Book Description
Legendary publisher Bill Gaines is perhaps best remembered as the founder of
MAD Magazine, but in the opinion of many dedicated comic book fans, his greatest achievement was E.C. Comics, a line of adventure, horror, and science-fiction comics whose influence on American graphic novels is undeniable, even today.
Foul Play! is the perfect book for anyone wanting to understand the special place E.C. holds in the comic fan's heart -- or who just wants to read some real good comics!
Foul Play! celebrates the fan-favorite creators of E.C. Comics, profiling their artists -- a veritable who's who of mid-20th century popular illustration -- and describing how they came to work with Bill Gaines and how their careers evolved after E.C.. Among the comics art legends profiled are Al Feldstein; Harvey Kurtzman; Johnny Craig; Jack Davis; Graham Ingels; Jack Kamen; Wallace Wood; Joe Orlando; Will Elder; John Severin; George Evans; Al Williamson; Reed Crandall; Bernie Krigstein; and more! Plus, the book includes a special bonus: a lost E.C. Comics story "Wanted for Murder!" originally intended to be published in 1956 but forgotten and unseen until now.
When originally published, E.C. Comics titles like
Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and Weird Science became best-selling titles, embraced by readers for their macabre wit and stunning illustration. Eventually, E.C. Comics ran afoul of a full Senate Subcommittee investigating (but never proving!) the link between comic books and juvenile delinquency, but not before winning a legion of fans that still treasure E.C.'s output.
Foul Play! demonstrates -- in glorious, gory detail -- exactly why these are among the most beloved comics stories ever published.

a tope!.......2007-05-12
Great trip down memory lane!.......2006-08-31
Super book!! Brings back memories of buying those (great, dirty, violent, perverted, notorious---choose your adjective)comics.
I was and still am a fan of science-fiction and loved the art of Wally Wood in Weird Science and Weird Fantasy and their reincarnations. I never bought Superman, Batman, Archie, et al.
Everyday I mourn the fact that my mother tossed out the magazines when I was in the service. And reading these comics apparently never hurt me as I went on to garner four academic degrees.
So buy this book and relive the golden days of EC comic books.
Pull the covers over your head and read it by flashlight!.......2006-05-29
In the 1950s, while the other kids were ooohing-and-ahhhing over Superman and the Green Lantern, we few proto-geeks were absorbed in MAD Magazine and the equally lunatic E.C. monthlies, especially Tales from the Crypt, Creepy, Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, and the SuspenStories series. Nobody could keep your eyes glued silently to the page like Jack Davis, Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein, and their cohorts. Some of the stories were original, some were adaptations of authors we also doted on. (Ray Bradbury was a favorite source, and you'll find his classic story "Touch and Go!" here, which I clearly remember reading when it appear in 1953.) This lavish volume is partly a history of that genre and partly a collection of full-length, photoreproduced stories -- plus an original, "Wanted for Murder!," written by Johnny Craig for E.C.'s "picto-fiction" magazine, Crime Illustrated! (which was actual typeset text -- no balloons -- overlaid on the black-and-white artwork). This is a great book for fans of the days when they published real comic books!
Truly GHASTLY over-design. Hugely disappointed........2006-03-03
Hugely disappointed with the over-design of this book, and consider it a magnificent book criminally ruined by overly decorative backdrops to the pages of original EC stories. The biographies and text here by Geissman is simply terrific; providing a cogent, articulate, evocative context for these iconic 1950s artists - from Wally Wood, Joe Orlando, Graham "Ghastly" Ingels, to the incredibly talented cover-art genius of Johnny Craig - not to mention the epochal Krigstein and the whole range of science fiction art in this justly remembered EC period. BUT... the clutter of coloured backgrounds placed behind the reproduced pages of stories by these artists made me want to immediately consign this book to an Ingels watery grave in the bayou! It is a travesty. Unbelievably congested, busy, "wriggling amoebae" multi-coloured backgrounds to the reproduced 1950s art visually compete with it throughout. It provides the WORST "visual noise" that totally distracts and competes with the well-reproduced art; the backgrounds COMPETE for attention like trying to read a comic-book in a vast tub of spaghetti, or enlarged coloured slides of dissected innards under a microscope. It becomes visually unbearable, and TOTALLY UNDERMINES the EC art. It is one of the very worst examples of appallingly over-designed books I can think of, where some faddish photo-shop graphics moron has been allowed to run their rampantly stupid techno-boots ALL OVER the crisp, stark integrity of the original artists. Wally Wood will be rolling in his grave. Geissman should be shot for having this desecrating, congested muddle of coloured vomit over-design and compromise the VISUAL CLARITY of these great artists. A TRULY APPALLING DESIGN/BOOK LAYOUT DECISION. ALL THE EDITORS ON THIS PROJECT SHOULD ALSO BE LINED UP FOR THESE TECHNI-COLOUR CRIMES AND GIVEN A BLOODY HIDING. A great book by Grant Geissman that has become a grievous, unredeemable INSULT to the original 1950s artists it is supposed to be honouring.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-12-02
Such a beautiful book....For someone who doesn't know much about EC comics (or for that matter comics printed during the 50s-80s),this book was an eye-opener.It describes the art and lives of the artists and creaters of EC in such a beautiful manner that once I started this book ,I was hooked. What a shame that these very interesting comics were stopped from being published only after a short run at the printing press. The book is done in a beautiful manner with about 14 EC comics stories included. The whole package is very nicely done.Highly recommended, even if you are not a big EC comic fan.Buy it just for the art.If I had a choice I would give it ten stars, one of the best books I own.

Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Silvano da Montacuto has wealth, good looks, a new hawk—and an infatuation with a merchant’s wife. When a man is murdered in his town, Silvano’s bloody dagger is found, and he is accused of the crime. For his own protection, he is sent to a Franciscan House, where he poses as a novice, or a young monk. There, he lays eyes on Chiara, a lovely novice at the nearby Abbey of the Poor Claires. Both Chiara and Silvano are put to work mixing paint pigments for a nearby basilica. But murder seems to have followed Silvano, and soon several other dead bodies turn up. Who is committing the crimes? Will a young man accused of multiple murders be able to clear himself? And what about the girl he adores? Fans of Mary Hoffman’s critically acclaimed Stravaganza series won’t be disappointed in the romance, colorful web of intrigue, and rich, marvelous setting—a Name of the Rose for teens!

But I Don't Have a Vocation!.......2007-07-12
I have read hundreds of historical mysteries and this one is top notch. Once I started it, I did not want to put it down. The main protagonists are Silvano, who has sought sanctuary in a Franciscan Friary after being accused of a murder he did not commit, and Chiara, who is forced to enter a neighboring convent because her family does not have the money for a dowry. The supporting characters are very interesting too. The lively plot could be described as Shakespeare meets Brother Cadfael. The fascinating details about color-making and fourteeenth century art brought back happy memories of my visit to the Basilica of St. Francis several years ago.

Plays Three:
A Separate Peace

Another Moon Called Earth
Neutral Ground
Professional Foul
Squaring the Circle
Introduced by the author, this third collection of plays written by Tom Stoppard contains his television plays, written between 1965 and 1984. They show that Stoppard's writing for the small screen is comparable to his more celebrated stage work, as the masterly and timely Professional Foul demonstrates. In his introduction the author briefly describes how the pieces came to be written and the circumstances of their original production.

Stoppard Collection.......2000-10-11
Stoppard is a wonderful playwright, but these are not some of his best plays. The collection is good, but I recommend buying some of his better plays even though they're not in an easy format like this, simply because it's better worth your money. If you already own those, however, this book will make a fine addition to your collection.
Book Description
Like Janet Evanovich or Jennifer Crusie, Tori Carrington mixes humor with danger and stealth with sex. The intrepid Sofie, a good Greek girl from working-class Astoria, Queens, is finding her feet as a budding private investigator and as a single gal in the big city.
In Foul Play, Sofie’s searching for a couple of hot prospects, one in her personal life and one professionally. The New York Mets might just be on their way to the World Series, but their newly signed pitching phenom has disappeared with the playoffs fast approaching.
As for her personal life, Sofie’s hooking up with a gorgeous Greek who is every bit as hunky as her long-time crush, Australian mystery man Jake Porter—and a lot more available.

