5 out of 5 stars Sure to delight!.......2002-03-05

I recently ordered this book, and what can I say? It's another excellent book in the Gooseberry Patch collection. "Country Friends Good Times," explores and celebrates friendship and is packed with neat gift ideas and homey treats, sure to make a friend, family member or spouse feel loved!

There are fewer recipes in this book than in other books in the Gooseberry Patch collection, but the charming (and copyable) pages are filled with over 205 delightful and cheery craft ideas, recipes, and just plain kind thoughts which will delight everyone.

Don't miss this one, if you love the cute illustrations in the books by Vickie & JoAnn. You won't be disappointed. =-)

Book Description

If you've ever wondered what happened to Christine Moore from "God on a Harley," you won't want to miss this touching new sequel!

In "Joyride," Christine has done some serious spiritual backsliding over the last ten years. Marriage and motherhood have changed her identity and challenged her previous beliefs about love and romance. The demands of family and career have buried the truths she once knew beneath a mountain of resentment, dirty laundry, and endless bas of groceries.

Then, on one of her late-night excursions to the supermarket, Christine runs into Joe again... and everything changes.

I love this author. She writes such wonderful stories. I find this book is great for women who are not happy with their lives. It is a great example of how we can completely change our lives by changing our own attitudes and views on life. It also makes you think about what it really important in life. I'm recommending this to all my friends.

Tough to put down once you start reading. Ketchum is very good. This harrowing tale kicks butt all the way through.

2 out of 5 stars Ketchum's wrote better books........2005-02-11

This book wasn't that great. Ok, it was a good topic, sounded interesting...was interesting but then it just started going down hill. The idea of some weird guy witnessing a murder and being excited about it-is weird enough. Then to have this guy go after the murderers because he was so excited about the murder they committed is crazy. That idea of this sounded like an edge of your seat book. It seemed somewhere in the middle this things changed. It started by diving into the cops mind about his problems when the story was about the murderers and the psycho that kidnaps them. I kept wondering why I was getting so much information about this cop...what role did he play in this? When the ending finally came around I didn't even know it. I turned the page to go on to the next chapter and there were no other chapters. It was over. I did one of those things were you read the last few paragraphs wondering, "did I miss something?" So, the plot was good enough but I can't say this was worth too much of your time.

5 out of 5 stars JOY RIDE - A Review By Steve Vernon.......2004-10-22

Set aside a Sunday for this running slip noose of a novel. You'll read it in a sitting, I guarantee. Forget about the munchies, forget about the customary cold beer. Just dive right in and chew through this nasty little thriller, written with the vigor of a power-diving white shark.

I give this nasty little novel a fast breathless Yowza!!

Buy it. Read it. Catch your breath.

4 out of 5 stars Fasten your seatbelts for this joyride.......2002-09-16

Jack Ketchum knows how to write a good horror story. There is nothing exceptional or highly original about the plot of Joyride, but it is a very satisfying read. The book opens with a murder. Carole has been a victim throughout her entire life; her ex-husband Howard had abused her just about every way possible. The only way to finally get rid of him, she and her new man Lee decide, is to kill him and make it look like an accident. They think they pull off a perfect crime, but they do not realize at the time that someone else has watched the whole thing, someone even more evil and perverted than Howard. Wayne Lock has killed things throughout his life, but he has always stopped just short of killing a human being. He sees Carole and her ex-husband as his deliverance, kidnapping them, trying to learn from them what murder feels like. The end result is a murder spree of epic proportions, with Carol and Lee his reluctant "witnesses."

One criticism Ketchum is vulnerable to is characterization, but he does a pretty good job of it in this novel. Oddly enough, this is most evident in the character of the policeman pursuing the mass murdering Wayne Lock. He knows Carole's history, and she reminds him a lot of his own ex-wife; it is he, however, who makes the most significant realization about himself at the novel's conclusion. We get snips and pieces of Wayne Lock's history, enough to explain the murderous intensity of his personality but not enough to truly understand his reasoning. Carole and Lee are not developed fully in my mind, but this seems to me to be a positive in the context of this novel. I never felt strongly negative or positive toward them; they moved in a haze of contradiction where good and evil continuously wove in amongst each other.

