Book Description

This is the first book on the market focusing specifically on the topic of geotechnical earthquake engineering. The book draws from the fields of seismology and structural engineering to present a broad, interdiciplinary view of the fundamental concepts in seismology, geotechnical engineering, and structural engineering.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Franklin A. Moore (Geotechnical-earthquake engineer).......2007-07-23

To my knowledge this is one of the best (if not the best) book on the specific subject of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. The author manages to present in a concise and clear manner an overview of the latest on earthquake engineering, and then proceeded to the geotechnical engineering field covering all the main topics, including examples and problems of applications that complements and clarifies the subject. As a geotechnical and earthquake engineer I find this book to be an invaluable reference for a student or a practicing civil engineer.

3 out of 5 stars The best introduction to geotechnical earthquake engineering.......2004-03-01

Yes, this is an excellent overall introduction to the geotechnical aspects of earthquake engineering. We use it regularly in practice. The sections on seismic hazard analysis and seismic slope stability are particularly strong.

4 out of 5 stars the best available.......2003-04-03

Topics in geotechnical earthquake engineering is one of the
most active fields and always in rapid changing. Only with
several years off, the book by Professor Kramer is going to
be out-of-dated. Yet it is the BEST book available so far on
this topic.
I found the information in this book is useful for learning and
understanding, yet for the most excellent descriptions, we
have to refer directly to the scattered publications of
Berkeley School (i.e. Prof. H.Seed, R. Seed and J. Bray et al).

5 out of 5 stars good references.......2002-06-17

This book is good for graduate level. It contains lots of principles and applications in this field. References listed in the book are very useful as a starting point in geotech research.

1 out of 5 stars NOT A WELL WRITTEN TEXTBOOK!.......2002-04-09

I am a graduate student studying geotechnical engineering and have used this book in my class. The problems at the end of each chapter are extremely difficult to do given the information in the textbook. I found myself constantly going to the library to attempt to get extra information which was almost always impossible to find. In fact, after spending hours on one problem, I talked to my professor about it and she spoke to the author of the book and he realized that the problem was not even possible to solve! I completely wasted hours of my time trying to solve it and it couldn't even be solved! Also, when a symbol for a constant is mentioned in the book, it is very difficult to go back and scan the pages to find out what the symbol stands for and what the correct equation is. Maybe the author can include a summary of symbols and what they stand for at the beginning of each chapter.

I would not recommend this textbook although I know that it is one of the few Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering textbooks out there.

    The worst vacation ever!

Thirteen-year old Kyle thought spending a vacation on the Oregon coast with his family would be great. He'd never flown before, and he'd never seen the Pacific Ocean.

Kyle's perfect vacation becomes a nightmare while he's babysitting his sister, BeeBee. An earthquake hits the coast and starts afire in their hotel. While fighting their way through smoke and flame, Kyle remembers seeing a sign at the beach that said after an earthquake everyone should go uphill and inland, as far from the ocean as possible. Tsunamis, giant waves that often follow earthquakes, can ride in from the sea and engulf anyone who doesn't escape fast enough.

Can Kyle and BeeBee outwit and outrun nature's fury to save themselves from tsunami terror?

A thirteen-year old boy named Kyle thought spending a vacation along the Oregon Coast with his family would be a great experience. He'd never flown before and he'd never seen the beautiful Pacific Ocean.

Kyle's perfect vacation becomes his worst nightmare while he's baby-siting his six-year old sister Bee Bee. An earthquake hits the coast and starts an enourmous fire in his hotel he's staying in. While fighting his way smoke and flame, Kyle had remembered seeing a sign on the beach that stated....After an earthquake everyone should go uphill and inland, as far from the ocean as possible. Tsunamis' giant waves that often follow through earthquakes can ride in from the sea and engulf anyone who doesn't escape fast enough!

5 out of 5 stars Very exciting by RD from North Boulevard.......2006-12-20

The book I read is Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kerhet. It deserves 5 stars because it is very adventurous. This book is about a boy named Marty and his sister. His dad wins a trip to Oregon. There were three problems to this story First the hotel was set on fire. Then there was an earthquake. Last there were two tsunamis. The boy saved himself and his sister. They get help from their elderly friends and a dog along the way. This all happened when the parents are at sea on a cruise. This problem is solved when the children and the elderly couple climb a hill escaping the tsunami. I recommended this book to anyone who likes adventure and it is a very exciting book.

