Science of positive reinforcement.......2007-08-01
Aubrey Daniels offers an insightful look at the behavioral school of management, and its key tools: positive, and negative reinforcement. The book covers how to link rewards to behaviors you want to reinforce, when to deliver them, and how to design systems to support them. While not without its flaws, the book is well written and offers plenty of practical advice - if you're an aspiring manager, or a seasoned veteran, 'Bringing Out the Best in People' is a solid investment of your time.
Clarity, results, contribution.......2007-07-04
This is an essential text for anyone who manages people. Daniels is clearly 'for' creating a workplace that taps the innate desire to contribute and against one run by fear. I've seen nearly 35 years of organizational life, as employee, manager and consultant. That's a lot of fads, slogans and philosophies. This book is the real deal.
When people are managed using these clear, rigorous, objective principles, stress and interpersonal barriers decrease, work exceeds expectations. I also recommend Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's "Nonviolent Communication".
Based on a flawed worldview.......2007-04-02
I started reading the book as a part of my personal development with the company that I work for. The book is founded in behaviorism, and does not stray from the concepts associated with this worldview. My issue with it is that I believe that people are more than a reaction to the things that happen to us. We have unique personalities, and they consist of more than the conditioning that they are subjected to. This psychology takes away the idea of free-will and choice, and eliminates personal responsibility. When it comes to managing people, I believe that these are important elements to tap into. This behaviorist approach to management may look good on the surface, and make logical sense, but is flawed by its nature, and cannot have any long lasting impact.
Good book but not as good as her other book.......2006-03-02
This book is a fine book if you are looking for the typical book written for lazy minds. The material is good, the presentation is great. However, there is a lack of references and detail that someone really interested in the material will desire. If you like pop-culture books get this one. If you want a terrific book that appeals to your brain then get the authors other book, "Performance Management." It is exceptional.
Must Have Book for all Managers, Parents & Pet Owners.......2006-01-14
I have used Bringing Out the Best in People throughout Latin America and here in the States for several years. When I have control of a client project, this book is required reading. I get groans at first from supervisors and managers, but it is amazing what happens after they read it. They come back and immediately start talking about NICs, PICs, etc. It is fun but keeps me on my toes from that point forward as they watch my every move!
Although Daniels talks of motivating and brining out top performance from individuals within organizations, the concepts definitely applies and should be used in personal/family relationships as well. The concepts even hold true as I train my dog and two macaws as uncertain/certain, future consequences do not work for them! The beauty is that this book makes you stop and think.

Brilliantly simple- a MUST read.......2007-10-17
I have been in the industry a few years, and definitely have been successful as a recruiter- but not as a business builder. I had an epiphany reading this book, and have been preaching the word on this book ever since I read it. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who wants success in Network Marketing. I have insisted that anyone I sponsor now read it.
It also works as a book for prospects!

Solid book on Java Enterprise architecture.......2007-09-03
It is a MUST-HAVE J2EE architect/developer book. It provides the most important and relevant patterns in J2EE design and development based on Gang of Four. The architecture guidance and best practices described are very valuable.
This book needs an update for Java EE 5. Not sure, those updates are posted on their web site.
A must have for J2EE architects.......2007-01-04
I bought this book for preparing for SUn Certfied Enterprise Architect assignment( part II). I am very happy with this book. It gives examples for all J2EE patterns in a very lucid way and this book has helped me a lot.
This is the most important and comprehensive J2EE design pattern book.......2007-01-03
Do you know GoF ? Do you know basic 14 design patterns ? Do you know Java ? Do you know J2EE ? Do you know EJB ? Are you an architect of Java based applications ? OK. But if you do not know the book Core J2EE Patterns you are not taking designing and implementation of J2EE applications seriously. The book describes all the details, consequences and other aspects of J2EE design patterns. I recommend to read book sequentially and to make a lot of bookmarks and lot of skips into related links in the book.
You get clear picture of overall architecture possibilities in J2EE world. Also thanks to this book I became a certified architect.
It is outdated........2006-12-21
This was the bible I used for a project, I loved the ideas and I named the classes after the names in this book.
However, 3 years later, after reviewing this book, I would say, many ideas in the book are already outdated and over emphasized in the past. Just remember the good old days when EJB was glorious and almost every company went for it.
After the EJB rush, now when we are back to basic, we realized that many Plain Old Design Patterns are real gold. I would suggest you don't rely heavily on J2EE, focus on domain design instead.
Many books provide this advice on domain driven development, such as Design Patterns, Refactoring, Domain Driven Design.
After you read those books, then read this book again. You will agree with this review.

