Very helpful book.......2007-10-03
This is a good adjunct to the "Triathletes Training Bible". She works with Friel's training concepts and adds meat to them with specific daily/weekly work out plans. She has specific plans for various distances (sprint, olympic, 1/2 and full Ironman), events (Tri and Duo), and various preparation time periods (12 weeks to 6 months to full year). I think she also incorporates some of the efficiency techniques suggested in Niles "Time Saving Training" and mentions his book as a good resource. It's a well written and interesting book with lots of good info and help in laying out your training and establishing a workable long term plan.
Training Plans for Multisport Athletes: Your Essential Guide to Triathlon, Duathlon, XTERRA, Ironman, and Endurance Racing .......2007-09-13
I was looking for a comprehensive training plan for one year, most books will offer a 12-16 week program. This book delivered the full plan, and I have used it as a beginner triathlete to prepare for multiple sprint and olympic distance races. The nutrition chapter is also excellent.
Finally, a book with easy to follow training plans.......2007-06-22
I've bought a few triathlon training books in my day, and most of them are just full of theory, scientific jargon and a lot of technical nonsense. This book, however, lists everything in an easy to follow fashion, from proper nutrition to how your body type will react to training. And the best thing about this book are the endless training plans that it includes (from sprint to full Ironman), for those who are just starting out to those who have done this for a while and just want to get faster. Plus it lists training for Xterra-type races and duathlons as well, which I definitely want to participate in. I love it!
Excellent training source.......2007-06-09
I bought this book to help with my half-ironman training. It's excellent for all different triathalons!!! Wonderfully written with a ton of information.
This book packs in a lot of information..........2007-05-30
In her book, Training Plans for Multisport Athletes, Gale Bernhardt offers great tips, instruction, and structured training plans that cover many multisport distances. As a reader will note, Gale is a disciple of and now contemporary to Joe Friel; so, the owner of Friel's "Bible" will feel instantly at ease reading and understanding Gale's perspective on preparing for multisport competition.
At the same time, a complete neophyte could pick up this book and quickly get up to speed on his/her journey down the multisport path. Gale's writing style is easy to understand and the paths she lays out vis a vis her plans are easy to follow.
This is a great book that will benefit new multisport participants as well as seasoned veterans.

surprised.......2007-10-10
I was very surprised when i read this book because there is a lot of junk getting around, i have a wonderful knowledge of all things physical and its hard for me to find information that i dont already know and then this book came along, granted im new to triathlon but this book has not only given me direction but goals and great programs to get from A to B. I would have paid $1000.00+ for this book, thank you Don.
BIG Energy GIVER!!!.......2007-09-30
This book is incredible. I have read many books in my long period on earth, but this one has possibly changed my life the most. I bought this book after slogging through Gordo's book left me overwhelmed.
Don Fink lays everything out in plain language. He never makes miraculous claims, certainly there is no easy way to becoming an Ironman. However, he presents examples of folks busier than me who have done it, and done it well. He presents them, not in a glorfied way, but as humans to whom we can all relate. ( In fact reading his book has made me Karen Smyers fan all the way! )
Equally important to Fink's training strategies, are his lifestyle suggestions. Catching quick naps, managing time, family meetings....these are all concepts we can employ on or off season. However, I found the single most brilliant feature of the book to be Don's concept of identifying life's "energy givers" versus "energy takers" and using your own power to minimize your exposure to the latter. Reading this book taught me that I have some control over what life dishes out to me, and how much I let it effect my race. I take this concept with me along my journey in life every day - as well as the confidence that came with finishing an Iron triathlon.
Anyone who has ever dreamed of finishing an Ironman -- even if it is a decade away on your time plan, PLEASE read this book.
Mis print on book cover.......2005-12-14
The book actually contains 3 different training programs based on a 30 week training cycle. The book cover refers, incorrectly, to 12 week programs.
Inspiring and Informative.......2005-10-07
I've read a dozen or so books on triathlon. Some are more informative (like Complete Triathon Book by Matt Fitzgerald and The Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Friel) and some are more inspiring (like Becoming an Ironman by Kara Douglas Thom), but this book strikes a nice balance between being informative and inspiring. I especially like the many tips on time management--how to work your full training program around demands of work and family. So why not 5 stars? I think the book should have been 50 pages longer and included more depth in some of the important subjects that all triathletes need to know about.
