Fantastic for Reference or Coffee Table.......2007-07-07
I am taking my teenager on a backpacking trip around the world, and this obviously requires a bit of research. I have to admit that I have done most of this in the bookstores, sitting with a book such as this one, and taking notes.
This book, this massive tome, though, kept calling to me every time I went in. I came up with a justification for buying it easily enough - it will look great on the coffee table! (And it does)
It impresses in several ways
1- The breadth - every country in the world - every single one - has a 2 page spread. (Only thing left out are the micronations, but don't worry, LP has a separate book just for them!)
2 - The pictures - in true LP fashion, the photos are stunning views into another place, a different culture, often taken from an angle you don't expect.
3 - The information - concise, accurate, up-to-date. Included are little bits you won't easily find elsewhere, like how much for a cup of coffee, or the best things to shop for, or unexpected experiences one may find just off the beaten path. Of course, you will also find the essential bits of history and culture to help you get a feel for the place.
I find my self turning to it time and again as I research our trip - it gives me just enough info to know if I want to further investigate a place, or if I should just leave it to armchair travel. This book, by the way, is the ultimate guide for the armchair traveller!
My son has used it for school projects. When he had to write a paper on Africa that included 5 different countries, this is the book he used to determine which countries to research.
Also, it really does look FANTASTIC on your coffee table! Your friends will pick it up as soon as they sit down - you'll see. It is such a large and gorgeous book, and at such a crazy cheap price, there's little risk here.
If your considering buying it, go ahead, you will be happy to own it. And your friends will be glad you own it, too!
Great Gift Idea.......2007-07-03
I have given this book as a gift (appreciation, birthday, etc) a number of times and each time the receipient has LOVED it!
travel book.......2007-06-28
i absolutely love this book. it's great to learn a little bit about each country in the world. it has fantastic pictures. great for the world traveler or the person that likes to dream about the world!
This is my favorite photography travel book ever........2007-06-10
I am so happy I decided to buy this. It helps me understand what other parts of the world are like the people and land. Places I never even knew existed. I have a better understand and Idea of what the world is like now. I have even become very interested in learning about other places and to visit them. It is my first resource to picking a place to go on vacation. This is a great resource if you want ideas for places to travel. My only complaint is that I wish the book listed a little more practical information on each country. They dont tell much about the countries. Also I would highly recommend purchasing the hardcover edition as the paper back in this book is so large that it quickly became unglued from the spine. Definatly get this book if you are curious about places of the world or if want to glimpse into all the countries looking for places to visit. I didnt know how many choices there are. The photographs are wonderful and real of what daily life is really like in each country. Not like the romantic touristy photos in other books. This is really healpful because you dont just see all the beautiful good places in a country. You get to see the reality wich is really helpful when choosing a vacation destination. I only give 4 stars because of the lack of information provided on each country is very small.
Great dream starter.......2007-05-14
This is a beautiful coffee-table sized book that gives the reader a "taste" of every country in the world. As a traveler, I love the pictures and the opportunity to learn about countries I read and hear about. It'a a great introduction and the references to movies, books and movies about the country are helpful too.
Book Description
With this gorgeously illustrated book and activity set, kids can fly into outer space and take a guided tour of the sparkling night sky. It features so many appealing elements that make the astronomical journey special: a poster of the solar system, reusable planet stickers to place on the poster, a map of the constellations, and more than 100 glow-in-the-dark star stickers. And it’s all nicely packaged in an envelope bound into the book’s front cover. The trip begins with the sun, and then it’s on to the moon and an exploration of its cycles. Move farther out to gaze upon the stars and map out the constellations. Finally, children return to Earth to gain an understanding of our own special place in the solar system.
Book Description

A Handy Little Reference Manual.......1998-05-19
This guide is a quick reference for lots of interesting places to dive in Texas. It provides a nice table at the beginning of each entry giving depth, visibility, water conditions, ease of entry, nearest place to get tanks refilled and suggested dive ability.
Color pictures, both in and out of the water, are provided for practically every dive site listed.
On the strength of this guide, I'll be buying guides from the same publisher to other dive destinations.

