Enjoyable AND sharp........2007-10-11
In her novels Jill Nelson has a way of simplifying some of the most prickly issues Christians face today. One of my favorite scenes in her latest novel, The Reluctant Runaway, involves the heroine, Desiree Jacobs and her Native American kidnapper, Pete Cheama, a member of the Zuni tribe. Pete has made plenty of bad choices in his life, and he ultimately blames his mistakes on Christians, whose system "was forced upon [his] people centuries ago and has made [their] spirits weak and [their] minds confused." No Christian wants to feel her faith has weakened or confused anyone, so sometimes we refrain from even discussing Christianity. But Desiree merely responds, "Jesus is not an oppressor." Right there, concisely--the difference between true Christianity and any faith that demands, rather than invites.
Nelson's novel is a fun read, with plenty of suspense and action (and some clever romance, to boot). You could enjoy the entire reading experience without stopping to focus on the choice tidbits about faith with which she occasionally peppers the story. But those tidbits deepen the novel and make it stay with you well after you finish the last page. I'd recommend Reluctant Runaway for teen-through-adult readers.
Another gripping tale by Jill Nelson.......2007-07-03
In this engaging sequel to Reluctant Burglar, museum security expert Desiree Jacobs, once again becomes drawn into a mystery when Max's niece goes missing. Could her disappearance have anything to do with Tony's organized crime case? As their romance heats up, so does the trail that leads to stolen artifacts, leading them both to the New Mexico dessert. They must learn to trust God, not only with their surmounting dangers, but with their romance. Is it possible that this new religious cult, is at the center of these mysteries?
As in Reluctant Burglar, Jill Nelson has once again masterfully weaved a tale of suspense and drama while demonstrating the power of faith to overcome the worst of our fears and obstacles. As the romance develops between Desiree and Tony, an FBI agent, the reader is shown the hand of God in even this, our most intimate of human relationships. Is it possible for these two, an over-protective cop and an independent, sometimes risk-taker security expert, to find a peaceful coexistence in which their love can blossom?
Although the plot can be read independently from the book's forerunner, Reluctant Runaway, has achieved the best of sequel writing. Not only has the author improved on her story telling techniques, but has added depth and challenge to an all-ready intriguing story. Very enjoyable read.
Don't "Runaway" from this book! =).......2007-06-26
Okay, cheesy title for this review, I know - but guys, this was a super fun read! I liked it even better than the first in this series, and I didn't think that would happen! Jill Nelson has somehow managed to create a book that is at the same time fun and serious, intense and light, funny and shocking...what a combo! My favorite part of Jill's books are by far the characters - so realistic. They crack me up, yet two pages later, they have me tearing up.
Job well done, Jill.
As for the rest of you - check out this series ASAP! You won't regret it!
Don't Be Reluctant!.......2007-06-21
Security expert Desiree Jacobs' friend and business associate Maxine has a problem. Max's niece is missing. Kidnapping victim or a runaway? No one knows, but it seems everyone has an opinion. The niece also works for a museum that was recently robbed of priceless items. Right before the niece's disappearance. Now things are getting worse. Desi has to step in and help. But wait! She's promised her FBI boyfriend Tony that she won't get involved in such things anymore. But she has to, right? This is her friend we're talking about. And when Desi and Tony's individual cases collide sparks aplenty fly.
If you'll pardon the obvious pun, I was reluctant to read this novel which is book two in the series. See, I'm ashamed to say I hadn't read book one. And Jill Nelson is my pal. Oh I'd read a chapter of book one that was posted to her website once. That was enough to convince me she was a good writer. I knew that. I've been swamped with books that I had to read. It seems there's never an end sometimes. Oh the horrors! :-)
The opportunity came for me to read book two, Reluctant Runaway. As a member of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance we're plugging this novel this week. I received a copy of it to read a review. So glad I did. And the fact that it was the second in a series never tripped me up. Jill's sprinkles enough backstory to set you at ease with the characters, all the while taking you on a thrill ride like no theme park you've ever been to.
