On a mission to map the migration of the peregrine falcon, Alan Tennant and his friend George Vose logged thousands of miles in a rattletrap Cessna. On the Wing is as much quest narrative as nature book, and the tale of the two men's voyage is unforgettable. At their first meeting, when Tennant suggested that they track a radio-tagged falcon by air, WWII vet Vose assessed naturalist Tennant with a keen eye. "Aviation takes intestinal fortitude, Mister. You were pretty green up there today. Calm air, too." Nevertheless, Tennant convinced the gruff pilot that the project was worthy, and they set off, soaring north over the dunes of Gulf Coast barrier islands. The falcon was just a beeping signal to them most of the time, but they became obsessed with its movements. In the small cockpit, they shared extremes of disappointment and elation as they dealt with bad weather, lost signals, run-ins with the Army, and equipment problems. They ended up posing as highway patrol officers, crossing international borders, and risking their lives in order to keep on the track of their wayward subject. Threaded into the funny and moving adventure story, Tennant scatters casual snippets of science--peregrine falcon biology, pesticide toxicology, and the little-understood fact of animal migration itself. The facts never get in the way of the fun, though--this is real Wild Kingdom action. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
In this extraordinary journey, Alan Tennant recounts his attempt to track the transcontinental migration of the majestic peregrine falcon — an investigation no one before him had ever taken to such lengths. From the windswept flats of the Texas barrier islands to the Artic and then south again into the Caribbean,
On the Wing provides a hilariously picaresque and bumpy flight.

I felt part of the experience.......2006-12-09
The straightforward account held me spellbound. I felt the author/reader had an honest heart and had no choice but to pursue his quest. The telling of his experiences was informative and interesting. I was captivated and wished the book hadn't ended.
On the Wing - High Drama over the Americas.......2006-03-30
What drew me to this book was its Title. I am a keen falconer and have kept various birds of prey for many years. This book combines the authors undoubted love and fascination for the natural world with a powerful personal drama - two mens quest to answer an ornithological question in the most direct way imaginable. Beautifully written at times Alan Tennant touches upon the very essence of what fascinates mankind about the Falcons it is a great read!
would have been nice to have some dates.......2006-02-06
The author seems to be striving for a timeless quality in his prose, but it is really annoying that there aren't any dates in the book. Did he take these trips in the 1970s? 1980s? 1990s? He says "we knew that in the future birds will be tracked by satellites", but when was that?
If you're an airplane pilot, you'll be horrified by the chances that these guys took in a really beat-up Cessna 172. They seem to have done some long-distance flying without being instrument-equipped or rated and naturally got themselves into some dangerous scrapes with the weather. The author seems to have no idea how unnecessary this kind of risk-taking is.
The book would have made a really great 25-page New Yorker magazine article.
Be prepared to be amazed.......2005-10-16
I loved this book! I have been following the Operation Migration program re-building the Whooping Crane population for years. This book adds a whole new dimension to the use of man made wings and bird migration. Alan Tennant writes in a way that the reader feels they also can see and hear the thousands of birds as he and George Vose fly through and with them.
I learned lots about peregrine falcons, but I kept my bird book handy and learned a lot about other birds too - including those amazing hummingbirds.
The sections describing the intense fear of the falcons in the bird population attested to their hunting prowess and keen vision and speed.
I am in awe of the birds and of the author's dedication and sense of adventure in trying to learn where they go and what they do on the way. As he says, satellites can tell where they go but not how or transmit the incredibleness of it all.
ON THE WING To the Edge of the Earth with the Peregrine Falc.......2005-03-28
I am halfway through this marvelous book, and am amazed that I have been in so many of the same places covered in the text. I flew a Jet Ranger helicopter on the North Slope in 1969, and came down through the Anatuvik Pass, after refueling on the Eskimo village's landing strip there. The adventures these two have in their old Cessna Skyhawk (which I took my first flying lessons in) are so reminiscent of any bush pilots perplexities. And, I remembered I endured them! One of my buddies in VN was from Miles City, and another had me Mule deer hunting out near the Big Bend where Vose has his strip and homestead. But, I don't need to fly like this anymore!!
What I did like about the book is how much Alan knows about the American West, almost on a Lewis and Clark experience, and more of the USA public should be aware of this landscape's history. He has a clever way of sharing ecological knowledge, and I wish more authors did. My only complaint so far about the book, is that Knopf really needed to supply a better copy-editor than it did. I need a few commas now and then! Many times I was into a paragraph, and tried to go back and see what was being said!
