5 out of 5 stars The best mystery books ever!.......2007-10-18

When I first read the first one where Alison thought kelly
would be there for her but then kelly is betraying her and
stole her boyfriend and mostly having every one betraying
Alison. Zoey seems she is using Alison for Revenge but is
having second thought. When the Grandmother had that
bomb and didn't die? That was weird because she walked
right through it. When Alisons dad called and warned her
to stay there, Alison was worried. When she went home, her
dad was gone. When she opened the peice of paper her dad
left on the desk, a key fell out and the paper said nothing
on it.

4 out of 5 stars Little Secrets #1: Playing With Fire.......2006-11-06

This book is about a rich girl named Alison whose life has gone wrong. Both of her parents never have time for her. She can not trust anyone. Her mother, Helen, was arrested for embezzlement (had the right to possess an item but use the position to convert property) and tax fraud (lying about taxes). Alison felt like there was no pride left in her.
Her backstabbing cousin, Kelly, stole her boyfriend, Chad.
She has done many horrible things to her. Chad is questioning himself if he should stay with her or not. This has a similar plot to Nancy Drew. They are both trying to find out about their family. I did not like Kelly. The things she did and said to people were mean. For instance, she blamed Alison for everything that went wrong.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Emily is beautiful.......2006-08-22

I love Emily the Strange. A lot of people would call her Goth, but she isn't about that. Sure, she might fit, but she isn't about fitting in with a trend or group. Emily is Emily. She scares away scary things by making them her friends. The scary friends also serve to keep sheep-people (who are often scarier) at a safe distance.

The illustrations are beautiful. The few words are often cliches slightly turned. Emily the Strange is clever and lovely.

There is no award for being the weirdest, most morbid, or most violent. Emily wouldn't win those competitions, or enter them. Enjoy Emily or don't. No one cares whether or not you like Emily. No one cares whether or not I like Emily. Least of all, Emily.

This is one librarian's opinion of Emily the Strange. I hope it helps you decide whether or not to buy the book. Anyway, reviews stoke my vanity. If you aren't ready to buy, you could borrow it from your library and form your own opinion first.

5 out of 5 stars i love everything Emily The Strange!.......2005-08-24

Hey there, my name is Emily, that's not why I love Emily The Strange. I am also 12 years old, but 2 years ago, thanks to someone special, I got into Emily stuff. My friend Ashley, well, her big sister showed me some of her Emily stuff, I really liked Emily then, she told me to look out for some Emily the Strange stuff and that it's probably right up my alley. And she's right, 2 years later, I'm an Emily the strange freak! I collect all the cards, I 've got tons of stuff, actually, I think that's all the stuff I have, Emily the Strange stuff. Maybe a few hello kitty stuff, but nothing else. I went onto hot topic, and spent some of my birthday money on Emily the Strange stuff, I have a really nice bed spread and pillow cases that match. Anyway, about the book, I love every single thing about it. It really inspires me. I like the way Emily can speak cat, I like the plan with the cats to attack the dog, I'm an animal lover, and I would never hurt one, I wouldn't hurt someone either. I like the way in one of the pages it says hell-o-kitty, you have to see that. I have 2 cats, who are very friendly, I have my own posse. This book is a must have, I do recommend the Emily's good nightmares book, I only have 2 of Emily's books, I'm looking out for the other one. I know Emily's morose code all by heart, so does my friend Ashley, we do all sorts of letters to each other with the morose code, that way, no one knows what it says but us!But this book is really cool, I like that it has such big, and discriptive pictures, but with such little words, I like that it's simple. A good item for a strange collection, like mine!
Now, get strange, or get lost!
Emily the strange, the stranger!

5 out of 5 stars Long live Emily!.......2004-03-26

Emily is an intelligent little black and white child who started out as a small internet idea but spawned into a large merchandise line and nows the chance to see for yourself why this little goth girl is so popular. With wit, sarcasm, insight, and her four dangerous cats, Emily will show you the dark side of life that has already been favored by many of us. I love the awesome cover, the illustrations and each page in the book has many secret codes and messages for you to find. I've had this book for months and theres still things i find myself noticing for the very first time! Rock on Emily!

