Book Description
You have natural magical abilities that can elevate your life to a whole new level, as well as heal and help your loved ones and clients. The original teacher of this Divine magic was an Egyptian sage named Hermes Trismegistus. His teachings, called “Hermetics,” were only taught verbally or in very cryptic writings. In 1908, three Hermetic students wrote these teachings in a book called The Kybalion. Yet, this book was still difficult to understand because of its archaic and confusing language.
Now in Divine Magic,
Doreen Virtue presents a clearly edited version of The Kybalion, written in understandable and modern language. She gives comments and practical suggestions based upon her own success in using Hermetic teachings for healing and manifestation. With Divine Magic, you can master your moods, release negativity, manifest new levels of abundance, and attract wonderful opportunities in all areas of your life.
*Includes a meditative CD

Absolutely divine!! Enjoyed the book very much and love listening to the CD enclosed with the book.
The Seven Sacred Secrets of Manifestation.......2007-07-14
This book is small but powerful, small enough to stuff in a bag and read on the plane from Baltimore to San Diego. It's a little bigger than a 5 x 7 photo, and only108 pages. It includes a CD of Doreen discussing the concepts in the book, so you are getting a double package. (It is NOT a meditative CD like it says in Amazon's writeup.) And, the book and CD are clear and easy to understand, as are all of Doreen's books and CDs. So, if you're going to tell me, "I don't have time to read," then fine. Listen to the CD a couple of times in the car on the way to work until you find the time to read the book. (You know darned well you FIND the time for what you REALLY want to do anyway!)
In this little bombshell, Angel Lady writes her interpretation of the Hermetic manual, The Kybalion, a classic esoteric self-help book, first published in 1908. Hermes Trismegistus was a great spiritual teacher in ancient Egypt who wrote and lectured about the ability of the MIND to create and heal.
The CD has 7 tracks, explaining the Kybalion and the Seven Sacred Secrets. Doreen tells us we all have special powers from the Divine. We can learn how to harness them by studying these secrets.
The 7 Principles are: 1) MENTALISM (the Universe is mental, held in the mind of The All) Spirit is The All; Using the Laws of the Universe to rise above the lower vibrations of pain and suffering to live life in the higher vibrations, and above pain and suffering. 2 ) CORRESPONDENCE "As above, so below and as below, so above". 3 ) VIBRATION (everything vibrates. Slower vibrations are matter; highest are Spiritual. You can hold thoughts and emotions so they vibrate at a higher level and gain control over that which affects your life. Called "Induction and telepathy," you can not only affect your vibration, but directly affect the vibration of others. 4 ) POLARITY (2 extremes of the pole--hot and cold are 2 extremes of the pole "temperature". Move a visualized lever to the side of the pole you want and away from the end you don't want. 5) RHYTHM (everything moves up and down the pole in rhythm). 6) CAUSE and EFFECT (nothing happens by chance) 7) GENDER (recognizing and balancing the male and female energies within you.)
Live life in a higher vibration??? Affect the vibrations of others??? Oh, yeah, right! Sure!
OK. Now that you're done laughing, pick yourself up off the floor and think about it!
The next time you see somebody come into a room with a bad attitude (and please don't let it be you), WATCH the dynamics. OBSERVE! Watch how that one bad attitude has a domino effect on the person who gets dumped on, then the entire room. Then the dumpee dumps on somebody else, and so on. If you're fortunate enough to see the polarity (the opposite), OBSERVE the dynamics when a really pleasant person comes into a room. When you choose to (yes, I said CHOOSE to) be pleasant and happy and at peace, you are living at a higher vibration. That higher vibration not only passes to others but it helps to repel negative vibrations from you. If really you want to do this: 1) BELIEVE it to be so, and 2) Work on getting rid of any negative vibrations you now hold (fear, jealousy, anger, greed, control, etc.) 3) Buy the book and begin to work with these principles. It is NOT an overnight process, but if you're interested, just START!
Note: It takes DAILY work and committment to function at a higher vibration. (By the way, if you have any really negative friends, you may want to think about the amount of time you spend with them.)
Now don't think you can slide by on the little bit I wrote here and not buy the book. I just gave you 50 cents worth of the dollar store version. Get the book. You need the details. Doreen provides a lot of good info here. It's worth the little bit of money. You probably just spent more on your dinner! Spend some $$$ on your MIND and SPIRIT! Good luck on your path forward and God bless! Namaste'
Good basic book for mental magic.......2007-04-18
If this is your first magic book, then I would say it covers a lot. Most of this for me was review. All the principles are the same everywhere- creative visualization, positive thinking. I did read the whole book because it is short, and I like that it was precise.
My favorite part was the lever exercise, to always check your mental levels, that alone for me was worth the book because it's the first time I read about checking your "levels" in your imagination.