Great Read!.......2007-08-08
If you can't get enough of the Plum books than this one is for you!
A More Well-Rounded and Appealing Sofie Finds Herself in a Ridiculous Mystery Resolution.......2007-07-30
Foul Play would be a breakthrough book for this series except for the solution to the main mystery being based on a ridiculous and unrealistic premise. But if you liked Sofie in Sofie Metropolis and Dirty Laundry, you'll love her in Foul Play. Enjoy Sofie and the Mets and forget the "mysteries."
If you didn't read the earlier books, Foul Play is filled with background references that fill in the blanks for you.
As the book opens, Sofie is sitting in a great seat at Shea Stadium, enthusiastically cheering on her Mets. Unfortunately, her enthusiasm becomes excessive and she is booted from the game. But, no problem, she's soon back and in the Mets locker room. How does Eugene Waters get her into such great spots?
It's now six months since she started working at her uncle's agency, and she's decided to stop taking lost pet cases. With the new-found freedom, she's gotten good at tracking down wandering spouses, and she's developed some skill at turning process servers into detectives. Jake Porter has mostly dropped out of her life, but she still feels heat at the thought of him.
Life seems to be really taking off when Gisela Venezuela hires Sophie to find out what's wrong with her husband, Reni, the Mets star pitcher who uses both arms to foil the opposition. Her retainer is an envelope filled with thousand dollar bills. But it's hard to trail a sports star who has body guards.
But there are nagging challenges. Sofie's grandfather is being sued for punching her ex-fiancé after learning that Thomas-the-Toad had switched her grandmother's diamond for a cubic zirconium. Can Sofie stop the suit? There's also a raft of people coming into the office asking for help with their lost pets. Sofie is also concerned that a prospective fiancé for her sister, Dino doesn't realize that her sister isn't interested. In a show of support for her sister, Sofie also proclaims that she wants a tattoo, and her sister tries to hold Sofie to it. Rosie, as usual, wants a new computer. Sofie wants a raise. She decides that she wants to reform her cousin Pete from stealing money into earning a living.
As the book proceeds, you'll find that Sofie develops as a woman, as a detective, and as a manager. She also becomes much more interesting.
If you don't know anything about baseball, you'll probably find this to be a five- or a four-star comic romance with a little mystery included. If you are a baseball fanatic, you'll be disappointed in the resolution of the main mystery and may grade this book as low as two stars.
Another homerun for Sofie!.......2007-06-30
Sofie Metropolis has been a private investigator for six months and her success has given her confidence. Her Uncle Spyros, who owns the private investigation firm, still hasn't shown back up in town. Sofie's high profile cases have garnered "missing pet" requests, but she thinks they shouldn't take them on because she's looking for that next big case. Finally, she gets one, and Sofie hopes this job will prove to her uncle, once and for all, that she is indeed fit to wear the PI title and be a partner in the agency. The wife of a superstar baseball player with the New York Mets is suspicious as to why her husband suddenly seems to have changed. Is he cheating on her with another woman? All Sofie needs to do is follow the guy around and dig into what he's up to. Being a big time Mets fan, Sofie can't help but hope the wife is wrong, especially since there is a hot pennant race going on. Now all Sofie has to do is be discreet. Ha! Easier said than done, when you're Sofie Metropolis!
I swear that the Sofie Metropolis series by Tori Carrington is getting better and better. Sofie is still the same street smart but vulnerable woman we first met in SOFIE METROPOLIS PI and continued in DIRTY LAUNDRY. No job is too hard for her to do. Sofie loves her Greek family and friends, but some days she wishes they'd leave her alone. Well, for only a day or two anyway. Sofie still has her cute dog, Muffy, as well as her assorted neighbors and nuisances from the previous books. Her grandfather is about to go on trial for his (well meaning) assault on Sofie's scumbag ex-fiancé. Without giving it away, there's a new development in Sofie's life that will have readers talking. Nope, I'm not going to tell. You'll just have to read to find out. ;-)
Sofie still wonders about Jake Porter, the mysterious Aussie who always seems to pop up when she least expects him to, but right now he's rather scarce. Sofie (and readers) just know he's soon destined to make an appearance. Office secretary Rosie is still as ditsy as ever, but she provides valuable support for Sofie. Also assisting are Eugene Waters and George Fowler, two interesting characters, both of whom Sofie wishes she didn't have to rely on for their unique expertise. Even if you're not a baseball fan, you'll enjoy the adventures in FOUL PLAY. I guarantee that you'll be laughing, crying all the while you're trying to solve Sofie's cases. Sofie is now showing more of a take-charge attitude with her job and even manages to nail her elusive uncle on the phone to agree to some changes at work.
The Sofie Metropolis series is a lot of fun to read and there are always a few minor subplots going right along with the main mystery. FOUL PLAY is an action-packed fun read that will leave readers guessing what will happen next. If you haven't picked up the first two in the series, then what are you waiting for? For a laugh-filled, enjoyable time all wrapped around a superb mystery, don't miss the continuing adventures of Sofie Metropolis in FOUL PLAY.

