Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park

1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!

2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.

3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.

4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.

5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

Book Description

“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan

There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.

Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.

Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend

In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:

• What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him

• Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship

• How to relate to your dog on a canine level

• There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners

• Why every dog needs a job

• How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family

• The difference between discipline and punishment

• And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but NOT a training book.......2007-10-16

If you enjoy watching Cesar Milan's show, you'll enjoy this book. It talks about how he entered the U.S. (illegally, which he admits), and with some luck and a lot of determination, followed his dream to become a dog trainer. Interesting if you enjoy that sort of thing. However, the subtitle of this book is "The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems." But is there anything on housebreaking? No. Preventing chewing on things? No. Preventing your dog from jumping up on people? A little. There is in fact very, very little on addressing everyday problems. There is a LOT on running your large-breed dog until he's exhausted. There is a lot on being the "pack leader" and addressing your dog with "calm-assertive" behavior. That's fine, but there was almost no specific information on exactly HOW to do that.

He discusses being successful in rehabilitating problem dogs, but he never actually describes HOW he did that. He also uses a chapter discussing the case of Diane Whipple, who was killed by two out-of-control large dogs owned by inexperienced and ignorant lawyers who adopted the dogs from a convicted felon. Milan believes he could have rehabilitated one of them, but rightfully points out no one would ever have trusted the dog after it had killed someone. Why he wanted to insert himself into the process is a mystery to me, unless he just wanted bragging rights.

Cesar Milan also advocates running your dog on a tread-mill, which sounds like a recipe for disaster, and apparently was, for at least one dog who was injured at his facility. (This event was not discussed in the book.)

His emphasis on exercise and "calm-assertive" leadership behavior could be helpful for new pet owners who think it's ok to just put the dog out in the backyard for exercise. It's not, and Milan explains why. Owning a dog takes a big commitment of time and energy, and Milan stresses why the exercise component is so necessary.

However, if you want to teach your dog basic house-training or basic obedience or how to be a good canine companion, this book has less for you than you might expect by the sub-title. If you want to learn more about Cesar Milan personally, you may find it interesting. I'd suggest getting it from the library rather than buying it.

If you want a book about understanding your dog's emotions and how they affect training, try reading "For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend" by Patricia McConnell. This is a much better and more practical book geared to reading and understanding the emotions behind your dog's physical behavior and expressions.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2007-10-14

This is old-school "you are the pack leader" rubbish. This is just a guy who somehow got picked up by television and made an icon, for reasons I can't fathom. He's not saying anything new. He's just a common self-promoter. The whole idea of dominance training has been debunked anyway. And as for his idiotic idea that dogs should walk behind their lord and master...not only do I want to know what my dogs are sniffing or looking at, so I can interrupt negative or possibly dangerous behaviors, I want their companionship. I don't want to lead a parade.

By the way, a dog was seriously injured at this fool's "training camp" (he's cashed in big on his moment of fame) because it was left unobserved on a treadmill and fell off of it, while tethered to it. Pretty ugly picture, don't you think? (There was a lawsuit, which I beleive ended in a payoff...uh, settlement.) Breaking down dogs by exhausting them is not training them. I'd give this no stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-10-13

Good book. Provides a good understanding of the dog mindset. Enjoyed it and found it helpful but was more high level than I was hoping for, would have preferred more practical everyday tips for the everyday dog.

5 out of 5 stars Give This One Five Dog Biscuits.......2007-10-12

I'm a dog lover, advocate for animals' rights, and volunteer with a Weimaraner rescue group. And okay, I admit, I tend to attach human qualities to the four dogs we own. All are rescued dogs - two Black Labs, an Australian Blue Heeler, and a Weimaraner. All have their own quirks and behavioral issues. What Cesar Millan states is true: dogs are a pack animal and respond to this milieu. And what I kept forgetting before I read this book was that I'm pack leader, so would find myself following the pack, so to speak. I learned some valuable lessons with this book and it's helped tremendously with our Weimaraner, Emma Blue, and her problem with separation anxiety. Excercise is essential, as are discipline and affection. It amazed me how quickly our dogs responded to this regimen. Thanks, Cesar!

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2007-10-12

I have 2 mutts.
So a few people told me I should read about this guy and I did. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how any dog owner/lover would agree to any of these methods. To me, it's about a power struggle and dominance. Sure, your dog should know you're in charge.. but making them run 6 hours a day is NOT training, it's downright abuse. Our dogs should be obedient because they respect and love us, not fear us. If that's the relationship you want with your pets, fine I guess.

