In the aftermath of the Columbine High School tragedy, a story came out about Cassie Bernall, a young woman who allegedly professed her belief in God in the moments before she was shot dead. Hailed a modern-day martyr by Christian groups and the media, detectives revealed months later that she may never have had such an exchange with her killer. Bernall's parents responded to the news with a statement:
"Our intent was to share Cassie's story in an effort to encourage parents and teenagers. If any of our actions have hurt or offended anyone, we sincerely apologize."
In She Said Yes, a moving memoir written by Cassie's mother, Misty Bernall, we meet the real Cassie, a typical adolescent who struggles with peer pressure and her relationship with her parents. Once headed down the common teenage path of self-loathing and depression, Cassie turned her life around through her faith and the support of a group of people who helped her find peace and purpose--her youth group at church. Though Cassie was far from the perfect child, She Said Yes tells the story of how Cassie's faith gave her the strength to overcome the obstacles she faced in her young life. Regardless of what happened at Columbine, She Said Yes is a moving tribute to an extraordinary young woman and a lesson for both parents and teenagers alike.
Book Description
"One of the most gripping stories to come out of the shooting at Columbine High School"
is told in the acclaimed national bestseller that illuminates the most remarkable aspect of 17-year-old Cassie Bernall's tragic death: her life.
She Said Yes is an "intense and fascinating memoir" (Publishers Weekly) of an ordinary teenager growing up in suburban Colorado, and faced -- as all teenagers are -- with difficult choices and pressures. It is only now, when the world knows Cassie Bernall as one of the Columbine High students killed by two rampaging schoolmates, that the choices she made offer a profound relevance for us all. Once a rage-filled young woman who walked a path similar to that of her killers, Cassie found a way out of her personal snares and, through her faith and a family's love, chose to embrace life with courage and conviction.
Told with unflinching honesty by her mother, Misty Bernall, Cassie's story is "a profoundly human story that should be read by every parent and every teenager" (New York Post).

