Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Good for Option Traders.......2007-10-16

If you are new to option trading, this is a very good book. It explains all the different kinds of strategies and when to use them. Excellent book for an option trader to have in their library as a reference book.

5 out of 5 stars This is a heavy duty options book but..........2007-10-08

This is a heavy duty options book but don't let this scare you off. The only prerequisite I would say you need is some basic options understanding/experience and you also need to be interested in learning more about options strategies. When I first got this book I thought "Wow! This reminds me of some of my economics text books from college." But I soon found this book to be well organized and chocked full of great information and far more interesting than any college text book.

I have to warn people that this is not a book to teach you the fundamentals of options trading. You need to have learned the basics already.

I won't go into all the details of what this book covers since many other posts have done that. But I do want to say I really like this book. It has now taken up permanent residence on my desk because I use it so much.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the bible of all bibles!.......2007-09-30

I really enjoyed this book and continue to do so. As others have commented, it's not a cover-to-cover type of book, but I can reference any strategy so easily and get the salient information I need at the flick of a page.

I've also got the author's other book (Options Made Easy) and there's something different about the way he explains the subject of options that I previously found much more difficult and now find remarkably easy. Great book.

3 out of 5 stars Great reference, full of errors.......2007-09-15

This book is an excellent reference book for options traders, novice and experts. It describes in great detail most of the strategies for trading options. I like the structure and the organization of the book. It helps easily locate a stragety based on several criteria, like your trading expertice or your perception of where the underlying stock is going.

I'm dissapointed at the amount of errors in the book. I've only read 2 chapters so far and have found, not only mispelled words, but errors related to the description of the strategy, risk and reward calculations and inverted names (call instead of put, for example).

If not for the errors, I would have given 5 stars to the book.

5 out of 5 stars Technical Alanlysis "Bible".......2007-09-11

A large volume that covers just about anything you want to know about charting. I was most interested in Elliott Wave info and it has a good section about EW. For the options trader, this is the book to study.

Book Description

The book spares no one. Politicians, sports stars, celebrities, corporations, publishers, crossing guards––all fair game. If you are a scumbag or just somebody who they find annoying there is a fair chance you will be on the list.

Politics has long been a passion for Jackie Mason and he is well known for his tough and outspoken position on many issues. He is not one to sidestep an issue no matter how sticky. Together with his friend and collaborator, the well–known divorce attorney Raoul Lionel Felder, he has hosted a weekly PBS talk television series "Crossing The Line" and a BBC radio show "The Mason–Felder Report", and currently he has a weekly talk show on the Comcast Network.

1 out of 5 stars Cheap Awful Jokes and simply stupid.......2007-10-07

I guess I thought it would give me a laugh or two based on some of highlighted phases, "Jews for Jesus" etc. However, it was yet another comedian trying to join the Lewis Black, Daily Show or Bill Maher bandwagon of political humor. Too bad this comedian is not as funny nor has diverse content.
After the first few pages the book simply turns into a complaining/vent session of everything which the authors deeply disagrees with - let me summarize:
Any Jew who is against Israel
Any political organization against Israel politics
Any person who remotely supports the Holocaust
Any non-Conservative
and silly jokes to those in media which require teasing (ie. Al Sharpton, Michael Moore, Jesse Jackson, Britney, etc.)

There are many other comedian with similar content and jokes but they are really funny whereas this book just takes a small segment of its victim and highlights it as their basis for existence.

Save yourself money and time. If you want something funny watch a truly funny comedian. Allow Jackie to perform on Broadway and advise him to keep the stand-up act going but stay away from the typewriter.

1 out of 5 stars Useful in only one regard.......2007-09-26

Perhaps I'm just getting too old... I can vaguely remember back in the early days of television when some of what Jackie Mason said was actually funny.

But the only way this book could been any worse would have been if Alan Derschowitz had done the editing and Ann Coulter's face had been on the cover. (Although, to be fair, Neither Mr. Mason nor Mr. Felder is very much less unappealing to behold than Ms. Coulter)

Still, this book did add something to my store of knowledge. Based upon the definitions given in the introduction, I can now state with some authority that:

1. Anyone who either buys a book written by a faded borscht belt comedian and a celebrity divorce lawyer for more than 39 cents on a remainders table OR takes seriously anything contained in said book - is a schmuck.

2. Anyone who actually writes such a book as this one AND puts his own name on it - is a putz.

2 out of 5 stars okay read.......2007-08-24

It is an okay read, but I won't recommand buying it. Borrow it from the library or something.

2 out of 5 stars The incessant whine of the privileged has never been so shrill.......2007-07-12

Imagine if you will that you are at a dinner. Your host is a rather amusing Republican; and he may have been a liberal in his youth, but that only makes his current political stance all that more forceful. He begins with a few light jokes, some witty repartee and then drags you into a longwinded and ultimately self-righteous sermon about everything that is wrong with America. Now imagine that he's Jewish or at least knows enough Yiddish to fake it. That's the essence of this book.

As with Goldberg's 39 People Screwing Up America, this is one of those books from the Republican Shriek Factory. Forget about Bush committing us to a fruitless war and practically legitimizing torture. Forget about the blank check that Bush got from a Republican Congress to keep this war going. Hell forget about Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, FEMA or Ken Lay from Enron. No, in this world, the worst human being is Al Gore (who is lying - so sayeth the ancient Jewish comedians without humor) and Al Sharpton. Oh and of course we can't have a book like this without slamming on Barbara Streisand.

Even Goldberg threw in a few personalities that we could all agree on - like Barbara Walters dumbing down the news.

But this book is just a combination of smug and defensive from beginning to end. And even better, it's new but it reads like an old NY Post article. These guys still think that Bill Clinton's sex scandal is more odious than Bush's war. Only no one died in that sex scandal and at this point I thought no one cared. ANd Bill Maher? Yep, he said that the 9/11 terrorists weren't cowardly. The factg that bravery and cowardice have really nothing to do with their actions is second nature. Nope, you have to call your enemies cowardly. The words "evil" or "vicious" are only accurate; so why bother with them?