Moreover, the entire book is about how great he thinks he is and the writing's terrible. Don't waste your money. Spend it on treats for your fur-kids.

4 out of 5 stars The Deen Bros cookbook.......2007-08-29

I collect cookbooks and this is a fun one. It also has recipes that are very easy to make.

5 out of 5 stars The Deen Brothers.......2007-08-23

If you love Paula, you gotta love her boys. Great cookbook and links to where you can order some of the foods in it. This is a must have!

3 out of 5 stars Well put together...but..........2007-08-07

This book is very nicely done. Lots of great pictures...you know, Food Network usually puts out a good book! However...the recipes seemed incredibly simplistic and amateur. I like the Deen boys and that is why I bought the book...I didn't take the time to look it over very well and when I actually sat down to read it, I was a bit disappointed in the recipes.

Paula's brother has a cookbook too...what's next...Paula's dogs have a dog food cookbook?!?!

5 out of 5 stars Good for you, You Cutie Pies !! .......2007-08-05

I always admired the boy's mama and have to admit always enjoyed it when they would visit their mama on her show. I was happy to learn that they would have their own traveling food show. I watched every one and must say my favorite was the Coconut strip show. I have to be honest, I purchased this book in hopes of getting that recipe and was a bit disappointed when the recipe wasn't in there. But as I read on, I did find that the book was packed with the boy's (and I'm sure plenty of Paula's) renditions of recipes that they met along their road journey.

5 out of 5 stars The result is a gathering of regional inspirations not to be seen elsewhere.......2007-07-27

If the Deen Brothers name sounds familiar, it's because of their Food Network series 'Road Tested', in which the authors head to different parts of America weekly to check out unique foods made by small-town, family-run businesses. Here is a cookbook gathering the best from their show and experiences, from an Alaskan Salmon Salad with Russian Dressing to Espresso Brownies. The result is a gathering of regional inspirations not to be seen elsewhere, spiced by the author's investigations and stories: perfect for public library lending.

Product Description

This book offers practical suggestions and advice for how to teach and learn those subtle messages that most people seem to pick up almost automatically but that have to be directly taught to individuals with social-cognitive challenges. Given the serious consequences that can befall a person who violates a social rule, the strategies and detailed lists of curriculum items make The Hidden Curriculum a much-needed resource.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good reference but scant on practical strategies.......2007-07-25

I purchased this book a year ago and it sat on my shelf until today. I dusted it off because I am developing a community-based social skills coaching program for an adolescent with high-functioning Autism. I recalled that the book had a nice list of the hidden curriculum for a variety of social situations (e.g. eating at a restauant, telephone skills, rules for dating, reading body language). There were a few in there that I never would have thought of. This was helpful as a jumping off point for making goals and developing a concise script for the sessions.

There is a section in the book on the strategies to teach the hidden curriculum, but it is limited in content. There is a brief description of a technique, examples of worksheets one could use, but there are no blank reproducible materials of the worksheets they used as examples.

I would recommend this book for those just starting out in the field and teachers or parents who want to know what words to use to explain to their child the "unwritten social rules."

By the way, I would also recommend that you "do not talk about how mucus looks or feels in the throat or looks in your tissue." :)

1 out of 5 stars Totally Unhelpful!.......2006-04-02

I bought this book because a reviewer said it would teach people with Asperger's syndrome how to make and manintain eye contact. It doesn't. It just says you should make and maintain eye contact, it doesn't teach you how. This book only tells you what society expects of you, so if you already know what society expects of you, but just cannot figure out how to do it smoothly, don't buy this book. If you already know stuff like, "pull up your pants before coming out of the bathroom", don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Social Skills.......2006-02-19

This book is a must have for anyone whose life is touched by someone with autism. Myles teaches her readers that teaching social skills is not an insurmountable task. It just requires a conscious effort by all.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A simple solution!.......2005-04-24

One of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!

5 out of 5 stars Bridging the Gap & Crossing into Neuro-neutral Grounds.......2004-12-24

This is another book that people on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum have been praying for! This sterling work helps decode and identify tacit Social Codes & Rules. For many people on the a/A spectrum, learning these nonverbal subtleties is a major challenge. a/A related conditions are neurobiological and affect sensory processing and integration as well as communication. People on the a/A spectrum encounter a wide range of social difficulties, many of which are addressed in this book.

