Mr. Trotta gave an excellent glimpse into his life. It was revealing in that he overcame many obstacles seldomly experienced by others. His story I believe gives hope to others striving to live life on their own terms. I want to thank him for his candor and wish him the best of success in the future. I have had the opportunity to met his wife and him in person. They are very unique people and the biography does them justice.

5 out of 5 stars Great For New Grads.......2005-11-29

I recently acquired this book and found the information to be very valuable. I am graduating early from college this December and having never worked in the corporate world before I found the words of this book to be very encouraging and a great tool. I have definitely utilized this book to its fullest extent in my career search and have recently passed it on to many of my friends. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is inexperienced at interviewing or anyone who is looking to brush up on or learn a couple of new skills.

5 out of 5 stars An effective and well researched career book.......2005-11-09

As the author of a recent book on the job market, I was drawn to Monster Careers because of Monster.com's...well, monster reputation in the world of job market resources. The book was a pleasant surprise. Not only did it offer the spectrum of standard interview-conquering exercises and tips one would expect, but it also tackled some of the "softer" issues that can make or break an interviewee: maintaining your confidence level, selling yourself without sounding boastful, establishing a comfortable rapport with the interviewer. This is a great all-around read, and especially helpful for those who need a refresher course on the ins and outs of interviewing.

5 out of 5 stars Interviewing.......2005-09-13

A very insightful book filled with great advice on inteviewing methods. A must read for any candidate - Executives to Engineers who wants to increase their chances of a successful interview and ultimately recieve a job offer.

W. Haden Blackman preys on our more eccentric curiosities with his fact-filled Field Guide to North American Monsters. Even the monster-shy will find it hard not to smile when they read sidebars such as "What does bigfoot eat?" (Everything from acorns and honey to tadpoles and salmon.) Seriously and exhaustively researched, this guide covers more than 100 monsters in the following categories: hairy humanoids, lake monsters and sea serpents, flying monsters, dwarves and giants, cryptid animals (animals heretofore unknown to science), beastmen and beastwomen ("humanoids" with numerous animalistic features), supernatural monsters, and the not readily classifiable enigmatic entities such as the bogeymen, phantom felines, and the infamous Mad Gasser of Mattoon.

Gleaned from Native American legends, American folklore, and modern sightings, this is the first-ever collection cataloging the vast expanse of bizarre creatures inhabiting North America. Laid out like a field guide to birds or mammals, the book helps the reader become familiar with each monster through photos (when available), drawings, and each creature's vital statistics: distinguishing features, range and habitat, diet, the source reporting the monster, and a rating of the likelihood of spotting each creature in the wild.

An avid monsterologist, the author offers useful suggestions for pursuing this rare field of study, including advice for how to behave during a monster encounter and a thorough sample questionnaire to use when interviewing monster eyewitnesses. --Kathryn True

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Urban Legends.......2006-10-18

A decent overview of America's monster phenoms. Not a whole lot on any one subject, but makes for entertaining reading. Everything from Bigfoot to creatures totally unheard of by most. Not bad.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.........2005-06-22

I find this field guide exceedingly interesting, if not frightening. Blackmen tirelessly explains the characteristics of different monsters with factual evidence, pictures, and drawings to create a definite page turner. However, I find a large portion of this book to be chock full of urban legends and myths that simply aren't true. For instance, Blackmen introduces the fact that Earwigs burrow into the ears to eat brains along with many other monsters consuming humans in some way, but this sounds way too farfetched itself to believe. And from what I see, there are no documentations to prove that Bogeyman also exist (confused with child murderers in this book), along with man-eating deer women. However, I find this book very well put together and informative if you can pick out the factual evidence, and is wll worth the money. A definite buy.

5 out of 5 stars STOP WINING AND OPEN UP YOUR MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-26

I've read some nasty reviews here, but rest assured that this book is one of the most organized and interesting you'll ever read on the subject. Personally, I love this book because of the way Blackman combines supernaturalism and cryptozoology into a realistic zoological field guide. Plus, the tips on how to hunt monsters give you something to do on boring days. I can't get enough of the enigmatic monsters in this marvelous book, and I really think you should give it a chance. So open up your mind, open up this book, and let it work its magic. Remember, it may come in handy some day...

