Book Description
A year 2000 Finalist in the ECPA book competition!Accounts of injustice from our own communities and from around the world often leave us feeling outraged and helpless. We wonder what we can possibly do in response. And we wonder where is the God of justice?Jesus, however, said, "Take heart! I have overcome the world." Gary Haugen sees the truth of Jesus' claim vindicated throughout Scripture, which portrays a God who rises up against injustice. He also sees this truth in the lives of sometimes little-known Christians who through the years have courageously confronted evil when they saw it. Here he tells stories of these witnesses of hope in a hurting world. The good news about injustice is that God is against it. God is in the business of using the unlikely to perform the holy, Haugen contends. And in this book he not only offers stories of courageous witnesses past and present, he also calls the body of Christ to action. He offers concrete guidance on the ways and means its members can rise up to seek justice throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
Clarion call to all Christians to wake up to global issues of injustice.......2006-08-28
Haugen is the president of the International Justice Mission, an incredible organization that seeks to demonstrate the compassion and justice of God in nations around the world. The book is first and foremost a defense of this concept - that we, as followers of Christ and children of God, serve a compassionate God who is concerned with and passionate about the particular travesties of injustice in every corner of the globe. Haugen takes the reader through dozens of scriptural passages and principles to make his point and leaves the reader asking what they can do to make a difference in the world.
Haugen next gives the reader not only a bird's eye view of the various injustices across the globe, but also a very personal look at several severe situations of injustice where IJM has made a difference in the lives of real people. Haugen calls for the body of Christ to be a body of action, engaged in various efforts to promote justice and compassion for the lost and hurting. A strategy is presented for the interested, but the primary thrust of the action is done through the channels of organizations like IJM who are already established and connected with resources to assist.
The book is an excellent read for any person who either is ignorant of the conditions of others across the globe or is questioning the concept that one person can't really make a difference. IJM is an outstanding ministry and opportunity for Christians everywhere to use their God-given time, talents and treasure to defend the defenseless. Micah 6:8 is a favorite verse of many and it reminds the follower of Christ what the Lord has told us is important in life - to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. Justice is obviously a key component of God's character and must be a key facet of the ministry of God's people here on earth as a demonstration of His nature and goodness in this lost and dying world. Good News about Injustice is a great reminder of this principle meant to shake a self-absorbed culture from its comfortable La-Z-Boy rocker!
Excellent book.......2005-08-20
I highly recommend this book. I hope to use parts of it with my college students after we have viewed HOTEL RWANDA. This is a powerful follow-up to a movie that should shake you to your foundations.
Keep the faith..........2005-04-12
Sometimes circumstances predispose us towards financial inequality that may further push us towards social inequality and one seems to falsely believe that there is no hope for our own future or for the generations to come. In such circumstances the only way to find a meaningful solution and to get oneself out of this vicious circle is to stand back and look at the big picture. At the heart of the problem are both external and internal factors. While we may not be able to control the external factors directly, being honest to ourselves we must resist the urge to focus solely on them. It is actually our moral obligation to directly address the internal problems, the key to which only we hold. If there is one undercurrent that makes it easier for things to get better, then that is inculcation of unwavering faith and strong family values and truly believing that there is hope for the future. These should not simply cease to exist for us the moment we step outside the church but must be reflected in how we live our lives and that is a profound lesson in life and religion. Closely intertwined with these are the values of gender equality as well as respect and belief in the dignity of every human life. There is no justification in pointing the finger outwards if we, ironically, are lacking the same values within ourselves that we expect others to demonstrate. We must look within ourselves to grow as better human beings. The ability to bring our dreams to realization is closely related to receiving the right education in the context of our innate potential, all held together by a strong and caring social structure that we can grow in. However, for all of this to take place the undercurrent of family values and faith and lasting marriages based on trust and mutual respect must be there. In this regard, from the religious perspective, it is also the responsibility of churches and religious organizations to bring to the limelight positive role models, help clean up bad social trends as well as leave no stone unturned for any broken family to get the much needed social support. Also critical is the need to provide constructive after-school programs as well as logistic and financial support in pushing children in the direction of their talent as well as receiving the right education such that each child is able to turn their dreams to reality...
