Book Description

Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Who—or what—could have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness?

Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush-hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters. But her involuntary admission and subsequent attempt to stonewall investigators only deepens the mystery. Where has she been? Why has she waited so long to come forward? Could her abductor truly be a beloved Baltimore cop? There isn't a shred of evidence to support her story, and every lead she gives the police seems to be another dead end—a dying, incoherent man, a razed house, a missing grave, and a family that disintegrated long ago, torn apart not only by the crime but by the fissures the tragedy revealed in what appeared to be the perfect household.

In a story that moves back and forth across the decades, there is only one person who dares to be skeptical of a woman who wants to claim the identity of one Bethany sister without revealing the fate of the other. Will he be able to discover the truth?

3 out of 5 stars Maybe Not Your Best Introduction to Lippman.......2007-10-05

Well, it was mine, after having been encouraged by my wife, who has consistently enjoed all those before it. Afterwards I wasn't quite sure what all the excitement has been about. Frankly, I found this book middling: neither a stunning success nor a total flop. The author has a good ear for dialogue, yet for me the characters remained fairly flat. It's true that the narrative is non-linear, but I wasn't put off by that: the style she's trying to put over (I think) matches the "revenant" plot-pivot. If anything, the circular narration may strike some readers as a bit pretentious for what is, finally, a good evening's read.

3 out of 5 stars Fatal oversight?.......2007-09-24

I've read all of Lippman's books and enjoyed most of them. Her Tess Monaghan series always entertains. "What the Dead Know," however, isn't her strongest novel.

The story suffers from a non-linear narrative. Not only does it jump around in time, but since there are two missing girls and two grieving parents, there are essentially multiple protagonists. Too much mental whiplash forced me to skip to the end for the resolution about halfway through, then continue reading. Yes, it's cheating, but it did help. I understand how Lippman, knowing the whole story when she began to write it, wouldn't be able to see the degree of confusion her structure would cause. This becomes clear because re-reading the book is a whole different experience than the first read-through. One can appreciate the craftsmanship without being distracted by the disjointed timeline.

However, for me there's an even bigger problem. Without revealing too much of the plot, I'll just ask: In 1975, didn't police reports of missing children include in their descriptions identifying physical characteristics, such as moles, birthmarks, and obvious scars? Today I'm sure a parent would be asked for such details, to help identify a child (dead or alive). If police reports included this information in 1975, the case should have been solved sooner. Those of you who have read the book will know what I'm talking about. Do you agree?

I enjoy Lippman's work and I'll continue to read anything she gives us. However, this particular volume probably won't make my top-five list of her work. Not to worry, there are plenty of others. Check them out.

2 out of 5 stars in the loop.......2007-09-24

This was the first of Lippman's novels I've read. And I was so flummoxed by the going round and around construct...and when the police said they'd let someone in the loop...I desperately wanted to get out of the loop....I felt like a hampster in a wheel...around and around....going nowhere....I simply didn't enjoy it; the way it was constructed it didn't pack a punch!
The mystery wasn't interesting to me; nor were the characters, with the possible exception of Miriam...who wasn't memorable but at least passable..
It occurs to me..post women's lib...now that women have to make a living...they're pumping out unspiring drivel like their male counterparts....Equal opportunity rum amok I suppose..

5 out of 5 stars A moving literary mystery.......2007-09-23

I've never read any of Laura Lippman's books, so I didn't know her if her style was the usual crime and thriller fast-paced writing or the literary sort, sentences pregnant with suggestion and nuance. I'm happy to say that it's very literary: wonderful and evocative prose, carefully structured and flowing like a dream. The case involves the disappearance of two girls, two sisters taken during an outing at the mall. Years later, one of them reappears and throws the case wide open again. But she doesn't quite seem to be who she says she is (is anyone ever?). Lippman builds up characters like a sculptor, taking great pains to evince personality traits, histories, and deep, simmering emotions. Each character, not just the sisters, was interesting to me and there seemed a wealth of stories that could be told about each of them.

While reading, there were moments when I felt I was aloft and enjoying an excellent view of the community, gently and generously invited by the author to remain there watching, occasionally descending and moving close to the characters until the tempests of fear or rage within them became palpable. Despite what "knowingness" I thought I felt, my position was never higher than the level of the author herself, who knew everything, yet her voice was never smug. I was happy to observe and learn and guess.