But, that is where the publishing world is today.... (Sigh)

5 star reviews are a mystery to me..........2007-06-06
While the read was enjoyable and well paced, I'm confused as to the abundance of 5-star ratings for this book. I felt the plot and identity of the Falcon was far too easy to pick out from very early on. Had I been younger and less apt to figure it out, I might have enjoyed it better. I give it a four-star rating though because Stefano was pure deliciousness. I do agree that this book would be excellent as a movie, and will nurse an unlikely hope that a talented filmaker will take it up as his next project.
Even Amelia Peabody would enjoy this one.......2007-03-28
This historical romance by 'Barbara Michaels' aka Elizabeth Peters, is set during the Italian Risorgimento of the mid nineteenth century. Francesca Fairbourn is the daughter of an impoverished English father and an aristocratic Italian mother. Her parents had eloped to England in a most romantic fashion, causing her to be disowned by her family. In true romance fashion the young woman died in childbirth leaving Francesca to be raised by her most impractical father. Shortly after leaving school at 18 Francesca's father dies leaving her totally alone in the world. At that dire moment a dashing young man comes to rescue her from a 'fate worst than death'. He turns out to be her half-cousin and has come to take her back to the family home in Italy. Once there Francesca finds herself embroiled in the Italian revolution, surrounded by anarchists, mercenary soldiers, spies, traitors and dashing romantic hero.
The novel has all the standard cliches of historical fiction and could have easily been just one of the numerous trashy examples of the genre well deserving the title of 'bodice ripper', but for the skillful hand of Michaels. The characters transcend the usual two dimensional character found in romances, the twists and turns of the plot are clever even though the reader will quite possibly solve at least some of the mysteries before the last few pages. The historical background is well researched and presented in an entertaining manner. It is, however, lacking the wry humor found in other works by this author (the Amelia Peabody and Vicky Bliss series).
For even an occasional reader of this type of fiction this one is a great find.
This book gave me 3 lovely dreams!!!.......2003-11-19
Oh yesss! Dreams of handsome, heroic, brave, strong, romantic, dashing, yummy, etc. etc. guys! I think I'd better reread it right now; maybe I'll get some more nice dreams. Ladies, you need this book even if you have to put up with a cruddy used copy from Amazon resales. (I'll bet someone's stolen the copy from your local library!)
I have read it a million times!!!.......2003-09-25
This book is fantastic. I bought it about a year ago, and I have read it a million times. I loved the mystery behind the "falcon", and the touch of romance all around. The characters are fascinating and keep you hooked. READ THIS BOOK! YOU WILL LOVE IT!
Why Couldn't Be MAde into A Movie? One of My All Time Faves!.......2002-10-09
I have collected and read many of Barbara Michaels' Books and this one is My favorite. Set during the Italian Revolution, it gives you a different perspective of Italian History, through English eyes. It was very well written, so much so, that you feel as if the excitement in the book, is very real!! The main characters are intelligent, witty, and daring. You cheer for them throughout the book. I wish this were made into a movie, so visual people, like myself, could indulge in it further. Whether you're a closet romantic, history student, or mystery buff --- you'll want to read it twice....like I did!!!

Brilliant Text! Illuminating Perspectives. Original Style........2007-01-30
Cynthia Voight has a rather unique style. Her writing can be a bit hard to pierce at first, because she makes use of an uncommon style of allegory. In this tale, we get a glimpse of what its like to live without an identity and to be given one. Through, literary fiction author's book provides a rare glimpse into the world of the masculine, the world of men and boys.
Though female, I couldn't help but think that the author did her research as much of what she writes thematically alludes to what real life is for those of us who are male. And though there are some clearly fictional elements, the truths in the tale ring universal.
As you can see, I didn't reveal any plot points, since I think one owes it to the reader to discover this on her own. But, I will say this: this book is not for everyone. If you want the traditionally scripted story where there's a clearly determined ending and everything is happy go lucky with the main characters as they struggle to obvious obstacles, then this book is not for you. In fact, it may be a bit frustrating. But, if you enjoy reading literature of all types and have an open mind to how a story is weaved together, then you'll enjoy this book. I surely did.