It was a pleasure to read this novel. Jill's writing is tight and easy to read. Her characters are engaging and endearing. And the cliff hangers at some of the chapters! Shesh! I was already to put the book down for a while at one point to do some other things and then a gun went off at the end of the chapter. Ack! Who's dead? I couldn't stop reading there. Nuh uh. :-)
Now I'm looking forward to going back in time and reading book one in the To Catch A Thief series, Reluctant Burglar. And then there's the upcoming book three, Reluctant Smuggler.
Can't wait!
Entertaining Who Done What..........2007-06-20
Part action packed who-done-what and part romantic suspense, I found myself sucked into Reluctant Runaway. I didn't meet the crime fighting duo of Desi and Tony in the Reluctant Burglar but Nelson did a great job at sharing enough details of the first book without oversharing and intruding on the story at hand.
Several amusing scenes interspersed with cliffhangers made the read roller coasty. Forgiveness is a huge spiritual theme as is discernment and the danger of tiny shifts in the Gospel message.
If you enjoyed book one in the series, you're going to want to get your hands on Reluctant Runaway as soon as possible. If you like romantic suspense, strong female leads and sassy talk -- you'll likely enjoy this novel.

Four fun historical romances & introduction of new author!.......2004-03-28
Train robberies send four female Pinkerton agents undercover to Colorado on a quest for criminal and social justice.
"Tangled Threads." Ruth goes on the offensive after train robbers victimize her the day she arrives. Spurred to prove herself, she barrels past obvious clues in search of the obscure, but finds reasons to fraternize with a mine owner charmingly reminiscent of Bret Maverick with an A-type personality. Her inner conflict is so strong, I'd have enjoyed stronger motivations for the internal and romantic resolutions; Ms. Cox's ending felt as if it took a leap.
"Rescuing Sydney." Sydney falls off a train and into jail alongside a family friend. John, a minister, embodies the faith she turned away from and a ripening love that refuses to be ignored. Her internal growth is realistically layered, and I enjoyed her intelligent pursuit of the robbers. The well-balanced description grounds the reader in the scenes without interrupting the flow. This is an excellent inspirational romance debut by experienced writer Lisa Harris.
"Skirted Clues." Equinophobia upsets Moment's single-eyed investigation of a hermit rancher. Rescued by her prime suspect, she decides there's more to Brady than a troubling connection to the crimes. It'll take unraveling her own past to find out. I'd have enjoyed watching more of his internal growth occur onstage, but Ms. Mills' heroine has some strongly sympathetic moments.
"Victorious." Victoria butts heads with fellow agent Gus in her quest to reopen the case and snare the real mastermind. He suspects her real goal is capturing the local banker as a husband. She just might-if she doesn't fall in love with Gus first. I disliked Gus in the earlier stories, but Ms. Y'Barbo maximizes his point-of-view scenes, thoroughly winning me over. She has a gift for sizzling sexual tension, igniting sparks even in the short novella length.
These stories aren't complex who-done-its, but lighthearted reads easily finished in single sittings. The book is worth getting for Lisa Harris' debut alone, but she's surrounded in this anthology by other solid authors who make the reading experience as a whole quite enjoyable.
Light-hearted, Charming Tales.......2004-03-22
In this four story novella, TO CATCH A THIEF, authors Carol Cox, Lisa Harris, DiAnn Mills, and Kathleen Y'Barbo, create a delightful, interwoven tale of romance and mystery. These four female detectives are out to prove they have what it takes to be real-life detectives, but along the way begin to wonder if they'll forever be left to mend seams or mind stores. Then there is that little complication of romance, which springs up to complicate their missions. Will they find the culprits who've been robbing trains? Will they ever convince their male counterparts that they are just as good as any man at their jobs? Can love find its way into their hearts?
The third story, SKIRTED CLUES by DiAnn Mills, shows the escapades and misunderstandings between Moment Alexander and Brady Miller - a humorous, enjoyable tale. The interactions between these characters kept me turning pages. All of the tales were light-hearted, charming romances. You'll find TO CATCH A THIEF just what you're looking for. Don't miss it!
Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear.......2004-02-22
To Catch a Thief is an enjoyable anthology of stories seamlessly woven together as one, despite the fact that different authors wrote them. Each of the four 1890s heroines pioneers new territory both out West and in jobs for women of their time. As I read about these gallant Pinkerton women, I was flooded with memories of early Western movies and television, in which the viewer felt safe, knowing that the good guys - and gals, would always win. In this anthology, the reader returns "to those thrilling days of yesteryear," when The Lone Ranger, Annie Oakley, Cheyenne, or Sugarfoot rode in to save the day. One of the best features of the anthology is that not all of the heroes are drop-dead gorgeous, but they are strong men of God, a far more enduring characteristic.
To Catch a Thief is a terrific read, not only taking us on an exciting adventure, but also showing true to history how many godly men and women settled the American West.
Pick this one up!.......2004-02-07
You will really enjoy this set of four novellas, which reads nicely as one long book, but it's short enough to catch a bit on your lunch break. These 4 savvy Pinkerton agents are sent to Windmere Falls, Colorado, to assist a male Pinkerton agent who's investigating a series of train robberies. He's totally unprepared for his new "helpers." Best of all, these 4 different ladies manage to round up this band of bad guys. You will laugh out loud at some of the fun banter between characters, and bite your nails at some of the "cliffhangers." All four of these writers did a nice job a tying up each story.
To CATCH A THEIF.......2004-01-15
I have read analogies but nothing compared TO CATCH A THIEF. It is written in an easy to read format and the large print is easy on the eyes. Although this analogy contains four novellas written by Carol Cox, Lisa Harris, DiAnn Mills and Kathleen Y'Barbo this one is written more like a novel.
The prologue sets the story in 1890 of four young women who worked for the Chicago Pinkerton Detective Agency. The women received their first assignment that took them to Colorado. Each novella unfolds the story of mystery and intrigue as the Pinkerton detectives catches the criminals and brought them to justice.
My favorite character in TO CATCH A THEIF was Moment Alexander. She leaped off the pages written by DiAnn Mills in Skirted Clues. Miss Alexander was raised with nine brothers. She was gusty and did not let her fear of horses stop her from catching the criminals.
If you enjoy mystery, romance and strong-minded women, I highly recommend this analogy TO CATCH A Thief.

The Art of Art Thievery
When Hiram Jacobs is murdered, the responsibility for his internationally renowned security company falls upon his daughter, Desiree. But a container full of stolen paintings screams the ugly truthâthat her father was a thief. Option A: Turn the goods over to the law, disgrace her father’s name, destroy their business, put people out of jobs, and embarrass international museums with the fact that they have been displaying clever forgeries. Option B: Surrender the art to the bad guys. But then she becomes an unwilling accomplice to the thieves, and her father’s murderer would walk free. Worse, a death threat warns her not to cooperate with federal agents. Can she trust God to guide her down the right path when no option seems rightâ¦let alone safe?
Art stole her heartâ¦
Now can she return the favor?
If Desiree Jacobs knows anything, it’s art. Her father, whose security company is internationally renowned, taught her everything he knew. Most of all, he taught her about honor. Integrity. Faith. So surely God will forgive her for despising the one man determined to destroy her father’s good name?
Special Agent Tony Lucano knows Hiram Jacobs is an art thief. But what he can’t figure out is Desiree. Is she the innocent victimâ¦or a clever accomplice?
Then Hiram is murdered. And along with his company, he leaves Desiree a hidden container full of stolen paintings. But she can’t admit her father was a thief! That would destroy their business, put people out of jobs, and embarrass international museums that have been displaying clever forgeries. No, she must find out why her honest father would turn criminal. And she must return the priceless art to the rightful owners without their knowledge. Even if it means facing down a ring of cutthroat art thievesâ¦or accepting help from the man she most distrusts.

