Book Description

The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-10-18

There are two camps of haters of this book. The first are those who feel that Grogan and his wife were terrible owners.

I belong to the other hater camp. I thought this book was boring and tedious. I have a dog. My dog dribbles water on the floor when she drinks. Your dog does too? What a coincidence! Hey, my kids push Cheerios off their high chair tray to our dog too! Hilarity! "Our front door had a small oblong window at eye level, four inches wide by eight inches long." Gripping. This book is filled with cliches and factiods. One chapter starts, "You don't give birth to your first child every day...." And here's a well formulated sentence: "Jenny began working the phone from her hospital bed, and a couple of days later my sweet, dear aunt Anita, a retired nurse who had come to America from Ireland as a teenager and now lived across the state from us, magically appeared, suitcase in hand, and cheerfully went about restoring order." You get the idea.

A final and tiny complaint: This couple only decides to move their small sons out of their neighborhood because their house is too small, and not because of all the MURDERS! But maybe I'm just overprotective.

If I wasn't reading this for book club, I would have stopped after Chapter 2.

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch canine story.......2007-10-14

I just finished the best dog book I've ever read! No kidding. I often laughed out loud ) and eventually cried silently . John and Jenny are beginning their married life together and they introduce a wggly furball of a yellow Labrador retriever puppy into their wedded bliss. "Life and love with world's worst dog." says the book jacket. Maybe that's why Marley is expelled two times from obedience school. If you like books about man's best friend, get this book and you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-14

This was an adorable book. I loved reading it and will probably read it again... Such a cute story. This book brings to light what it's like to have a dog, a dog like Marley. I understand the things they went through with Marley, because we have a dog exactly like him. I highly recommend it. You will have a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-10-14

I listened to "Marley and Me" during my commute, and it was excellent. Both the story and John Grogan's narration were terrific, and I highly recommend these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Edition of Marley and Me.......2007-10-11

I bought this edition of 'Marley and Me' to see the extra photographs of Marley and also for John Grogan's newspaper column he wrote after Marley died. I highly recommend this edition to everyone, it truly is a treasure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well Written and Very Comprehensive.......2007-06-26

This is an excellent book for those looking for a simplified approach to retirement funding.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Case Study.......2007-05-12

I enjoy Ray's work. His book walks you through the financial planning process and clearly illustrates how it is done right. The first step of the process is factfinding and educating. The second is suggesting solutions. Ray's mastery of the process shines through and provides enough information to help you get started with your own plan.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone...........2007-04-05

This is an excellent book for the beginner to the more sophisticated person to consider when managing your retirement funds. Ray gives thoughtful insight into the potential investment strategies for three different "buckets of money". The difference in the 3 buckets is the time horizon the funds will be needed and the various amounts of investment risk that could be assumed in each time period.

His plan makes amazing sense and I have utlized it successfully in my personal retirement plan (I am 46 & retired) and my mother's (who is now 70 1/2). I have listened to Ray's business talk show for the past several years and also seen him speak at a free weekend morning seminar in Portland, OR. His personal judgement and that of his "brain trust" is safe, sound and easily followed.

I have purchased this book for myself and multiple family members/friends for their consideration. It has always gotten favorable reviews. I just purchased his newest book, "Ready..Set..Retire: Financial Strategies for the Rest of Your Life". I am anxiously awaiting it's delivery for any new information he has to share!

4 out of 5 stars Finally a simple method.......2007-01-18

Whenever a financial advisor's starts to speak, I yawn intellectually. There are so many products and financial terms that I can't grasp it all. Enter Lucia with a plan so simple that even I can understand it. I loved listening to the "The Ray Lucia Show" and the book did not disappoint me.

"Don't run out of money before you run out of time"

5 out of 5 stars Buckets of Money.......2006-11-05

I love the book. It's packed with solid information in a very easy-to-read format.

5 out of 5 stars The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Comfort Foods: Creating old Favorites with the New Flours.......2007-07-17

The book has so many good recipies! Bette Hagman has great cookbooks for gluten sensitive people.

3 out of 5 stars Looks good, but nutrient counts are way off!!.......2007-07-13

The recipes in this book look really appealing and probably are delicious, BUT . . . the calorie/carb/fat, etc. counts that accompany each recipe are wildly inaccurate. For example, the Featherlight Chiffon Cake shows 170 calories per serving with 160 grams of carbohydrates. At four calories per gram, there couldn't be less than 640 calories per serving!! Her Cream Cheese Pound Cake shows only 5 grams each of carb and protein and 9 grams of fat. This must total about 120 cals per serving, but she lists it as 288 cals. per serving. In fact, almost every recipe I looked at carefully had unreliable numbers attached. Here's hoping the editors correct these errors before going to a second edition.