COmes with a CD that I thought was a manifestation meditation and all it was was her reading the book on CD/. SO disappointed in that.
Not an Angel Person.......2007-04-18
I am not someone who believes in all the stuff about angels, but I chanced upon this book and am really happy with it. There really isn't any angel stuff in here, just very relevent and to the point Hermanic wisdom. And the wisdom is fantastic. I highly recommend this book to any spiritual seeker

Great for friends and family to have fun with.......2005-04-17
As I opened this book to see what it was about, I was quickly amazed to find that 'my reading' hit exactlly as it was foretold in this book. So I purchased it, though I read my father's reading and none of it was true, it was good to also know the events around his birthdate as well. My family quickly seized the book and every started looking at thier owns. This book is good for parties or get togethers. One can easily sit around a table drinking soda and popcorn as they read each others and compare to the lives they lead. In all, for the price of this book, one will spend hours going through it. =)
The Best of its type -- a great gift.......2002-11-02
I found this to be a truly great book. However, it took me a while to get to this point because, as soon as I got it home, my wife fell in love with it and I couldn't tear it away from her for a long time. The historical perspective combined with the "love interest" capability make it both fun to read and remarkably useful. It is a reference work to be be cherished and used for years.
My small business is planning to give dozens as Christmas gifts to our clients.
A great approach.......2002-10-29
Bought this book as a gift for my wife. She spent 2 hours revieweing all her friends' and relatives' birthdays and found most of them to right on the money. We had a dinner party and it was great fun to read everyone's information. A great entertaining book!
A Fabulous Family Gift.......2002-10-16
I purchased this excellent book while visiting New York.It covers every birthday sign from 1900 to 2001 and is written by 7 astrologers. At 864 pages fully illustrated it is fabulous value.
No dinner party is complete with out this huge source of reference as we discovered, everyone was looking up their birthday and reading it out then looking up their children ,parents and even grandparents. One of our guests became so engrossed we never heard from him the whole evening.
The entries are amazingly accurate the history and special reports fascinating, it also includes your love potential, your luck magnetism and your drive and amition. All the chinese signs are included and it even includes mystical cards.
I can really recommend the book if you have to make a speech at a birthday or special occasion it is invaluable.
I discovered this when making the speech for my mothers 79th birthday. All her history , destiny and personality were so accurate, the speech was a great success.
Book Description
Annie Wilder suspected the funky 100-year-old house was haunted when she saw it for the first time. But nothing could have prepared her for the mischievous and downright scary antics that take place once she, her two children, and her cats move into the rundown Victorian home. Disembodied conversation, pounding walls, glowing orbs, and mysterious whispers soon escalate into full-fledged ghostly visits-provoking sheer terror that, over time, transforms into curiosity. Determined to make peace with her spirit guests, she invites renowned clairvoyant Echo Bodine over and learns fascinating details about each of the entities residing there.
Wilder's gripping tale provides a compelling glimpse into the otherworldly nature of the lonely spirits, protective forces, phantom pets, and departed loved ones that occupy her remarkable home.
Annie Wilder (Minnesota) is a mother and writer. She continues to bravely live in her spooky old house with three cats and numerous ghosts. This is her first book.
Customer Reviews:
Spooky Read!.......2007-10-16
Why she bought this house I will never know but I'm glad she did so she could write the book and tell us all about it. The house was old and spooky to begin with but she fell in love with it - even though it needed a lot of work. The previous owner had been an older man who lived there alone except he rented out some of the rooms. At first I was scared of him but you will soon realize he is not threatening to Annie and her family but some of the other ghosts are. I'm not even sure I believe in ghosts but at night after reading and laying down to sleep I know I had some strange and sometimes disturbing dreams.
Wilder has a nice writing style - very conversational - as though she is telling you all this over a cup of tea. I found the book delightful and was sorry for it to end. I am looking forward to reading other books by her and I hope everyone enjoys the book as much as I did.
Not Good........2007-09-01
A. Wilder must have been on some heavy drugs or something. This book started off fairly decent, then progressivly worse and worse. That astral BS simply turned me off completely. Grave's End was a lot better..
House of woo-woo.......2007-08-07
I found Wilder's account interesting not so much for the ghost story as for her complete credulity and confidence in her own abilities-- not only to understand spiritual entities, but to *control* them.
She assumes spirits respond to her every thought and action, protect her home and family as requested, and go away when she says. Wilder always thinks she's accurately perceived and interpreted the spiritual "energy" in her home; she believes without hesitation pretty much anything she's told about the supposed haunting; and she assumes her dreams are real. She's awesome, but not really in a positive way-- more in a "good god, Annie, your hubris is absolutely outrageous" kind of way.