5 out of 5 stars Escaping the Giant Wave.......2006-11-30

This is an excellent book, it's about a kid named Kyle with his younger sister named Beebee, and yes that is her real name. Their parents leave them to go to an all adult party. When their gone, an earthquake happens. The hotel catches on fire, Kyle gets out of the hotel and 2 killer waves happen. If you want to know the ending and how it turns out you should read this awsome book.

5 out of 5 stars Escaping the Giant Wave.......2006-05-16

If you want to read an exciting book about two kids running for their lives this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Escaping the Giant Wave is an adventure fiction book by Peg Kehret. This book takes place on Kyle Davidson's summer break at the Totem Pole Inn is Northwest Oregon.

In the beginning of this book Kyle's parents won a trip to the coast of Oregon. Next Kyle and his sister, Bee-Bee, witnessed a tsunami while their parents were out on a dinner cruise. Would they be safe alone? Would their parents ever find them? You HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK ro find out what happens to Kyle and Bee-Bee.

The theme of this story is be alert to signs. They are put there for a reason. This book reminded me of the big tsunami that hit Thailand 1 1/2 years ago. Boys and girls who are 4th-5th grade would love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Escaping the Giant Wave.......2006-05-11

If you love suspense and adventure you must read this book. Escaping the Giant Wave, by Peg Kehret, is set on Fisher Beach in Oregon. The problem starts when Kyle and his sister, Beebee, are hit by a tsunami.

In the beginning of the story the school year ends and Kyle's family goes on vacation. Next when Kyle's parents are on a dinner cruise a tsunami hits. To find out what happens you have to read the book.

The theme in this book is better safe than sorry. This book reminds me of Hurricane Katrina. Boys 4th-6th grade will like this book.

Superb text, even in 2006. Must-have reference for seismic design of reinforced concrete structures. Contains good depth of info on shear wall design not available in more elementary texts.

If buying used, ask reseller to verify that the book has pages 713 onward (which includes, but is not limited to all references and index) before buying. Apparently, Wiley had a bad run.

Jennifer Weiner, whose novels Good in Bed and In Her Shoes earned her a place among women's book club aficionados everywhere, proves she still has the touch with Little Earthquakes, a tale of love, heartbreak, redemption, and friendship. Weiner's novel centers around four new mothers, all of whom must learn to adjust their lives and their marriages to deal with the challenges of raising children.

Ayinde is a beautiful, biracial newscaster who moves to Philadelphia after her husband, a star player for the NBA, is traded to the 76ers. She meets Becky, an overweight chef who plays the "pregnant or just fat" game every time she passes a mirror, and Kelly, an overachieving event planner who has her whole life mapped out down to the most minute details, after going into labor at a prenatal yoga class. The three become fast friends, and come to rely on each other for everything from burping techniques to intense emotional support. The group grows to include Lia, a semi-famous Hollywood starlet who leaves her husband and returns to Philly after a sudden tragedy.

While Little Earthquakes may leave little to the imagination, and some of the characters are laughably stereotypical (the Mama's boy Jewish doctor and the cheating ball player, to name a few), it is Weiner's gift for creating compelling characters with whom her readers can identify that make her such a successful storyteller. --Gisele Toueg

    Book Description

Jennifer Weiner's rich, witty, true-to-life New York Times bestselling novel tells the story of three very different women as they navigate one of life's most wonderful and perilous transitions: the journey of new motherhood.

Becky is a plump, sexy chef who has a wonderful husband and baby girl, a restaurant that's received citywide acclaim -- and the mother-in-law from hell. Kelly is an event planner who's struggling to balance work and motherhood while dealing with an unemployed husband who seems content to channel-surf for eight hours a day. And Ayinde's basketball superstar husband breaks her trust at her most vulnerable moment, putting their new family even more in the public eye. Then there's Lia, a Philadelphia native who has left her Hollywood career behind, along with her husband and a tragic secret, to start her life all over again.

