Book Description

In her exuberant new work, Marion Meade presents a portrait of four extraordinary writers-Dorothy Parker, Zelda Fitzgerald, Edna St.Vincent Millay, and Edna Ferber- whose loves, lives, and literary endeavors embodied the spirit of the 1920s.

These literary heroines did what they wanted and said what they thought, living wholly in the moment. They kicked open the door for twentieth-century women writers and set a new model for every woman trying to juggle the serious issues of economic independence, political power, and sexual freedom. Here are the social and literary triumphs and inevitably the penances paid: crumbled love affairs, abortions, depression, lost beauty, nervous breakdowns, and finally, overdoses and even madness.

A vibrant mixture of literary scholarship, social history, and scandal, Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin is a rich evocation of a period that will forever intrigue and captivate us.

4 out of 5 stars Slightly Superficial But Extremely Engaging.......2007-03-15

With BOBBED HAIR AND BATHTUB GIN writer Marion Meade takes the reader on a decade-long tour of the lives of four women who helped make the 1920s roar: Edna Ferber (1895-1968); Zelda Sayer Fitzgerald (1900-1948); Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950); and Dorothy Parker (1893-1967.) Although all four were distinctly different, all four shared certain traits. They were of a generation of women who considered themselves "emancipated." Generally based in New York City, all four proved globetrotters to at least some extent. And all four were writers, and their work was shaped by the decade just as it shaped the decade in turn.

The 1920s saw Edna Ferber rise from the status of a commercial hack to the critically lauded author of such novels as SO BIG and SHOW BOAT and co-author of such plays as THE ROYAL FAMILY. Determinedly independent, Ferber's character would cast an even longer shadow than her works, setting a pattern for single, hard-working, career women that would last decades. Zelda Sayer Fitzgerald, wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, was Ferber's polar opposite: a woman whose career was marriage but who didn't feel it should crimp her style. Along with husband Scott, she would party her way into self-destruction--and provide significant inspiration to Fitzgerald's novels as well. As the 1920s passed, Zelda would discover a gift for prose and publish several short works, but mental illness began to claim her as the decade came to a close.

Edna St. Vincent Millay was a critic's darling who--when she wasn't writing poetry--spent much of the decade sleeping with any one, male or female, who appealed to her. As well known for her personal charm and eccentricity as for her work, Millay endured numerous difficulties in the decade before emerging as America's most highly regarded poet and then, rather perversely, find critical reaction began to turn against her in the face of works by the likes of T.S. Eliot. And then, of course, there is the truly legendary Dorothy Parker, who began the decade as a drama critic and slowly rose to fame through her remarkably funny and acid poetry. A truly dark figure, like Zelda Fitzgerald and Millay she too would struggle with a host of inner demons ranging from alcohol to drugs to bad relationships.

These four women, their lovers, husbands, publishers, and associates crisscross throughout the book in an interesting counterpoint. The result is always readable, always entertaining, but it does contain certain flaws. Although Meade does provide background and does give notes as to what became of them in later years, her story begins with 1920 and stops with 1930; there is little context. That said, the portraits involved are somewhat superficial; all four of these women are worthy of stand-alone biographies, and indeed all but Ferber have received major, widely available, and well-received biographies.

That said, however, BOBBED HAIR AND BATHTUB GIN is an enjoyable book that does indeed seem to capture a feel for the 1920s, a decade in which the sky seemed the limit for women, the arts, society, and indeed the entire nation. Although they were hardly the only noted women of the era, Edna Ferber, Zelda Fitzgerald, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Dorothy Parker were in many ways indicative of the decade--and this is a wild and very entertaining romp through their early successes and failures. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid Portrait.......2007-03-02

A wonderful view into the lives of women writers in the 1920's focusing mainly on Edna Ferber, Zelda Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker and Edna St. Vincent Millay. The writing is wonderful, easy to follow, and it almost reads like a novel itself. A great introduction to the biographies of these ladies, Meade doesn't weight the account down with esoteric references to peripheral literary characters. Her focus is sharp and vivid, and I liked that she organized events chronologically, breaking up the chapters by year. She paints these women so multi-dimensionally that I found myself missing them, like characters in a great novel, once I had finished the book.

4 out of 5 stars Flappers Gone Wild.......2007-01-12

A breezy, fast read which skims the surface of Prohibition Days. If you enjoy learning about that crazy time before Wall Street "laid an egg" you will like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin.......2006-11-09

Extremely well written, as is all Meade's stuff, and you'll walk away considerably wider of eye over these lives of recently enfranchised famous flappers learning how to deal with their new status as full members of society. Some of them did not deal well.

Meade also wrote a great bio of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

5 out of 5 stars Utterly fabulous fresco of a fascinating era.......2005-11-16

I loved this book. I don't usually like biographies (they're all the same--someone is born, becomes famous, dies, etc) but this group bio of Edna Ferber, Zelda Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, and Edna St. Vincent Millay totally captured my imagination. It's organized by year, and the storytelling jumps from woman to woman in a way that creates much suspense and anticipation. Meade makes each woman seem so three-dimensional, they don't just leap off the page--I could swear I even smelled Dotty Parker's Chypre perfume and taste Zelda's gin blossoms and highballs. This book would make a great gift for any one who loves biography, the Roaring 20s, or any of the writers in question. The large number of cameo appearances by other writers, bohemians, and Round Tablers give the book a wider appeal. As a recovering English major, I feel strongly that anyone who lists "The Great Gatsby" or "The Sun Also Rises" as his favorite book should get a copy as well, if only for medicinal purposes!