There's a Very Good Reason This Book Is Out-of-Print.......2006-11-06
This book was, sadly, one I'd been looking forward to for awhile. I'd had to finally track it down through inter-library loan, as it's long out of print and very obscure, so I was thrilled to finally get it. The book is the third book in Voigt's 'The Kingdom' series, which started with 'Jackaroo', continued with 'On Fortune's Wheel', and then was concluded with 'Elske: A Novel of the Kingdom'. Of these books, 'Wings' is the only one that is out of print. I wondered about that, and thought it might be that, of all four books, it is the only one with a male protagonist. But I was eager to read it to compare it to the other books in this fantasy series. Alas, it was pretty much a textbook case of 'How Not To Write a Novel', or more precisely, 'How To Completely Alienate Your Reader By Defying Recognized Rules of Storytelling'.
The novel follows the main character (who has NO NAME for the first 1/5th of the book, reading 'He said', 'He then', 'He did' gets REAL old) as he struggles to succeed, following him through his life. We get to know his hopes, his dreams, his expectations, and feel we know him rather well. Then, 3/4 of the way through the book, he dies tragically. Now, I'm not saying all stories should have happy endings. Most non-expurgated fairy tales don't. But you don't kill off the narrator in the middle of the novel. It's the equivalent of reading, "And then, Reader, I died." And the rest of the book suddenly shifts to the perspective of a whole different character, one who had been a servant and a silent supporter to the dead hero, a sort of silent Samwise Gamgee with no visible personality. We know nothing about him, and it's too late, this far into the book, to bring any characterization or depth to this character. If the author wanted to go this route, she could have done it by either writing the novel from a distinctly distanced omniscient point of view (i.e. not telling the whole story from one character's limited point of view), or by telling the whole book from the point of view of the servant whose actions close the book. When she didn't do this, it really alienates the reader like a slap to the face. It feels like you're watching the original Star Wars trilogy, and in Return of the Jedi you see Luke Skywalker die fighting Jabba's soldiers on Tatooine. As he dies, he asks his friend Han Solo to finish his 'mission' and confront Darth Vader for him, and Han agrees to do so. Never mind that Han isn't a Jedi, and has no such training. Even if Han agrees and completes the movie doing so, it would feel odd, wouldn't it? The whole trilogy was set up as the story of Luke Skywalker, as his life's journey took him from his humble beginnings, as he discovered his future and his gifts. To kill him off right before he reaches his destiny just feels WRONG. Would the series be the huge cultural hit it became with such an ending? I highly doubt it. 'Cause there are some things you just DON'T DO as a writer. Even Lucas knows that.
It's a shame, since I think it's obvious Voigt had a lot of important things to say about the societal roles of men and women in this book, but her 'message' is completely overshadowed by the reader's shock and dismay at the way the story slaps you in the face with the ending. A slight point-of-view shift would have been all it would have taken to make this story work. Some editor definitely dropped the ball with this one. Too bad. But despite that, this book is worth reading for fans of the other 'The Kingdom' novels, since this book really ties 'On Fortune's Wheel' and 'Elske' together. In fact, a lot of 'Elske' doesn't become clear until you've read 'The Wings of a Falcon' first. So, it's worth checking out for fans of 'The Kingdom' novels, but for anyone else, not so much. There's a very good reason this book is out of print.
The Lord of the Rings it's not, but still fantastic!.......2004-05-28
The Wings of a Falcon is the third book in a series of highly acclaimed heroic adventures that began with Jackaroo and continued in On Fortune's Wheel. This book was written by Cynthia Voigt who is a renowned author of books that revolve around the heroic theme. Although relatively difficult at places, The Wings of a Falcon shouldn't be missed by anyone who is remotely interested in a book that illustrates friendship, courage, and loyalty.
As a boy with no name, no family, and no love, he only knew how to obey and stay loyal to the sixth Damall. Under cruel and unreasonable treatments, he remained strong and eventually earned the honorable position of seventh Damall. Just when everything is set, he escaped the Damall's island with his only friend Griff, the falconstone called Beryl, and a name. From war torn cities to steep steps of the snowy mountain, he and Griff conquered numerous challenges and after each exhausting day, their hearts slowly began to unite as one. When fate brought them to the mysterious Kingdom, a devastating tragedy struck and Griff's responsibility and unwavering loyalty will be severely tested.
