Book Description

Finally a social skills program that covers all the bases!

Whether it's learning how long one can look at somebody without being accused of staring; how to shift topics, despite one's desire to stick with that all-consuming special interest; how to say no to peer pressure; or dealing with a sensitive topic - it's all here...and more. In this comprehensive and user-friendly book, the author translates years of experience working with students with Asperger Syndrome and social-communication difficulties. After brief introductory chapters on skills to target, instructional strategies, behavior management, promoting generalization, etc., as well as a special chapter by Brenda Smith Myles on relevant characteristics of autism spectrum disorders, the reader is presented with the essence of this must-have resource: 70 of the skills that most commonly cause difficulty for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and social-communication problems. The presentation of each skill consists of a reproducible skill handout, as well as activity sheets listing ways teachers and parents can demonstrate, practice, and reinforce the skill in the classroom and at home. A concluding chapter on promoting peer acceptance offers sensitivity training programs for both students of various age groups and school staff, making this a complete social skills training package for students of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-09-03

This book has step by step instructions on social skills and I love the easy to read and teach format. I don't know if my son has Asperger's, but he really struggles with social skills and this has been a great help to us.

5 out of 5 stars very practical workbook.......2007-08-06

I found this book very useful. It lists skills a child should have, which are so inherent to those who don't have this probelm, they are actually hard to think of on your own. For each skill it gives examples and ways to encourage gaining the skill. Every parent whose child's social skills aren't up to par with their peers will benefit from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Social Skills Training.......2007-03-10

This book is an excellent resource for those who want to assist children and young adults with social skills training. There are clear cut lessons and activities that cover a variety of topics from how to greet others to asking someone on a date. Very valuable for those who need concrete examples of the correct way to approach many different social situations. Could be used for children on the autism spectrum, but also for any child who could benefit from practice in social interaction, even those who are shy. Anyone who lives and works with students who have social skills defecits would find this book useful.

5 out of 5 stars Easy reading, understanding, and easy to use lessons.......2007-02-23

This book is not only good to help those in the autism spectrum with lacking social skills, but they can also be applied easily to teaching any children without autism. It is straightforward easy to use, to the point. Definitely worth the money, and was recommended to me by several mothers with more than 2 children with autism. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars A must for all kids with social skill issues.......2007-01-09

Jed Baker has done it again. This is a nice follow-up to his social picture book. This is done nicely because you can pick and choose which areas you need to work on. Most children could use help with social skills to reduce anxiety, regardless of whether they have issues. My son does not have aspergers and his social skills issues are minimum but with practice the skills he has have been greatly refined. The program can be used in parts at home by parents with minimal training or in a school environment with speech therapists etc.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Retarded People.......2007-10-11

Great book for reading on the special little bus whilst trying not to drool on ones self. Another gem from the Fundamentalist Capitalist Fanatics crowd at the Cato Institute. The era of the of the mindless "think tanks" shall be remembered with glee by the those of us waiting to sue the pants off them as soon as we get ourselves together. Great book for retards.

5 out of 5 stars An important book about the "science" of global warming.......2007-07-08

This book deals with many of the common myths regarding global warming using facts instead of personal attacks in order to deal with the many issues and constituencies who have a stake in the global warming debate. Michaels shows that far from there being a "consensus" about global warming, there is a vast group of special interests who distort facts, ignore real scientific research, and create "facts" out of fiction.
Michaels gives many examples of supposedly scientific conclusions about global warming are really a closed loop of closed minds who exclude any evidence that questions the reasons behind global climate changes.

Are there holes in the Arctic sea ice in the summer.? Yes, but they have always shrunk and expanded over millions of years. Is the Antarctic getting warmer or colder? Yes and no, depending on which part of this vast area you are measuring. Are CO2 levels increasing? Yes, but they are no where close to historical levels reached many times in the past. Polar bears on the verge of extinction? Not when the truth is that there are more of them now than at any other time in history (and eating those cute little fur seals in record numbers, no less.)
The list of currently held myths are dealt with in a very objective fashion, backed up by real research, and showing the earth to be a very complicated system, which is not very well understood. Michaels does a great job of showing that many of the things we think we understand about climate change are really not what you read in the newspapers.