An essential guide for the professional and experienced J2EE developer.......2006-12-02
This book is about using patterns for the J2EE platform, using best practices to design applications that use JSP, Servlet, EJB components, and JMS technologies, preventing reinvention of the wheel when it comes to design and the J2EE platform, and finally identifying bad practices in existing designs and refactoring those designs. This book assumes the reader already knows how to program with J2EE technologies and is familiar with UML. Each pattern presented has a problem it addresses, forces involved (what you want to accomplish), and a solution. Also included are related patterns and even some sample code, though the code is by no means complete.
This book is organized into two parts. Part 1, "Patterns and J2EE" covers an introduction to J2EE and patterns. It deals with design considerations for JSP, servlets, and enterprise beans. This part also includes bad practices and refactorings for the J2EE platform.
Chapter 1: "Introduction" is a brief discussion on various topics, including patterns, J2EE platform, defining a pattern, and pattern categorization. It ends by introducing the J2EE Pattern Catalog.
Chapter 2: "Presentation Tier Design Considerations and Bad Practices" and Chapter 3 "Business Tier Design Considerations and Bad Practices" discuss the design considerations and bad practices for the presentation tier and business/integration tiers respectively. The design considerations are issues that a J2EE developer needs to consider while working with the J2EE platform. The topics presented in these chapters point the reader to other sources (such as official specifications and well written books on these topics) for more detailed information on these issues.
Chapter 4: "J2EE Refactorings" includes some of the refactorings the authors have experienced in their work that has enabled them to move designs from a less than optimal solution to a better solution. The refactorings provide another way to think about the material in the rest of the book, providing what the authors believe to be valuable companion material to the pattern catalog. This chapter shows how the authors have been influenced by Martin Fowler and his book "Refactoring". For those readers who are familiar with the Refactoring book, the format of this chapter will be very familiar. However, the content of this chapter is entirely in the context of J2EE technologies, whereas Martin Fowler addresses refactoring at a different level.
Part 2, "J2EE Pattern Catalog" presents the J2EE pattern catalog which contains the patterns that form the core of this book.
Chapter 5, "J2EE Patterns Overview" provides an overview of the J2EE pattern catalog. This chapter begins with a high level discussion of the pattern ideas and explains the way the patterns are categorized into tiers. It also explains the J2EE pattern template, which is used to present all patterns in this book. The chapter discusses all the J2EE patterns and uses a diagram to show their inter-relationships. It also provides a roadmap to the pattern catalog. This roadmap presents common J2EE design and architecture-related questions with references to patterns or refactorings that provide solutions to these questions. Understanding the pattern relationships and the roadmap is key to using these patterns.
Chapter 6, "Presentation Tier Patterns" presents eight patterns that pertain to using servlets, JSP, JavaBeans, and custom tags to design web-based applications for the J2EE platform. The patterns describe numerous implementation strategies, and address common problems such as request handling, application partitioning, and generating composite displays.
Chapter 7, "Business Tier Patterns" presents nine patterns that pertain to using EJB technology to design business components for the J2EE platform. The patterns in this chapter provide the best practices for using the EJB and JMS technologies. Where relevant, these patterns include discussion on other technologies, such as JNDI and JDBC.
Chapter 8, "Integration Tier Patterns" presents four patterns that pertain to integrating J2EE applications with the resource tier and external systems. The patterns deal with using JDBC and JMS to enable integration between business tier and resource tier components.
Finally, the "Web Worker Micro-Architecture" discusses an advanced topic of using multiple patterns to solve a larger problem. It specifically discusses the Web Worker micro-architecture which illustrates how to combine multiple patterns to integrate a J2EE application and a workflow system.
I found this book very enlightening, although I would not say it is an easy read, since this is not an easy subject. Some things have changed since it was published back in 2003, primarily the advent of EJB 3.0 which changes the need for and structure of a few patterns. However, it is still a very good book on design and I would still highly recommend it for the experienced J2EE developer. The book's preface recommends it for managers too, but quite frankly unless the manager is well-versed in J2EE to begin with, I think it would just confuse him/her since the discussions and explanations can get quite technical.