The book is very well written and it is obvious that the author imputed a lot of energy on small details that would enhance the final product. There are definitely enough cleverly used sensory details to give readers a clear picture of the subject, and even better, the sensory details never bogged down the pace of the book and readers would never feel overwhelmed by hordes after hordes of figurative languages. The characters featured in this novel all have distinct personalities and complex ambitions, and at no where in the book did the author just simply introduces a character. All characters came into their roles mysteriously and some character's true backgrounds are never revealed. The different parts of the book are all connected to each other seamlessly, and the book flows along smoothly. With crystal clear sensory details and complex character build-ups, the Wings of a Falcon also has a twisting plot that will puzzle and surprise even the most advanced readers.
It is hard trying to pick weak points from such a wonderful book, but The Wings of a Falcon isn't perfect. The most evident flaw is probably the fact that the book is a bit too difficult to understand at times, and the twisting plot would constantly confuse readers. Some of the things in this novel should be filtered out to make it more exciting and less repetitive, and some moments should be emphasized more to make it stand out and memorable. The author could have added some funny moments to make this book more entertaining and the unexpected ending could depress and disturb some readers. But these are just minor pitfalls that are barely worth mentioning in front of all the strong points of this book.
Overall, The Wings of a Falcon is a fantastic book that tells about courage, friendship, and loyalty. While it definitely has some problems, its unparalleled depth, engrossing details, and clear descriptions are more than enough to overshadow it. With a whopping of nearly 500 pages and about 30 chapters, it will be both a long and entertaining read. Some of the strong points mentioned above could be view as weak points and the weak points could be viewed as strong points. It all depends on what kind of reader is reading this book. In the end, this epic novel is strongly recommended to everyone who will not get easily confused and depressed by disturbing masterpieces.

Sadly disappointed.......2003-08-15
Having read On Fortune's Wheel and Jackaroo, I expected great things of Voigt. Instead I was reading about a boy with no name, no feelings, and a disappointing ending. In fact, I was more then disappointed at that 'unexpected twist'. You really, really should never do that to a main character, without some very special back-up characters, which Voigt never developed. I was saddened by such a poorly written book.
Griff is never fully developed, and so when POV changes, you can feel little or nothing for him, and I at least, lost interest in the story and only dragged myself throught it because I hate to leave a book half-way through.

Remarkable Book.......2001-09-26
"The Falcon's Wing" is Dawna Lisa Buchanan's first children's novel. It's about a twelve-year-old girl named Bryn Cameron who moves from Circleville, Ohio, to Kenmore, Ontario, Canada, with her father. Bryn's mother has died recently and her father and her are coming to live with her mother's sister (Aunt Pearl) and her aunt's fourteen-year-old mentally handicapped daughter (Winnie) on their farm.
Bryn's new family takes some getting used to. She soon learns how nonexistent her mother's relationship had been with her sister: Aunt Pearl didn't know Julia (Bryn's mother) had died, or that Julia had a daughter. Even though her aunt welcomes them in to her home, she doesn't show a lot of interest in them at first and has some difficulty in showing affection. But Bryn knows Aunt Pearl isn't a cold woman; she's witnessed how compassionate her aunt can be when she's around Winnie.
Making friends in the small town soon becomes another obstacle, especially with her cousin tagging along (who some have nicknamed "Snake Girl" because of her slanted eyes). Despite their rudeness and jokes, Bryn still hangs out with the local kids (Cecil, Rita, Ed, Rachel, Virginia), and even saves one of them from drowning in the Castor River.
By the end of the book, Bryn is able to cope better with her mother's death, Rita (the bully), and her aunt and cousin. However, her father still seems to be a little distant. The only chance she has of understanding his loss of his wife is by reading the letters he still writes to Julia.
"The Falcon's Wing" is one of my favorite young adult books. The main characters are believable and I could sympathize with Bryn. The reading level is for ages 9 - 13, but I would recommend this book to anyone interested. Another book I would recommend is "The Summer of the Swans" by Betsy Byars (mentally handicapped family member).