Book Description
From Nothing to Zero presents edited extracts from letters written by asylum seekers held in Australia's detention centres. These letters provide a rare glimpse into the world of refugees who have fled war and persecution in their own countries. Several of the contributing detainees have been held for more than three years, often with no end to their incarceration in sight.
This compelling book gives voice to people whose thoughts and experiences are only rarely heard.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to finish with dry eyes........2003-12-24
This is a collection put together of letters from refugees in Australian detention centres. For those of you that don't know this - Australia has a policy of taking in only 12,000 refugees a year - this is nothing compared to many other countries. If they arrive here without a visa they are immediately put into a detention centre, in the most harsh, remote places in Australia and kept there until their applications are 'processed' - the process drags on and on and the Australian government is particularly cruel to refugees and has had the UNHCR criticised the processes and procedures used.
This book provides an amazing insight into their world and what it is like for them to be locked up in a detention centre with their rights void.
This is what one refugee has to say:
'This place is not for human being. This is refugee zoo. The government keep me in zoo without crime. Here in the centre not good things to do. Just thinking and thinking. I came here for safe life. But the government put me in prison. They do not want to here my problem. They just want to pass the time. This is no justice. They want to make me crazy. Now I'm crazy. Dead is much better than this zoo.'
The proceeds for this book go towards helping the refugees - for this reason alone I urge people to get this book and see into their world.

Cordelia's Honor (Hugo Winners) (Hugo Winners)
ASIN: 0965834522 |
Book Description
Murder, Mystery, and Interstellar Intrigue! Hugo Award winner Janet Kagan's Hellspark is now back in print! Lassti, a newly discovered planet, is the center of political intrigue. Recently, Oloitokitok, the planet survey team's physicist was found dead. Was he killed? If so, by who? One of his fellow surveyors? Or by one of the Sprookjes, the birdlike natives of Lassti? Are the Sprookjes intelligent? If so, then parties that want the planet for development will lose it. Why is the survey team having so much trouble finding out? Into this situation arrives Tocohl, a Hellspark trader who just wanted to have a vacation on Sheveschke at the St. Veschke festival. After being attacked, rescuing a young woman, and going before a judge, Tocohl has learned all she ever wanted to know about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now she is on her way to find Lasti to find answers to the mysteries there.
Customer Reviews:
An awesome book.......2007-07-19
This is the book that introduced me to the idea that body language could be, and should be, studied exactly like, and along with, any foreign language. The linguistical study, as vital as it is, still takes second place to the mystery that underlies the whole book. There are a few names that can be hard to say correctly, but it is well worth taking the time to learn them. This book is more than just a simple mystery novel, ultimately dealing with the question "just what does 'human' mean?" Unreservedly recommended.
Wonderful Author.......2007-06-13
This is a truly incredible book. Not quite as light-hearted as her other novel (Mirabile) but very entertaining. I wish she would write more.
One of my favorite books.......2003-08-09
"Hellspark," by Janet Kagan, is a flat out readable book. It gets everything right, from the science to the psychology to the anthropology -- everything works.
The plot is somewhat difficult to describe. Tocohl Susumo is a ship captain, trader, and bon vivant; her sentient computer Margaret, Lord Lynn is her sole companion.
At the Festival of Saint Veschke on the world of Sheveschkem, Tocohl finds danger, mystery, intrigue . . . and maybe even a hint of scandal. She goes to Lassti to find out whether or not a new race of beings, the sprookjes, are sentient -- or aren't.
There's a whole lot more to it; it's a comedy of manners, a comedy of language, and a hint of romance among Tocohl and Om Im Chadeayne helps to spice the mix. (The romance between Alfvaen and swift-Kalat does even more along these lines.)
I wish I knew how to describe this book better. All I can say is that I enjoy it for the language, the sense of humor, the mystery, the intrigue, the conflict, and everything else besides.
Five stars plus, recommended.
Oh yeah, and if you like this, you'll probably like the other couple of books Ms. Kagan has written -- "Mirabile" and "Uhura's Song" -- as well as works by Steve Miller and Sharon Lee, Lois Bujold, and possibly David Weber.
