Good book but I believe there are better.......2006-11-27
The good: This book is easy to read and understand, assumes very little of the reader other than a general understanding of current science. Explainations are clear and build logically throughout the book. Very little math - any high school math would be enough to understand what little there is in this book. Information is up to date and the book has many good pictures and diagrams to aid in understanding.
The not as good: I would have liked more in depth detail. I know this is somewhat subjective the book still has nearly 500 pages, however the text often only covers 60% of a page. In comparison to the at least two compeating books "Astronomy Today" and "The Universe" have over 700 pages each and more like 90% of a text page coverage just to grossly compare them. Each of these books also are easy to read, have good pictures and diagrams too.
So all in all this book is good and covers the subject well, but if you wish more detail other books may be better choices.
Everything you want to know, plus a great CDRom!.......2003-04-07
This book is really good, especially for those interested in the universe and its formation. It also comes with a CDRom with video clips and a study guide for students. A useful, and interesting book!

i found this book to be very helpful for my intro to astronomy class..the pictures were very helpful
Great Textbook, easy to read and enjoyable to learn........2007-03-28
As stated in the title, bought this book for a college course and found it to be a good read and a pleasure to learn from. Lots of great color pictures other artwork.
Too easy.......2006-08-16
This book is an excellent introductory to astronomy. However, it seems as if the authors are afraid of scaring away students with a few equations and math. They spend pages trying to describe an astrophysical situation when they could list an equation or a graph that would be more succinct and easier to comprehend.
The Best Introductory Astronomy Book I've Every Read.......2006-04-20
The best astronomy book I've ever read. Even more than that, this is the best science book I've ever read. The writing style combined with the excellent illustrations make even fairly complex subject simple and understandable. Even their descriptions of things like relativity are so simple that anyone can understand them.
Now the book is in its fourth edition, bringing it up to date with:
the discovery of an object larger than Pluto in our own solar system
the latest results from the rovers and orbiters studying Mars
the latest Cassini results from Saturn and Huygens results from Titan
the Deep Impact mission to Comet Tempel 1
supernovae observations providing stronger evidence for dark energy
recent results from the Spitzer Space Telescope
Mastering Astronomy -- the book includes a one-year subscription to this web based interactive media that has been used by over 100,000 students.
Note that this book comes in several editions. This one covers everything. The other two are extracted from this book.
Reviewed by an astronomy student.......2000-01-04
As an astronomy student at the University of Colorado, I have used "The Cosmic Perspective" as a text book for two of my classes (one on stars and galaxies, and one on the solar system). This book is perfect for both: the text is clear and full of insight; the illustrations and photographs are abundant and extremely professional, and they complement the text superbly; the sections called "Mathematical Insight" give the reader a clear understanding of the science involved, and the sections called "Common Misconceptions" are as fun to read as they are informative.
I have read this book cover-to-cover, and although it is intended as a text book, it reads like many of the very popular science books I have read. If you enjoyed reading Sagan's "Cosmos", Gribbin's "In Search of the Big Bang", Feynman's "The Character of Physical Law", Lederman's "The God Particle" or Hawking's "A Brief History of Time", you will enjoy this very well-conceived and well-written book.
"The Cosmic Perspective" is very comprehensive. Besides covering the fundamental concepts of astronomy (such as light as the cosmic messenger; universal motion; celestial timekeeping; and telescopes), this book details how stars are born, evolve and die; the fundamentals of relativity; how the galaxies were formed, as well as how our solar system was formed; how vast space really is; how we know the distances to various objects in our universe; and how we know what happened at the early moments of the Big Bang. Since this book is new (published in 1999), it contains the latest facts and the latest thinking of modern astronomy. This book captured my interest and my enthusiasm the moment I began reading it.
Book Description
“My parents suck ass. Banning me from the phone and restricting my computer privileges are the most tyrannical parental gestures I can think of. Don’t they realize that Hope’s the only one who keeps me sane? . . . I don’t see how things could get any worse.”
When her best friend, Hope Weaver, moves away from Pineville, New Jersey, hyperobservant sixteen-year-old Jessica Darling is devastated. A fish out of water at school and a stranger at home, Jessica feels more lost than ever now that the only person with whom she could really communicate has gone. How is she supposed to deal with the boy- and shopping-crazy girls at school, her dad’s obsession with her track meets, her mother salivating over big sister Bethany’s lavish wedding, and her nonexistent love life?
A fresh, funny, utterly compelling fiction debut by first-time novelist Megan McCafferty,
Sloppy Firsts is an insightful, true-to-life look at Jessica’s predicament as she embarks on another year of teenage torment--from the dark days of Hope’s departure through her months as a type-A personality turned insomniac to her completely mixed-up feelings about Marcus Flutie, the intelligent and mysterious “Dreg” who works his way into her heart. Like a John Hughes for the twenty-first century, Megan McCafferty taps into the inherent humor and drama of the teen experience. This poignant, hilarious novel is sure to appeal to readers who are still going through it, as well as those who are grateful that they don’t have to go back and grow up all over again.

