5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-07-18

Sean Clancy did a marvelous job with this book. I laughed, I cried (a lot). If anyone followed what happened to Barbaro this book is a must. Thank you Mr. Clancy for writing such a glowing story about this beautiful animal.

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful, must-read story.......2007-06-08

This book was beautifully written and I enjoyed every page. Barbaro touched the lives of so many of us and I still feel the sorrow of his tragic injury and ultimate death. What a courageous animal! I also want to give praise to Edgar Prado who wept for Barbaro and probably still does.

This strong, tough as nails jockey has a heart and lots of soul and I admire him tremendously. Barbaro meant much more than a paycheck to Mr. Prado. I am a fan and admirer of this man who felt so much for Barbaro mand who grieved with the rest of the world at his loss.

No praise and no words could pay proper tribute to Dr. Dean Richardson and all the staff who fought so hard to keep Barbaro alive and whose main objective was that he live a life free from pain. What a valient struggle!

It's wonderful knowing there are still professionals who truly care, and human beings who aren't afraid of having a heart and aren't afraid of allowing the world to see it.

5 out of 5 stars Read it Without Crying..........2007-05-13

This is a very well written book of the Barbaro story told with insight and compassion, without being maudlin. Of course when he wrote the book he thought Barbaro would live, as most of us who were rooting for him, did. So the tone is positive and the pictures are worth the price of the book. A great horse and a great story - worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Barbaro: A Nation's Love Story.......2007-05-12

What a gift this is. Wonderful pictures and step by step story of this incredible horse. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling read and especially recommended to horse racing enthusiasts in general.......2007-05-08

Not since the legendary Secretariat has any thoroughbred race horse captured the imagination of the public so swiftly and enthusiastically as Barbaro. His was a story of high achievement over great odds and the promise of a Triple Crown winner - only to suffer a catastrophic racing injury that resulted in the shattering of his right hind leg. "Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America's Heart" is also the story of a dedicated trainer, Michael Matz, and a veterinary science that brought the cutting edge of medical technology to the service of a badly injured and beloved animal. Profusely illustrated with full color photography throughout, "Barbaro" is a compelling read and especially recommended to horse racing enthusiasts in general, and Barbaro fans in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-01

I admit that I'm a very unique type of NASCAR fan. I love the drivers, love reading about them, checking out the standings, and perusing all the gossip about their personal lives. I don't actually like watching the races. See, how odd is that? Sure, occasionally I'll stumble into a room where the race is on television (thanks to my mom and stepfather, who are NASCAR fanatics), but other than that I won't waste hours sitting down to watch cars drive in endless circles. But, okay, yes, the crashes are kind of cool!

I was always a Dale Earnhardt fan. The number three car got my vote every time. When he died in a crash at the Daytona 500 on February 18, 2001, I was devasted--as were thousands upon thousands of NASCAR enthusiasts around the globe. The thing about NASCAR is that its devout fans come from every walk of life, from every part of the world, and they are a dedicated, loud-mouth bunch of people. They're also a family. When one of their "own" dies, as on that day when the racing world lost Dale Earnhardt, everyone mourned. Even fans who didn't like Earnhardt (and by that I mean they dared to cheer for another driver, like Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart), sadly and publicly grieved the loss of a legend.

Although I now root for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the number eight car, I still remember his father with pride. I still look for memorabilia with that number three. I still read books like SPEED SHOW, which discuss NASCAR, its history, and the mark it's made on the racing world. Filled with numerous facts, figures, and full-color photos, SPEED SHOW is sure to delight any and all NASCAR fans, regardless of age. The legacy of "The Intimidator" lives on today, as well it should.

For an easy-to-read, fact-filled history of NASCAR, its drivers, and its fans, SPEED SHOW is the book you need.

Book Description

Scientists have known for years that superior human athletes have hearts that are substantially larger than those of non-athletes. Human athletes can increase the size of their hearts through proper conditioning. Scientific research shows that superior racehorses, both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, also have hearts substantially larger than those of average horses. Unlike humans, the size of equine hearts is an inherited trait. Large racehorse hearts are passed from generation to generation along the X chromosome, through the mare. The challenge faced by breeders and buyers is learning how to capitalize on this important research. Marianna Haun was part of the U.S. team that conducted this ground-breaking research. In her book, The X Factor: The Relationship Between Inherited Heart Size and Racing Performance, she explains the significance of Thoroughbred and Standardbred heart scores and why those scores should be considered when buying or breeding a racehorse. Haun identifies the large-heart lines in the pedigrees of champion racehorses and shows how to find it in the pedigrees of horses that haven't yet been examined. After reading The X Factor, you will understand how heart size is measured and what the scores mean. You will learn how to trace large hearts through modern-day pedigrees and be able to find these genetic links in the horses you buy or breed. You will also see the body types that are consistent with large-hearted bloodlines that can be recognized and used in the selection of bloodstock. This is information you can use today to give your racing and breeding program the edge.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Useful on at least two levels.......2000-07-13

I think this book is good on two levels. As a primer for getting to know what the X-Factor is and how take advantage of it when breeding horses, I think book is essential. It also contains an absolute wealth of information that is incredibly valuable and interesting to breeders and pedigree researchers alike.