Factually incorrect but still has some meaning........2007-08-24
Because I'm in school to study some form of criminology, I started to research the Columbine shooting about 2 months ago. Having read roughly 500 pages of the Columbine Report (which is basically an 11,000 page report containing interviews and such from the teachers and students that were present at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999), I knew that Cassie Bernall was NOT asked the infamous "Do you believe in God?" question so when I saw the title of this book, I was a bit curious as to why Cassie's mother would sort of "cash in" on the rumors/myths surrounding the shooting death of her daughter. I bought the book in hopes that it would answer my question. And here is what I learned.
The truth is (and believe me, I'm not trying to preach about my views on religion... I'm trying to express my views on this book by debunking the Columbine myths that make this book not credible), a girl named Valeen was asked the "Do you believe in God?" question. She at first said no, then said I don't know, then said yes. When asked by Eric Harris why she believed in God, her response was something along the lines of "Because that was how my parents taught me". She was shot but survived. The only thing that was said to Cassie was "peek-a-boo". It is highly disturbing in my opinion that the ignorant public (led on by the media) including, apparently, Cassie's mother (in the book she says "People say that nothing happens without a purpose--that perhaps Cassie was fulfilling a divine plan, or that in standing up for her beliefs, she was being used by God to further His kingdom. At a certain level, I take comfort in these thoughts. They give meaning to what others have called a "senseless" tragedy, and remind me that a life cut short need not to be a wasted life."), attempt to make Cassie's death more admirable than the other 12 innocent victims. If Valeen had not survived, I'm sure that people would disregard the fact that she said "no" at first. Because, apparently, being religious makes one's death more honorable than those who are not religious.
Look, the book isn't written badly. However, the title of the book and the deep inferences that suggest Cassie died because of her religion honestly disgust me. Those who do not know the truth behind her death will be lead to believe that she WAS asked the question, said yes, and ultimately paid the price by losing her life. This book is NOT supposed to be fiction. So to write it the way it was written make parts of the book lies.
That being said, had the book been mainly about the alleged question she was asked and her answer, I would have easily given this book 1 or 2 stars. But because Misty explains everything from the highlights AND the lowlights in Cassie's life (including Cassie's struggles with wanting to murder her parents) and she admits that Cassie would be upset that people are labeling her a martyr, I found myself able to get through the book rather quickly. Further, "She Said Yes" made me think about my own life and what I would want people to remember me for. For that, I chose to give this book 3 stars.
I'd recommend this book if you want to learn more about the Columbine massacre. The average person must know, however, that although Cassie might've said yes if she was asked the question, the fact is that she wasn't.
She said NOTHING.......2007-07-16
God Bless the Bernall family for their loss of their precious daughter. HOWEVER, this book is based upon a LIE, and terribly, it is a KNOWN LIE. The story is a wonderful one, but, it simply did not happen. The only living direct witness to Miss Bernall's killing, her friend Emily Wyant, discredited the rumor from the beginning, including telling the FBI and the Bernall family. Another indirect witness, Craig Scott (whose sister was viciously gunned down), initially thought he had heard Miss Bernall say something similar to the tale, but later recognized it was actually another voice (see below). However, the tale persists, and makes Christians look foolish, even deceitful, when non-Christians recognize the tale is untrue. The tale was a distorted version of a real event which happened nearby, when one of the killers, Eric Harris, asked another Christian, Valeen Schnurr, whether she believed in God. Despite her affirmative answer, he did NOT kill her. Though not as dramatic & sensational as Miss Bernall's story, such was still miraculous, that a killer would decline to take another victim within point-blank range. We, as followers of Christ, must uphold Truth, not rumor, as the Father of Lies loves it when we do his work, and not Christ's, even for "good" purposes.
Important book.........2007-06-12
I feel that even if it wasn't actually Cassie that said I believe this is still so important to show the humanity of the people that were killed. I definately would NOT say it's a Christian myth that the shootings were at least partly blamed on religion. The boys did ask the girl beside her if she believed in God. And what about Rachel Scott. She was shot after confessing her faith. This was not just about trying to kill jocks or popular kids. These boys hated religion and mocked God and basically were saying if you believe in God let him save you. By letting the other girl survive it's almost their sick game of playing God and deciding who lives and dies. It's a terrorist scare tactic. But Cassie did believe in God and right before she was shot she was praying to God out loud to just let her go home. Then one of the boys pounded on the table she was under said peek a boo and shot her. If you don't believe her killing was motivated by her beliefs read Rachel's Tears and be assured it played a big part in who they killed.
She Said Yes.......2007-05-07
In this book, a girl named Cassie Bernall had got shot at her very own school. But she was only one of the many who were killed . Her mom ,Misty Bernall, wrote this book in memory of her loving daughter. In this book, it tells how Cassie grew up and what memories she has left of her daughter. Her mom also interviewed Cassie's friends and put what memories they had left of her, too. Cassie was always writing notes to her friends about how bad her life was and how she wanted to run away. In this book, she shows the notes she had writen them. But in the last note she ever wrote, she gave to her friend right before she died. It had said that she had belived in God. Right before she got shot, she said the same thing. I look up to Cassie Bernall because she is a strong person who sticks up for what she belives in. I know that if I were in her situation, and they had asked me if I belived in God, I probably would have said, "I don't know" and just cooperated with them. But then again, everything does happen for a reason. So maybe she was meant to go. If I had to rate this book out of 10, it would be a 10. I think this book should be required to read because it is a true life story, and it could happen to anybody. I would also love to see the movie.

A World of Butterflies.......2007-01-11
The pictures in this book are beautiful. The clarity and colors are unbelievable. The explanations of the different butterflies and moths are concise but still informative.
A World of Butterflies.......2007-01-10
Nice book, however the majority of photos are of specimens rather than living butterflies in a natural setting.Text is well thought out. Nice coffee table book.