3 out of 5 stars pretty silly.......2003-06-30

If you want to learn about crptozoology and look for the truth then this is not for you. While it had some pretty good photos and some ok story's.There was A lot of really stupid stuff like the little section of the likelihood of encountering one of these creatures. And some of the so called monsters like the boogey man,I mean please can't the author take things A little more serios.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2002-07-06

This book is entertaining in that it's humoristic but it also provides some nice insights into Native American as well as local folklore and decent cryptozoology/paranormal info.No it's not Keel,Coleman,or Sanderson, but it's worth reading.

Book Description

Everyone loves something—it’s true! Elmo explains how each person has something special they care about. For example, babies love noise and kids love toys; Bert loves pigeons and pigeons love to coo, and so on. At several points the lively rhyming text breaks for a moment to remind young readers that “Elmo loves you!” This is a natural for Valentine’s Day and a sweet, reassuring poem about love that kids will enjoy year round.

5 out of 5 stars Too cute.......2007-09-26

I actually got this book as one of my Pampers rewards, but am now purchasing it for friends. My 5-month old loves this book and everytime we get to the part where it says "Elmo loves you", she gets a little squeeze from mom.

The rhymes are perfect for using momease and the pictures provide ample ideas for additional commentary when she grabs the book and won't let me turn the page.

My little boy loves this book. It is small and great to pack around in his diaper bag.

5 out of 5 stars Who doesn't love Elmo?.......2007-09-12

My 11.5 month old daughter has had this book for several months now and she loves "reading" it by herself, turning the pages and looking at all the pictures. It is a perfect size for her little hands. When she gets older maybe she'll let me read it to her, but for now she wants it all to herself.

5 out of 5 stars My son's first literary obsession.......2007-09-11

My son read this board book until it fell apart (and that takes some doing) and we had to get another. It's more fun to read aloud than some books for infants/toddlers.

2 out of 5 stars O.K. Nothing great here........2007-07-30

Our 16 month old, who loves Elmo, doesn't like this book too much. It's just o.k.

    Book Description

"I live at 165 East 95th Street, and I'm going to stay here forever." says the young hero firmly. After all, out West nobody plays baseball because they're too busy chasing buffaloes, and you have to ride a horse to school even if you don't know how, and you can't sit down because of the cactus. But his parents are moving West, and they say he has to go, too.

Once there, however, the boy doesn't meet the Gila monsters he expected. And on the ride to his new home (by taxi, not horse) he discovers the West is neither as different nor as bad as he'd imagined.

Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Byron Barton share a keen sense of the ridiculous and a compassionate understanding of a child's anxieties. Together they have created a perceptive, exuberantly funny picture book that will have children in all parts of the country laughing away their own fears about new experiences.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A delightful children's book on moving to Arizona.......1999-06-08

"Gila Monsters" has to be one of my favorite children's books. It addresses the fear of a young boy from New York, whos "parents are moving out west." His friend told him that "Gila Monsters Meet You at the Airport," and he knows it's true, because he read it in a book.

When he finally arrives at the airport, he meets another young boy who is moving to New York and filled with fears, because there are alligators in the sewers. He knows it's true, because he read it in a book.

This book is a great way to defuse a child's fear of an upcoming move. And it's a fun read for adults as well!

5 out of 5 stars Inventive, Funny and Well-Written.......2006-06-08

This is a very cleverly structured book, with endnotes telling a story that runs parallel to the main story. It is very well-written and incredibly funny. My feelings about the characters kept surprising me, which I believe was part of the book's intent. I plan to reread it soon to see what I missed the first time through! A real achievement.

2 out of 5 stars off the deep end.......2006-06-06

I must admit, I bought this book because of the cover. Too bad I actually read it, too. It goes nowhere and not very fast. Why did Ham's wife hate Shoogey from the get-go? Who knows. Diane, why did you edit out Angie's pertinent character development? Diane?

5 out of 5 stars The Title Got Me!.......2006-05-08

I must admit, I bought this book because of the title. It just seemed so different and intriguing. I was not disappointed! It was one of the best books I ever read. I laughed out loud many times! Michael Kun---your writing is brilliant! I was sad to see the book end. Sam Shoogey should live within all of us!