This work gives good advice on how to make and maintain eye contact; how to position oneself when talking to and listening to another; how to appear natural in practicing these skills. This book also gives a good explanation of how to "read" people socially and how to learn to anticipate possible seeming changes in the Tacit Social Codes & Rules. People with neurotypical (NT) brains already know these Rules and NT readers also can benefit from this book by seeing what people on the a/A spectrum contend with. Rather, people on the a/A spectrum learn these behaviors cognitively as this is not intuitive knowledge among the a/A population. Once the Rules are learned, the next step is understanding when and how and to apply them.

Make a place for this book. It is every a/A navigator's best friend when it comes to improving social skills and interpreting human behavior. It is a bridge from the a/A population to the NT population and moves all, a/A and NT readers alike onto neuro-neutral ground. The information found in this book makes communicating in the NT world so much easier and so much more logical!

Great ideas for beginning writers in terms of organization. Breaks down the steps simply. Explains what makes interesting writing.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT resource!.......2007-05-09

I have used this book with my own lessons and bought it for all the 2-5 teachers in my building. Very user friendly. Has great ideas for mini-lessons and wonderful resources to copy for students to keep in their wirters' notebooks. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Makes writing seem easy!.......2007-01-16

This book is aimed toward older students, grades 3-8, but I have 2nd graders. Another teacher at my school recommended it, so I gave it a try. While not every lesson is appropriate for my grade level, a lot of it is. I especially like how there is a mini-play (2 or 3 minutes) to go along with the lessons. My students love the section of word choice, where there is a play of Strong Verb vs Weak Verb (like a boxing match). It has reproducible reference sheets for the students to use for transition words, color words, strong verbs, etc. These are great to add to a writing folder. I can't imagine how great this would be for the intermediate grades. Great resource! Especially when you aren't given much of a guideline on how to teach writing!

5 out of 5 stars The Best for teaching writing.......2007-01-14

I work in a sixth grade classroom with second-language learners. This book is the best. I showed it to my fifth grade colleague, and he bought it. What is great about this book is that it has lists of words you can give to the kids such as strong verbs or sight words or transition words. It has wonderful teacher sheets to copy for teaching mini lessons. I used many of her ideas such as show/don't tell, or teaching similes or teaching dialogue. Seriously was not a book that I put on the shelf and rarely looked at. It's hard buying a book and not being able to thumb through it, but I tell you that you won't be disappointed with this one!

2 out of 5 stars Only if you have doubts.......2007-08-01

This book will answer all your questions about training your dog but won't teach you much about how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to clicker training.......2007-02-19

I've known about clicker training for years now, but I always dismissed it as a valid training method. I didn't see how you could reliably train a dog when you were dependent on a clicker and food treats. After reading this book I've had all my questions answered.

Melissa Alexander fully explains all aspects of clicker training, as well as some of the concepts of operant conditioning. The book is laid out in a Q & A format and each question has a sidebar with related questions to refer to. I found this feature incredibly useful as the questions in the sidebar were nearly always questions that had already popped into my head. She also offers quotes and success stories that are both encouraging and humorous (like the dog who unintentionally learned to put her head in a box instead of her toy). The sections covering reinforcement and punishment was very clear and really helped me to understand why this training method works so well.

While I wouldn't recommend this book as a stand-alone clicker manual (it's mainly about theory; not much on training specific behaviors), it's an excellent book for what it is. Definitely something you should add to your bookshelf if you're new to clicker training.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-01-17

I had read a number of books on Clicker Training, all of which were helpful to varying degrees, before I read Melissa Alexander's Click for Joy! As I read Click for Joy!, I realized this would have been the very best book to read first, as it covered all my questions so completely. Of course, it was a great book to read after having read all the other books I've read for the same reason. The way the author has organized the material is very helpful for all kinds of mind sets. Someone who wants to read the book through from A to Z gets great foundation before going onto more techical information, but if you are like me, when I read about something, I tend to have all kinds of questions that I'd like to address right now. Ms. Alexander has organized each page with cross references to more information on particular subjects on that page. The language is easy to understand, as though you are having a personal visit with Melissa. She also has a chapter explaining in detail how to train a number of basic behaviors to perfection... very detailed explanations. After going through these basic behaviors, she explains how to organize your own plan for trainng other behaviors. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Clicker Training.