5 out of 5 stars Coley Running Wild Vol. 1.......2001-09-21

Enjoyed the book. I know John Blackbun personally and have encouraged him to write more. Great drawings and great sexual situations.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, Controversial, and SEXY as HELL!!!.......2001-08-03

...P>This book collects 2 miniseries, RETURN... and its sequel IDOL OF FLESH. Each contains adventure, mystery, romance, supernatural elements, violence, and sex(something for everyone!). At times I find the violence disturbing, but the other elements more than balance things out. Blackburn's work, and his young hero, "Voodoo Love God" Coley Cochran, are absolutely compelling. A walking contradiction in terms who affects-- in one way or another-- EVERYONE whose path he crosses.

Some may find the heavy expository dialogue at the beginning confusing; the truth is, there are 3 complete books that precede this one, which have only seen limited printing so far. I hope this oversight is corrected one day!

Eros' "Graphic Novel" reprints only bug me for the numbering on the covers, which like Marvel's "Masterworks" in the late 80's, try to inspire readers to buy ALL of them, at the expense of better package design. Oh well. At least each Coley volume has its own numbering.

4 out of 5 stars Another Sexual Romp.......2000-04-05

Well Coley is at it again, neither man nor woman are safe from his voodoo sex magic. Coley takes us on an erotic rampage throught some sterotypical backwater mindframes. Its Deliverance with a strange and perverted twist. Coley is to many the perfect man and the perfect lover to all. Id love to meet the person the author modeled him from.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem; shiny, smooth, hiding smoky depths and possessed of a undeniable gravity of presence........2005-08-01

Some short novels beg to be fondled long after being read. This volume is just such a lush curio.

I also find this to be Ballard's most readable, or should I say stylistically restrained, work.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Ballard.......2004-04-18

This short, clinical, unflinching novella about the violent end of a gated community is a perfect introduction to the priceless talents of J. G. Ballard. Adopting the persona of a forensic psychiatrist investigating the mass murder of the occupants of a London residential estate, Ballard explores the dangers inherent in even the most privileged manifestations of social control - the fabricated society is an attempt to lock danger out, but its regime of repression is more likely to lock danger in. You'll solve the mystery of what happened in Pangbourne Village within the first ten pages, but that isn't the point. It's not whodunit that matters, but why. Ballard's epigrammatic summary, when it comes, is slightly trite and hardly does justice to what's come before it: a chilling work of distilled intensity. It isn't the best exploration of Ballard's searing sociological vision, but it's a delicious appetizer. Readers who enjoy this will probably find "High Rise" to their taste, too.

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the bad critics - this book rules.......2003-02-07

The only bad thing i can say about this book is that it is very obvious what the plot-twist is going to be - so obvious that it isn't even a real surprise, but this book is still a very good read for people who like shocking but good litterature.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing Great.......2002-10-05

Quick. If you want a quick read for a rainy afternoon, this is it. Don't expect much. There are no surprises, there is little to look forward too. I've read much better shorts in Harper's and Atlantic Monthly. Anyone who thinks this book is "shocking" and "chilling" really hasn't read much. How this even got published _as a book_ surprises me still.

Nonetheless, if it's a rainy day and there's nothing else to read.....

1 out of 5 stars nothing wild about it..........2002-09-17

this was the most boring book i have read in quite some time. i read it in a total of about three hours, constantly looking for some sort of twist or something other than the obvious. although presented as a mystery, crime-solving novel, you know exactly what's going to happen from reading the back cover. this book certainly shouldn't be compared to chuck palahniuk's amazing and thoughtful work. a complete dissapointment.

5 out of 5 stars HOTTER than ever-- sex, sex and MORE sex!!!.......2001-06-09

Following a comparitively low-key personal drama (HARD THROB), and the wildest globe-hopping supernatural adventure yet (DAGGER OF BLOOD) John Blackburn's bisexual "superman" Coley Cochran returns in an epic 168-page story-- a true "graphic novel" (in more ways than one). Coley returns HOME-- and readers get to meet the family he left behind. As usual, the complexities and interpersonal relations (so to speak) affect everyone in town, as long-time deep-rooted secrets, emotions & feelings of guilt all explode to the surface. Along the way, Blackburn finds the time to depict MORE sex in MORE varieties than in all his previous Coley books put together!

Told at a leisurely pace, with several full-page illustrations that show off how accomplished his art has become, DESTINY COAST is a story that could easily be adapted into a feature film....

