Book Description
When it comes to love, how many chances do you get?
Girl meets prince. Girl looses prince. Girl gets prince back -- right? Well, that's what Valerie is hoping. She's back in Schwerinborg after spending some time with her mother in the good ol' US of A, and hopes that sparks are still flying between her and Georg. At first it looks like things are going great, until a ski trip to the Alps has Val and Georg's romance hitting some moguls. Could Val's love life be heading for a face-plant?

this book was okay........2007-08-15
I wouldnt call this book one of my favorites but it was a cute book. I have my attention for about half of the book and then i put it down. I think people that love the romantic secret love thing will like this book. but the book is kind of slow for about four chapters.
Eh. but good.......2007-04-22
It was sort of boring at first. But it got interesting in the sense that makes you think that you can totally relate to the stuff written in it. Well, maybe without the Schwerinborg-if that's how you spell it-thing, or with it depending where you live and stuff like that.
OK but not great.......2006-11-19
I've loved both Royally Jacked and Spin Control. I excitedly bought her third book in the series, expecting it to be as good as her last two. I found Do-over a little boring. I didn't feel the same excitement. The same lovable characters are there but something in Nikki Burnham's writing is not. The plot moves really slowly and nothing exiting really happens. There isn't much focus on the conflict in the plot and there is only one little mishap while Valerie and Georg are skiing. Other than that the book was sweet and I really like Georg's character. I would still recommend reading it. If you havn't read RJ and SC I deffinitely suggest reading them.

Book Description
Valerie Winslow never thought life in the tiny country of Schwerinborg could be so great.
But then she never thought she would be dating the prince of Schwerinborg either! Georg, a real prince, is also her first real boyfriend.
And then everything falls apart. Georg's decided they need to cool off for a while and her dad's sending her back to Virginia to visit her mom.
Valerie's bummed -- until she decides to go out with her old crush, David Anderson. David may not be a prince, but maybe he'll take her mind off of Georg -- or will he?

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-07-02
When we last left Valerie, she had moved to Schwerinborg with her father after her mother dropped the news that she was gay. After arriving, Valerie set her eyes on Georg, the royal family's very cute son. And in the end Valerie got the guy and is beginning to get used to her new life in Schwerinborg.
Valerie Winslow is back with a whole new set of problems. Turns out dating a future prince isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. What with all the cameras and reporters tracking your every move, and the tabloids hungry for some juicy inside news, it sure doesn't help when you are caught in the bathroom with the prince -- and when a pack of cigarettes falls out from behind the toilet.
But when a newspaper takes the story a little too far, the entire royal family and their staff that handles public relations are trying to make things right. With all the pressure, though, Georg decides that he and Valerie need to "cool off" for awhile, but what exactly does "cool off" mean? Valerie's father thinks this is the perfect time for a visit with her mother, while things settle down in Schwerinborg.
Going back home shouldn't be so bad, what with getting to hang out with her friends and her mother. But it turns out that alerie's "relationship" with Georg made headlines in Virginia, and now her friends all know what Valerie has been keeping from them. To make matters worse, Valerie still hasn't told them about her mother and her girlfriend.
Going back to Virginia does have its advantages when Valerie decides to go on a date with her longtime crush, David Anderson, who apparently has had his eye on her since she left. Will going out with David help Valerie decide if he is the right one for her? Or will it just make her miss Georg even more?
SPIN CONTROL is the perfect follow up to the last novel, Royally Jacked. The author makes Valerie stronger than ever, what with all the issues she has to deal with. Not only that, but SPIN CONTROL delves deeper into the issue of having a parent or any family member that is gay and helps us see it in a whole new light. This is another great read from Niki Burnham, who never seems to disappoint.