Story Behind the Book
âOne night I woke up, my whole body tense, after dreaming that a woman had snuck into a home in the middle of the night to return a genuine painting that had been stolen and replaced by a clever forgery. I knew little about her except that she was an expert at what she did, and if she was caught, disaster would follow. My imagination began to play with that nugget. I love stories where people risk much to do the right thing, and I feel sick whenever I hear of art or antiquities desecrated or stolen. Putting these elements together into a tale of intrigueâwith a sassy heroine and an intense heroâcame easily. I believe that capturing the imagination with a gripping story makes a most effective vehicle to convey thought-provoking realities.â

Best Debut Novel Ever!.......2007-10-18
Stolen art...murder...intrigue...terrorists...and love??? I've never met Jill Elizabeth Nelson, and before receiving her debut novel, The Reluctant Burglar, I knew nothing about her. Immediately upon receiving the book I knew this was going to be interesting. If I had been in the bookstore, the cover alone would have sold the book. Very cool, indeed!
Desiree Jacobs knows art because her father, Hiram Jacobs taught her everything he knows. Hiram also taught his daughter about honor, integrity, and faith. She loves and admires her father greatly.
But there's a problem...Special Agent Tony Lucano knows Hiram Jacobs is an art thief. He isn't sure about Desiree. She could be an innocent victim or a cunning accomplice.
The book opens with Desiree on one of her many escapes. See Desi's company doesn't just provide security for the art, she goes undercover, sometimes as an old woman, a young boy, anything she needs to do to see if she can steal the costly art pieces. If she can't break in then she knows the art is safe. Most of the time she's able to slip through the security cracks and leave investors shocked at their inept security. Think Sidney Briscoe from Alias. Desi has that kind of spunk and energy about her.
Not long after the beginning, Desi learns her father has been murdered. If the special agent is to be believed, her father was a thief. Desi can't reconcile that to the man she loved. Thus starting her confusing and dangerous whirlwind adventure to prove her father's innocence.
Where the author takes us on the journey is amazing. She crafted so many turns and twists with this plot that I was unable to put the book down. Albeit a late night, I devoured it in one setting.
As the book progresses, Jacobs and Lucano develop a friendship that has sparks and chemistry to boot. The reader is both cheering them on and worried about how they could ever be on the same side. This book was a rare treat. Not many debut novels are this well written, well-crafted and just plain good! I loved the book so much I emailed the author and told her what a great job she'd done. I also mentioned how much I'd love to see these characters on television. They were so real I already felt like they lived and breathed, and would love to see them on a weekly basis. ;)
Reluctant Burglar (To Catch a Thief Series #1)
Great book all around.......2007-08-20
Desiree Jacobs schooled her breathing as she handed her ID to the museum guard. Relax. . .just relax. This guy has no idea what you are up to.
And so begins line one, chapter one, in book one of the To Catch a Thief Series. Reluctant Burglar, the spin-tingling, nail-chewing debut novel by Jill Elizabeth Nelson throws us into the world of Desiree Jacobs. A world that suddenly spins out of control when she learns of her father's murder.
Add to the whirlwind Tony Lucano, a Special Agent with the FBI who's hot on the trail of an art thief who he suspects is Desiree's father. Toss in hidden codes, kidnaping, a hard case of trust, and international art thieves. The events that follow throw Desiree into a cat and mouse game that will have readers on the edge of their seats.
But inside this tornado of events, both Desiree and Tony learn that only God can calm their hearts and give them direction in a fast-paced world.
Jill Nelson does an excellent job of making real-to-life characters while giving us an exciting read and eager anticipation for Book #2 and #3 in the To Catch A Thief series.

A Masterpiece ..........2007-04-08
Desiree Jacobs' beloved father has been murdered, but the beautiful museum security expert has little time to wallow in her sorrow. Handsome FBI agent Tony Lucano is set on proving her deceased father an art thief. Desiree is every bit as determined to prove his innocence.
