Book Description

From the most highly respected analyst of foreign policy writing today, a story of wasted opportunity and squandered prestige: a critique of the last three U.S. presidents' foreign policy.

America's most distinguished commentator on foreign policy, former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, offers a reasoned but unsparing assessment of the last three presidential administrations' foreign policy. Though spanning less than two decades, these administrations cover a vitally important turning point in world history: the period in which the United States, having emerged from the Cold War with unprecedented power and prestige, managed to squander both in a remarkably short time. This is a tale of decline: from the competent but conventional thinking of the first Bush administration, to the well-intentioned self-indulgence of the Clinton administration, to the mortgaging of America's future by the "suicidal statecraft" of the second Bush administration. Brzezinski concludes with a chapter on how America can regain its lost prestige. This scholarly yet highly opinionated book is sure to be both controversial and influential.

3 out of 5 stars The idealism is better than the realism .......2007-08-29

Intelligence is no substitute for integrity. In surveying the world - situation and the role three U.S. Presidents had after the fall of the Soviet Union Brezinski fails to give prominent place to one major development he himself had considerable responsibility for i.e. the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. It was he who as Carter's foreign policy chief - advisor supervised the fall of the Shah in Iran, and did nothing to prevent the rise of the radical Islamic regime there. He also helped put into place the Mujadeen in Afghanistan, and they have been a key element in the rise of Global Islam worldwide.
In this book he focuses on what he considers the missed opportunities of the U.S. after the fall of the Soviet Union. He is especially critical of the current President.
Brezinski does have interesting things to say about current American weaknesses including the balance of payments problem, the problem of a loss of kind of moral discipline.
His idea of the United States leading mankind to a new era of dignity and freedom is a good one. And for his 'idealism' expressed most fully in the final chapter the book is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars DR. BRZEZINSKI SHOULD BE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY.......2007-07-25

I feel strongly, that this book says what most rational people in the "world!" are thinking. It is pure and clear truth. It could have been a lot less disasterous for our country, if Dr. Brzezinski could have tutored bush/cheney/rice, on how to lead a great nation with "integrity, honor and some backbone." Can we find a way for a man like Dr. Brzezinski,(who was born in Europe/Poland), to run for President?! Fantastic book! I read it in one sitting.

4 out of 5 stars Second Chance: 3 presidents and the Crisis of American Superpower.......2007-07-21

Grim yet fairly non-biased assessment of the administrations since the fall of the wall. There is some hope at the end of the book, but it will take an extraordinary turn of events to keep America from losing its place in global stature.
His critical eye on the current administration is no nonsense and, sadly, accurate.

4 out of 5 stars J'Accuse.......2007-07-08

This is nothing more than a scathing indictment on eight years of GWB misrule.

To distinguish his indictment from other partisan rhetoric, ZB has placed his argument in a much wider and rational perspective. He has reviewed also the missteps of the previous two US Presidents in the foreign policy arena, and the lost chances of securing and cementing a true global leadership position for USA.

What is so different with the current regime is of course not just a matter of lost chances but colossal cost to US interests abroad. Not to mention lack of any significant progress in any key domestic agenda issues to balance it all.

ZB tries to make the argument at the end that all is not lost, and US still has a chance to regain its leadership position following certain steps.

His argument is not very credible though. He ignores the fact that US, as a nation, thinks and feels very differently than the one of 50s and 60s which put US on a moral path to global leadership. Things are indeed different, and second chance seems to be wishful thinking mostly.

Writing is excellent as expected, delivery and reasoning forceful and complete. Interesting reading for those of us contemplating the next chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant. A must read as we approach the future election they are boring us with ..........2007-06-28

I happen to hear this guy on Charlie Rose the other night and went out and bought his book. The book isnt as interesting as he is in an interview live but its well worth the read.

His analysis of the past three administrations is superb. It is balanced and I think offers great insight into the hits and misses of our leaders. He goes on to explain his views on the world post Russia and our missed opportunites. His close of post 2008 I would love to hear discussed by him and others.

An important book for this country. Get it and read it and act.