Audubon for young kids.......2000-09-06
Like the other "first guides" this book on trees is both a study guide and a field guide. The study guide explains the differences between broadleaf and needle trees, seeds and cones of trees, how a forest comes to be, why forest fires can be helpful (some cones are triggered to release seeds only in intense heat) and more. The guide is full color beautiful photos of the most likely to be found trees on the left page, and similar trees with smaller pictures on the right. The right size and content for young kids, not too much info to make it confusing, but enough to get a fire of curiosity going.
Book Description
Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott, two victims of the April 20, 1999, Columbine massacre, were reportedly asked by the two teen gunmen if they believed in God. Both allegedly answered Yes and were killed. This popular story has made Cassie and Rachel into modern-day Christian martyrs, but Watson uncovers a startling fact: Theres simply no evidence this event ever occurred. Meticulously exploring the religious and political use of Cassie and Rachel by Bill Graham and others in the Christian right, Watso demonstrates how this myth has infiltrated into the very culture of evangelical Christianity. Ultimately, Watson brilliantly illustrates that the politics of martyrdom is still politics.
Customer Reviews:
disrespectful to the parents of the victims..........2006-02-23
I can not comprehend Mr. Watson's intentions in writing this book. Although I disagree with the parents of the Columbine victims who believe that more gun laws will prevent further school violence, I respect their opinion and would not dare insult them in a way that this author insults those parents with Christian beliefs.
Not once does this author offer solid evidence that the Rachel and Cassie accounts never happened. He even goes so far as to quote law that a jury must follow in defining "proof" because it is so lacking in this book that the author can only be too aware of it. He insults the victims and their families by calling into question their stories, essentially calling them liars, based only on his own speculation. With the mass of confusion in the library that day, the Cassie story will always be debated, yet again, Mr. Watson offers no new evidence. As for Rachel Scott's story: the following text is an excerpt from page 151 of No Easy Answers, The Truth Behind Death At Columbine by Brooks Brown and Rob Merritt. "After he got the breathing tube out, he (Castaldo) was crying and upset, telling me through sobs how they taunted her (Rachel Scott) and teased her about God," Castaldo's mother Connie Michalek, told the Denver Rocky Mountain News on April 21, 2000. Mr. Watson actually explores the idea that she was being less than truthful with what Richard said in the hospital that day!
It is the opinion of this reader that if an author wishes to make the accusations that he does, he should bring new and compelling evidence to the table. This book offers no new insight into the Columbine tragedy. The information he cites as evidence has been around for years, and is available to anyone with internet access or a library card.
Telling Book.......2006-01-04
I read this book after reading "She Said Yes," by the Bernall family. I simply cannot see how the public will accept much of the information that the Bernall family provides for Cassie's death. What I feel is that a religious community has entangled this issue with a social agenda. Justin Watson flatly disproves or casts doubt on claims that the media takes for granted. For that, you should read his book.
As a book, Martyrs of Columbine is very readable and thorough. Although at times, Justin Watson seems to insert his personal opinion (especially in a chapter about the media's treatment of the event), his commentary is logical and is usually quite revealing of the politics in the American religious movement.
Big disapointment.......2004-07-04
I was very disapointed in the book.Basicly the writer took bits and pieces from books written by others, twisted their words and put his own spin on it.It repeats itself over and over being so repetative I had to put it down. There are good books out there written by people who were there.I suggest you take a look at those.I read many good one's but this book wasnt in that catagory.
A Thoughtful Examination of the Columbine Martyr Stories.......2003-01-27
Watson's book belongs in the collection of anyone interested in what happened at Columbine and why it happened. Rather than trying to discuss all of the issues that swirl around this event, the author concentrates on the "Do you believe in God?" stories associated with victims Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott. More than simply trying to determine whether these stories are true - he doesn't think they are -- he examines how and why these stories took on a wider cultural and political significance. Particularly interesting is how these "martyrs" got used to advance some of the pet causes of the Religious Right, such as getting prayer back in public schools. While those who continue to believe Cassie and Rachel really were martyred will dislike Watson's conclusions, it is hard to see how they could argue with his thorough and thoughtful discussion.
Great Book That Looks Into The Controversies Of Columbine.......2003-01-16
I read this book not too long ago and I think that it's a great book that looks into some of the controversies of Columbine(i.e. whether Rachel Scott was mentioned in the "Basement Tapes" or not, whether Cassie Bernall was asked whether she believed in God or wehther it was another person[who survived]).
From all I've learned about what happened, I'm very skeptical that the Rachel and Cassie stories are true.
I think that it's a rush to judgement to say that certain stroies are true(especially when there is evidence that suggest otherwise)and I think that the main lesson of this book is that "don't take things at face value".

