Book Description

Have you ever wondered why some relationships are wonderful and others are just catastrophic and tragic? Why do we get along with some people and with others just seem to constantly engage in bitter fighting? In this fascinating and helpful book, internationally renowned psychic Sylvia Browne examines why we form our relationships with certain individuals . . . for better or for worse. From the lifelong connection of a loving marriage to the short and bitter agony of a brief encounter leading to divorce and heartache, she reveals why we have joyful and happy relationships on the one hand and chaotic, hateful and painful ones on the other.
Sylvia takes us on a remarkable excursion that covers all the different types of relationships we’ll encounter in life. From our childhood experiences to our golden years, she helps us see why we form both good and bad unions, and she also explores how our themes and charts of life can interact with others in both positive and negative ways—creating either lifelong love or friendship or a situation doomed for disaster. Sylvia enables us to come to a true understanding of why we have certain compulsions and attractions for some people while being totally repulsed by others. By utilizing Sylvia’s marvelous insights, we can all learn how to cultivate our relationships (and sift the wheat from the chaff) in order to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

3 out of 5 stars It was just okay........2007-10-04

Sylvia's books these days seem to be more full of, "fluff," than anything else. There is no more original content. This book seems to be more of her ramblings about the people she knows or meets in her life. There is of course a purpose and you need to read through all the, "fluff," to get to the point. I guess if she just flat out told you the point there would be 200 blank pages to fill.

3 out of 5 stars I dont love this one as much as her other books.......2007-10-03

While I always get a good feeling of having learned something after reading her books, this one left me hanging. I was waiting for more.

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening Book on Spiritual Relationships.......2007-09-05

As Sylvia Browne asserts many books have been written on having a better sex life, staying married or how to have a friendly divorce. This is one of the few books available on spiritual meaning of relationships in our lives.

Sylvia shows how to bring spiritual understanding to our relationships - that our relationships have a deeper meaning. The people in our life have been selected by our soul before our birth for our spiritual development. So each person in our life teaches us something and we in turn teach them something. Even people we meet casually such as the grocery store clerk, bank teller or the person delivering our mail all are part of spiritual connections in our lives.

Connection with family and close friends is often taken for granted but these relationships are particularly conducive for our growth. Browne even contends that the annoying co-worker or boss can teach us important lessons for our soul growth. The best part of the book is the exploration of the 47 life themes, which have a higher and lower expression.

The book has a warm tone because Sylvia shares her own relationship challenges. This book is worth reading just for the Life Themes and fans of Sylvia Browne will be most satisfied with this book, since it gives a lot of depth to her ideas previously stated elsewhere.

(***If you're interested in other books about relationships check out "Sacred Contracts: Awakening Your Divine Potential" by Caroline Myss or "Nexus: A Neo Novel" by Deborah Morrison and Arvind Singh***)

1 out of 5 stars No one knows more about yourself than you do.......2007-08-19

Who are these people giving this book 4 and 5 stars and do they really know about Sylvia Browne? Even the few bad reviews are from fans who claim to "love" her and sound rather apologetic for giving her anything but the highest praise. What's going on? Someone please tell me, did I just enter the Twilight Zone...?

I have always been fascinated with Sylvia Browne because she is probably the most famous psychic of any first-world country. So, I decided to read this book with an open mind. But I wasn't at all happy with it. It seems shoddy, choppy and thrown together quickly. And Sylvia doesn't offer up anything (in the way of literary references) to back up her claims. I suppose some could say that this is based on "blind faith." But should faith also be deaf, dumb and stupid?

For years, I have watched Sylvia on the Montel Show and she always arrogantly seems so cocky when she doles out her "readings." For example, someone could tell her that such and such happened to them and Sylvia will quickly reply, "oh I know" as if she really does know. But if she knew, why didn't she volunteer this info up front, first? I have also noticed that she almost always exclusively only gives detailed info about past lives, the "after world," and other deceased "spirits." But Sylvia Browne is never overly explicit or detailed when she is talking about the here and now. Why is that? Also, one more thing I have noticed about Sylvia; she always seems incredibly cold, condescending, downright rude, pushy, bored, and incredibly belittling when she gives her "readings." Shouldn't a spiritual advisor be welcoming, loving, warm and inviting? Has Sylvia ever comforted any of the grieving parents on Montel or has she ever given any of them a gratis reading after the show when the cameras weren't rolling? No she has not. That is a fact. I can remember a lady once kept pressing her with specific questions on the show, and Sylvia became very aggravated and said something to the effect of, "this is what I 'see' and that's that." Talk about being a wolf in wolf's clothing. Maybe that's better because she would be easier to spot? You'd think so, but people still adore her and worship her and follow her advice to the letter.