5 out of 5 stars Gluten, Get out of Dodge!.......2007-05-21

Bette Hagman's books are lifesavers and Godsends and I have them all. She makes the art of cooking gluten free and keeping a gluten free kitchen easy, logical and workable. You don't have to separate the wheat from the chaff - just regard the wheat AS chaff and you are on your way to a gluten free lifestyle!

Cooks who follow Bette's methods do work - you will need several different types of flours to make breads and bread desserts, such as cakes. Be sure to freeze your foods because they won't last long. It is also a good idea to cook in portions so as to prevent food from going bad.

Thanks to Bette, I have learned about hemp bread for celiac disease and for anybody following a gluten/casein free regimen and Teff Flour. There are many good websites out there that can direct you to places where you can buy the foods and equipment you need to start enjoying your gluten/casein free life. Bette Hagman is truly a Food Warden. She has given people that much needed Get Out of Jail Free card to break out of the prison of old eating habits and a Passport to Better and Healthier Living. Cheers to Bette Hagman!

5 out of 5 stars Gluten free muffins and more........2007-04-01

My daughter uses this book daily and says she finds the recipes accessible and tasty. If you need to limit or avoid wheat products this is a good cookbook.

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

While the title How to Be a Domestic Goddess may at first make a modern woman bristle, the book itself is just as likely to inspire the woman who brings home the bacon to start baking cakes. And what's wrong with that? "This isn't a dream," writes British cookery deity Nigella Lawson in her preface. "What's more, it isn't even a nightmare." Lawson--the author of How to Eat, food editor of British Vogue, and star of her own TV cooking show, Nigella Bites--has been suspected of upholding the woman-laboring-in-the-kitchen paradigm, but there are lots of hard-working women out there who derive great satisfaction from cooking, even after a long day at the office. For those women, Lawson, who looks more Elizabeth Hurley than Martha Stewart, is the perfect guide to the wondrous world of baking.

"You know, I'm not a cook-to-impress kind of girl," Lawson says midway through the book, but she must admit there are few things more rewarding than putting a warm homemade pie or fragrant cake on the table--especially after preparing a home-cooked meal. How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking makes just such a reward possible, in fact positively enticing, with its delicious selection of easy-to-make cakes, pies, cookies, breads, even jams, presented in Lawson's chatty, pleasantly glib manner. Turns out, you don't have be a Pierre Hermé to make to-die-for chocolate confections; nor do you have to spend hours "faffing around" with hot pans and jars to have jam at teatime. You just need to try baking once, then again, and next thing you know, you'll be turning out cookies and desserts every chance you get. Many of the recipes are hand-me-downs or adaptations from other sources, be it a favorite cookbook or a restaurant in some far-off region, but all are imbued with Lawson's wit and distinctive touch. Profiteroles, My Way are "monumentally impressively better" than the original, thanks to burnt-sugar custard and toffee sauce. Her Coffee and Walnut Splodge Cookies are "American-style cookies; in other words just dropped onto the baking sheet free-form," and so on.

A sophisticated female alter ego of British mop-top Jamie Oliver, and considerably more sly and comedic than most American gourmets, Nigella is sure to convince more than a few up-and-coming hostesses that baking is indeed women's work. --Rebecca Wright

    Book Description

The trouble with much modern cooking is that the mood it induces in the cook is one of skin-of-the-teeth efficiency, all briskness and little pleasure. Sometimes that's the best we can manage, but at other times we don't want to feel stressed and overstretched, but like a domestic goddess, trailing nutmeggy fumes of baking pie in our languorous wake.... --from How to Be a Domestic Goddess

How to Be a Domestic Goddess is not about being a goddess, but about feeling like one. What this deliciously mouthwatering cookbook demonstrates is that it's not actually hard to bake a pan of muffins or a sponge layer cake, but the appreciation and satisfaction they bring are disproportionately high. Filled with over 220 gorgeously illustrated recipes, this book understands our anxieties, feeds our fantasies, and puts cakes, pies, pastries, preserves, puddings, breads, and cookies back in our own kitchens. The domestic goddess has to maintain her (or his) cool when faced with pastry, of course -- but with Nigella Lawson's guidance, even puff pastry can be pain-free.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-08-28

I am not a baker, but each recipe is clearly explained. Nigella does a good job of letting the reader know what to expect after every step so the possibility of making mistakes are very low. I'm so happy that I chose this as my go-to baking book!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-27

Beautiful photographs, excellent recipes, this book will get used over and over again... The London Cheesecake is the best cheesecake I've ever had.