But the further she delves into her father's affairs, the more it looks like the agent could be right - especially when her father's secret codes lead her to a warehouse container full of stolen paintings. Determined to avoid further sullying of her father's name, Desiree sets out to secretly return the priceless pieces of art.
Why would a man of integrity like Hiram Jacobs be involved in an art theft ring? Desiree means to find out, but will her probing open a Pandora's Box of secrets she'd rather not know? Danger lurks around every corner, and just when she thinks things can get no worse, suspicion falls on the person closest to her. Now she's forced to turn to her nemesis -FBI guy Lucano - for assistance and protection.
Reluctant Burglar is a masterpiece of intrigue and romance. This tightly written tale, spiced with the author's special brand of humor, keeps the reader flipping those pages until the stunning finale comes hurtling in right out of left field. A genuine work of art...
The plot drives this novel from start to finish.......2007-03-22
If you love traditional romances spiced with an action plot that twists and turns, you'll love Reluctant Burglar by Jill Elizabeth Nelson. The opening chapters are filled with tumultuous changes in the life of Desiree Jacobs. As partner with her father in HJ Securities, a firm that specializes in providing top notch security for art galleries, museums, private clients, etc., Desiree is tasked with finding the weak link in their security systems so that HJ Securities can offer better protection.
Desiree takes the unorthodox route of stealing a prized piece of art then returning it to the owner to demonstrate the weak link. Couple this adventurous job with a father who's accused of art theft, murdered in his bed, and an attempt to do the same to Desiree, interest and you have a suspense tale that keeps you reading. Tack on a desirable FBI agent Tony Lucano, who no matter how much he denies it, is drawn to Desiree and you have romance that equals the suspense.
The plot drives this novel from start to finish with surprises all along the way. Just when you think nothing else will surprise you, Nelson tosses in another one to keep you reading. If you're not a plot kind of person but are in this book for the romance only, the developing relationship between Desiree and agent Tony Lucano is strong enough to fulfill that need as well. As a bonus, you'll also receive an interesting insight into the world of art iniquities.
Art Smart.......2007-03-05
Desiree Jacobs works as an art security adviser that has been trained in the ways of an art thief by her father. She knows everything about how to get around security systems in museums and how to tell a genuine piece of art from a fake. Then she gets the news that her father has been murdered and he has left behind to her a container full of stolen paintings. Desiree needs to return the paintings to their rightful owners before anyone notices. Meanwhile special agent Tony Lucano is hot on Desiree's trail, trying to find out what her plans really are. They have a sketchy relationship where he doesn't trust Desiree and she can't stand him. However the two will have to set aside their differences to find out who her father's murderer is and to stop the art thieves.
I think that Desiree had an awesome job. I really liked Desiree's ability to disguise herself enough to fool people for her job. I enjoyed the scene where she almost got caught even though the room she was in was almost impossible to get out of. I know that the guy on the cover is supposed to be Tony but for some reason I kept picturing Tony Almeida from 24. He just suited better to me what Tony would look like. Desiree's and Tony's relationship starts off annoying at first because no matter what she does he doesn't trust her. Eventually he realizes her true character, it was just frustrating that he had already prejudged her. I kept thinking about the Da Vinci Code while reading the book because of the talk about paintings and art museums. And I also recalled an episode of Magnum PI where there is a father/daughter art thief duo just like in this book. While I enjoyed the book, I felt that some parts dragged a little. To me the middle part of the story didn't grab my attention the way the first part or the end did. I still enjoyed reading this book though. There were twists that I didn't see coming and lots of suspense. I also have a new respect for art after learning so much about it in this book. I'll be looking forward to the next one in the series.

Once again author Sherryl Woods pens a heart-touching romance in the third book of her miniseries The Calamity Janes. With her characteristic warmth and gentleness, Woods' characters come alive with the ambiguities and ethical dilemmas that make them both imperfect and believable. While the plot slows at times to bring in the characters from the other books in this series, readers who have delighted in this wonderful series will enjoy the quick asides. TO CATCH A THIEF is a lively and entertaining read, coming recommended.
