Book Description

"Do you know why I write so much? Because as long as you read, we are together."

-- Raizel Garncarz (Sala's sister),

April 24, 1941

Few family secrets have the power both to transform lives and to fill in crucial gaps in world history. But then, few families have a mother and a daughter quite like Sala and Ann Kirschner. For nearly fifty years, Sala kept a secret: She had survived five years as a slave in seven different Nazi work camps. Living in America after the war, she kept from her children any hint of her epic, inhuman odyssey. She held on to more than 350 letters, photographs, and a diary without ever mentioning them. Only in 1991, on the eve of heart surgery, did she suddenly present them to Ann and offer to answer any questions her daughter wished to ask. It was a life-changing moment for her scholar, writer, and entrepreneur daughter.

We know surprisingly little about the vast network of Nazi labor camps, where imprisoned Jews built railroads and highways, churned out munitions and materiel, and otherwise supported the limitless needs of the Nazi war machine. This book gives us an insider's account: Conditions were brutal. Death rates were high. As the war dragged on and the Nazis retreated, inmates were force-marched across hundreds of miles, or packed into cattle cars for grim journeys from one camp to another. When Sala first reported to a camp in Geppersdorf, Poland, at the age of sixteen, she thought it would be for six weeks. Five years later, she was still at a labor camp and only she and two of her sisters remained alive of an extended family of fifty. In the first years of the conflict, Sala was aided by her close friend Ala Gertner, who would later lead an uprising at Auschwitz and be executed just weeks before the liberation of that camp. Sala was also helped by other key friends. Yet above all, she survived thanks to the slender threads of support expressed in the letters of her friends and family. She kept them at great personal risk, and it is astonishing that she was able to receive as many as she did. With their heartwrenching expressions of longing, love, and hope, they offer a testament to the human spirit, an indomitable impulse even in the face of monstrosity.

Sala's Gift is a rare book, a gift from Ann to her mother, and a great gift from both women to the world.

I was so moved by this book I will include share my heartfelt comments to the author.
Just want to THANK YOU for such an amazing book! Your decision to share your mothers personal life with readers who benefit so from your investment of labor and emotion is generous and to be admired! When you were complete it must have looked like E=Mc squared did to Einstein! Simple on the surface with the complexity of the universes author within. My highest regards to you and Sala Kirschner.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT........2007-08-16

I picked this book, figuring it would be an interesting read. It is, hands down, one of the best books I have read regarding the Holocaust. What a wonderful book! Where other books have let me down, this book did not. It is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Story!.......2007-08-03

I read an article in the Ladies Home Journal and wanted to read more about this amazing woman. I bought the book and my mother and I have both just finished reading it. What an unforgettable story - and what a strong and courageous woman is Sala! Thank you, Ann, for bringing this to the rest of the world and for all the incredible extra research you have done to fill in the spaces. It is the story of a life that is much too important to be kept in a box. My husband will read this beautifully and lovingly written book next and I have recommended it to my book club. Thank you! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Moving and Reflective.......2007-07-17

The author's mother is a woman of courage at many levels. In the Nazi work camps it was forbidden to keep letters. Her defiance and courageous evasion of this rule has given us a rich history of life for the ordinary Polish Jew as arrests, deportations and deprivation grinds down the survivors. We are drawn into her family in an intimate and caring way.

The book is beautifully written. It flows through a story that could be disjointed or monotonous in the hands of a lesser writer. There is so much to learn about love and friendship. How a life is saved when a moment of luck and courage intersect. How new "family" is formed from the fractured remnants of old ones. When hope and succor come from surprising places. The ominous shadows that draw over friendships as the precious lifeline of correspondence with cherished ones grows silent one by one. The network of support and care as new friends build each other up. The courage and hope and the path to a new life after the horror.

I am grateful for Mrs. Kirschner's courage now to open such a tightly sealed vault of pain to us. On a return visit in the 90's she leaves the threshold of her old home in Poland and says "I am so much more now than when I left. " So are we, dear readers. Thank you, Mrs. Kirschner, for your gift to us.

Product Description

Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10

John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.

When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.

Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.

This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

5 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26

As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.

Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.

Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18

I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.

