I'm not sure of the objective here. Swami seems to be in awe of Ma's influence over him. There is no enlighting reading, just his personal story.

Bliss Now is a beautifully rendered, intimate tale of one of the great saints of our age. Swami Ramananda's account of his salvation within the forest of Vrindaban has flushed me with tears more than once. And anything that brings me closer to Sri Sri Ma is worth the rewards of a lifetime. Everyone must read this Joyful account.

Great book from a great man/Swami! I would highly recommend anything by this man and Swami.

His latest CD, Wings of a Dawn is amazing. The CD he wrote in memory of his friend the Indian female astronaut who died in the Shuttle accident. This song he sang at the service.

If you are able to see Swamiji perform anywhere, go you'll love him. Swami Ramananda spent much of his life with Anandamayi Ma. To be near Swami Ramananda is to be near Ma. Ma is a true Saint!

5 out of 5 stars 10 stars and one of my top favorite books............2006-11-29

This has become one of my top favorite 5 books because of the wisdom the author shares. Everything from simply living spaces, simple food, the outdoors, being content with less and more observant about the world around us. Call it Scandinavian zen or simply wise living.

The author hits the nail on the head when she shares how our choices can make our lives better and that these choices often have to do with being still and observant and not allowing big business or hurried people to sway us from taking the path less traveled.

Its a book that I read and then set down, then pick up and read some more, and set down. I savor the lessons I have learned from the book and have recommended it to simple living group friends who like myself try and live a self sufficient lifestyle void of so many of the 'must haves' that American society pushes.

Living here in the Sierras I also appreciated the authors wonderful stories about what the outdoors offers. Be it walking for fitness, or enjoying the fresh fish and vegetables it offers.

So much to be learned from the author and cannot recommend the book highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars She has some good points.......2006-10-03

The suggestions in this book are not expensive. It is always good to get back to the basics. This book has sent me back out doors to enjoy my own little slice of nature. I don't think she is suggesting others to recreate her experiences but to consider your own. This book is a very good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2005-07-22

I thought the book was entertaining, enlightening, comprehensive, and useful. It made me dream of my very own 'away from everything' cabin in the woods living with nature. The references were especially useful and I am already using some of the products mentioned in that section. A very good book for anyone who cares about health and keeping our planet as it should be.

5 out of 5 stars I am definitely recommending this book to my friends!.......2005-06-02

For anyone who is interested in travel and culture, or for anyone who wants to improve his or her life to achieve a better lifestyle, this book is excellent. I myself fit into both categories, so I am very happy with it. I love this book with its very personal voice and several simple, practical ideas on how to enrich my life, (such as through recipes and tips) based on Scandinavian traditions. Also, it is a great read! I am definitely recommending it to my friends and relatives.

5 out of 5 stars I feel like I've been to the spa.......2005-05-27

I took a journey to Sweden from my deck in CT! Most impressively, the author is able to take me through her journey in discovering her inner voice through discovering the Scandinavian outdoors and all it has to offer. This story really made me look at my own patch of green to realize that I can find my own island right here at home. I came away from her story refreshed, informed and well travelled!

Book Description

As one of the largest and most successful yoga-based retreat and education centers in the world, Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Lenox, Massachusetts, attracts many of the leading teachers of yoga and Buddhist meditation to its annual retreat, East meets East: Yoga & Buddhism. In Will Yoga & Meditation Really Change My Life? Stephen Cope brings to the printed page the fascinating dialogue that he has fostered in these retreats.

Cope asks participating teachers to share their ?Tales from the Path,? stories of how the long-term practice of these ancient traditions has changed their lives. The result is an inspirational volume featuring 26 distinct voices telling their stories ? how they became interested in these traditions, the teachers who inspired them, and how the practice of yoga and meditation has shaped their lives and perspectives.

The contributors, many of whom are authors of well-known books on these topics, speak of their experiences as real people living in our complex world, complete with spouses, children, aging parents, financial demands, illnesses, injuries, and all of the ordinary aggravations of everyday life. Many of these teachers have studied and explored the practice of yoga or meditation over the course of 30 years and have been pivotal in creating retreat centers, styles of yoga, and teaching techniques that have contributed to the widespread popularity of these practices in mainstream culture.

The stories of these teachers ask the questions, ?What is possible for me, in my life, right now? How can my practice of yoga and meditation help me lead a more satisfying life?? These are questions on which every spiritual seeker and practitioner of yoga and meditation inevitably must reflect.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2006-01-21

UPDATED REVIEW - I loved this book. It is just stories about yoga instructors and meditation instructors. I say 'just' but many of the stories are very inspirational and motivational.