The visual phenomena she describes aren't uncommon-- many people see geometric light shapes and patterns when half-awake-- there are medical explanations for that (Wilder thinks the lights are sent to teach her something in the spiritual realm).
Great reading!.......2007-06-22
I had heard about this book so I decided to give it a try. I was NOT disappointed. Annie Wilder is a talented and BRAVE lady. I would love to meet her one day just to hear more about her encounters. Read this book and you won't be able to put it down.
Love it!.......2007-05-15
This book was fascinating from the beginning. I read it in two sittings. I've had experiences with ghosts since I was a child. In fact, the house my parents lived in when I was born was haunted by the couple who lived there before them. This mystery of a book not only intrigued me, but brought back memories as well. A fine book worth anyone's shelf.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book On Feng Shui PERIOD!.......2006-04-06
I practice the Black Sect Tantric Tibetan Buddhist Feng Shui method but this book covers the Compass method also. After reading this delightful little book I realized that I had many changes to do in my home. Some of the other books I have read on Feng Shui were not as clear as this one is. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who practices any type of Feng Shui because it is easy to use and understand, I do however recommend that you download a picture of the Bagua to assist you in your practice.
[...]
Great supplemental reference guide.......2003-11-03
This book is best used as a quick reference guide to Feng Shui! It's fun to read through and full of information, but it's not meant to be an introductory book for beginners. It's great as a reference though, it's super easy to look up information on the fly.
Mini Glossary.......2003-03-20
Feng Shui Dos & Taboos is like the glossary that you wish the big Feng Shui books had in the back pages. Though a little pricey for the amount of content, it's ok as a quick answer guide.
Cute Little Book.......2003-03-06
This is a cute little book that is definately geared to those who practice "Compass" forms of Feng Shui. Some of the tips made me chuckle and some I marked for reference and possible usage. For what ever form of Feng Shui you practice, I'd say some, or a good many of Ms. Wong's do's and don't's are adaptable to your form, but the book does require some knowledge and back ground in Feng Shui, or you might be instituting the wrong cure. This little book has a somewhat more light-hearted approach then I expected, but it is a good antidote to those ponderous and deadly dull Feng Shui authors/practitioners who think they know it all and spend their time intolerantly bashing anyone who does not practice their exact form of Feng Shui. I would still highly recommend Karen Rauch Carter and Stephen Skinner for your first forays into Feng Shui, and after you become more proficient Ms. Wong's book will have it's place.
Great quick reference guide........2003-02-18
Of all the Feng Shui books we own, We use this little book much more frequently then any of the others. I keep in the kitchen drawer and refer to it all the time. My other Feng Shui books stay on the shelf and are rarely used after I have read them. but this little book is such a quick easy organized book that we refer to it all the time. Questions from my family are easily answered, like "I just got this plant at the nursery, where is the best location?" It takes me just a second to look it up instead of an hour checking larger feng shui books that are not organized well. It is a great practical quick reference for anyone who enjoys Feng Shui

Richly hued kitchens and cheerful decoraction.......2007-10-06
If you have a Spanish style home, or are merely interested in decoration, this is simply a wonderful book. The kitchens are all brilliant with color and festive with decoration. Lots of tile, alcoves, and sunny spaces captivate the eye. This is happy book, and full of inspiring ideas.
Another beautiful book in this great series.......2007-08-11
I'm addicted to Mexican style, colors, and design aesthetics. This newest book in the "Mexi-" series focuses entirely on kitchens. The photos are profuse with color, light, and (if you love this stuff the way I do) decorating ideas!
As a bonus, if you own all the books in this series (Mexicolor, Mexicasa, In a Mexican Garden, and Mexicocina), they themselves become a terrific Mexican-style design accent placed together on your bookshelf. :-)
Wonderfully Informative, 'Ole!.......2007-04-05
I ordered Mexicocina because I was looking for decorating ideas for my kitchen. But, I found so much more! This book is not only equipped with beautiful Mexican kitchens, but also the history behind the kitchens, and tasty recipes. Me and my husband's favorite country to visit is Mexico. This book gave us some great information on bed and breakfasts in different areas of Mexico.
This is a great coffee table book too!
Thank you,
Adrianna
A Functional Coffee Table Book !.......2007-01-11
My husband and I are building a new home in Mexico and wanted to make sure we kept it as authentic as possible, thus the book orders. This particular book is filled with spectacular photos of Mexican kitchens ranging from the most spectacular to the more common. Each page is filled with building ideas as well as decorating inspirations. Who would have thought of collecting beautifully carved wooden spoons for a wall display ! The authors include much narrative explaining background of the kitchens and various decorations/selections, as well as history. Everyone will enjoy the brilliant colors and artwork as each page is turned.