5 out of 5 stars Great Men, Great Thoughts, Perfect Title .......2007-08-04

I love this book. It may not have 2000 quotes in it, but I have to agree that these are some of mankind's greatest quotes. I received it as a gift and I find it easy to use and lovely to look at. It has over 100 of mankind's most profound insights in one place which makes them easy to refer to. The book was designed so that there are 7 or 8 quotes on a page with a beautiful color photograph next to each page of quotes that is appropriate to the theme of those quotes. The aesthetic affect is a reminder of the depth of life and livingness - something that often gets lost in our day to day lives. The wisdom relayed reminds me that we as mankind have very similar hopes and desires and dreams for ourselves and our family and friends. It is also very therapeutic to be reminded how GREAT each one of us really is. I recommend reading this little book and bringing some joy to your life. You deserve it.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price..........2007-08-03

I have to say that I disagree with the majority of the previous reviewers, in that this book is really not that useful in my eyes. While it does have a few famous and inspirational quotes, it is definitley not worth paying $15 for. Like other readers have mentioned, the book is 50 pages long, with half of them being illustrations. The other 25 pages contain from 4-5 quotes each, for a total of maybe 100 quotes in the entire book. This is the type of book that you would expect to pay $3.95 for at a bookstore, and definitly not $14.95. My suggestion would be to stay away from this book. You are better off getting quotes off the Internet. Just my opinion...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-06-11

Pick the book up and flip to any page whenever you are in need of an inspirational thought. Great to have in your own library; also makes an excellent gift for a book-lover.

Book Description

Boys are different. Boy, are they different. And so too is the mother-son relationship, whose depth and wonder are captured perfectly in one of the very first pages of MOTHER TO SON: Don’t forget that even as a baby, he will always be looking for your face. It will be this way forever.

Woven out of wisdom, humor, experience, love, charm, and a poetic economy of words, here is one pithy, memorable lesson per page, beginning with the Beginning, and covering toddlerhood, the school years, sports, spirituality and, of course, girls. There are practical matters for first-time mothers of sons: Watch out when you’re changing his diaper. Baby boys shoot straight in the air. The helpful reinforcement of principles: There will be times when the last thing in the world you want to tell him is no. But sometimes you’ll have to. The whimsical yet invaluable suggestion: Have tea with him in the afternoons. Serve cookies. The true voice of experience: He is not a child anymore, but he’s not an adult either. Treating him like either one will lead to disaster. Reminders about the importance of your own values: Treat his father with love and respect. Show your son that being a man is a good thing. And what to do when he’s all grown up and getting ready to leave: Hug him fiercely.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding..............2006-05-11

Words like "marvelous," "remarkable," "wonderful," "astounding," "incredible," don't even begin to describe this great book. It really touched home. A must read for every mother or son.

5 out of 5 stars Quickly Add This to Your Library.......2006-05-11

Having devoured every page of the Harrisons' Mother to Daughter book, I was eager to discover what wisdom lay in their newest volume. I wasn't disappointed! Again, this little gem is filled with wise counsel -- this time for mothers of boys of any age. The authors' economy of words, their humor and insight, is never cliche. I recognized myself and my own sons in its pages and appreciate the opportunity to better prepare for our oldest son's new adventure in college. It's great reading for "taxi-ing" times -- I carry my copy in my car -- and is a wonderful tool for opening dialogue with our sons. Fun to read and most profound, all in one terrific package!

5 out of 5 stars Mother to Son - 2 thumbs up.......2006-03-21

The little boy on the cover of this book is just so darling I had to own it. I'm a parent of 2 boys and I can tell you that the wisdoms that Mr & Mrs Harrison share in this book will really stop and make you think. Just like my 2 boys. Thank you for writing this book, and thank you for the picture of that adorable little boy

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-01-13

I had been looking for a "to do" list for baby planning online and wasn't having any luck. I wanted something that would tell me "by the time you're 3 months along, have these things done." These being my first children (twins), I wasn't sure what I should be doing or when. This book was exactly what I was looking for. Though it isn't written specifically for multiples, it still works for them. The author is actually a mother of twins herself. My twins are almost a year old and I still use the book to write down questions for the pediatrician and gifts the kids receive. Not only was it great for preparing for the babies, it will be a wonderful memento later, as it has spaces for all of your doctor appointments, the birth information, hospital visitors, pediatrician appointments and more.