Many of the people included here are not the most popular teachers that one always hears about and reads about. There was an essay included about Ester Myers. She was a breast cancer survivor and taught specialized yoga to breast cancer survivors. I had ordered a video from here shortly before her death several years ago. I was glad to see that she was included because she is not what would be considered mainstream yoga.

The essays are wonderful. Full of the passion, angst, and change that goes into the moulding of all of us. Steven Cope did a wonderful job with this as he says in the introduction, "Each of the teachers and practitioners represented here had to struggle with practice in the context of husbands, wives, children, aging parents, financial demands, illness and injury, grief, depressions, and neuroses of every imaginable kind." Having already lived through most of these things and knowing that we all exist on different levels simultaneously I also realize that a practice can also be forged without these things.

This is a wonderful book to place many things in perspective and be inspired with the achievements of others. I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in meditation or yoga or someone who would just like to read some inspirational stories about people to give some oomph to your intent for the new year.

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection of essays by well-known figures in the world of yoga, meditation, and Buddhism.......2006-01-17

The editor of this book, Stephen Cope--himself a well-known yoga teacher and practitioner of meditation--asked 25 distinguished instructors in the fields of yoga, meditation, and Buddhism how yoga and meditation had changed their lives. The result is this collection of short (averaging about 12-16 pages) essays and interviews which provide a wealth of insights and reflections. For many, the theme seemed to be acceptance--of themselves, of their lack of control, of their inability to change, etc. What was most apparent, however, was that these ancient practices have clearly brought much peace and joy to those who follow them. As a casual practitioner of yoga, I found these stories to be interesting and engaging; someone who also practices meditation and Buddhism is likely to derive even more value from this collection than I did.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful And Inspiring Collection Of Spiritual Insights.......2004-08-17

I really enjoy books like this, where you get to hear personal reflections from seekers deeply on their path.

I think it's helpful to be able to see how others have been affected by their practice and how they integrate it into their lives.

I am a practicing "Suburban Yogi" who has been on a spiritual path for as long as I can remember, but being a person who is very much a householder with a family, job, mortgage and other responsibilities it can be very difficult to stay grounded on the path. I don't live in solitude in a cave in the himalayas but in Suburban Tennessee (originally from Suburban New York) so I'm very much in the "real world".

I found this book is very helpful because the chapters which feature various spiritual seekers are short enough to be able to read in a short sitting and yet deep enough to help give me inspiration in my own life.

I feel that those folks who are featured in the book really opened themselves up honestly and shared from their hearts their own struggles and growth as they have lived and continue to live their practice the best that they can.

If you like this sort of book then I think you'll love this one by Stephen Cope.

Another book of Interviews that I would also recommend is "Yogi Bare" by Philip Self which contains interviews with many well known Yoga Teachers in the west.

Still other books that are different in format but are still wonderful books that deal with living your yoga and not just the asana/pranayama part (but still related to those things as well) , are: "Meditations from the Mat" by Rolf Gates."Yoga and the Quest for the True Self" by Stephen Cope (the author of the above book), "Yoga and The Path of The Urban Mystic" by Darren John Main (see also his "Spritual Journeys Along The Yellow Brick Road"), "Bringing Yoga To Life" by Donna Farhi, "The Tree Of Yoga" by BKS Iyengar to name other books that I found excellent.

Namaste

5 out of 5 stars Itýs already OK.......2003-12-19

There is incredible value in hearing other people's stories. I find it easy to worry if I'm good enough. And sometimes I see where other people are and know it isn't what I want.

Besides the value in other's stories, I just find them interesting! These are stories from names I recognize as stars in the yoga and Buddhist world. It's good to see them as human. I get a feeling I know them better, which changes my relationship to them when I see them walking around at a Yoga Journal conference or catch their name in print.

The question the book poses is "Will yoga and meditation really change my life?" In my own life, I've already answered this question (it will), but what this book does is help me not worry so much about needing to think my life needs changing.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly Good Collection of Personal Essays and Interviews.......2003-11-27

To answer the question the title poses: yes, yoga and/or meditation will change your life, but maybe not in the ways you hope or expect.