Highly recommended.......2004-12-01
This book changed the way I think about the world in important and good ways. I've heard the author speak, and he is uniquely credible.
An overdue treatment of a pressing topic.......2000-05-11
In this book Haugen has given us a small taste of our God's advocacy of those who suffer at the hands of illegitimate authority. It is an excellent introduction to the topic for those just starting out, pointing out from Holy Scripture that God hates injustice, and from raw experience of this world's evil that that injustice persists. This book is long overdue, and I hope and pray that many like it will follow.
Compared with the publisher's blurbs, however, I must say that I found the book somewhat disappointing. For those of us working in situations of injustice around the world, the book did not really come across nearly as hard-hitting as the publisher would have us believe. I haven't seen the video yet; maybe it is better. But the book by itself, while it is supremely hopeful, does not capture the poignancy of situations in such a way that would really motivate the reader to action. Perhaps Haugen is relying on TV news broadcasts to do that.
The final chapter, "The Body of Christ in Action," is well-written, and shows some of the important ways that the whole Church can become involved in seeking justice for the oppressed. It deserves a careful reading, even by those who don't feel qualified to work out in the field.

I LOVED This Book!.......2002-03-22
I came to the dialog of gender issues from a feminist perspective. I believed, after becoming the mother of two boys, that I pretty much understood gender issues as they related to boys...that is until my two and half year old wanted to buy purple boots. All of a sudden I found myself concerned (afraid!) of what other mothers and his peers would say (or think) about those purple boots. Without shaming him outloud, I subtly directed him toward the dark blue pair. I was totally amazed at my own fear of bending gender rules for a boy! I would have bought combat boots or any other kind of "boy" attire for a daughter but I could not bring myself to allow him to wear something others might find too "feminine". That was three years ago. After having read this book, I am now noticing all the other ways I have subtly or not-so-subtly directed him along a culturally acceptable gender path. And I consider myself to be a feminist. This book was my first exposure to the idea that I won't harm my boys by allowing them the freedom to express themselves, however that might look. This book was my first exposure to the idea that mothers don't harm their sons by loving them passionately and joyfully. I am so grateful for having read this book and I am going to buy it for at least 3 other mothers I know who are raising boys. This should be required reading for ALL parents of boys!!!
The content belies the title.......2001-03-27
The author is indifferent regarding the development of masculine characteristics. The positive reviews seem to be from readers who sought the book because it reinforces their own predisposition to raising children androgenously. That does not make this a good book.
this is the best book on how to raise boys I have read.......2000-09-18
When I found out I was having a boy, I was distressed, given that I come from a family of all girls and had no experience with boys. I also don't find most men very appealing on a human level. I doubted my ability to have and maintain a close relationship with a boy-man and this was a matter of some sadness to me.
This book exposed my expectations for what they were - socially induced, i.e. mothers shouldn't be too close to their male children, or they will emasculate them, etc. It is a brilliant book with many compelling examples and its arguments are wholly consistent with common sense and instinct. My husband read some of it and thought its hypothesis was obvious, but it is strikingly different in its prescriptions than any other book on raising boys that I have read. (For instance, the "Wonder of Boys," which says mothers have to leave their sons alone, let them be driven by testosterone into competitiveness, roughness, and machoism, and basically seems to take the attitude that mothers are responsible for most problems their boys have growing up.
This is a positive, hopeful book, displaying warmth and compassion, and seems much more pyschologically sound. It should be required reading of all mothers, along with "Real Boys" of Pollock, which is its more recent successor.
Not a feminist tract but..........2000-05-18
When I was pregnant with my second child, my first boy, I worried a lot about raising him successfully when I had almost no family experience with boys (coming from a family with no brothers, and an often absent father). I knew I wanted to help him avoid all the pitfalls of modern manhood (made vivid by a reading of the book, "The McGill Report on Male Intimacy"). All of the books I had read seemed to come from an "Iron John" perspective or be a sort of vague, New Agey feel-good book, but none of them offered concrete steps and clear facts until I read "The Courage To Raise Good Men." Here at last was a book that told me what my heart should have known all along: just love him like he's a child becoming an adult, and don't try to push him at all (he'll grow up even if you don't push!). This book is not written from a feminist perspective but it would suit any feminist's needs in trying to figure out how to raise a boy into a well-balanced human who happens to be male.