Great.......2005-08-01
My friends and I all read and loved Royally Jacked (the prequel about a girl who falls in love with a prince). When we finished, we were like, "Thats it! Where the heck is the rest?!" So you an imagine how excited we were when we found out about Spin Control. It picks off right where Royally Jacked leaves off.
This book is GREAT. Though I like Royally Jacked better, this comes pretty close to a tie. It touches bases with some very important issues. The question of "can you make a true 'connection' with two different people comes up. The book also brings in the whole "My mom is a lesbian" issue without going into any 'physical' details. Which makes it suitable for even young readers. I really enjoyed it.
Even Better than Royally Jacked!.......2005-03-25
Niki Burnham's sequel to Royally Jacked is even better than the first. Spin Control takes place right where Royally Jacked leaves off with Valerie finally getting her Prince. But her life isn't the fairy tale she thought it would be when the newspapers start a horrible rumor about her. Her life begins to spin out of control. Then Georg suggests they "cool off", and a confused Val heads home to spend Winter Break with her mom and unfortunately her mom's girlfriend, Gabrielle. Back home she has to face her friends who still don't know that her mom has come out of the closet and are already mad at her for not telling them about her relationship with Prince Georg. But things start to pick up when her old crush David pops back into the picture.
Spin Control answers all the unanswered questions Royally Jacked left. Burnham delves into Val's relationship with her mother and the secrets she had kept from her friends. And we find out whom her heart truly belongs to. It's a lighthearted comedy that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. If you haven't read either book, you should order them both today. You won't be disappointed.
Niki Burnham does not disappoint!!!.......2005-03-17
Niki Burnham is now one of my favorite authors. She captured me with "Royally Jacked" and stole my heart with "Spin Control".
These books are just completely awesome! If you are into teen comedic romances, than you should totally be reading these books.
"Spin Control" picks up right where "Royally Jacked" left off. In this one the main character Valerie has to go back to the States, after living in a German palace for a month, because of a little media problem shes having with her new bf. But home doesnt get any better. There are several issues she has to face with her friends and her mom, who just came out the closet. Going home also makes her have to decided who she wants to be with: David, the guy shes been crushing on forever who is FINALLY starting to notice her or Georg, her prince who really gets her and doesnt judge about the whole gay mom thing.
Though its probably true that a prince doesnt fall in love with an ordinary girl, all the time, its concept and meaning are completely heart felt and relatible. You'll love every part of it!
Fabulous Sequel to 'Royally Jacked'.......2005-03-09
Valerie Winslow seriously had her doubts about how life in the small country of Schwerinborg would treat her, but once she began dating Prince Georg, those doubts dissolved, leaving her blissfully happy. After all, Georg is a Prince - just like in all those fairytales - but he's also Val's first true boyfriend. Unfortunately, just when everything is going absolutely perfect, it all falls apart. Tabloids throughout the world begin running pictures of the two teens, depicting their relationship, and accusing the both of them of being promiscuous, doing drugs, drinking, and smoking, which is all totally untrue. The most Val and Georg have done is make-out a few times. Val feels that the two of them will be able to make it through this, but Georg has his doubts, and informs Valerie that they should "cool off for a while." And that is how Valerie ends up at her mom's apartment in Virginia. Valerie couldn't be more bummed, until she finds out that her old crush, David Anderson, wants to go out with her. Valerie jumps at the chance. After all, David may not be a Prince, but he may be the perfect distraction...
Niki Burnham has done it again, and created a sequel in SPIN CONTROL that definitely challenges it's predecessor ROYALLY JACKED. As always, Valerie's hilarious freak-out persona, and worry wart tendencies make her a lovable character, who steals the show. While her friends and their many wacky e-mails will have the reader laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Filled with many fantastic "romantic" situations, SPIN CONTROL is sure to please readers. I only hope that Niki Burnham decides to write yet another book about Val's adventures in romance.

