dividends resurface.......2007-01-27
The professor touts stocks and funds that feature dividends.Up until 1958 dividend income on stocks exceeded the interest income on long term bonds. For this reason it is difficult to assume that the good professors recommendation to go for dividend income is a prudent strategy when his data is biased by a condition that does not exist in today's market. I would prefer to use index funds that provide excellent diversification and insure that you are being compensated for the risks taken. To explore this strategy I can recommend a book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market Buy 2500 different stocks Pay no commission. It takes off where this book ends.
Investing does not take a lot of work, in fact, the more you read of the wrong material of which there is an abundant supply, the more you will trade, and the less you will make in the market.
Active buying and selling of stocks by individuals will only run up brokerage commissions and waste your time and money. Turning your money over to a professionally managed mutual fund is even worse because of the fees you are required to pay well compensated `experts' to waste their time. This book shows you how to invest using index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds.
This book can be read and understood in 45 minutes to an hour.

Classic Siegel.......2007-01-17
For those who have read "Stocks for the Long Run", this is right up that same alley in terms of style and no-frills content, after all, it is written by a researcher. However, this is a great book with lots of wisdom to digest. Siegel discusses the "growth trap", a very counterintuitive point that everyone should be aware of....it alone makes the book worth reading. If you are a serious investor/advisor it is a must read. I would caution those who would take this book and start trying to manage a portfolio of all high dividend paying stocks...Siegel's conclusions are insightful, but the right application of them is still critical. Good Book, Has Some Holes.......2006-09-19
The Future for Investors has some really great points - the main one being that the compounding power of reinvested dividends should be a significant consideration in stock selection. I agree with this approach, and Siegel makes some persuasive arguments that it provides higher returns and less volitility than other approaches.
However, I agree with some of the criticisms of the book as well:
1) Siegel does not address the tax impact on dividends. His research uses 1957 as a starting point. While our current dividend tax rate is 15% at the federal level, during most of the period from 1957 the rate was higher (sometimes the same as the income rate). During these times, the reinvested amount of the dividend would have only been about 60-70% of the total. Thus, returns would have been lower. (Some people have said that this would only make a marginal difference - maybe so, but it might have changed his argument in comparing Standard Oil to IBM as well as the small advantages he pointed out in some of his stock recomendations. A 1% per annum difference over a multi-decade period amounts to serious money).
2) Siegel cites Altria as the best performing stock during this period. I won't disagree with the conclusion, but I will point out that going for high dividends and reinvesting them works well only when the company survives. What if Beth Steel had been your choice rather than Altria? You would have received lots of dividends and reinvested them, but the ultimate outcome would have been a disaster. The point is that reinvesting dividends works especially well when the reinvestment happens during a difficult time for the stock AND (most importantly) the stock MUST recover from those difficult times. This is not generally the case, but it was with Altria.
3) Siegel's idea that the developed world will sell assets (stocks, bonds, etc) to the developing world to fund the huge retirement wave is full of problems. While the strategy will work to maintain the standard of living of the baby boomers, it will also permanently ruin the future for all subsequent generations of Americans. If you sell the assets (companies) that create your wealth in order to live a comfortable retirement (read consumption), you are giving away your ability to earn in the future. This is something Warren Buffett has been warning us about for a few years now. You cannot indefinitely fund consumption with income producing assets. When you decrease your income producing assets by selling for consumption, you increase your current standard of living at the expense of your future standard of living.
Criticisms aside, this is still a thought provoking book that is well written. Ironically, even though I think there are some questions about many parts of the book, I generally agree with the ultimate types of investments that Siegel recommends - just for different reasons.

I have been an Investment Counselor for over 40 years. This book makes more common sense than any book I have read on the subject. My main regret is that is wasn't around earlier. It is the key to Wealth and Security.

I have owned the Brightwork book for many years and always find myself checking back with it when I do a project. I bought this book as an update for the original but have found it invaluable as an adjunct to the original text. This is the perfect reference to have aboard or in the shop with you while you are doing the project. It effectivly updates the original text in a couple of critical areas and I highly recommend it. Thanks to these two books, no one need fear varnishing again! It is gospel!

A lot of the comments from people who recently bought this old (but good) book for the software, were not diligent enough to think about contacting the author. I contacted the author and he mailed me an updated version of the software that comes with the book. He was very kind and cordial.
Good Book with Outdated Software.......2003-10-18
The good news is that this book is very nicely done, providing a useful foundation to beginner and intermediate options traders. I found that I learned quite a lot about the interactions between option pricing and the various factors influencing pricing. The author provides numerous case study examples utilizing the OP-EVAL(TM) software included with the book. A majority of the book contains detailed examples describing how to use the software and interpret the output. The bad news is that the software will not run on current Windows operating systems (Windows 98 or newer). So don't buy the book if you want to try the software on your own. Efforts to contact the author, through the publisher McGraw-Hill, about the possibility of updating the software, have been unsuccessful. Otherwise a good book.
5 Stars is not enough.......2002-04-05
From the beginning pages, the explanations are flowing and account for all levels of competency in options. When you finish the very readable book, you will have a solid understanding of index options. The graphs are excellent while the mathematical concepts are carefully explained. I have traded stock options successfully for the past ten years and I now have enough confidence in my knowledge of index options to not panic when hitting the enter button.