This is a book that was old before its time. Had it been published in the early part of the decade when Bush could do no wrong and his willing cheerleaders sang his praises, it might have been a hit; especially among those who think that throwing in a Yiddish word or two is the height of comedy (ie. goyim). Now it's just sad.

3 out of 5 stars Milding Amusing At Best.......2007-06-09

Lighthearted approach to some heavyweight topics. It's a very quick read about dozens of people, places, organizations, countries, governments that don't measure up to he way Mason and Felder's look at the world and the way it oughta' be. Mason does comedy standup about world events, so maybe he's qualified in his contributions to the written slam fest. -But who's this Raoul Felder? -A "celebrity divorce lawyer," reads the book jacket. One might ask: "What's his world-view expertise?"

In any event, the book's stacked with truly cutting opinions and soft-touch humor about personalities from Barbra Streisand, Barry Bonds, Bill Clinton, Ray Nagin, and even Pablo Picasso...to entities like the NCAA, Afghanistan, the French, and the New York Times. Plus criticisms about automatic toilets and sinks? True, this topic has not been overlooked. The casual funniness balances the biting lampooning in ways that only Mason can effect...without venom or hate. You can sort of tell which parts were Mason's and which were Felders.

Regularly, they parlay a compelling "Jewish" flavor to the work by including references to Jewish events or people or words. The authors often pepper in terms like feh, meshpucha, yenta, et. al. I don't exactly know the meaning of these words; but somehow, they worked for this reader. Ah, but, then, too, the title of the book is "Schmucks!" What should we expect? Is it light Jewish humor packaged for Gentiles. [The copyright for this book is by Krapatakin? Might there be some kind of hidden humor here only the writers would know about... (!?)]

Mason and Felder confront the notion that "...just because a person is absolutely first-class in one field does not mean [he/] she should be respected in another," the point of a couple of pages on Susan Sarandon. Maybe this says it all, as "Schmucks!" is all over the board, definitely overly-political [however lite] in its scope, and is only marginally amusing. It's Not at all "material that will leave you crying with laughter," as the dust cover promises; but it is interesting, with a lot of "yeah, I agree with that" reader reaction.

Book Description

Timothy Carrier, having a beer after work at his friend’s tavern, enjoys drawing eccentric customers into amusing conversations. But the jittery man who sits next to him tonight has mistaken Tim for someone very different—and passes to him a manila envelope full of cash.

“Ten thousand now. You get the rest when she’s gone.”

The stranger walks out, leaving a photo of the pretty woman marked for death, and her address. But things are about to get worse. In minutes another stranger sits next to Tim. This one is a cold-blooded killer who believes Tim is the man who has hired him.

Thinking fast, Tim says, “I’ve had a change of heart. You get ten thousand—for doing nothing. Call it a no-kill fee.” He keeps the photo and gives the money to the hired killer. And when Tim secretly follows the man out of the tavern, he gets a further shock: the hired killer is a cop.

Suddenly, Tim Carrier, an ordinary guy, is at the center of a mystery of extraordinary proportions, the one man who can save an innocent life and stop a killer far more powerful than any cop…and as relentless as evil incarnate. But first Tim must discover within himself the capacity for selflessness, endurance, and courage that can turn even an ordinary man into a hero, inner resources that will transform his idea of who he is and what it takes to be The Good Guy.

Go and buy Detained Differences by J. Robert Rowe, he is someone who finally out does Dean! You will love that novel! But yes this is a good one, but J. Robert Rowe's is much better!

5 out of 5 stars Well done, non-supernatural storytelling in line with "Intensity".......2007-10-15

Koontz has done quite well with the sub-genre of "crazed bad guy relentlessly pursues plucky victim," all the way from Shattered through Intensity to this book, The Good Guy. It seems to me, as a reader of several of his books, that he is more creative and realistic in this sub-genre than in his supernatural mode.

Of course Koontz gives us his trademark characters: the good guy -- a mason with an obscure past; the bad guy -- an environmentally-friendly contract killer; and the damsel in distress -- an author who hasn't succumbed to anomie and bitterness, despite her best efforts. And of course, the motor that makes the book run morally is the endlessly fascinating retelling of the battle of good vs. evil.

Koontz almost veers into contradiction on the matter of evil. On the one hand, his writing in recent years has consistently indulged in evil as a part of some conspiracy theory, even to the point, in False Memory, of having a conspiracy to bite off a president's nose. On the other hand, however, he takes the position that there is no ultimate cause of a person's evil. "But there is no why" Tim Carrier, the protagonist in The Good Guy says at one point, "Just--evil is" (p 299). So is evil a side-effect of a subterranean struggle for power, or is it something that just exists and must be dealt with? I imagine Koontz would probably say both.

Koontz has a lot of anger at modern society and modern politics that seeps into his writing, and has had for years. Regarding modern society, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more forceful indictment of modern living in general, and life in the L.A. Basin in particular, than Winter Moon. As for ranting about modern politics, The Good Guy sure has its moments. Having a woman unsuccessfully plead for her life based on being against the war (pp 227-228) is heavy-handed indeed. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but heavy-handed nonetheless. I would love to know what Koontz was thinking when he wrote the passage. Maybe the same thing I thought when I read it: being against violence will not save you from it, no matter how hard you try. Definitely a lesson for, and from, the GWOT. But maybe I'm just a warmonger by reading that into the passage. Anyway, great book, great action, great characters. Thanks Dean!

