printing, and backed up with enough text to explain what is going on. Dr. Seeds has written several astronomy texts. He has had time and feedback from them so that his explanations of fairly complex things such as Einstein's General Theory of Relativity make it seem simple.
This book is primarily on the solar system, but it gets out enough to cover the rest of the galaxy just enough to let you know just how big the universe is.

Book Description
Donald Keene employs his prodigious wealth of knowledge, critical insight, and narrative aplomb to guide readers through the first nine hundred years of Japanese literature -- a period that not only defined the unique properties of Japanese prosody and prose but also produced some of its greatest works. Covering courtly fiction, Buddhist writings, war tales, diaries, poems, and more, Seeds in the Heart explores a vast and variegated treasury of writings. Detailed textual examinations of classic texts -- from the Kojiki to The Tale of Genji, from The Pillow Book of Sei Shônagon to Zeami's Nô plays -- allow students, lay readers, and scholars a new understanding and enjoyment of this great literature.
Customer Reviews:
Standard English Survey of Early Japanese Literature.......2005-06-28
Even if we make allowance for the impressive multi-volume literary histories of Konishi Jin'ichi and Kato Shuichi (as the first reader [1997] has noted), Professor Keene's four-volume opus is surely now the standard English general survey of Japanese literature. Seeds in the Heart, the last volume to be published, covers the very earliest period -- from the Record of Ancient Matters (712) to the "Late Sixteenth Century," spanning some 9 centuries. That leaves 3 volumes for the next four centuries, an indication of the author's personal leanings.
Of course, we all have our own preferences. Since I happen to be interested in Tale Literature (setsuwa), I feel that out of the book's 1265 pages devoted to the early period, setsuwa might have been given a bit more space than the 41 pages between p. 568 and p. 609 (see below). Others will doubtless have a different take; so I think it will be useful to the potential buyer/reader to see what is offered in the table of contents, along with the pagination.
Preface xiii, Introduction 1
EARLY AND HEIAN LITERATURE: 1. The Kojiki 33; 2. Writings in Chinese of the Nara Period 62; 3. The Man'yoshu 85; 4. Poetry and Prose in Chinese of the Early Heian Period 181; 5. The Transition from the Man'yoshu to the Kokinshu 218; 6. The Kokinshu 245; 7. Late Heian Collections of Waka Poetry 277; 8. Late Heian Poetry and Prose in Chinese 341; 9. Heian Diaries 358; 10. The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon 412; 11. The Beginnings of Fiction 433; 12. The Tale of Genji 477; 13. Courtly Fiction After The Tale of Genji 515; 14. Mirrors of History 551; 15. Tale Literature 568.
THE MIDDLE AGES: Introduction 609; 16. Tales of Warfare 613; 17. The Age of the Shin Kokinshu 643; 18. Waka Poetry of the Kamakura and Muromachi Periods 699; 19. Buddhist Writings of the Kamakura Period 749; 20. Courtly Fiction of the Kamakura Period 789; 21. Diaries of the Kamakura Period 825; 22. Essays In Idleness 852; 23. Medieval War Tales 868; 24. Renga 921; 25. Diaries and Other Prose of the Muromachi Period 971; 26. No and Kyogen as Literature 999; 27. Literature of the Five Mountains 1062; 28. Muromachi Fiction: Otogi-Zoshi 1092; 29. The Late
Sixteenth Century; Glossary 1176; Selected List of Translations into English 1184; Index 1189.
. . . in short, a highly informative, useful resource which I recommend to anyone curious about early Japanese literature.
A general history that sometimes runs astray.......1999-04-30
Of the few books on Japanese literary history available in English, this volume is perhaps the best available. So much so that it inspired a widely acclaimed Japanese translation. However, the majority of the ideas presented keep within excepted standards, and when Keene's insight starts to become apparent the subject changes before a thorough explanation is given, even in places where such an explanation would be considered neccisary. This, however, is the only weak point of this book, although it is a major drawback.
A work of genius.......1997-08-07
Keene has written a book that, though using an immense range of Japanese scholarly sources, is easily accessible to the interested reader.
His narrative style is clear and appealing.
He not only describes the Japanese classical literary canon, and quotes large chunks of it, but also evaluates the poetry and prose he treats with a careful and cultivated aesthetic sensibility.
The book is a delight to read.
Nothing like it exists on Japanese literature in the English language.
Konishi Jin'ichi's literary history is designed for specialists, and Kato Shuichi's similar 3-volume history does not have the depth and breadth of Keene's book with its characteristic attention to detail as Kato wrote his study mainly with Japanese readers in mind.
In short, 'Seeds in The Heart" is the culmination of a lifetime's scholarship, and provides an extraordinarily moving feast for readers

Book Description
In three parts, Jameson presents the postmodern problem of Utopia, attempting to diagnose the cultural present and to open a perspective on the future of a world that is all but impossible to predict with any certainty -- "a telling of the future," as Jameson calls it, "with an imperfect deck."
Customer Reviews:
Bravo Jameson!.......2005-02-06
Aside from "Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism," this is my favorite book of Jameson's. In this eloquent and at times difficult book, Jameson goes further into his analysis of postmodern culture. What I like most about this book is his detailed discussion of architecture and built space in postmodernity. He also says something about the importance of utopian politics for him. All in all, this book is short and very well written. A must read for anyone interested in Western Marxism, cultural theory, and/or postmodernism.

Class book.......2007-10-11
We purchased this book for my husband's class and to be quite honest, I don't want to sell it back. Very interesting!
a magnificent subject.......2005-01-26
A fun read if you are already keen on astronomy. But even if you are not, Seeds has presented an introductory course on the subject in an attractive and clear manner. Heavily illustrated with colour diagrams of many topics, you can find both a centuries long history, and the latest research observations. Especially for interplanetary exploration, for which there has been an enduring fascination by the public.
All this is presented in a consistent framework that can instill a sense of wonder in a student. Indeed, to a student with imagination and diligence, studying the book can convey a magnificent picture of the universe.

Be careful with "Printed Access Card Ace Astronomy , Virtual Astronomy Labs" .......2007-01-02
I've worked through the first 3 chapters of the book and so far it is quite good. Review questions and problems in the book are valuable to validate what you learned.
However, one reason I selected this book was the stated access to online materials (as part of the "Product" purchased). The online materials (especially the tests) are also quite helpful. Once registered, you only have access to the materials for 180 days. While that sounds like a lot of time, if you are learning in your spare time, this will most likely not be enough. After a few phone calls, it seems that you may be able to purchase more time for $30-$40, but it is not real clear if adn how to do this.
