Great book.......2007-08-09
I find John Lyon's Bringing up Baby very informative! The pictures do a great job illustrating each lesson. I just purchased a filly, and I want to give her the best life possible. I think by following John's techinques you can't go wrong. His videos are great too!
Sometimes we forget to use common sense when working with horses, and if you pay attention to them and learn to properly communicate, you will find a great new enjoyment with your horses!
baby steps.......2007-06-27
this book is great for illustrating kind, consistent lessons to educate yourself and you young weanling. if you want to establish a good relationship, and have your youngster become willing, accepting and to like you, then buy this book.
Concise, easy to follow, great book!.......2007-06-17
This is a great book for those who need to teach a baby, an ex-racer, or any horse the essential basics. Each lesson begins with a description of that you're going to do and why. There's also a list of needed equipment (all of these lessons are to take place in a round pen or arena with the corners "rounded" off). Step-by-step, Lyons takes you through the lesson, providing a picture with each step and a description of what you are doing. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to teach any horse basic ground manners.
John Lyon's Bringing Up Baby.......2007-05-13
Although the methods do not work 100% on all youngsters, it gives the trainer a base to work fro. From there, common sense and knowing the horse you are working with comes into play
Bringing Up Baby.......2007-02-23
John Lyon's Bringing Up Baby is one of the best manuals for early training. The book is well written and organized. It is easy to use when looking for solutions to training problems and the steps to good solid training for your young horse! Superior book!

Cavalletti: The Schooling of Horse and Rider over Ground Poles.......2006-11-12
This is an excellent book for those looking for a systematic way of including cavalletti in their youngster's training. Ingrid and Reiner give excellent explanations and also provide photos/drawings to further describe what they are looking for. I have used this method in training my own youngsters with good results. One caution however, it doesn't matter how good the information is if the person applying it is unskilled or inexperienced.
Great visual aids .......2005-09-21
I couldn't put this book down! Chocked full of color photos makes this pleasing to use and wonderful to leaf through for ideas and an excellent reference. A good reminder of sound, basic training principles. A great addition to any library for dressage, hunter or jumper riders.
A must have - inspirational!.......2004-10-31
I just love this book. I've never been so inspired to make a trip to Home Depot - I couldn't wait to build my own cavalletti and get out there and give it a try. Directions for building your own can be found here: www.texashorsemansdirectory.com/thdcav.htm This book provides an excellent introduction to working with cavalletti and is a must have for the English rider. Easy to read, well illustrated, great schooling plans and the gymnastic jumping section at the end is an added bonus. FUN, FUN, FUN!
Cavalletti for everyone.......2003-03-24
I'm not a brave jumper and this book has really encouraged me to incorporate more ground poles and cavalletti into my regular training regime.
My main interest is dressage but my enthusiasm for trying more pole and jumping work has been set alight by this book. They cover everything from the most basic information like boots for your horse, distances for different gaits and even how to adjust side reins correctly, right through to patterns and techniques to keep things interesting.
The language used is simple, conversational and incredibly useful. Each topic - lunging, straight work over poles, gymnastic jumping etc - is addressed in detail with troubleshooting solutions provided for common problems. There are sample work schedules and cavalletti patterns for most objectives. This is a true working book that will be valuable to all levels of rider.
Awesome training aid.......2002-04-25
This book helped me immensely with training my 3 year-old standardbred and 4 year-old thoroughbred. I would recommend this book to anyone who is training their horse(s) on their own. It gives great detail in instruction and the lessons explained really do work on young and older horses.

