The Hoopster

The Hoopster, by Alan Sitomer, is a compelling book that allows you to see arguably the toughest year of Andre's life. Things look good at first; he has a hot new girlfriend, Gwen, just received a promotion in his job working for a magazine, and is his usual dominant self on the basketball court. Andre's new assignment is to write each month an article about race. Since he is a very bright African-American, his input on the topic becomes meaningful to nearly all the subscribers. One group, however, does not think so highly of his writings. One night when Andre is leaving work, his life forever changes...
The Hoopster is the book for you if you enjoy fast-paced, action-packed, sports thrillers with many unexpected twists. This book is not for a sensitive reader and I would not recommend it to anyone below the middle school level, because the content is not always G or PG. Overall, I think anyone over 12 would truly enjoy this book, and it would open up anyone's eyes about and make the reader think twice before stereotyping another African American.

4 out of 5 stars Rosco Magosco's Book Review.......2007-02-22

The book i read was 'The Hoopster" by Alan Lawrence Sitomer. My book was about a young African Amercin man named Andre. Andre is really good at basketball, maybe even good enough to play proffesional ball. His nickname is the Hoopster. His long life dream is to become a magazine writer. He is a vary talented writer but no one knew it yet. He worked at a magazine editorial, but he was just an errand boy for the writers. Until one day someone had seen an artical that he wrote just for fun and thought he could be good enough to write an article for them, so they offered him an oppertunity to write about racism. The article was spectacular. but not everyone liked it. A man kept herassing Andre, telling him to stop writing or else they would hurt him. Andre didn't listen so one day after work he was walking to his car and a van pulled up next to him. A group of white men came out and beat him, they also kept crushing his hand in a car door. i liked this book because it was about basketball, it also showed that racism is bad and still around. And you shouldn't let people bring you down.

If I had to recommnd a book this would be one of the first book I would tell about. This book was a complete page turner, I would alawys try to find more time to read. If anyone read this book and called it boring I would be astonished because of the fact that I enjoyed this book so much. The plot of this book was really believable. I thought this because I hear about gang related murders and what they do to families on the news all the time

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-03-13

Teddy Anderson is out for revenge. His little sister, Tina, was the victim of a drive-by, gang-related shooting. Her death is explained with the gang label RP, RT -- wrong place, wrong time.

Big brother Andre and older sister Tee-Ay are both away at college. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are both grieving the death of their youngest child in their own separate ways. That leaves Teddy to deal with his emotions in the only way he knows how. He turns to the same violence that cut short his little sister's life.

Arrested for attempted murder, Teddy finds himself in the court system. Surprisingly, he is released to his parents, but the deal involves house arrest, wearing an ankle bracelet, and doing community service for some probation officer with a government-funded program to reform gang members. Teddy reports to Officer Diaz and meets Micah, a twelve-year-old gangsta' wannabe.

The arrangement is for Teddy to work with Micah -- help him with his homework, talk to him about his problems, and generally bond with him so he'll stay off the streets and out of trouble. Teddy is no slouch. He puts in his community service time, but also uses his considerable intelligence and computer skills to hack into the court system to further his plans for revenge.

HOMEBOYZ is the final book in the Anderson family trilogy by Alan Lawrence Sitomer. He brings the dangerous and deadly side of gang violence to life, and at the same time reveals the emotional and touching relationship that develops between Teddy and young Micah. Readers who enjoyed The Hoopster and Hip-Hop High School (Hoopster) will be pleased with this final book. It also works well as a stand-alone for those not familiar with Sitomer's other books.

This is a very original and well thought out book. It has many twists and turns and really makes us look @ our society today and our acceptance of different cultures.
This book is a very daring topic to write about. This book is about racism, and how it nearly stops someone from fulfilling his destiny. It makes us change our minds and rethink sterotypes. It is a awesome book and u wouldthink so too. my favorie part about this book is that it teaches about racism and how people sterotypem others

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 reasons to buy The Hoopster!.......2006-03-20

    5. The Plot:
This is a very original and well thought out plot. It has many twists and turns and really makes us contemplate our society today and our acceptance of different cultures. My favorite line in this book is "If a black person is caught walkin' 'round 'da street at night....he's up to no good. If a white man pays for a cup of coffee with a twenty dolla' bill...he's wealthy. If a hispanic don't speak english while shopping in a store... they're illegal."
    4. The imagery:
The way the author uses words to depict an image in your mind is extodinary. You can hear, feel, see, taste, and smell the basketball games. It is an amazing book filled with tons of imagery.
    3.The characters:
If you are a very multi-cultural person this book is perfect for you. If you are not very interested in other cultures this book is pefect for you. These characters are people who anyone can relate to. These characters are so true to life. When you read this book it's almost as if you known these people for a long time. The characters are phonmonal.
    2.The layout:
The way this book is formated is so something can be happenning one moment, and then in the next paragraph it's two years later.
This is a good layout because it leaves in air of mystery. But don't worry, there is a very complete ending.
    1. The reality to our generation:
This book is a very daring topic to write about. This book is about racism, and how it nearly stops Andre from fulfilling his destiny. It makes us change our minds and rethink sterotypes. It is a very well-written book.