5 out of 5 stars The GOOD GUY.......2007-10-08

Every time I read Dean Koontz, It is like, I think that 'this book here is his best'. But, I know that it just is not possible. Every book I have read of his, I just totally love. This novel is so believable. Well, he has a nak of making people believe that it is. He uses real every day people in his stories. And, it makes you think, 'what if?!' I mean, his characters are like so real. A masonry man is sitting in a bar. A guy comes in. Makes idle conversation. Then, hands him $10,000.00 cash in an envelope. With a picture of a woman. He says, something like, 'You will get the rest when she is gone.' Whoa! Can you just imagine if something like that really happened. I will not tell any more. I do not want to give anything away. I love the way he begins his novels. And this one is great. I am sure you will like it as much as I did!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Koontz; I love Koontz.......2007-10-08

I love Koontz, and have read everything that he has written (that has been available since the 70's). There are other earlier books, but they're not available. My favorite will always be "Shadowfires", an early book written under a pseudonym. His last book, "The Husband" was an excellent suspense book with a disappointing ending. "The Good Guy" is almost as good, loads of suspense, and another crazy bad guy (not as good as the bad guy in "The Face"; he was the best), but almost as delusional. I liked all the characters; Tim Carrier indeed had reasons for being a Good Guy, and the resolve was somewhat satisfying. I'm especially glad that Mr. Koontz isn't dragging his books out, ad nauseum, like "Corner of His Eye" or those others, because they could've been 200 pages shorter. "The Good Guy" was enjoyable. Koontz doesn't need supernatural stuff or government conspiricies to be interesting. When he has good and interesting characters, as he does here, he can hold interest. Indeed, I was held from the first page. I never understood "Cold Fire". Could someone explain to me why it's so great? I think it's his only bad book; well, "Dragon Fire" is a close second...

1 out of 5 stars From a fan of Koontz, this is not 'Good' at all.......2007-10-06

Almost every Koontz book that you pick up will have a few saving graces. Primarily for myself, I enjoy the first half of just about every one of his books. I have been thinking for a while that it would be nice to take his stories, rip out the last half of all of them, and end up with a collection of entertaining 'Twilight Zone' style stories. The reason I say this is because Koontz really knows how to start a story in a manner that grabs the reader and brings them into a world that is startlingly fresh and interesting concept wise. However he always, and I mean always wraps his stories up in exactly the same fashion. His bad guy is foiled by the good guy who gets the girl that he probably has found during whatever book it is you picked up.

With that aside, the reason 'The Good Guy' rates a whole lot lower on my Koontz scale than most of his stories is that this time he pretty much races into what is normally the middle of most of his novels. The plot races towards Koontz usual cat and mouse play within the first twenty or so pages and you miss out on the enjoyable build up. So what you are left with is a long drawn out chase scene and a mushy ending.

I suppose that most of you will not agree with me. Alas, I wish that this were a better book. The writing is at times perhaps the very most contrived that I have ever come across in Koontz's books. for example...

"Is there something I should know? Have you been in trouble sometime?"

She blinked "Not me. Im as straight as a new nail that never met a hammer."

"Why does that sound to me like there was a hammer, maybe a lot of hammers, but you didn't bend?"

"I dont know. I dont know why it sounds that way to you. Maybe you're always inferring hidden meaning when none is implied."

"Im just a bricklayer."

Ah... at times it is painfully bad. I wish Koontz would write a true 'horror' book and not have the quality of his writing end up creating most of the terror.

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers.

The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of the start.......2007-10-06

This book is great for getting anything started. Very easy to read and to the point. Anyone can use this book to start anything. Details to look for. I also liked that I could read the first chapter on line before purchasing it.

4 out of 5 stars Great check-list for anyone starting a company........2007-09-07

A great checklist and lots of advice for anyone thinking of starting a company.

Nothing revolutionary, perhaps nothing you wouldn't have thought of yourself, but there is great value in having a well thought-out, complete, list like this.

Only 4 stars because the book seems biased towards venture-funded companies.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Living.......2007-08-30

Written like he was delivering a speech, Guy Kawasaki has made this an enjoyable and interesting read. All the time I was turning the pages, I kept feeling that much of what he wrote applied to life, and not just starting a business. When I got to the final chapter, "The Art of Being a Mensch", I discovered why I had gotten that feeling - much of Kawasaki's business approach emanates from his way of being in life. Read it for thoughts on how to live; read it for its humor, read it for advice - but do read it! Dennis DeWilde, Author of The Performance Connection.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for starting anything important in life........2007-08-23

This book was so easy to read, and just made sense. If you looking to start anything in life that you have not done before, read this book, it will help a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Great Start.......2007-08-11

If you are planning to start up, don't think again. Just read this book, close your eyes, and..... jump. This one is just as good as Eightstorm: 8-Step Brainstorming for Innovative Managers.

Book Description

Finally—A Pregnancy Book That Won't Put Men to Sleep
My Boys Can Swim! tells real men everything they really want to know about pregnancy, such as: How much is it going to cost? Why does your wife primp before seeing her doctor when she hasn't put a stitch of make-up on for you in months? And, most important, what's it going to do to your sex life?
This rollicking, laugh-out-loud book is for expectant dads in search of bottom-line pregnancy information, without all that boring touchy-feely stuff you find in those books written for women. Inside you'll discover helpful—and hilarious—information and insights on such topics as:
The Maternity Wardrobe: "A key part of the maternity wardrobe is maternity underwear—parachute-like undies big enough to fit an NFL defensive lineman."
Baby Names: "Don't give your kids mockable names like Thaddeus, which is Greek for 'I'm a dork and should be beaten up.'"
The Birth: "No one told me it's normal that babies' heads can be misshapen at birth. I was convinced that my wife gave birth to Veldar, the conehead."

4 out of 5 stars Perfect book for dads-to-be.......2007-09-24

My husband used to read books all the time. But now only has time for things about the length of a newspaper or magazine article. This book is really short and funny. So it keeps his attention enough to actually be informed as to what is going on. He reads a little at a time while things progress. And has laughed out-loud on a couple of occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for new dads!.......2007-09-18

My husband LOVED this book. It's written from a husband's point of view which is hilarious. While it doesn't provide tons of medical info, it gives just enough for my husband to understand some of what I'm going through. Each night he read some of it outloud so we could both enjoy it. The humor in the book was great and it has helped him realize that neither of us is going crazy...all of this is normal. I definitely recommend this book to any dad. They will certainly enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the father to be.......2007-09-16

My husband enjoyed this book and learning about what to expect. The humor in it is great and the topics are right on target in each trimester. My husband kept telling me what he learned from the book.