5 out of 5 stars I Really Love This Book.......2006-03-04

It is rare when a writer is able to put together a book that works on multiple levels. Mr. Kun has done that with You Poor Monster, which is the best book I have read in many a year. It is insightful, yet entertaining. It makes you question everything you have read, and everything you think you know. I am tempted to say, "I laughed, I cried, it's the feel-good book of the year," but that would suggest that it's some kind of silly, trifling book. But I did laugh, and I did cry. And I will look forward to Mr. Kun's next book.

5 out of 5 stars A Gorgeously Written Book By A Writer Who Knows More About Baltimore Than This "Adam" Character.......2006-03-04

I picked up a copy of YPM after seeing it selected as "Best Book of 2005" by Baltimore magazine. It is one of the most enjoyable, beautifully written, thought-provoking books I have ever read. As a lifelong Baltimorean, it is great to read a book about my hometown and to see and recognize so many places that I have come to know and love. The last reviewer -- "Adam" -- doesn't seem to know anything at all about Baltimore, and doesn't seem to know anything at all about great writing. And every factual "statement" in his review is WRONG. Pick up this book. You'll love it.

This is one that I ran across at the public library. The teacher in me loves that it has number words, color words, and rhyming words. My kids (boys- ages 4 and nearly 6)love the story, the illustrations, and the humor. From "One giant monster wears a dress, eats the couch, and makes a mess" to "Twenty hungry monsters with nothing left to chew. Better close this book up tight...Before they chew on YOU!" A really cute book!

2 out of 5 stars not very good.......2007-01-16

When I first checked this book out from the library I thought it would be great because it sounded exciting but it was very boring. I was expecting it to be a whole lot scarier. This book is about a group of kids who don't like this girl named courtney because she's a showoff and she thinks shes all that.Throughout the book the kids come up with ways to try to scare courtney. This book would have been a lot scarier if they talked about the mud monsters more and had more scary things happen. When the book actually reached the scary part it didn't last real long. This book was dissapointing and not the best book in the series.

    2 out of 5 stars False Advertising.......2006-08-08

I always felt this book wasn't that great. From the cover you expect the story to focus on those cool mud monsters, but they only appear in the last few chapters. In the meantime there's just a lot of silly antics as the kids come up with various scare tactics that all fail.

Maybe if they'd drawn a different cover I'd like this story more, but I just found most of the book wasted while I waited for the mud monsters to appear.

This book was very exciting. My favorite character was Hat. He was very funny. I also thought that Courtney's dad was funny. It was a GREAT book!

I was addicted to thses books when i was younger and it wasn't until i was majoring in education in college that i figured out why. They were interesting with bizarre plot twists that most 9-12 year olds don't think about they were short [usually between 110-130 pages]. I could read the whole thing in a day.

My parents didn't also have a lot of heartache with buying me a new book because they are relatively inexpensive [in the neighborhood of 3-5 bucks each].

R.L. Stine's Goosebumps books aren't scary, just kind of creepy. There aren't graphic descriptions of murder and mayhem. Just some ghosts. werewolves, or potions. The main character is alive in the end, and the final chapter resolves everything.

**Keep in mind, R.L. Stine has other books that aren't in the Goosebumps series that tend to be harsher when it comes to hauntings and plot. They are written more for the 12-14 age group and are longer [around 150-200 pages].**

5 out of 5 stars Water it down with some sarcasm.......2006-02-24

Just found a book called "How to Negotiatve Like a Child: unleash the little monster within to get everything you want." (by Bill Adler, JR., NY: AMACOM, 2006). I picked up this book because the publisher was AMACOM. AMACOM surely has published lots of practical business skills books, and some of which are quite genuinely innovative, and justifiably controversial, such as "Disicpline without Punishment", "Your CEO is Your Customer" etc.

This "Negotiate like a child" book looks quite thought-provoking, but I guess I don't need to read it page to page, line by line. I am a parent by profession, and I know all about it. So, browsing it would be sufficient. However, I kind of regretted browsing it, because the many principles listed here forced me to see kid behaviors in a new, eerie way, and I dislike that. I see them strategize against me. It's awkward. It's evil. Kids are kids. They try various ways to gain what they want because they are so powerless. They have to improvise and do whatever they can. You don't call them strategies, do you? Only McKinsey does that. I have not heard enough of the song of innocence. All of a sudden, you are tuning in to the song of experience. That's way too much.