And I managed to guess the identity of the mystery person because of a few small details. I'm glad I was right because I never get anything right when I guess the end of crime or mystery novels. Still, the circumstances behind the mystery were impossible to guess. But when all was revealed, it made perfect sense. Heartbreaking sense. I've never been so affected by the end of a book, especially a crime one.

Parts of the book reminded me of Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones," which focuses heavily on the family breaking down after the disappearance of a young woman. In "What the dead know," two girls are taken (who takes two? many characters ask), and the parents are changed forever. Change is both internal and external. Time alters the town as well, and these altered landscapes reminded me how malleable our own appearances are, whether by our own hand or those of time and circumstance.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Psychological Drama from Lippman.......2007-09-22

I read a lot of crime fiction, and I think Laura Lippman is really one of the best writers in the field. WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is a nice example of her talents.

The plot of WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is relatively straightforward. In 1975, two young sisters mysteriously disappeared during a trip to the local mall in Baltimore. Now, over thirty years later, a woman appears claiming to be one of the missing girls. The mystery of the novel is whether this woman is telling the truth.

WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is more of a psychological drama than a fast-paced thriller. There are a fair number of characters in this novel, and Lippman takes a lot of time exploring the psyche of each individual person. This is the type of novel with a lot of interior monologues, where the reader follows the character's thoughts and observations about life. As a result, most of the characters in this novel possess a great deal of depth and complexity.

The major flaw of WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is the lack of a genuinely likable protagonist. Nearly all the characters in this book are deeply flawed and some are downright annoying. While this is certainly realistic in many ways, it does make this novel tough to read in spots, since there is no specific person to root for.

Overall, however, I enjoyed this book a great deal, but not as much as EVERY SECRET THING, an earlier effort. Still, I think Lippman is an enormously talented crime writer, and I look forward to her future novels.

Once again, Dr. Laura Schlessinger strikes an important nerve in our culture. Jumping off her million–copy bestseller The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, which received an incredible response from readers worldwide, in THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF MARRIAGE, Dr. Laura exposes the sensitive and loving truth that it is necessary to appreciate the the polarity between masculine and feminine in order to produce and sustain a wonderfully satisfying marriage. Both husbands and wives have power in their relationships, and each needs to realize this in order to ensure for themselves the personal satisfaction they yearn for. Using real–life examples from her call–in radio show, and giving us real–life solutions, Dr. Laura focuses on the typical mistakes made by men and women in their relationships, and shows us how marriages can come back from the brink of disaster and divorce.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars VERY condescending - poorly written.......2007-10-08

I don't know who edited this book but they did a poor job. While reading it, I kept thinking that my 7th Grade English teacher would NOT approve of that sentence!

It doesn't help any that Dr. Laura is a bully and can be a b**** on the radio. I just find no value in brow-beating people on national radio just to make yourself look intelligent or knowledgeable.

Personally, I don't think Dr. Laura has any moral authority to speak on this subject and she obviously does not have the writing abiltiy either.

5 out of 5 stars The Proper Care and Feeding of a Marriage.......2007-09-16

Dr. Laura, you are amazing! I've been married 25 years to a wonderful man. We have been the best of parents, but have only just begun to be the best of friends and lovers! Thank-you so much for your timeless wisdom. I have already purchased "The Proper Care and Feeding of a Husband" and "The Proper Care and Feeding of a Marriage" for our married daughter and son-in-law. I have been recommending your book to everyone! May God continue to do His work of reconciliation with the help of books like yours. Sincerely, Lydia Sherrin

1 out of 5 stars What a bunch of nonsense!.......2007-07-29

Please save your money and do not buy this drivel. Most of this book is a direct and harsh attack on feminists, and feminism in general. Guess what, Dr. Laura? It's 2007, not 1957. She has no practical or specific suggestions for improving a marriage, just general "smile and be pretty, open your legs and don't complain".