Barb Caffrey
More! More!.......2002-06-28
Hellspark is quite possibly my single favorite book - and I read an awful lot of books. All of Janet Kagan's books are wonderful, and my only gripe with her as an author is that she's only written three so far (Please Ma'am can I have some more?) Hellspark is a fascinating first contact book, with a crystal clear look at how our culture informs our assumptions, and the huge messes those assumptions can cause. Tocohl Susumo (our Hellspark protagonist) is wonderful as the only good cultural interpreter in a mass of surveyors from vastly different worlds, Maggy, her computer is a delightful mix of rapid thinking and small-child personality, and her aliens (the Sprookje) are truly alien without being unbelievable or trite. If you've already read this one, go on and try Mirabile and Uhura's Song, which are also wonderful reads.
Neat idea, but laborious reading.......2002-05-21
I seem to be in the minority here, but I was not blown away by this book.
I found the plot ok, but there were simply too many characters presented one after another in too few pages. It became laborious to keep track of them all. On top of that, I found the author's writing style to be awkard at times, forcing me to reread sections multiple times throughout the book in order to understand what the salient points were.

Janet Halley provides a close reading and provocative history of the 1993 revisions to the U.S. military's antigay policy. Possibly most shocking is Halley's account of how Congress and the Department of Defense rebuffed the Clinton administration's attempted compromise policy based on a status/action distinction. Halley shows how the status/action distinction has completely collapsed; self-identification as gay is taken to indicate a propensity to engage in gay acts--and consequently as equal grounds for discharge.
Ironically, as Halley notes, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund itself had "argued that sodomy was a necessary element of gay life" in an amicus brief in Bowers v. Hardwick, the landmark 1986 Supreme Court decision denying privacy protection to homosexual sex. Hardwick is at the heart of Halley's argument; as many have noted, the Georgia statute in question applied to all acts of sodomy, both heterosexual and homosexual. The Supreme Court, however, directed its opinion only at homosexual sodomy and, as Halley puts it, "in their hands, sodomy and homosexual persons became metonyms of one another," establishing the foundation for the military's misnamed "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
This is a dense, thought-provoking little book, certainly worth looking at for anyone interested in the legal and political aspects of the issue of gays in the military. Ultimately, her analysis suggests, political and intellectual bad faith have resulted in an unconstitutional policy that exposes all military personnel (not just homosexuals) to intense sexual scrutiny and restricts both their speech and acts. --Julia Riches
Book Description
In Don’t Janet E. Halley explains how the military's new anti-gay policy is fundamentally misdescribed by its common nickname, âDon't Ask/Don't Tell.â This ubiquitous phrase, she points out, implies that it discharges servicemembers not for who they are, but for what they do. It insinuates that, as long as military personnel keep quiet about their homosexual orientation and desist from âhomosexual conduct,â no one will try to pry them out of their closets and all will be well.
Not so, reveals Halley. In order to work through the steps by which the new law was ultimately drafted, she opens with a close reading of the 1986 Supreme Court sodomy case which served as the legal and rhetorical model for the policy revisions made in 1993. Halley also describes how the Clinton administration’s attempts to offer Congress an opportunity to regulate conductâand not statusâwere flatly rejected and not included in the final statute. Using cultural and critical theory seldom applied to explain the law, Halley argues that, far from providing privacy and an assurance that servicemembers' careers will be ruined only if they engage in illegal conduct, the rule activates a culture of minute surveillance in which every member must strictly avoid using any gesture in an ever-evolving lexicon of âconduct that manifests a propensity.â In other words, not only homosexuals but all military personnel are placed in danger by the new policy. After challenging previous pro-gay arguments against the policy that have failed to expose its most devious and dangerous elements, Halley ends with a persuasive discussion about how it is both unconstitutional and, politically, an act of sustained bad faith.
This knowledgeable and eye-opening analysis of one of the most important public policy debates of the 1990s will interest legal scholars, policymakers, activists, military historians and personnel, as well as citizens concerned about issues of discrimination.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant analysis of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.......1999-09-11
Halley not only carefully dissects the military's current policy toward gay and lesbian members, revealing its legal shortcomings and moral hollowness, she takes prominent public figures to task for supporting such a policy. The book is short, the argument dense, her conclusions inescapable. A necessary book.