Long overdue and wonderfully perceptive.........1999-07-28
I found this book in a baby goods resale shop in Chicago, where our oldest daughter works. We were shopping for a gift for our first grand child. Our youngest son and his precious wife are expecting in a few days. The title intrigued me and after I scanned it I knew I had to get it and see to it that all my 4 read it. I decided when I was having my sons that they were going to grow up knowing how to be husbands and fathers. I had grown up watching my father and brothers beat their chests and try to impress us with their "macho-ness" I wasn't impressed and determined I was going to find a man who was not afraid of his feelings. I managed to find one who was open enough to learn and have been married to him for nearly 40 yuears, and...we still like each other We have managed to raise two young men who are loving , caring, and whom I have an open and loving relationship with. They all still call from their various locations at least once a week and we gave them all video phones so we can all see each other. The neatest part is they are FRIENDS and they all like each other and communicate often. It can be done!! Thank you for bringing the subject to the attention of the multitude of young people who don't have a clue about raising a whole person. Our youngest said he realized a while ago that they are expecting a person, not just a baby. I feel so grateful to have understood my obligation as a woman and mother. This book should be required reading in any parenting class that is taught. Than you for writing the book and Blessings to you and your sweet son. The relationship between a mother and son can be as deliciously rewarding as it is with a daughter. I am purchasing a copy of it for all 4 of our progeny. They will perpetuate the "whole" man and woman.

Book Description
Landon Snow is heading into the darkness, hot on the trail of his younger sister Holly who has set off on a mission of her own. Emerging in the magical realm of Wonderwood, Landon discovers that Holly has been kidnapped by shadowy wolf-like creatures. With the help of his old friends-a horse named Melech, elfish Odds, and the poet/prophet Vates-Landon learns what he needs to do to set his sister free. But he'll need lots of courage. Will Landon be able to rescue Holly from the shadows of darkness and free the Odds from Malus Quidam's evil power?
Customer Reviews:
An imaginative story with fun word play .......2006-10-25
Book Two of Mortenson's imaginative series starts out with the same rich description and fun word play that made the first book (Landon Snow and the Auctor's Riddle) such a pleasure to read.
Main character Landon Snow is joined by his sister Holly in this visit to Wonderwood. What starts out as an adventure quickly becomes a search and rescue mission when Holly is taken captive by the Wolf-Shadows of Malus Quidam. Landon rejoins his friends Melech, Ditty, Hardy and Vates. Together they follow the vision given them from the Auctor which they believe will rescue Holly. With Landon as the leader, each friend has a part to play as the plan begins to unfold before them. They put their faith into action and trust the Auctor for the outcome. "To do the Auctor's will!" becomes the war-cry, and a more potent force there never was. The Shadows are defeated; Holly is set free, and (bonus) Ludo and the Odds are released from their long enchantment.
The book ends sweetly, with the door left open (so to speak) for a return visit to Wonderwood. Landon gets to share his adventure with Holly, and it is hinted that perhaps Bridget, the youngest sister, might get in on the action in the next book in the series (Landon Snow and the Island of Arcanum). This series has an across-the-board appeal, and not just for the younger crowd. Another well-written work by R.K. Mortenson.
Comfortable, but Confusing.......2006-07-31
How can I put this? I do like Landon Snow, both the series and the character. The first book was entertaining, as was this sequel, but that is simply not enough. I'm afraid I'm going to have to list the positives and negatives to get my point across.
POSITIVES
+ Landon and Holly are quirky, likable characters
+ Ditty, Hardy, Melech, and Vates are very... comfortable. They are nice, warm characters in a nice, warm setting. They save the story.
+ Interesting idea of a story
NEGATIVES
+ Too many unanswered/unanswerable questions. Why did Malus Quidam attack with his shadows right then, when he could have any old time, especially since the land of Odds has been vulnerable to his force for years? How did Epops the bird avoid the 'destruction of animals' when Malus Quidam first attacked, and what exactly makes him different then the animals who perished? If some of the shadows 'came from' when Landon first went into the land of the Odds, why didn't he see them constantly since he left?