I have found Peggy Tilman's book, Clicking with Your Dog, Step-by-Step in Pictures, to be a great companion book to Click for Joy! because it goes into picture detail for many more behaviors beyond the basic behaviors in Melissa Alexander's book. IF a person is limited in book funds and wants to understand clicker training, these are the two books I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Goof Proof Your Clicking.......2006-08-16

What a great way to see what potential you have for correcting a mistake before you do it. I am training two pups at once. Sure enough, as soon as one of them gets it, the other does too. So, if I make a mistake they will both learn it. This book handles the individuality of each dog and lets you see ways to better your abilities by zeroing in on potential problems before they occur. I am using it with the excellent Clicking with your Dog book and think the set makes a perfect combination for the joy of clickertraining. Also, little hints like what kind of treats to use, alternates to food, etc. make this full of useful surprises. Also, the advice on how to make the behavior "perfect" lets you know how far to push each activity before moving on to the next. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent training book!.......2006-08-10

This book is excellent in every way. Melissa Alexander writes in a style that is both substantial and understandable and this is one of the most user-friendly books I have ever read.

I am definitely a better clicker trainer as a result of having read this book. From now on when I recommend a book to get started with clicker training, it will be this one.

5 out of 5 stars A definite must!.......2007-10-16

I've been looking at this book for ages and when I finally got the chance to meet the author in person and have her sign a copy I couldn't resist any longer. Ms. Leapmen makes the whole cable process easy, from chart reading to making the garment. As for those disappointed with not having reversible cables or a cardigan, stop and think about the fact that this book is rather large does contain tons of information. You can only put so much in at one time. Thanks Ms. Leapemn for a wonderful addition to my library!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, beautiful projects, Beautiful book!.......2007-09-26

I love this book. I didn't purchase it on Amazon, however, I plan on purchasing more Melissa Leapman book immediately! I made the pink scarf/hat set as my first project, continued with the easy cable sweater. I also made the afghan with squares (still working on it, I made squares in between projects), the Harvest Tweed Afghan, and the multi-colored pillow. Everything has turned out beautifully. However, one complaint - unless I am reading something wrong, the reversible cable scarf pattern is incorrect. I figured it out and mine looks exactly like the book, but just a warning!

I love this book!!!

4 out of 5 stars lovely projects, a bit simple.......2007-06-28

This is a book that I'd seen and wanted, but as usual hated paying full price for. When it went on sale on here, I snapped it up. The pictures are pretty, the projects are a bit simple for my tastes but I've already made a full size sweater coat that was the most intricate cabled picture I've seen yet. This is great for beginners or more advanced knitters that just want to relax a bit and still have a nice finished project.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully done - great resource.......2007-06-18

Lovely book. Well presented collection of the variety of cable patterns and techniques with good explanations. A little piece on the history of Aran knitting and perhaps on the supposed meaning of some of the cables might have added to the charm of the book. But for a terrific history and explanation of the technique see Starmore's classic work 'Aran Knitting".
The patterns in the book are refreshingly contemporary without being boring or just too funky. There is a timeless style to the patterns unlike many of the knitting books out today whose patterns will be outmoded in no time at all. The explanations and charts are clear and easy to follow.

4 out of 5 stars Definately an Knitting Library Essential!.......2007-04-30

I'm still a relatively new knitter, but I've been eyeing this book for months. I finally received it as a gift and I could not be more thrilled. It is a pattern book and a stitch dictionary all in one!! I think any knitter who enjoys cables should own this book.

The only dissappointment was there was not a pattern for a cardigan. Small price to pay for such a great book though.

Book Description

There Is No Me Without You is the story of Haregewoin Tefarra, a middle-aged Ethiopian woman of modest means whose home has become a refuge for hundreds of children orphaned by AIDS. It is a story as much about the power of the bond between children and parents as about the epidemic that every year leaves millions of children, mostly healthy themselves, without family. Originally a middle-class woman with a happy family life, Haregewoin fell into a deep depression after the death of her recently married daughter. But then a priest brought her two children, AIDS orphans, with nowhere to go. Unexpectedly, the children thrived, and Haregewoin found herself drawn back into daily life. As word got out, an endless stream of children began to arrive at her door, delivered by dying parents and other relatives who begged for her help, and, pushing against the limits of her home and bank account, she took more and more in. Today, Haregewoin runs a school, a daycare system, and a shelter for sick mothers. Without medication for her charges—some HIV-positive, some uninfected, and some infants trying to fight off the virus, but almost all of whom come to her terrified and malnourished—she forges on, caring for as many as she can handle. Increasingly, she also places them for adoption with families like that of journalist Melissa Fay Greene, who has two children adopted from Ethiopia. In Haregewoin Tefarra’s story, Greene gives us an astonishing portrait of a woman fighting a continent-wide epidemic.