There is plenty of carnage in this book--that's pretty much a given with Ketchum. Another given, and this is what makes Ketchum such a great horror writer, is a brutally honest plot that will not cheat the reader at the end. It is hard to predict a Ketchum ending, which is the main reason I respect him greatly as an author. The cavalry doesn't appear magically over the hill to save the day--instead, things happen the way they would most likely happen in real life--good and evil are second-string players in this game; reality itself determines the fate of Ketchum's characters. This makes for a gripping read, even in a case such as this where the storyline is nothing remarkably original.

3 out of 5 stars Ketchum and Serial Killers.......2002-07-16

"Joyride," another Jack Ketchum book I read recently, is a serial killer novel. I think at some point all horror writers are required to write such a book. It must be embedded in their first contracts with a publishing house-"Thou shalt write a book concerning serial killers!" Obviously, this becomes a problem when it is done to death over a period of time. If you really want to read about serial killers, check out the numerous encyclopedias and collections on real life killers and psychos. They tell you the real story, and most of the writers crib from them anyway. In the case of "Joyride," Ketchum certainly did crib from a true account.

Poor Carole and Lee. They want to be together but Howard, Carole's ex-husband, insists on making his presence felt even when he isn't welcome. Howard feels that his propensity towards intimidation and forcing himself on Carole should merit reconciliation. Lee and Carole have other ideas. After police intervention has no effect on curbing Howard's violence, Lee broaches the idea of killing Howard. Carole goes along with this novel plan and the murder is done. Unfortunately for our two lovers, someone sees them do the deed. Even worse, this someone, Wayne Lock, is a sociopath with his own sick fantasies about murder. Wayne feels a sort of camaraderie for the two, and decides to pay them a visit. The rest of the book concerns these three people as Wayne goes on a killing spree. A subplot involves a local cop and his family problems.

This is a pretty straightforward book. The plot is simple, as is the prose. Surprisingly, for a Ketchum novel, the murders aren't exercises in over-the-top gore. A few of them are upsetting, especially the murder of Howard. But overall, they lack the usual Ketchum punch.

Also surprising is the character development. All of them are well drawn, with the exception of Wayne. Why write a serial killer novel and not develop the serial killer? This is not to say that Wayne isn't developed at all; he is. But not nearly as well as he should have been. More background on why Wayne is the way he is would have helped. How about more details about his messed up childhood? That always has the potential for some serious horror. Alas, `tis not so.

The ending of the book set off alarm bells in my head. I recognized the parallels to the Howard Unruh case almost immediately. For those unfamiliar with Howard Unruh, let me fill you in. Unruh, a WWII veteran, went on a shooting rampage in his neighborhood. Unruh was settling scores with neighbors who had done him wrong; he even wrote down the various "crimes" his fellow man committed against him (just as Wayne does in this book). Unruh's shooting spree left scores dead or wounded. When the cops finally arrived, Unruh holed up in his house. A reporter called Unruh in order to find out what was going on. Unruh's answer was, "I have to go now, I'm kind of busy right now." Wayne says the same thing when the cops call him at his house.

For a Ketchum novel, "Joyride" is about average. I expected a little more out of it than it delivered. It's still a good way to pass a few hours (the book is very short and a quick read). I'm slowly working my way up to "The Girl Next Door," supposedly the roman-a-clef of Ketchum's literary catalogue.

FROM FAST FRIENDS TO FAST GIRLS...

For shy, awkward Stella Gold, the only good thing to come out of junior high gym class was her friendship with Emily Martin, the effortlessly cool rebel. Emily is now a trendy New York fashion designer with a penchant for affairs with all kinds of inappropriate men. Stella, a schoolteacher, has never strayed far from her provincial Pennsylvania hometown. Yet these two, now in their twenties, have shared everything, from bonding over the mystery of tampons and Milli Vanilli T-shirts to swapping stories about first loves and one-night stands. But there's one secret Stella has never told her best friend....

When Emily calls from London with startling news, Stella is faced with a choice. She must either confront a long-buried demon or let Emily make a giant mistake that just might end their friendship for good.

JOYRIDE is a captivating novel about best friends speeding along on the road of life -- unaware of the dangerous curves that await them.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book, Great Read!.......2006-02-28

My best friend gave me this book as a gift and it was amazing! I loved this book and never wanted it to end. If you're looking for a great read, you've found it with this book! Lindsay Faith Rech does an excellent job... there's never a dull moment!!