Light, funny, and somewhat cliche.......2007-10-17
Though we've seen countless novels like this one before, and countless characters resembling Jessica Darling, this book will make for a fun read. If you're in the mood for some teen-angst, high-school drama, this book hits the spot. There's nothing really unique about this novel, but Megan McCafferty still finds a way to make it so good, that you'll be eager for more.
Light, Fluffy, And Entirely Unmemorable.......2007-09-06
After reading all the praise this book has gotten from the legions of readers who seem to find it absorbing, humorous, and realistic, I was disappointed to find both the plot and the characters extremely clichéd and formulaic.
I'm not saying that I found the book horrible. It was very quick and light, written in a straightforward journal format, making it a fluffy, effortless read. If you're looking for a lightly humorous chick lit novel, this book will fill those requirements.
However, if you're looking for a smart, unique novel that you're going to remember in years to come, I wouldn't recommend this. Most of the characters are either stereotypical or one-dimensional, with the exception of Marcus, who was quite unusual. Jessica was the traditional "smart, misunderstood runner girl". You can find her type in all sorts of teenaged novels. She irritated me. She was incredibly intelligent, a gifted runner, and great at writing, and yet her attitude toward life was generally pretty negative.
With all of her talent, you'd think Jessica would be confident, not pessimistic, which is why she struck me as fake. As for her friends, they were like characters from a soap opera. The plot was monotonous and unsurprising, with no truly exciting twists, right up to the end, which was neither final enough to provide closure nor enough of a cliffhanger to have you eagerly awaiting the sequel.
Instead of this novel, read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen, or Just Listen, also by Sarah Dessen. I found all these novels to be much more realistic depictions of high school.
Sloppy Firsts.......2007-08-27
I read this book a few years ago when I saw it in the book store. I'm a rather picky reader and thought this might be fun to pass some time. I was attached to the character Jessica Darling by the end of this book and even more thrilled to find out that there was a second out at the time. Even more so I bought the third one just as it had been released and the same thing now with the Fourth Comings. Megan has created a character that simply comes to life in the reading. I would suggest to most who like coming of age stories to read this. Its quiet heart warming.
Chuckle, Chuckle, Ha Ha, Hee Hee, Tear.......2007-08-16
The first time I read this book, I was in 8th grade and I still love it to this day! I have read it at least 15 times and have never grown tired of it. Jessica Darling is me in a nutshell...if I were a female track star. Everything else is me...yes, I graduated salutatorian of my class and am currently going to Columbia University. I LOVE this series and you should too...especially if you are an angst-filled teenager.
Welcome Back.......2007-08-10
As Charles Dickens once very aptly obsevered: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Of course Dickens wasn't referring to high school, but the French Revolution. But today, in our current American society his words can be no closer to the truth when discussing the legally mandated ritual called high school.
Everyone has his or her story. From the glory days full of football games, after-hour parties, and social ruling to the lesser exuberant memories our being an outsider, not understanding anything going on around you, and the unfortunately bullyness. Yet despite the pangs of High School and the sometimes harsh memories that come along with it, it is a time in our lives that years removed somehow becomes glorified as "the best time of your life," wither that statement is true or not.
McCafferty has constructed an unlikely heroine who reminds us exactly why we hated high school so much... and exactly why we will probably always look back on it with fond memories of times pass. Jessica Darling is you. Jessica Darling is me. Jessica Darling is everyone. Whither you can relate to everything she says, or just a few of the experiences she goes through during these novels, there is a little bit of everything within our heroine.
Unlike the heroines of classic literature that defeat the sociality structures (Dicken's "A Tale of Two Cities"), learn the true meaning of love (a la Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"), Jessica Darling's one true clam to fame is not only surviving high school, but figuring it out before she leaves the hallowed halls. Most people figure it out sooner or later, but usually when they are removed from the experience.
What McCafferty is trying to say to the audience at large is that life matters. Everything that has happened to you, is happing to you, and will happen you have an effect that you can never dream off. The point of life isn't just sitting back and waiting for the next step. But it is embracing the here and now.
McCafferty is able to do these through a narrative that reads more like a self-aware John Hughes script, rather than 95% of book one would find in their local "young adult fiction" section. And the true genius and charm of the book doesn't from Jessica's stories of high school. But through your own memories, that while reading this book you are able to relive again vicariously through the eyes of Jessica. This book was not written for the tween set as a way to drool over what those "magical four years" will be like (a la "Dawson's Creek"), but as a way for people past that experience to look back and realize just how much their high school years truly means.
I cannot recommend this book enough, especially to fans of the budding new genre of self-aware coming-of-age stories such as "Prep," "Boy meets Boy," and the "Rules of Attraction." In all honestly I must request that everyone in their post high-school years, but still young enough to remember the impact John Hughes has on society to order a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed in the least!