On the other hand, I found a number of ommisions & contradictions in Mrs. Haun's logic and quite a few problems or errors in the book itself. There are points where the serious researcher will have to make leaps of faith with Mrs. Haun and other points where you'll be left scratching your head wondering what's she's talking about. I found of typos (horse names spelled incorrectly in the book AIR FORBES ONE, ISINGLAS, etc) and the general impression I got was that her work hadn't been checked thoroughly for errors or was rushed to print before it was ready. At one point she mentions that Bend Or and Gainsborough trace their X-Factor genes to the mare Pocahontas which is flat wrong. I could find no such link and was left scratching my head.

While Marianna documents the Princequillo and War Admiral lines fairly well, it seems that there's a lack of documentation of the Mahmoud and Blue Larkspur lines. Whether this is because the author doesn't know the complete story with these lines or not is hard to tell. There also appear to be Omaha and Citation lines which she treats differently than the other lines. Unless you are an astute reader, you'll miss some of information Marianna has to share about these specific lines.

Overall, I found the book great. I was able to replicate and validate most of the connections she made and in many cases extend them by locating additional double copy mares which aren't included in the book.

I look forward to an update of this book with a list of additional X-Factor sires and more complete documentation.

5 out of 5 stars Researching the Large Heart x Factor In Thoroughbred Horses.......2000-05-08

The findings of a genetic link to a specific characteristic found in superior race horses is nothing less than spectacular, both in terms of significance to the Thoroughbred industry, and in the sheer volume of information that had to be researched in order to achieve these findings. In a time of genetic emphasis and the biotechnical explosion that is to come in the near future, it is amazing to pinpoint a genetic link that is recessive, yet has found it's way down the gene trail for over 200 years. I applaude Marianna Haun, as I applauded the greatest racehorse ever with the largest heart in history: Secretariat.

3 out of 5 stars A starting point.......1998-06-06

Marianna Haun's X-Factor is a starting point of information regarding the subject of the X chromosome, however, I felt the format of text hard to digest because the author's writing style is very broken up. The she wanders and comes back to the subject matter pages, and some times chapters, later. There is at least one pedigree error. Page 105 states Milan Mill is a daughter of Princequillo and the pedigree on page 106, shows her out of Caruso. Also, pedigrees of all listed DC mares would have been extremly informing and the index does not list all horses mentioned in the text. Myself being a researcher, would have liked to have had a bibliography included so I could varify the information presented. My general opinion of this work is that Ms. Haun compiled information from research work that has been done on this subject without a complete understanding of the subject matter herself.

3 out of 5 stars Good Primer on Large Heart Genetics.......1998-02-17

This is a good initial work on large heart genetics. The concepts are easy to understand with enough anecdotal text to ad interest. I was a little disappointed in the format of the index. The contents were good overall but, from my standpoint, I would have loved to have 4 or 5 generation pedigrees on all the Double Copy Mares as well as their produce information as an aid to tracing the Large Heart X-Factor into the pedigrees of my own horses. There are also several mares missing from the double copy list (notably daughters of La Troienne) who are full sisters to DC mares on the list or are by stallions who produced DC mares and by extrapolation are DC mares themselves. This book is a great starting point but I only rated it above average because there is so much more information that, if included, would have resulted in a superior text for the serious breeder. Hope Marianna Haun is writing an additional book to expound on this first work.

Book Description

Today’s wildest journeys are in reality not so different from the days of classic exploration. Modern challenges continue to be measured in terms of both physical and psychological dangers, with the adventure traveler combing not only the globe’s far corners but also the human interior—the “naked soul” of man and woman.

Here is the first collection of all-modern, 20th- and 21st-century adventure travel writing. It includes Tim Cahill’s account of exploring Yellowstone, Kim Salak’s trek in 2002 to meet the stone-age peoples of New Guinea, Nick Danziger’s crossing the mountains of Soviet Afghanistan disguised as a Muslim, and Theodore Roosevelt’s rafting down an unknown tributary of the Amazon. The Mammoth Book of Wild Journeys is full of hair-raising tales of adventure from all around the globe.

This is a Land-Mark SVH Book because it is the First to Revolve around Other Teenagers at Sweet Valley besides Jessica and Elizabeth...Other than that, it was an okay book.