The first really interesting book........2001-09-04
This had to be the first really interesting book that I had ever read. I got the book on a whim and couldn't put it down once I had opened it. No book had ever moved me the way this one book had. The way that Bryn eventually opened up to her Aunt Pearl and cousin Winnie. How she showed that there was nothing to fear or laugh at about a child with Down's Syndrome. Everything can trully work out if you give it time. A distant father can come back out of the shelled he sealed himself in. A cousin can learn to accept their cousin for who they are. And a neice can realize that a seemingly bitter aunt can be one of the best friends that you could ever ask for.

Crisp dialogue, plausible scenarios, and a page-turning, hair-raising climax make this work a must.--Publishers Weekly

A Wonderful Story Of Bomber Pilots In WWII.......2001-06-29
You can tell from the detail that the author actually flew bombing missions during the second world war. You feel as if you are right in the aircraft as the author details what aviation warfare was like from the German side and from the American side. The characters are solid and the plot fascinates. I must get the follow-up book, "Hawks." Can't recommend this too highly.
Great adventure in an important time in American History.......1998-03-02
The author puts you in the air with the rest of the crew and makes you live the drama of the air war over Europe during WWII. Great story. Great writing. A book worth keeping after you have read it.

Book Description
On Falcon's Wings is the heart-breaking story of five teenagers in Prague, Czechoslovakia, during World War II whose lives are unalterably changed when resistance commandos assassinate Gestapo general Reinhard Heydrich in 1942. In the tragic aftermath of the assassination the boys are kidnapped by German soldiers and sent by troop train to the Eastern front to dig anti-tank trenches, find safe passage through mine fields or perform whatever tasks their captors order them to do. Realizing that they will most likely be killed by the Russians or by the Germans or by accident, some of the teenagers manage to escape. During their perilous trip home, the boys are rescued by partisans, aided by sympathetic Ukrainians, and brutalized by Nazis. Scarred and traumatized, the boys who survive the harrowing journey back to Czechoslovakia must search for their loved ones and rebuild their lives in war-ravaged Prague.
Customer Reviews:
Great story revolving around a rarely revealed part of WW2 .......2005-05-14
On Falcon's Wings is terrific story telling. The story and characters bring to life a period and place I knew very little about -- despite being a World War II history aficionado.
Historical enlightenment aside, this is simply a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Engrossing.......2005-04-23
This book drew me into a relationship with each character and ultimately I was living their anxiety-ridden, bleak existance with them every step of their journey. Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read.
Real and Relevant.......2005-04-11
If you like historical fiction, you'll love this fast-paced, compelling story about five teen-age boys whose lives take a disastrous turn during the Nazi occupation of Prague. The author very wisely chooses to focus on teenagers whose naive, impulsive, and rebellious nature is in constant tension with the Nazi troops. Their journey reveals the absolute cruelty of war and the psychological domination that occupation gives the occupiers -- not unlike what we've recently witnessed at Abu Ghraib prison.
The characters are so real and so beautifully drawn that I became very involved with them. I struggled with them as they weighed the risks of fighting back or submitting. Those who break through the barrier of fear pay a high price as heroes or martyrs.
I read the last 125 pages in one sitting because I had to find out how it turned out for the five boys I had become so fond of. This is a five star read -- one you won't soon forget.
Moving, riveting historical fiction.......2005-03-04
"On Falcon's Wings", set in World War II Europe, moved me more than any book in recent memory. The author's obviously extensive research certainly paid handsomely helping him bring faithfully to life a setting and historical period fraught with powerful emotions and grave dangers. The portrayals of the settings, scenes, and characters all ring very true; there wasn't a false note anywhere. The drama builds steadily developing the backgrounds and personalities of five Czech teenagers seized by the Nazis and transported toward the German military front in Russia. The tension mounts quickly as the youths struggle for survival and attempt to escape and elude their captors. At times it becomes almost impossible to lay this book down. "On Falcon's Wings" is a timely reminder to us all of the devastating effects an empire building, totalitarian government can have on its most humble and righteous citizens and subjects.
Gripping and Insightful.......2005-01-08
Umpleby's story maintained a strong feeling of tension from beginning to end. It gripped my attention and interest from the very outset and never let go. I was particularly impressed by the keen insights provided of the reality of the human experience of war, of one's copuntry being occupied and dominated by a ruthless foreign power, of the heights and depths of behavior to which otherwise ordinary people can rise or fall. I got so involved with the Czech boys frantic efforts to survive that I nearly screamed out loud to Pavol at times,"No!No!No! Don't do that!!!" It's clearly a five star read for me.