This is a fairly good collection. Each person's stories is only a few pages long, so reading a story a night in bed is a nice way to relax. This book is probably best for neophytes with an interest in and general knowledge of yoga, meditation, or Buddhism who want to know about people with the same interests. There are a few people who made me roll my eyes and think, "this is why people think yoga is weird," but most of the people seem like real, down to earth people who know what it means to live in the real world and make thoughtful choices about how they're going to live. The good stories reminded you that life after yoga isn't perfect, you won't magically become infalliable, holy, strong, wise, or immune to disease. Your feelings won't disappear, things in your life can still hurt you and you will still be a human being. Don't expect answers from this book: this is light reading at its best (like I said, bedside reading), but it might provoke a few questions if you read thoughtfully. Do read this if you're thinking of going deeper into your study of yoga, if you wonder if yoga is a yuppie fad that you've mistakenly bought into, or if you don't yet feel a sense of community with those who you practice with. Note: this book does not offer any advice about yoga postures or how to meditate.

There were one or two stories that made me sad because it seems like yoga is segregated between races. How come people of color get their own teachers and retreats? Doesn't yoga come from the word yoke? If yoga can't unify people here in the US, nothing in the world will ever be able to. I greive that we can't all practice together as a unified community, honoring differences while celebrating what we share as human beings. I hope this changes within my lifetime and I hope I make a difference in bringing people together.

A paean to the Indian tradition of truth-seeking, India My Love tells the stories of the great masters of the magical subcontinent. Osho (formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) introduces us to his spiritual heroes--Muslim fakirs, Hindu yogis, Jaina ascetics, and Buddhist monks--men and women who transcend the boundaries of convention to attain a bliss that is beyond happiness. And since Osho is an entertaining speaker, these transcripts of his talks do more than relate ancient tales, they narrate competitions, journeys, and the exploits of kings, prostitutes, and musicians. Taking the theme of meditation and the goal of liberation, the stories are woven together with snippets about the mystical energy of India and interspersed with beautiful photos of temples, statues, and religious devotees. Carefully edited, this Osho is thoroughly mainstream and India My Love eminently palatable. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

India is not just a geography or history. It is not only a nation, a country, a mere piece of land. It is something more: it is a metaphor, poetry, something invisible but very tangible. It is vibrating with certain energy fields that no other country can claim. For almost ten thousand years, thousands of people have reached to the ultimate explosion of consciousness. Their vibration is still alive, their impact is in the very air; you just need a certain perceptivity, a certain capacity to receive the invisible that surrounds this strange land.It is strange because it has renounced everything for a single search, the search for the truth. In these pages, we are treated to a spellbinding vision of what Osho calls "the real India," the India that has given birth to enlightened mystics and master musicians, to the inspired poetry of the Upanishads and the breathtaking architecture of the Taj Mahal. We travel through the landscape of India's golden past with Alexander the Great and meet the strange people he met along the way. We are given a front-row seat in the proceedings of the legendary court of the Moghul Emperor Akbar, and an insider's view of the assemblies of Gautama the Buddha and his disciples. In the process, we discover just what it is about India that has made it a magnet for seekers for centuries, and the importance of India's unique contribution to our human search for truth.

5 out of 5 stars India's connection with spirituality........2007-09-27

This book is a great work of art, it shows the significance of India's contribution to the world of spirituality; spirituality at its pinnacle, not magic or the occult arts. Enlightenment, the greatest contribution of India to the world. It's a good book for any reader from any part of the world to read, easy reading and great illustrations.
Something not to miss out on.

4 out of 5 stars Truly Indian Vision.......2004-08-14

India My Love is one book that shine out in my Osho collection. The very fact is that I been sometimes gifting this book to people who are fond of Osho Discourses. This book is a gem of Osho Insight and truly Indian vision because no other spiritual leader has so vividly introduced the Real India and the spiritual beliefs. Osho speaks of yogis, fakirs, buddhist monks, jain gurus and all about ancient India. This book is not only about stories of saints and osho transcript of talks but also has great illustrated pics alongwith snippets about mystical India. The Krishna tales and Atista are topics that create a lot of interest to read and the liberation goal of osho is defined as one read through these pages. Osho unfolds cultural and spiritual aspects of the golden past of India. A good & Must Read for an Osho Fan. Great Pick.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book - Osho's brilliance is beyond ordinary words.......2004-06-08

"The real India is a quest of the inner most soul of man - not the geography, nor the political history, but the inner journey. The journey of meditation is the real India. Mahavir represents it. Buddha represents it. Krishna, Christ and Nanak - they represent the real India. And I have the heritage of all of them and much more," declares Osho.

5 out of 5 stars A Pilgrimage to Real India with Osho.......2004-03-12

The very word "India" sounds differently to different people. Most of us may get an immediate view of images like one of these: a herd of skinny cows scattered all over a barren, over-gazed field; people lined-up to a remote water tap to fetch drinking water; trains and buses over crowded with people on its roof; naked yogis and sadhus in eye-unpleasant figures and shapes; etc, etc.