+ The climax is all over the place. The Auctor has a plan to get rid of the shadows: it doesn't make SENSE though. It all comes together nicely, but half of the things that happened just don't seem to fit. I understand the symbolism, but the story is just unsupported by the climax's confusing conclusion. This could have been done a lot better.
+ What was it all for? Vates/Landon/the Auctor's plan was to trap Malus Quidam and expose him and his shadows to light... Why? To prevent the shadows taking over the Odds? They already DID in the "first coming." Was it to DESTROY Malus Quidam, to kill the Devil? No, because it seems too easy. There seems to be no reason, except to save Landon's sister, but if that was the purpose, they would have stopped at "Phase One" of the plan. Come on now, Mortenson.
I liked the story, but it could have been a LOT better.
6/10
Landon Snow Returns in Book Two.......2006-05-20
Landon Snow's return to Wonderwood isn't at all like he envisioned. Instead of a fun reunion with friends, it has turned into a rescue mission, on two fronts.
The first front is his sister Holly. Lured below the Button Up Library, the (BUL), she's become a prisoner of Ludo, Chief Odd and in charge of the Great Coin. Without Holly, Landon can't return home to his parents, granparents, and youngest sister.
His second front is the worm-like shadows that cover Wonderwood. Dubbed Bookwyrmn by the books in the BUL, they are really the henchmen for Malus Quidam, an evil figure bent on defeating Wonderwood and ruling the Odds. In order to defeat The Shadows of Malus Quidam, Landon needs to remember where his True Strength lies. But defeat them he must, for failure means he and Holly will never leave Wonderwood.
An engaging tale depicting the Landon's battle with the dark Malus Quidam in a magical kingdom.......2006-05-09
Landon Snow And The Shadows Of Malus Quidam by R.K. Mortenson is an engaging tale depicting the Landon's battle with the dark Malus Quidam in a magical kingdom. Presenting children with an engagingly vivid and thoroughly entertaining style of authorship, Landon Snow And The Shadows Of Malus Quidam is an intriguing page-turner for young readers as they discover a greater portion of the deceptive intent of Malus Quidam in the evils which he so lovingly projects unto the struggling world of Landon Snow's friends and family. Landon Snow And The Shadows Of Malus Quidam is very highly recommended reading for all young readers with an interest in a magical realm, especially to those already following the "Landon Snow" series.
When the shadows come.......2006-04-30
Landon Snow And The Shadows Of Malus Quidam is about Landon going back into the mysterious world of Wonderwood and the Echoing Green; but this time it is a little different from last time. Landon takes his sister in the mystery world; then Landon is told that Shadows have come and invaded their world with darkness. Only Landon and his friends and the Odds can stop the shadows and the empty darkness and set Ludo free from his spell. It is a great book and I recommend that you read it.

Book Description
Plato's thinking on courage, manliness and heroism is both profound and central to his work, but these areas of his thought remain underexplored. This book examines his developing critique of the notions and embodiments of manliness prevalent in his culture (particularly those in Homer), and his attempt to redefine such notions in accordance with his ethical, psychological and metaphysical principles. It further seeks to locate the discussion within the framework of Plato's general approach to ethics.

Locket is a plus.......2006-11-13
My granddaughters enjoyed the book while learning about responsibility, perservance and faith in oneself. What girl doesn't like horses! Having the locket made the book unusual. I would recommend it.
Book report about The Good Luck Pony by Catherine Marie Fox.......2000-04-18
This book is about a girl who loved horses like I do. She always wanted to ride a real one and go very fast. Then one day she took some riding lessons. First, she learned how to guide the pony by using it's reins. Each week she took her pony around a circle with some other girls. One day she had to ride a different pony. She felt very unconformable on the new pony. Then all of a sudden the pony took off while the little girl went with him getting hit in the face with branches. Then the instructor ran with her pony and grabbed the reins. The little girl's pony stopped. Then... Find out yourself when you order it. I loved this book because it is about horses which I love and it has perfect words so I can read it easier. Also I love it because it has a charm which is a gold horse with a gold chain. It is very pretty. I think it was a good story because it teaches you how to be brave. I think you would love it if you love horses. I am collecting all of Elizabeth Koda-Callan's books which is also called Magic Charm books. She's my favorite author because she writes all about little girls with different stories. Elizabeth Koda-Callan now lives in New York city. You can read more about her in the back of the pages from "The Good Luck Pony."