A Fascinating Tour of the Kitchens of Mexico.......2007-01-10
The pictures are glorious and the text is very well written, concise and informative. I have travelled to many of these kitchens with Betsy McNair and it's like taking the tour all over again. There's no better guide to Mexico than Ms. McNair. She really knows the history and the people. If you can't go with her in person then the book is the next best thing.

Spend some time in the House of the Spirits.......2007-09-20
In the House of the Spirits there are love affairs, hot air balloons, dog fur rugs, an old man who breaks the telephone when he gets bad news - my coworker who I would often share parts of the book with thinks that it sounds like the television show Arrested Development. Arrested Development, maybe, if you take some individual incidences out of context - I was reminded more of Colleen McCullough's the Thornbirds, just on a different continent. The women are strong and complex who surivive with patience and outlasting while the men exercise their brunt, power, money and influence. But there is humor in this book - which I believe Allende uses to remind us that sometimes humor is what allows humans to survive day to day in situations that they cannot change. In contrast there is also immense suffering. The House of Spirits is a saga, and don't start to read it unless you are prepared to invest yourself in the Trueba family. Allende's characters possess such different and intriguing personalities and emotions that as a reader you are able to understand every character's point of view and realize why they do what they do - both the good and the bad guys. At several points I wanted to laugh and cry and cheer out loud. The House of the Spirits is quite personal to the Trueba family.
Amazing!.......2007-07-14
I normally would not have picked out this book but i'm really happy I did. It was on the list of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You die by Dr Boxall and I was trying to read some of the books he recommended. The House of the Spirits is a story of a family and it's few generations. In the background it shows some historic evens the way they influenced their lives. The story focuses mainly on the women of the family, showing their strength and inner as well as outer beuty. The book is very detailed and very captivating. I would definitely recommend it.
great read.......2007-05-14
This woman can really write, create memorable characters that stick with you long after you finish the book. A terrific story teller. Not to be missed.
I love my 1st south american book.......2007-04-16
I read this book without the baggage of having read other Latin American writers, knowing anything about the History of Chile and not being too politically inclined. Hence I was able to thoroughly enjoy the novel over the 3 or 4 generations. I was abit distracted by the too many sexual scenes (voluntary or otherwise), the mystic powers of some of the characters and grotesque scenes like the death of Esteban's mother, the sick Amanda, the headless Nivea. My best character was Esteban Trueba as he does embody a reality for many people who struggle hard and sometimes end up not fulfilled...failed families, failed friendships, failed dreams and failed ideals. Deep inside he is not a very bad person and infact I dont think that Allende wanted to show him as a villain and at the end of the novel she gives him a befitting departure. I found Clara a bit too unreal and the change from the really dependent woman to a matriach developed too quickly. I will definetely re read the book and it has developed my thirst for other Latin American literature.
An Excellent Piece of Literature.......2007-04-05
The storyline has it all: love, mystery, relationships, revenge, and more. Meanwhile the author offers her political views, but doesn't force the reader to accept them.

Book Description
Flora knows better than to take shortcuts in her family home, Crackpot Hall--the house has eleven thousand rooms, and ever since her mother banished the magickal butler, those rooms move around at random. But Flora is late for school, so she takes the unpredictable elevator anyway. Huge mistake. Lost in her own house, she stumbles upon the long-banished butler--and into a mind-blowing muddle of intrigue and betrayal that changes her world forever.
Full of wildly clever plot twists, this extraordinary first novel establishes Ysabeau Wilce as a compelling new voice in teen fantasy.
Customer Reviews:
once of the best of 2007 so far!.......2007-08-18
Well, after that title, there isn't much more to say except that Flora is a
wonderfully loveable girl and I think you'll enjoy getting to know her!
Oh, all right, I do have more to say:) Flora's father is mad, her mother is a general and the best line in a book I've ever read is in chapter 2. This is a strange and beautifully unique tale. This might be a hard sell for some of the teens I know, but it won't stop me from recommending it to everyone.
Is the world ready for Wilce?.......2007-07-14
Here's a fact: Ysabeau S. Wilce is profoundly original. If you read all the customer reviews here, you'll get the sense that this is not your formula fantasy. But let's make that point more clearly--you will never read another story like this one (unless, possibly, it's her next one, which we all eagerly anticipate).
This is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of what could, and certainly should, be the next story franchise that graduates from cult status to mainstream blockbuster. Wilce doesn't sugar coat the risks of adolescence: she dips them in ice cream, lights them on fire, and serves the reader a flaming torch of strange wonder.
Laughter and thrilling excitement are delightful companions all through this romp. The subtitle gives a sense of the former, but don't underestimate Wilce's storytelling: great characters in real trouble make for great reading, and Flora is a heroine who speaks equally to the reality as well as the ambitions of young people.
Oh yes, and while this is not specifically a unique observation, I'd also like to note that it is always refreshing to find a fantasy that does not take place in something that could pass for Northern Europe.