5 out of 5 stars Proper Care & Feeding of Marriage Review.......2007-07-28

As with all Dr. Laura products I was very pleased with this purchase. Her books are so much more than meets the eye. She has a gift for showing how deep and wide even the smallest of things affect yourself and those around you. I would recommend this book to any married couple.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Laura.......2007-07-16

Dr Laura gives down to earth excellent recommendations. It is just that most of us are too selfish to follow them. The recommendations are simple common sense solutions to marriage problems that we in our selfishness try to make into difficult solutions. Instead of thinking of our children's welfare we are only concerned with our own. We have our priorities in the wrong place. We need to grow up and become responsible adults.

Hi,
I love how the book divides the development of human beings by age, physical development, socio-emotional development, and cognitive development. I also love how the important words are highlighted.

4 out of 5 stars Book that tells a story.......2001-12-01

I loved the way the author brought in stories of various children. I felt like I got to know the children throughout their stages of development. A great textbook!

5 out of 5 stars This text is useful for single-parents rearing children........1999-03-12

As a Forensic Psychologist I use this text and recommend it to clients to better understand and appreciate the psycho-developmental needs of their children. Of particular interest to most of those parents are the diverse tables which clarify the expected and unique behaviors of children by age group. This provides those parents with a guide book to assist them in child rearing through age 18. That reference material not only facilitates the parent's understanding of the needs of the child, but also better prepares more effective parenting skills and preparation for developmental issues which are significant in custody and visitation (or access) legal questions. Parents have reported developing a feeling of confidence since they are using scientific data in making parenting decisiions. Legal authorities -- judges and attorneys -- have felt more confident in their recommendations, opinions, and decisions which are based upon evidence. -- Swen Helge, Ph.D.

Book Description

Bennett-Alexander and Hartman’s, Employment Law for Business, 4/e, addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions. Students are shown how to think and analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas without clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ok, not great.......2007-08-05

I liked this law book because it has shorter versons of cases for quick lookup. What I hate about this book is that it doesn't list laws like ADA, Title VII, etc. in their entirety. It speaks about parts of them, but doesn't list them for you to read yourself.

1 out of 5 stars One-sided approach to regulation.......2004-08-04

I would have preferred a text that merely reported employers' compliance obligations in an objective manner, rather than portraying employers as the enemy. I generally found the text to be highly politicized and, to some extent, anti-management. This book does little to bridge the gap between the business community and academia.

4 out of 5 stars Employment Law for business.......2004-01-07

As an attorney, manager, and teacher of human resources professionals, I recommend this book. I found that thie information was thoroughly researched. I also appreciated that the legal information was presented in a business context so that managers who are not lawyers could understand the information and readily appy it to real life workplace problems.

2 out of 5 stars Useful Book........2003-06-22

This is an interesting, informative and useful book. I used it for school and it will be one book that I keep. Great case studies.

2 out of 5 stars Employment Law.......2003-02-17

I think the book is so liberal and it advocate large government. Freedom is not through following the forced laws like affirmative action, ADA, etc. but having a choice especially in employment. Employer should have the say on what they want and who they want to work and not work. The book pretty much tells you that this is the law and its good for you ,so follow or else.
That is socialistic.
We are giving more power to the government to tie us down with more laws and regulation. Their responsibility is to protect the citizens and not to do business. That's for the private sector.

Book Description

The paperback edition of the huge national best–seller in which Dr. Laura Schlessinger–still America's top radio talk show host–gives advice on how women can make their marriage thrive after the wedding bliss subsides.

In her most provocative book yet, Dr. Laura urgently reminds women that to take proper care of their husbands is to ensure themselves the happiness and satisfaction they yearn for in marriage.

Women want to be in love, get married and live happily ever after. Yet disrespect for men and disregard for the value, feelings, and needs of husbands has fast become the standard for male–female relations in America. Those two attitudes clash in unfortunate ways to create struggle and strife in what could be a beautiful relationship.

Countless women call Dr. Laura, unhappy in their marriages and seemingly at a loss to understand the incredible power they have over their men to create the kind of home life they yearn for.

Dr. Laura's simple principles have changed the lives of millions. Now they can change yours.

THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF HUSBANDS have salvaged and revitalized innumerable strained, stagnant, boring, disappointing, annoying, frustrating, and even seemingly dead marriages. I have had women calling almost daily, bitterly criticizing their men, reporting months of seemingly useless martial therapy (aka "gripe hours"), and at their wit's end about what to do with their marriages. After I ask (well, really, nag) them to try just one of the hints found in this book, they call me back amazed at the positive results in their feelings about their men, their husbands' demeanor, and the atmosphere in the home.