5 out of 5 stars read this then go away!.......2004-01-31

It's essential for any chick who is drawn to the darker things in life to own at least one Emily item but once you enter her bizarre world it's hard to go back. I received both "Emily's Book Of Strange" along with the 2004 calendar for my birthday and those were a perfect introduction to this quiet (but nowhere near shy) cat-luvin' Goth grrl who's preferred favorite color is everything black...or red. Her attitude is anything but cheery but sometimes us open-minded people have to shield ourselves from the ones that are afraid to venture outside the box and to explore what's beyond the edges. I could be wrong but I believe her image is a symbol of encouraging individuality. Or, in other words, to think for yourself without following the crowd by listening and dressing according to what's considered "normal".

There's not a lot of text within these pages (there's often a bare minimum of two words) but the illustrations by Rob Reger and Buzz Parker are creatively "strange" and pure (or is that tainted?) candy for the eyes.

I especially enjoy perusing this on cold, rainy days.

5 out of 5 stars emily the strange is amazing!.......2003-10-24

I really like the Emily's Secret Book of Strange because it has really cool pictures. Although, it doesn't really have that many words in it either but the pictures are amazing and fun to look at. the secret messeges that are on the pages are really cool, but you have to look closely to see them. If you like to look at a lot of pictures, Emily's Book of the strange has a lot of them.

Book Description

The gaming industry's established marketing guru reveals the persuasive sales tactics he uses to find players and keep them coming back INSIDE FLAP: When a casino client told John Romero he had to get a mailing out at once and could he please have a 2-page sales letter back the same day, John e-mailed it to him three hours later--with a bill. "Tell me the truth," said the client the following day, "just how long did it take you to write that?" "Thirty five years," said John. Although 1998 marks John's 38th year in the casino business, he's been an award-winning writer since the 50's, when he was a newspaper editor and columnist. Fighting daily deadlines taught him to write quickly--and accurately--with a witty, persuasive style that has been on display for 13 years in IGWB Magazine. He's famous for his casino sales letters that occasionally run up to four pages in length and for his long copy direct response ads that have become sales classics (one ran for five years, pulling in a steady stream of business). Early in his gaming career he began to haunt the casino floor, learning what went on in the minds of the customers--a practice he still continues. As a result, he understands both casino and player as few marketing and advertising specialists do. Profound change overtook him when he discovered the power of direct mail in the 60's. "Clearly," says John, "this was the selling strategy of the future for casinos." But in 1985, when he began his column in IGWB, he couldn't find a single casino with a direct marketing department. He promptly set out to remedy that. By the early 90's, prodded by John's relentless logic and common sense essays, casinos had begun an amazing shift from the old mass marketing to direct selling. His first book, "Casino Marketing," published in 1994, pushed it along by establishing the power of casino databases to build relationships and repeat business and by proving the selling ability of direct response advertising. In Secrets of Casino Marketing, John expands his IGWB marketing columns with new material. Then he blends in excerpts from his seminars at the World Gaming Congress and Expo and more than 50 other speaking engagements. He shows you his successful casino sales letters, some of them word-for-word, and elaborates on casino floor promotions, advertising, tournaments, local markets, slot clubs, hosts, inactives, testing, and dozens of other marketing tactics. John is a former sports editor for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and feature writer for United Press International, Associated Press and Sports Illustrated magazine. He began his casino career in 1960 at the former Del Webb's Sahara, Las Vegas, and was a pioneer in casino direct mail and floor promotions. He opened his own advertising agency in 1979, and later became a founder and principal of Players International, Inc., a public company. He became an independent casino marketing consultant in 1987, specializing in direct mail, direct response advertising, promotions and database building. His numerous sales awards include three Echos (2 gold, 1 silver) from the Direct Marketing Association.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Secrets of Casino Marketing.......2003-10-23

I am very disappointed at the book. I thought the book was written by a casino marketing guru who has a lot of useful tips to share about "casino marketing". But what I found is just things about direct mailings. Maybe at times it touched on advertising (things related to marketing), yet, they're not the focus of the book. The book is just about direct mail - how to write successful selling letters. The title of the book is misleading.