2nd Chance reconvenes the Women's Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven't picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew. --Barrie Trinkle

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-09-27

After the thrill ride of 1st to Die, I was anxious to read the next installment. But I'm glad that I didn't go out and buy the rest on impulse. I would've been even more disappointed, knowing I'd wasted the money... 2nd Chance lacked the excitement of the first. It is still a mystery full of suspense, intrigue, and unforeseen twists but it felt anticlimactic. We are introduced to Marty Boxer, Lindsay absentee father. Lindsay is mourning the loss of her partner/lover/boyfriend and has been off the police scene up until a horrific shooting in front of a church, where a little girl dies. She is brought back on the case and follows a string of seemingly racially-charged crimes. The perpetrator is still a surprise and there's the final twist at the end. Maybe since 1st to Die was my first James Patterson read, it felt more riveting. Here it seemed like it was following the similar plot points to the first. And now after just finishing the third, he seems to follow a pattern of throwing in red herring suspects, angry family matters, drama with in the Women's Murder Club, intense crime scene, and a twist at the end. There was also a lot more of the f- word which I found distracting and unnecessary - it has no purpose or meaning other than being a horribly crass and ineffectual way of expressing your thoughts. Overall, 2nd Chance is a fast paced, interesting mystery but not quite as good as the first. Hopefully the series doesn't continue going downhill from here. I would suggest getting these out of the library before you make the investment and are disappointed.

Maybe the new TV show will be better (Fridays at 8pm on ABC starting October 12, 2007).

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Chance.......2007-09-13

This was the second book in a series of 6, soon to be 7. I loved the books. They were easy to read and the story line moved quickly. I'm not sure how James Patterson does it but he is able to write from a woman's perspective so well, you forget that a man is writing it. As soon as I finished the 2nd one, I wanted to buy the remainder. In fact I am waiting on 3 and 4 from Amazon right now.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book.......2007-09-11

This book started as good and suspenceful as it ended.I liked how they introduced us to lindseys dad in this edition of wmc....book owl..

3 out of 5 stars 2nd better than 1st........2007-08-12

I really liked this one because the action and excitment was right there from the beginning and Patterson again keep me guessing right to the end. This is a fast read which doesn't require a lot of concentration, but it kept drawing me back to see what happens next. Men, don't let the fact that this about "A Women's Murder Club" keep you away because Detectives Jacobi and Cappy are always there to back up Lt. Lindsey Boxer. Also Lindsey's Dad, Marty Boxer, comes back from her past to help her in to solve this murder series.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Chance.......2007-07-29

This is an excellent series. I highly recommend it. Plot has good twist and turns and a very easy read. I bought this one first and liked it so much I decided to purchase the series. I have not been disappointed.

Book Description

Not since Betty Eadie’s Embraced by the Light has a personal account of a Near-Death Experience (NDE) been so utterly different from most others—or nearly as compelling.

In the thirty years since Raymond Moody’s Life After Life appeared, a familiar pattern of NDEs has emerged: suddenly floating over one’s own body, usually in a hospital setting, then a sudden hurtling through a tunnel of light toward a presence of love. Not so in Howard Storm’s case.

Storm, an avowed atheist, was awaiting emergency surgery when he realized that he was at death’s door. Storm found himself out of his own body, looking down on the hospital room scene below. Next, rather than going “toward the light,” he found himself being torturously dragged to excruciating realms of darkness and death, where he was physically assaulted by monstrous beings of evil. His description of his pure terror and torture is unnerving in its utter originality and convincing detail.

Finally, drawn away from death and transported to the realm of heaven, Storm met angelic beings as well as the God of Creation. In this fascinating account, Storm tells of his “life review,” his conversation with God, even answers to age-old questions such as why the Holocaust was allowed to take place. Storm was sent back to his body with a new knowledge of the purpose of life here on earth. This book is his message of hope.

"This is a book you devour from cover to cover, and pass on to others. This is a book you will quote in your daily conversation. Storm was meant to write it and we were meant to read it."