Business Continuity: Best Practices
by Andrew Hiles
The Business Continuity: Best Practices book addresses all the professional areas of competencies recommended by the Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII) and the Business Continuity Institute (BCI). The DRII and BCI are the largest professional groups establishing industry standards and membership educational requirements on a worldwide basis in the continuity and disaster recovery field.
Business Continuity: Best Practices is designed for use by professionals as well as by interested non-professionals. In fact the book directs the user at a `Practitioner Level' and at a `Foundation Level'. Most business continuity concepts are more practical than technical and the conscientious nonprofessional can utilize this book. The book makes very liberal use of Appendices in every section, thus allowing the serious user to selectively examine specific topics in detail. The casual reader can skip any technical Appendix without losing important concepts.
For the serious reader / plan developer there are numerous tables and checklists that are useful in gathering information and developing the actual Business Continuity Plan. The checklists and tables are very detailed allowing the user to develop a comprehensive plan that does not miss any major points. The book is easy to read and even a non-professional can develop a good plan, especially if a good planning template or actual Business Continuity Plan from a similar business is available as a guide.
In addition to developing a Business Continuity Plan document, Business Continuity: Best Practices addresses ongoing communication, plan implementation, plan activation and all the important aspects of plan development and execution. There is also an excellent section on emergency response and plan operations that provides important guidance during an actual emergency situation. Most importantly, Business Continuity: Best Practices addresses ongoing maintenance and exercise issues so the plan can be properly maintained.
Business Continuity: Best Practices deserves a solid 5-star rating.

Basic.......2005-05-12
The information in the book are basic, not deeply developed. Maybe it is good for beginners, not for experienced personnel.
Authoritative and Comprehensive.......2004-11-20
This book certainly helped me to find my way through the complex world of BC. It is easy to follow, with a roadmap to guide you through and summaries after each chapter. It covers the DRII / BCI Common Body of Knowledge step by step, with many examples from real life cases, checklists, forms - everything I needed to get through a first assignment. And it will become provide a useful benchmark for us as we become more mature and widen the scope of our BC and risk managementactivities.

In the early 1990s, when Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., a nationally recognized award-winning nutrition expert and the nutrition correspondent for Good Morning America, wrote the first edition of her groundbreaking book, Food & Mood, scientists were just beginning to understand how what we eat affects how we feel. Over the past several years, nutrition research has exploded, and this edition of Food & Mood has been completely revised and updated to reflect the latest findings on the relationship between diet and mental and emotional well-being.
Food & Mood covers all the bases for eating right for a healthy body and mind and includes practical, nutritionally sound advice for putting Somer's Feel Good Diet into practice. Somer starts out by simply and eloquently elucidating the science behind the food-mood link. She explains how food affects mood; the basis of food cravings; how diet is connected to stress, PMS, and fatigue; and what foods banish the blues, boost brain power, and improve sleep naturally. Need to stop overeating and abusing food? In the second section, Somer gives compassionate, pragmatic advice for turning your eating habits around for good. The final section gives detailed, step-by-step suggestions and guidelines to help you eat right to feel great. Included are shopping tips, daily menus, information on designing a supplement program, and tantalizing recipes. (Who knew burritos, brownies, and chocolate chip cupcakes could be good for you?) --Ellen Albertson