1 out of 5 stars For dumb dads.......2007-09-13

This was a totally dumbed down book. My husband actually likes being a father and was insulted by this book. This is for a dad who likes to sit on the couch, drink beers, and not do stuff with his kids. Sorry book.

1 out of 5 stars yeah...whatever.......2007-08-23

The author tries to have that cute "Dave Barry" thing but instead just plays on old stereotypes that all guys do is watch football and don't know thing about women's bodies or what happens with a pregnancy. My wife and I are expecting our first child and I was thinking this may be informative. Instead it was a quick, one day read with jokes that wouldn't even be funny enough for Mad Magazine on a bad day. Sorry, but this one wasn't for me and felt like a waste of money.

Book Description

For ages women have come together over coffee, cocktails, or late-night phone chats to analyze the puzzling behavior of men.

He's afraid to get hurt again.

Maybe he doesn't want to ruin the friendship.

Maybe he's intimidated by me.

He just got out of a relationship.

Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo are here to say that -- despite good intentions -- you're wasting your time. Men are not complicated, although they'd like you to think they are. And there are no mixed messages.

The truth may be He's just not that into you.

Unfortunately, guys are too terrified to ever directly tell a woman "You're not the one." But their actions absolutely show how they feel.

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU -- based on a popular episode of Sex and the City -- educates otherwise smart women on how to tell when a guy just doesn't like them enough, so they can stop wasting time making excuses for a dead-end relationship.

Reexamining familiar scenarios and classic mind-sets that keep us in unsatisfying relationships, Behrendt and Tuccillo's wise and wry understanding of the sexes spares women hours of waiting by the phone, obsessing over the details with sympathetic girlfriends, and hoping his mixed messages really mean "I'm in love with you and want to be with you."

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU is provocative, hilarious, and, above all, intoxicatingly liberating. It deserves a place on every woman's night table. It knows you're a beautiful, smart, funny woman who deserves better. The next time you feel the need to start "figuring him out," consider the glorious thought that maybe He's just not that into you. And then set yourself loose to go find the one who is.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-10-11

This book really makes you think about what you've done in relationships. I saw myself in many of the stories! It is just SO true. I'm on my second read to get it set in! I recommend this to anyone just out of a relationship or having doubts about anything.

4 out of 5 stars I should have written this book!.......2007-10-07

Many years ago the term was "GU (geographically undesireable)". I always said that if you lived 500 miles away and a man was into you, he'd make the trip and if you lived next door and he wasn't into you, it'd be too far to go. I never bought or read this book as I thought the male author was just pompous and sarcastic about women. But, read it in a waiting room and got to laugh out loud and enjoyed the style and bluntness of the responses (even if the letters were made up). I have always wondered why women can be intelligent, attractive, interesting and interested but, when a man walks into her life (or into the room or into view of her), she becomes willing to settle for whatever crumbs he throws her way. Even in a work environment, women support men over women! Wake up ladies, they don't give up their friends or lives for us. Why do we feel we must? (No, not ALL of us, but damn near all!).

5 out of 5 stars Ladies, heed Greg & Liz's advice!.......2007-09-29

This audio book is pure genious! It's straight-shooting, blunt, and full of "tough love" which hopefully will knock some sense into those of us who hang on to guys way too long hoping things will "get better". It's an easy listen, because you know it speaks to you. You will truly feel that Greg & Liz are your caring friends or siblings when you listen to their advice. I only wish Greg's live comedy show incorporated some of the material in the book, rather than the endless vulgarity he seems to think is necessary to be funny in a live performance. Stick to writing books, Greg! That's where your true talent is...

5 out of 5 stars Ouch! But True!.......2007-09-19

What I like most about this book is that it doesn't allow any wiggle room for excuses. (My excuses *love* wiggle room.) The truth isn't always fuzzy but it certainly sets me free.

It's freeing for me to know that I'm strong enough to deal with the truth. Because life goes on - fabulously well - whether or not he calls. I think this book makes women stronger. No more skirting the issues. Walk tall. Besides we look a lot more attractive that way!

2 out of 5 stars Marginal, obvious advice for women in denial........2007-09-08

It's hard to believe there is a market for this book. I considered it so bad I wasn't even going to drag it over the public library and donate it. I was ready to pitch this book into the garbage after only half an hour of reading, but I struggled on over several weeks, reading little bits at a time thinking perhaps I just wasn't appreciating the book's attempts at New York humor.
The marginal advice filling it still doesn't seem worth the effort of carrying the book two blocks to the library. Its success must be a symptom of how confusing the role of the modern, liberated feminist in America has become? I suppose the book is based on the folklore that "love blinds." How else could perfectly sensible women be so confused as to not see the obvious? This is a book for women who are blind, in denial, desperate, confused, dumb, from Venus, totally inexperienced, spending too much time in psychoanalysis, spending too much time rationalizing everything some guy they think they want to marry says or does to the point of reaching a hopeful conclusion when all the facts say the opposite.
Save your money. The "Dear Abby, Annie, Beth, etc." columns in most newspapers provide much better advice than this lightweight tome that was probably only quickly written to separate a lot of very confused and naive women from their hard-earned money. Don't over-analyze men. Like politicians don't pay any attention to what they say unless it happens to match how they act. Men are pretty uncomplicated as a group. Women who spend hours dissecting them over lunch with their girlfriends can't even be certain the people providing them support don't have a different agenda as far as their success in love is concerned. If you want to know more about men, talk to your mother and lots and lots of men friends who aren't just interested in getting into your panties and then with their curiosity satisfied, are ready to move on to the next challenge. Male co-workers or acquaintances are much better sources of advice than this book.
This volume really wasn't worth this much time to review, but since so many readers seemed to think it contains "Insights from Heaven" I think they've got their directions confused. At best the information provided is so obvious that a child should be able to recognize it. Much of the more complicated advice is bull, or seems like it might have come from a laughing, horned and hoofed creature residing in a place far away from Heaven and hotter than the planet Venus.