Closest thing to a shortcut.......2004-12-26
It took me years of injuries, online training plans, and ill-spent money to learn what Mr. Fink has consolidated into 280 pages. If you are an Ironman or aspiring Ironman, this book belongs in your training library.
Most Ironman triathletes spend as much time fretting about their training as they do actual training. If you are serious about Ironman, you will certainly buy many more training books, however, this one is the best I have found that touches on all of the essential elements of a successful Ironman campaign.
The Table of Contents reads like the 17 Commandments of Ironman training:
The Dream, Time Mngmt, Essential Workouts, Training Cycle, Gradual Adaptation, Heart Rate Training, 30-week Training Plans, Flexibility and Strength, Training Races, Technique, Transitions, Equipment, Strategies, Mental Training, Goal Setting, Maintenance, Recovery.
Amen.

Book Description
Bo has been at war with his father for as long as he can remember. The rage he feels gives him the energy as a triathlete to press his body to the limit, but it also translates into angry outbursts toward his teachers.
Now dangerously close to expulsion from school, Bo has been assigned to Anger Management sessions with the school "truants." With an eclectic mix of hard-edged students, Bo may finally have to deal with his long-brewing hatred for his father -- before it eats away at him completely.
Customer Reviews:
Chris Crutcher ROCKS!.......2007-09-03
Chris Crutcher, award-winning Young Adult fiction author, whose newest book, Deadline, is set to be released any day now, graciously allowed me to integrate elements of his novel, Ironman, into my novel, Courage in Patience, which is currently on submission to several publishing houses.
The headline, "Chris Crutcher rocks!" is bellowed by one of my characters, Kevin Cooper, who, prior to reading Ironman in his summer school class with the main character, Ashley, had never read a book in its entirety before.
"This book has FOOTBALL, man!" Kevin says.
As a public school teacher, I am keenly aware of the necessity of "hooking" young adult readers, by writing stories that they will relate to. I have Chris Crutcher to thank for that, because it was reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and Ironman that made me realize that there was a market for the stories inside of me. I could write truthful, authentic stories that would be embraced by young people and adults. I could reach them where they are.
Ironman is used in Courage in Patience as a way of drawing the characters into an exploration of their own truths. Beverly Asher, the main character's stepmother and the teacher of the English II summer school class, calls her class a "Quest for Truth."
I will be eternally grateful to Chris Crutcher for allowing me to use his wonderful book within my own.
In addition, I pay homage to Chris's style of alternating first-and-third person points-of-view-- which he used so skillfully in Ironman, to draw the reader more deeply into the story.
I can't wait to receive my copy of Chris's newest novel, Deadline!
SOMETIMES THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE LIFE IS TO FIND THE COURAGE TO FINALLY LIVE.
Courage in Patience
Ashley Nicole Asher's life changes forever on the night her mother, Cheryl, meets Charlie Baker. Within a year of her mother's marriage to Charlie, typical eight-year-old Ashley's life becomes a nightmare of sexual abuse and emotional neglect. Bundling her body in blankets and sleeping in her closet to try to avoid Charlie's nighttime assaults, she is driven by rage at age 14 to to tell her mother, in spite of the threats Charlie has used to keep Ashley silent. Believing that telling will make Charlie go away, instead it reveals to Ashley where she lies on her mother's list of priorities.
"We're just going to move on now," Cheryl tells Ashley. "Go to your room." Ashley's psyche splinters into shards of glass, and she desperately tries to figure a way out, while at the same time battling numbness and an inability to remember what happened when she blacked out after Charlie tackled her. She knew that when she awoke her clothes were disheveled and the lower-half of her body was covered in bright red blood-- but she has only a blank spot in the "video" of her memory.
When Ashley's friend, Lisa, sees a note from Cheryl telling Ashley that Charlie would never "do those things to her," and insisting that she apologize for accusing him of molesting her, Lisa forces dazed Ashley to make an outcry to her teacher, Mrs. Chapman.