Osho, in this book, India My Love, takes us to a totally different pilgrimage of India: the India of enlightened mystics and of spiritually awakened people. Osho unfolds the golden past of India by picking one story at a time, and explaining it in light of its spiritual and cultural values. There is no doubt that Osho has been one of the most brilliant educators and storytellers of our time. The West has not fully recognized his teachings and legacy yet.

India My Love, on the one hand, samples the wisdom of Osho, unsurpassable by any, and on the other hand, provides with a glimpse of an India, rare and unknown to many, that has a continuum legacy of 5000 years-old search for the enlightenment during all phases of the Indian history.

5 out of 5 stars A mystic journey.......2002-08-12

If you have been to India, you have to read this book. You'll find the echo to bring you back to India. If you have not been to India, you have to read this book. It will bring you to India, the real India. Everyone has an inner yearning to go to India, at least once in your life time. Don't delay. Start the spiritual journey led by OSHO.

    Book Description

How, when, and where can one meet this Friend of every heart? My guess is that there are as many ways of meeting him as there are human beings in the world. I have heard of people who met him unexpectedly in near death experiences, during illnesses, or at crossroads in their lives. Some of these people saw and heard him, while for others the experience was less direct but no less meaningful. For example, they heard his voice or sensed his presence in the words or deeds of a friend or a stranger. I have also read of people meeting him because they earnestly desired it. Whether we are conscious or not of wanting to meet him, I believe his wish for the encounter is always present, but he never forces himself upon us. I have always felt complete respect from him for my freedom, both inner and outer" (from Friend of My Heart).

To open this book is to open yourself to the possibility of an extraordinary meeting. For this is the story of such a meeting, and it is one that can happen to anyone who wants it. The book begins as each of us must begin--with a declaration of hope, heartfelt longing, expectation. Gathered from more than twenty-five journals over twenty years, the messages in this book invite us to listen in the spirit of simplicity, openness, and faith, and then to be attentive to what stirs within.

First comes the question: how, when and where can one meet this Friend of the heart? The answer comes from the author's experiences and the messages she has received inwardly. Made deaf by illness at the age of six, Claire Blatchford speaks to us about how to listen and how to hear from our own inner and outer lives.

These are primary messages, put into the context of the author's life, that enable us, in the context of our own lives, to enter into a relationship with this Being who is the Friend of every heart. Friend of My Heart leaves us with the profound sense that we can all stand truly as our own selves in the presence of love.

A fully qualified theologian and clever psychologist, he had all the methods of critical examination at his command. This book gives insight into the meeting of the author and Steiner, which was to lead the author to the most crucial experiences of his life and ultimately made him one of the truest and ablest interpreters of Rudolf Steiner's work.

For anyone interested in Rudolf Steiner, there are few more insightful sources than this autobiographical work by Rittelmeyer. Rittelmeyer was a Lutheran minister in Berlin when he encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner. At first he was put off, but after much effort he became convinced of the importance of Steiner's work. This book was written after Steiner's death, but describes several important discussions he and Rittelmeyer had.

This book is so rare. It's rare you can find books that are real and people are not goody goodies. But not juvenile deliquents. Trinty speaks a life where things aren't ideal. But she can make the best of it. She used to live isn't the hood but now she has to go to some smalltown countryplace. Trinity tries her best to track down her mother and gets to know herself while doing it.

4 out of 5 stars Trinity B Jones rocks Podunk High.......2004-10-26

Tough, smart Trinity B. Jones bounced between foster homes and St. Helen's Home for Girls until she landed in Linden Falls. Her foster mother Susan and her daughter Kelly are nice enough but life as a country girl in "Podunk High" is a total bore. Luckily Fred, her latest in a string of case workers, gives her a web address for ALTLIVES.com, a mysterious computer game that allows her to peer into the lives of the people in her past, including her real mom. She discovers her mom is married to a wealthy man in nearby Pittsburgh and she becomes obsessed with finding a way to get back into her life.

When she finds out Josh Johnson is sure to be elected King of the Fall Dance, Trinity devises a scheme to get him to ask her to the dance. But she knows it'll take more than becoming Fall Queen to get her social climbing mother's attention. Undaunted, Trinity works out another plan. Since Linden High lacks a planning committee or a theme for the dance, she and Kelly take over and convince everyone to make it a charity event to benefit St. Helen's. Trinity uses Kelly's name to trick her mom into donating $2,000 to their school's charity and an invitation to be the star of the show. As plans often do, this one grows larger in its dimension until it blows up in her face. Trinity is forced to decide between the real world and ALTLIVES.