But yet, still, even so, things are scattered, the reader can never get a full picture on how to write good, successful direct mail because there's no overview of examples - it's just pieces of paragraphs here and there. I wonder why the author did that. What's the purpose? He doesn't want to share with us because it's his "secrets"? I can't even find a full direct mail letter in the book. How can one learn how to write a complete letter without seeing a letter in full?

I am convinced that I am a fool in buying this book (especially that I pay so much in getting the book). It's a total disappointment. I regret buying it.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2003-07-04

This collection of common sense essays from IGWB magazine inspired casinos to shift from the old mass marketing to direct selling. With relentless logic John covers everything from the care and feeding of general managers and the hidden advantage of direct marketing to the night the Beatles played Las Vegas. Hardcover, 268 pages, $... each (US) plus $...shipping in USA, $... shipping to all other international destinations. NOTE: If ordering by mail you may pay by credit card, check or money order. Checks must be drawn on a US bank in US funds.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the secrets of successful casino marketing.......1999-04-01

This book is a must read for anyone seriously pursuing or already working in casino marketing. Read this book if you want to improve your marketing efforts, even if you're NOT in the gaming business. John Romero offers plenty of powerful tips and suggestions that produce positive results. Based on 38 years of doing everything he writes about, Romero tells you how to write an effective letter that will generate a customer response every time. If you write persuasively you'll hook your reader. "Secrets of Casino Marketing" shows you how. It explains what works and what doesn't and why. This is a fun book to read because the author grabs and holds you with stories of his casino marketing experience and tells you--using his wit and humor--how they relate to successful marketing strategies. I recouped the price of the book ten-fold on the first sales letter I sent out to my customers. Just by following the common sense guidelines discovered in this book, I immediately tripled my response rate. It's simple. Read this book, then do it. You'll be surprised by your improved results. And you learn it all from an expert who worked years in casinos to find out what motivates gamblers to do what they do. He found out a lot.

A great Harry Potter book that's really fun to read in French. It's not always easy to understand the vocabulary, and it's in that crazy tense that looks like future but is actually sort of past and is only used in literature ..... but get a good dictionnaire and you'll be fine. Bonne chance!

I am an avid reader, and I read quite a lot of so-called chic-lit. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised to read through this novel, which has a super clever and new theme. The idea behind the story is fresh, and I thought it was superb. It was such an entertaining read, and I loved the characters. I've passed this one on to many friends.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Easy Reading.......2007-09-23

I'm not much of a reader, so you must imagine how scared I was when I saw the size of the book. I started reading and I could not put this book down. I read it in less than a day and when I finished I couldn't stop thinking about the book and its great ending.
It's about a woman named Emma that goes on a business trip to Glasgow and on her way back she meets a man on the airplane to whom she tells all her secrets to when there's a lot of turbulence on the plane and she believes he'll be the last person she'll ever see. She thinks that she'll never see this man again, luckily, but to her surprise it turns out to be her boss.
I laughed out loud and I felt her anxiety when she was nervous. The book has great imagery and I can assure you won't be wasting your time reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Light and funny.......2007-08-23

I actually laughed outload in some parts. The elevator scene was priceless. A great book for a easy read for a weekend.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Kinsella representation.......2007-08-03

I have read almost all of Sophie Kinsella's books, including this one twice. Though some parts of the book have redeeming qualities, overall this was not one of Kinsella's best. The part in the book when Jack goes on national TV is especially unbelievable. Who does that? In any case, if you are looking for an entertaining Kinsella read, stick to the Shopaholic series!

    3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-07-02

Reminiscent of Bridget Jones, Emma Corrigan is trying to succeed (albeit, desperately at times)- in life, work, and love. In her new job as marketing assistant, she hasn't been asked to do much. Basically she is a secretary with a glorified title. Due to scheduling conflicts, she is the only one available to visit a client to close a deal. All she had to do was work out some minor details. Needless to says, things don't work out very well and that is despite her valiant efforts. On the plane ride home, there is quite a bit of turbulence that scares Emma into revealing ALL her secrets to the handsome American man sitting next to her. Unbeknownst to Emma, that man happens to be the CEO of her company, Jack Harper. EEK!!!