By the end of the day, Ashley's father, David, who has not seen Ashley since she was three months old, is standing in the offices of Child and Family Services. He brings her home to the small East Texas town of Patience, where he lives with his wife, Beverly, their son, Ben, and works with his brother, Frank. Its neighboring town, Six Shooter City, is so quirky, it's practically on the cusp of an alternate universe; a trip to the Wal-Mart reveals to visitors that "there's either something in the water..or family trees around here don't fork."
Through the summer school English class/ Quest for Truth taught by Beverly, an "outside-the-box" high school English teacher whose passion for teaching comes second only to her insistence upon authenticity, Ashley comes to know Roxanne Blake, a girl scarred outwardly by a horrific auto crash and inwardly by the belief that she is "Dr. Frankenstein's little experiment";
Wilbur "Dub" White, a fast-talking smart mouth whose stepfather is a white supremacist who nearly kills a man while Dub watches from the shadows, forcing Dub to realize that he cannot live with the person that he is, any longer;
Zaquoiah "Z.Z." Freeman, one of the few African-Americans in Patience, whose targeted-for-extinction family inherited the estate of one of Patience's founding families and has been given the charge to "turn this godforsaken town on its head";
Hector "Junior" Alvarez, a father at sixteen whose own father was killed in prison, who works two jobs and is fueled by the determination to "do it right" for his son, "3", and his girlfriend, Moreyma;
T.W. Griffin, whose football-coach father expects him to be Number One at everything, and whose mother naively believes that he is too young to think about sex; and
Kevin Cooper, a not-so-bright football player with a heart of gold, whose mother, Trini, a reporter for the local paper, is instrumental in exposing the ugliness that is censorship.
Every person in the class is confronted with a challenge that they must face head-on. The choices they make will not be easy--but they will be life-altering. With the exception of her mother and step-father, Ashley is surrounded by people who overcome their fear to embrace authenticity and truth-- the only way to freedom. But will Ashley have the inner-fortitude to survive the journey to recovery and the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? Will Ashley find her voice, speak up for herself, and break the bondage of her abusive past?
Realizing "she's gonna need a lot more than we have," David and Bev enlist the help of Scott "Dr. Matt" Matthews, an experienced, slightly unconventional therapist who insists that Ashley can and must come out of hiding in the closet in her mind.
The Chris Crutcher novel, Ironman, is taught by Beverly Asher in the summer school class. When T.W.'s overbearing parents read the book, they decide that the book should be censored, and they involve the pastor of Patience's largest, most conservative church to lead the fight through the Purify Patience organization. Its mission is to cleanse Patience of Profanity, Promiscuity, and Parent-Bashing Pedagogy--all complaints the group has about the novel, Ironman. Its hidden agenda, however, is to return Patience to a time when "Patience was 100% white", "women knew their place","everyone had plenty of money", and "Christian values were taught in school."
The censoring, pseudo-Christian, white-supremacist, misogynist organization is exposed for what it is in a courageous move by one of its own (well..his mother threatens to twist his ear off if he doesn't speak up), isolating the pastor and causing most of his "flock" to deny they ever knew him. National and world press attention shine speculation on the dirty little secrets hidden in Patience, and its inhabitants are forced to examine their own values and beliefs.
Alone in the dark, Ashley must face her worst fears in a pivotal scene between her, Charlie, and her mother. Will she find the strength to advocate for her own right to exist in a world that is free of fear and abuse? Can she, like her friends, find Courage in Patience?
Ironman.......2007-04-27
Beauregard Brewster, nicknamed Bo, is a 17-year-old, angry, trouble-maker. Bo was forced to choose between either having an in-home tutor or attending an anger management class, taught by Mr. Nakatani. In the class Bo met and fell in love with Shelly, a tough young woman training to be an American Gladiator. Bo's self-training to become an ironman, for the Yukon Jack challenge, was a major part of the book. Mr. Lionel Serbousek, one of Bo's teachers, allowed Bo to be on the college swim team he coached. Chris Crutcher tackles serious social issues such as anger management and relationships effectively through his use of format. Ironman is written through narration and letters, which Bo wrote to Larry King, a talk show icon. Crutcher gives an outsider's view of what is happening in the story as well as letting the reader hear Bo's thoughts. These letters reveal the honest struggle of Bo frustrated by his anger, his father, teachers, threats by Ian and thoughts, both nonsexual and sexual, of Shelly. As all of these are thoughts and issues which teenagers face, Crutcher uses language that is used by teenagers which adds to the book's authenticity. Consequently, an accurate description of a teenager's life is depicted.