Perfect for all horse enthusiasts.......2000-07-22
This book is perfect for new and experienced horse people. It is filled with a great deal of real world instruction. I've read several intructional books and this had to be the easiest to follow.
Something for everyone.......2000-03-27
This book is a must reference for beginners through advanced horse people. It is clear and concise with enough detail to provide insights for the advanced person, yet it is not written in such a manner that the beginner feels overwhelmed. This book is definately worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
THE book on ISD.......2007-03-20
If you're going to read only one book on instructional systems design (ISD), read this one. It explains every aspect of the ISD process thoroughly and clearly, and comes with a CD of exercises to help you check your understanding and practice what you've learned. I've read a lot of books and articles on ISD in my 20+ years in the profession. Believe me, this one is the best, hands-down.
A Great Design Tool.......2007-02-10
I'm a person who is new to instructional design so it took me a while to understand all the terminology. Once I cleared that hurdle, I found this book to be a very simple and straightforward blueprint of the ISD process, which was developed by the military during World War II.
Great ID book for those new to the field.......2005-08-29
I found this book to be straight forward in its explanation of the ADDIE model of instructional design. It breaks it down by first introducing an overview of the model (the concept) followed by close examination of each component.
Each chapter is concluded with an exercise that demonstrates what was taught and then an opportunity to apply what you learned to exercises on your own.
I recommend this as a great "starter book" for anyone interested in the instructional design field.
For class-good.......2005-08-06
This book is put together very well and reads very easily. It is a little dry in some places but I am a teacher and reading it for my Masters program. But, I will say this: For not knowing anything about ISD going into the book, it has taught me quite a bit and I am able to understand without having to reread the same paragraph twice.
Great for a class or for you ISD designers, beginning or advanced.
The Best introduction to ISD.......2004-05-29
Many writers have been debating whether Instructional Systems Design (ISD) is dead or is still a viable method of designing and implementing training programs. The reality, however, is that even if ISD is no longer as wide-spread as a decade or two ago, it remains the basis for most of the other 'models' of training design and implementation and is the foundation upon which e-learning was built.
As a primer on ISD, this is the best book you're ever likely to come across. Written in a clear manner with tons of useful and practical ideas and guidelines, it is essential reading for both the novice and experiences trainer. As the other reviewers have said, if this is not on every trainer's desk in your organization, then it should be.
The book is Divided to Four Sections:
1: The Basics of ISD - a short introduction to the model and the concepts of ISD.
2: Working through the ADDIE Model - Takes through the steps of the ISD process in more detail and with lots of exercises.
3: The Basics of Design and Lesson Plans
4: Tips for Success - This is probably the most useful part of the book with numerous ideas and suggestions to avoid common pitfalls and to enhance the process. It also has a special section on e-learning that I found quite useful as an introduction to the topic.
Overall, this is an excellent book and highly recommended along with Lou Russel's "Project Management for Trainers" which complements this book but focuses on the operational aspects of managing and implementing the Training project.
Book Description
For more than a century the field of education has struggled - largely unsuccessfully - with how to make the preparation of school principals both intellectually rigorous and deeply connected to the world of practice. Principal Training on the Ground describes a new and powerful solution to this problem - one that will reshape conventional views of principal preparation, and one that brings schools and universities into promising new partnerships. School and university administrators should read this book.
- Richard F. Elmore, Gregory Anrig Professor of Educational Leadership, Harvard Graduate School of Education
The training of new principals described in this clear and concise volume has come alive in the public schools of New York City. Many of the fine principals I have hired consider Sandra and Liz the masterminds behind the professional preparation that has enabled them to become confident and competent school leaders. This is an essential text in the study of educational administration.
- Shelley Harwayne, Superintendent New York City Public Schools
As our nation faces a severe principal shortage, Sandra Stein and Liz Gewirtzman offer a timely breakthrougha detailed overview and explanation of a principal training model that can easily be implemented through school-university partnerships.
The authors base their book on the Aspiring Leaders Program (ALP), a collaboration of several New York City school districts and the School of Public Affairs at Baruch College, The City University of New York. The program takes a unique approach to principal development that integrates the craft knowledge of master practitioners with the theoretical knowledge and research of college professors. Stein and Gewirtzman provide not only a provocative rationale for radically transforming school leadership development through such a program, but also a practical guide to get there through a model that includes:
- systems of accountability
- cycles of continuous improvement
- responsiveness to local realities
- delivery of a rigorous curriculum
- instruction as the center of the principal's role.
To address the problem of quality leadership in education, administrators and government policy makers can find no more effective approach than the one offered here.

Charlotte thinks she's going to a remote tropical island for a holiday with her boyfriend. So it comes as something of a surprise when she finds that the island is a correction centre - presided over by a dark, handsome figure known as the Master.
Customer Reviews:
A good B&D story.......2000-10-09
Charlotte is a pampered, arrogant priviledged woman who is taken to a mysterious island were slavery is legal. She thinks it's all for a holiday with her boyfriend, but in a very short time she is taken before the ruler of the island, stripped naked, bound, spanked and is then forced to begin training as a sex slave. Charlotte resists her training throughout the entire book and her will is never broken. She is constantly disobedient and she is constantly punished. She finds herself (reluctantly) aroused by being made helpless and punished, but she will not admit it to her masters or fellow slaves. At the end of the book she's still in the same situation as she was around the beginning. She's still fighting her masters and mistresses and she's still being heavily punished. The only big difference is that her boyfriend has left the island and will not be coming back for her, for another 12 months. I would have liked to see Charlotte finally give into one of her masters or mistresses. Or at least develop a friendship with one of the other slaves. But Charlotte is determined to be cold and stubborn and never change throughout the book. Perhaps Sarah Veitch would be kind enough to write a sequel, where Charlotte becomes more obedient and warms up to her new mistress in Camp Two.

