Part diner, part family-style restaurant, the Famous Dutch Kitchen Restaurant in Frackville, Pennsylvania, north of Lancaster County, serves up some of the best food in this popular tourist area visited by more than five million people each year. Feast on turkey pot pie, ham and cabbage casserole, and delicious vegetables. The cornbread is moist, flavorful, and nearly as sweet as cake. And top it all off with shoofly pie or the Famous Dutch Kitchen's signature Atomic Banana Split.
Pennsylvania Dutch Country is a land of rolling farmlands dotted with one-room schoolhouses where you will encounter horse-drawn buggies, beautiful quilts, and industrious "Plain People."
The Famous Dutch Kitchen Restaurant is the seventh restaurant to be chosen by authors Jane and Michael Stern for their Roadfood cookbook series which celebrates the finest regional restaurants in the United States. It includes an 8-page color insert.

An Very Good Book if You Like Central Pennsylvania Diners.......2004-04-20
This book appears to be the eighth `Roadfood Cookbook' by Jane and Michael Stern who also write a `Roadfood' column for Gourmet magazine. Aside from the fact that this book has just been published, I got a copy to review because I grew up on the same kind of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking described in this book. Thus, I was sure I was doubly qualified to evaluate this volume.
The value of this book to a reader will be directly proportional to the degree to which they really like diner food of eastern Pennsylvania. Like many other local cookbooks, the food is simply not as interesting as you will find in just about any cookbook by a professional culinary journalist such as Patricia Wells; top rated restaurant chef such as Tom Colicchio or Alfred Portale; or TV program host such as Sara Moulton or Tyler Florence.
All the recipes for non-Pennsylvania Dutch specialities are pale imitations of, for example, Italian or New England specialities. The recipes rely very heavily on canned products and the amount of butter used in many of the recipes would make a French chef blanche. Oddly enough, some recipes occasionally use margarine instead of butter for no apparent reason.
One example of a classic recipe done with an inferior recipe is the offering for creamed chipped beef. This book's recipe adds no spices whatsoever. A very good recipe in Craig Claiborne's New York Times cookbook uses a technique that is much more familiar to cooks who are used to making roux and bechamel sauces. It also suggests adding nutmeg, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne.
Another classic with an inferior recipe is the cole slaw recipe. It is just one of a long string of vegetable and vegetable / protein salads where mayonnaise is a major ingredient. James Beard gives a far superior recipe for cole slaw with no mayonnaise. I am entirely familiar with the fact that there are hundreds of variations on cole slaw. I am only indicating that the version offered here is not the best.
All recipe instructions are fairly simple because so many of the dishes are fairly simple, relying on rich ingredients such as butter, mayonnaise, half and half, cream, or canned soups for their punch. The instructions for preparing most vegetables is to `chop' them, where most cookbooks would specify a quarter inch dice or smaller. Some recipes call for grating onions by a food processor. Most other writers would suggest a dice, as the food processor can turn onions into slime.
Most of my comments are really not relevant to true Pennsylvania Dutch specialities, as the book is pretty true to my experience of this style of cooking. The recipes for the famous `Dutch' relishes such as chow-chow are pretty close (although my experience is that the green beans are usually cut, while the authors put them in whole). The recipes for breakfast sticky buns are as good or better than I have seen from similar local sources, but not as good as the Julia Child book on baking.
One really surprising exception to the very ordinary type of recipe to be found here is the pancake recipe. This is one of the very few places where I have seen people take the trouble to separate yolks from whites and whip the whites and fold them into the rest of the batter. I am impressed.
If you want an ethnologic picture of central Pennsylvania diner fare, you cannot find any better source than this book. It is also a reasonably good book of Pennsylvania Dutch recipes, but it leaves out several classics such as stuffed pig stomach and apple dumplings. If you are fond of the authors' series of Roadfood books, you do not want to miss this offering. It's picture of coal region life, as someone who lives on the outskirts of this area should know, is excellent.
If you want a good Pennsylvania Dutch cookbook, I recommend you pass on this book and get a book by Betty Groff, Mary Showalter, or Phyllis Pellman Good.
Recommended with qualifications. I give it four stars rather than three because of its relatively low list price.