A Fun Interesting Book! .......2007-10-15
This is another great alphabet book by Jerry Pallota. Who else could make an alphabet book series more interesting than he could? I learn something new everytime.
The Butterfly Alphabet Book.......2001-06-11
Nature's way of meditation beautifully illustrated in the Butterfly Alphabet Book. Perfectly informative for children of all ages. The illustrations are so touchingly created to be stared at for hours...when you cannot find a real butterfly, this is the book to read.
Facts and pictures about butterflies using the alphabet.......1998-10-07
A wonderful way to learn the alphabet is using nature to represent each letter. Jerry Pallotta has offered yet another text with this format to add to his previous fifteen Nature Alphabet Books. This time, Pallotta marches out different species of butterflies for each letter, from "A is for Apollo" through "Z is for Zephyr Metalmark." The text on each page invites children to pour over pictures of butterflies while associating each butterfly with its name. Readers must look closely to discover hidden characteristics, hunting , for example, to find the poodle face on the "Dogface" butterfly's wings. Realistic, colorful pictures display each butterfly as if momentarily suspended before a reader who dares not breath for fear of frightening the creature away. The older butterfly guru can learn new information about butterflies, where each lives, and a fact about each-the Magdalene Alphine lives high in the mountains and has black wings that absorb sunlight and keep it warm. For young elementary children, Jerry Pallotta intertwines reading and learning as he provides pictures and information about butterflies from all parts of the world while teaching the alphabet.

solid reprint of a tale of star-crossed lovers.......2003-08-05
Her parents died when Jeanine was young. Her bossy Uncle Fred Hunter the local sheriff raised her. By 1901, Jeanine was curator of the Duluth Art Museum, did lectures on local in Minnesota art, had books published and owned her own house yet Fred still tried to order her about. Now Jeanine wants to write a book about the Chippewas starting with a visit to the former owner of her house Judith McMahon, who married a tribe member. Fred tells her to avoid the savages before leaving. His Deputy Cameron Tyner stays behind allegedly to keep Jeanine from bolting, but instead informs her he plans to teach her life's secrets.
Jeanine escapes, but soon becomes a prisoner again of Chief Lone Wolf a Chippewa with a vow of vengeance made to his mother involving chiefs and white female brides. As Jeanine and Lone Wolf begin to fall in love, both must deal with prejudicial relatives and an odious Cameron who has other plans for the artistic niece of his boss.
She may change the century and the locale, yet when it comes to the Savage world of Cassie Edwards, the theme remains the same. This well written reprint of a 1990s novel is a solid tale of star-crossed lovers dealing with bias and animosity that threatens to destroy their love. The lead couple is a delightful pair as both have strong ethics to help them survive the maelstrom their relationship causes. The secondary characters are balanced with counterweights between the Indian and white sides such as Fred and Lone Wolf's mom having similar traits. Still Cassie Edwards' fans will welcome the splendor of a fine tale.

The best thing about this book was the cover!.......2007-04-23
I found the dialogue awful. Horrible plot. No depth of characters. UGH Christa says "Tall Cloud" wirh almost every sentence. The differences were huge and I didn't see how they ever got together without the ability to communicate.
delightful reprint.......2007-02-11
The Martin family patriarch heard the rumors that riches can be made in the Northwest. He takes his wife and their two children Christa and David and heads to the Pacific leaving their comfortable Boston home behind in his quest for wealth. However, the trek across the country proves arduous to the older Martins as both parents die from a cholera epidemic leaving their offspring with nothing except a cabin.
David realizes his only real asset is his beautiful sister. He decides to sell her to the highest bidder, a person older than her parents were when they died. Christa rejects his argument that marriage to a wealthy man will keep both them out of poverty. She insists she will marry for love only. She thinks she has found it when she sees Suquamish Chief Tall Cloud; he feels she is his destiny. However, David will do anything to prevent his sibling from marrying a heathen instead of his choice and Tall Cloud has an enemy who sees Christa as the pawn to destroy him.
Though there have been a zillion "Savage" books with the same cookie cutter theme since this was released in the 1980s, SAVAGE HEART remains one of the best. The story line as almost always in a Cassie Edwards novel stars ethical individuals falling in a taboo love as an Indian chief and a white woman is an unacceptable relationship especially in her society. Her brother is the villain in this tale as he wants to sell her though he rationalizes that it is for Christa's well-being. Fans of Ms. Edwards will enjoy this delightful reprint.

Great story from Cassie.......2004-05-10
I have read many of Cassie Edward's books, and this one is my favourites, and the book that made me want to buy more of her books. It is funny, touching and makes you want to read it again and again. However, I must say that her books published in the 2000s are not as good as the books that were published at almost the same time as Savage Heart. Seems like she runs out of ideas...I still love Cassie and hope she will write more great books again, like before...
As GREAT as the rest of her Savage books!.......2001-07-13
With the kind of brilliant writing that Cassie Edwards always shows her readers, this book is thrilling with a wonderful story of 2 people, total opposites, struggling to find love together. I overslept many mornings because I didn't want to put it down until the wee hours of the morning! This is a book you will certainly enjoy, just like the others she's written!!!