There are some great, laugh-out-loud moments that result- Jack enjoys hinting at her secrets, making Emma nervous, even though no one catches the double meanings...

Though, I didn't enjoy the story as much as the Shopaholic books, it is still a fun read. My big complaint is that there is a lot more instances of profanity than in Ms. Kinsella's other books- the f-word has no purpose or meaning other than being a horribly crass and ineffectual way of expressing oneself. A disappointment for me, but others may not be bothered. Overall a light, breezy, fun, quick read! Great for a day at the beach or a long car ride...

    Book Description

Teasing Secrets from the Dead is a front-lines story of crime scene investigation at some of the most infamous sites in recent history.
In this absorbing, surprising, and undeniably compelling book, forensics expert Emily Craig tells her own story of a life spent teasing secrets from the dead.

Emily Craig has been a witness to history, helping to seek justice for thousands of murder victims, both famous and unknown. It’s a personal story that you won’t soon forget. Emily first became intrigued by forensics work when, as a respected medical illustrator, she was called in by the local police to create a model of a murder victim’s face. Her fascination with that case led to a dramatic midlife career change: She would go back to school to become a forensic anthropologist—and one of the most respected and best-known “bone hunters” in the nation.
As a student working with the FBI in Waco, Emily helped uncover definitive proof that many of the Branch Davidians had been shot to death before the fire, including their leader, David Koresh, whose bullet-pierced skull she reconstructed with her own hands. Upon graduation, Emily landed a prestigious full-time job as forensic anthropologist for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, a state with an alarmingly high murder rate and thousands of square miles of rural backcountry, where bodies are dumped and discovered on a regular basis. But even with her work there, Emily has been regularly called to investigations across the country, including the site of the terrorist attack on the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, where a mysterious body part—a dismembered leg—was found at the scene and did not match any of the known
victims. Through careful scientific analysis, Emily was able to help identify the leg’s owner, a pivotal piece of evidence that helped convict Timothy McVeigh.

In September 2001, Emily received a phone call summoning her to New York City, where she directed the night-shift triage at the World Trade Center’s body identification site, collaborating with forensics experts from all over the country to collect and identify the remains of September 11 victims.

From the biggest news stories of our time to stranger-than-true local mysteries, these are unforgettable stories from the case files of Emily Craig’s remarkable career.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-15

This book is a winner just as is Mr. Lee. I have met him and his courses are so well put that one wants to extend the learning periods.

    5 out of 5 stars Inside peek.......2007-01-07

I am a dispatcher with the KY State Police and I read Dr. Craig's book and thought it was WONDERFUL. I've seen her name associated with several major events and when I found out she had a book, I got my hands on it as soon as I could. I was curious about what her job entailed. If anyone is curious about forensic anthropology or forensic science in general, I highly recommend this book. But, it's not just a cold, hard science book. She pulls you into the cases and you find your emotions stirred by the way she presents them to you in the book.

5 out of 5 stars An Extremely Interesting Profession.......2006-06-30

When I saw Emily Craig's book, I was very interested to see how good it would be. But, after reading the first few pages, I was hooked. This book paints an excellent picture of what it would be like to work as a foresic anthropologist. Emily does a great job at describing all of her encounters in detail. I would have to say that this is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read!

2 out of 5 stars Ego Trip is Right!.......2005-08-02

I have a passion for forensic science books. Although this book is well written, what takes away the joy of reading it is the author's tremendous ego. That really annoyed me. At the end of the book, the reader can do nothing other than exclaim (facetiously, of course): Wow! What would the world ever do without Emily Craig?! I fully agree with the prior reviewer who was rightfully more critical of the Craig ego than I am here; thus, I will not bother repeating those valid comments. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book when there are so many more objective and exciting forensic science books out there written by true experts who are not afraid to give credit where it is due. I rarely give a book such a low rating, but in this case, it is the author's inflated ego that has earned it and not the material that the book covers.