The history of the heart of the high-tech world
Mike Malone is a journalist who has covered Silicon Valley for nearly twenty years. This book combines the best of his work from a variety of renowned publications to offer a true-to-life glimpse of the world's most important industrial community. These stories form a picture of a place at the center of cultural, economic, and technological advancement and the people who live there, from dot.com millionaires to everyday working people just trying to get by. Not confined to its present technological significance, the book looks at the rich history of the Valley and the future that awaits it. Meticulously researched and broad in scope, The Valley of Heart's Delight is the definitive biography of a place of massive cultural and political significance.
Michael S. Malone (Palo Alta, CA) joined the San Jose Mercury News in 1980 as the nation's first daily high-tech reporter. His writings on Silicon Valley earned him two Pulitzer Prize nominations. He has also written for the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Dallas Morning News, the Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. He is currently the Editor at Large for ASAP.

If you want to understand Silicon Valley, you'll want to read about it through Mike Malone's eyes. There may be individuals with greater business acumen or longer residential histories, but no one can tell the story about Silicon Valley better than Malone. With incomparable journalistic skills and in depth industry know-how, Malone has assembled a series of stories and columns that chronicle the growth of the Valley and, serendipitously, his own career. Because it is an anthology of sorts, the book does not flow in any singular direction. Nonetheless, the collection is rich with insights on technology breakthroughs, towering personalities and company histories. From high tech "scavengers" to venture capitalists But most important, Malone fills us with strands of individual success and failures, the weave of which is the tapestry known as Silicon Valley. Perhaps the only negative about the volume is that its contents are largely a reprise of earlier Malone writings. If only he'd tell us more....

Interesting, but needs real editing ...........2002-09-16
Having lived in Silicon Valley off and on since 1977 (I came out to join the now-defunct Ahdahl Corp) I found part of this book interesting/enlightening. However, the writing style meanders way too much; I had real trouble keeping my interest up (I kept reading on "one more page..." hoping it would get interesting, but ...
Per the prose extolling the talents/background of the author I'd have expected a much more well written book; it just wandered from paragraph to paragraph and chapter to chapter. Maybe next time ...

Book Description
City girl Jayne Morgan takes a teaching job in the small eastern Oregon town where her fiancee is from. But after he jilts her, she's stuck. Determined to honor her commitments, she begins to get involved in the community and ends up winning an Arab gelding at a local horse show. Harris MacAllister, a local rancher, agrees to board the horse, with some misgivings-Arabs are not cowboy horses, and he's bound to get some teasing for even keeping the animal on his property. As she gets to know Harris better, Jayne finds herself drawn to him, in spite of the hurt caused by her ex-fiance. In the middle of cowboy country, Jayne fights a battle between Western and English...and ends up losing her heart.

First Stories Great!!.......2000-12-18
I really enjoyed the first two stories. The plots were well written and exciting. The last story just didn't fit my personality. I'm not that into elderly couple mystery/romance stories. My favorite was the first story, the book is worth it for that. I like having the recipes at the end. The second story was pretty good but a little far-fetched. I have already commented on the third. God bless all who read this.

Book Description
Before Heart's Delight, I was a boy, he thinks.
Before Heart's Delight, I was a child
When he first saw Ann-Katrin on the bus, he was mesmerized, captivated, consumed.
But that was before.
Now he sits alone in his room, a sixteen-year-old boy, waiting for her to call. Wishing for her to tell him it was real. It was as perfect as he imagined.
But the phone sits silently.
The boy continues to wait, systematically destroying all of the objects from their short-lived relationship. He rips up the bus pass from their first meeting.
The phone is quiet.
He throws the pot of lemon balm she gave him over the edge of the balcony.
No phone call.
He tosses the black Frisbee and the Swiss Army knife over too.
Still the phone stays silent.
As he plays their relationship over in his mind like a movie, he wonders:
What if his heart's delight doesn't call? Will life be worth living then?