Ironman.......2007-03-12
great book for young adults. Lots of themes and examples that can relate to adolescent lives.
Anger Management.......2007-02-13
Seventeen-year-old Beauregard Brewster is having trouble with authority figures--specifically his father and his English teacher at school. Both of these people push Beau's buttons and make him explode, which gets him into more trouble. His relationship with his teacher lands him in a before-school anger management class, with a bunch of other kids who seem to have problems much worse than Beau's. He learns to support them and let them support him as he learns to deal with his father and his teacher and strives to achieve his goal of competing in the Yukon Jack Ironman triathlon. Throughout the book Beau writes letters to radio and TV talk show host Larry King, and many of his feelings and problems come through in these letters.
Chris Crutcher's characters are fantastic. The main character in this story is interesting and sarcastic, and I liked that Lionel, a character from one of Crutcher's other books, made an appearance in this one. I like that this story isn't sugarcoated. Bad things happen to some of the characters, and they all deal with it and go on with their lives. The teens in this book fight against the things holding them down, which is admirable.
Interesting on many levels.......2007-01-14
This novel addresses so many issues that teens face today. The way the relationships between the characters develop keeps the reader hooked page after page. This is a good one for reluctant male readers with average or above reading skills.

Should be a part of every bodybuilders library........2007-02-05
Although dated this book contains good information and guidelines to advance your training. Every new bodybuilder should study this book!
Informative and Enjoyable Compilation of Ironman Articles.......2006-08-24
I've been reading this Ultimate Bodybuilding Encylopedia for the last few weeks and I find it very useful and motivating.
This is very different than Arnold's encylopedia, not better or worse just different. If you want a systematic and comprehensive guide to bodybuilding exercises and their performance then Arnold's is what I would recommend. Note that (in my opinion), many of the routines are geared more for someone w/ performance enhancing drugs and would severly overtrain most natural bodybuilders. Still, Arnold's book is incredibly comprehensive and has been updated since the original release.
The Ironman encyclopedia is more of a collection of articles from Ironman issues over the years. The great thing about that is you get a variety of points of view and approaches which is excellent.
The price of the book is VERY inexpensive compared to what one would have to pay if you were to buy the same volume of valuable information in magazines.
Personally I'm not a big fan of the overall direction bodybuilding has gone with the extreme juice monsters, but this book has a mix of material that can cater to a natural bodybuilder as well as those into the more extreme aspects of the sport. In addition to the many excellent articles, there are photographs which contain bodybuilders from both "schools" of bodybuilding which is not something you find very often.
I've recently purchased the Ironman Natural Bodybuilding Book which is also excellent for those interested in focusing specifically on a drug free approach (though certainly some of the extreme supplementation used by "natural" bodybuilders almost approaches a middle ground between completely natural and pharmaceuticals).
For me the most important thing has been learning the difference between how to approach training from a natural point of view. I train for health and appearance, but not even remotely with the idea of competition, and it's been great to learn so much about how to workout hard without overtraining, especially for someone drug free like myself.
A lot of attention is paid to the fact that natural bodybuilders/weight trainers really have to learn how NOT to overtrain, something I most definitely did many years ago. I worked out way too much and really hit a wall.
Anyway, the different articles contained in this book has a plethora of interesting information that I think most people interested in pumping iron will find useful and enjoyable to read.
Another thing I really appreciate in the book is the honest discussion of the various drugs being used by non-natural bodybuilders. I especially liked the fact that Ironman had the guts to have interview with the anonymous IFBB Olympia competitor who frankly discusses the insane drug combinations he uses to stay competitive and the dangerous health issues he faces from that use. It's such an over the top interview that it actually had me going "Is this for real?", but most certainly it is. I've talked with several athletes who have used performance enhancing drugs and they suffered greatly from the side effects so this interview rang true to me.
It still amazes me that the IFBB hasn't tried to clean up and legitimize this sport into a sport that people can take seriously. Instead, they've taken a great sport and turned it into a freak show. They've created an environment that is horrific for the athletes, men and woman who should exemplify health and instead exemplify drugs. This Ironman book, while still featuring many "juiced up" bodybuilders, at least doesn't shy away from the truth about these drugs where many other publications have a "don't ask don't tell" approach.