If you are looking for a book that deals with the many arguments used in the global climate change debate in a fair and objective way, this is the best of the lot. But of course Michaels is attacked because he does not rely on tax money for a living, unlike the hundreds of thousands of politicians, bureaucrats, media people and their ilk who flood the world with hysterical stories about the end of the world due to global warming when the evidence is quite to the contrary.

The irony of course is that many who see a great conspiracy in those who question the reasons behind climate change somehow blame "big oil" for asking questions about a supposedly finished debate. They obviously have failed to notice, as Michaels has, that most advertising by "big oil" today is to embrace the agenda of the Gores of the world so that they can make even more money trading "carbon credits" which do nothing to reduce air pollution, and not have to spend a dime for oil exploration.

5 out of 5 stars The reality distortion machine.......2007-06-26

Global warming alarmists follow the rules set down by Leon Trotsky when he established the Soviet Union's Agitprop program. Lie, lie, lie. Spread false stories over and over again. Helped by sympathizers and left-wing media, the lies will soon become accepted as truth. Over and over again in the 20th Century, we saw the basic concepts of Soviet Agitprop employed.

Patrick Michaels demonstrates how these concepts are being once again deployed by the global warming alarmists. The global warming lobby is not monolithic. Some members are motivated by nothing more than simple greed: academics who must have grant money in order to keep their jobs. They often have no political purposes, just a need for public money to pay their salaries and fringe benefits. Some non-academics are simply cause hustlers: saving the planet is a potent headline for fund-raising solicitations. Others, the real movers and shakers, want to change the world, they want a single world governmenr to rule the lives of everyone. (It is neither accident nor coincidence that Earth Day is also Lenin's birthday.)

Here Michaels dissects the process of distortion engaged in by the various pressure groups and the media. For example, one interesting graph depicts the way UN IPPC projections of temperature change are consistently amplified in the media, regardless of what the IPPC report actually predicts. The pernicious influence of monopolistic government funding producing an echo chamber of politically correct peer-reviewed "studies" is especially interesting. In short, you don't get financed and certainly not published if you don't agree in advance that your findings will support the "consensus" position.

One by one, with ample supporting documentation, Michaels blows apart what amount to media myths about global warming.

This is a must-read book for anyone attempting to get at the truth of global warming.

Jerry

5 out of 5 stars Meltdown: The Predictable Distortion of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media.......2007-06-08

This is a brilliant and witty review of the issues concerning global warming.

1 out of 5 stars Independent Thinkers Beware!.......2007-06-04

Mr. Michaels is a member of no less that 20 institutes, think tanks, and other national groups that receive significant funding from Exxon--places like the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the George C. Marshall Institute, and the Heartland Institute. He also admits that he has accepted funding from various fossil fuel industry groups. One would have to suspend a lot of disbelief to think that such a well-funded person is not serving as a spokesperson for these industries, or, at least, is badly, badly compromised.

4 out of 5 stars Aspergers Syndrome Emotional difficulties.......2007-06-05

An excellent book, good practical advice. A must for anyone involved with teaching a child with Aspergers Syndrome. The first few chapters breakdown in simple talk what Aspergers People have the most difficulties with. It points out the areas that are considered "normal" for Aspergers syndrome, and that your child is not the only child having these difficulties. I found this particularly useful to show to teachers and principals who are either too busy or lack the inclination to learn about the Syndrome.

The next part of the book explains the rage process, what to look out for, where the teaching zones are and where it is best left until the child has calmed down.

The latter stage of the book gives solutions to the issues that result in Tantrums and meltdowns.

A must for anyone teaching Aspergers children and a great help to parents.

5 out of 5 stars Best available - for adult tantrums also.......2007-03-04

For people struggling with Asperger tantrums/breakdowns/lock-ups/rage, this book offers many insights and strategies to understand, prevent and manage the behaviour. Highly recommended.

This book not only gives people the insite on how to work with someone with Aspergers.. it also gives them the tools to do it. All of my sons teachers photocopy the charts & use them.

I have noticed a drastic change in how school personnel deal with my son after they read the book... it makes for a much better school environment for my son & those around him.

5 out of 5 stars If I could own only one book on Asperger Syndrome..........2006-10-11

Honestly, this is a must have as far as I am concerned. It is a small book, but it is full of essential information that can help parents and professionals understand how to help individuals with Asperger Syndrome reach their potential. I have recommended this book to many parents and professionals in my work as an educational specialist and find it helpful when working as a member of an IEP team. Busy professionals and parents who advocate for children with Asperger Syndrome will find themselves referring to this book again and again.