Built from Scratch is about two businessmen who achieve the American Dream by fundamentally changing the realm of home-improvement retailing. Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, cofounders of the Home Depot, explain how they established the first national chain in the industry by concentrating on low prices, customer service, and strong leadership values.

Ultimately, this is a book about grit and determination. "Building the Home Depot was a tough, uphill battle from the day we started," they write. "No one believed we could do it and very few people trusted our judgment." The two cofounders launched the company only after they were fired by a California hardware retailer because of politics. The Home Depot lost $1 million in its first year of operation in Atlanta. Today it's one of the great successes on Wall Street, with more than 700 stores across the country and 160,000 employees.

One reason the book is so engaging is that it includes corporate anecdotes. A favorite: the company banned wild parties after several employees were demoted and a couple were fired in the wake of a drunken annual managers' meeting. Another yarn involves Sears, which made one of the worst financial mistakes in retailing history when it passed on a deal to purchase Home Depot in the early 1980s. The authors are self-serving at times; for example, they whine too much about paying $104.5 million to dispose of a sex-discrimination lawsuit. But there's no denying the smashing performance of Big Orange. Marcus and Blank paint a story with some sparkling advice for practically anyone in business. --Dan Ring

Book Description

One of the greatest entrepreneurial success stories of the past twenty years

When a friend told Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank that "you've just been hit in the ass by a golden horseshoe," they thought he was crazy. After all, both had just been fired. What the friend, Ken Langone, meant was that they now had the opportunity to create the kind of wide-open warehouse store that would help spark a consumer revolution through low prices, excellent customer service, and wide availability of products.

Built from Scratch is the story of how two incredibly determined and creative people--and their associates--built a business from nothing to 761 stores and $30 billion in sales in a mere twenty years.

Built from Scratch tells many colorful stories associated with The Home Depot's founding and meteoric rise; shows that a company can be a tough, growth-oriented competitor and still maintain a high sense of responsibility to the community; and provides great lessons useful to people in any business, from start-ups to the Fortune 500.

Great Stories

"Ming the Merciless": The inside account of the man who fired Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus
"My people don't drive Cadillacs!" How Ross Perot almost got involved with The Home Depot
"Take this job and shove it!" The banker who put his career on the line to get The Home Depot the loan that enabled it to survive
"Folks, I tell ya, if these Atlanta stores were any bigger, we'd be paying Alabama sales tax." Home Depot's first good ol' southern advertising campaign

A Company with a Conscience

When disasters like the Oklahoma City bombing or Hurricane Andrew happen, Home Depot associates don't ask for permission to respond. They react from their hearts--whether that means keeping their store open all night or being on the scene with volunteers and relief supplies.
The Home Depot doesn't just contribute money to organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April, but also provides its people to help lead and grow these community efforts.

Great Lessons

Know your customer: In The Home Depot's case, customers don't pay for wider aisles and a pretty store, but for a wide assortment and low prices
Why everyday low prices mean more sales overall: The marketing philosophy The Home Depot learned from talking with Sam Walton
Market leadership: Why The Home Depot never goes to a major new market with plans to open just a few stores
The strategy for profitable growth: How The Home Depot redefined its U.S. market from its $135  billion traditional "do-it-yourself" base to a much larger pond of $365 billion
How to change the rules of the game: How The Home Depot bypassed almost all middlemen, allowing it to pass on huge savings to customers

Built from Scratch is the firsthand account of how two regular guys created one of the greatest entrepreneurial successes of the last twenty years.

Opening the First Store

"What the hell happened? Who screwed up the store? . . . Whatever time remained before the doors were scheduled to open for the first time, we sped around in forklifts, stomping on the brakes, scuffing up the flooring so it would once more look like a warehouse."

Customer Service

"If ever I saw an associate point a customer toward what they needed three aisles over, I would threaten to bite their finger. I would say, 'Don't ever let me see you point. You take the customer by the hand, and you bring them right where they need to be and you help them.'"

Giving Back

"When The Home Depot went public we realized that we had the financial capacity and wherewithal to give back to the communities where we did business. There is a concept in Judaism called tzedaka, which means 'to give back.' It is considered a mitzvah, a good deed, to give to someone who doesn't have, and we believe strongly in giving back to the community."

Selling the Vision

"We had to be psychologists, lovers, romancers, and con artists to get vendors aboard. Our ability to paint a picture of how that would take place--lowest prices, widest selection, and great customer service--was what convinced skeptical manufacturers to sell merchandise to us during the early years."

The Importance of Values

"I have never had anybody work for me in retailing who didn't work for me out of love, as opposed to fear. We carried this approach into building The Home Depot. We care about each other and we care about the customer. The things that we do for customers inside and outside the stores demonstrate our commitment to them. And then when something happens within the company, we circle the wagons. We help each other."

4 out of 5 stars The INDISPENSIBLE history of building a business from one store with zero sales to a $100 BILLION company. .......2007-01-18

It never ceases to amaze me in what it takes to satisfy a reader. When I read a book like this, I am basically asking myself several questions. How on earth did these guys do it? How did they come through the funnel and get it done. What was at stake? What were the major premises of the concept? Could it have failed, if so how? How close did it come to failing? Could some one else have done this, or replicated it, or perhaps have done it better.

A lot of life is pure fantasy. You have your own template of how things works, and you look at the world and you see that template everywhere. If you go out and try to apply this system and superimpose it onto the real world, it either fails or it succeeds. Sometimes the template is a good one, but the execution gets screwed up.

When I look at Home Depot, a story that I have an intimacy with, I found this particular book to be fabulous. There is nothing boring about it; in fact I found every page worthwhile. Having spent 35 years in Wall Street running money, and figuring out how does a company make a buck, I found this book even more worthwhile. If you are involved in the investment business, this becomes a particularly worthwhile read.

If you run a company or have aspirations towards a career in management, you better read this book, because there is something in it for everyone. For most of us, there is more than one thing in it. Peter Drucker the ultimate management mind of the 20th century probably said it best when he talked about the corporation as a living, breathing organism that required nourishment on a daily basis. You just can't assume that corporations will continue to exist simply because they exist now.