5 out of 5 stars Opening our eyes to global needs.......2007-06-30

Melissa Fay Greene has the gift of story telling. The book beckons the reader to think beyond themselves and consider what contribution they may make to the cause of the orphan/Aids in Africa. Thank you Ms. Greene for inviting us on the journey...for educating us on real life on the other side of the globe...for jolting us out of our comfort and compelling us to action. One would need to have a heart of stone not to be moved by this powerful story!

5 out of 5 stars awesome, informative book.......2007-06-09

I am so thrilled that I spent time reading this book. I loved it. This is a well written, informative book. I enjoyed the writing style as it moved through factual historical perspectives to the story of one women making a difference. Take time to read...you will be happy you did!

5 out of 5 stars Moving, informative, gripping picture of humanity in Ethiopia.......2007-05-29

This is the best book I have read in some time. It is meticulously researched, insightful, and explains difficult technical issues clearly. It is gripping in its description of the plight of AIDS orphans and the incredible poverty of Ethiopia. But it is particularly special in the even-handed description of Haregewoin, not as a saint, thought she has given of herself like one, but as a flawed human (as we are all flawed) who has accomplished incredible good at a time when doing so put herself in great jeopardy in her society. This book is a great accomplishment by an accomplished author. I hope she receives the National Book Award for this one!

5 out of 5 stars inspiring book.......2007-05-27

I loved this book! If you want to learn about Ethiopia, the AIDS crisis there, or if you want to be inspired by a true hero, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for the globally minded!.......2007-05-25

Sometimes it is difficult to break out our own local environment to learn more about important events are taking place around the world. Melissa Fay Greene's book, "There Is No Me Without You," allows even the most superficial of us to learn about the AIDS crisis in Africa and begin taking steps to help support a solution to the social problems plaguing that continent. I was familiar with the AIDS crisis in Africa but was horrified to learn about the lack of available pharmaceuticals for treatment of HIV-positive adults and children. It was truly an eye-opener to hear about the gross (for lack of a better word) profits made by drug companies producing these medicines and then the reluctance of those same companies to allow these treatments to be shared with the sick and dying.I was appalled.

I would highly recommend this book. After finishing "There Is No Me Without You," I researched the websites in the back of the book and found it was possible to directly donate to AHOPE. Interested individuals can even sponsor an orphan for as little as $30 a month. I easily spend more than that on books every month.

I was inspired, enlightened, motivated and educated by this book. Thank you Melissa for writing about these wonderful people and sharing their stories with us.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the complete package.......2007-10-14

This book appealed to me on so many levels. The conceit - a conversation between Robin (more my speed, and mother of twins) and Melissa (the more disciplined one) - elevates what could have been a lecture or a screed into an engaging back and forth on individual choices and preferences. The format and the layout make it easy to breeze through in hours - the "takeaway" section at the end of each chapter reinforces the key points. What I appreciate most, though, are the tips and techniques that make veggies more appealing. I know I'm supposed to eat more - I just can't stand the taste of crudites without dip, and I don't always have the time to puree them into my sauces. Melissa's foodie techniques like drizzling olive oil and sea salt over even orange slices work better. Their idea of building a meal around what you're really craving, or eating each item on the plate in direct proportion to how much you really want them make eating a delectable opportunity for decision-making. The Skinny also incorporates ideas from other recent bestsellers - the idea of the balance beam recalls French Women Don't Get Fat. I also like how realistic they are: they identify three types of overeating, and merely say try not to get to the most serious stage more than twice a year. There's no guilt - only the grown up acceptance that sometimes we mess up, and so we try again the next meal.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and a joy to read!.......2007-09-28

The author does not try to teach you their diet plan. Rather, it gives you tips to tweak your own lifestyle. Good insight to work with your habits and not go cold turkey on your favourite foods. Thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring~~.......2007-09-10

I read this book from cover to cover in just a couple hours. It is by far the best diet book I have ever read! (and believe me, I have read many!!) The advice is practical and inspiring. The book is fun and easy to read. Can't wait to read it again!

5 out of 5 stars A real woman's guide to dieting.......2007-08-15

Living in New York City with yummy restaurants, coffee houses and bakeries on every corner, it's hard to resist the temptation of a chocolate croissant or triple latte with extra foam. That's why I'm so glad my friend recommended The Skinny-- the tips in each chapter have helped me get through everything from my cappuccino choices to packing healthy lunches for the office and even the occasional cocktail party! I can tell the authors have been there and they get it! This is definitely a diet book for the real world. The food is fun, recipes--like the Whole Wheat Cherry Scones and London Broil with Caramelized Pineapple--are delicious, and the guidelines are easy to stick to. "Eat what you want. Don't eat what you don't want." If this city girl can fit into her little black dress, so can you!