    5 out of 5 stars What a feast!.......2007-06-28

I bought this book in a hurry one day based solely on the title. I wasn't disappointed. This is the most fun I've ever had with a cookbook. I've tried more recipes out of this book than any other cookbook I've owned and after two years continue to turn to it. Nigella's writing is beyond unique - what a pleasure to read, let alone to cook. I've also given this book as gifts several times and have received so many comments on it after about what a great gift it was it continues to be in my "good gift ideas" stock pile. Worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Aims high, but misses the mark in many instances.......2007-04-27

This book is beautifully presented and has some real winners, but it would have benefitted from more careful editing and testing. I'm glad I took the time to look up 'self-rising cake flour' as it seems many disappointed reviewers did not, with disastrous results. To make self-rising cake flour, simply add about 1 tsp of baking powder per 1 cup of cake flour -- if you substitute regular cake flour, much more common in the US than self-rising, your cakes will not rise properly. I do think that the editors might have anticipated this problem, and made a small note in the US version of the book to help novice bakers. I've had great success with the Victoria Sponge and it's variations, particularly the butterscotch cake -- delicious!! I also liked the onion pie that another reviewer found underwhelming, but was frustrated at the consistency of the crust -- I followed the recipe carefully, but the crust was still impossibly soft -- I had to scoop it onto the onions, cobbler-fashion, rather than patting it out and draping it, as instructed. I also recommend increasing the thyme and using sweet yellow onions, as red onions have a bit of a grayish cast after prolonged cooking. Serve with a green salad for a very nice lunch indeed! Today I made the 'burnt butter brown sugar cupcakes' and found that the recipe makes only 9 cupcakes, rather than the dozen promised, and I had to scrape every last bit of batter to get those! Since this is for my youngest child's 1st birthday, I'm a little disappointed that there won't be 1 for each month of his life, but if the aroma and appearance are any indication, these will be delicious! To be fair, they did rise quite a bit and I suppose I could have eeked out a dozen smaller cupcakes, but next time I'll increase the recipe by half. I can't recommend this for novice or timid bakers, nor for blind followers -- be sure to read through the recipe and compare mentally with your knowledge and experience before beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this cookbook!.......2007-04-10

I received this book as a gift a few years ago and can honestly that I have tried at least 75% of the recipes. I was always intimidated by baking (after numerous basic cake and cookie disasters) and before this book, would never have attempted recipes that appear so challenging. Nigella is a wonderful writer who takes the intimidation factor out completely by using a down-to-earth tone. It feels like you are baking alongside an irreverant, sassy girlfriend!

Virtually everyone enjoys a crisply ironed dress shirt, clean sheets on a well-made bed, and a savory home-cooked meal. Yet housekeeping today stands as a somewhat neglected, if not maligned, job. But as author Cheryl Mendelson points out in Home Comforts, keeping house well can be a rewarding position--it allows you to provide for the physical and emotional comfort of loved ones. It's also not an easy job--there's much to be learned about properly managing a home, and Mendelson has set out to provide a guide to doing just that.

Mendelson, a homemaker, lawyer, and mother, learned about housekeeping from an early age from her grandmothers, one Appalachian, the other Italian. The two grandmothers taught her that although different ways of keeping house can be appropriate, there are generally smarter, faster, and more creative ways of housekeeping that make it less of a chore and more of an art. In a practical, authoritative tone, Mendelson discusses the ins and outs of homemaking, such as washing dishes, recommended cleaning methods for various surfaces, housekeeping for those with pets or allergies, and emergency preparedness and safety procedures.