Every day a company fights for its corporate life, for its right to continue to exist. Those corporate entities that assume that they will always be around - NEVER LAST. Other entities out there either eat them up, or they suffer the slow final death of arrogance, and go out of business without even knowing why they went out.

Home Depot is the story of two guys that got up in the morning every morning, fighting for the right to keep doing it a better way. They lived by the credo that you have to keep moving or they will throw dirt on you. Some of the lessons and ideas you will learn from this book include the following:

· CUSTOMER SERVICE - You have to take care of good people, and constantly be on the lookout for them. If necessary hire them, even when you don't have the jobs for them because you may not get a second shot at them.

· DOING THE RIGHT THING ALL THE TIME - It can cost you money doing the right thing, but it comes back in spades. Something else happens when you do the right thing. People realize your efforts, and some will take advantage of you, but that will be more than offset by the multitude of others who will become loyal customers for life.

· NOBODY LOVES A COMPANY- They may love what you do, and what you do for them as customers, but there is no real loyalty to companies, at least in this generation. Home Depot always tried to make as many of their employees stockholders as possible, so that they could align the employee (associates at HD) goals with the corporate goals.

· THIS IS A TOUGH PLACE TO WORK IF YOU ARE INFLEXIBLE - This lesson was lost on the current Chairman, CEO Nardelli who was fired by the Board for his IMPERIAL management style. He also possessed no understanding of the Home Depot culture as he tried to superimpose his General Electric template on the company. He failed miserably but that's another book.

· IF YOU CAN SAVE THE CUSTOMER MONEY, DO IT - Always do the right thing by the customer, and you will have a customer for life. Go the extra mile for the customer. CULTIVATE the customer.

· THE FOUNDERS WERE LIVING ON THE FUMES OF DREAMS - I loved these stories. These guys Marcus and Blank were honest about what they faced, and several times this company was touching or facing bankruptcy. This is an important lesson. The way around it is to have twice as much capital as you think you need. This by itself was worth reading the entire book. This is priceless knowledge.

· IT'S ABOUT PRICE, SELECTION, AND CUSTOMER SERVICE - Never lose sight of this statement and act on it in your own business goals. Give people the best price you can, and the finest selection of merchandise. If you back it up with the industry's best customer service you have found for yourself a business model for success. It may sound simple, but try executing on it.

So let me let you in on a secret. I spent years with Bear Stearns well over 20 years ago as a limited partner. When I read the early financial stories of Home Depot on Wall Street, I knew that what the founders in this book were saying was the complete unvarnished truth.

The story of how Ross Perot, one of America's wealthiest men in the early 1980's blew having dominant control of this company is now the stuff of myths. Nevertheless it's a true story. The founders ultimately turned down Ross Perot as a shareholder. They believe Perot to be a control freak. Yes, Perot didn't want the founders driving around in a Cadillac. Perot was a Chevy man. Well, the Chevy man blew a $60 billion dollar fortune by not investing a couple of million in Home Depot.

Then there's Ken Langone, the financial guy behind this phenomenal story. Langone may be the only guy in America to be the IPO maven behind two all time American success stories. He successfully brought public both Ross Perot's EDS, and the Home Depot. Who else can say that? He also made a billion dollars in the process. Langone is a unique, fabulous, walk to the well with you kind of guy. Among Wall Street types, he is unique, and the Street needs many more like him.

There is a story in the book where Langone is involved in a stock sale to a very nasty executive who is very prominent in his own right. Every time the executive refuses to give in to Langone's price, Langone just keeps upping the ante on him. This goes on for pages. It is uproariously funny, and is deserving of retelling over and over again. You will love this book, and learn an enormous amount about business in the process. It should probably be required reading for all MBA programs in management.

If you have any desire to understand what it takes to dedicate your entire life to building something, especially in the business world than this book is a read for you. There's one more thing that I must get across that is compelling. Having spent my life involved with companies like Home Depot, and high-powered successful people, I have come to the conclusion that it does not have to work out successfully.

There is no such thing as one must succeed, or it was ordained that this must happen. As an example Home Depot could have gone out of business a half dozen times before becoming so financially solvent that the business model had to work.

Steve Jobs at Apple could have decided 20 years ago, to license that Apple operating system to the PC industry, and Gates and Microsoft would never have happened. GM could have decided to build quality cars 25 years ago, instead of building [...]for decades while the Japanese took the market away.

Al Gore could have concentrated just a little bit more on Florida in 2000, and George W. Bush would have never been. John Kerry could have fought off the challenge of the Swift Boat accusations, and Ohio would have gone his way, and with it the election.

In the end, it's really a question of who comes through the funnel, and that is not always predictable. As I read this wonderful book, I came to the conclusion once again, that yes, you have to go for it, and dedicate all to getting there, but there is no certitude that you are going to make it. Just make sure you follow YOUR PASSION, because no matter where you wind up, a PASSION FILLED LIFE is a life WORTH LIVING. Good luck.

1 out of 5 stars Home Depot provides a horrible experience.......2006-12-29

If you like wandering around with no service, ringing yourself out at the register, and watching a bunch of orange outfits ignore you, try Home Depot. The bigger the company gets, the more horrible the experience. Try True Hardware.

1 out of 5 stars I'm rich. I started a company. I wrote a book........2004-08-24

What a laugh. Yes you!!! The average American with your wealthy silent investor in your pocket. You too can open a store.

Home Depot has spent a good deal of money trying to improve its image; including writing these books. HD has serious problems with women suing them.If you tell the customer that you are serving them well, and beat them over the head that they are receiving top notch lip service, then eventually some will believe it.

HD has spent millions improving their stores by widening ailses and better lighting. They claim to be industry leaders yet can't seem to shake Lowes from opening stores all around HD stores and even in HD's home Atlanta market.

They are very aggressive and drive their employees to bring shareholder value. They do offer products for less and have had great financial backing.

They also control costs by "Rifting" which means they fire people that start earning enough money that it becomes cheaper to train someone else.

Its one thing to write a book to laud yourself. Why not write about all the dirty tricks you pulled to get there.