Chloe Rand seems to have the perfect life. She's about to start her junior year of high school, she has a great boyfriend and a close group of girlfriends, and she's incredibly gorgeous. But when her boyfriend moves across the country, dumping her at the airport right before he leaves, everything seems to fall apart.
Now Chloe realizes that being a stunningly beautiful, suddenly single girl at high school isn't easy. Guys aren't sure how to treat her, girls don't trust her, and Chloe's junior year isn't going at all as planned.
Chloe decides to take charge of her own life and get out of the bubble she's been living in, but when the first thing she does is fall for Billy, who is a complete geek and totally out of the range of the "old Chloe," will it make things easier, or harder?
I've really enjoyed all of the Simon Romantic Comedies, particularly Niki Burnham's other contributions, and SCARY BEAUTIFUL is no exception. It's a great book that really challenges the "popular girl" stereotypes, and teens are sure to have fun reading it.

Burnham at her best!.......2007-07-29
I loved every word of this book! I could not put it down. I love the big message in the book about stereotyping. Def. an important message for everyone, especially in High School. And way its addressed in the book is great! Not so preachy but seen from another side.
Summer is at an end and Chole's 2 year relationship with her boyfriend, Sean, comes to an end unexpectatly when Sean moves across the country. Now her no longer being part of a couple she starts seeing herself as a whole new person. Her friends on the other hand are pushing her to get back with her ex and try the long distance thing. But is her new found self better than she was just seen as Sean's girl friend? or does it have something to do with the mysterious guy from her fave pizza hangout?
I completely enjoyed reading this book. The events and characters are very realistic. And I can not wait to read this one again!
Rough start (for me) but soon grew to love it........2006-05-10
Okay, i was so excited to get back to SImon pulse romantic comedies i love so dearly, and this was the first one i read. in the beginning it really bothered me, and confused me, how all chloes friends kept telling her that if she didnt have a boyfriend everyone would hate her cos she was pretty. it made no sense why they would say that! and not very "Friend"ly. i dunno it bothered me. and then the small fact that chloes friend saw billy first.... HOWVEVER! i absolutely fell in love with this book. i read it in just a couple days, and it was hard to put down. I really loved it.
Unexpected Love = Great Read ! .......2006-02-24
Chloe Rand's life couldn't be any better. She's about to start her junior year in high school, has an amazing boyfriend, a great group of friends, and top of all that, is stunningly beautiful. She loves her life, and feels great about herself. Until she finds out her long-term boyfriend is moving away, and he breaks up with her at the airport before she leaves. She's devestated, and starts her school year not really looking foward to things to come. Especially when she finds out how the kids are treating her at school, all because she is gorgeous and now recently single. She finally learns to get over her ex-boyfriend, and meets a geeky and unattached guy. She gets along great with him, the only catch: one of her best frieds is also interested in him. Through a series of struggles and emotions, Chloe is able to put her life on track, and ends up with the guy that is the best for her, no matter how unexpected.
Turning the tables.......2006-01-09
What I really liked about this book was it turned the table on the "prettiest girl in school" stereotype. In a lot of books and most every teen movie, the prettiest girl in school is always the biggest witch who rules the school with the popular gang and always gets her way. However, Niki Burnham has twisted this by making the pretty girl, Chloe, a really interesting and complex character, very down-to-earth and self conscious of her looks and how they affect other peopl. Chloe's heart is broken when she's dumped by her long-time boyfriend, but she resolves to make the best out of the school. She's fiercely loyal to her friends, works hard at not being the star of the school gossip mill, and when a chance to better herself comes along, she joins the cross-country team and starts hanging out with a "geeky" boy, Billy. The relationship between Chloe and Billy is sweet and believable and their chemistry is great. Sure, a lot of silly teen angst things happen in Chloe's life, but through her honesty and perseverence, so comes out on top. Niki Burnham's dead-on writing of teens really won me over and I can't wait to read more of her books. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Valerie's life is pretty good. While she's not the most popular girl in school, she does have decent grades, great friends, and a potential boyfriend. All a girl could want.
Then her mother announces that (1) she's gay, and (2) she's leaving Valerie's dad for her girlfriend. Not what Valerie envisioned for her future. And just when Valerie is getting over this bombshell, her father tells her he's gotten a new job as protocol chief for the royal family of some obscure European country.
Valerie's world has come unglued. She can either stay in Virginia with her mom and her über-organized, veggie-burger-eating girlfriend, or go with her dad, leaving everything she knows for some place she's never heard of. Valerie opts to go, and quickly discovers that it was a mistake -- until she meets the prince, and all bets are off!