When is the last time a corporation also referred to their organization as a church? Sylvia Browne does it. But her "corporation" and "church" are more like a cult because it's all about money and profit; not about adding some happiness and spirituality into someone's life (free of charge.) And if in fact she is a leader of a church, why should she charge her parishioners that want to seek her out for advice? At best, this is an oxymoron: Sylvia Browne Corp./Church. Does Sylvia Browne/the Sylvia Browne Corp. pay taxes? Or is she tax-exempt? This is a very valid question.

I decided to do a little research after reading "Spiritual Connections" by Sylvia because I wanted to see if she really was all she was cracked up to be; after all, maybe I am just being super-critical and Sylvia is honest and totally caring and loving? I began my search on Wikipedia.

From there, I found an incredibly informative site, StopSylviaBrowne. I spent more than 3 straight hours on that site reading everything I could about Sylvia. I have never seen a site so professionally laid out that included facts to back up everything the Webmaster stated. Everything that I initially felt about Sylvia was confirmed (and more.) I have since learned that Sylvia Browne is a convicted felon that preys on vulnerable people because these are the ones that are most likely to pay exorbitant moneys for "help", buy her books, go to her events and recommend her. I have also found out that her first husband has totally discredited her and her son (who also claims to be a psychic.) And, I have found out that Sylvia was caught in numerous half-truths, made-up stories and downright lies. The most notable being her higher-education; she has stated that she has a Masters Degree in English. There is zero proof that Sylvia has a Masters Degree in English from any accredited institution.

If you simply think that Sylvia is total entertainment and you watch her on TV or read her books once in a while then that's fine in and of it self. I suppose there's no harm in that. But if you're about to shell out the hundreds of dollars for one of her "telephone readings" or the thousands of dollars for one of her "in-person meetings" then I strongly recommend that you do some research on her first because I don't want you to be taken advantage of. One more thing that Sylvia's followers should keep in mind is that no one knows more about yourself than you do!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly !.......2007-08-09

After reading "Spiritual Connections," I was totally and utterly amazed by Sylvia's profound spiritual insights and fascinating perspectives (especially through her invisible spirit guide Francine, who seems to have come into Sylvia's life in three or five contradictory ways, depending on which Browne tome you read). Her astounding proven accuracy as a psychic, totally verifiable, has convinced me that Sylvia's the real deal, a veritable Goddess on Earth with disturbingly long talons, and she's well worth the mad money she charges for her phone consults! Forget your so-called hifalutin' "science," forget those overeducated quacks with PhDs and researchers with their fancy protocols and let Sylvia be your guide. Humans just want proof, proof, proof. Surrender your power to her, open heart and wallet. No less an authority on psychic matters than Montel endorses her, as do her true believers, so she must be the real deal. By all means, buy this book NOW! Buy a spare, just in case! Get an extra for a friend!

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening read.......2007-10-18

I found this book to be written with a sense of humor mingled with heart felt truth. Rob Bell gives personal and biblical references for his premise. He shares ideas with clarity and an enlightened perspective. His view about the nature of human sexuality and how it is a gift from God was refreshing to hear. He explains in various ways how our sexuality is such an important part of who we are in many realms beyond the physical. It is a beautiful and poignant truth about our spiritual and sexual connection.