A must-read book for youngsters........1999-10-02
This book is an easy-to-read book which is great for young children just starting to read, to help read better.

I recomend this book be given as a gift to any little girl that has just started to ride. this is a wonderful book.

An invaluable contribution to Civil War reference shelves........2006-11-05
Keep Up Good Coverage: The Correspondence of Cpl. Lewis Q. Smith of Sandwich, New Hampshire, Fourteenth Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers 1862-1865 collects the correspondence and diaries of an ordinary man who, along with half his small New Hampshire town, volunteered to fight in the American Civil War. Author Alan Fraser Houston offers far more than just an assembly of transcribed writings; his narration places each letter or entry in explicitly detailed context of both historical events and personal happenings in Smith's life. Endnotes, an extensive bibliography, and an index round out this intimate portrait of the Civil War and its repercussions from a ground soldier's eyes. An invaluable contribution to Civil War reference shelves.

Interesting, but has some holes.......2006-08-15
The book begins as Tie-Dye Rainey and his mother, Jasmine, become christened into a reclusive religious community called the Kingdom. Ty is given the new name, Tobias. His mother becomes Jordana. Ty has grown up moving from one place to another, his mother in search of an elusive happiness by joining various communes and utopian communities. Ty has always tried to make the best of it, and always tries to find the good in every situation. But the Kingdom is a harsh place for kids like him, and he has trouble finding anything good about the place. Kids work seven days a week in the field, or doing other chores, and are punished for bad behavior by being given fast days where all they get is water. Ty discovers that there is not even a school in the Kingdom. He befriends a girl named Samarah, who is considered a devil child by the rest of the Kingdom because her parents up and left one day, "embracing Satan" in the place known as Out There (everywhere that is not Kingdom grounds). Together, Sam and Ty try to figure out a way to escape the Kingdom.
This was an interesting book and I finished it pretty quickly. There were some holes, though. For one thing, very little background is given about Ty and his mother. Their past is alluded to occasionally, but we aren't given details. It would have been helpful to hear about what life was like for Ty in the places he lived before coming to the Kingdom. A passing reference to some place he used to live in is confusing without more explanation. There is a man named Polaris, from the Home Place, where Ty and his mother once lived. But how long they were there, what it was like, and why they left, is never explained.
The mother's behavior is never explained very well either. We are told only that she doesn't like the responsibilities of the world Out There, and is scared of money. We are not told why. In addition, the character of the mother isn't very well-developed, and while I realize the story is about Ty, not his mom, I felt that she was a really transparent character. Whenever we see her, she's either really joyful, or breaking down in tears. And it seems hard to believe that she would not listen to her beloved son when he tells here what Kingdom life is like for kids.
wonderful book.......2001-09-18
Personalay I enjoyed this book to me it was very touching. The young boy, Ty, is nice and wants the best for his mom. Even if it means spending the rest of his life in a kingdom where shing and child play is a sinful. Children who are sick must still work in the fields or for the girls doing the kingdom's landray. Ty finds himself in a tough sution and won't give up. This story gave me the fealing of many scared childern's
bravy to surive in this world to wich their parents brougth them.
I think you should read this wonderful book and learn of childern's fatith t live.
(Kids in 7th grade, like me will love this story!!!!!:)!!!!!!!)

A good courage not a good book.......2000-03-11
WOW! Bad book. I gave this book one star because it felt good to end the pain. If you want lots of cult facts this isnt the book for you. If you want a not very enjoyable read....READ THIS! What was the author thinking when she wrote this. It wasnt cool it wasnt funny it was bad.!
A Great...not Good...but Great Courage.......2000-01-31
This book, A Good Courage, was very, very good. Stephanie S. Tolan has written extremely well about the life of Ty in the Kingdom of Yahweh. She is probably very knowledgeable about religion and has potrayed what religion can not be... slavery...of kids. If anything, this book had a few complex ideas, and only 10 and above can read this book. That is the only reason I did not rate it 5 stars. This book, again was very, very good, and I would recommend it to children over 10.
