Book Description
Written by an accomplished naval architect, this book shows the average boater how to safely weather the fiercest storm. Rough Weather Seamanship for Sail and Power arms readers with the knowledge they need to select and modify a boat for heavy weather; understand, track, and evade storm systems; and prepare for a storm in harbor, coastal waters, and offshore. It offers ocean-tested heavy-weather techniques for both sailboats and powerboats, practical advice on surviving worst-case scenarios, and decision-making exercises that can save lives.

i was impressed by the author's depth of knowledge and the fact he didn't purport to be a pompous know it all. he cites other mariner's experiences to make his point, and to make it a more lively read. I keep my copy nearby as a reference. think seamanship.

Clint Willis, the anthologist de l'extrème who brought us High, takes to the brine for a wide-lens collection of tales from the high seas in Rough Water. Much of it aims for the outer reach as portrayed in Sebastian Junger's Perfect Storm. Armchair navigators will thrill to the dangers and codes of honor that intermingle in the surf, as in Robin Knox-Johnston's stiff-upper-lip telling of his solo circumglobal sail: "I was in the lead and stood a slight chance of winning, and I felt that this would be worth giving an eye for, so I carried on." And like many anthologies, this one may draw readers to the full-length versions. Tony Farrington's harrowing account of a rescue in the South Pacific stands on its own, but others, like Steven Callahan's "Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea," beg for a full telling. Not recommended for a pleasure cruise. --Tipton Blish
Book Description
In this anthology, editor Clint Willis gives readers some of the best sea stories of all time. Included are excerpts from R. H. Dana's classic Two Years Before the Mast, a shipwreck survivor's 74-day ordeal aboard an inflatable life raft, an eyewitness account of the Titanic disaster, a dramatic rescue at sea in a Force-12 storm, a solo circumnavigation of Antarctica, and a one-man cruise through the Roaring Forties. Rough Water delivers page after page of high adventure amid gales, swells, surges, shoals, icebergs, fog banks, sharks, and mutineers.

Save Your Money.......2000-12-18
Save your money and purchase the REAL stories 'outlined' in this cheap book put together to ride the wave of The Perfect Storm. The collection of stories is nothing more than a collection of extended abstracts of the real stories. Many of the 'abstracts' are taken out of context and the reader does not get an accurate picture of what and why the nautical situation developed or how it concluded. Pass on this one.
An average anthology.......2000-07-15
This book is in a series put out by Adrenaline books and each book contains certain selections chosen by the editor. The selections are either excerpts from books, excerpts from diaries and journals, short stories, or an occasional essay. I look at how good the writing is, and how good the stories are.
There are 16 selections in this book. Half of them range from good to great, and the other eight are fairly poor. The writing is okay throughout, with some being more exceptional than others, but it's the stories that differ the most in quality. Six of them, whether written well or not, have virtually no story whatsoever or are very poor. As it turns out, the best stories in this book are also some of the better written. This is where the book's strength shows up. The selections introduce you to stories and books you may have never read and after reading some of the good selections, it makes you want to go read the books they were taken from. So I would mostly recommend this book to people who have not read much or any sea stories. It introduces you to a wide variety of sea literature. But otherwise I would only lightly recommend it by saying that everyone would find some selections that they really like.
Oustanding collection.......2000-01-10
Clint Willis has created a fascinating series of books with Epic, Climb, High, Wild, Ice, Rough Water, and The War. Each of these volumes presents the best literature about their respective subjects in a powerful cohesive manner. These books are a quick read, but intricate and spellbinding. I have given many of them to friends and family as gifts.
Smooth stories of rough water........1999-10-02
I have never known much about life at sea. I got this book because it was in the series of good collections by Clint Willis. I figured it would probably not be as good as his others, but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked as much if not more. Stories ranging between the plights of sea-men caught in huge storms to single individuals trapped in the solitude of an open sea. These stories are from today as well as from the distant past. If you're intrigued by the sea but don't have much knowledge of the world it creates, take a look at this book. It's wonderfully diverse and highly adventurous.
Humbling examples of humanity at its best and worst.......1999-04-07
These accounts by sailors captured in truly overwhelming situations form a microcosm of humanity in extremis--the reader can't help but compare his or her notions of his/her bravery, cowardice, fortitude, skill, intelligence, and sanity to those of the real-life characters in the anthology. Though the book is awash in humbling, awe-inspiring accounts of the almost mythic power of the ocean, its storms and waves and wind and rain are secondary to the humanity of the people in its grasp. The most compelling element of these stories is the will to survive of their characters, and the craftiness and real bravery employed in doing so (with a couple notable and harrowing exceptions). There isn't a weak selection here.