-From the foreward by Anne Rice

As I lay on the ground, my tormentors swarming around me, a voice emerged from my chest. It sounded like my voice, but it wasn’t a thought of mine. I didn’t say it. The voice that sounded like my voice, but wasn’t, said, “Pray to God.” I remember thinking, “Why? What a stupid idea. That doesn’t work. What a cop-out . . .”

That voice said it again, “Pray to God!” It was more definite this time. I wasn’t sure what to do. Praying, for me as a child, had been something I had watched adults doing. It was something fancy and had to be done just so. I tried to remember prayers from my childhood experiences in Sunday school. Prayer was something you memorized. What could I remember from so long ago? Tentatively, I murmured a line, which was a jumble from the Twenty-third Psalm, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the Lord’s Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and “God Bless America,” and whatever other churchly sounding phrases came to mind.

“Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. For purple mountain majesty, mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. Deliver us from evil. One nation under God. God Bless America.”

To my amazement, the cruel, merciless beings tearing the life out of me were incited to rage by my ragged prayer. It was as if I were throwing boiling oil on them. They screamed at me, “There is no God! Who do you think you’re talking to? Nobody can hear you! Now we are really going to hurt you.” They spoke in the most obscene language, worse than any blasphemy said on earth. But at the same time, they were backing away.

There isn't a person walking the earth who would not benefit from reading this book. I had seen Mr Storm on TV once or twice, back in the 90's, and was quite impressed. I wondered if he'd ever write a book about his experiences. I recently found he had, bought the book, and devoured it. It hit me like a locomotive. Don't hesitate, don't think twice, BUY this book. You will never forget it and you'll come back to it time and again in the future, I promise.

5 out of 5 stars Q: What is the best religion?.......2007-08-28

A: The one that brings you closest to God!

I had first heard of Howard Storm back in 2005 during an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Immediately I could tell of this man's sincerity from his deeply profound near death experience. This was truly the first NDE that, after listening to, had touched me so much that it caused another spiritual awakening in my life. His account of hearing voices telling him (by name!) to follow them down a corridor of darkness were more frightening than anything Hollywood could ever conjure up. These strange beings appeared, at first, to simply be in a hurry and behaved rudely and indifferent to Howard Storm. They urged him to move forward with them to an unknown destination of ever increasing darkness. As he continued on with them he became more aware of their malevolence which frightened him. These strange dark beings sensed his fear and they increased their behavior towards Howard. He finally stopped and said he would go no further. It was at this point that the real torment for Howard Storm began!

Can you imagine the horror he must have felt during all of this? Here was a self proclaimed atheist who was admittedly very selfish and used anger and rage to get what he wanted in his life. Now the sum total of his existence was living in a place of utter darkness being tormented by unknown beings and eaten alive! So much for being an atheist.

It was at this point Howard called out to God, a God he firmly didn't believe existed. As he called out to God these raging tormentors began leaving him alone but not without continuing their curses at him. In fact it enraged them even more. But as Howard kept calling on God finally he was all alone in this place of absolute darkness.

Out of this darkness he percieved a light coming towards him that finally engulfed him and picked him up. This light was the total antithesis of what he had previously experienced. Now he was being loved completely in an unconditional manner.

There's so much more to Howard Storm's experience. If you're even remotely interested in near death experiences then you absolutely MUST read this man's account. I would have given this 6 stars but they only allow 5! That's how much I loved reading this book. His story is one of total transformation.

In this hour of our planet's existence we need to be transformed as well. Read this book and you'll catch a glimpse of the ineffable love that emanates from God.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books ever.......2007-08-14

Howard Storm's book answers many questions in my mind about life, our purpose to live in this world, God, religion, and after life.
Although I am a Christian, I grew up in a Muslim countries and have many very nice Muslim friends that I love very much. I just cannot believe they will all go to hell just because they don't believe in Jesus.
Howard Storm explains clearly what God really wants from us, which is to love one another just the way He loves us. What a simple message, yet very true.
This book is the second most important book for me after the new testament.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing & Preachy.......2007-08-01

I was really looking forward to reading this book and was impressed with the first few chapters. However, Storm quickly got too preachy for my taste, and I actually found it quite repellent. The book started reading like a run-of-the-mill Christian sermon that went on and on. I had expected more. I would recommend Universe of Worlds by Robert Grant. Grant's book and workshop are where I had heard about the Storm book, which sadly turned out to be very disappointing. There is also very little on Hell in this book, though my impression had been that there was a lot more. That part of the book, though small, was interesting and well-written.