5 out of 5 stars Deeply engaging!.......2005-10-10

Wow! This is not the typical chick lit fare! I could not put this one down and ending up reading and finishing it late in the night. This novel has a depth and sensitivity toward the characters that was totally unexpected. I was thinking this would be a nice light Red Dress Ink read, but it totally surprised me! I really cared for and ached with the characters. I felt their struggles, their vulnerabilities. Previously I had enjoyed Rech's first novel, Losing It much more than average chick lit, but this book surpassed even her first one. I will certainly pick up any of Rech's future books! Thanks for providing chick lit that has real substance and heart!!

5 out of 5 stars truly a joyride from start to finish...........2005-03-22

Although I don't mean "joyride" in that it was literally a joyous book. It definitely had darker moments - much darker. This is *not* your ordinary "chick-lit" fiction. The storyline was engrossing though. Reading about Stella and Emily's friendship and how it evolved over the years from being barely teenagers to almost 30 year olds will make most women relive days with their own "best friend" and what kept them together over the years and what might have torn them apart. These two girls/women were closer than sisters - felt almost like sisters for most of their lives. As you read about all they have weathered together you wonder what could possibly be so terrible as to rip apart an almost life-long friendship. And you wonder whether or not this "thing" that is happening (it is kept a secret til almost the end) is going to be the death of it. There is a resolution, but you will have to read the book to see.
I highly recommend this book - it was a wonderful story. The dark side of it made it all the better.

4 out of 5 stars A contemporary look at friendship.......2005-03-22

In the first chapter Rech gets you with a premise that makes you want to keep reading - why is Stella flying to see Emily in Europe. From then on the story goes back and forth from the past to the present, with lots of melodrama in between. A gang rape, suicide, mentally ill parent, this isn't for someone looking for a laugh. I usually prefer books with a little humor and wit, and characters with a little more sarcasm, but this story was worth reading. Although at times I just wished the author would stay in the present instead of dipping back into the past, and some of the melodrama (especially the father) I didn't think was necessary, I enjoyed this book. It's a little on the serious side for chick lit, but a good read none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive!.......2005-02-05

I couldn't get enough of this book. I started it during the big blizzard a couple weeks ago and was glued to it from start to finish. The author doesn't give you a chance to get bored or take a breather -- there's literally so many surprises, so many touching moments, so many thrills...you never know what's hiding around the corner. And for that reason, you find yourself just HAVING to squeeze just one more page of reading in before you walk away. Of course, with me, "one more page" turned into the entire book in one night, but maybe you'll have more discipline! Stella and Emily just have such an amazing friendship and Lindsay Faith Rech is such a talented storyteller. She definitely leaves you missing them at the end. "Joyride" is the perfect title for this book because it describes the reader's experience to a tee. Bravo!

Stories from the ocean-involved from all over as told by Chris Ahrens - a master storyteller. Some of the stories seem to be there to share history, some to share the great story, and most have at least a hint at the humorous side to life. Definately a good book to have around (as long as you don't mind smiling while you read).

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for surfers as well as non surfers........2000-11-14

Chris Ahrens' second collection of surf stories is must reading for those who are a part of the surfing culture and those who find it a fascinating part of the diverse American culture. The stories give you a real sense of both the history and the heart of surfing.

The book is funny, irreverent, and touching. You can have a great afternoon, reading it from cover to cover or you can read a quick story on the "john". Either way, you will find it great reading. The story of the death of Bob Simmons alone is worth the price of the book.

Enjoy!! Also check out Chris' first volume of surf stories "Good Things Love Water"

Book Description

The universe is filled with extreme events: galactic collisions, supernovae eruptions, and stellar implosions. Although not always visible through optical telescopes, these processes generate x-rays, high-energy particles that travel at the speed of light. The Violent Universe reveals how astronomers use color to understand the energy and intensity of these x-rays -- in the process transforming invisible particles into gorgeous images of the cosmos -- and how these scientists discover more about the exotic objects that produce them.

Kimberly Weaver traces the development of x-ray astronomy from the 1950s, when the first artificial satellites began transmitting information from deep space. By juxtaposing a selection of images from optical telescopes with those of cutting-edge x-ray telescopes, she illustrates the way x-ray astronomy captures energy and activity that cannot be seen in visible light.

The book is illustrated with stunning four-color images of galaxies, quasars, pulsars, and black holes captured by Chandra, an enormous x-ray satellite that orbits Earth from a distance 200 times higher than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

The Violent Universe makes plain the amazing new astronomy that has unmasked the thunderous cosmos -- a dynamic science that daily creates breathtaking art.