Food and Mood.......2007-09-20
This is a very easy to read book. I was happy to see menu plans and receipes included.
Great book.......2007-06-09
This is a fantastic book and highly recommended. Somer does an excellent job in breaking down the science on eating and succintly conveys these points to the reader. Not only will your body feel the benefits of Somer's advice, but you will also learn a lot about how the scientific relationship between food and mood.
I felt that the best thing about this book is that Somer does not say that you must eat any specific diet. Rather than advocating for a strict and boring diet, the author recommends eating habits that mean that eating can still be a great experience.
BUY THIS BOOK if you never buy anything else..........2005-09-29
It's so refreshing to read a book that doesn't preach "diet". It's a vicious cycle. What we eat affects our mood and our mood affects what we want to eat!!
The book (at the beginning) goes into some detail about the chemistry of the body and brain and the purpose is to show you HOW your body uses the fuel it gets. It is an easy read and very easy to incorporate the changes into your life.
The book has really been my "Bible" and I have told hundreds of people about it. It's about eating the right foods for your body and your mind, it's NOT a diet, it's a lifestyle change. The reason so many women can't lose weight and keep it off is that they are focused so much on "diet" and losing weight. It's really about being healthy overall. And what we eat directly affects our moods and THAT is a mental thing, which eventually turns physical if our moods are depressed and we continue to eat things that hurt us.
Another great thing about it is that it covers all the different types of moods and changes women go through and how what they eat either makes the mood better or worse. It also has lists of foods in the back that are good for your lifestyle. I never realized there were SO MANY fruits and veggies and other foods out there that are good for you, that I could eat. And knowing which foods to stay away from or eat during certain moods is so helpful.
For instance, late in the day when you are at work and feeling tired, eat a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread. It does NOT put you to sleep, it's in small amounts, it actually does the reverse and perks you up. Try it!!
At least go to the library and check the book out first, I guarantee you will love it and want to buy it so you can use it for reference. I am so glad I found it, this book has changed my life!!!
Decent Nutrition Overview.......2004-12-08
This book is an overview of nutritional and dietary practices, and how they can affect your health, particularly your mental well-being. It is organized into two main sections: The Food-Mood Link, and Nutrition Know-How. In the first section, there are separate chapters about such topics as blood chemistry, carbohydrates, fats and chocolate, and dietary affects on energy levels, PMS and SAD, depression, stress, thinking and memory, as well as chapters on food allergies and intolerances, and eating disorders. The second section presents advice on healthy eating habits for positive mental well-being, with chapters on shopping and supplements. At the end of the book are a glossary, a short section of recipes, a list of organizations devoted to specific diet and health concerns, references organized by chapter, and an index.
Reading this book is a bit like consulting with a nutritionist. Near the beginning of most chapters is a short self-scoring quiz about your current dietary habits or mental condition. After taking the quiz, you add up the points to see if you are eating well in this particular area, or should consider adjusting your habits. The remaining text in the chapter explains some of the problems or symptoms of the topic under discussion and various dietary factors that may play a role, or how dietary changes can help ameliorate symptoms. The suggestions Somer makes are all grounded on published scientific research, as cited in the references found at the back of the book.
While I found the nutritional information worthwhile, I found the quizzes a bit simplistic at times. Quiz 1.1 "What do you eat and how do you feel?" was particularly questionable in format. It asks you to rate your mood on a scale of 0-5 for about 25 characteristics such as "calm" or "lethargic" before lunch and then again after lunch. If any of these values change during this time, you are presumably to blame it on what you had for lunch. Such a format constitutes a classic example of how to create unfounded cause-effect relationships. Mood changes could just as easily come from hormone cycling, food you ate at an earlier meal, or something you heard on the news during lunch. On the other hand, the quizzes provide a limited means of interactivity, to make up for Somer not being able to conduct a personal interview about specific needs before giving dietary advice. Overall, I found the book informative and interesting, though the quizzes need some more polish.
Might be the best Diet Book out there.......2004-05-23
I bought this book before I bought the South Beach diet book.
At the time, I did not comprehend what White bread and insulin levels were doing to my body. After I went on the South beach diet, I went back to reread some of Food and mood. I realised that what had been written in SBD, had been covered in much more depth in Food and Mood.
There is so much information in this book. Each food does something to your body. Too much sugar, and 20 minutes later you are tired and cranky. Same could be said for white bread, white rice, white pasta.
The bibliography at the end is priceless. For once, the author of a diet book has backed up her claims with countless studies from reputable sources.
In conclusion, get this book.