5 out of 5 stars very nice.......2007-06-26

Very nice testimony. As howard Strom went from being an atheist, and now is "all about evangelism".

he says some things that don't fit mainstream theology.

1. he says he saw life on other planets.
2. "The one that brings you closer to God" is just a common sense straight foward answer. We know that Jesus is the way, but whether you be religious or not, if you have not the bread of life, you have not life at all.
3. He uses the term "spiritual evolution" Although this makes since to many well scientifically educated people, to the average fundamentalist it wreaks of heresy.

A good testimony to those who can accept it, but very controversial.

Book Description

Millions of dogs and puppies are abandoned each year, resulting in a world filled with stray dogs of all breeds and sizes. Many of these strays come to a bad end, but every now and then a
stray dog is found by a compassionate person--whether picked up on the street or picked out from an animal shelter--and given a second chance. Some of these dogs are lame, blind, ill, or simply unwanted. These dogs are special. And so are the people who have chosen to give them a second chance. Found dogs seem to be especially grateful, loyal, and loving. They, who have sometimes been rescued from death’s door, become beloved members of families, giving affection, companionship, and solace. They become productive members of society as service dogs, therapy dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs themselves. Observers might
say that these dogs are lucky, but more often the people who have adopted them think that they are the lucky ones.
Second Chances is full of wonderful photos and words by people who have given dogs a second chance. Celebrities from Mikhail Baryshnikov to Oscar de la Renta and everyday heroes who have found dogs of all sorts--from sleek greyhounds
to scruffy mutts--share their tales of discovery and canine-human friendship.
Second Chances is a tribute to these extraordinary dogs and their people. It
is a testimony to the gift of love and salvation. And, in each case, it is difficult to say just who has saved whom.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to help homeless dogs find a loving family!.......2007-05-02

This book is full of profoundly moving stories, both heart-rending and heart-warming, and it is beautifully photographed. The author donates all the profits from her books to humane organizations to help rescue and rehabilitate abused and abandoned pets so that they can find new, loving homes. So if you love animals, buy it for yourself, your family, and your friends; you'll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Another book of happy endings..........2007-01-05

I purchased this book along with "Found Dogs: Strays Who Landed On Their Feet" and I enjoyed the happy ending stories just as much. As an employee at a local rescue group, I get to see on daily basis the many unhappy endings of strays. This book was a nice break from the many unhappy realities facing strays.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent sequel to Found Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet .......2006-04-11

I originally bought Found Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet and fell in love with the book. One of our kids Miles is a rescue dog and I can definitely relate to the stories in that book and this sequel.

This book is twice as big as the first and the stories are just wonderful. The stories are pretty much everyday people telling their tales of giving dogs a second chance at a great life. It made me feel great to know that there are others in this world who take care of their dogs as much and sometimes as nutty as my husband and I do :). If you've got a furry friend, this book is SO worth it - another 2 paws up from this pack!

5 out of 5 stars A Dog Lover's Joy.......2005-10-14

This book was given to a special friend that loves dogs so much she adopted one. Her dog brings her much happiness and their story could be included in this sweet book. I recommend it for all dog lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and heartwarming.......2005-09-07

The stories in this book are wonderful. The various backgrounds from which the dogs came from are heartbreaking, but the 'second chance' portions of these stories are very heartwarming. Every animal lover should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Kept Me Up All Night!.......2007-10-14

Harlan Coben out-did himself on this book! I literally didn't go to sleep until I finished. I had to know if I guessed the ending. (alas, I did not!) A tale of kidnapping, murder and full of twists, I absolutely loved it. Full of great narration and edge of your seat thrills. Coben uses the latest technology to give us mystery geeks a chance to stretch our imaginations as well. If you like suspense, this book won't disappoint. I also promise you'll recommend it to others as well.