Mendelson's well-researched book includes meticulous sections on food (for example, which foods belong in the fridge versus the pantry, food storage times, picking the freshest fruits and vegetables, and keeping your kitchen and food sanitary) as well as laundry (caring for various fabrics, how to read--and read between the lines of--clothing care labels, and removing stains). Mendelson covers a lot of ground, and as she herself points out, readers shouldn't feel required to do everything mentioned in the book--simply pick the activities that seem appropriate for your particular home. This is a comprehensive reference book that should serve homemakers well and induce a greater appreciation for the effort and specialized knowledge that go into keeping house. --Kris Law

    Book Description

Home Comforts is something new. For the first time in nearly a century, a sole author has written a comprehensive book about housekeeping. This is not a dry how-to manual, nor a collection of odd tips and hints, a cleaning book, a history book, or an arid encyclopedia compiled by a committee or an institute. Home Comforts is a readable explanation for both beginners and experts of all the domestic arts -- choosing fabrics, keeping the piano in tune, caring for books, making a good fire in the fireplace and avoiding chimney fires, ironing and folding, setting up a good reading light, keeping surfaces free of food pathogens, and everything else that modern people might want to do for themselves in their homes. But this reliable and thorough book on the practicalities of housekeeping is also an argument for the importance of private life and the comforts offered by housekeeping.

Cheryl Mendelson is a philosopher, lawyer, sometime professor, and a homemaker, wife, and mother. Home Comforts is based on her domestic education, which she acquired while growing up on a farm in the hills of Greene County, in southwestern Pennsylvania, from her grandmothers, aunts, and mother. Learning from the distinct domestic styles of her native Appalachian relatives and her Italian immigrant relatives, she appreciated early on how important domestic customs are to a sense of comfort and identity in life. She writes out of love and respect for her subject, and hopes to inspire others to develop the affection and respect for home life and housework she was fortunate to have learned.

Mendelson addresses the meanings as well as the methods of housekeeping with a keen sense of the history and values involved. The result is a warm, good-humored, engagingly written book with a message and a point of view, one that is overflowing with useful reflections and information. The clarity, breadth, and depth of the information collected here are unparalleled. You can read Home Comforts for thoughtful entertainment or use its ample index to help you find the answers to practical domestic questions. There is nothing quite like it.

5 out of 5 stars For beginner to expert!.......2007-05-21

Ms. Mendelsohn has created the housekeeper's bible. The beginner will find answer to every dilemma, from how to shop to how to store groceries once you get them. Food selection, preservation and storage get a thorough going-over. The chapter on cloth tells you all about how it works, how to store it, and how to clean it without getting the dreaded pink sheets from red socks.... and then how to clean the rest of your castle. Home safety is not neglected, with valuable tips for avoiding a tragedy.

Chock full of sage advice, even the veteran homemaker can benefit. This book is worth reading for everyone, and is a must-have for teaching kids who will someday be on their own. Would make a great gift for a new bride or someone setting up house in that first apartment. Five stars

    5 out of 5 stars Good resource.......2007-04-06

This has information on virtually all aspects of housekeeping. It is interesting and appropriate for both the novice housekeeper and those who have been at it for a longer period of time. While there are better single-subject books, the encyclopedic nature of this one makes it a great reference for housekeeping topics. Covers everything from ironing to thread-count to home organization. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Book!.......2007-01-26

This book reminds me of the Victorian home economics books that were popular during the cult of domesticity. It's full of tons of useful information as well as interesting factoids about the origins of many of our household rituals! I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide.......2007-01-17

There are pages and pages of things in this book that I may never do, but many more pages detailing the how and why of things I aspire to do as well as things I haven't decided yet whether I will ever get around to! Having covered EVERYTHING, the author is sure to provide me with the answer to whatever housekeeping question is important to me.

I am amazed by the completeness of this reference and absolutely charmed by the combination of modern day applicability and old world practicality!

    5 out of 5 stars A Home Staple.......2006-12-28

Every home should have this book! It not only tells you how to clean and maintain a home but it is also funny. There are instructions for how to fold bottom sheets and how long to keep different types of food in the fridge. I now buy this book for every couple getting married as part of their gift.

    5 out of 5 stars Worth It!!.......2007-10-18

I haven't fully read the whole book yet but I love what I've read so far. Very informative, and helpful in hitting some major points. This book teaches how to interact with people of ALL beliefs and how God's Word always reigns supreme. If you're serious about evangelism, I'd suggest this book.

1 out of 5 stars Lord Have Mercy.......2007-08-17

Lord have mercy, more nonsense from people trying to brainwash our children.

Please Lord save and protect our Children from the misguided, ignorant, and primitive belief system of Christians. Help them see how misguided they truly are. Keep them out of our schools and government, this I ask O'Lord Amen.