Fate Works In Strange Ways!.......2002-11-23
Holly Wintizer disguises herself as a bounty hunter to find her stepfather, Rudolph, who killed her mother with strychnine. She decides to hunt Jake Two Moons in Montana to pay her fare, and get her revenge on her stepfather. On her trip, she comes across Winter Raven who is hunting for his twin brother to bring him home. He tries to convince her to let his brother go free, and be punished only by The Gros Ventres. Holly must make a pressing decision about whether or not this brother of a murderer can be trusted.
Repetitious and Predictable..........2002-09-13
I do not like to be harsh when it comes to writing, but I have to say, this was below standard (in my opinion). I was a fan of her writing when I was starting out reading romance over 13 years ago and decided to pick up another from her thinking I would enjoy it, but I was surprised.
The writing was repetitious and very predictable. She repeated what the character was thinking and doing over and over, almost like she was trying to fill space? The plot was jumbled and disorganized.
One minute the main character is asking to stay with friends after her mother's death and then the very next moment she has a half-baked idea to become a bounty hunter and rides off into the sunset.
The getting together of the two main characters was seen from a mile away and held no element of surprise to the reader. The premise could've been great, but too many inconsistencies got in the way and I was left many times shaking my head.
If you want a boring romance where the heroine hasn't got much of a brain and the hero is the 'I will save you even thohjgh you are kinda dumb' type of guy, then this is it, but if you're looking for a more intelligent and mature read, look elsewhere.
After Holly Winitizer's mother died from mysterious causes, she embarks on a journey to find the truth. Becoming a bounty hunter, she seeks out her prize, Jake Two Moons and goes into Montana only to find his twin brother Winter Raven instead who is also seeking him.
Together they forge a pact to find Jake, for different reasons. They should be enemies, but Raven can't deny the fact that he likes Holly and sees her goodness. Holly cannot believe Jake and Raven are twins, they are like night and day.
Crossing mountains and rivers to find justice and family, they rely on each other and try to find peach and love.

THIS IS ONE OF CASSIE'S BEST YET,I HAVE ALL OF HER COLLECTION OF THE SAVAGE SERIES & MORE OF HER BOOKS THIS IS THE LEAGE WITH "SILVER WING" LOVE THAT BOOK, ALSO "WINTER RAVEN" IS SUPER I LOVE IT . I THINK THAT HOLLY IS VERY COURAGES TO GO OUT BOUNTY HUNTING,IT IS SO ROMANTIC WHEN SHE MEETS UP WITH WINTER RAVEN THEIR LOVE IS SO GRAND,IT IS A PITY THAT HIS BROTHER,"JAKE TWO MOONS" DIE BECAUSE I THINK HE WAS REALY SORRY FOR GOING AGAINST THE TRADITION OF HIS TRIBE,ON THE OTHER HAND HOLLY'S STEP FATHER NOW THERE IS A ROTTEN APPLE.TO SAY THE LEAST.WELL ALL GO THINGS COME TO AN END.I LOVE THIS BOOK AND IF YOU LIKE THE WAY CASSIE EDWARDS WRITE,THEN YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK.I CAN HARDLY WAIT FOR ANOTHER OF HER BOOKS TO COME OUT, COME ON CASSIE I ALREADY STARTING TO COUNT THE MONTHS TILL YOUR NEXT BOOK COME OUT. GOOD WRITTING.
One of her better books.......2000-12-17
In 1859 Kansas City, Holly Wintizer learns that her suspicions about her stepfather Rudolph Anderson killing her beloved mother is true. The vile Rudolph even sold the Wintizer home while his wife was being buried. Holly vows to bring Rudolph to justice.
WINTER RAVEN is an exciting Americana romance due to its electrifying lead characters. The story line has an environmental theme that adds to the overall action-packed tale. Strong secondary players enhance the book although Rudolph's actions seem extreme. Still, Cassie Edwards' novel belongs to Holly and Winter Raven as their need for one another relies on the belief that they belong together and not betray one another.