Valerie Winslow, like any other girl, thought that she had it all: the perfect friends, the perfect family, and the perfect crush. But her world turns upside down and soon Valerie begins to question her whole life. Her mother decides to tell the family, at the dinner table, that she cannot continue in her marriage because she is gay and is going to move out and live with the new love of her life, who happens to be a woman.
Unfortunately, her mother's news not only effects Valerie, but also her father, who breaks the news that the very conservative politician that he works for doesn't believe that he should have an employee who married someone who is gay. But instead of losing his job, the politician finds Valerie's dad another one, just until after the re-election, all the way in Schwerinborg, some European country.
So now Valerie has to make a decision. She can either stay with her mother and her girlfriend in their new apartment, go to an entirely different school, and possibly have a chance with her longtime crush, David Anderson, who is finally showing some interest in her. Or she can go all the way around the world and stay with her dad, who is helping the royal family.
Valerie decides that it's best to go with her dad, maybe so she doesn't have to tell her friends the real reason why her parents got divorced. When she arrives at her new, yet very ugly apartment, Valerie discovers a surprise, a very cute one. Turns out the royal family has a son who is just one year older than Valerie, and isn't too shabby to look at. Maybe moving to Schwerinborg wasn't such a bad idea after all.
ROYALLY JACKED is both unique and hilarious in so many ways. Niki Burnham creates a story that is so unusual and so very cute that it leaves a smile on your face. The relationship with Valerie and her dad and the one with Georg, the son of the royal family, all make ROYALLY JACKED worth the read.
Be sure to watch for the other books in this series, Spin Control (Simon Romantic Comedies) and Do-Over (Simon Romantic Comedies).

fun read.......2006-08-14
Valerie Winslow's life has been turned upside-down. First, her mother announces that she's gay and is moving in with her girlfriend. Then, her father announces that he's being transferred from helping the President in Washington, D.C. to helping the royal family in Schwerinborg (or Smorgasbord, as most of Valerie's classmates call it), a tiny European country somewhere around Germany. Not wanting to face facts about her mother, Valerie moves to Schwerinborg. At first Schwerinborg seems kind of gray and dull, but then Valerie meets Georg, and things are looking up. But when she finds out that, in fact, he's Prince Georg, she isn't sure if it will go anywhere. She tries to find out if he's interested, while also trying to learn German so she can understand what everyone is saying, and she's in for some surprises. Another great book from Simon Romantic Comedies.
He is so HOTT!!!!!!.......2005-08-06
This book is a story about a girl named Valerie. Her life is turned in the direction of weird when her mom anouccnces that she wants a divorce because she has found a new love. With another woman!! With this scary detail in mind Valerie's dad has been called on business to a small unknow country in Europe to be a royal chef.
One good thing does happen to her though. When in the library trying to figure out her new school test she mets the Prince. Prince Greog.
To find out more read Royally Jacked.
And remember even if the begining is boring keep going cuz the book does get better and continues to do so.
So enjoy:)
A cute love story.......2005-06-06
Royally Jacked was a cute, fluffy story about a teenage girl, Valerie, who has to choose between staying with her gay mother or opting for a life in a foreign country after her parent's divorce. She chooses to leave her friends and crush behind to follow her father to his new job in Europe. At first she regrets her decision, but then she meets Prince Georg and things aren't as bad as they seem. It was a short, easy-read novel with a cliffhanger ending that kept me reading the entire time. The "gay parent" plot wasn't necessary in my opinion and didn't really fit in with the plot of the story. On the contrary, the slightly predictable love story was an enjoyable read. Otherwise, I think Niki Burnham put together an appealing novel the many teenage girls would enjoy.
Royally Good.......2005-05-31
We thought that this book was pretty good. It reminded us of the Princess Diaries series. We could relate to Royally Jacked better than other books because of the first-hand prospective of Valerie. We would recommend this book for children ages 13-16. Even though it wasn't perfect, it still rated high in our minds. If you like reading teen-girl books and are in for a good read, read Royally Jacked.