Former Christian but a believer in a "Creator"

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-07-27

This book is very clear, concise and easy to read. I encourage anyone that wants to share to the Gospel to get this.

4 out of 5 stars Great too with some flaws.......2007-07-12

This is actually a great teaching tool for evangelism. It is very reminiscent of the "teach yourself programming" books that I have read. At least it is in it's general execution. Each subject is broken into a small chapter all of its own (or a few small chapters. The questions at the end of each chapter are well written to give you a chance to go over the material in your head.

I became aware of Mr. Comfort through his television program and really liked his approach to evangelism. I think he doesn't cover objections to the truth of scripture as well as some others, but his approach on demonstrating people's need of a savior is second to none.

Also he has a large part of the book at the end dealing with "other religions" such as Mormons, Catholics, etc. I found that some of this information is in error. I spent a lot of time research alternative Christian denominations and cults and so I noticed these errors, but if you didn't it could cause problems.

All and all a great resource to have, but by all means not perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful beyond words.......2007-03-06

I came out of a pseudo-Christian cult. This book stepped me simply through the basics of the Bible and helped me understand why I need God, why the law of God is good, and how the law brings me to the foot of the cross begging for the blood of Jesus Christ.

This is a book that brings people to Christ by giving a good understanding of God's will. It cuts through the fog of rhetoric and reveals rock solid Truth that has profoundly changed the way I think.

I have given the book and told my other excult friends about this book and they have found it extremely helpful. Three of my friends now have left the cult and are in fellowship with Christians now.

Praise God for Christians who tell it like it is.

    Book Description

Vintage aprons and modern designs are turning up in movies, magazine spreads, upscale shops, and hip retail venues like Anthropologie, whose trendy line of aprons is selling as fast as they can stock them. The Apron Book is an infectiously enthusiastic guide to aprons, old and new, that are suddenly everywhere.

Aprons take us back to our favorite place¿hearth and home. Vintage aprons help us remember home and family the way they used to be, while bright and sassy contemporary aprons confirm that nesting is all the rage. Actress and trendsetter Julia Roberts has a closetful of vintage aprons. Celebrity custom-made apron auctions have become an annual event for several popular charities in the past few years.

The Apron Book provides full-color photos of new and vintage aprons from the author's collection, patterns for four basic apron styles and myriad variations, recipes, tips on collecting and preserving vintage aprons, and heart-tugging stories from the author's traveling apron exhibit. The book also explores the heyday of aprons and looks at the various roles aprons still play when worn in the kitchen, around the house, by the backyard grill, on the job, and for special occasions.

Warm and inviting¿but like an apron quite practical!¿this book is a celebration of a great American icon and reminds us of what we loved about the people who wore them.

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful read.......2007-08-31

I found "The Apron Book" book to be absolutely charming and fully engaging. Old enough to remember aprons similar to those represented being worn by family and friends, as well as being an inveterate collector of fabric, this work prompts pleasant memories as it nudges me toward my machine.

5 out of 5 stars The Apron Book: Making, Wearing, and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort.......2007-08-23

This book is a good gift, coffee table book, or reference book. It has lots of pictures of authentic vintage patterns, vintage looking aprons, and ideas for color and cloth. The vintage patterns she displays are very usefull and can easily be reinvented with modern commercial patterns.
The patterns she offers are alittle disappointing, especially for children. I was looking for a Mom and kid combo with a bib type pattern. The childs pattern has no bib and was not gathered/sewn to the waiste band but like curtins, gathering as it falls.
There is a "no frills" commercial type pattern for Mom on the back cover and the book gives good details for the patterns she describes in the book.
To me the strenght of her book is in her pictures for ideas, and you can pick up patterns that are exactly like what is pictured in her books commercially. Personally I liked her book, I like idea books with vintage styles. This book can sit on your self until the time you need "inspiration" or a quick apron idea for a gift you want to make.

5 out of 5 stars The Apron Book: Making, Wearing and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort.......2007-08-17

Great find!! Such pretty illustrations and wonderful personal 'apron' stories. I loved it from cover to cover. Bought it for a gift but cannot bear to give it away now.

4 out of 5 stars Well photographed book with cute APRON STORIES.......2007-08-13

This is a cute book about aprons. The photos are just marvelous---very bright and colorful!

Each sub-category, in each chapter, comes with a funny or sweet story about the various "special" aprons photographed.