2 out of 5 stars Some good info but not much of an organizer.......2007-01-08

While I find some of the checklists and suggestions useful, I found it difficult to use as an organizer. I would have liked pockets to hold receipts and appointment cards, a calendar and so on. I found it difficult to locate the pages where I could write in appointment information and if I squeezed in a new appointment, I had to put it on a later page since there are only 3 appts. per page. In the end, I tossed it aside and just moved back to my daytimer. Overall, I'm sorry I spent any money on it.

5 out of 5 stars List makers dream.......2007-01-04

While preparing for baby can be an uncertain and scary time, this book brings some order and organization to the planning process. Keeping track of medical bills, doctor appointments, weight gain, barrowed goods, furniture dimensions and purchases for the little one has been extremely helpful for my peace and sanity. I carry this book wherever I go. I would highly recommend this book to anyone expecting. I have loaned it to friends who recently had babies and they added thier own notes as well. It was exactly what I was looking for!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book to Get Ready for baby.......2006-12-27

I used this book when I was preparing for the birth of our first baby. It had practical advice and helped me to focus on what was REALLY important to have in place before the baby came. Most first time mom's aren't really sure what all is needed or required to make the transition to motherhood smooth and I found this book invaluable! I recommend it to all first time moms and have given it to just about everyone I know that is having a baby for the first time. Its also a great reference for subsequent children just to make sure you remember what you need to have in place. I can't say enough about this book. Every mom-to-be should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Get it, you won't regret it!.......2006-10-09

I got this book as a gift very early in my pregnancy. I was a little overwhelmed at first because this lady has remembered everything and it seems like to much to do before the baby got here. I found that I used as a guide and didn't get too picky about the little details. I recomend this for everyone before their first baby. It helps to remind you of all the things you didn't think of. I now give them as baby shower gifts! Get it, you will not regret it!

Strong is the urge to write one's life story as a keepsake for oneself and one's family. The difficulty is knowing where to start, and then where to go from there. Carl and David Marshall, a grandfather-grandson team, have created a fine and fun do-it-yourself autobiography. The cover of the journal-sized Book of Myself is intended to resemble handmade paper; the inside pages have the yellowed hue of a keepsake found in a musty attic trunk. The book is not especially pretty. But the questions--one per page, divided into early, middle, and late years, and then again into sections concerning family, friends, education, work and responsibilities, and the world--are good enough that it hardly matters. Among the 201 jumping-off points included here are questions concerning childhood toys, crushes, and forbidden exploits; adult embarrassments, betrayals, and achievements; and how one's views change over the years. --Jane Steinberg

After purchasing this book for myself, I bought one for my Mother and Daughter. What a great journal of your life and thoughts!

4 out of 5 stars If you have the time.......2007-07-23

My husband and I bought these to fill out together, but it's not really like that. They are in depth answers that require thought. Perfect for self reflection if you have a lot of time to write. Good thought provoking questions.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for parents.......2006-12-07

I gave this book to my father many years ago, and had completely forgotten about it. He recently passed away and, when going through his things, I found the book. He had completed it. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to have his words and thoughts in writing, many of those words and thoughts quite new to me! My brothers and I will treasure this book forever...once a gift to him, now a gift to us.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a hit with my mother and relatives!.......2006-04-16

For my mother's 60th birthday, she told me she'd like to reflect on her life thus far. I'd seen books of this nature, in which the reader can fill out question to create an easy autobiography. After using reading lots of different reviews on these types of books, The Book of Myself stood out with the best ratings. I bought the book from another bookstore, and from just skimming through the book I loved its questions. Finally, I presented it to my mother at her birthday dinner. She beamed with excitement when I explained the nature of the book, and she repeatedly said it's just what she wanted. After the dinner, she immediately called her sisters and told them about the book. They said they would like one for a christmas present, and eventually have all their siblings fill out the book. In light of other deaths in the family, my elders were seeking ways to preserve their memories. They're looking forward to discussing the questions as a group, and recalling all the chapters of their lives. Also, my mom told her co-worker about the book, who in turn wanted one for herself! "You see," my mother said, "this book you gave me is really taking off."

I love seeing my mother's enthusiasm for the book, and she informs me of her progress in filling it out. She decided to type her answers to the questions, and she's saving her answers on a keepsake CD. My father and aunts will be doing the same, and we anticipate having a memory box full of these books and autobiography CDs! Overall, I'm so blessed to have stumbled upon this book, it seems like it's becoming an integral part of preserving family memories.