Coben is fast paced, chock full of action and with story lines that you don't know where they're going - in a good way! Sort of "what's this creep got to do with it?" Then later you find out! Harlan Coben is sort of a Greg Iles with a great sense of humor! I love Iles - if you like the kind of action that does not let up, you'll LOVE a good Harlan Coben read. I've since read others and loved all, but this was sort of my "first love" by Coben.

4 out of 5 stars About the author!.......2007-10-13

Every book I've read, authored by Harlan Coban, would have to be
classified as excellent. This latest one, No Second Chance, is
another great read.

4 out of 5 stars fast read.......2007-10-09

I have read all of Coben's Bolitar series and 3 of his others including "no second chance". The story was a good read and kept things moving. Coben likes to put ONE MORE TWIST at the end of his stories. This one was worked, though not all of em do. I will continue to buy and read Coben

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-09-10

I've become addicted to Harlan Coban as a writer. I find his books always filled with unpredictable twists and turns!

4 out of 5 stars Added Practice.......2007-05-09

This has been a great supplement for my high school English classes. The kids love it and they get a chance to work and look at words differently. They are using skills they don't use on a regular basis. It's quite a challenge for most!

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY! A BOOK THAT WORKS FOR UPPER EL.......2002-01-24

This book is by far the most beneficial I have found for my upper elementary students struggling to improve their reading skills. It gives simple, step by step instructions for each of the activities and requires very little planning time for the teacher. EVERY child can succeed at improving reading skills, and the activities are appropriate for older students. They do not feel like they are doing 'baby' lessons- an issue I have dealt with when using other phonics books.

5 out of 5 stars Second Chance for Upper Grade Readers.......2001-06-03

This is an excellent choice for teachers who wish to implement a phonics program that can really work for upper grades. The book is divided into months. Each month there are activities ready to be used. The activities are categorized into four specific goals. Once you learn how to teach the four goals for the first month, you will be prepared to teach the same lessons again the next month, of course, using different words.

The phonics activities help students notice spelling patterns in words through clever activities that the older kids will enjoy. For instance, there are phonics lessons based on brand names! I highly recommend this program because it will give upper grade students the chance to learn how to spell high frequency words, to identify spelling patterns in big and small words, to monitor their spelling, and to use root/prefix/suffix parts of words to define and spell words.

This book is suitable for 4-8 grades. It includes lessons that will last for nine months of the school year. Teachers on year round schooling will also be able to use this book. Each lesson should take between 15-30 minutes, depending on the teacher's scehdule. This is an excellent book for upper grade teachers!

Book Description

The New York Times bestselling author delivers another winning novel—this time it's a tale of friendship and fate

Jane Green has become a nationally bestselling author with legions of fans through her novels about the true-life dilemmas of real women—their relationships, their careers, their loves, their triumphs and disappointments. In her latest book, Green tells the story of a group of people who haven't seen each other since they were best friends at school. When one of them dies in a terrible tragedy, the reunited friends work through their grief together and find that each of their lives is impacted in ways they could have never foreseen. Warm, witty, and as wise as ever, this is a story of friendship, of family, and of life coming full circle.

1 out of 5 stars Is this a preview copy??.......2007-10-16

I can't get past all the unbelievable errors in this book to even comment on the content. I should have given it away immediately after coming across the rookie time zone calculation error in Chapter One: The UK is five hours AHEAD of the Eastern United States, and therefore Holly could not have been writing from England in the middle of the night while Sarah was learning of the train accident that morning in New York. If it was the middle of the night in the UK, it would have been late evening in New York. Likewise, morning in New York would be early afternoon in the UK. This combined with numerous speaker errors (page 149, Holly instead of Olivia, for example) lead me to wonder if I got a preview copy instead of an edited one. Honestly, could no one afford an editor? That no one took the time to correct these glaring mistakes shows how little faith Green and her publisher must have in her readers' intelligence. I'll find someone else to read, thanks very much.

5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2007-10-01

This book keeps you reading! It definitely does not lose interest or drift off. The plot is a great story starter! Definitely read it!