Heart's Delight Review.......2006-02-27
A bus pass
A postcard
A German grammar book
A potted plant
A packet of seeds
A page from a songbook
A record
An empty plastic box
A package of condoms
A wadded-up sheet
A frayed American flag
A black notebook
A wrapped package with a curly ribbon
A movie ticket
A razor blade and a bottle of blue pills
What could a sixteen-year-old Swedish boy have to do with all those objects? You'd be surprised.
This book is told by a teenage boy. Is he a boy? He has loved before, but he has yet to get his license or experience the "real world". He goes nameless throughout the entire story, which adds to the constant question of manhood or childhood. And what does a movie ticket and a wrapped package with a curly ribbon have to do with it?
The book starts with him spending a night alone, reviewing the past year in his mind as a movie starring himself and a girl. The girl. Like most teenage boys, he has fallen in love. She, however, was not in love.
The novel focuses on this boy and the objects that still connect him to his past lover. He feels a burning desire to rid himself of those memories. What to do with the bus pass? The record? The sheet?
This book will keep you up at night. You'll be wide awake at 3 a.m., gnawing at your fingernails. Why did he have to destroy the that? Why did he need to get rid of it? Every obstacle this boy goes through will have an impact on your entire day. Why? Why won't he listen? Why won't he move?! WAKE UP!

Great book.......2005-12-02
This is one book that I could read over and over. I read Heart's Delight in one day, and loved it so much. This is actually a book that was translated from sweedish, into English.
The main character in this book is about 17, and is heartbroken by his true love, for which he calls "Heart's Delight". A mysterious redhead, who he sees every week on the city bus to school. Eventually, they get to know eachother, and fall in love. Later, the book talks about teenage sex, and how beautiful it was for him the first time, with heart's delight.
It's later in the book that you find out what happens, which drives the boy to commit suicide. The only one who can save his life is Heart's Delight, also known as Ann-Katrin.
This book is writen beautifuly, you should definently read it.
Beautiful, Meaningful book, nto your usual teen love story.......2005-04-21
By far, the best book ive ever read. Not your usual sappy teen love story where girl meets guy and they end up happily ever after, or the typical drama of a teen couple having sex and getting pregnant. this novel is unique and lovely, beautiful ,yet sad love story, it will make you cry. i especially reccomend it to all you girls who think that boys have no emotions. wonderful story, anyone who has a true love, or has had a true love and lost it, should read thsi book. Nilson writes beautifully without being overabundant with words, he used the right amount and the right words, great writing style, has even inspired me to begin writing.
Heart's Delight -- I'm Not Creative.......2004-04-21
Heart's delight is the name of a plant. It's also called Lemon Balm, and it gives off a faint hint of-- you guessed it-- lemon. It is also the nickname the young man in this book gives to the girl who he thinks is the love of his life. Ever since the young man first saw her he has been in love, but now he only wants to get her out of his mind. To do this, however, he must first destroy every bit of her she has left in his life.
"Heart's Delight" is a story about love and falling out of love. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to feel really sad. This is not the sort of book that will leave you satisfied with the world.