    5 out of 5 stars The hoopster.......2005-12-16

The Hoopster is a good well rounded book about love, family, sports, racism, and finding yourself. Andre Anderson is a good basketball and also a good writer and he writes for his local magazine but when his boss assigns a project to write about racism he writes his report but then he gets beat up by some racist white people he learns alot about himself and life i think this book is really good

    5 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - It Won't Happen to Me.......2005-08-26

In Alan Lawrence Sitomer's novel we meet Andre Anderson, an African-American teen nicknamed, "The Hoopster." Andre is athletic, does well in school, and is an aspiring writer. He has landed the internship of his dreams, working for a small local magazine. His next door neighbor Shawn, although white, is like a brother to him, and at the open of the book, they are enjoying a happy and relatively uneventful summer.

When Andre is asked to write a feature story about racism for the magazine, initially he is put off by the topic. He doesn't think he has experienced racism personally, and feels that a lot of people use race as a crutch instead of assuming personal responsibility. When his boss refuses to let him off the hook, Andre works hard and creates a heartfelt article that gains him a lot of attention. Unfortunately, his article catches the eye of a local hate group and he becomes the victim of a senseless and brutal hate crime that threatens to change his life forever. He must rely on his family, friends (Shawn in particular), and all of his strength to overcome his physical and emotional wounds.

THE HOOPSTER is the first of a planned trilogy of books. The story is well-written, with believable characters and a good pace. As I read, I found myself thinking over and over, how nice it would be to see this book played out on the silver screen. The book has an urban feel, yet it doesn't buy into the prevalent stereotypes and includes young people with positive dreams and goals, who live in two-parent households with caring adults. While the main character is black, the supporting characters come from diverse backgrounds, making this a story that will attract a diverse audience of readers. While girls may enjoy this book, boys, even those who tend to be more reluctant to read, will especially like this engrossing and realistic story.

I enjoyed reading this, but after finishing it, I couldn't help but feel like it was the book equivalent of an "After School Special".

There were all the stock types--the tough on the outside but caring teacher, the best friend who gets into trouble, the brainy, not so flashy guy who turns out to be the ideal boyfriend, etcetera, etcetera. And let's not forget the would be rap star who ends up bagging groceries, to teach the kids a good moral lesson about why they should stay in school!

And then of course, we have to have a happy, happy ending where Tee gets the guy, the car, the college acceptance AND her mother's approval.

Kids will enjoy this. But I've read far, far better stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-22

Meet Theresa Anderson, known to her friends as Tee-Ay. Alan Lawrence Sitomer has captured Tee-Ay's struggle to survive high school and make it to college, and at the same time deal with some serious issues -- drive-by shootings, discrimination, and poverty. HIP-HOP HIGH SCHOOL presents big-city teens with big-city problems in a realistic, yet positive and inspiring story.

As a sophomore, Tee-Ay is finding it difficult to measure up to her older brother, Andre. (His story is told in Sitomer's The Hoopster). He is attending Stanford, and Tee-Ay thinks it would be great to be accepted at USC someday so she could tease Andre when USC kicks Stanford in football. Attending a top-notch university seems like a pretty lofty goal, but Tee-Ay is willing to fight for it.

The story takes Tee-Ay and her fellow classmates through 10th, 11th, and 12th grade to graduation. Along the way she watches one friend, Cee-Saw, become pregnant and drop out, and another almost lose sight of her goals due to family obligations. One positive force in Tee-Ay's life is Devon, who helps her tap into her true potential as they study together for the dreaded SAT -- their ticket to a brighter future.

Sitomer uses hip-hop language to create vivid characters that grab the reader and carry them through right to the end. Big-city teens will be able to relate to the situations, and more sheltered teens will be transported to a world beyond their own.

Note: Although this is listed above as grades 9+, many of my 8th-grade students have read and enjoyed it. In fact, when several of them saw me reading it, they immediately commented about how much they liked it. So many other students are requesting it now, we will probably need to hold some sort of lottery to determine the next reader.