5 out of 5 stars Sex God.......2007-10-10

Great Book! Whether or not you agree with the author, Rob Bell, his book is an enjoyable read/listen as his enthusiasm and joy at the majesty of God are contagious. Rob takes you through the evolution of God's love expressed in the union between a woman and a man. The book would be appropriate (and recommended) for any young teen getting to the age of dating and considering serious relationships. And it's great for those who are married to help reaffirm their love.
I'd recommend anyone having marital problems to listen/read the book together and rediscover the beauty and holiness of God's gift of a man and woman to each other. Go through it together chapter by chapter, thought by thought and discuss those things that both of you find challenging. But listen to the whole book once first together or alone.
The audio CD is read by Rob and he is one of the few authors I enjoy hearing read his own work. I also recommend his book Velvet Elvis on CD. The print in his books is a little hard for my older eyes to see. But his CDs are marvelous!

5 out of 5 stars Flat out amazing.......2007-09-26

Rob Bell really connects with his readers in this book and I would recommend it for people of any age

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous perspective with an easy approach.......2007-09-09

With it's provocative title, this book can seem like something to be afraid of. on the contrary, Rob Bell does an excellent job at not only sharing a fair perspective of sex and spirituality both with and without Christian orientation, but he also walks the reader through it quite easily. With an almost Socratic approach, the reader can realize meanings and derive personal conclusions through the authors suggestive questioning (much more pleasant than if the auther were to share an epiphany and use the rest of the book as means of persuasion, especially with such a bold subject)

5 out of 5 stars Sex Is Not The Answer.......2007-09-07

This was an excellent book if you are looking to understand why sex is so prevalent in this day and age when we all seem to be ever more so disconnected from reality.

The greatest thing about this book is that it provides so many ways to study. The book has a website and a CD rom, where you can read the book, do very helpful activities, hear MP3 tutor sessions with the author and more. If you don't understand something, there are so many ways to study it, that it won't take long before you will.

When I first purchased this book from my school bookstore, I gulped after looking at their price tag over $130. After returning it and purchansing a used copy from Amazon, I couldn't believe the condition that it was in. It was "like new" just the way my seller claimed it to be.

5 out of 5 stars I feel educated every time I use this book..........2006-03-11

This is a great book!! I'm an English Lit. major and wanted to focus a bit on science and got myself this book. It's so wonderfully written! It explains very clearly and it has a CD-rom with excercises. Even if you're not taking an intro-biology course this book is useful and easy to use for self study. The book is devided into theme chapters and covers about everything you can think of in the natural world. It's no doubt a very good introduction to further study in biology. I feel educated every time I use this book!
I'd give more than 5 stars if that was possible.

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price

Dr. John E. Sarno, author of the revolutionary book Mind Over Back Pain, is a medical pioneer whose program has helped thousands of patients overcome their back conditions--without drugs or dangerous surgery. Now, using his latest research into TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome), Dr. Sarno goes one step further: after identifying stress and other psychological factors in back pain, he demonstrates how many of his patients have then gone on to heal themselves without exercise or other physical therapy. Find out:· Why self motivated and successful people are prone to TMS· How anxiety and repressed anger trigger muscle spasms· How people "train themselves" to experience back pain· How you may get relief from back pain· How you may get relief from back pain within two to six weeks by recognizing TMS and its causes With case histories and the results of in-depth mind-body research, Dr. Sarno describes how patients recognize the emotional roots of their TMS and sever the connections between mental and physical pain and how, just by reading this book, you may start recovering from back pain today.

5 out of 5 stars An accidental, miraculous find!.......2007-09-25

I've been fighting spondy in my L5/S1 region, as well as nerve damage, since 1993/94 (due to injury). The diagnosis and prognosis continues to puzzle my orthopedic professionals for many years now because I refuse to have a fusion until the day arrives that I can no longer walk. Arthritic flare-ups during winter months have pretty much turned me against cold weather. The bursitis in my left hip has become so much worse that I was referred to a physical therapist who specializes in hip/pelvic work. At present, I am only 42 years old, but my doctors have taken everything away from me that I love doing. Most activities require more 'back' straining than they say I can handle. This is a hard pill to swallow for someone who had led a very active lifestyle until the age of 29.

I don't take med's. I truly believe in PT as a way to keep myself motivated to do what I can. So I visited this newly referred PT. She's great; she found so many things going on inside me. But to touch me was excruciating. When we started talking about how the injuries occurred, she learned more than she bargained for. There is much traumatic history that goes with the damage. I told her I had finished writing my book about what happened and how I had to dig up a lot of the memories to get the details in print (not published yet). She told me about a book another patient had told her about. I immediately bought this book. To be honest, as a psychology minor, I was rather skeptical about the content as far as the first chapter. Amazingly, by the end of Chapter 2, I was 100% pain-free!