3 out of 5 stars Have to disagree on the 5 star ratings.......2004-12-30

As a runner of 15+ marathons, a couple ultras and being an avid trail runner, I really wanted to love this book. Annerino is a compelling character, with great courage and anyone who has regularly run long distance on trail can see, a man who must have incredible commitment. The book however comes up short of where it could have. After the first couple of run descriptions, the rest merely become a repeat of lack of water, tough conditions, danger, exhaustion and route finding problems. Annerino frequently references that his motivation in running these routes is to gain information on how preceding Indian generations would have used them for trade, however with the exception of a small amount of info, that aspect is largely not covered in the book. It is a shame, as dedicating more print space to that objective would greatly enlivened the book. Overall, a good read and still recommended, but I can't go 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A runner's touchstone.......2002-08-29

I first read "Running Wild" several years ago while recovering from a running injury and it not only gave me the confidence to come back from the injury but also became my running companion. I have since re-read it many times especially before an important race or when the reasons for training get blurry. For a runner it is a spiritual connection to the joy and mystery that running can be as well as historic proof of the origins of American running. John Annerino is an incredible man whose courage and love of the wilderness together with his deep spiritual committment to the land, it's history and it's people make "Running Wild" a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Blackburn's Best.......2006-04-18

As always John blackburn has given us more erotic episodes in the life of Coley. The story line may not be Hemingway, but combined with John's art it is great. John was my uncle and I keep his book handy to read when I need a little erotica or just want to see some of his work.

5 out of 5 stars A Dark Odyssey into Violence, Corruption, and SEX!!!.......2001-06-09

Eros' "Graphic Novel" reprints of John Blackburn's COLEY books are a big help to readers who no longer have to worry about trying to follow the complex life of his voodoo-endowed bisexual boy-hero in case they've missed a story here and there (as I did when they first came out). "Book Two: Caged Heat" collects a pair of connected miniseries, "WEB OF EVIL" and "THE DEATHSNAKE" (5 issues in all). The first deals with prejudice in a small town, while the second tackles prison corruption. There's less supernatural elements here than usual (if you don't count voodoo love-drugs and an apparent return from the grave!) but the intrigues and complex character interactions more than make up for it, and present a scenario that might remind one of an x-rated version of DARK SHADOWS.

Blackburn's rather art-deco art style is unlike anything in modern comics, and in fact the only comic-book artist his work reminds me of is Harry G. Peters, the original illustrator of WONDER WOMAN-- whose earliest adventures have been considered "kinky", but never THIS much! Blackburn's style has evolved from story to story, and it's almost surprising how much he seems to have matured as an illustrator when you compare his earliest stories to the later ones.

Both stories here contain some of the most shocking violence in the series (and that's really saying something), but WEB OF EVIL also features one of THE hottest sex scenes as well, in its 2nd issue when Coley & his friends decide to put on a public "exhibition". A surprise for me was one of the hottest pages in the book was actually missing from the original printing! Hallelujah for "remastered" editions! Not for the faint of heart-- and NOT to be forgotten by anyone who reads it!

      Book Description

      BASEBALL FEVER!

      It's not so bad living a dog's life. Unless you're a cat.

Most times, hanging out with Rotten Willy (the huge dog on the cover) was cool. We played chase, talked, and chowed down on spaghetti and meatballs at Luigi's restaurant. Even though he was a dog (and sometimes called me Upchuck instead of Chuck), I could handle it. He was my best friend.

Then this baseball stuff started and Willy went bonkers. I never saw him act so crazy. On top of that, these two new cats moved into our neighborhood. Trouble was, tough-guy Roscoe and his cute fuzzy sister, Rikki, did not like dogs.

Dogs belong with dogs and cats belong with cats, they said.

I was showing them the sights when I suddenly spied the dogcatcher, just waiting to trap Willy as he raced across the field with a baseball in his mouth. But Roscoe and Rikki would never understand if they found out my best friend was a dog. How could I save Willy before it was too late? What's a cat to do when he has to choose between old friends and new -- and there's no time to lose...

4 out of 5 stars Rotton Willy and Upchuck Running Wild.......2004-05-26

This is a good book if you in middle school and up. At the end of the book it'll leave you guessing what will happen next or will there be another book in the future to tell you what will happen.
The book tries to teach you a lesson in life, that is why I said middle school and up, the lesson is about friendship and could change your friendship with a close friend forever.
Willy also known as rotten Willy is a dog who loves baseball and happens to be friends with Chuck also know as Upchuck a cat who needed a friend cause all the other cats in the neiborhood moved away or got hit by a car.
Somehow chuck gets hurt all the time and gets knocked out by playen hide-and-seek and hits his head or by some other odd reason, And Willy brings chuck's body to his water bowl and wakes chuck up by splashing him with water.
Then out of nowhere a couple of cats move next door and scare chuck in his own yard, they meet for the first time and from there they become friends. But chuck finds out how they feel about dogs and cats who like dogs, but know chuck has to choose who he wants to be friends with, chuck talks to Willy about the deal and Willy wants chuck to be friends with both the cats and Willy. (Read the book to find out more)
One day the phone rings and it is chucks human friend Katie talking to her parents about coming home from collage and bringing her fiancée and there coming home during the weekend and she shows up with a surprise.
I'll leave it up to you to find out what happens ...