1 out of 5 stars Full of Lies.......2003-10-03

Let's face facts: home depot is known for abysmal service and really, really shoddy haphazard installations. They probably spend more on defending lawsuits than on store development. This book makes them look like such wizards, such brilliant and benevelont businessmen, when in fact they have done studies to see what the minimum level of customer service they can get away with is - and then tried to stretch that envelope.

I am sure Ken Lay could write books full of accolades to Enron. It would be just as true, and just as much a waste of time and money to read.

5 out of 5 stars A great story..........2003-09-07

and very well told, which really makes this book a fast read (I had a hard time putting it down).

Provides, IMO, valuable information that will be useful for any business owner. I am glad these guys took the time to share their story, and I hope I get to meet them one day.

What a great way to spend a rainy weekend. You'll love it as it reads like a novel. And you'll never look at Home Depot the same way.

    Book Description

Both a serious academic text and a delightful story, this book offers a clear, readable look at a full range of learning theories-from behavioral to cognitive- and also covers memory, motivation, connectionism (neural net models), and social learning. It concludes with a comprehensive synthesis. Its most apparent strength is its easily accessible style, but its greatest value lies in the clarity of its concepts. THEORIES OF HUMAN LEARNING is told by an old woman. But this old woman isn't just anyone. In fact, professors familiar with previous editions of this book may conclude that she is related to Kongor and Kro, those extraterrestrials who, in earlier editions, so successfully guided students through the maze of historic and current theories that help us understand how humans learn. And, wise as she is, the old woman does the job even more effectively than her predecessors in this fifth edition of THEORIES OF HUMAN LEARNING: WHAT THE OLD WOMAN SAID.

1 out of 5 stars Options made confusing.......2007-10-09

You would think that a person who writes a book on whatever subject is an expert or at least knowledgeable in the subject and he and his publishers would take due care to make presentation if not easy to read, but at least correct. Right? Wrong!

Consider as trivial a subject as simply defining what particular options are. Regarding buying put options the book states (p. 22, forth bullet): Your reward is potentially unlimited. With long puts your reward is unlimited to the downside...

Wow! Anyone who can read definitions of what options are, can see, that since every man, woman, and child know that stock price does not go to negative infinity the put downside is limited to the strike price minus what you paid for the option.

The book is full of such examples and what's clear that someone did not take care to edit this, as it has correct definition too on the very same subject just a few pages later (or earlier).

Unless you are a professional proofreader and enjoy this kind of stuff, spare yourself the trouble and read all the definitions and generally the basics of option trading written crisply and crystal clear, e.g. on Fidelity Investements web site.

    5 out of 5 stars A Terrific informative read!.......2007-09-30

For me the title says it all. This book really does make options easy and the author goes the extra mile by explaining everything in multiple ways. If you're logical, he covers it, if you're visual, he covers it and I'm a bit of both. I also appreciated the way in which every trade example was documented in a table and compared with a different type of trade. Great book.

4 out of 5 stars Apik untuk pemula, good for beginners.......2007-05-21

Bukune apik, untuk tingkat pemula, good for beginners, with detail explantions, but still need in depth about special tricks in difficult conditions.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to options trading.......2007-05-13

Serious option traders will want much more in-depth education on the ins and outs of option trading, but I would still recommend Cohen's "Options Made Easy" as the introductory book on options trading to anyone who wants to learn. He has a way of taking very complex topics and breaking down the basics into something the uninitiated can comprehend. More importantly, reading his book gave me confidence that I could learn this subject and successfully trade options myself.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-05-05

I found this book easy to understand. It's a very good introduction to the world of options trading and I would recommend it to anyone considering trading in options. It covers topics that some courses costing thousands just gloss over.

    Book Description

The Absolute #1 Bestseller in 6 Very Competitive Categories for 20 Straight Months!

Leading scientist and best-selling author at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com reveals the results and scientific breakthroughs from 110 landmark clinical studies, and 10 years of dedicated work, which guarantee that you will always have massive "steel erection", full ejaculation control, great endurance and multiple orgasms due to The VIP Muscle(R) in the safest, fastest, easiest and cheapest possible ways.

    Hello, I am Alan Ritz.
If you are like most of my friends, you may be searching for the perfect blend of science-based recommendations and simple step-by-step plans for fast and effortless achievement of better erection, performance and multiple orgasms. If you become increasingly discouraged in the search for simple, safe and clinically proven approaches, my "very good book" J. Gilbert, ForeWordreviews.com reveals all scientifically guaranteed methods and solutions.

The book contains everything you will ever need to know and use. Discover step-by-step how to achieve and maintain for the rest of your life significant stamina, hardness, ejaculation control and volume, sensitivity, libido and number of multi-orgasms with or without a partner. The recommendations are fool-proof. You don't have to learn or practice any exercises as most of the similar books require. What is more, all of my competitors use "may" when talking about the results. Save weeks and even months of workouts and dieting for not guaranteed results.

Take advantage of my breakthrough discovery- The VIP Muscle(R), which is the real generator of male multiple orgasms. It takes less than 15 seconds to find it and any sexually healthy man can use it for multi-orgasms in a matter of days. Experience daily this exclusive euphoric pleasure very few men know about. Achieve the ultimate in multi-orgasmic (solo) sex quickly and effortlessly.

Avoid contracting the PC muscle (located below the testicles) or manually stimulating your prostate gland as other authors recommend because this leads to hyperactivation of the executive ejaculation nerves in your genitals. This causes/worsens premature ejaculation in the long term! You may try it for yourself and then come back to me for the safe alternative- the VIP Muscle. What is more, the latest published clinical studies point that premature ejaculation is usually caused by overproduction of the stress hormone Adrenalin. The other common reason is inflamed/enlarged prostate, which is also addressed in my book. All of my competitors still recommend outdated mechanical exercises, although it is well known today that this is exclusively a biochemical/internal problem, which is the fastest and easiest to solve out of several discussed in my book. Discover also why erectile dysfunction/impotence occurs and what its natural, simple and permanent solutions are.