"The fast-paced, clever writing . . . will keep teens eagerly reading and sharing passages with each other to the end." — BOOKLIST
With a Mad Cow for a mother, an eccentric psychotherapist for a father, and a dweeble for an older brother, it's no wonder sixteen-year-old Janet Bandry is ready to enter the Dark Phase of her life. As this determined British teenager sees it, the DP requires dressing in black, listening to jazz when she can find the right radio station, and thinking about Deep and Meaningful Things — when she isn't thinking about boys, what color to dye her hair, or whether her nose piercing is infected. Told in diary entries with a comical dose of melodrama, PLANET JANET shares the painfully funny travails of a winning new heroine who just knows she is destined for greatness.
Customer Reviews:
One of the WORST books I've ever read.......2005-01-04
First off, I just want to say that if I could give this book no stars, I would. I hated it. Janet is a self-obsorbed annoying brat. She judges people on the most shallow things. I can totally relate to her whole family, who all hate her. Don't waste your money on this book.
It's definitely for younger readers..........2004-04-30
I thought this book was very funny. Yes, the main character is very self-absorbed and whines a lot. That's the whole point. It's the diary of a 16 yr old self centered girl. I laughed out loud during many parts of it. It's a very quick read, too. I finished it in a few hours. It's not one of the greats of British literature, but I don't think it deserves such negative reviews. The book is just what it's meant to be.
Is it over yet?.......2003-11-03
When I picked up this book I thought it would be enjoyable since I love other British authors, such as Louise Rennsion. But this book, made me ill. In the series by Louise Rennison, she manages to take teen life and make it highly enjoyable and almost ridicoulously funny. I found this book nothing like it. The main character Janet, doesn't stop whining for about 200 pages about how crazy her family is, and I don't understand why she is complaining so much.
I wasn't planning on finishing the book but I did anyway, and it did not get any better. As a whole the plot line could of been great but it was overshadowed by Janet's ability to blow everything out of proportion and complain about the littlest things.
A okay book..........2003-07-17
hmmm... this book was okay but i prefer books by meg cabot, elizabeth chandlier, or ann brashares. Overall, this book deserves a 3 at least.
An entertaining weekend read.......2003-03-04
Virtually every teenager goes through it. One day they decide they're going to become more sophisticated, and like Janet, think reading Beat poetry, listening to jazz, and changing their diet and/or wardrobe is the way to achieve such sophistication. It is no surprise then, that when Janet Bandry, protagonist of Dyan Sheldon's "Planet Janet" and her best friend, Disha, decide to enter the "Dark Phase" (or "DP") of their lives, that these are the first things they do.
Sure to please fans of Louise Rennison's "Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging", "Planet Janet" chronicles Janet's five-month journey into the world of yoga, vegetarianism, and "deep, intellectual thought" through her diary entries. Already thoroughly self-absorbed (hence her parents nickname for her, "Planet Janet"), Janet reaches the epitome of teen solipsism before true tragedy brings her back to Earth. Loaded with slang, criticism of her "self-absorbed" family members, and a few graphic sexual references, the book takes the adult reader back to their own "Dark Phase" and is sure to engage the average 16-year old girl. At times the book is laugh-out-loud funny; at others, Janet's egotism is so utterly pathetic that one prays s/he wasn't that ignorant and aloof as a teen and that not all teens are so narcissistic.
Besides being a very easy read due to the diary format, another plus is the handy glossary Sheldon included at the back of the book. While most of the slang is easy to understand or figure out, there are a few words or abbreviations that might throw someone unfamiliar with British culture and language. "Planet Janet" is listed as suitable for ages nine and up, but is more likely suited to those a little older for several reasons. Chances are a nine-year old won't be able to fully relate to Janet or appreciate a lot of the literary, political, and philosophical references. In addition, though younger readers might be familiar with the sexual references, it is better to err on the side of caution as the few entries that do discuss sex can be somewhat graphic. All in all "Planet Janet" is a fun, quick read for young adults and not-so-young adults alike and is a must for anyone that has ever been in a "Dark Phase" of their own.