5 out of 5 stars Making Your OWN Way.......2006-06-02

In HIP HOP HIGH SCHOOL readers are introduced to Theresa "Tee-Ay" Anderson. She is the younger sister of her "perfect" brother Andre, who readers of the previous book in this trilogy, The Hoopster, will remember. Theresa is an average student, while her brother is an over-achiever. Even though Andre is off at college, Theresa can't seem to get out of his shadow. Theresa is intelligent, but much to the dismay of her parents, her decisions don't always mirror her smarts. She secretly aspires to attend college, but isn't quite confident enough to share her aspirations. On the outside she is consumed by thoughts of dateless Valentine's Days, hanging with her friends, and fresh hip hop beats, but inside she spends a lot of time contemplating her past mistakes, her fears about the future, and her insecurities. As the story progresses, readers get to know Theresa intimately, and they share in her experiences, which include the temptation of sex and drugs, her struggle for acceptance among her peers. Her friends in the book all seem to model how individual circumstances and decisions can result in strikingly different outcomes. By graduation day, Theresa has changed and grown, she has been through a lot, and many of her relationships have changed, but in the process, she has learned to accept herself and earned the respect of many important people.

Alan Sitomer truly has a gift when it comes to writing fiction from the urban youth perspective. After reading the first book in this trilogy, I was immediately a fan. As I began HIP HOP HIGH SCHOOL, I was admittedly apprehensive about his ability to capture the voice of a female protagonist. After a short while, I was drawn in and captivated by Tee-Ay's character and all of my initial doubts were immediately assuaged. He writes an engaging story, with realistic characters. Reluctant readers are sure to relate to the characters in the story, they talk like teens and are going through experiences that are a universal part of growing up. The frustration they feel with school and parents and the apprehension they feel about the future are all incorporated into the story. The book touches on issues of race, class, and a myriad of social issues that impact teens and models the consequences of good and bad choices. Although HIP HOP HIGH SCHOOL is the second in a series of books, it is a story that can stand alone. HIP HOP HIGH SCHOOL was a satisfying read and I look forward to reading more of Alan Sitomer's work in the future.

This was the biggest wake up call for the world you could ever read. I read this book in less than a month. I read it in school, at home, even on my way to basketball games. It was just that good. It is definitely a true-life type of story that is the one thing that makes you appreciate life a little bit more. I know it made me. This book has, fighting, comical views, love, hate, and just plain old friendship. It is the story of one girl who fights her way through high school in order to not become another dropout and succeeds. She has to fight through drugs, drinks, sex, relationships, and every other thing that a normal teenager has to deal with times 10. There's drunkenness, partying, cliques, shootings, and everything else that should probably not happen in high school or any other school except college. It is the most emotional, hip-hop oriented, and stylish book I have ever read. Two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars the realest 4eva.......2006-04-30

this book is prolly the truest thing that you can read, write, or listen to. I just couldnt live w/out it, and if everyone would read this i think it would make everyone a lil' more appreciative for their life and the place they live. Now i may not live like she does, in fact i dont even come close to that bad of a life and i dont have to experience most of her problems but that doesnt mean that i cant understand what is going on and that also doesnt mean that i can't understand what the truth is. This book not only represents the struggle of one girl, but it also shows the struggles of living in a bad neighborhood. It also expresses how much friends really mean when you need someone to love, hate, or even just chill wit. i would give this book 10 stars but amazon isnt lettin' me. so here they are: ********** =)

          Product Description

From School Library Journal Grade 8 UpAndre Anderson, an African-American teenager, loves to play basketball with his friends, enjoys his job at a political opinion magazine, and is becoming fond of the beautiful Latina girl he was introduced to by his best (white) friend. Set in contemporary Los Angeles, Andre's story unfolds with gritty images, clever banter, and a genuine consideration of the facets of race and racism. Author Alan Lawrence Sitomer (Jump at the Sun, 2005) draws characters that are both realistic and ironic, while narrator J.D. Jackson realizes both the main characters and every minor one with fulsome specificitybright and thoughtful Andre, his clown cousin Cedric, his self-centered sister, his half-deaf father, the gruff magazine editor, and the bad guys, who are white supremacist gangsters. Parental lectures ring true. Andre is allowed the full range of emotions as he gets the opportunity to write a real piece for the magazine, is beaten senseless for speaking out about racism, and bounces back professionally and socially. Sitomer's inclusion of a reference to Native Americans as practicing barbaric acts is just one great discussion point to which listeners can be drawn. The crassness of teenaged boysrude remarks, bodily noisesmay surprise some who think that good literature doesn't present crude behavior. But this is, indeed, good literature, and stellar reading, and is bound to attract both student and teacher fans.Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