Ladies, you can secretly help your men with the "stealth" advice from the book. 90% of the discussed supplements are undetectable. Easily find out from simple questions and answers how to diagnose and eliminate his deficiencies even in 72 hours. You may select between common food sources or very affordable, safe and undetectable supplements, which are available everywhere. He will need a multi vitamin and mineral formula as well as one little-known supplement for one area for improvement. My objective is to show you how to achieve maximum results with minimum investment. Significantly improve his sexual health and overall performance in bed to get every time the quality and quantity of sex you want in order to be very satisfied. Thus, you will both enjoy a healthier and stronger relationship and better sex.

The book provides the latest, crucial research for men of all ages, including teenagers. I have recommended science-based ejaculation frequency for each age group to prevent overejaculations. They lead to more than 24 major health problems, incurable by medical doctors, which seriously undermine their sexual life. The list includes premature ejaculation, anxiety, emotional eating, aggressive/depressed behavior, low back pain, lack of libido and power, dizziness, hot flashes, blurry vision, etc. They are usually caused by deficiencies of little-known substances in your biochemistry and nervous system. The book's content is focused mostly on them. You can solve naturally all of these problems for up to 100% with time by following the advice from the book.

More little-known information and solutions provides my "excellent" H. Froeschl, Bookreview.com, simple and very effective lifestyle program Your Scientific Diet(R) for Men, which guarantees fast and permanent weight loss and natural prevention/solutions to obesity-related hypertension, impotence, and other challenges in the healthiest, cheapest and easiest possible ways. Your Scientific Diet(R) for Women was just released.

Discover how exactly popular "jelqing techniques", "penis enlargement devices", and "sex pills" will severely harm your sexual health. Some of my competitors recommend them but I only expose them! As a scientist, I stick to exact numbers, verifiable scientific data, clinically proven methods and guaranteed results. That's why all of the recommendations include only substances approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and the essence of 110 references to leading medical, urological and research journals. This guarantees 100% safety, reliability and credibility of the provided in some cases scientific breakthrough information.

I guide you step-by-step what, when and how to use. Thanks to feedback, I had anticipated most of the concerns and objections that may arise. The book is professionally edited and organized for fastest access to any part that interests you the most. There are also numerous step-by-step plans and examples from real people, including me as well. So rest assured that everything is simple, enjoyable to read and easy to understand and follow. That's why you will never get stuck, especially when there is nothing to learn or practice. Any apprehension from understanding science-based information will quickly disappear and you can benefit from it right from the first day. (continues below)

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Results are Absolutely Amazing........2007-02-19

FABULOUS! Thank you Alan Ritz. Buy this book and carefully listen to the author following his recommendations I GUARANTEE you are going to likely have results. The book goes over a wide range of issues regarding enlargement, premature ejaculation, dysfuntion, impotenence, multiple orgasms and male sexual health. INcluding, addressing all the magic, uneffective potentially dangerous options that don't work and all the rhetoric sold bought into. I can't say enough good things about the book. This isn't just take a pill all your challenges resolved what have you. Pay close attention to the nutritional advice it's particularly helpful. I take my suppliments four times throughout the day all the way to evening. Do what I call conditioning exercises. Drink pleanty of fluids limiting my caffiene and be conscientious about what I eat. Can't emphasise enough to be patient with yourself really open up. And, to NOT overdo it on vitamins, minerals, ETC. Adequate amounts continuously, more isn't better. Alot of this is associated with one's degree of comfort. Along with this you might want to looking into learning a little bit of meditation to compliment or yoga type of material though, not necessarily that important depending on your individual sircumstance. Breathing that sort of thing. Lastly, knocking off smoking's would be considerably advantageous. All I can say is GET this book. Invest in following the recommendations making them a habit they're actually rather simple. Just making some adjustments brings results rather soon. Few if any men and relationships won't benefit. Look forward to reading his diet for healthful living! 5+ STARS***

    5 out of 5 stars 6 STARS . . .how about 7?.......2006-08-19

This book is everything it is said to be. To know that there is an answer to ED other than the new ed pills should be talked about on the local news. I've only been following the advice in this book for a couple of weeks and can tell you that it helps return to (steel). How often remains to be seen. For the first time in my life I feel positive about finding a wife without having ED hanging over the relationship like a dark cloud.

    5 out of 5 stars I became a Sex God!.......2006-03-08

Wow, the results are INCREDIBLE! I needed just 4 days to increase my endurance from 15 minutes to 45+! You can hardly imagine what kind of confidence booster is that! My sensitivity was the first thing that dramatically increased within 48 hours and it’s great now! My erection is harder than ever and I am confident that it will gradually expand. I am sooooooooo excited, happy and proud of my brand new abilities and superior performance in bed. Women also notice that I have changed for better and are more willing to get out with me as well as to get laid more than ever. I can’t recommend this exceptional book enough!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2006-03-08

This is the book for you, if you are looking for a 6-star guide with exclusive content based on many landmark and referenced scientific discoveries. Are they very important? Definitely yes because I have never thought that every aspect of my sexuality can improve so quickly, effortlessly and without spending a small fortune on little-known supplements which I found in my local drug store. This book is nothing but a blessing for every man and his partner. That’s why I urge you to give it a try.

    5 out of 5 stars "VIP", hands-free, multi-orgasmic ecstasy every time!.......2006-03-08

Hi everyone. I also came back to support this incredible book because it delivers what it promises and my sexual life has improved so much. My favorite part is the breakthrough "VIP muscle" and multiple orgasms. I have always strived to be on top as well as to be the active partner. Well, not any more. Ritz is right by saying that the "Mountain Peaks position" allows the best and strongest orgasms. I simply have to lay on my back so my tigress can jump on me and synchronize the contractions of my VIP muscle with her movements for hands-free, mind blowing, multi-orgasmic pleasure!

She is so happy that I don't insist any more to be on top most of the time and both of us have really "ultimate sex" every time. I'm so happy and proud to have a copy. The best part is that I still have more than half of the suggestions to try out because they are so many and all of them are incredible! Get a copy and see for yourself.