Home Run!.......2007-06-30
The Sophie Metropolis series is really hitting its stride with the third installment. The first book was pretty good, the second was excellent, and Foul Play continues where the second one left off, this time with Sophie solving the mystery of a split personality Mets pitcher. Sophie is honing her detective skills (though she still excels when looking for missing pets), the self-depracating humor is still there, and she is beginning to embrace her Greek heritage (not to mention Dino, the hunky Greek proprietor of a pastry store - ah, chocolate and sex, a match made in heaven!). The witty dialogue, the fast-moving plot, and the quirky Greek characters will keep the reader turning the pages and wanting more.
A very satisfying read -- keep them coming!
All the pieces fall together - a great series.......2007-06-24
I am finally a Sophie Metropolis fan. This book got everything right - good plot, good chemistry, everything came together. A Mets player's wife hires Sophie to see what's going on with her husband - he's not himself, and she wants to know why - and hands Sophie an envelope of $1000's. Although the 'mystery' is very easily solved by the reader, it is good to see Sophie establishing herself in business, in her family, and her lovelife. She comes to terms with herself as a person and a Greek American who seems to have this wonderful man in her life. And I really like that..
OK I am officially a fan of Sophie Metropolis. This book was more enjoyable to me than the current Stephanie Plum. And the Greekness of Foul Play was really nice - Brought me to my childhood where on your nameday you got visitors and served sweets to the people and it was open house - The recipes at the end of the book were good, although the recipes tend to vary from area to area of Greece. Good Greek coffee was one of my first things to make when I was a kid - strong, sweet Greek coffee served in demitasse cups.
A celebrated day not only to go to Church but to have company and visit. Fun memories.
Yiassas Carringtons! Look forward to #4!
While I have to pay for my books, I am always glad to find new things to read, and am glad to have found this series and it is getting all things into place to be a great series.
Book Description
Last night's earthquake has the California Gold Country town of Flat Skunk buzzing; and over her morning mocha, deaf newswoman Connor Westphal is shaping it into a lead story for her local paper, the Eureka! Then her TTY phone brings more sensational news: a twisted corpse has been found on a construction site owned by her rival publisher, Harlan Truax. What was the dead soil engineer doing there at midnight, and was it the quake that toppled him four stories to his death? An act of God--or human malevolence?
Connor is soon back in the sleuth business, uncovering Flat Skunk's darkest secrets: from toxic dirt to tainted relationships. But someone's out to stop her, and they're saying it with flowers, verses, menacing e-mail--and a series of murders that could knock the numbers off the Richter scale and silence one lip-reading reporter forever.