She's not intending to solve all the world's problems, but she does speak directly to the heart of MANY problems our American families struggle with in today's culture. Proper Care is a practical, kick-butt, inspiring book that ANY woman would benefit from. It's also a great gift book!

We find in relationships when we have problems that respect is really the biggest issue. Dr. Laura's book " The Proper Care and feeding of husbands" is a mind changing book. Dr. Laura is an in your face kind of gal. When I was in highschool I was first introduced to her by my Latin teacher during a free-period when I helped grade tests, and papers. I was shocked as I had never heard anyhting like her radio show...a strong woman...I was amazed.
I came to read this book years later when I was struggling with a relationship. Everything in this book clicked with me. When you're in a bad way in a relationship- as much as you want it to be right- you create your own barrier most times. It taught me to be respectful, gratuitous, and to remember the hard work that every person commits to the relationship. Instead of nagging about what you don't like- cut some slack and appreciate what you do like.
Dr. Laura also addressed the issue of insecurity. She made me realize that part of why I was not happy with my significant other was because I was not happy with myself. That alone gave me the courage to do what I needed to do for me. It's a book about respecting the ones you love, and respecting yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Have an open mind & it makes sense.......2007-05-27

If you're worried about slipping decades back in the feminist movement by following Dr. Laura's advice, then you'll probably skip right past the common sense advice. Dr. Laura promotes celebrating the differences between husbands and wives. Generation X and all that came after have been brain washed into thinking that there is something wrong with being a woman. This book points out the beauty of how men and women can compliment each other. Men have their roles - they are men. Women have their roles - which are no less valuable to the world or marriage - they are women. This book can truly change your marriage.

3 out of 5 stars Common Sense.......2007-05-11

This book is not as bad as some people have reviewed it to be. Although, I found a lot of the content to be common sense. You know...mutual respect, making the other person in the relationship feel wanted and needed. Plus, it implies that if you follow all this advice, your husband will be putty in your hands. I gave it a shot and did not really see any difference.

5 out of 5 stars This will help your marriage!.......2007-04-28

This book has helped our marriage in more ways than one. Our relationship, our parenting, our intimacy, our friendship. This book was exactly what I needed!

I loved this textbook. I read it for an Infant & Child Development class and found it interesting, clear and helpful. Anyone interested in childhood development should definitely read this book!

1 out of 5 stars This is NOT the textbook!.......2007-03-10

This is a workbook that goes with the textbook, Infants and Children, by Berk, 5th Edition. It is NOT the actual textbook like it seems to be. No one mentions this and I ordered it thinking it was the textbook. It was not clear on the Amazon site, so just be aware!

5 out of 5 stars A Diamond Second Bester...But By A Micro Eyelash.......2006-08-10

From my experience, no other book--at this time--can upend Gonzalez-Mena's INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND CAREGIVERS. In it's seventh edition, it stands as the most near perfect infant/toddler textbook ever created.

Now...Berk's book is probably the best "second-best" textbook that I have found.

She goes from history/theory to basic foundations to each era of children from birth to Age 11. The book is filled with color pictures and color charts along with plenty of special interest sidebar accounts on subjects like the negative side of extended infant child care.

So why is it the second best? It just doesn't cover infants and toddlers exclusively. Instead, it exists as a superbly written book on early childhood growth and development...which isn't such a bad thing.

Check it out if you either can't get Gonzalez-Mena's book or if you just want a second opinion on infant/toddler concepts.

Book Description

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is the incredibly popular and controversial psychotherapist who hosts a nationally syndicated, top-rated midday radio talk show. She has strong convictions and doesn't hesitate to voice them to callers. She urges women emphatically to lose a domineering jerk of a lover and pick one of the "good guys," to stay home and parent the babies they've made, and to follow the dream rather than some dreamboat. Above all, she exhorts women not to blame anybody or anything but themselves if they're unhappy and their lives seem a mess.