Trinity's ability to spy on her real mom through the Internet adds a satisfying element of fantasy to the heart wrenching reality of her life. It seems perfectly fair and reasonable that a foster child should have the right to peer into the life of the parent who abandoned her and make her own judgments. While "My Alternate Life" is an inside look at the life of a foster teen, McClain skillfully weaves the common issues of self-esteem and self defense for young women into the plot. Teen readers will be drawn to Trinity's rough edges and identify with her independent spirit as she makes the biggest decision of her life.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing New Novel for Teens.......2004-09-04

Fifteen-year-old urban tough girl, Trinity B. Jones, was perfectly happy with her life. Sure, she didn't have her birth Mother at home with her, and her foster parents didn't really care about her, but she was able to do what she wanted, and her boyfriend, Nate, loved her. But suddenly, her foster parents got sick of teenagers, and threw them all out, leaving Trinity with no home. Now, Trinity is forced to move to the suburbs with a family court lawyer named Susan, who's looking to do a good deed, and her 15-year-old daughter, Kelly, who's miss popularity, and a total phony. But when Trinity places the computer game that her social worker, Fred, gives her, she's suddenly able to experience her alternate life. The life that she would have had with her birth Mother, had she decided to keep her, instead of throw her away like an old t-shirt. Everything Trinity is experiencing is a dream come true. Now if only she could escape this life, and live forever in her alternate life.

Lee McClain has created a diamond among cubic zirconia, with MY ALTERNATE LIFE, as it is one of the only teen books on the market about a foster child. Trinity is a fast-talking teenager, filled with the usual angst that overtakes most kids over the age of thirteen, who knows exactly where she wants to go in life, and that's back to urbania. Her quick wit, and hilarious remarks will keep readers flipping the pages, while the sadness that overtakes her at times over the abandonment by her Mother, will have readers sympathizing with her, and hoping that she finds the family life that she so rightfully deserves. Filled with wonderful characters, both main and supporting, as well as an extremely fresh, and original plot, this is sure to be a winner in the eyes of teenage readers the world over.

      5 out of 5 stars Who doesn't love a good ghost story?.......2007-05-05

From the pages of FATE Magazine, Andrew Honigman has compiled a wonderful collection of true personal accounts of contact with the Hereafter. For the past 50 years, FATE has featured the letters of its readers in a most popular column, My Proof of Survival. Here, readers share their own stories of encounters with spirits of all kinds. In this collection of 145 stories, Andrew Honigman has collected the best of the best.

The book is broken into chapters that reflect the story messages, with topics from Messages - communications from the other side, to Blessings - gifts from the departed. The stories cover every imaginable spirit encounter - apparitions, signs, dreams, spirit heroes, haunted houses, and even animal spirits. Some of the stories are touching and sweet, while others are downright frightening. The publisher of FATE magazine insists that all stories in this selection are true; the policy is to have the authors sign an affidavit that they are. This fact lends credence to the book, offering a form of proof that these things do happen.

Readers will likely find several stories that they will connect with for various reasons; my own personal favorite being a story titled, "A Walk in the Park." With so many stories to choose from, it may be difficult to narrow it down. This is a book that you will pick up again and again and never grow tired of. Who doesn't love a good ghost story? Especially when they are from the files of FATE Magazine.

5 out of 5 stars This book WILL enhance your perspective on life and children.......1998-02-09

Gives definite tools in which to clarify and establish one's own ideals and ways to apply them to our everyday living. Offers insights and gentle advice on child-rearing. Asks us to look into ourselves; to define what we want, and how we want to live our life, and what is important. This alone is bound to have a positive effect on raising our children. I think this book is compatible with any religion and gently accepts and respects one's own individuality, yet is able to wisely advise and provide ways to cope and look at things in a new perspective. Highly recommended...for men and women alike!

5 out of 5 stars Great, practical help for parents.......1997-09-21

This book is very practical. I found the philosophy agreeable to mine, but also flexible to different values and personal experiences. For example it has many "tools" for examining your own experiences which lead to practical suggestions about how to change your methods. It helps you understand you plans for your parenting and to look at how you are and are not meeting your own expectations. It is applicable to ages from tiny infants to teenagers (a rare quality in a parenting book). I hope you try this book, I think you will find it helpful for yourself as well as your children and family.