College-level collections strong in astronomy yet seeking acquisitions general interest readers would also enjoy would do well to consider professor/astronomer Kimberly Weaver's The Violent Universe: Joyrides Through The X-Ray Cosmos. The history and changing technology of x-ray astronomy is revealed, from its beginnings in the 1950s when the first artificial satellites began transmitting to modern-day x-ray telescopes. Beautiful color images of quasars, black holes and more captured by x-ray satellite Chandra are presented along with a fine explanation of the new worlds and environments discovered through x-ray astronomy. With its emphasis on color photos and science mixed with an easy reading style, The Violent Universe is sure to captivate beyond a readership of astronomy students alone. Mammals Of The National Parks: Conserving America's Wildlife And Parklands by John H. Burde & George A. Feldhamer provides a gorgeous survey of American wildlife and parks alike, using the history of each park to provide links to related conservation issues in its establishment, and tips on sighting the animals to be found in the park. John Burde is a forestry professor, Geldhamer is chair of environmental studies and a zoology professor at the same Southern Illinois University Press: their joined expertise lends a fine authority and diversity to a book packed with color photos.

5 out of 5 stars JOYRIDE: A Joy to read.......2003-02-28

Power can be subtle! And this is true for Joyride. This book takes the reader on a journey from racial bias and segregated elitism to open and completely unaffected acceptance.

The story deals with the experience of an upper-class Caucasian youth who -- due to his arrogant prank on the fields of a working farm -- must now work for the farmer and with the migrant Hispanics who are employed there.

Slowly and with great subtlety, the youth's belief structure crumbles. His racial superiority evaporates in the mists of morning as he labors in tandem with his Hispanic co-workers.
Gretchen Olson captures teen spirit most evocatively. The dialogue between Jeff, his new friends, and the farmer's daughter is not only crisp, it is real.

Teens don't wax poetic. They manage to cram deep meaning into short sentences. As we read, we know when they are shy, smile with them as they display their particular brand of wit, and empathize when they are troubled.

And, most importantly, the reader is taught, inescapably, not only the destructiveness of racism, but the beauty of unconditional acceptance.

With acceptance, comes mutual support, productive cooperation and clean friendship. As Jeff evolves from sheltered, suburban brat, he begins to confront not only his own bias, but also his family's. His values change. He becomes strong and, yes, loving. (There's a bit of romance thrown in, just for good measure. And, as with the rest of the book, its power is subtle.)

Those who don't need to learn the message will read this book for pure enjoyment. And all potential ... should read it to learn how much greater they can be than what they think they need to be.

4 out of 5 stars Hooked after 2nd chapter - couldn't put it down.......1998-05-02

Joyride is a fast paced uplifting look into interweaving daily events and interpersonal relationships of family, close friends, acquaintances, sometimes enemies, and working people from different cultures with insight into resolving, and sometimes not resolving, differences in attitudes, ethics, honesty, respect and character. Plenty of action to keep the pages turning. You follow the changing of a young man's values over a short time of summer work and the development of a close boy-girl friendship that will certainly continue on to a serious relationship in years to follow. (Surely there will be a sequel to this great story!) The setting in rural farmland in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with detailed and vivid descriptions of surroundings and working operations, as well as country club and championship tennis events, bring pictures to mind that place the reader right in the story where one belongs. This is a must read for young folks and adults as well.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!! Fast paced, you care about the characters.Loved it.......1998-04-22

Awesome! Realistic characters, informative storyline about strawberry farms, and fast paced plot and problems, all add up for a good summer read. I especially liked how the author was able to pull me into the story as if the characters' problems were my problems too. Joyride was of interest to me because I am familiar with Oregon's Willamette Valley, the setting for the story. Joyride provides adventure, romance, and mystery. I'm 14 years old and I would recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Dark departure for Betty Cavanna.......2006-11-26

Inexplicably, I acquired a bunch of Betty Cavanna books many of which I considered adequate tween fare but I found Joyride to be disturbing and informative. I'm not sure the books were ghost written by different people but Joy Ride is a dark and serious book about a plain jane with the added burden of having had polio. This book is not the typical tween discovers beauty tips and boys. The parents are dysfunctional and the assessment of the main character who will never be one of the beautiful people in magazines is painfully realistic. The time period is also different from her other books in that it is set in the beginning of the Roaring Twenties and not the Happy Daze 1950s.

p.s. I googled and found that Betty Cavanna had had polio as a child.