I visited the PT at mid-way of the book. I said nothing about how I was feeling; just told her I'd been reading the book she recommended. (Note, she had NOT yet read this book). As she was palpating all the trigger points of where my pain lived, she commented something was so not normal for me, that I had not screamed the first time that visit! I told her she has to read this book because it speaks to the subconscious mind, somehow, for I had done nothing but read. There had been no written exercises, just enlightened reading. The following week I returned to her and she found that I was still pain-free, even with adding cardio (walks) to my daily routine... something that was not even in the picture for so long.

I've been pain-free for 1 month now. I'm a newbie at this, and I'm so enjoying the feeling of 'freedom' from the pain that had bound me for years. I added another activity this weekend: I had to wash my lawn tractor. To my surprise, there is still NO pain!!! My friends talk to me on the phone and comment how "calm" and positive I sound. They are amazed at the change in me. Chronic pain messes with the whole of a person, not just an area or two. My mood is upbeat always, stress doesn't bother me now (I've been juggling home ownership crises with a smile!), and I just feel I can conquer any mountain now.

I spoke with my GP about this book, also, as I have about other 'non-traditional diagnoses and treatment' books. He's a great GP and his favorite pass time is endocrinology. As I showed him the book, his face lit up and he said, "I love that book!"

I've recommended this book to friends and colleagues who have struggled with unending pain, some for far longer than I. It is my hope that others will learn of this theory and realize that TMS is a part of our culture that continues to evolve in the arena of those who still 'practice' medicine. I believe Dr. Sarno has finished his 'practice' and has hit the nail on the head with this! Denial is a very powerful thing, and once the issues are acknowledged and validated, they (and the denial) find their way to release a person. It seems Dr. Sarno's sermon is that it's okay to be angry, but not okay to hide it for fear of what others will think. It hurts only the person who bottles the anger.

This book is incredible and John Sarno really explains his practice well. The whole theory is fascinating and can be life changing if you allow it. I highly recommend this book especially if you have "tried everything" for your back pain and only get temporary relief.

5 out of 5 stars A MONEY-BACK GAURANTEE..........2007-09-03

...would be one sure way to silence any detractors. It worked for me and has obviously worked for others. It will obviously not work for everyone, particularly those with actual physical disorders. The hour or two it takes to read this book and the $15 to purchase it for the possible relief of chronic back pain? I'd say it's worth the risk. Or you could go throw your cash at a pseudo-doctor who has no vested interest in your getting well. (When is the last time you turned away an opportunity to increase your income?)

5 out of 5 stars A review of the reviews..........2007-10-13

I can't help but respond to some of the reviews about the Little Black Book of Connections. The people who wrote bad reviews all seem to point to the fact that the book contains clever ways to get you to the author's site and register. Isn't that the point ? The first step to making a connection ? Making the first contact ?

This book is so well written, I can't believe these people read the book and that's all they can say is, "He's trying to get my information so he can sell me."

People who don't like being "sold" to, will never be able to sell. My advice to anyone considering buying this book...If you want some networking "gold" buy this book. If you don't want to be "sold" to, keep your hourly wage job and hope that Medicare and Social Security is still around when you retire broke.

Gitomer is such a fun writer, his style and examples make you smile and laugh out loud at times. He keeps your attention and gives you great calls to action to get you doing something with what you are reading. I have read many of his books and this is a great quick read to get you going in making relationships work better for you. After you read this one, go and get Richard Abraham's book MR. SHMOOZE- The Art and Science of Selling Through Relationships to take it another level. A great investment in your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-11

Excellent book on networking. One of the very few that will talk about giving before receiving; more than a networking book it's a book that'll teach you to build long lasting friendships. These will eventually help you move ahead in life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Black Handbook of Connections.......2007-09-05

Jeffrey Gitomer is a professional at life. He provided many great insights into connecting and networking through a collection of lists of his own "proverbs" and altruisms. I doubt anyone can read this all at once; but the book is great when you read a few lists until you find something that really strikes you, and then practice it for a few weeks before going back to this great reference work. Very good!