Waiting for Number 2.......2007-07-11
I'm not sure yet how I feel about this book. I like it but then again I don't. What I like about it is the originality of the story. The world and its characters are fully developed and very interesting, especially Flora. What I really like about Flora is that she is not your average cookie-cutter, in-your-face, outspoken heroine who saves herself by swinging a sword. Flora on the other hand has self-confidence issues, often doubts her own abilities and has the same faults as any other regular teenager, which make her character more genuine. What I don't like about this novel is that the story itself seems to move rather unsteadily. It slows down then speeds up then slows down again. I also had a little trouble understanding some of the magic or "Current" lingo. A short glossary could have helped that. There are also a lot of cliffhangers that hopefully will turn up in the next book. All in all this book was good but not great, hopefully the second will be better.
Original, spirited, and funny.......2007-06-04
Ysabeau Wilce has created a truly original imaginary world refreshingly free of the cliches of the fantasy genre. What's more, she's provided the perfect tour guide to this world: Flora Fyrdraaca, an irreverent, eager, believably adolescent narrator scheming to escape the expectations of her family and become a Ranger--a magic-using secret agent--instead of following family tradition into the army, madness, and doom. Assigned to write a speech in praise of her noble House, Flora narrowly rejects openings like "Crackpot Hall has 11,000 rooms but only one potty." Indeed, the ancestral pile has seen better days, partly for reasons bound up in the power plays of Flora's illustrious mother, a famous general who tolerates no insubordination and has disabled the magical Butler that should keep the house in order. Motivated partly by sympathy and partly by the desire to have someone else muck out the stable, Flora sets herself a quest to restore the Butler to his rightful place, but she soon discovers that the price of a little help with the housework can be, almost literally, her soul. Flora's quirky comic voice always keeps the danger of her predicament and the dysfunctionality of her family from weighing down the story, which bounces lightly along to its conclusion--or rather, temporary conclusion, because this is the first volume of a trilogy. I'm no Young Adult, and this is a Young Adult book, but I can hardly wait for Volume 2.
Cliché Free, Fresh Fantasy.......2007-06-03
I purchased this book for my daughter after reading Charles de Lint's favorable review in Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine (he's rarely steered me wrong) and after growing impatient waiting for her to begin it, I picked it up to skim the first few pages for myself. There was no skimming; I was immediately absorbed and read the book in one sitting. There was no tired "hero's journey" cliché where the orphan, unaware of his great heritage, begins on a lowly farm. There were innovative and captivating devices, smooth wordsmithing, and the kind of intelligent, brave female protagonist I like my daughter to spend time with. Be sure to check out the author's website and blog.

You Can Heal Your Life Companion Book .......2007-08-27
Just because it is similar doesn't lessen the work. I have been a facilitator of "self healing" groups for over 15 years. Of the dozens of authors there is none that brings the message forward as simply and beautifully as Ms Hay. If you can only own one book, get "You can Heal Your Life" don't let its simplicity fool you. I have purchased so many dozen copies for clients, and friends.(and i keep coming back to it over and over again. If this information is taken to heart or embraced everthing will change for you.
The companion book and or the workbook are great additions but worth it. You are worth it.(inventory books like this help you see patters, behaviors and new ways of approaching them. I haven't listed to in some years but "GET any CD" on :self healing: and "what I believe" and prepare to be uplifted. Its like the great ladys states :"change your thinking and change your life"

It's the SAME THING..........2007-03-28
... as You Can Heal Your Life. It's disappointing because it's pretty obvious the author just wants to make money. Oh, sorry, but she isn't qualified to help us heal- find a therapist!
I Cannot Speak for ANYONE ELSE.......2005-05-11
I enjoy the exercises in this book. Instead of writing on the pages, I use post it notes in the event I may feel the need to revisit the exercises at a later point and time.
It may be a remake of another book, but I don't have that other book, just the "You Can Heal Your Life" book itself.
This is a good thinking exercise book to help you work through your problems and change old thinking patterns that hold you back.
Same Book, New Title.......2003-01-16
As stated by another reviwer, this is basically the same book as the earlier "You Can Heal your Life Workbook." My personal preference with this type of book, in which you are writing and doing exercises, is to have a basic, soft-cover, easy-to-use format. This version is printed as a fancy gift-y type of book, with shiny full-color pages and a lot of (to me) distracting and unnecessary illustrations. So...if you like pretty, gift-y books, get this version. If not, get a copy of the earlier version. But YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY BOTH!
I'd have liked to give this a better rating... but I can't........2002-05-30
I love Louise Hay books. I own almost all of her stuff.
She writes in a very down to earth way, in very clear easy to understand language. Her books also work! I have dealt with and overcome several issues by using her books.