One of the best practical books ever on fighting sin.......2006-03-19
This is book is terrific! Written in a lively manner, Jay Carty specifically in detail gives practical Biblical suggestions for "stomping on" sin. The "polar bear alert" alone is worth the price of the book. If you are a Christian and you think you already know "the basics", this is a great "next step" book on how to fight the daily temptation we all face in our lives. Jay is a former center for the LA Lakers and does not write from the viewpoint of a stuffy scholar. I encourage you to buy this book!
This book is not passive reading!.......2005-12-30
In Basic Training for Spiritual Combat by Jay Carty, readers learn to overcome areas in life where the devil has gained a foothold. It focuses on such specific struggles as controlling anger, resisting sexual temptation, and establishing God-honoring priorities. The author makes good use of humor, using it like seasoning in a dish, while still discerning when to be serious. There are plenty of illustrations, parables, examples, lessons from the Bible, and other helpful bits that make his major points easy to understand.
What's unique about this book is that it's not passive reading. Readers will find numerous agreements to make between themselves and God. There is, for example, a chapter titled, "It's Time to Thump the Devil's Rump," which contains prayers to pray that invoke the power of God, demolishing the strongholds the enemy has built in one's mind. Those uncomfortable using a prayer that someone else has written, can still use these prayers as guides for original prayers. Occasionally the author advises to stop, put down the book, and pray over a certain matter. The writer wants to make sure that readers don't just blitz through his book, all the while neglecting the One who has the power to make the changes in your life.
Overall, the book was interesting and informative. Its only real weakness was the occasional use of innuendo and slang, which makes the book hard to understand in places. That said, anything significant is communicated clearly and with a bit of humor, making this a worthwhile book. The style is most appropriate for the ages of thirteen to thirty, but is still a great reading experience for anyone. -- Cameron Miller, Christian Book Previews.com

Martial Arts Injury prevention.......2006-08-21
This book is in the category of "must have" for every Black Belt and dojo-dojang owner. The thorough coverage of pre-workout stretching, diet and injury care is something that senior belts in every school should know. While I learned much of the contents of the book in my years practicing Tae Kwon Do, this book makes a very good quick reference, with great pictures of just how to treat most of the common injuries.
Very highly recommended.

the classic.......2006-08-09
my grandpa read it in WWII during his training as a bomber's flight engineer, my dad read it during his commerical pilot training in the 70s...and ive pretty much memorized it for when it comes time for me to again 'slip the surly bonds of Earth'
its an excellent, easy to understand thorough introduction to the principles of flight, meteorology and navigation
if you are interested in flight training itll probably be required for ground school so why not get it and read it now, the price is a fraction of its value
Easily understood, superlative content.......2005-03-25
I'm a book freak: I have several--some would say too many--books on every subject I'm interested in. I have Kershner's material, I have the Thom series (great set, by the way!), and I have the funny but instructive book by Rod Machado.
These all have their different methods of knowledge transfer, mostly good. However, I find some topics improperly covered; a situation I can only attribute to language. These authors know what it is they are talking about but transferring that knowledge via the written word is difficult. One such topic, for example, is altimeter settings. With the possible exception of Trevor Thom, most of the others didn't do as good a job as they could have.
From the Ground Up is small (physically) by comparison to the manuals by Machado and Thom but it does such a good job of precisely and knowledgeably covering all the topics a prospective--and currently active--pilot needs to know that the reader does not notice! How refreshing. Reading the sections covering altimeter settings, the author(s) simply and quickly impart the essence of the topic so that I am thoroughly satisfied I completely understand.
I couldn't recommend a better book on the subject--except again for anything by Trevor Thom.
awsome awsome awsome.......2003-12-30
I have not quite completed reading this book because it is not necesairie for my current training. I am 15 years old and a royal canadian air cadet and take some courses through my squadron so I can learn to fly an dthis is the book we use but make sure you have the rite edition I got stuck with an american addition wich is different than any other edition because the laws are differnt and the air space regulations are different other than that this has been an awsome book to study with and I suggest to use a highliter to highlight important info that you could easily reffer to another good thing is the test in the back is very helpful. Good luck.