Book Description
WHEN THEIR PARENTS are killed in a car accident, Scott and his brother Gregg are sent to live with an uncle they never knew they had. Hurt, angry, and confused, they leave a comfortable life in the California suburbs and head to the remote Colorado Rockies, where their uncle runs a white-ater rafting company. Scott, forced to confront his loss and face an uncertain future, determines to make the best of a difficult situation. But his brother Gregg, burying his grief deep inside, begins to drift away from the only family he has left. As they become acquainted with the power and unpredictability of the river and begin to learn the skills of maneuvering the rapids, the brothers discover that it is harder than they ever dreamed to master the art of survival--both on an off the water.

Awesome Book.......2004-07-19
I recommend this book to any teenager or adult. It is generally a good book that teaches good morals. There are many conflicts and solutions in this book that make it fun to read simply because of the way the characters have different ways of handling them. You could also say that it is somewhat educational, as the author really knows what he's talking about when it comes to rafting. This reinforces the story and makes it more interesting than if the author didn't know anything about it. For example, "Well that's a matter of opinion. One reason people really enjoy paddle boats is because they're directly involved with the rafting. They help control where the raft goes. The success of the trip depends on each paddler doing his or her best. It's more of a personal challenge." Many people should like this book since it doesn't really have any boring spots like other books do. It proves to be a really a very fun book to read. For example there are some obnoxious things that the characters do to each other during the story, which can prove to be quite funny. "Hey Scotty, wake up!", "Get off me" Scott shouted to his brother. Also, you will be very surprised with the outcome of the story at the end of the book.
Absoluting Moving!!.......2004-05-03
Great book! It, too me, was by far S.L. Rottman's best books that I have read so far! Scott was lost and confused and seemed unwanted by both his Uncle and his brother Gregg but he finds himself and love at the end. This is a powerful novel and the ending will take you for a loop. I love this book and the S.L. Rottman for writing it. This is a MUST READ!
Rough Waters Review.......2002-11-22
I read Rough Waters; it is an ok book, but not the best that I have read. I would highly recommend this book to any one that enjoys adventure. The book starts out with the main characters, Scott and his older brother Gregg; have to move to Colorado to live with an uncle they never new they had. Their uncle owns his own rafting company on the Arkansas River. At first life is a little rough because they are still trying to get over their parents death. As it goes most things get better in life, this story gets better for the most part. Scott is left out by his brother because he is a lot younger than Gregg. One day during the summer Scott goes exploring in the back yard. He finds an old bike in a shed. Scott decides to go into town on the rickety old bike. In town he goes to the library because he is kind of a bookworm. At the library he meets a girl!! That is all I'm going to tell you about the book. If it sounds interesting to you, read it. I liked it; it takes a really good book to do that because I don't ever read. This is a really good book, ~ENJOY~!!!!!!!!
It wasn't that I didn't like the book..........2002-03-27
...it's just that the book was kind of cliche. Gregg especially. His parents die and he reacts by drinking, smoking, using drugs, and keeping bad company. It reminded me of one of those sappy 1930s movies.
And the ending didn't ring true. Gregg put his entire family and his friends in mortal danger, and one of them is most likely dead as a result of his actions, and he showed not one iota of remorse or regret. Then his good old Uncle Rocky has a talk with him and suddenly he's normal again. It didn't make sense -- Rocky has tried to talk to Gregg many times and Gregg never listened before; why should he do so now?
Scott on the other hand was a little too good to be true. The only "bad" thing he did in the entire book was go to that party with his girlfriend and drink underage, and it was only about half a glass. I could definately see where Gregg was coming from when he called Scott a goody-goody.
But despite my criticisms here, I did like the book. The rafting scenes in particular were very good. I just with the author could have rounded out the characters a bit more.
Terrific Read!.......2001-06-23
I teach middle school L.A. and plan to use this as a read-aloud next year...IF my students haven't all read it! Have a reluctant reader at home? Hand them ANY of Rottman's books! The rafting scenes have you riding along with the crew. Have fun! Terrific read!