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-05-13

Totally comprehensive - so far I've dipped in and out of this book and found it very informative. Such a complicated issue I'm not sure I've identified my own problem yet but have many chapters to read.

4 out of 5 stars Women's health.......2007-01-10

This book was great for helping me get the nerve to face the issues I needed to face. It let me know how to face some issues with confidence. A good book for anyone who is facing issues that they can't seem to get across to the medical profession.

5 out of 5 stars I am a patient of Dr. Vliet .......2006-07-28

I purchased Dr. Vliet's book while searching for relief from a difficult gynecological and urinary tract problem. I found the chapters dealing with my problem very easy to read and could not put it down. I was so impressed, that I made an appointment to visit her office. Over 4 hours were spent at Dr. Vliet's office going over in great detail my medical history. I had these problems for almost 20 years, and other doctors had told me "it was all in my head"! Dr. Vliet clearly explained why I had these problems and we developed a successful treatment plan. The staff was empathetic and knowledgable. Her research is exceptional and I have recommended this book to other doctors and medical professionals. Very few doctors are knowledgable about hormones largely do to the misinformation in the press and the propaganda distributed by the drug companies. It has been 3 years since I first visited Dr. Vliet and I thank God every day that I found this book and my life has returned to normal.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, But Not Easy to Read!.......2006-03-31

This book is fantastic and you get a true sense in your gut that she is telling the facts. I have recommended this book to several doctor friends and regular friends, who all have ordered it. All my friends have the same complaint, that their doctors won't listen to them or won't give them the tests they want. Fortunately my dr. is very open to trying different things. What my doctor said, is it's my body and I can chose how to deal with it. One thing that is interesting, is that I asked my doctor for the N-telopeptide (NTx) test, and they had never heard of it. Also the lab where I had the test done had never heard of it either. Just goes to show you have to be your own advocate!

The only bad thing about this book, is it is not easy reading. I am on my fourth reading, trying to absorb and notate the various things. You have to read and dig out the various things that you have to do, they are not all cleary spelled out. And if you are in that "fuzzy" state in your life, this makes it even harder. But it's a definate buy!

Book Description

Miller's LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, 14th Edition is the most comprehensive and up-to-date environmental science text on the market. It has the most balanced approach to environmental science instruction, with bias-free comparative diagrams throughout and a focus on prevention of and solutions to environmental problems. Tyler Miller is the most successful author in academic writing on environmental science because of his attention to currency, trend setting presentation of content, ability to predict student and instructor needs for new and different supplements, and his ability to retain the hallmarks on which instructors have come to depend. The content in the 14th edition of LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT is everything you have come to expect and more. In this edition, the author has added the "How Would You Vote?" feature, which is an application of environmental science-related topics in the news. Students apply their environmental science knowledge from the book to a Web activity, which helps them investigate environmental science issues in a structured manner. They then cast their votes on the Web. Results are then tallied. Also found at the Miller website is the much used "Updates on Line." Updated twice a year with articles from InfoTrac College Edition service, CNN® Today Video Clips, and Web links, instructors can seamlessly incorporate the most current news articles and research findings to support text presentations. This is a time saver for instructors and part-time teachers who can quickly determine what ancillary materials they want to utilize in just minutes. As with the last edition, this text is packaged with a free Student CD-ROM entitled "Interactive Concepts in Environmental Science." Organized by chapter, the CD gives students links to relevant resources, narrated animations, interactive figures, and prompts to review material and test themselves.

1 out of 5 stars made me angry.......2007-09-23

I have not read the whole book yet, and I have the 2004 edition (#13). I truly hope the newer editions are better. This is a review of Chapter 1 only.

The chapter annoyed me. It even made me angry. It is milquetoast, unable to just say we, the human population, is depleting too many resources to be sustainable. Adding the statement "other analysts do not believe we are living unsustainably" to an Environmental Science textbook is like saying "some people believe the earth is flat," in a geography textbook, or, something that unfortunately seems to happen in some biology textbooks these days, "evolution is just one theory, there are other theories as well, some experts believe god created all life on earth as it is today." A similar statement was made in part 1-6, "Is our Present Course Sustainable?." "Are things getting better or worse? Experts disagree..." Experts paid by huge resource exploiting corporations? Experts who like to bury their heads in the sand?