Great lessons for immediate use.......2007-07-15
This book contains transcripts and activities of lessons taught in conjunction with specific examples of children's lit. The transcripts show how the intended activity emerges. Some planning would be necessary to have these books on hand, or similar examples could be substituted. Overall, I think this will be a great book to use with my class.
Good Resource.......2007-01-19
Book is full of excellent resources. I used it with my fifth graders and they enjoyed the lessons. My only wish is there would be more lessons for each of the traits.
Best writing book I've ever used!.......2005-11-10
I am a third grade teacher of mostly at-risk students (English Lang. Learners and low socio-economic students). I was frustrated with the format of most writing instruction books. They were boring or hard to follow. I also wanted to incorporate the 6 traits of writing into my lessons, so when I saw this book, I thought I would try it.
I love how Sloan walks you through each lesson, what to say, what to do. The lessons are simple to understand and give for the teacher and the students.
It incorporates read-alouds of real books at the beginning of each lesson and shows how it ties in to what you're teaching.
My students were better writers from the very first lesson!
Amazing Book.......2005-09-30
This book is a great teaching tool. Within days of receiving it, I had already used several lessons. My class loves the lessons. I've also seen an improvement already in their writing. I have a class of second lang. learners. If it can work for them, it can work for anyone.

Reclaim Your Fire
"Teaching with Fire is a glorious collection of the poetry that has restored the faith of teachers in the highest, most transcendent values of their work with children....Those who want us to believe that teaching is a technocratic and robotic skill devoid of art or joy or beauty need to read this powerful collection. So, for that matter, do we all."
-Jonathan Kozol, author of Amazing Grace and Savage Inequalities
"When reasoned argument fails, poetry helps us make sense of life. A few well-chosen images, the spinning together of words creates a way of seeing where we came from and lights up possibilities for where we might be going....Dip in, read, and ponder; share with others. It's inspiration in the very best sense."
-Deborah Meier, co-principal of The Mission Hill School, Boston and founder of a network of schools in East Harlem, New York
"In the Confucian tradition it is said that the mark of a golden era is that children are the most important members of the society and teaching is the most revered profession. Our jour ney to that ideal may be a long one, but it is books like this that will sustain us - for who are we all at our best save teachers, and who matters more to us than the children?"
-Peter M. Senge, founding chair, SoL (Society for Organizational Learning) and author of The Fifth Discipline
Those of us who care about the young and their education must find ways to remember what teaching and learning are really about. We must find ways to keep our hearts alive as we serve our students. Poetry has the power to keep us vital and focused on what really matters in life and in schooling. Teaching with Fire is a wonderful collection of eighty-eight poems from such well-loved poets as Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Billy Collins, Emily Dickinson, and Pablo Neruda. Each of these evocative poems is accompanied by a brief story from a teacher explaining the significance of the poem in his or her life's work. This beautiful book also includes an essay that describes how poetry can be used to grow both personally and professionally.
Teaching With Fire was written in partnership with the Center for Teacher Formation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Royalties from this book will be used to fund scholarship opportunities for teachers to grow and learn.