Book Description

"It's the economy, stupid," is a refrain the United States will never live down, and not without reason. The relentless march of technological development and globalization continues to put pressure on all national economies, providing opportunity for some and marginalization for others. Around the world, nations will need to overcome twin economic shocks: a wave of baby boomers will retire and leave the workforce, while too few young, well-educated people will be available to fill a rising tide of high-skill, technology-related jobs. Ed Gordon marshals vast amounts of data to illustrate how these trends are quickly converging, creating a labor vacuum--with potentially disastrous consequences for economic competitiveness and individual opportunity. In the United States, for example, major studies agree that the majority of the jobs now being created require skills possessed by only 20 percent of the current workforce; meanwhile, a large pool of under-trained workers are seeing their jobs exported to developing countries, automated, or outsourced, while millions of high-paying jobs, in such fields as engineering, computing, and health care are going unfilled. In The 2010 Meltdown, Gordon sounds a wake-up call to business leaders, policymakers, educators, and concerned citizens, employees, and parents--anyone with a stake in our economic future. Beyond the demographic issues, he notes that such cultural factors as Wall Street's obsession with short-term results (which favors cost-cutting over long-term training) and neglect of math and science skills at school are contributing to a fundamental mismatch between labor supply and demand. But the news is not all grim. Gordon highlights innovative initiatives in training, education, and community development in the United States and around the world that can serve as models for positive action, and he outlines a plan for reversing the destructive trends before we reach a crucial crossroad by the year 2010. Ultimately, The 2010 Meltdown is an optimistic book about social change, setting an agenda for reforms in education, policy, and business investment that will promote economic freedom, renewal, and prosperity.

5 out of 5 stars Torn by Two Visions of Ourselves.......2007-10-06

The 2010 Countdown grabbed my attention from the moment I opened it. It is well researched, data based, and yet exciting to read. Ed Gordon masterfully weaves facts, quotes, and anecdotes that engage readers of all learning styles through a history of the past, the reality of the present, and the hope of the future in dealing with the impending job crisis.

While the book brings forth the start reality of labor shortages now and in the future, Gordon leaves the reader with a variety of solutions to consider. He draws conclusions from data that are not self evident but powerfully enrich his message.

This is a book that when you finally put it down and reflect, there is a sense of clarity that urges you to take action in your own way to be part of a hopeful future.

5 out of 5 stars Herb Schumann Was Right On Via Lauding This Masterwork.......2007-09-19

My coworker Herb Schumann righfully implored me to purchase this book. It is compelling, stark and a call to action. Even in the realm of Human Resources, America has a shortage of professionally trained and experienced people to handle human relations. Our educational system still continues to be incorrecly rooted for an outmoded agrarian society. This is a counterproductive disaster and by the year 2010 it will be catostrophic. Dr. Edward Gordon is renowned in educational and training environments. He is reputed to be an oustanding lecturer on these subjects. This book was magnificent and in light of the monumental subject matter, it is imperative for Dr. Gordon to continue writing, updating and illuminating us in reference to the all-important educational/employment crises.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Future.......2007-06-25

Ed Gordon focuses on the workforce and the future. In his latest book, The 2010 Meltdown, he clearly outlines the relationship between education and economic development and the future implications across countries and continents. The book is packed with in-depth research and is presented in a crisp, no-nonsense style that is an easy read. There are no clear answers, but the reasoned approach provides food for thought on four-year colleges and the steps that should be taken for employment preparedness tomorrow. This problem is exacerbating despite globalization and a perceived increase in labor supply, and Dr. Gordon proves his understanding of the scope of the situation and potential outcomes we may experience.

4 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-05-15

This book provides the data that proves we are experiencing a skills crisis in America. Our culture promotes the "need" for a college education, yet only 15% of those who finish high school will ever attain a 2 0r 4 year degree. What about the other 85% of our kids? We need to quit drinking the kool aid being distributed by the colleges and pay attention to the Technical schools. Our young people can earn a great living and have skills that are in high demand by getting technical training. This book tells about that need -- and suggests ways to fix it.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Invite Him To Speak. Just read the book........2007-04-08

the book itself is good. His timing may be off (2010). He's too late.
The problem that academics have is that for the most part, they keep their info among other academics. The content of his book needs to be on talk shows and reviewed by people like Oprah, so that its import can be known by the common man (the ones this is about), not just those who go to lectures at universities.
In person, Doctor Gordon ("Don't call me Ed") yells at his audience to gain attention (poorly done) and "holds court" with an ego that can't be cut by a good knife. The point here is that with his huge ego and poor personal presentation (he wouldn't sign my book prior to the lecture due to not having it purchased at the seminar, i bought it on Amazon)he causes the book's content to get lost in his hubris.
This is an important book (the content is critical) that will probably never reach beyond academia due to the character of the author.
All that said. Read it. His researchers did a great job and the content will have you shaking your head.