Great Strategies.......2007-03-29
Excellent book for strategies in tax-free investing to achieving my personal goal of living in my dream house. I bought this book with "Buying A Second Home: Income, Gateway or Investment" to better understand the tax benefits of second-home ownership.
How a Second Home Can Be Your Best Investment........2007-01-31
Great book! We own second home so I think it will be very helpful with Taxes.
Excellent Information.......2006-03-16
This book provides some excellent information regarding the topic. A must read for those who are considering investment in a second home.
Dangerous Cheerleaders.......2005-12-14
Some people need encouragement. Regarding our dreams for a 2nd home, most of us are probably stuck in ruts, not knowing how to get out. This book does a good job of helping readers envision the possibilities. Too good a job. They do not present a systematic process for realistically considering what a prospective 2nd home buyer can afford, whether this is even a good idea, the downs of investing (how will you feel after 6 months of no rent in your investment property while still paying the mortgage?) They don't have the reader ask enough tough questions before cheering them on to take this bold and potentially devestating step. Think the dot bomb was rough? How about staring a $2000/month mortgage in the face with no hope of liquidating that property that's worth 10% less than you paid for it! I recommend Investing in a Vacation Home for Pleasure and Profit by James H. Boykin instead.
Good Read, but Leaves me wanting.......2005-04-04
I like this book, but it left me wanting more. The book does a nice job framing a second home as an investment, but the tax advantages are quickly addressed in chapter two w/o a lot of detail. After one read, I get the general idea, but not all of the implications. Also, the trade-offs of depreciation are only touched on vaguely.
However, the book is very readable and uses great antidotal examples (which I found helped me understand the material better). Also, there are lots of references for additional research. This i probably a good introduction into the subject and did leave me with enough information to decide to pursue this idea of a second home a little farther.
Book Description
Good management of inventory enables companies to improve their customer service, cash flow and profitability. 'Best Practice in Inventory Management' outlines the basic techniques, how and where to apply them, and provides advice to ensure they work to produce the desired effect in practice.
The book shows how inventory management techniques can be used in a wide variety of situations, particularly in stores where the inventory can be anything from fast moving products to slow moving spares. The discussion extends across distribution warehousing and manufacturers' operations.
The text is based on best theory and practice, which has been gradually developed by the inventory management profession over the years. It covers the inventory control aspects included in the courses for the DPIM, COM, DLM, CPIM and other professional and academic qualifications.
Readers develop their understanding of stock control by seeing the techniques explained logically and learn how inventory structuring, individual item control, forecasting and co-ordination provide the base for logistics management. This new edition has been up-dated throughout and the final chapter, The Future - Inventory and Logistics, has been re-written to reflect the developing applications of technology and changes in focus.

Inventory management.......2007-07-27
The concepts are presented pretty clearly, however the author is a Brit and the terminology used throughout is a bit foreign to me. But theres a lot of information here for someone who wants to get an overview of what inventory management entails.
Theory is not best practice.......2005-08-09
I bought this book expecting to find examples of new ideas developed recently by businesses that are considered at the top level related to assets management.
What I found was an excellent summary of all the textbooks used in college for the last 40 years. I could even find a chart we used in class in 1972.
Best Practices in Inventory management must include links to Manufacturing strategies, postponement of production to delay costs, improve flexibility for lower number of SKU's.
I find the title pretty ambitious but not enough "meat".
Stock problems? Look no further...........2002-07-05
If you work in stock control, sales, purchasing, or production planning and really do not have a clue where to start in order to maximise the profitability of your inventory (both raw materials and finished goods), then there is no better place to start than with this book. It gives much practical advice that is easy to implement in real business life and emphasises the genuine cost savings and improved cashflow that can be gained.
What I like most about the boook is its structure - it starts with the basics (why inventory control is important financially), and takes you through basic forecasting methods to more advanced levels (e.g. double exponential smoothing). You can implement most of the advice in Excel or similar spreadsheet. I am no mathematician and I must admit I found some of the formulas difficult to understand at first, but please do not be put off - perserverence will pay dividends and you will see this perseverence hit the bottom line!

Pragmatic view to inventory management
This book is useful........2000-06-13
This book is useful. It is expected, however, to be revised in some points. There are some miss specifications in terminologies and in some chapters, explanations are not good enough to understand the equations or methods the auther used.
Book Description
Mr. Goodwrench meets the Marx Brothers in this laugh-out-loud collection of wisecracks, automotive first aid, and roadside philosophy. Tom and Ray have gathered the most outrageous and humorous segments from their weekly call-in radio show, including "Eggs Prestone," "Bad Hair Days," "Clinton Sends Vowels to Bosnia," "Gail, the Tollgate Fugitive," and the Tappet Brothers personal favorite, the tale of Max and his little Schnauzer.