Highly recommended!
Very Resourceful.......2004-07-10
I always rely on this book, scanning over and over certain mass-gaining strategies, like the featured article, "Compound Aftershock", which is an awesome biceps/triceps program that potentially explodes your arms.
This book is awesome because it includes 3 to 5 pages of weightlifting stories from classic natural bodybuilders like Bill Pearl, Larry Scott, Mike Mentzer, Arnold, Tom Platz, and others too. For instance, Tom Platz explains how he made his legs huge and musculur. Also, how Larry made his football-sized biceps grow so huge with his routine. One bodybuilder will tell you that a good triceps exercise for gaining triceps mass is the decline barbell extentions, which is very effective for me when I superset it with dumbell kickbacks. I've never seen this type of growth before.
I've only read half of the book so far and yet I'm gaining mass.
If you have trouble gaining mass, scan over the "Training With A System" section. It makes you see your mistakes with the possibility of overtraining, using too much weight, inefficient diet, or too much strees. This article shows you how to prevent it.
Ironman's section on the mental aspects of training is especially motivating and convincing--making you eager to workout and get huge.
The Nutrition aspect of this book is weak though. One article is about vegetarianism, which I have no clue why they introduced such an inappropriate diet for a bodybuilder. However, they still give a few pages of bodybuilding type diets that you can gain mass upon.
This book will never bore you because I find that I am always reading new ways to build mass from reading this book and that has helped me eliminate worthless workout routines. Terrific Paperback Compendium For Workout Enthusiast!.......2004-01-10
Other than regular access to a good gym with all the right equipment and all the necessary nutrition, nothing is so important to the aspiring bodybuilder than information, and everyone from the neophyte to more experienced muscle bombers will find everything they need to grow into the body they dream of in this wonderful bodybuilder's encyclopedia. Culled from a variety of sources from deep within the culture of the west coast bodybuilding havens of Venice Beach and Santa Monica, this compendium of relevant information and sage advice has been produced by veteran bodybuilding coach Peter Sisco, who used extensive interviews with bodybuilding stars and the mounds of information produced by research technicians associated with Ironman magazine, who also produced a wide variety of helpful publications such as this one. You will find everything you need here, from the best way to flare your quadriceps to the best way to widen your shoulders by bombing the lateral heads of the deltoids.
Given all this, the book is both highly informative and quite inspirational, showcasing a number of recent bodybuilding luminaries, using both photographs and drawings to illustrate correct exercise performance, useful training techniques, and the latest in scientific breakthroughs that are on the very cutting edge of what contemporary bodybuilders are using to constantly attempt to get even bigger, stronger, and more striated and cut. Using the treasure-trove of Ironman's photographic archives, Sisco has produced one of the best single volume works covering the waterfront of bodybuilding yet. It compares well to the standard Weider's "Ultimate Bodybuilding", Schwarzenegger's version of the book, and even Bill Pearl's superb "Keys To The Inner Universe". This is a book that works well for the bodybuilding enthusiast wanting or needing a handy reference volume he can throw in his gym bag and read between sets at the local iron dungeon. Enjoy!
Very Good Book.......2001-06-02
This book is a compilation of articles from Ironman Magazine. They've been carefully chosen by the editor, Pete Sisco. The articles on training are the best ones that the magazine has to offer. As with all bodybuilding books, you'll want to pick-and-choose which routines and advice you want to adopt. I thought the book was a 4-Star book rather than a 5-Star book for the following reasons: 1) The section on Nutrition was weak. It didn't really address cutting edge nutrition questions, but focused--unusually, I thought--on variations (e.g., vegetarianism), and 2) it's a 2-color book. This is probably a nit, but the magazine is 4-color, and 4-color photos reproduced as 2-color lose something (especially if they haven't been "color corrected"). But these aren't really slams on the book as a whole...4-Stars is pretty good. The one thing I wanted to say above all else, is that Pete Sisco has done the bodybuilding world a huge service by including the anonymous interview with a "Top Pro" bodybuilder and his use of steroids and other drugs. What an eye-opener. [Good job, Pete.] This chapter will let you see why steroids and other drugs are such a disaster for the long-term health of bodybuilding athletes. I hope younger bodybuilders will read that chapter especially, and make the commitment to train as "naturals". It's a really good book, and you'd do well to have it in your bodybuilding library.