The Beginning.......2007-02-24
I really enjoyed reading this book, but I do have to say the first couple of chapters I thought were really far out there. I almost put the book down but I continued reading and then I finaly got into the book and I couldn't put the book down. I really like Cassie Edward books because of the time and effort she puts into her books with detail and research. I now own five of her books and I am going to continue buying more of her Indian Romance Novels.
Wonderful Raed.......2006-01-09
I really enjoyed this book and the some what different writing style for Cassie Edwards. The main reason I enjoyed this book so much is because it doesn't follow the typical mold of her writing style. It gives a look at both Native American religion and White religon and how they can be similar but so different. Wonderful Read.
Savage Grace.......2000-05-22
Although I really enjoy Cassie Edwards, this was not my favorite of hers. I did like this book, as I have all the books I have read by Cassie Edwards. I just had a problem with the story line. The idea of Shayless coming back to earth as an Angel, instantly falling in love and then being granted another chance on earth, was a bit much. Once I got past all that, I did enjoy the book. Cassie Edwards can tell a tale that keeps the pages turning. I do enjoy how the bad guys always seem to get it in the end.
WONDERFUL! She's still got it!.......2000-05-18
Spellbinding! Captivating! Wonderful display of different religions and practices. I love the way she put God in play with Shaylee and the fact that she had to learn to forgive to find her child. Then Standing Wolf had to learn to forgive wrong doers and learned to believe that there was God and not just a Great Spirit. I love the way the story line displayed the loving way that tribes would accept not only members of other tribes but whites as well. Whether they be child or adult, male or female. Standing Wolf accepting not only a white son but also a enemies son was wonderful and true of nature of the Cherokees. Thank you Cassie for another wonderful book that took all of 7 hours to read because I couldn't put it down.

gritty, true, heart-wrenching... .......2007-05-30
Randy Sutton compiles a collection of true cop stories that will leave you reeling. Devoid of any gooey sentiment but true to the street beat that these cops work. At times scary, depressing, uplifting and heroic these cops tell a story of sacrifice, family and the failure of society. Not an easy book to get through at times but highly recommended.
The Truth Behind the Badge!.......2006-08-28
Randy Sutton takes the reader for a wild ride through the world of a street cop. I laughed and cried through this entire book! As a street cop in Las Vegas Randy Sutton has been there and done that and lets the reader see what goes on behind that badge. The heartbreaks and elation, the ups and the downs and the pride he himself carries on every call.
If you like cops, read this book! If you don't like cops, read this book! Randy reminds us that the street cop has a heart just like we do and while they often are able to hide their true feelings, they have those feelings just as we do. Randy has shown us the REAL feelings street cops have and have to deal with.
Insightful!.......2005-12-30
Sgt. Sutton is on the Las Vegas P.D., but his work is not amid the neon lights but the homes and dreams of its less than affluent citizens. The book consists of a series of short stories of his life on the job.
Suicides, domestic violence by a son against his mother (who then malevolently accuses Sutton of throwing her son out the window to his death), juveniles that murder a grandmother trying to arrange quiet so her grandchildren can sleep, a juvenile that beats two old people - gets a slap on the wrist - and then kills another and is given life in prison like his father, stopping to help a little girl cross the street, a partner killed - the list goes on and on.
Each of these tragedies takes its toll - eventually he asks for a desk job to avoid anymore. Turns out twice as many cops die of suicide (about double the national rate) as are killed on the job.
"A Cop's Life" helps the reader appreciate the contribution made by police, and to emphasize with the emotions they must internalize as they go through life.
Great Book!.......2005-09-24
This is the second book that i have read by this author. A Cop's life brings you into the world of how cops do their job on a daily basis.
THIS COP CAN WRITE!.......2005-08-02
I served as a Las Vegas cop for thirty years, and I can tell you, Sgt. Sutton got it right. This is a gritty book that episodically depicts the author's experiences as a rookie city cop in New Jersey and as a veteran officer in Las Vegas--one of America's toughest cities to police. He doesn't just take us on patrol with him, he takes us into the dark corners of his mind and tells us how his street experiences affect him. This is not a summer book for escapist reading at the beach; it is a dark look at a good cop's life on the street. If you have ever worn a badge, you'll recognize a lot of yourself in these stories. If you are a "civilian," you will get an in-depth look at the grim reality of police work and the emotional toll it can take on the men and women behind the badge.