There were a number of interesting facts in the text that the general statements did not reflect. These inconsistencies really got to me. It seemed as if it were trying to write about what was outside the box but writing from inside the box. I particularly disliked the sentence that included: "... how much more we need to do to help make the earth more sustainable..." Wait a second, if you were writing from a viewpoint that "Nature does not exist just for us and we only think we are in charge. We need the earth, but the earth does not need us," how can you talk about "making the earth more sustainable?" The earth is what it is and is bountiful, it is our resource exploitation and pollution that are not sustainable for human survival.

I found the first part of the side bar "Free-Access Resources and the Tragedy of the Commons" quite interesting, but the second part on solutions seemed to missing a lot. The first of the two listed solutions was: "Use free-access resources at rates well below their estimated sustainable yields or overload limits by reducing population, regulating access, or both." It then went on to say how this is rarely used since it means we would have to establish and enforce rules and regulations, and it is hard to figure out a sustained yield. But it doesn't mention that educating people about these resources that they take for granted could go along way. Also not mentioned is that regulating the devices that allow people to exploit these resources (such as clean air, the atmosphere, water and wildlife) so easily and unthinkingly would be much easier than regulating their actual use. A lot of the resources mentioned are being depleted by pollution not use in a strict sense. The other solution listed is: "Convert free-access resources to private ownership," since if someone owns something they will protect it, has so many problems which are not addressed. The books lists the problem with this solution as being that "it is not practical for global common resources (such as the atmosphere, the open ocean, most wildlife species, and migratory birds) that can not be divided up and converted to private property." What about the fact that people do exploit the resources that they do own, and the fact that it would no doubt cause even more problems with poverty, and sharing things in common is what brings people together as a community (e.g. they all go to the park and see each other), and so many other problems that I get overwhelmed just thinking about them.

There was a lot of talk about overpopulation as a major problem, but not so much talk about overconsumption by certain parts of the population, even though there were sections on this. There was a section on ecological foot print and how the people in the USA have such a large one, but this didn't seem to get integrated into the text. There was also the statement: "Thus poor parents in a developing country would need 70 - 200 children to have the same lifetime resource consumption as 2 children in a typical U.S. family," but there was a lot of emphasis on population as a major problem and how in underdeveloped countries populations are growing as such a fast rate, when slight rises in US middle/upper class populations can make so much more difference. It felt to me like too much blame poor people in poor countries when it is people in the US and corporations based in the US enriching people in the US who are causing so much of the problems, even exporting our TV and advertisements to other countries which makes people want our unsustainable lifestyle.

There was also no mention of empowering women as a major tool to deal with high birthrates. There is overwhelming evidence that when you empower women to choses when they want to get pregnant and give them education and job skills birthrates do down. The paragraph on why poor people have so many children basically says the reason is to have their labor, with no mention of lack of birth control or power of women to make choices. It also seemed racist and disrespectful.

While we are on the subject of racist and disrespectful, what is with the developed and developing labels? The societies in all countries are developed, it is just industrial manufacturing and certain kinds of resource exploitation that are not as developed.

One last perhaps picky complaint. Figure 1-13 mentions "Traditional decision making" and "traditional societies" but it really does not mean traditional, it means modern industrialized hierarchical societies. This may seem picky but I feel it really does matter, we need to keep remembering that these societies we are living in are new, not traditional. True traditional societies did merge social, economic and environmental issues when making decisions, in fact, they did so in all aspects of living their lives. What we need to do is get back to them.

1 out of 5 stars Policical retoric and not science.......2007-04-29

The state of Washington mails each registered voter a "Voter's Pamphlet" with statements for and against each initiative and candidate.

This book has the same format as a page for initiative X complete with rebuttals, but no page against initiative X.

This is completely one sided political rhetoric.

Why are high school students being given 815 pages of brainwashing?

I can understand some political extremest writing this book, but why would the Mercer Island school district buy this book?

I know science.
This ain't science.
Maybe political science.