10 Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives uses real-world examples from Schlessinger's radio show and private practice to drive the message home. And the message is that our reticence to be bold and brave often makes us act like stupid, submissive victims. Once we muster the courage to take responsibility for our own problems and to tolerate the discomforts of risk, the possibilities for personal growth and joy are limitless.

If you're looking for an all-approving hand to hold, you won't find it here. If you're prepared to take a clear-eyed look at your self-diminishing behavior and to make the move to a quality existence, there's no one better than Schlessinger to keep you honest and to cheer you on. One thing's for sure: You'll never look at your relationships, behaviors and decisions the same way after you've finished reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!.......2007-09-05

During a discussion with a friend of mine about a relationship issue I had, she made me promise to get and read this book. I have to say, it's a definite must read for any girl, lady or women that has any question about a relationship she's in. The author gives so many great examples of her callers and patients that I found myself able to see a clearer picture of what I was doing in my relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-22

I read the 10 Stupid Things Men Do, and thought it was fantastic. Then my girlfriend was reading this one. I had to pick it up and find out what was in it.

Schlessinger hits the truth so consistently. And most of it seems so obvious, as if we should have noticed it right away.

5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2007-02-22

I think that every woman should read this book ~ maybe even a requirement for young women in school. I wish I had read it when I was younger... I might not have squandered so many years doing all the things she says not to do. To me, this is the handbook for women ~ & c'mon, it's a quick, good, & life-changing read!

3 out of 5 stars not very deep.......2007-02-21

It does not have much depth. It basically tells you one thing: as a woman, be independent, do not mentally(emphasis of the book) or economically rely on men. I do not think I learned much by reading the book. Some case stories are interesting but I would expect more depth in explaning why this is so and why this is not so.

But if you are upset or depressed because a man rejected you or something like that, this book may help you feel better because you will know that it does not just happen to you becuase there are so many other more unfortunate women.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I read this as a teenager!.......2007-02-17

No one ever told me these things. This is one fabulous book. I am a university counselor and the young women I see were never told these things either. I recommend it to all of them.

    Book Description

“Edles and Appelrouth's new book is a major contribution for those striving to help students understand the essential place of theory in the sociological enterprise.  It skillfully demonstrates the contemporary relevance of classical theory, elucidates the complex interplay of empirical research and sociological theory, and makes crystal clear that good theory must always be more than idle speculation.  The authors are to be commended for how they interweave biographical sketches, background influences, core ideas, and theoretical orientations, on the one hand, with their inclusion of pivotal primary sources.  This book will likely be template that future texts in theory will try to emulate.”

                                                                            — Edward Lehman, New York University

"Sociological Theory in the Classical Era is an ambitious and successful attempt to revitalize the teaching of sociological theory. The scope of primary readings is wide and inclusive. Their introductory materials are clear and helpful. Their new organizing framework will allow students to clarify the similarities and differences among the wealth of classical readings."

                                                                                  — Jeffrey Alexander, Yale University

“This is one of the best classical theory texts I've come across.  Most undergraduates are unprepared for a serious encounter with the writings of the classical theorists.  Rather than respond to this problem with a textbook full of pat summaries, Edles and Appelrouth ingeniously combine the best of the reader and textbook formats.  Their exegeses of the major themes and arguments of each theorist -- written with a rare combination of theoretical acumen, clarity, and the sure-footed use of examples -- will help students make sense of the well chosen excerpts.  The book thus serves a double purpose: not only will it expose students to the ideas of the classical theorists; it will also help them learn what it really means to read.”

                                                                                        — Neil Gross, Harvard University

Sociological Theory in the Classical Era is a highly-acclaimed new text which utilizes the unique and increasingly popular text/reader approach. The book presents major readings by sociology’s key classical theorists, including Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, Georg Simmel, W.E.B. Du Bois, and George Herbert Mead. The corresponding text written by Laura Desfor Edles and Scott Appelrouth gives students the analytical framework necessary for them to develop a more critical and gratifying understanding of the ideas advanced by these theorists.

The theoretical concepts addressed in the book, while classical, still resonate with contemporary concerns. Topics include the nature of capitalism, the basis of social solidarity of cohesion, the role of authority in social life, the benefits and dangers posed by modern bureaucracies, the dynamics of gender and racial oppression, and the nature of “self” to name but a few.