I love Koestler. Don't start here........2004-07-08
The Call-Girls is a novel evidently intended as a "popularization" -- since people like to read novels! -- of ideas that Koestler covered more exhaustively in his book-length essays, in particular The Ghost in the Machine and Janus: A Summing Up. The fictional structure is really little more than a skeletal frame into which Koestler has dumped (sometimes verbatim) arguments that he formulated elsewhere: A dozen "quirky" professor-types (one giggles, one blushes, one's outspoken and gay, one does ten things at once, etc.) -- the jetsetting symposia-attending call-girls of the title -- come together in Switzerland to discuss how mankind is to be saved from itself. So that's what they do. As story, this is less than gripping; and either of the abovementioned nonfiction titles will serve as a better introduction to Koestler's ideas, which ARE gripping.
Is it live or is it....?.......2000-07-01
As an academic novel, Koestler's Call Girls has relatively little to recommend it, perhaps in part because it cuts so close the bone. Reading Koester's description of a small conference of academic "call girls" is all too similar to the real thing. The pompous posturing and politicking of such a group is every bit as tedious on the printed page as it is in person. If one is looking for an enjoyable academic satire, try David Lodge's Changing Places or Small World, try Richard Russo's Straight Man, or even try Jane Smiley's Moo; for a somewhat more serious expose, try Carl Djerassi's Cantor's Dilemma.
Not that I wish to dismiss this work entirely; Koestler's novel is far more successful as a bleak commentary on the direction of the human race, mostly due to the two brilliant short pieces which frame the centeral academic tale. These pieces remaing brilliant and haunting despite the dry centerpiece.
Hilarious Parody of Academic Jet-Setters.......1999-09-16
Koestler, best known for "Darkness at Noon", left us a satire of modern academe easily on a par with "White Noise". The book revolves around the smarmy and cynical personalities of several distinguished academics who are attending a conference, and offers readers a novel of ideas which asks disturbing questions about the relationship of intellectuals to society.

A Great American Girl Play!.......2005-06-06
I did this play with some of my friends and it was great! We had great backdrops and everything! Everybody that saw it loved it. It got quite funny at times. The charcters are well crafted ,so it all fits in to the hularious play Hairum Scarum. The charcters are:
Olivia: The owner of the Fantastic Frills Hair Salon.
Hilda: A hairdresser at Fantastic Frills Hair Salon.
Goldilocks: A girl with a bear of a problem.
Rapunzel: A maiden trapped in a hairy situation.
Alice:A girl who's late for a very important date.
Briar Rose: A sleepy princess with a bad case of"bed-head".
Cinderella: A girl who's lost her glass shoe-and her heart.
All the characters are very funny. The production guide helped alot with how the scenes and everything were supposed to go.The play was a big success! I also reccomend Check Under the Bed and What a World (Other American Girl Plays). This is one play you don't want to pass by!
this is an okay play.......2000-06-19
I didn't really like this play. The other two American Girl plays are GREAT, though. I don't know why, but this just didn't appeal to me. I strongly recommened Check Under the Bed:A Mystery, and What a World:A Musical.
Excellent - Great fun for children!.......1998-05-19
This is a comedy published by the Pleasant Company that does the American Girl Collection. Goldilocks, Rapunzel, Cinderella and others converge at a salon to talk about life, love, and hair! A new color for Goldilocks? How about something short for Rapunzel! With stories to match, the book characters come out with a new identity and a new outlook on life! Easy to stage and with witty dialogue, this will be great for young girls to put on in the neighborhood. The kit comes with everything - including scripts, a Director's book, tips on acting, posters, and even tickets! Your children can learn not only about acting, but how to all pull together to make this show a hit!
I strongly recommend it as a must activity for the summer.