1 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING AT ANY PRICE.......2007-09-15

I enjoy satire, especially when the targets are politicians and ridiculously hyped celebrities. However, I found this book extremely disappointing even at a steeply discounted price. My reaction after reading it was: "Is that it?" A picture may be worth a thousand words, but I didn't find that to be the case in this instance. The stories, gossip, and commentaries about these celebrity meltdowns that appeared in various media were far funnier than the caricatured likenesses in this book with its "interactive" pull-tabs that add little or no embellishment to the humor of these parodies. The cadre of media pundits who wrote columns about these foolish antics were more searing and entertaining than what is presented is this book. I donated it to a sale at a local library. At least a potential buyer could examine the book and perhaps deem it worth the maximum price of $3.00 as a gag gift. I was interested in other pop-up books in this series but have since deleted them all from my wish/shopping lists. It's difficult for me to believe that most people who paid the original retail price of $29.95 didn't regret it. I regretted paying $5.99.

5 out of 5 stars Pop-Up Book gets an A minus rating from the Lenster.......2007-05-12

This book is a coffee table gem! It is an outstanding bithday gift for those folks you know who are raunchy and quirky and middle-aged. Extremely clever. Expensive but worth every penny. I loved the O.J. Simpson car chase the best. The only thing I don't like about it is the cover. Michael Jackson looks horrifyingly, frighteningly creepy, which he probably does in real life, too, nevertheless, I'd rather they had put Hugh Grant or Paris Hilton on there, and left Michael off or made him much smaller than the other cover shots. But the book is a wonderful conversation piece. Fun for the whole family (but best to keep out of the hands of small children for a number of reasons).

5 out of 5 stars This is too funny.......2007-03-27

This is a book of hilarious caricatures that will make you laugh out loud, if you have a sense of humor, that is. There are not many fun books for adults so I treasure this all that much more. I think the Tom Cruise addition is too funny for words and Kate Moss and OJ's pages just take it over the top. I got this over the holidays but bought another as a "Get Well" gift. There is nothing that cures like laughter and this will have you rolling on the floor. If you're not into celebrity gossip, this is not for you. If however you enjoy taking a peek at the lives of the rich and infamous, get yourself a copy and have at it. Too, too funny.

About Branding Iron: Branding Lessons from the Meltdown of the U.S. Auto Industry Toyota will soon displace General Motors as the world’s largest automaker. Since 2000, GM’s market cap fell from $66 billion to $15 billion. In 1980 GM sold 45 of every 100 cars that rolled out of showrooms in the U.S. It now sells 26. By any yardstick, that is a crisis. The root cause of this financial cataclysm mystifies many of the players in the industry. But the numbers tell a clear story. The headlines offer a simplistic interpretation. They say that legacy costs, poor cost control, ill-advised investments in other automakers and in undistinguished products—all of which are serious issues—caused the trouble. That’s wrong. Or, worse, incomplete and myopic—the same kind of myopia that created the problem in the first place. Like many a crisis, this one has been brewing for decades. And the cost-cutting quick fixes proposed by many industry “experts” won’t solve it. Why not? Because it’s not the root cause. What is killing US automakers is their inability to attract growing numbers of customers to its numerous brands, many of which seem almost irrelevant today. In a few words: bad brand management. (“Iron,” if you’re wondering, is what the auto industry calls its products.) What makes a world-class brand? The authors describe great brands as “a promise wrapped in an experience.” The best brands make a strong, clear commitment to stand for something, to do it better than anyone else, and orchestrate the entire ownership experience. This requires a level of courage beyond most executives. With wit and humor, Branding Iron uses lessons from the car business to guide readers in every business on a quest to build a world-beating brand that leaves a real mark, one made the old-fashioned way—burned in with a red hot iron. The authors do the tough analysis and ask tough questions that most Boards of Directors should be asking, and they give even tougher answers.