Not For Teachers Only!.......2007-05-17
I bought this book a while back for my oldest daughter who teaches high school English and Art. It was so awesome that I kept it for myself. (I have a naughty habit of reading all the books I buy as gifts before I give them away....does that make them used books?) My copy is quite dog-eared and worn.
If you love poetry, you NEED this book. The poems are varied and inspiring and enlightening. I discovered many new poets whose books I just had to own after reading their poems here. It's an amazing anthology and would make a great gift to give any friend or loved one who enjoys poetry.
Teaching with fire:Poetry that Sustains the Courage to Teach.......2007-03-10
I bought two copies of this book, one for myself and one for my supervisor. The poems are well chosen and the book is well organized into different categories having to do with vocational discernment. What makes this book unique, however, is the personal testimonies from teachers describing the meaning of each poem in their lives. Since I received this book I have used it extensively, not only for my own enrichment but also for the enrichment of the patients I work with,
Buy this book for a teacher.......2006-09-14
At first glance you might think it's just another "teacher book" but it is so fullfilling. As a teacher who loves poetry, literacy, and teaching children to love the written word this book touched me deeply. The poems can be read in the classroom, the narratives are rich and moving and they made me realize I was not alone in feeling I was called to the teaching profession. This book was a Christmas gift to me, one I have deeply cherished. The book gets to the core; it brought tears to my eyes.....tears of joy.
Treasured Collection!.......2006-05-06
I absolutely treasure this book! For several years now, everywhere I give talks or do workshops on service-learning and civic education in higher education, I find an excuse to read a poem or two from this compelling collection of poetry. I think educators are yearning for renewal, and the combination of each poem along with a teacher's note on the meaning of the poem, strikes a chord. I know this, not only from audience reactions to my reading from the book, but also because I always get asked for the citation! I am always happy to recommend the book--(no one in higher ed has said to me they were not interested in the book, when I tell them the poems were selected by K-12 teachers). Suggestion for gift-giving: whenever it fits the occasion, it is a great present. It is also perfect for end-of-year giving for groups (appreciation gift for graduating seniors, recognition of teachers, thank you to participants in service-learning and community involvement programs, etc.).
excellent.......2006-03-08
I love this book. I especially enjoyed the narratives that people wrote about why that was their favorite poem.

trash is too nice of a word.......2007-10-07
I enjoy paranormal romance as much as the next person - this however is pure trash! If there was a plot between all the sex I couldn't find it. I don't consider myself a prude but will NEVER read another of Lora Leigh's books after this.
Strange, emotional and very very rude........2007-10-07
This book caught me completely by surprise.
I knew nothing about the author and thought I was reading just another poor paranormal.
Until about half-way through when the true nature of the story was revealed. Not pink or purple either. A solid blue. Fine.
What I don't get at all is the cultural arena in which it is set. Something like native american via the mengele labs in the third reich death camps. I'm still shaking my head in mystification.
However since I absolutely loved The Odessa File which I read years ago and which unfortunately spawned absolutely no clones, I'll stick with the series for a little while.
Btw. For those who don't know. All feral cats have barbs.
Megans Mark.......2007-10-04
Another great story by Lora Leigh. If you love shape-shifter storylines with great romance, strong characters and wonderful sex, she is a must read.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-08-15
Megan Fields has the ability to feel other's emotions, so she is hiding out (sorda) in a remote area of New Mexico as a sheriffs deputy.
Braden, feline breed, also police of some sort team up to uncover murders, mysteries, etc.
This book begins the neat series on The Breeds.
It was well written, starts right out, full of action and adventure and abit of the paranormal.
It was NOT raunchy. FYI LOL
Loved it!! Sexy and exciting!!.......2007-06-29
I love this book! I love the sexual tension, the connection between them was intense. The sex was hot, hot, hot!!! The action in this book was awesome! It all evened out and I just loved it, can't wait for the next one. Lora Leigh is becoming one of my fav's!!!

I had read the previous titles in this series, and enjoyed these two sequels. Well written, entertaining, kept my interest.
Enjoyable book.......2007-01-10
I love Nora Roberts and this book was no exception. I really enjoyed just sitting back and finishing up with the Calhoun story.
Very Good!.......2006-10-27
Yes this is old Nora, but it is a great story. This was a reread for me and I enjoyed it the second time around very much.
This is the last 2 stories in the 5 that involve the Calhoun family.
In Suzanna's surrender you finally get the oldest sisters story. She had a rough marriage and an even harder divorce. She is raising two kids and working hard at her own gardening business. She gets involved with ex-cop Holt Bradford, who was also the local bad boy in his teens. This is a great love story. Also in this story you have the conclusion to the mystery surrounding the Calhoun's Great Grandmother's tragic death and the missing emeralds. You also get more details of the love affair between Christian and Bianca, in Christians words.
In Megan's Mate you have the story of Calhoun sister in law. This story takes place a year after Suzanna's so you get a nice follow up on the whole family. Megan is a single mother who has closed herself off to love... But then she meets Nate Fury and all her walls come crashing down.
This is a wonderful conclusion to the Calhoun Family saga. Two great stories.