Good plot but doesn't have many sparkles.......2002-12-08
Courtesy of A Romance Review
His Heart's Delight is the first book of the Braedons family, featuring Christy and Morgan's story. Christy is a little country girl without much experience in life. She always seeks advice from her elder sister, Joanna. Morgan is a charming bachelor with a sense of humor. He finds Christy' s laugh most attractive, so he always makes her laughs. He is also a perfect gentleman, although he wants to seduce Christy badly, he still controls himself. Ms. Blaney's first regency in the series has a good plot but it doesn't have many sparkles.
ending subpar.......2002-09-07
Tregatt pretty much sums up the plot well. I will just add that while the book was, at times, entertaining, there were issues. What exactly do they all look like? I know exactly what Christy's sister, Joanna, looks like as well as her intended. Physical descriptions were too vague for me. Christy also had a never ending supply of giggles. Was that supposed to make her appear more interesing or fun loving? It was rather boring and made her appear flighty and younger than her 17 years. But the biggest disappointment is the ending. Lord Morgan Braedon declares his love but Christy, after a moment, also declares her love, but the story does not end with them planning a wedding but rather Morgan declaring that "I am going to wait until you are ready to accept the future but I am going to be impatient". What? While, as readers, we can assume they will get together, leaving it unspoken is really cheating the reader. The reader had to wade through 250 pages to an incomplete ending. Not well done.
an engaging read.......2002-01-05
"His Heart's Delight" by Mary Blayney is the first book in a projected series that features the romantic ups and downs of the Braedon family. And the hero of this first book in the series is Morgan Braedon, the younger son of a marquis (a rather dark and dour individual who has managed to not only keep his entire family at arm's length but to also maim them emotionally as well). The novel opens with Morgan being told that he has to find a wife by the Season's end, or else lose all financial support from his father. And since Morgan is a man of very little money, and who makes his way as a gambler, such a threat would definitely make his life more difficult than it already is. So Morgan comes up with a plan to find a young woman who would be willing to enter into a sham courtship with him. And this is where Miss Christina Lambert comes into the picture.
Christina is in London to make her debut into London society along with her elder (and more quiet by nature) sister. However Christina, a rather bubbly and flirtatious young lady, is no ordinary young debutante: she is actually engaged to her childhood sweetheart, Richard Wilton, who is currently serving with Wellington's forces in the Peninsula. Christina's parents however want to keep the engagement secret for the time being, and will only agree to making this engagement official after Christina has had her Season. Christina's dilemma then is how to enjoy a Season, to dance and flirt, without raising the hopes of any eligible bachelors. An innocent dance with Morgan leads to a whole slew of gossip, but which allows both parties to realise that they can each help the other achieve their means: Morgan will have his sham courtship, and Christina will have a male escort who has no expectations that she will reciprocate his feelings. However the more time the couple spends with each other, the more they both come to the private conclusion that they were meant for each other. But what of the complication that comes in the shape of Richard Wilton?
The test of a really well written book in my opinion is if the characters and plot engage the reader whether or not you take to the primary characters. And I was definitely engrossed with the on-goings in this novel. In spite of the fact that Christina Lambert is not really the type of heroine that I usually take to -- she's a little too flirty, stubborn and supremely sure of herself for my taste -- I found myself becoming totally involved in the quandary she found herself in, and rooting for to make the right decision. (In fact, I wouldn't at all mind reading a novel featuring a much, much older Christina, to see if she's still the same stubborn, supremely-sure-that-her-opinions-and- notions-are-the-right-ones woman, and how her children deal with this managing aspect of her character!) Mary Blayney did a wonderful job of depicting Christina's confusion over her conflicting feelings for Richard and Morgan. And while Morgan Breadeon belonged to the tortured hero club that we're all vastly familiar with, I thought that Blayney did a wonderful job of depicting the dilemma he faced when he realises that Christina was exactly the kind of young lady he would want to spend his life with. Blayney also did a wonderful of bringing to life the secondary characters in this novel and making us care for them -- Christina's elder sister, Joanna, for example. I also enjoyed the interaction between the sisters, which allowed us to see not only the deep and affectionate bond between them but also allows us to better understand their characters, and which makes this novel a more substantial read as well more richly textured. Another aspect of this novel that I really liked was the pacing. Blayney does a really good job here -- nothing was rushed, and events unfolded and came to the right conclusion at exactly the right rate.
All in all, "His Heart's Delight" is quite the enjoyable read -- entertaining and engrossing, and one that I would have no trouble recommending.
Customer Reviews:
If you like this sort of thing.......2005-05-06
this is the sort of thing you'll like.
Back in the 1200s or so, a curious book was written
about sexual mores and manners in cosmopolitan,
urbane Muslim society. Much MUCH later, it was
translated into French. Somewhat later, the
French version was translated into English. This
accounts for occasional awkwardnesses, but overall
this is quite readable.
As Gay Sunshine Press is known for books of gay/lesbian
interest (duh), this book has been edited to emphasize
the sections of interest to that reading population.
To be frank, most of this is of limited general interest;
a recitation of jokes and snapqueen insults traded by
people who lived almost a thousand years ago is of
necessity a minority taste. The very idea that a
given society had a recognized homosexual subculture
that long ago is a big part of this book's appeal.
There are a number of anecdotes and stories that
give one a fair impression of this subculture.
All in all, I'm glad I have this book.
Arabian knights.......2003-11-01
The book is full of amusing anecdotes and gives us a great view of medieval Arab homosexuality.