I was eager to use the software that came with this book, but since my PC runs on Windows 98, it will not install. They should update the software so it will run on later versions of Windows before they sell the book again, or least ask you what version of Windows you are using before you place the order.

To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.
By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.
Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.
The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

Some of the stand outs: Angel Chicken Pasta is one of their 1000+ reviewed recipes and its included in this book, as well as Iced Pumpkin cookies (yummy!!). I love to cook but have a hard time picking good recipes. I have totally been in love with the All recipes website for over a year now. I'm now in love with their cookbooks. We always rate every recipe in our home on a scale of 1 to 10 and only cook the 10's again. I have more 10's in the allrecipes cookbooks than in any other on my shelf.
My family thinks I'm an incredible cook, but All Recipes makes it so easy. This is the BEST! (Great for brides and grooms getting their start. A good meal on the table will make for a better year or so getting started!)

Intrigued by the title, I began reading this book and found myself laughing out loud with the author's descriptions. Though a good book for anyone with an interest in gardening, with its easy-to-follow instructions, beautiful pictures and recommendations, this is also a 'good read' for those of us who are already gardening addicts. I was glad to find someone else who couldn't pass up an intriguing plant even though we had absolutely no idea where we were going to put it. This is a book for the curious, the experimenter, and those who simply find joy in the garden. I loved the book, have already enjoyed reading the commentary over and over again...and, of course, will look for some of the recommendations I haven't heard of before. This would also make a great gift for any 'budding' gardener!

Written by a professional, licensed, practicing psychologist with a PhD and considerable experience in the field. The author, Dr. Westermeyer, lives in Southern California.
Depression is one of the most devastating mental problems facing our population. Two of my brothers died because of it, through depression induced suicide. It is not uncommon in families, many of whom, like mine, are genetically disposed to bi-polarism (which used to be called 'manic depression.')
We are not talking here about simply 'feeling down' because of some external event, which will go away when the environment changes, but depression. Clinical depression.
I am not so afflicted, but it has impacted me, and I understand how serious it can be. You are not going to talk the afflicted out of it. But there is more than one reason for depression, just as there are multiple clinical approaches to it. It is often addressed today, by licensed, trained professionals like this author, chemically, among other approaches. There are drugs today to uplift the spirits and quell the disease, for it can be the result of disease. It can be a neurosis, or it can be a psychosis.
But, understanding helps, and self-help books, like this one, written by people who know what they are talking about, can be very useful, not only for the depressed person, but for the resource people around them who might aim them at the help they so desperately need. It is important, though, if you have recurrent, serious depression, however, to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

As a beginning gardener, this book has helped me quickly focus in on plants that will work where I live. The pictures are great for identifying neighbors' plants. His descriptions are brief, but more candid (and helpful) than the dry, encyclopedic listings which can be found in other books. Plus his writing is fun to read. I initially borrowed this (and many many many others) from the library. This is one of the few I am buying for ongoing reference.

Not your garden-variety gardening book!.......2007-04-20
I live in the upper Midwest, where the climate is extremely cold, wet, and windy, ( except when it's extremely hot, wet and windy) and the growing season is short. But with the help of this book, I learned how to avoid spending money on plants and garden items that just don't work. That means more money to spend on plants that do work, and more free time to enjoy them.
If you live in the region covered by this book, have a garden, or would like have a garden, you really need this book. If you have been baffled or thwarted by all the gardening books and magazines that seem to make things too complicated, or if you just don't know where to start, you need this book! It lives up to the title, because the plants listed in this book really do grow beautifully in our climate with hardly any effort, once you get them in the ground. There is enough variety to satisfy just about anyone's taste in colors and plant forms, and most of the plants are easy to find in your local nursery.
I loved the author's sense of humor and his wonderful attitude-finally someone with the sense to say what I always wanted to hear. Lazy gardening is good gardening!!

This is the best gardening book I own. Orginally, I borrowed it from my local library for 6 months. I just couldn't take it back-kept renewing it and renewing it. It was indispensable. Finally, I broke down and bought 5 copies - for myself, my mother and all my friends. Mr. Rushing gives great advice for northern gardners, as we are kind of a "special" club. Also, he has a wonderful sense of humour, so the book is enjoyable to read. I still snicker over some of his comments. It is a great gift for ANY "Northern Gardener," novice or expert.