From prenatal yoga to postbirth sex, Little Earthquakes is a frank, funny, fiercely perceptive take on the comedies and tragedies of love and marriage.

    Download Description

"First comes love. Then comes marriage. And then things start to get really interesting... In Good in Bed, Cannie Shapiro conquered public heartbreak and shaky self-esteem. In In Her Shoes, Rose and Maggie Feller learned about family secrets and the ties that bind. Now, in Jennifer Weiner's richest, wittiest, most true-to-life novel yet, this highly acclaimed storyteller brings readers a tale of romance, friendship, forgiveness, and extreme sleep deprivation, as three very different women navigate one of life's most wonderful and perilous transitions: the journey of new motherhood. Rebecca Rothstein-Rabinowitz is a plump, sexy chef who has a wonderful husband, supportive friends, a restaurant that's received citywide acclaim, a beautiful baby girl...and the mother-in-law from hell. Kelly Day's life looks picture-perfect. But behind the doors of her largely empty apartment, she's struggling to balance work and motherhood and marriage, while entering Oliver's every move (and movement) on a spreadsheet, and dealing with an unemployed husband who seems content to channel-surf for eight hours a day. And Ayinde Towne is already on shaky ground, trying to live her life to the letter of a how-to guide called Baby Success, when her basketball superstar husband breaks her trust at the most vulnerable moment in her life, putting their marriage in peril -- and their new family even more in the public eye. Then there's Lia Frederick, a Philadelphia native who has just come home, leaving Los Angeles behind, along with her glamorous Hollywood career, her husband, and a tragic secret, to start her life all over again. With her trademark warmth and humor, Weiner tells the story of what happens after happily ever after...and how an eight-pound bundle of joy can shake up every woman's sense of herself in the world around her. From prenatal yoga to postbirth sex, from sisters and husbands to mothers and mothers-in-law, Little Earthquakes is a frank, funny, fiercely perceptive Diaper Genie-eye view of the comedies and tragedies of love and marriage. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2007-10-16

"Little Earthquakes" is the third book by Jennifer Weiner that I've read. It's a good book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as "In Her Shoes" or "Good in Bed."

This book chronicles the lives of four women who come together around the time they all give birth for the first time. There's Becky, an overweight chef who is irritated because no one can tell if she's pregnant or "just fat." Kelly is a perky overachiever who keeps her young son on a very strict schedule. Ayinde is a stay-at-home mom who just happens to be married to one of the most famous basketball players in the world. Then there's Lia, who flees from California to her hometown of Philadelphia in an attempt to escape the memory of an unspeakable tragedy.

As a child-free woman, this book was a little too much baby for me. I'm sure women who are pregnant or who have kids will appreciate the many pages detailing breast-feeding woes, post-pregnancy sex, and poopy diapers, but reading about all that stuff only succeeded in making me incredibly happy about the fact that I am not a parent!

The other thing that really bugged me about "Little Earthquakes" is that Weiner really tried to cram every possible worst-case baby scenario into one book. These characters deal with crazy mother-in-laws, cheating husbands, career trouble, and even the death of a child. I realize that these are all very real problems that many women go through, but I just thought Weiner was laying it on pretty thick at times.

In spite of its flaws, this book features the type of fun, likeable characters that Weiner's novels are known for. It's a quick read and worth checking out if you're looking for something light and fun.

5 out of 5 stars exellent book by excellent author!!.......2007-10-02

yet another fabulous book by one of my favorite authors! i became a fast fan after reading "good in bed" and have every one of her books, even collections of short stories featuring stories of her's.. i am not married, nor have any children, but i almost know what to expect, since weiner has a way of almost making YOU a character, like a fly on the wall... childbirth, dealing with sleepless nights, and endless days, not being able to get your baby to 'latch on' to feed, and sore nipples.. also products to buy.. like baby snugglis, baby einstein (which i have seen babies under a year old watch and do sign language with!) and the such. i recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story with a great story line that you can't stop reading (i stayed up until 4 am reading until i finally fell asleep with the book on my face LOL)... no filler BS to move the story along. believe me, once you read a book by jennifer weiner, you will want to read them all!

5 out of 5 stars Little Earthquakes Jennifer Wiener.......2007-09-30

First of all I would say that this was one of my favorite books I have read in the last several years. I think Jennifer Wiener is an excellent author, and highly recommend this book and her others.