The author didn't even stop there. He applies these principles as "negotiation skills" for real negotiation with people who are so less lovely than your child, people like a bad-tempered professor. I use the word "professor" for illustration only. Most of them are cute, I think.

Whether you are going to like this book depends on how much humor you see in this book. If it is Bill Cosby writing it, I would feel everything is right. But it looks like that the humor element is downplayed to allow more room for practical use, and that's where all sorts of problems arise. Behave like kids? One doesn't have to change diapers for the negotiation partner, I hope.

But if you do take it with a sense of irony and sarcasm, you'll enjoy this book. For instance, you see the first principle for negotiation is to throw a tandrum. And there is much truth in what the author has to say: "The calm person feels as if he is the better business person, but the tantrum thrower has walked waway with the prize. ...But don't overuse this ploy, otherwise nobody will want to have lunch with you. You will run a business based on fear rather than respect. You'll mostly be known for your bad temper." This is brilliant stuff.

More interestingly, the author also offers counter startegies if your negotiation partners uses this ploy:

    Enlist the support of others;
    Just let the tantrumer have his rants;
    Pretend the tantrum didn't happen;

I thought this one was great too. Next time some guys I work with gave me trouble, I will ask one of the younger assistants here to throw a tandrum. Roll on the floor. Stomp his or her feet, etc.

But I wouldn't try "win through cuteness" strategy. Because this would spoil all the fun. It would terminate the negotiation process too early. If old men like me try to be cute, I am sure that the negotiation partner will simply throw himself or herself out of the window in an order to escape.

This said, the author gave an impressive list of negotiation skills, some of which are conflicting, which is exactly the way things work for children, and negotiators. As Bill Bryson would say about bears in the Appalachia, sometimes a strategy saves. At another time, exactly the same strategy kills.

Bill Adler Jr.'s How To Negotiate Like A Child: Unleash The Little Monster Within To Get Everything You Want uses the premise that kids are the best negotiators in the world to show how the qualities of determination and stubbornness might translate well to a business environment. These negotiation tactics may be inspired by children, but they offer some real insights; from using tantrums as a 'secret weapon' (if Bill Gates can do it, so can others) to changing the rules and appearing needy.

At first I thought this was going to be another gimmicky business book, but I found myself surprised by its fresh approach to one of the most troublesome areas of business: how to negotiate the best deal.

This book does not suggest that we act like children in the boardroom but rather to take what we know about children's successful techniques for getting what they want and transferring it to the world of everyday business.

For example, we all know how well children pit parents against each other. We are aware of it and we still fall for it. (Not always but enough to make it a valuable bargaining tool in some situations.) Adler shows how to use this technique in negotiations. Simple? Yes. But does it work? You bet.

In another section, Adler discusses optimism. Very few negotiating tools are as strong as going in and knowing that you're going to win. Children do it all the time. We should be doing it, too - at the office.

One of my favorites is acting naïve, like you don't know what the other person is saying. It's a treacherous and powerful technique if done right. I have used it myself.

Different deals require different strategies and this book has more than 50 to choose from.

This book should be on every businessperson's bookshelf.

I am a big fan of Adler's other books and have reviewed several of them. This one is keeping with his tradition of lively writing, strong information and great value.

5 out of 5 stars Cute and Useful.......2005-11-25

When I picked up this book, I wasn't sure just what I had in my hands. The size is smaller than the typical 6X9" business book. At 7.5X6", it's like one of those impulse items at the cash register. The picture of the mean-looking kid on the cover, with a subtitle about unleashing the little monster within you made me wonder if this book would be sarcastic, a parody, or a satire.

What I discovered was a tight little book that, while light-hearted in approach, delivers a pretty good dose of negotiating techniques. When you gain insight into how children negotiate, unwittingly, you can gain some tips and approaches to how to negotiate with adults. The knowledge you gain here will probably not help you negotiate better with kids-that may be fruitless!

As you move through the short chapters, you'll collect all sorts of interesting perspectives on negotiating techniques. The delightful list begins with Throw a Tantrum and continues with tactics like Just Cry, Call in Back-Up, Be Nice, Take Your Ball and Go Home, Play One Side Against the Other, and Change the Subject. There's a good use of adult examples showing how the book's principles have been used by grown-ups who are, after all just kids in bigger bodies.

A strong table of contents and index makes it easy for readers to find their favorite nuggets to re-read them.