However, with this Compaion book, I have to ask myself "Why?" It is almost identical in nature to the You Can Heal Your life Workbook. If you own that, there is little need to purchase this companion. While there are three or so new "chapters", the lay out, and most of the content is the same as the Workbook.
I was a bit confused by the other review on this book, because this book is almost journal-like in nature. There are sections for each issue in your life, with affirmations (Louise loves her affirmations), checklists, and then questions that you answer pretty much in journal form. Louise also includes exercises to perform to help you to open up to the affirmations that will help you heal your life.
Louise has before published several books that are almost identical in nature to previously published books. Be careful when you're purchasing her stuff. Just because the title is different doesn't mean the book is. Check the content out well first! It'll save you some money.

A True Ghost Story
"You leave us alone; we'll leave you alone."
When Elaine Mercado and her first husband bought their home in Brooklyn, N. Y., in 1982, they had no idea that they and their two young daughters were embarking on a thirteen-year nightmare.
Within a few days of moving in, Elaine and her older daughter began to experience the sensation of being watched. Then came scratching noises and weird smells, followed by voices whispering, maniacal laughter, shadowy figures scurrying along baseboards, and small balls of light bouncing along the ceilings. From the beginning of the haunting, "suffocating dreams" were experienced by everyone except the younger daughter. These eventually accelerated to physical aggression directed at Elaine and both the girls.
This book is the true story of how one family tried to cope with living in a haunted house. It also describes how, with the help of parapsychologist Dr. Hans Holzer and medium Marisa Anderson, the family discovered the tragic and heartbreaking secrets buried in the house at Grave's End.
I struggle to open my eyes, but achieve nothing but frustration and failure. I am not asleep. I am fully conscious, in a state of panic unthinkable during the day intolerable in the dark of night, held prisoner by some tortured, invisible presence, insistent on abruptly invading my slumber. The more I struggle toward freedom, the more I am pushed into the mattress, perspiring, heart palpitating, a scream involuntarily silenced within my throat. Some nights I experience my skin being stroked while I fight to regain control of my body, my sight. Thank God, this was not one of those nights. Tonight it lets me open my eyes, shaken but unviolated, frightened, but not as frightened as I know I can become.

Whoa!.......2007-08-24
What an amazing book. Elaine Mercado takes you on her journey of disbelief and finding "logical reasons" for the things that were happening in her house. I, myself, shared her skepticism at first and like her I was forced to face the ultimately indisputable fact that her place was haunted. Her husband proves to be the ultimate example of how we will cling to what we believe to be reality so desperately that when the "impossible" happens we just ignore it. Read the book and you'll know what I mean. This is the only true haunting story so far that has scared the daylights out of me. The journey of Elaine Mercado and her family is terrifying but also enlightening and in the end the truth of what was behind what was happening makes great sense thanks to the logical Hans Holtzer. I bought another copy just so I could lend it to more people. I recommend this book highly.
A True Ghost Story.......2007-07-13
This is a very good book if your like books about true ghost stories.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for somthing deeper than you would get if you got a book that had a collection of ghost stories.
foreword by the famous Parapsychologist and Author, Prof. Hans Holzer.......2007-05-09
It was supposed to be their dream house, an escape from apartment dwelling, home sweet home. It turned out to be a nightmare that didn't go away even when you slept with the lights on. In 1982 Elaine Mercado, her husband and two daughters moved into the house they had bought in Brooklyn, N.Y. With her husband's business in the upper two floors, Elaine was rarely alone in the house, but she never felt alone anyway; she had a constant feeling of being watched.
Over the course of 12 years there would be a great deal more than feelings of being watched. The house was haunted. It took Elaine quite a long time to admit that fact; admitting it would make it real. But there were dreams that she and her daughter both experienced, dreams that were suffocating in nature. In fact it felt as though something were holding them down, pressing them into the bed to such an extent that they were unable to move and at times, unable to breath. Balls of light danced about the house and small blurry shapes of shadow crept along the floorboards. A figure of mist would sometimes pass by one daughter's bedroom door and at times there would be whispering, right in their ears, of things like, "You leave us alone, and we'll leave you alone."
After years of not getting a decent night's sleep, years of feeling terrified on an almost constant basis, Elaine does some digging into the past of the house. Many stories are uncovered, but none of them are very comforting. The decision is made to call in a psychic investigator. Someone had to know what was going on and how to make it stop.
This is a true story, told by Elaine herself, a registered nurse and a woman of great strength of character. She admits her terrible fear and frustration in an effort to let people know that they are not alone in situations such as these. The lost spirits that shared her home were in great misery and pleading for help, though in ways that would scare even the bravest of people. It took an understanding to help the souls that Elaine did not posses at the time. This book is her passing on of the knowledge that even challenges such as this can be remedied.