3 out of 5 stars OK but it feels like Monday Morning Quarterbacking.......2007-02-22

Reading this book was highly recommended by some associates. I was hoping for more other than recommending the domestic auto companies reduce the number of brands and dealers they carry. Or they should have more corporate courage. Having read it now I find it a bit too much like some of Tom Peters works which were prone to picking out outstanding companies that have since fallen or ignoring the global changes that caught the truck and SUV heavy domestic auto makers with their proverbial pants down.

I got more out of Barbarians to Bureaucrats Corporate Life Cycle Strategies.

3 out of 5 stars An essential read for insiders, but less than it could have been........2007-01-23

This was a much anticipated read, as the topic is timely and the authors are known to have the auto industry experience necessary to produce an insightful book on car branding. While worth reading, at least for auto industry geeks like myself, Branding Iron suffers from three weaknesses. First, there are several editing gaffes (not unique in my recent reading experience). Second, the advice on getting from a poor branding situation to a strong one is thin at best. To be sure, the authors make clear recommendations on reducing brand count, especially in the case of Ford, but how to get from point A to point B is easier said than done. Perhaps that is why they shied away from offering definitive advice for GM, which has the most complex global brand situation of any auto company. Lastly, the authors state that they don't want to get into the economics aspect of branding, but by not doing so their theories have to be taken entirely on faith. Nice try, guys, but you came up a little short.

5 out of 5 stars Solution-based Critique.......2007-01-10

This writing is the best prescription for a very sick patient. Surgery followed by very closely prescribed med's leads me to believe that all hope is not lost.

No nonsense analysis of the current state of affairs as it relates to the US auto industry. Very current and on-point. Anyone in the automobile business (especially those in the glass tower) should take a serious read.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a car nut to love this book.......2006-12-07

Saying that Charlie Hughes and William Jeanes book is about branding in the car business is like saying the new Tesla Roadster is a car. While the statements are true, the book "Branding Iron" is really about leading a business successfully. Even though most of the examples come from the automotive industry, the lessons learned apply to all areas of business. I especially enjoyed the focus on building a conspiracy around your company and product. Far too often, companies underestimate the intelligence of their customers and their customers' willingness and eagerness to help if you just let them in on the game. And once your company has achieved its lofty goals, you should re-read this to avoid being killed by their own success.

5 out of 5 stars What an excellent tool!.......2007-09-30

This book is an excellent tool for children having diffiulties controlling their emotions. The visual thermometer and the "social story" makes it very helpful to assist these children to learn how to respond to their feelings/emotions more appropriately. My four year old likes to look at his thermometer and read the story every time he has reached a "5". It's been very helpful for him.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for dealing with anxiety in children!.......2007-08-18

I am a behavioral therapist treating children with Autism and so far this book has proved to be a vital tool for dealing with anxiety-related behaviors. The number/rating scale helps children gauge their own level of anxiety without having to come up with the right words to say and then gives them the tools to calm themselves down instead of hitting, biting, etc. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Kids Who Struggle With Strong Emotions.......2007-05-06

I'd say for toddler through 8 years (emotional/social scale). Wonderful book to give alternatives to hitting, biting, etc.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Learning from the Mistakes of the (Formerly) Rich and Infamous .......2007-06-27

At the end of her new book, Marianne Jennings marvels that people continue to be surprised by ethical collapses in corporations.

A professor of legal and ethical studies at the W. P. Carey School of Business, Jennings says that it's possible to see these business train wrecks coming -- no one should be surprised at the crash. The behaviors that lead to ethical collapse in companies are known to result in damage and pain. Companies that engage in them will slip, employees and investors will be hurt .... but everyone will still be surprised.

That's why Jennings' new book, "The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse: How to Spot Moral Meltdowns in Companies...Before It's Too Late," is such an important read right now. In spite of the ruin to lives and livelihoods brought about by the collapse of Enron, WorldCom and Adelphia -- in spite of the regulatory reform that followed -- companies and employees will continue to find ways to flirt with the edge.

Jennings' book mines the history of the past decade recounts the inside stories of the corporate shenanigans that kept headline writers happy and Eliot Spitzer's staff busy. It is fascinating to read about the insider conflicts of the HealthSouth board, the do-anything pressure at WorldCom to make stratospheric numbers, the distorting influence of Svengali CEOs on young minions. Jennings' reports include the details, the emails and the anecdotes that allow readers to understand what happened and who was involved.