Book Description
A collection of personal stories about the experience of competing in one's first Ironman triathlon. This is the ultimate test of endurance: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all raced end-to-end in one grueling day-and these stories tell it straight: what to expect, how to prepare, what was rewarding, what was miserable. These stories come from men and women of all ages and abilities. Some are stories from the champions, and some from those who did not finish. Together they testify to all the joy and agony of the race; and they provide priceless personal advice on nutrition, equipment, clothing, mental preparation, emotional fatigue, terrain, and weather. An unforgettable ode to an extraordinary endurance sport-a book for anyone who wants to become an ironman.

Great Read!.......2007-01-03
This book is a great read for someone training for their first IM. The stories give you an idea of what to expect when the big day comes. They also are very inspiring.
Wasn't what I thought.......2006-11-06
This book is great to read about different stories of various people who become Ironman. Just a collection of short stories. It was interesting.
very inspiring stories, but it can get repetitive.......2005-09-23
"Becoming an Ironman" is a collection of personal stories of the first experience of many athletes attempting their first Ironman Triathlon. An Ironman Triathlon is a race consisting of a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike ride followed by a marathon (26.2 miles). Some runners may consider the marathon to be the ultimate endurance event and with good reason, the marathon is not to be taken lightly, but Ironman only lets you run a marathon after one has traveled 114.4 miles. Since "Ironman" is actually a trademark of the World Triathlon Corporation, the "Ironman" name can only be used for a race sponsored by the WTC. But any triathlon of 140.6 miles can be considered an "Iron" distance race and the finishers are no less an Ironman as those finishing a sponsored race. 140.6 miles is a long, long way to go, and typically there is a 17 hour time limit. In "Becoming an Ironman" many athletes will tell of their experience in their own words.
The stories contained in this book are broken into a variety of sections. There are stories from those who are middle of the pack athletes and who struggled with the Ironman but still found strength to complete it. There is a section featuring athletes who learned in their first attempt that they were quite good at this distance and turned in excellent times which put them among the leaders. Conversely the stories of those who finished Ironman with only a minute or an hour to spare are no less compelling. Then there are the Did Not Finish (DNF) stories of those who for one reason or another had to drop out of the race or just could not make it to the finish line in time (the one who finished some six minutes after 17 hours was tough to take).
Every one of these stories provides inspiration to push through my pain in a race and furthers my desire to one day attempt and complete an Ironman despite the pain I know it will cause. But these same stories collected in "Becoming an Ironman" suffers from the fact that while reading a handful of these stories is easy and inspiring, reading every story back to back becomes repetitive. Yes, everyone struggled and gutted it out and provides a reason to be inspired, but it is essentially the same story every time with minor variations. The different sections helps as the stories are grouped into similar kinds of experiences, but it is still a lot of take at one time.
My recommendation is that this is an excellent book about the Ironman experience from the perspective of the average (if "average" can describe anyone attempting Ironman) athlete, but the reader should only read a few stories a day. Each story is only a few pages long and this way there will be less of a sense of burnout by the time the end is reached. Inspiring stuff, here.

Flawed, but well worth reading........2005-09-20
I'm not training for an ironman and never have, but a friend who's done one gave me this book to read and I rather feel inclined to do one now. I'm training for my first marathon now and, at the risk of getting ahead of myself, I'm already looking to bigger and better things.
This book, I'll admit, is a bit repetitive at times. It consists of a couple-dozen 5-10 page stories about people's ironmans. I found the four DNF stories the most interesting and meaningful. Many of the stories end up sounding the same; "it was hard, I got really tired, but I made it!". Nonetheless, I think the insight from these people is pretty cool and I'd recommend this before taking on the challenge oneself.
Elsewhere I saw somebody mention a problem with this book was the lack of info on each person and I agree fully. There is a short paragraph at the end of each story about what the person is doing now but that's it. I'd like some more details like: Did they compete much in the past (if they didn't mention it in their essay, you have no clue)? What training approach did they use (I don't want a training manual, but still)?