The book goes into great detail of the haunting and the writing is such that you truly feel the hair standing up on the back of your neck. You may feel a desire to leave the lights on at bedtime, or the need to look over your shoulder for the feeling of being watched is contagious. You may even go so far as to do a great deal of research before purchasing your next home.
A foreword by the famous Parapsychologist and Author, Prof. Hans Holzer, who incidentally played a large part in the resolution of Elaine's unwanted houseguests, lends additional validity to the book, but the work is well written and most definitely believable.
Excellent read..though with many questions unanswered.......2007-05-08
I just finished reading this book yesterday at the beach...and I have to say that as it got to the point where I would only read this book during the daytime....just as the author later states in writing this book she would only write/edit it during the day because her own story still was an uneasy experience for her to read about! The author drew you into her story with such ease that you actually felt a part of it all. My only caveats are (don't get me wrong -- this was a highly-effective and scary read) during the "cleansing" of the house and the self-interest reaction of her eldest daughter, and when the author attends classes on the paranormal, she doesn't say whether or not she learned anything there....and was able to apply it to her situation...give her a better understanding of sorts. I was half expecting her to reveal her home situation to the class professor to get some sort of insight into her situation. But, again, this is not delved into. Another is the one question you're left to ponder at the end of the story: after the house has been professionally "cleansed", she is still scared of the past happenings, and unfortunately for her, "new" apparations, etc., commence.....and yet, she still chooses to live there. I just can't comprehend that one. The epilogue states that she is still living there......though I just read the book and I know it came out many years ago....one would think that peace of mind (and house) would prevail and she would decide to sell, and live happily ever after with the new hubby.....elsewhere. Great geographic location for her...close to her work....but having to live with the souls of the dear departed indefinitely? Oy!
Graves End.......2007-03-19
This book was very good.you really start to feel as if you know this family.
the things they had to go through in this house was pretty scary.
the part I thought was really creepy was the story about her cat and the carpet that was strange. anyone who likes to read about haunted houses this is the book for you. it will keep you reading until the last page!

When we depend less on industrially produced consumer goods, we can live in quiet places. Our bodies become vigorous; we discover the serenity of living with the rhythms of the earth. We cease oppressing one another.
Oppression hasn't quite disappeared in the 30 years since Alicia Bay Laurel wrote these words, but, thanks to the enduring legacy of the back-to-the-land movement and the possibilities of telecommuting alike, more and more people are living in the "quiet places" Laurel celebrates. Living on the Earth was a well-worn (and bestselling) bible for the urban hipsters who fled the city and took up such pursuits as organic farming and leather tanning in the early 1970s; its author, a musician and artist who now makes her home in Hawaii, made their acclimation to country life just a little bit easier with her user-friendly instructions on such matters as how to keep gophers from invading the veggie patch and how to get rid of those nasty lice that once served as the mascots of bohemian existence.
Lice or no, the countryside still has its undeniable charms. The reissue of Laurel's handwritten, simply illustrated manual will appeal to anyone contemplating a new life beyond the city--or merely seeking pointers on how to simplify daily life. Things have changed, of course, since Laurel first self-published her zeitgeist-drenched book in 1970. Where the original edition had seed-to-bud instructions for growing marijuana, the reissue now comes with a modest disclaimer in which Laurel admits to having lost her taste for the stuff decades ago--but it also comes with a ringing endorsement for the use of hemp fiber and paper as a planet-friendly measure of economy. Laurel also juxtaposes her folk remedies for common ailments with a friendly reminder to head to the doctor if the pain is really bad, the kind of advice once shunned by the proudly self-sufficient barefoot medics, manuals in hand. Still, though updated here and there, Living on the Earth retains its recipes for everything from making Moroccan djellabas to molding scented candles to delivering a baby in the privacy of one's tipi, all good things to know.
More than a blast from the past--although it certainly is that--Laurel's book is still highly useful. And it's just plain fun. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Celebrations, storm warnings, formulas, recipes, and country dances-renowned author Alicia Bay Laurel harvests them all in this unforgettable book first published more than thirty years ago. Living on the Earth is for people who would rather chop wood for fire than work behind a desk to pay the electric company. It's for people who want the best recipe for lavender soap or huckleberry jam. It's for people who want to make their own clothing, play guitar, learn woodcarving, gardening, canning and drying food, and natural first aid methods. The book has no chapters; no rigid structures or rules. It grew naturally out of the lessons the author has learned, and which she shares now with yet another enthusiastic generation. Living on the Earth is a beautiful book to see and read, as well as a spiritually uplifting work whose simplicity radiates warmth and promotes serenity and goodwill to all those who encounter it. The large format paperback is entirely written in Alicia's cursive script and illustrated on every page with her line drawings. Alicia's innovative illustration and book design styles have been enthusiastically emulated in dozens of books and greeting cards. Alicia Bay Laurel has passionately followed her muse since early childhood. She was just twenty years old when Living on the Earth was originally published; the book would go on to become a best-selling, trend-setting manual for natural, conscious living. The book celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2000. Alicia still sings, plays guitar, writes, and enjoys life in Hawaii.