But these are not simply war stories. Jennings analyzes the events, beginning with the first who-will-notice compromise right through to the full blown hubris that infected the giants at their fall. Along the way she highlights the warning signals that were ignored.

But as Jennings' points out, the path to ethical collapse is "a pattern of devolution." Leaders and workers can become inured to the habits and justifications that point a company in the wrong direction. Jennings' book offers practical advice on how to identify the pattern, and supplies prevention tools to halt it. So put on your glasses and set aside some weekend hours to hear what Jennings has to say about keeping your business on solid ground.

Jennings is well-qualified to advise on this topic. One of her long-term research projects yielded the 2000 book, "Building a Business Through Good Times and Bad: Lessons from Fifteen Companies, Each With a Century of Dividends." She has conducted more than 300 workshops and seminars in the areas of business, personal, government, legal, academic and professional ethics. Her book, "A Business Tale: A Story of Ethics, Choices, Success, and a Very Large Rabbit," a fable about business ethics, was chosen by Library Journal as its business book of the year and was a finalist for two other literary awards for 2004.

Jennings would have us look at corporate culture on a macro level to refocus on high standards and consequently restore trust. Everyone will sleep better. And, in the end, those numbers should climb, too, because when ethical miscreants engage in slippery behavior to conceal disappointing performance, companies do not take the tough corrective steps needed to really turn things around. Isn't that ironic?

5 out of 5 stars Ethics Rules.......2007-05-07

A great overview of the hidden pressures that drive ethical lapses. A must read for anyone who is responsible for compliance activities and/or setting the tone at the top in terms of ethical standards.

5 out of 5 stars The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse.......2007-04-03

This should be REQUIRED reading of all undergraduate and graduate students in all colleges and universities in the United States and is an example of how not to do things as have been previously done. Please note that I know Professor Jenings personally, and this book is a winner!

Book Description

Sugar Is Not Love

Do you have a smart, creative, loving child who is also cranky, inattentive, and sometimes downright obnoxious? If you’ve written off this negative behavior as “typical” for your child’s age—whether toddler or teen—stop and think: Does your child have a taste for soda, sugary breakfast cereals, and treats like candy and cookies? Does she eat regularly scheduled meals or skip them? What, exactly, does he drink and snack on throughout the day?

Your child’s behavior may be linked to diet—specifically to the sugar in obvious sources like sweets and soda and to hidden sugars that lurk in many foods, fruit-based drinks, and “healthy” snacks like granola bars. And if your son or daughter is sugar sensitive, misbehavior and moodiness can be aggravated by missed or late meals and junk foods.

Now, bestselling author Kathleen DesMaisons offers you a workable solution for getting back your child by changing his diet—without creating a sense of deprivation, without setting unrealistic goals, and without turning sugar into “forbidden fruit.” This book offers:

• A step-by-step program, backed by years of research, for gradually improving the food your child eats—you and your whole family will benefit!
• Tips for navigating the sugar-laden world of birthday parties, holidays, and school cafeterias
• Ways to incorporate healthy snacking and regular mealtimes into your child’s day, including suggestions for meals and snacks, plus recipes

Little Sugar Addicts isn’t about strange foods, dramatic lifestyle changes, or complicated menus—just support, guidance, and real-life suggestions from other parents that work. It will help you make the connection between the addictive qualities of sugar and negative behavior and offer a healthy solution you and your whole family can live with.

5 out of 5 stars Little Sugar Addicts is a great book!.......2006-09-23

The program that Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons designed for children in her book Little Sugar Addicts is wonderful. The book describes the program is simple, plain language. Dr. DesMaisons has dedicated her life to helping people heal and her compassion, warmth and sensitivity comes out in her latest book, Little Sugar Addicts. I read this book and started doing the program with my kids and I have seem miraculous changes in them. It has been such a blessing. This book is very easy to read and the program is very easy to do. I highly recomend it to all parents.

5 out of 5 stars Little Sugar Addicts Changed Our Life.......2006-09-22

I read Dr. Kathleen DesMaison's "Your Last Diet" and followed her program for about 9 months. It changed my life! I lost 30 pounds and I feel so much better, physically and emotionally. I have more energy, self-confidence, inner peace and zest for life. I was well on my way to healing my sugar addiction and was ready to help my children.