My wife, who will read anything, found this book incredibly boring. Other than the DNF section, she couldn't be bothered, but then again I think only really endurance competitors understand why they do it so it's not a book intended for a wide audience.
Ironman inspiration!.......2005-01-13
This book is filled with the inspiring first-person accounts of Ironman participants. It provides a personal insight into the struggles and aspirations of a wide variety of competitors, from first-time amateurs to seasoned professionals. The stories are compelling and personal - the writing is not edited much at all, allowing the voice of the writer to come through strongly, so that each story offers a unique perspective. I found the book consistently moving and inspirational, and although I'm just starting to train for my first triathlon, I can't help but dream of one day becoming an Ironman myself! If you have any interest in triathlons, or endurance sports in general, or if you just enjoy reading about personal athletic triumph, read this book.

Good Starting Place.......2006-11-10
I found this book to be helpful as a reference guide. It is a nice quick version of Endurance training and the 24 week training program is good, as it breaks down the workouts into specific training segments.
I am training for my first Ironman and will use this book in conjunction with others to develop a solid training plan.
Good Book, But Misleading Book Description!.......2004-03-12
I purchased this book based on the description that it was for beginner or intermediate triathletes ready to move from sprint distance races to olympic or half-iron distance races. The book actually presents a 24-week training plan for an Ironman distance race. There is a lot of great information in the up-front chapters - descriptions of different types of workouts, etc, but if you are not planning to train for an Ironman, the rest of the book may not be very helpful to you.

glad I ordered it.......2007-09-26
It was exactly what I was hoping for. A book to inspire, not to train. I will be reading it several more times. If you looking for fun stories, touching moments and an "I can do this" helper, then this is your book.
Book Description
Todd Crandell's drug use and drinking destroyed his life. In his 20s, he had gone from being a promising student to a homeless, starving, and drug-addicted ghost of himself. After several brutal and harrowing encounters with rock-bottom, he decided to quit cold-turkey; then he took up triathlons, and found that athletic effort helped him overcome his addictions. He now competes regularly in full Ironman triathlons, works as a professional speaker and drug counselor, and runs a foundation (Racing for Recovery) helping others to use sports and positive endeavor to escape addiction. A mesmerizing, inspirational story of self-destruction and resurrection.
Customer Reviews:
Brutally honest. Inspiring to anyone who battles any kind of addiction and is looking for a better way........2006-11-14
Crandell is an inspiration. He pulls no punches in chronicling his nearly lethal addiction to alcohol and drugs -- and the price he and those around him paid for that addiction. What clicked for me, in addition to the requisite war stories, was the notion that you can't get sober until you decide to do it for yourself. As inspiring as Crandell's recovery is his desire to help others who struggle with addiction by founding his non-profit Racing For Recovery. This is a guy who can't do things half-way -- not drugs, not sobriety. So, what does he do after he sobers up and is looking for a new challenge? The Ironman. And he's risking everything to turn this new interest in sports and triathlons into a support program for recovering addicts.
I'm biased as I had the privilege of watching Todd run the Ironman Kona this summer 2006 as his guest. Todd's for real. If you're an addict or know an addict and are looking for some answers or simply some sympathetic company this is a good place to start. And the book is just the beginning. To really understand where Todd's from and where he's going -- and how you might be part of that -- get in touch with him and the foundation. He'll probably take your call or answer your email. himself. He cares this much.
Todd Crandell is a true inspiration & roll model since his recovery.......2006-05-02
Racing for Recovery: From Addict to Ironman is an inspirational story. How it conveys that if a dream exists, even the darkest depths of addiction can be overcome once you decide to and make the effort to get help. The way Todd Crandell brought himself from these depths and has dedicated his life to the pursuit of preventing drug and alcohol in children and showing those currently battling addiction that, through a lifestyle of fitness and exercise, proves that you can recover and dreams can come true.

Not that good........2003-08-31
Do NOT buy this book. If you buy it, please buy my used one listed in Amazon Used Books. Pardon me for my english in my writing. It is second language for me.
This book is not such a good one. Bob Babbit writes a better magazine called Competitor. I guess I expect too much of him and the book fall short on expectation.
I buy book because he make an ad in his magazine I pick up in California. This book not so good.