Book Description
Irish immigrant Molly O'Brien has earned quite a reputation in Delight, Wisconsin. Raising four orphans all on her own certainly hasn't helped. Nor has the fact that she's just taken in two strangers with serious gunshot wounds, planning to nurse them back to health. There's just one problem. One of the men is an outlaw and the other's a federal marshal-and if she doesn't figure out which is which, she could find herself in a far more compromising position than she could have imagined.
Customer Reviews:
Ruth Ryan Langan tells a compelling story in HEART'S DELIGHT........2007-08-03
At twenty-nine years of age, Molly O'Brien has earned quite a reputation for her unorthodox decision to raise four orphans alone. Between working her farm and raising her girls, there's no time for a man or romance in her life - a fact which she's never regretted.
U.S. Marshall Hodge Egan has decided that it's about time for him to retire. At thirty-six years of age he's ready to leave Illinois and live the `good life' in California - gambling, drinking good whiskey and enjoying pretty women. A bank robbery in Wisconsin sets him on a path that will forever change his life.
Molly and the girls are returning from one of their rare trips to town. The girls lament not being able to spend more time in town and are already looking forward to the next time they'll be able to make the trip. When they come across two bloody bodies, both men are still alive - barely. Molly decides to take the men home and nurse them back to health. The girls aren't enthusiastic about the prospect of caring for the men until Molly mentions that if they die they'd take the bodies back to town. Flora even goes so far as to hope for the mens deaths. Neither of them dies - which disappoints the girls - but it's the knowledge that one of the men is an outlaw and the other is a lawman that has them baffled. Neither man was wearing anything that could positively identify them. Molly discovers information about both men in their possessions she finds near where she found the men - but there's no way of knowing which items belong to which man
Molly is determined to not trust either man until she can figure out which one is the lawman. She's hidden both mens clothes and weapons which truly annoys Hodge - after all, how can he protect Molly and the girls from Eli Otto if he's naked? Hodge is grateful to Molly for saving his life, despite the fact that she still believes he may be the outlaw. What will it take to convince her that he represents the law? What will happen when Molly's and Hodge's protective instincts collide and they discover a mutual passion that won't be denied?
Ruth Ryan Langan tells a compelling story in HEART'S DELIGHT. At a time when women were expected to marry, Molly opts to blaze her own trail and raise orphaned children alone. She's a wonderfully warmhearted woman who readers are going to love. I loved the confusion over the men's identities and how Molly and the girls react to both of the men. Hodge is cocky enough that you can't help but love him, especially when he goes out of his way to antagonize Molly which leads to some pretty comical situations. Eli Otto is the perfect bad guy! You'll just love to hate him! The girls are all very different from one another and as a reader I truly enjoyed getting to know each of them. I've never read any of Ms. Langan's books before but I'll definitely be checking for more of her writing in the future.