Book Description
"I hate to lose. And what I really hate about it is that it takes exactly the same effort to lose as it does to win. So, if you're going to make that effort, why not make the effort to win?"
--Tom Whidden, three-time America's Cup winner, president of North Marine Group
America's Cup winner Peter Isler shows how the skills and strategies used in professional sailing apply equally well to competition, teamwork, and success in the world of business.
Some of the most prominent and successful CEOs and executives in America are sailors--and with good reason. In both business and sailing, only the best-led, best-trained, most highly motivated teams win. In
At the Helm, two-time America's Cup winner Peter Isler translates the secrets of success in the fast-paced world of grand-prix sailboat racing into a series of specific lessons that managers and businesspeople can apply to their day-to-day jobs. In the world of business and sailing, building a successful "team" takes years of planning, training, practice, and cooperation, with an absolute commitment to winning.
Liberally sprinkled with entertaining, insightful, and cautionary stories from the worlds of sailing and business,
At the Helm shows why it is essential to be able to change course quickly; how to "stack the deck" in your favor; how to plan for the unexpected. In addition, Peter includes a section on assessing your strengths and weaknesses, and offers suggestions on how to become a better "sailor."

Enjoyable Read.......2003-03-15
Overall I enjoyed the book. Different sections focused in on specific events that had occurred in the world of yachting and how the lessons learned could be applied to a business enviroment. While there may not be anything earth shattering in the book, it does demonstrate that there are a core group of values that can be universal.
Insightful!.......2001-02-24
Champion sailor Peter Isler (with help from business writer Peter Economy) shows how victory in sailing's America's Cup race demonstrates lessons that can be applied to success in business. The same practices that contribute to winning the sailing race also lead to business triumphs. Isler distills the principles of good sailing into seven key rules. These fairly familiar rules include making a total commitment, creating a strong team effort, being ready to change, leveraging every opportunity to your advantage, expecting the unexpected, pushing the limits and having the right inner attitude. However, the parallels between sailing and business make the book especially interesting, as do Isler's compelling examples from his sailing experiences. He also includes apt quotes from other sailors with business backgrounds. We at getAbstract.com (who are bravely resisting the urge to make ocean-going puns here) recommend this book not only to top executives, but also to general business readers, especially those who like sailing. Ahoy.
Great book on leadership.......2000-12-31
I really liked this book. I never realized just how much of a business sailboat racing is, or that it costs $60 million to run an America's Cup campaign. That's more money than most small businesses will ever see in a decade! Anyway, the authors have written a great book about some of the world's top businesspeople, who just happen to be some of the world's top sailors, too. Ted Turner, Roy Disney, Elizabeth Myers -- they're all here -- and they all have terrific lessons in business leadership to teach, and for us to learn. Buy this book! You'll learn a lot, and you'll have a lot of fun doing it!
If you don't sail you may not want to read it........2000-10-03
Well it had a lot inspiring teamwork and hardwork ethics sort of stuff that I see in so many sports/business books, but the importance of many events was lost on me. Interesting tales no doubt for sailors.
Sailing is analogous with life.......2000-04-29
This book solidifies many beliefs I have had throughout life that sailing prepares one well for all aspects of life, including the business world. Peter has selected a great group of successful businessmen who have great stories to tell. This book will be used as a gift to several of my clients come Christmastime.
As a Star sailor, my favorite story involves Malin Burnham retiring from a race for hitting a mark even though no one else witnessed the event. It cost him the Star World Championship, yet he never thought twice about doing it any other way. This is a great example of an era when ethics and a man's word was everything. We can only hope that it may become that way once again.
Thanks, Peter for a very good book.

Pretentious.......2004-07-12
This book is so pretentious I found it hard to believe anyone would publish it. I hated it too. The author spends so much time trying to be witty and urbane that the story suffers, and the readers also.
Hated it.......2000-03-30
I found the premise of this book to be totally unbelievable. Maybe I am too "cosmopolitan," but I find it impossible to believe that in the mid-1990s, the setting for this book, a father would kick out of the house and stop speaking to a daughter who, apparently at least 30 years old, becomes pregnant and decides to have the child. In addition, we are expected to believe the whole town condemns her and her "loose morals" and character deficits. We're also expected to believe this same man would leave his most treasured possessions to a man who has little, if any, respect and affection for him, and that he would suggest this same man to be his "illegitimate" granddaughter's legal guardian! What a bunch of hogwash.
Great book!.......1998-06-15
This was the first book I bought by Francine and I've read all of the others since. Very good author and an excellent place setting too. Highly recommend this one.
Francine Mathews creates compelling characters and stories ........1998-04-22
Francine Mathews creates compelling characters and stories set in the less glam side of New England's rarefied vacation island. The romance that twines through Death in Rough Water heightens the suspense.