Over-age flower child. .......2006-12-09
I almost fell over in my chair when I found this book was still selling. I believe I purchased it over 30 years ago. It really is an amazing book and leads one to believe they really could live a relatively simple lifestyle.
My life in the intervening 30 years has not been simple. For some reason, one of the main things I remember from this book was after delivering your baby through natural childbirth, which I did in a hospital, you can either bury the placenta or cook and eat it to restore your strength. It really takes one back to another era, a time when we all thought everything was possible. Then the 80's came upon us and it was all over.
For anyone who is interested in sewing, another of my favorite books of that time is "Son Of Hassele-Free Sewing". It explains in a simple manner how to copy clothing you already own to make new clothes. It is an excellent book, which I still refer to.
Peace.
Amazing!.......2006-08-14
This is one of the best books EVER written. It has helped me to survive and thrive on this Earth and gives me advice on practically anything I need to know! Perfect for those who need to settle down and be more in tune with their bodies and Mother Nature. Alicia Bay Laurel is an amazing artist, activist, and author that I look up to much indeed.
I have found the Hippie Bible!!.......2006-01-01
I discovered this book in a book store about a week ago. It was $18.95 and sold out! I went home to Amazon and found them here for $5.99!! I bought 15 copies for X mas presents and a few just to have for emergency purposes. This book is not only filled with amazing ways to live a better life here its also filled with beautiful illustrations. This is one book I will use forever and pass on for generations to come. No matter if its 1969 or 2069, this hippie bible will always come in handy!
No left turn unstoned !.......2005-08-16
Amazing to think that she was a teenager when she began writing this "Bible" of natural living. Not only does it still hold up after 30+ years...but it makes even more sense now in the 21st century.
I would give it to my children or grandparents with equal enthusiasm.
Alicia Bay gets the ultimate hippie chick award!
Fun Guide to Living on the Earth.......2004-12-04
After waking very early this very morning, I started to read Living on the Earth and was halfway through by breakfast. While I had considered a hand-lettered book to be more difficult to read, I could not have been more wrong.
The hand lettering brought a sense of comfort and the contents reminded me of my childhood in Africa. If you lived in a rural area during the 60s and 70s, many of the items in this book will be very familiar. If you love handwritten letters from friends, then this book will quickly find a place in your heart.
So, there I was stirring a 5-grain oatmeal mixture for breakfast and I looked down and caught a glimpse of my painted toes reflecting in the glass oven door. Suddenly I was transported to the years of my childhood where we build our own tree houses, watched carrots grow, milked cows, raised chickens, learned how to sew, experienced tick bite fever and snacked on friendship cake while walking barefoot on the warm earth.
Living on the Earth is an enchanting read filled with lyricism and whimsy. It is written in a spontaneous style and the topics range from soap making to building rocking cradles out of barrels. Alicia Bay Laurel has illustrated the entire book and it is a completely personal experience.
Some of the highlights include backpacking tips, making hammocks with macramé, making your own soaps, sewing peasant blouses, making your own moccasins, and building a kiln for making pottery.
There is also information on how to make candles, bamboo flutes, bean bags, clothing, rose petal jam, organic diet soda, vanilla extract, dried fruits, nut butters, ice cream, sunflower milk, miso, roasted soy beans, smoked fish, bread, beef jerky, sour dough starter, steamed acorns, plum pudding and herbal tinctures.
As I sit here with my lovely cozy heated blanket and fluffy slippers I can dream about living out in the wild as my washing machine swishes about with the Seventh Generation laundry soap I recently found at a health food store. This book has many ideas you can incorporate into your normal home life. You don't have to live in a commune to enjoy the information about essential oils, nature-inspired products or environmental issues. The author recommends things like hemp paper and explores the many uses of apple cider vinegar and pumpkin seeds.
To say the least, I was intrigued. This is definitely a must-read book for everyone interested in natural remedies. There are recipes for making herbal tinctures and you may find yourself looking for "myrrh." If you love to cook you may be intrigued by the recipe for Plum Pudding.
Alicia Bay Laurel is writing a modern sequel for the global family. "Still Living on the Earth" will be published in 2005. This book was updated in 1999 and is filled with useful addresses and websites. I loved the list of "more books that are still valuable 30 years later!" A helpful index completes this fun guide to living on the earth.
I loved reading this book! While reading you may find yourself becoming nostalgic, enthusiastic about hiking or even making lists to buy a variety of herbs.