Excellent advice for educators and PARENTS!.......2005-03-05
Megan's "Trust Matters" is an insightful illustration of how important trust is - not only in our schools, but also in our society. While this practical book thoughtfully offers advice geared towards educators, I found that (as a father of three elementary school age children) it provided a terrific perspective for how I can positively contribute to the trust relationship. Megan's "Facets of Trust" (Benevolence, Honesty, Openness, Reliability and Competence) combined with her "Functions of Leadership" (Visioning, Modeling, Coaching, Managing and Mediating) are brilliantly thought out and presented. This book is filled with sound advice for how to create and maintain trust in relationships - in all of life's settings. Get Megan's book - I promise you won't be disappointed! It is truly a MUST READ!

Applying the material to real life situations with be the true test. The author(Megan Tschannen-MoranI is coming to our district to work with us on how we are applying the princples to our team and in our schools. She is very easy to work with and is tailoring the professional development to our teams questions and needs. Megan is that rare individual you only meet once in a life time.
Don't miss this book if you are working to improve the organization or defining how trust impacts our lives.
Practical Advice for Beleagured Principals.......2004-08-31
The practical advice in this book is invaluable for educational leaders who are under fire in today's climate. At points, it reads like a novel -- with up-close stories of 3 real-life principals. At other points, it reads like a self-help book -- with a comprehensive five-point model for understanding and building trust in schools. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The applications were obvious and compelling. No school administrator should go without reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
nothing new.......2007-10-09
I will start out by saying that this book is awesome for the person who has never ventured near a tee with scissors and razor blade in hand. The instructions are very clear and most often simple and easy to follow. Most of the designs are fairly basic and don't really require any previous sewing experience, though I would say if you want to get into any major restructuring of anything, sewing experience would be very helpful. My only issue with this book is the sizing issue I have run into with most of the patterns. I feel that the sizing in most patterns is for a flat-chested, less-shapely woman. I have had to adjust every shirt and skirt I have made. I am a size 8 or 10 and happen to be a bit busty (34DD) and have had issues with every top being too small in the bust. I would recommend this book to someone who is just discovering how fun it can be to recreate one's wardrobe, but for someone who has been doing it for a while may find the suggestions/patterns a bit been-there-done-that.
As advertised.......2007-10-01
Most of the styles in this book are a bit "edgy" for my more conservative tastes. I was hoping for a few ideas that I could use, but could not. I am passing this book on to my daughter and friends. The best was the wedding dress. It was really quite attractive and I know some young gals who could pull it off. Still looking for a book with some ideas for a more mature crowd.
Inspirational!.......2007-08-24
This T-shirt re-crafting book is fantastic! The projects are fun and most are fairly easy. The author gives clear directions and good step by step drawings. There are many creative ideas; tops, skirts, dresses, bags, pillows and much more. There are many small projects for scraps too. Most of the projects are good for all ages (I'm 43) and could be done even without a sewing machine, although it's much quicker with one. What I really love is that you get more like 300 ideas because she gives at least a couple variations on each project. Hit your local thrift stores and garage sales and even if you can barely sew, you could be wearing an awesome one of a kind skirt for less than $1!
Cool........2007-08-23
This book has many cool and cute ideas. And they are not all shirts. There are skirts, a checkbook cover, and an iPod cover, just to name a few. The directions are very well written, and the diagrams are very helpful. Warning: some of the shirt designs are not age appropriate for younger kids (under age 16 or so). There is, however, something for everyone.