Book Description

She brims with curiosity, enthusiasm, often joy. She has an independent spirit to nurture, values to shape. And through every step, it’s her mother—who knows just how she feels—who is her guide. From Melissa Harrison, because only a mother knows, and Harry Harrison, author of the chunky bestsellers Father to Son and Father to Daughter with nearly one million copies in print, comes Mother to Daughter, a pithy book of wisdom and inspiration.

Divided into sections including The Bonding Years, The Awkward Years, Girls and Success, Girls and Spirituality, and (of course!) Girls and Boys, the book offers one succinct lesson per page.

Fun stuff: Have a skipping contest. This is especially good for when you need to get somewhere fast.
Passing down tradition: Share stories of your mother and grandmothers with her. Remember, girls are keepers of the flame.
Focusing on the big picture: Understand that for girls, independence usually starts with hair. Ask yourself, how important is it really if it’s blue?
Setting moral examples: Let her see you give of yourself unselfishly. Not just your money, but your time, your patience, and love.
Nurturing self-sufficiency: Teach her how to change a tire, use an electric drill, mow the lawn. She should never depend on some guy to do it for her.

Finally—Tell her how much joy she’s brought into your life. And when it’s time—Let her go.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.............2005-04-30

The book is pure GENIUS. It makes you cry, laugh and learn at the same time. I think every mother of a daughter should be forced by law to have a copy. It's short enough that you will actually read it cover to cover, and its wisdom peirces though you as if you didn't have a choice but to grow. This is the "best book ever written on mothers and daughters." And it's short enough to read in one sitting. Amazing...

5 out of 5 stars Very good read for people who love children!.......2007-08-23

This book is a very good read. I am a child care provider and I take care of children from all walks of life. I read this book and it brought tears to my eyes in some chapters. Patty anglin really has a way with bonding with people and children. I have a lot of respect for this woman and her husband. Also, I love the fact that this book has pictures in it too. It brings you into her world, and the children are adorable too.
I suggest that you read this book for the sake of the children who want you to hear their story..

5 out of 5 stars What an inspiring story!.......2007-02-26

After reading this book, I am in awe of this woman! She has such love and such grace. So many children crossed her path, and so many were helped by her. It really stretches the concept of how much one person can accomplish.

5 out of 5 stars A true story of hope.......2000-10-01

This is a beautiful, quality book about a woman who doesn't give up! Patty tells of her experiences growing up as a missionary's daughter in Africa, her faith in facing major obstacles in life, and how God has helped her move mountains. Most of the book is dedicated to relating the trials and miracles she and her husband have experienced in adopting children who might otherwise not have had families. She shares some important bonding techniques and ideas that will definitely help other adoptive parents of special needs infants. As a prospective adoptive parent, this book filled my heart with "acres" of hope! I recommend this book to everyone I love.

5 out of 5 stars Patty! What a wonderful expression of God's love!.......2000-07-19

The last time I saw Patty was in l969 in Stockholm, Sweden. Her family and ours had lived on the same mission station in the Congo and were on our way back to the States. I have had no contact with Patty since then. But, even more than 30 years ago, I saw the same Patty that is so beautifully expressed in Acres of Hope. Even at such a young age, she was caring and compassionate - and such a champion for what was right and just. This is a book well worth the read - and so well written. Every parent should read it! Thanks, Patty! You do your Mother proud - and your Lord!

5 out of 5 stars Acres and acres of love - abounding!.......2000-06-16

What an incredibly inspiring book! This is an EXCELLENT book and God Bless the entire Anglin family. I loved reading about each of their 8 adopted special needs children and the love that was poured forth which has made a HUGE difference in each and everyone of these children's lives. I have to ask myself what would have become of these precious children if it were not for the Anglin's? This book PROVES that love conquers all and that love is indeed the answer.

This book is especially poignant to me in that, in my own personal upheavls and challenges, Patty has taught me about having faith and trust in God. Since God is in charge and knows the outcome, one just has to have faith. I think that this book "fell" into my hands for a reason in that it has provided me the answers on how to cope with my personal challenges - it has given me hope.

I am inspired by the challenges that the Anglin's faced at various times in their lives, yet they perservered, they never gave up hope and the love that they all shared TOGETHER pulled them through. I laughed, I cheered and I cried and I could not put this book down. This couple, this family is love in action - pure and simple.

This is a book of fortitude and love and hope. This book will touch your heart in many ways. Again I say, God Bless.