What I like best about Tom and Ray.......2007-07-12
Face it, for most of us, our cars are our lives. The US post WWII is not as a rule built for pedestrians and if your car breaks down, you lose a lot of control over your world.
Tom and Ray take a situation that's very stressful for most people and turn it into something that even the most stressed out person can laugh about. Truth is--someday you are going to look back on most of the hard situations in your life and laugh. You might as well start while they're happening. Knowing that you could be next, you're laughing with the poor schmuck who's called Click and Clack for some automotive advice.
Plus, they do get some of the worst--and weirdest--cases around. My husband and I try to listen to "Car Talk" every Saturday morning and often will be commenting on the episodes through the next week. The "Car Talk" CDs are a great way to keep laughing when you need a break from a hard week.
Really the Best and Second Best of Car Talk.......2007-03-09
This was the best Car Talk cd I've ever heard! There are some real gems here!
I can't expect any better.......2007-01-09
Those Tappett Bros. really are something, this truly is their best album if they say so or not. Obviously the best place to waste your time listening to this CD is in your car, especially on long trips. just enjoy them the best you can.
cars and stuff.......2007-01-01
It would be a mistake to evaluate this double-CD as a stand-alone product.
Instead, it is the byproduct of an authentic American phenomenon. I've been fortunate to live all over. Believe me: Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers on National Public Radio could only happen here.
I find these guys hilarious. Not everyone will. To make a long story short, these Boston greasepit goons (one of them has a PhD from MIT) started a call-in radio show years ago in New England called 'Car Talk'. The audience would call in to ask questions about their cars, which these two brothers would answer after a bit of Socratic questioning from their seemingly limitless knowledge of automobile innards.
Little by little, people's car problems became the thin edge of the wedge for things much more interesting, personal, and hilarious. NPR picked up the show and it became required Saturday morning listening for gazillions of devotees.
Like any media phenomenon that inspires intense loyalty, Car Talk also generates detractors. They are legion.
But it would be a mistake not to give Click and Clack and their self-deprecating humor a chance. They so obviously love what they do. I love what they do, too. Some people don't. That's OK.
Just give'em a chance. My hunch is you'll soon be helpless with laughter along with the Magliozzi brothers and their cameo-appearing Mom.
Surprised at the Negatives Below..........2007-01-01
I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.
Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.
What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.
If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

Interesting memories of era in Washington and wartime China.......2003-07-04
As a staunch Cold War and extraordinarily connected political columnist in Washington for forty years, Joseph Alsop has many fascinating and amusing anecdotes to relate.
Moreover, the issues of the period between 1945 and 1965 (the period of his greatest influence) were far more momentous than the mostly tittle-tattle of much of the last decade of Washington journalism: the Cold War, the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the recurrent Berlin crises, the creation of NATO, SEATO and CENTO.
Alsop's connections with the high and mighty (even family connections such as Eleanor Roosevelt or former Connecticut neighbor Dean Acheson sent to Groton as a boy on Alsop's father's recommendation), and others are astonishing. He had much "inside" knowledge of how the "greats" and "near greats" dealt with global issues.
Alsop is also amusing and interesting about his WASP privileged background - his education at Groton and Harvard, the anticipated dress and social etiquette.
Although Alsop's close friendship with JFK may have given him the most pleasure in writing this memoir, it is his experience in China during W.W.II, about which he writes at wonderful length, that is truly historic.
In Chungking (China's war-time capital), Alsop played a central role in the corner of famous Flying Tigers' leader General Claire Chennault and T.V. Soong (sometime Foreign Minister and Chiang kai-Shek brother-in-law) in the great feud with the Stilwell-State-War Dept. - foreign correspondents over the proper political and military strategy for China. Alsop's accounts of what occured are memorable and truly valuable. (The heated feud persisted - so that long after Stilwell's death, Chennault was testifying before Congress that Stilwell was a traitor!).
Alsop actually secretly drafted the demand for Stilwell's recall for the Chinese government! He was convinced that Stilwell harmed the American cause by his unconcealed contempt for Chiang, by a proposed Burmese campaign military strategy that would divert needed resources from the more potentially fruitful air war, an unwillingness to allocate sufficient supplies to Chennault (and later to those seeking to defend Eastern China, particularly the forward-most airfields), and too great an openness to the possibility of allying with the Communists.
The China story is fascinating - in part because these are views that are in direct contradiction to most American accounts which are quite pro-Stilwell and anti-Chiang.
The memoirs convey throughout the sadness implied by the book's title. Alsop was suffering from cancer at the time of writing - and had felt increasingly out of the mainstream of American journalism and political opinion in the early 1970s due to his more conservative views on the Vietnam War. (E.g., Alsop is mentioned mostly in derision by Vietnam correspondent, David Halberstam in his book, The Best And the Brightest, a view that seems to have been shared by other journalists in Vietnam).
Alsop seems to have been of a rare breed - born into privilege, greatly enjoying his physical comfort(his man-servant astounded the Flying Tigers pilots) and yet who seems in his memoirs to be actually without any snobbery whatever and to have been irritated when he encountered it.
Smart, loving the battle, very opinionated (the opposite of an "objective" journalist or even soldier), the memoir is highly enjoyable and recommended - even if to be read by some as the reminiscences of a great contrarian.