This book has lots of fun projects. It has many ideas that teens would enjoy. I am making several of the shirts with my daughter. Fun book

Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your current station in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled "Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsy office workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (which may reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34 years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knows how to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion is that most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it in slowly and then sleep on it.
Book Description
Do your eyelids feel heavy during afternoon meetings? Do you sleep extra hours on weekend mornings? Do you use caffeine to stay alert? An alarm to get out of bed?
These are all symptoms of sleep deficiency--signals that you are operating below your peak performance and beneath your mental capacity. Despite popular perceptions, sleep is not a luxury--it is a necessity. More than seventy million Americans are sleep-deprived, and make crucial business and personal decisions in an impaired state. In Power Sleep, Dr. James B. Maas, a pioneer of sleep research at Cornell University, has created an easy, drug-free program to improve your body and mind for an alert and productive tomorrow. In Power Sleep, you'll find:
- The golden rules of sleep
- Twenty great sleep strategies
- Dos and don'ts of sleeping pills and over-the-counter remedies
- How to combat travel fatigue, including jet lag and drowsy driving
- Tips for exhausted parents of newborns, infants, and toddlers
- How to overcome sleep disorders, including insomnia
An important and practical book, Power Sleep will help you get the sleep you need to improve your mental and physical well-being quickly and dramatically and to become a peak performer.

Great book - really opens your eyes to the power of a good night's sleep!
Good review and guide for sleep.......2007-06-01
I don't know why, but even though I've read different ways to 'get more sleep', etc., I still have trouble with it. My problem is that I try to cram in 'just one more thing' or get sucked into a hobby or the computer, movie, project, etc. and stay up too late. This book was interesting as it talked about sleep research as well as the real dangers of being sleep deprived (beyond just feeling wasted).
I understand the importance of keeping a similar sleep-wake cycle every day, and I struggle there because I have to get up at 5:30 a.m. on work days. Who wants to get up at 5:30 on your day off?? I have been filling out the sleep logs (I re-typed the chart in the book into a MS-Word document) and it's hard seeing bedtimes and sleep durations all over the place. Maybe my circadian rhythms are wired to a little later wake times.
Overall, though, through prayer and persistence I'm working to change my bad sleep habits a bit at a time. The recommendations and the 'Golden Rules of Sleep' are good to review often to help cement new GOOD habits. My favorite quote (and a good reminder) in the book is: "when you start treating sleep as a NECESSITY, not a luxury, your whole life will change." I am looking forward to the change.
Why Your Body Needs 8 Hours Sleep Every Night.......2007-01-30
This book belongs in every home library. It is simply the best book on sleep I've ever read. Easy to read, and backed with plenty of research. Has a terrific and useful sleep log. I used to believe all those corporate CEOs and "top performers" who said they could get by just fine on 4-6 hours' sleep at night. With employer expectations of workdays lasting 10-14+ hours, I felt I had no choice but to try to emulate them if I wanted to keep my job, let alone get ahead. I used to think that because I fell asleep within 60 seconds every night (a sure sign of sleep deprivation, as I now know) my body was functioning very efficiently. I yawned all day long, my eyes closed sometimes at my desk or behind the wheel, I was chronically depressed and even suicidal, I seemed to be losing my memory, I had chronic headaches, trying to get up each morning was like trying to rouse myself from a coma, and my general health was deteriorating, which I attributed to the natural aging process. I lived like this for decades. During a period of unemployment, I read Dr. Maas' book about why the body needs adequate sleep and what happens to it when it doesn't get enough, followed his advice, and found to my astonishment that 8 hours' sleep every night cured all of my problems! I NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE! I will NEVER go back to living a life of chronic sleep deprivation. My depression has been replaced with joy, I fall asleep in 10 minutes, not 60 seconds, my memory has recovered, my heart palpitations are gone, my headaches are gone, my energy is enough to last all day -- without coffee, I no longer yawn, my eyes don't close on me, and I get out of bed with energy and cheer. Do yourself a favor and get this book. Then tell your boss you're not staying past 7PM anymore because you have to go home and get your sleep!

I think that this book will change people lives. Its a good book. A bit alarmist at time but i feel that just to keep the americans Interested. Over all I find that the content is very good but a little complicated for the ordinary reader. However I feel its is a very important book and people would benifit it from it greatly.
Sleep Success.......2006-11-28
I am a student in Professor Maas's Psych 101 course at Cornell University. Power Sleep is required for the course (Professor Maas does not make a profit on sales to Cornell students). I found this book extremely helpful. Though I've always thought that I was knowledgeable about the subtleties of sleep, I found that I was not upon reading this book. I've been plagued with illness and found myself sluggish for years. I was always forced out of bed after 8 hours by my mother, concerned that I get enough out of each day. Little did I know that I was trying to thrive at a huge sleep deficit. Since following Professor Maas's Power Sleep advice, my grades have improved in addition to my ability to think clearly throughout the day. I would recommend this book to anyone who has any type of sleeping problems, or even those who think that they are performing at their peaks!