Book Description
"I've done everything in the theatre except marry a property man," Fanny Brice once boasted. "I've acted for Belasco and I've laid 'em out in the rows at the Palace. I've doubled as an alligator; I've worked for the Shuberts; and I've been joined to Billy Rose in the holy bonds. I've painted the house boards and I've sold tickets and I've been fired by George M. Cohan. I've played in London before the king and in Oil City before miners with lanterns in their caps." Fanny Brice was indeed show business personified, and in this luminous volume, Herbert G. Goldman, acclaimed biographer of Al Jolson, illuminates the life of the woman who inspired the spectacularly successful Broadway show and movie Funny Girl, the vehicle that catapulted Barbra Streisand to super stardom. In a work that is both glorious biography and captivating theatre history, Goldman illuminates both Fanny's remarkable career on stage and radio--ranging from her first triumph as "Sadie Salome" to her long run as radio's "Baby Snooks"--and her less-than-triumphant personal life. He reveals a woman who was a curious mix of elegance and earthiness, of high and low class, a lady who lived like a duchess but cursed like a sailor. She was probably the greatest comedienne the American stage has ever known as well as our first truly great torch singer, the star of some of the most memorable Ziegfeld Follies in the 1910s and 1920s, and Goldman covers her theatrical career and theatre world in vivid detail. But her personal life, as Goldman shows, was less successful. The great love of her life, the gangster Nick Arnstein, was dashing, handsome, sophisticated, but at bottom, a loser who failed at everything from running a shirt hospital to manufacturing fire extinguishers, and who spent a good part of their marriage either hiding out, awaiting trial, or in prison. Her first marriage was over almost as soon as it was consummated, and her third and last marriage, to Billy Rose, the "Bantam Barnum," ended acrimoniously when Rose left her for swimmer Eleanor Holm. As she herself remarked, "I never liked the men I loved, and I never loved the men I liked." Through it all, she remained unaffected, intelligent, independent, and, above all, honest. Goldman's biography of Al Jolson has been hailed by critics, fellow biographers, and entertainers alike. Steve Allen called it "an amazing job of research" and added "Goldman's book brings Jolson back to life indeed." The Philadelphia Inquirer said it was "the most comprehensive biography to date," and Ronald J. Fields wrote that "Goldman has captured not only the wonderful feel of Al Jolson but the heartbeat of his time." Now, with Fanny Brice, Goldman provides an equally accomplished portrait of the greatest woman entertainer of that illustrious era, a volume that will delight every lover of the stage.

Herbert Goldman's "Fanny Brice: The Original Funny Girl".......2005-09-06
This is a great biography of a great entertainer. Many beautiful photos of this dear, wonderful performer and
this author does a fine job of telling Fanny Brice's
story! After seeing the two Streisand movies, this book
does an excellent job in providing an unvarnished version.
Entertaining and enlightening. I highly recommend it!
one of the most unbiased, yet loving tributes to a real star.......1999-03-13
I had the pleasure of reading FANNY BRICE by Herbert Goldman when it first came out in 1992. I am sorry that it is now out of print, as it is one of the most detailed writings on a stage/vaudeville star I have ever encountered. From her early struggles, to the height of her stardom, to her untimely death, this grand lady lead a memorable life that few can ever hope for. This lady conquered every medium she went out for. It should be read by young people aspiring to the arts to show them just how real troupers their ancestors really were......Mr Goldman also wrote the definitive book on another great, Al Jolson..I am looking forward to the one that he is writing now on Eddie Cantor. What a perfect trilogy on old Broadway......Kudos to you Mr Goldman...