The book is about several women who are very different, and how their lives become entangled in a mystery. It kept me on my toes, and was so good I read the entire book within two days.

The book might appeal to mothers in that the main characters of the book were mothers (more so stay at home moms). I do not have children but loved the book. Again, highly recommended!

    Well worth the cost!

4 out of 5 stars Well written but depressing.......2007-08-30

As my title states, this was a very interesting story and very well written. However, as someone who has not had kids yet, I found it also to be a very depressing view of motherhood and really makes me think more than twice about having kids. None of the characters had anything good to say about motherhood, other than that they loved thier children. It was depressing!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Chick Lit for the Baby Set.......2007-08-17

If you are a pregnant woman or new mom, this is probably a great read for you. However, for me, it was not up to the standards readers have come to expect from Jennifer Weiner. Author of "In Her Shoes" and "Good in Bed," I really enjoyed both of those chick lit tales. Weiner can write, and she certainly has her pulse on the women of today and their concerns. She creates characters that are not only believable but likable, women whose journeys are worth following.

Although I didn't relate to the subject matter of "Little Earthquakes"--motherhood and the non-ending focus on the perfect baby (with all appropriate accompaniments)--the struggles of the women in this story eventually had me finishing the book. There is no doubt much to recommend it to new moms...Weiner's story covers everything from prenatal yoga to decorating the baby's room to post-baby sex. Weiner is a natural writer, and she can draw you into a story. Just be sure you've got the baby bottle ready for this one.

The year is 1906, the place is San Francisco. Annie and her brother, Jack, have just traveled here in their magic tree house, on a mission from Morgan le Fay, the mysterious magical librarian from King Arthur's time. In an effort to save Camelot, the children have already found three special kinds of writing for Morgan's library: something to follow (Civil War on Sunday), something to send (Revolutionary War on Wednesday), and something to learn (Twister on Tuesday). Now it's time to find "something to lend." It's a quiet, peaceful morning in San Francisco, and Annie is eager to start exploring. So eager, in fact, that she pulls Jack away from his research just before he would have learned a very important piece of information... All too soon, the siblings figure it out for themselves: they have arrived in this lovely city a moment before one of the biggest earthquakes the U.S. has ever known shakes the Bay Area to pieces! Stunned, Jack and Annie wander the streets, but quickly find a purpose. Lots of people need help transporting goods to safety, and many more are left without any idea where to go or what to do. But what about their mission? Will the kids find something to lend before the entire city goes up in flames?

Mary Pope Osborne's tremendously popular Magic Tree House series offers young readers a chance to immerse themselves in spellbinding adventures even as they learn about history. The terrible San Francisco earthquake is described with great historical accuracy, but with admirable age-appropriateness. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars Earthquake in the Early Morning.......2007-04-27

    This book is fabulous.
One of the reasons I like it is because it talked about fires, earthquake and natural disaster. Another reason is because it was near our city! The last reason I liked it is because they lost their city but still had hope. I learned some exellent facts. I learned the fire burned 28,000 buildings! They had half a millon people there. The earthquake was called "The Great Shake". It was one of the biggest earthquakes ever! I would recommend this book for three reasons. The characters are fun. Jack likes the realistic and Annie likes the magic. The second reason is the excitement and learning wonderful facts.
Earthquake in the Early Morning is a excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

      5 out of 5 stars Earthquake terror.......2005-11-04

The book starts on a hot summer day on Magpie island when Jonathan 's mom breaks her ankle. So Jonathan's dad takes his mom to the hospital and leaves Jonathan and his sister Abby and the dog on the island. Then the earthquake hits breaking the bridge to the city, smashing the home, and making the river flood over the island. So Jonathan puts his sister, and his dog, and him on two trees that had fallen from the earthquake and floated to the city and was taken to the hospital.