The Ironman Triathlon World Championships Desk Reference.......2003-06-11
If you know who Bob Babbitt is, you don't need any other reason to purchase his book. In that case, I will assure you that it is everything you could possibly expect from the editor of Competitor Magazine and then some. As you read the captions and relive the moments in each year's race summary, you can't help but smile with gleeful anticipation of your next trip to the finish line. If you have difficulty explaining your compulsive addiction to your family and friends, this book will help bridge the gap. The pictures are stunning not only in their completeness but also in the quality with which they have been reproduced. You might remember the scene from a videotape or broadcast or maybe you were even lucky enough to see it live. But never have you seen the athletes leap from such glossy pages with the detail and ferocity that they do from Babbitt's creation.
Still, perhaps you don't really know who Bob is. Honestly, I didn't realize he had been inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame in 2001 until I saw the list in his book. I understood his mantra and I have always been happy to digest his publication whenever I stumble upon it. But, I never really assimilated what was so unique about Bob Babbitt until the night I spent with my nose glued to the pages of his book. I read every word, cover to cover. This was the night before a relatively important half Ironman race. I should have been sleeping, but I was transfixed.
I had always wondered why so many have said that Bob Babbitt has given back more to the sport than anyone else. The answer to my confusion lies entirely in the perspective that this humble and humourous man so graciously shares with anyone and everyone. Yes, you can get all of the factual history from Tinley's voluminous musings. And you get get the buzz of Kona from reading Mike Plant's Iron Will. You can be an armchair pro by reading about Brad Kearns' adventures. You can obsess about every detail of each workout in your schedule with Joel Friel's guidance. But none of these experiences give you the cumulative clarity and insight you get from Babbitt.
Babbitt's true gift to all of us is his understanding of how we view the giants and dwarfs of our sport, how we obsess about the great battles all the way from the front to the back. Babbitt can see exactly how we respect the grueling journey, the brutal conditions and obscene distances that make Kona so much more than just another race. Sure, Phil Liggett can bark through the leaderboard with his charming accent and amusing wit. Mike Riley can keep a crowd dancing for hours. Both of them are legends of our sport and without them it just wouldn't feel authentic. But neither of them can bring the experience home to your coffee table after the fact the way Babbitt has. While it may be impossible to dislike Babbitt and his clearly selfless ambitions, it is even more difficult to put on his glasses and not see Kona more clearly than you ever did before. You simply cannot read his words and not feel the excitement and drama he wants to share with you.
There are only two pages of the book that really don't belong, 48 and 49. They exist as a sad testament to the reality that nothing about triathlon seems to make any financial sense. Those two pages, however, are overwhelmingly offset by 126 and 127. Relive those 80's haircuts, see Jurgen in his Zorro shot, and revel in the cheesy humor that Babbitt has gotten all too good at through the years. If you want one reason to convince you of Babbitt's greatness, flip to this pair of pages and stay a while. In a sense, it's a mild spatterring of his life's work. It's also an extremely abbreviated list of the major players in Kona. But look beyond the faces, hair, gear, and race attire and you'll see Bob Babbitt waving at you from the pages of his book. He is inviting you to share his vision for a moment, making you feel like the most honored guest he has ever known as he serves up heaping portions of grit, determination, courage, and desire.
I put together the best multisport race of my life the day after reading this book. Thanks Bob!
The Go To Book.......2003-06-10
Forget about the coffee table,t his book is one you should keep by your bed side and dream of the Ironman.
In one book, the author manages to capture the characters and color that define the Ironman Triathlon-this will become the quintessential history on the event and it earns the 25th anniversary title.
From the historical race figures such as Dave Scott and Mark Allen to the Judy Molnars, this book reaches the common reader and fanatic. The pictures are great, I am going to take mine with me all season and have people autograph their pages...Enjoy it!
Beautiful and Amazing.......2003-05-30
This is truly a coffee table book - the photographs are stunning and the stories are amazing. The Hawaiian Ironman is a special race and this book conveys all the beauty, drama, joy, and pain that make up the unique experience of the race.
Leave this book on your coffee table and you will be touched again and again by the memorable images and inspirational stories. The people who have finished this race are truly amazing individuals and they are colorfully profiled in this book. A must have for anyone who dreams of calling themselves an "Ironman."