Then, I read "Little Sugar Addicts" to help my children. "Little Sugar Addicts" helped me guide my family through the process of healing their sugar addiction. It had everything we needed: easy to follow step-by-step instructions, recipes, ideas for the holidays and inspiring stories from other parents. The transformation of my children was amazing. What's more, Kathleen's program is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix or a bunch of other things to buy. It is economical, simple and it works. Our family has been healed by this book and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Little sugar addicts.......2005-09-30

As an educator I found this personally helpful and bough a copy for our food service manager. It also gave us more information for parents who have complained about our ban on ALL junk foods including those with high sugar content.

5 out of 5 stars This book will answer so many questions parent have!.......2004-11-05

Kathleen DesMaisons first book, Potatoes Not Prozac, changed my life. I went from a completely depressed person well on my way to taking anti-depressants, to a happy, confident person who loves life--all because I changed the way I ate! Since healing my own body and mind I have changed my children's diets with miraculous results.

Before Kathleen's program my kids would whine, scream, hit, be totally out of control, throw tantrums and in general, I didn't like them very much a lot of the time. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong?!? How could I feel this way about my kids and what could I do about it? No amount of parenting advice or classes could change what was going on with them. Well, after getting myself steady on Kathleen's program I started to look at my kids diet. It took a little time and adjustment, but now by feeding them differently and at consistant times they are mostly fun, loving, compassionate, focused, easy to talk to and the joys I always knew they were. Food was the answer, pure and simple!

Get this book if you've ever had those feelings of helplessness with your kids. It will change your life and your families life!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best books ever for families.......2004-10-14

My experience is much like the previous reviewer's, only I was a bit older when I found Dr. DesMaison's
work, and started following her food program. Her books explained my whole life....depression, mood
swings, meltdowns, temper tantrums, low self-esteem etc. "Doing the food" changed all of this. I've just
finished reading "Little Sugar Addicts", and I think how wonderful that families today have this
available to them, and what a difference it would have made in my family's lives. What is so different
about this is it is not the parent/s *telling* the children what to do, but inviting the whole family to
participate in what and how changes will be made. Lots of quotes from real people that are doing this plan.
It works. I recommend this book to all parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, friends with children.
What a difference it will make.

Book Description

In his newest book, award-winning environmental journalist David Steinman makes sense out of the tangle of issues surrounding climate change. He provides clear, simple steps we can all take to make more responsible environmental choices in our everyday lives, from the food we put on our tables, to the products we use in our homes, and the cars we buy. He shows, for example, how changing even a simple habit of driving to the grocery store to ordering food online can save almost 900 miles a year, reducing both traffic congestion and petroleum emissions.
Steinman traveled the country from his home base in California through the United States to talk with farmers, businessmen, professors, housewives, counter-terrorism experts and many others to find the link between environmentalism, conservatism, patriotism and national security. He reveals how our reliance on petroleum-based products and chemical pesticides negatively impacts our health, our national security and our planet. He presents a number of fascinating anecdotes and case studies about people and companies working to live “green” — using ecological wisdom as the basis for their decision-making — in the process improving everything from their children’s IQs to their company’s bottom line.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Call for Green Patriotism.......2007-01-06

In Safe Trip to Eden, the author introduces an interesting concept called Green Patriotism, which is the call to Americans to protect our environment because it will ultimately strengthen our national security. He takes us on a trip across America and beyond (to the rainforest in Costa Rica, the San Juan Islands, the Adirondacks, etc.) and each place we learn something new about our current environmental state of affairs - the problems, what is being done by environmentalists to correct them, and how we can make choices in our own lives to support the solutions.

The author emphasizes our power as consumers in a capitalistic culture -that each of our purchase decisions is like casting a vote. He also makes the point that environmentalism is not a partisan issue. While it has been associated with liberals, he gives a history of Republicans and environmentalism in chapter 9.

The book is extremely comprehensive in that it discusses the presence of petrochemical toxins in food and home products, the evolving green car industry, a facinating Pentagon risk assessment report on global warming, natural medicine, the treatment of livestock, negative effects of underpricing in the marketplace, how to maintain a sustainable forest, and much more.

Overall, it's a facinating, empowing and very educating read. I highly recommend it!