4 out of 5 stars Not the typical Jane Green novel.......2007-09-09

Second Chance is a departure from the usual Jane Green novel. In an effort to have her chick lit characters mature- she writes about some serious adult topics. Second Chance details the relationships of several high school friends brought together after 20 years due to a classmate's tragic death. As the old friends get reaquainted, they evaluate their lives, go through mid-life crisis' and then magically all the storylines are given a silver lining by the end of the book. Second Chance makes me miss the lighter, happier Jane Green books like Jemima J and Mr. Maybe....

5 out of 5 stars Jane is great!.......2007-09-08

Another Jane Green beauty. Gals will love this book ... subject matter is a little more mature than Jane's previous works ... dealing with second chances in life rather than just your typical chick-lit. I found that this novel even made me think. Thank you once again, Jane Green! Keep 'em coming!

4 out of 5 stars A Terrific and Warm Story!.......2007-09-04

I have bought just about all of Jane's books because she writes such wonderful stories and this novel "Second Chance" is no exception. In this story of friends the author again drew me into the story and I could feel every emotion (even the laughter) the characters were experiencing. In my opinion it's an easy, feel good read. A great book to relax with on the beach.

Everyone Needs a Second Chance on the Course and In Life

Paul McAllister was a driven man. Ivy League educated and the founder of a multimillion dollar business, Paul was a success in everything but life-and golf. It only took one Pro-Am afternoon, one short putt, and one airborne putter to send his world flying in a different direction: a mulligan!

Golf's gracious do-over, a mulligan is the beginning of Paul's own second chance. Guided by the wisdom and advice of an Old Pro, Paul learns about priorities, about self-confidence, and about playing a good game both on and off the course.

Written in the appealing "parable" style of other best-selling books such as Who Moved My Cheese?, Gungo Ho! , and Whale Done! , golf pro Wally Armstrong and author Ken Blanchard condense decades of practical know-how into a simple book with an amazing message.

The Mulligan is a second chance to change it all, and improve both your life and your game!

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging and Educational.......2007-09-03

This is a tremendous book for all who play the game of golf and struggle with the game of life. It is been a great conversation piece with all that struggle with improving their golf game. The correlation with the way that we view life is amazing. This is a book that everyone should read!

5 out of 5 stars great introductory book for outreach!.......2007-07-28

This book is a winner for people who like golf and misunderstand the relevance of a personal relationship with God and Christ! It makes great sense and is a perfect read. Thanks Wally and Ken!

5 out of 5 stars Great words for life.......2007-06-11

It's amazing how much the gentleman-ly principals of golf apply to our day to day lives. If you're a golf fan, you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book!.......2007-05-25

A wonderful little book about life and golf. A little bit corny (in a nice way, I thought) and some people may be turned off by the distinctly Christian message, but I loved this book. Nice messages about relationships, forgiveness, priorities - and also about golf...and about not taking it too seriously! I'd highly recommend it. Special!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Double Lives, Second Chances........2005-02-02

Kieslowski changed my life. I watched RED first, then WHITE and Finally BLUE. I've never watched anything that moved me so. So much better than anything that comes out of Hollywood( except for the occasional Shawshank). Ann Insdorf does a great job narrating the DVD--in the 'extras' section of the trilogy. Based on her performance, I bought 'Double Lives'. I enjoyed her personal observations of the master at work. I loved her book. My only complaint is I wanted more analysis of the Trilogy(and the Decalogue). But she gives a fantastic job on the Trilogy DVD set. She's a true scholar of the sage.

5 out of 5 stars Blue White Red.......1999-11-30

I have been an enormous follower and keeper of Kieslowki's work since a fateful afternoon when I stumbled upon a showing of "Blue" several years ago. This of course came to a bittersweet juncture when K died in 1997. Regardless, this book accurately captures the the development of this extraordinary director... and writer. Insdorff presented some interesting insights in her writing amidst some oversights: the car in Blue was a Puegeott, not BMW, and no mentioning of "Blue's" Julie's accident interruption in court in "White". Although Kieslowki's beginnings and earlier works like his string of documentaries and "Decalogue" are crutcial to his foundation as an outstandingly brilliant director as showcased in the Three Colors trilogy, I wished more expoundment was made on the his final three works which is truly poetry in images.