I am giving it a 4-star rather than a 5-star because with over 500+ collectible aprons that the author owns, I wish she had photographed even a small array or "collage-photo", showing more of her pretty aprons. Maybe she could have added a few additional pages to her book, with a combo-photo of more of her aprons.

The author mentions so many interesting aprons that she owns in her collection (but did not show), and so I wanted to see a few more aprons she mentioned throughout the book... (for example: maybe even a photograph or two of a "collage" of just 40 more aprons would have been great).

However, maybe once the author sees how well her first book on aprons is selling right now, she will write a volume #II next time---which I will buy.

This is a great bible and evangelism tool as well as just and encouraging bible tool to help remind, build, and inspire those who read it to get out there and share the gospel!

The translation is wonderful. I'm suprised no one else ever decided to do the minimal translation changes that the Evidence Bible does. Takes out the thy's and thous and never changes the verbs or nouns or adjectives at all. Just the old linking words with new common words like you and the.

    3 out of 5 stars So So.......2007-06-11

This book was a bit disapointing. The disappointment comes from the intrepetation of Country style or English country style, as shown the the photographs, as being lots of clutter and in some cases not the best of taste. I have many other style books that show how charming Country style, antiques and hodge podge collections can be, but somehow many of the examples in this book miss the mark. Maybe the author's take on Country style is just not my cup of country tea, so to speak. Many photos are from the author's own home and I felt that narrowed the scope of the book somewhat.

5 out of 5 stars inspiration for your dream home.......2007-02-28

I can seldom resist a good décor book, especially one on Country Style. My current excuse is that I'm looking for ideas I can use in my own country house which I've been renovating for the past 5 years.

Shades of Country is perfect for the amateur decorator and it's reasonably priced too. It is profusely illustrated with a wealth of examples of actual American homes -- including the author's own country retreat -- which are not only beautiful but emphasize comfort & practicality. Some of them are derived from European country styles, but most are what we think of as typically American - east coast farmhouses, Shaker simplicity, Montana ranch and rustic Adirondack cabin.

There is something for every taste here; cosy bedrooms with iron beds & antique bureaus & old quilts in muted pastels; walls painted, wallpapered, wainscotted or of varnished logs; walls hung with blue and white platters, old portraits or prints or ornate mirrors; a stair rail made from a birch tree; support posts disguised as palm trees; kitchens with open shelves of china bowls or glassware, and red-painted iron pots hanging from overhead beams; staircases plain or classic; toile's and stripes and rose-bouquet chintzes; floral cushions on a jade green slip-covered sofa; cobalt blue cushions on spruce-green wicker chairs on a white-painted verandah; a window box on a country out-house, and bookshelves - which I seldom see in American decor magazines - including one converted from a fireplace hole-in-the-wall (I guess I'm not the first to think of doing that) and fluted pilasters high-lighting an otherwise plain bookshelf .

Whether you are renovating your home; or still dreaming of that someday home in the country; updating a tired décor or looking for ideas for colour schemes or a knick-knack shelf, this book will inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Country Homes.......2007-01-16

This may not break any new ground in decorating, but I never fail to enjoy browsing one more book on the topic of country style. This shows use of fabrics, accessories, paint and furniture that makes country style what it is. It also defines some sub-genres of country; Farmhouse, Grand Country, Cottage, Rusticator, Clean and Simple, and Urban Arcadia.
If you like Country Living magazine or enjoy the Shabby Chic trend, then you'll find pleasure in this book.

    2 out of 5 stars Ho-hum.......2006-12-30

In my opinion, this book did not "live up to" it's cover. Too many of the rooms looked very dated. I love the idea of collecting over time but many of these rooms were very lackluster and boring. I requested it as a Christmas gift and wish I could un-request it!

3 out of 5 stars Just another potpourri book..........2006-10-20

I love interior decorating books, especially Colonial, Regency and Victorian or English Country Style. But this book covers too much territory. A few pictures of each, as well as others styles like Ranch, or French. If you are having trouble deciding on a style, this book might help you. It has lovely illustrations, but again, as it is trying to cover many different styles falling under the broad title of "Country" your information is limited. There are too many books coming out like this. Specialty books are much better. Look to Rizzoli for the best in interior decorating books, or if you want some kind of country, best buy a book that covers that one particular style. I browsed through this at the store, hoping it might make a good Christmas present for me, but it ended up back on the shelf.