A good mystery with a protagonist with a twist........2000-05-17
I read mysteries as a way to relax in between all the serious writing and reading I do for science education for the Deaf community. So it was with great joy that I found these little gems by Penny Warner. She writes about a Deaf woman who runs a newspaper. Now first off, this is unheard of--pardon the pun, for a Deaf person to be perceived as having the intelligence to do something other than menial work. And it is with, I think, a slyness on Ms. Warner's part that she makes her heroine the owner and editor of an American English newspaper. Ms. Warner knows of what she is talking about. She isn't Deaf but has worked with them for years. So these books start out with a big difference. It is becoming more acceptable to have disabled people out and in the open, such as on Sesame Street and in other characters such as Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rime (sic). Popularizing people with differences helps those of us who are trying to make it in the 'normal' world, and we appreciate it! Karen Whitehead Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu
a thoroughtly satisfying mystery.......1998-08-29
this is the first book by Penny Warner that I've read, but it's good enough to make me go out and buy her previous novel. Connor Westphal is a curious, tenacious newspaper reporter in a small town in the mountains of California. She covers the story of a fatality at a construction site that may be earthquake related - or may be murder. The book is fast-paced, the plot is interesting, and hearing-impaired Connor is a great off-beat hero. I look forward to Penny Warner's last book, and her next.
SIGN OF FOUL PLAY - PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.......1997-12-13
Connor Westphal, deaf journalist/sleuth, is caught up once again in the more lethal happenings of Flat Skunk, Calif. After her successful first outing in DEAD BODY LANGUAGE, the wisecracking thirty-something Connor continues to deal with her attraction to the local hunk and to search for any story other than the local frog-racing contest that will give her newspaper, THE EUREKA!, an edge over the competition. Readers will guess who the killer is and be aghast at Connor's intrepid pursuit - anything for a headline. Through Connor's spunky first-person narrative, Warner, long a sign-language and special-ed teacher, perfectly conveys all the ways a deaf person perceives and communicates, including the guessing game of oral conversation, telephone contact with hearing people, the beauty of sign language, and auditory memories. As in the first Connor mystery, it is not wise to read the last couple of chapters before bedtime; this is delicious horror from gory beginning to ghastly end, with a fun, irreverent protagonist.
A rich, complex and thoroughly satisfying who-done-it.......1997-11-11
Connor Westphal moved to Flat Skunk, a revitalized mining town in California's Gold Country, to run the weekly newspaper. Between the constant tremors and solving a murder mystery (see DEAD BODY LAGUAGE), the hearing impaired publisher has had no time to miss the San Francisco scene that she left behind. A quake hits the small town, leaving behind a fatality in its wake. Apparently, Cullen Delaney, a soil engineer, was accidentally impaled by a steel rod when he lost his balance during the quake.
Connor decides to investigate the death, sensing that the accident seems too well timed. As she searches for answers, a malevolent presence starts to stalk her. She receives threatening notes and perilous acts of vandalism all designed to frighten her from completing her investigation of what is starting to look more and more like a premeditated murder case. Even as Connor links the deceased to the town's leading family, more deaths occur and she herself appears to be a future homicide victim.
As good as Penny Warner's debut novel was, SIGN OF FOUL PLAY is much better due to the richer characterizations (including a love interest) that serve to turn the heroine into a much more complex, multi-faceted person. Though a minor leap of faith is needed to accept Connor's gut instincts, the mystery is a true who-done-it that is near impossible to figure out until the author is ready to reveal the culprit. Ms. Warner is a gifted writer, who infuses a fresh look to the amateur sleuth sub-genre.

A Riveting Book!!!!.......2004-10-12
I loved this book! The story was very intense, I couldn't put it down!
The story follows Billie Murphy, a full-time public relations representative with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. She's put on a job with Blalock Industries to help them find land for their new business. She meets one of the men with the company, and she will never be the same.
Behind the scenes of the Global Football League, GFL, is a huge plot of fraud and deceit. Little does Billie know quite how involved she is.
Like I said before, I loved this book. It's a great mystery, and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page.

A THRILLING THEATRICAL TURNPAGER.......2004-06-20
One of the best in the CRIMEBUSTERS SERIES, with FUNNY BUSINESS and SHOOT THE WORKS .The Musical set is perfectly used for a plot rich of mysteries and surprises, with hilarious winks to everything count in the Broadway land, from WEST SIDE STORY to WEBBER to SOUND OF MUSIC.The backstage world is skilfully rendered and Pete Crenshaw's CHORUS LINE triumph is a pleasure for the old fans of Rocky Beach,California. The culprit is a genuine surprise and he's perhaps the most wicked in all the THREE INVESTIGATORS'series (Huganay excluded, of course!).A real pleasure with amusing Shobiz antics!