The strength of love and family and the struggles and joys of Christian living weave together in this touching contemporary romance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not an Accidental Read at all!.......2006-12-04

I had not read much from this author except her 4 book series with Beverly LaHaye, but when our library had this one in large print, I just picked it up "accidentally" and decided to read it. I had not gotten into many pages when I was grabbed by the plot.

I did not even know there WAS a second chance series and I rather wondered how a secular book could be re-written sucessfully as a Christian Fiction book, but this one was wonderful.

When Wes first met Laney, he suspected her of being a stalker and/or kidnapper of children, and he had her arrested. His fears seemed rational until he heard her story. The child of Wes and his deceased wife Patrice, was adopted right after birth, and Laney, the birth mother had finally found them through illegal means. The story then unfolds of two people who have absolutely nothing in common except their love for one little girl, Amy. Through it all the ghost of Wes' dead wife Patrice hangs heavily over both their heads as well as Amy's.

I felt Terri Blackstock drew upon some incredible experience as an author to format and carry through with this suspenseful, love-hate story and the twists and turns which led to a very, very strange and almost unbelievable bond between Wes and Laney.

I wish to thank the author for re-writing this book and for using her talent for her new "boss", God. I am now searching for other second chances books by this author.

3 out of 5 stars Christian cotton candy.......2005-09-16

I like to support Christian authors, however reading this book was like eating cotton candy. It was easy to do, but left me feeling slightly sick to my stomach.

The character development was poor at best. The whole story was rather contrived and just not credible.

I spent an afternoon reading it, but somehow wish that I'd used the time more wisely.

5 out of 5 stars Another one for Terri Blackstock.......2005-07-20

As the first book in her Second Chances series, Terri Blackstock set the stage for her Shreveport, LA characters. I was instantly drawn to Wes & Laney's determination of making a family work. Of how their love grew for each other, but determined to make it God's will.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read with a light tone throughout.......2003-08-27

Adoption, romance, trust, and truth interweave in this book about second chances from the "Second Chances" series by Terri Blackstock.

Laney Fields returns to the town of her youth in a journey to recover the child she gave up for adoption several years before. The child's adoptive mother died recently of cancer, and her father, Wes Grayson, is struggling to make his construction company cover the costs of the medical bills.

Wes meets Laney as she surreptitiously takes pictures of his daughter playing at a playground. Suspicious and worried about a possible kidnapping, he calls the police and arrests Laney. From the beginning, Wes finds it difficult to trust the woman who may be trying to steal his child from him. They both realize that they're attracted to each other, but Wes can't trust Laney and she doesn't share his faith in Christ.

Their budding relationship is threatened by their pasts and their links to one little girl who carries the key that could bring them together or tear them apart.

In addition to confronting issues of adoption, Blackstock also suggests the consequences of relationships between Christians and non-Christians. The fact that this occurs at all suggests that Blackstock is not afraid of controversy. That a Christian man would knowingly enter into this type of relationship, no matter what the end results are, shows disobedience to God.

Throughout this book, the character of Laney is far more sympathetic than that of Wes. Wes, as a Christian man, shows far more weakness, sin, and stubbornness than Laney. He thinks through his decisions and makes purposeful choices about anger and distrust. Laney admits to confusion about religion, yet makes far fewer mistakes than Wes. She has one honorable goal, to love and care for her daughter. Unlike Wes, Laney's errors are accidental. Perhaps the non-Christian showing greater Christian attributes than the professed Christian is closer to reality than many would like to admit.

Nevertheless, many readers will find "Never Again Good-Bye" to be an enjoyable read with a light tone throughout. It is a fast-read with a clean storyline and happy ending that make it a great summertime read.

This book is a great, sweet story of overcoming grief and struggles and giving it all to God in love. I love this book and I would recommend it to anyone who want to read a the sweet story of Wes and Laney as they both go through trials and hard times for the love of their daughter Amy.