3 out of 5 stars Magpie Island Mania.......2005-10-28

Earthquake Terror by Peg Keheret is probably the best fiction book I have ever read so far. I liked it most because ig is very dramatic, and the part when they figure out that Magpie Island, the island that the Palmers are camping on, is about to have an earthquake! When the earthquake is over, they discover the island is sinking. what will the kids do? Mean while, their parents are trapped in a car, and they don't know how to get out.
The palmers son, Jonathon, who is my favorite charachtor, is very creative with his decisions. He knows how to get off of the island, but he dosen't know if it will work. But why he can't just swim off of the island is what I don'tunderstand. But Abby, Jonathon's disable sittle sister can't swim, but she allways complains, which becomes very annoying. And when Jonathon is eating lunch in the hospital, he has an average lunch, but it felt like a royal lunch because he hadn't eaten in days. It was a great book, I never wanted to stop reading it, and that's why I'm writing a review on it.

5 out of 5 stars Mother nature isn't always on your side...........2005-02-22

During a camping trip, Jonathan and his sister, Abby, are put into a surpring situation that turns for the worst. The two children find themselves fighting for survival after a devastating earthquake hits. Alone, they must learn to survive and overcome their greatest fears.

      Man vs. Nature

I read this book around maybe two or three years ago, but it still sticks in my mind as entertaining and great. If your into nature disasters, pick this book up.

      Book Description

Because of their structural simplicity, bridges tend to be particularly vulnerable to damage and even collapse when subjected to earthquakes or other forms of seismic activity. Recent earthquakes, such as the ones in Kobe, Japan, and Oakland, California, have led to a heightened awareness of seismic risk and have revolutionized bridge design and retrofit philosophies.

In Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges, three of the world's top authorities on the subject have collaborated to produce the most exhaustive reference on seismic bridge design currently available. Following a detailed examination of the seismic effects of actual earthquakes on local area bridges, the authors demonstrate design strategies that will make these and similar structures optimally resistant to the damaging effects of future seismic disturbances.

Relying heavily on worldwide research associated with recent quakes, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges begins with an in-depth treatment of seismic design philosophy as it applies to bridges. The authors then describe the various geotechnical considerations specific to bridge design, such as soil-structure interaction and traveling wave effects. Subsequent chapters cover conceptual and actual design of various bridge superstructures, and modeling and analysis of these structures.

As the basis for their design strategies, the authors' focus is on the widely accepted capacity design approach, in which particularly vulnerable locations of potentially inelastic flexural deformation are identified and strengthened to accommodate a greater degree of stress. The text illustrates how accurate application of the capacity design philosophy to the design of new bridges results in structures that can be expected to survive most earthquakes with only minor, repairable damage.

Because the majority of today's bridges were built before the capacity design approach was understood, the authors also devote several chapters to the seismic assessment of existing bridges, with the aim of designing and implementing retrofit measures to protect them against the damaging effects of future earthquakes. These retrofitting techniques, though not considered appropriate in the design of new bridges, are given considerable emphasis, since they currently offer the best solution for the preservation of these vital and often historically valued thoroughfares.

Practical and applications-oriented, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges is enhanced with over 300 photos and line drawings to illustrate key concepts and detailed design procedures. As the only text currently available on the vital topic of seismic bridge design, it provides an indispensable reference for civil, structural, and geotechnical engineers, as well as students in related engineering courses.

A state-of-the-art text on earthquake-proof design and retrofit of bridges

Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges fills the urgent need for a comprehensive and up-to-date text on seismic-ally resistant bridge design. The authors, all recognized leaders in the field, systematically cover all aspects of bridge design related to seismic resistance for both new and existing bridges.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for seismic design of bridges.......2003-01-11

Professor Priestley is No. 1 in the world when it comes to seismic design and retrofit of bridges. This book is a result of his extensive research conducted for Caltrans with Prof. Seible on bridge retrofit and their seismic behavior. The book is excellent reference for researchers and design engineers. The chapter about base isolations is very informative. Although I know that this is not his area, I wish he would elaborate more in chapter 3: seismicity and geotechnical considerations

4 out of 5 stars It is supposed to be known as the Gray Bible for bridges.......2000-12-01

This book offers a comprehensive reference on seismic bridge design, condensing the results of three decades of experimental and theoretical research conducted in the United States, especially at University of California, San Diego. The book covers the topic of design of new structures as well as the assessment and retrofitting of already existent bridges, offering easy to use analytical and design methodologies.