5 out of 5 stars Good Practical Book.......2007-04-20

Being a chemistry student, I've read this book as part of my classes. I've got to say, it's an excellent book, definitely worth reading by itself. It offers concrete, pragmatic solutions and an unbiased collection of scientificly supported descriptions of environmental problems and how to deal with them. It's also almost completely devoid of gloom and doom, as opposed to some of today's green movements. Very much recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Schoolbook review.......2007-01-03

I found this book to be fairly well written with only a little bias toward evolution, an unproven scientific theory.

5 out of 5 stars Reviews, anyone?.......2006-01-18

This is an excellent textbook, one that I have used in two of my Environmental Science classes (namely, Environmental Problems of Man [Bio 11], and Energy for the Future [Envi Sci 1].) While not completely without bias (which is mostly subtle, and not totally incorrect), the book offers a solid introduction to many environmental issues. The introduction chapter of the textbook states that environmental science is interdisciplinary, and the book is laid out accordingly. Chapters run the gamut from biology, chemisty, simple physics, and pure ecological common sense. An excellent purchase for any serious scientist and/or conscientious environmentalist.

Book Description

This is the anatomy and physiology text written especially for students and practitioners of massage therapy. This edition integrates massage therapy concepts within the anatomy and physiology content, including sections that discuss how massage interacts with the body systems. The book covers all of the major body systems--integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems--that are crucial to effective massage therapy, and provides an overview of other body systems to give students a well-rounded understanding of anatomy and physiology.

1 out of 5 stars The worst.......2005-02-21

I curently teach Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Kinesiology and various bodywork modalities at three separate, well known massage schools. This is the worst A & P text I have ever come across. I do not make this statement lightly. For 12 years I've recieved countless complimentary copies from major publishers and nothing compares to this mess.

It was obviously thrown together in a hurry to get it out there as "the only A & P text written for massage therapists".

It is poorly written. In most chapters, it offers little more than lists of terms and definitions. It has no consistency in text, nor in use of pictures. This text offers few examples, nor analogies, and it rarely explores the hows or whys of A & P. Its weaknesses are endless. My current students find it completely innaccesible. Heck, I can barely read it.

Prior to the start of the school year the owner of one school asked my opinion on switching to The Massage Connection. My opinion to him - don't do it! He decided to use it anyway. As luck would have it, he has ended up teaching portions of A&P. The result: The Massage Connection will not be our A&P text next year. He hates it as much as I do.

Sure, my review is harsh, but fair.
I just do not understand what Williams & Wilkins was thinking when they allowed this text to go to print?

5 out of 5 stars Good book for learning A and P.......2004-09-10

I used this book as one of my references for learning anatomy and physiology in massage school. The book is pretty easy-to-understand and I think it definitely helped me through school. I also loved Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Patrick Leonardi. These had great questions to review for my A and P tests. There were lots of pertinent questions that were needed for preparing for my exams. These three books made learning A and P much easier for me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I like this book so much I am buying copies for my students!.......2005-01-12

I have been a college student and subsequently a teacher of chemistry for a number of years now and this is the first book that has really impressed me enough so that I want to continue teaching from it for years to come. I think the writing is clear and at the appropriate level for junior college students in a general introductory course. We only cover the first 11 chapters in our quarter, but the content, problems, and photography are superb.

I detest the racket of publishers putting out new editions every other year or so, forcing poor college students to fork over $120 per book for a course that may require more than one textbook! So I have taken it upon myself to buy up used copies of this edition (no way will the college bookstore buy them back from the students!) and distribute them to my students on a loaner basis for the duration of the course. Sure wish I had had a teacher like me! This book is a 1000 times better than the text I used at the University of California in the year-long sequence! The new edition (4th) is essentially the same book, just a nice new cover and an inflated price. My only complaint about the book is that it was not glued together well at the plant when they made them, as all of the first pages tend to fall out or pull out with too much use when students refer to the periodic table inside the front cover.

So that's my 2 cents, just please don't compete with me for the reasonably priced used 3rd editions. I already have bought over 50, though, so you really wouldn't hurt my program, but I intend to keep snatching them up!

4 out of 5 stars pretty easy to read.......2002-08-05

i liked this book. the examples were easy to read and the book was a decent introduction to chemistry. if u are required to get this book for an introductory class. dont worry too much its not that hard.