1 out of 5 stars ZERO stars for this ego trip.......2005-02-05

Emily Craig's egotism was a mild distraction during the first few chapters, but I kept reading hoping for improvement. Midway through the book it was just plain irritating. By the end of the book it was infuriating! Chapter after chapter I was reminded (by DOCTOR Craig herself) how talented, dedicated, and extraordinary DOCTOR Craig is.... uhg! Enough. These adjectives are nice compliments from someone other than YOURSELF.

The most insulting part of this book was the final chapter dealing with DOCTOR Craig's participation in the post-September 11th recovery/identification. Talk about delusions of grandeur. Someone should impress upon DOCTOR Craig the fact that she was a small (replacable) part of the monumental efforts put forth therein New York. Her self-serving discription of her post 9/11 role was an insult to the others who worked along side her. Even when she is praising fellow professionals, it is nauseatingly phoney.

I usually enjoy crime/forensic non-fiction works. "Teasing" had some interesting anthropology/autopssy moments. But they were overshadowed by DOCTOR CRAIG'S ego.

I appreciate a strong, educated professional woman. But not DOCTOR Craig, I think DOCTOR Craig appreciates herself enough for the rest of us!

Two last points: Does DOCTOR Criag really believe that her dying father held on to precious life until she had completed her post 9/11 work? Aand what kind of woman leaves her dog in a kennel for more than a month?

Please do not buy this book, it will only further inflate DOCTOR Craig's already ENORMOUS EGO!

      Book Description

Jacques and his parents are hiding in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, pretending to be Catholics. On the first night of Passover, Jacques and his father elude Nazi soldiers to gather with other Jews and celebrate the Seder in secret. For this book, Doreen Rappaport researched the lives of resistance fighters and Jews in hiding: brave men and women who managed to survive one of the darkest times in history with their faith intact. Emily Arnold McCully's intense and respectful paintings illuminate the perils of a turbulent time and the triumphs of a resilient people.

4 out of 5 stars A Well-Written Story Appropriate for an Older Child.......2005-11-09

The Secret Seder is the story of a young Jewish boy's experience during the time of Nazi Germany. It vividly portrays the fears that were prevalent among Jews at that time. Even the Passover Seder had to be observed in secret.

The book is very well written and the portrayal of events is very accurate. The somber watercolor illustrations add to the darkness of the story.

Although I feel that this is a well-done book, I do not believe that the subject matter is appropriate for a five-year-old as the age recommendation indicates. Some of the text may be too harsh for such a young reader: "Papa yanks me into an alley. The clicking is closer and louder. Papa pulls out the knife. I hold my breath..." This may be a more appropriate book for a child who is eight or nine years old.

5 out of 5 stars Jacques is determined to celebrate Passover with his father.......2005-05-14

The Secret Seder receives Emily Arnold McCully's realistic illustrations as it tells of one Jacques, who is hiding from Nazis in a small village in France, pretending to be Catholics. They haven't given up their beliefs, and Jacques is determined to celebrate Passover with his father, risking his life to attend a secret seder in the mountains.

      5 out of 5 stars A NICE MEMORY.......2000-09-16

This is a book I loved as a child. The high caliber, first rate pencil drawings added to its appeal tremendously.

Emily is a shy 5th grader who moves from town into the country. Shy and extremely private, Emily rues the rural move and is embarrassed about riding on what her peers have called the "farm bus" to school. She years to be part of the elementary school's upper echelon, the Clique-Claque Club and often compromises her standards to be a part of this crowd.

Emily's next door neighbor is a friendly, outgoing girl with seemingly no inhibitions. She is not impressed with the Clique-Claques and is perfectly happy to march to her own drummer. Emily is initially embarrassed to be seen with the girl, but natrual inclinations win out over super imposed prejudices and the pair become friends.

Emily still seeks entrance to the Clique-Claques, so she hosts a slumber party replete with popcorn and ghost stories. Naturally, the girls are delighted and the party gets rave reviews.

The party is so highly endorsed that the head Clique-Claque asks Emily to join. Emily, still chafing over a disatrous horseback ride with the Clique-Claques and their insistence that she have only Clique-Claquers for friends, gently turns down the offer.

This is a book I enjoyed as a child. It brings back nice memories.