5 out of 5 stars Great book even if you're already skinny.......2007-08-13

I was somewhat offended when I received The Skinny from my boyfriend as a birthday present. (He insisted that I didn't need it, but I couldn't help being a little angry.) He thought the recipes looked good and told me I should give it a chance. I went ahead and read it through, and I've since come to love it!

The Skinny is witty, smart, and concise - a true pleasure to read. The recipes are fabulous and fresh, bursting with flavor while being almost deceptively healthy. Each one strikes just the right balance between being nutritious and indulgent, which is essentially what the book is all about. I do have a big sweet tooth, and even though the book (rightfully) doesn't pay much attention the sweets, the recipes the authors do have are very satisfying (I am particularly a fan of the ginger-stewed rhubarb.) (I also love, love, love the Moroccan carrot salad and the broccoli and tofu salad with garlic and cumin - both are quick and interesting weeknight dinners.)

Even though losing weight is really not my priority, many of the recipes in The Skinny have become part of my permanent repertoire - I love eating them and feel better after doing so. My diet has also become more varied, and I eat way more vegetables and whole grains than I used to. What's there to lose?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Choices for the Actor.......2007-10-18

I used this book to teach a beginning acting class at our community college. It is an excellent introduction to the craft. The book gives clear examples of selecting an action that create clear and exciting choices for the actor. Rather than focusing on emotional states such as "you're angry or you're happy," the text shows how to allow emotional truth to come from the moment while focusing on what the character is doing. The examples in the book are practical and relate well to the craft. I particularly appreciated that an action should have a test in the other character. So rather that an character delivering a letter with an action "to deliver" that is over without fanfare, a more exciting action would be "to please my boss so I'll get a promotion." The character still delivers a letter, but with a more dynamic action that is interesting to watch. The book is short. I covered the material in our film acting and stage acting units in about eight classes. It's short, sweet & to the point. I recommend it as a great review for experienced actors and as a wonderful introduction to beginning actors. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2007-06-13

This is a very useful guide to teaching theatre. I will be using it a lot in my classroom.

5 out of 5 stars bravo!.......2007-04-03

I studied for a couple of years at the Atlantic Theatre in NYC which David Mamet and William H Macy founded...they teach exclusively the principles in this book..the title says it all.."Practical"..as far as analyzing a script, breaking it down and coming up with acting impetus this book will free you from all that crap you've been taught and give you basic, workable tools to act..especially in auditions where you might be given a script and then 5 minutes later be asked to do it..once I got a grasp of the practical techniques I found my audition success rate soar..I still incorporate these techniques in every audition...the method and all that other acting stuff you'll learn like smelling the coffe and being a leave floating off a tree, well, that's nice but an actors basic tools never change, knowing your lines and analyzing the script, knowing what's going on in the scene and what you want in the scene..this book give you the tools to do just that...highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Even if you're not an actor.......2007-02-07

I'm a theatre major, but I'm not an actor. I've never been, actually. But one of the requirements is to take an acting course, which put me in a pinch.

We study this book in class, and this book is great, even for people who know nothing about acting. It really does do a good job for making it easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, DO-ABLE instruction.......2005-04-15

Ok. When you're studying an art, like acting, it is sometimes frustrating to hear people talk about "craft" and "technique" without getting really specific about what you must actually DO to achieve such things and develop as an artist. People often talk about art as if it is some vague, nebulous, magical thing. And, I guess, it benefits them to talk about it that way. Because then, everyone respects them immensely for being able to do such a thing, and (like a magician) they don't reveal any of their secrets.

This book pulls the veil away. While I don't necessarily advocate relying ONLY on this resource (instinct, other techniques, etc., should all be in an actor's bag of tricks), this book provides clear, actionable directions on how to achieve more specificity in your choices as an actor, how to make your characters more focused, and how to deliver more compelling performances. Based on Stanislavsky's method, the book advises embodying each line with action (and tells you how), LISTENING to your stage-mates, and thinking about the physicality of a role (and tells you how).

What I like best about this book is that it breaks something complicated, like rendering a complex character, down into manageable things you can do to get yourself there as a performer. Bravo!