3 out of 5 stars it is good.......1999-12-28

I feel bad for roger considering he has always had a humongus crush on Lila . But she has never felt the same passion for him at all. She liked to make fun of him and laugh when ha slipped or tripped. Then a big race came and roger decided to run. He won not only first but Lilas heart. She was kissing his shoes pretty much. Then he finds out who his true love is and that lilas a fake. Will he win th final race? Will his true love still want him too?

    4 out of 5 stars Why?.......1999-04-11

Why does Roger like Lila? He barely ever talks to her, and she always puts him down. (The romance in this book is similar to that in #8) The part besides that, him having to deal with a cruel boss, and his friends helping him out is really good. I'm glad they talked some sense into him.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly typical SVH teen romance fare........1998-06-20

Penniless outcast Roger ignores his loyal "friend" Olivia, while pining for snobby Lila. A scholarship race offers a chance to qualify as a suitable boyfriend for the girl of his dreams, but how can he run without losing his job and displaying his poverty?

Fairly standard SVH romance attempts to deal sensitively with the problems of poverty-stricken kids at school. One of the better volumes.

    Book Description

When Nan Mooney was seven years old, she sat down in her grandmother May-May's living room to watch her first ever horse race. In that single afternoon, she launched what would become a turbulent romance between a woman and a sport.

My Racing Heart is part memoir, part journey into the compelling world of Thoroughbred horse racing. At its heart is Nan's relationship with her grandmother, an adventurer, racing connoisseur, and woman of courage and compassion. May-May fostered in Nan a love of Thoroughbreds and the track, ushering her into a rare corner of the world where risk taking is daily currency.

Nan thought her emotional link to the races died with May-May, only to have it roar back to life a decade later at New York's Belmont Park. This renewed relationship culminates in a grown-up appreciation for a universe where expectations are constantly defied, and in the realization of a longtime dream -- a trip to the Kentucky Derby.

Far more than just a personal tale, My Racing Heart lets readers in on the wild culture and fabulous creatures that rise up around the racetrack. Nan Mooney probes every aspect of the sport: the horses, jockeys, and trainers, the gambling and corruption, its ages-old history, and its forever offbeat society. She takes readers from the backstretch of a small-town track to the stands at Churchill Downs, from the mind of an intrepid gambler to the soul of a Thoroughbred. She explores how the sport itself, and the men and women who participate in it, flourish upon the principle that there are no sure things.

My Racing Heart will speak to every horse lover, to every sports nut, and to everyone who cherishes the thrill of possibility or has ever craved a place to run wild. This unique and exquisite memoir perfectly captures the lure, the glory, and the heartbeat of the track.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not bad........2004-03-17

Nan Mooney, My Racing Heart (Harper, 2002)

Nan Mooney loves horses. Specifically, Thoroughbreds, the ones who hit the track, dust it up with six to twelve of their closest friends, and make humans gape in awe at the process. This odd amalgam of personal-memoir-cum-treatise-on-track-life is not an unfamiliar breed to the horse fan; the measuring stick against which all such books are brought is Bill Barich's stunning Laughing in the Hills. I'm sure one day, another book that good in that genre will arrive. While My Racing Heart has its good points, to be simple about it, this ain't it.

Where Barich succeeds as so many others (Michael Klein, Mooney, Liz Mitchell, and many others) fail is in his ability to take two different things that have inherently different paces and make them merge together into one book whose readability is consistent across chapters on differing subjects (in Barich's case, handicapping the races at Golden Gate while dealing with his mother's cancer). He meshes the two in such a way that, despite being parallel narratives happening a country apart from one another, the whole thing flows. Seamless, like an egg, as Stephen King once said. In Mooney's case the two main threads are a basic nuts-and-bolts look at the Thoroughbred industry from someone with enough clout to get inside the lines but not enough cynicism to keep pumping out the same old platitudes and a memoir about her grandmother, who introduced her to horse racing at an age tender enough that I suspect her parents weren't very happy. Either of these two things on their own would have stood as a book in itself; the slow, meandering passages about her grandmother and how the two of them interacted and the snappy, sometimes sarcastic looks at track life. It is when the two are entwined with one another that things break down to the extent they do, with the reader finding himself transported with no warning from the high of making friends with a Kentucky Derby contender to a lazy meditation on what life must have been like in the early twenties in Alaska.

Not to say it isn't worth reading; that's not it at all. There is some fine stuff here. It just could have used a little tuning. ** ½

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.......2004-01-16

I bought this book hoping for some real insight into the world of Thoroughbred racing from the history and allure of the breed to the off limits world of the backstretch. Given the authors credentials, one might think that that's what you'd get. This book, however, is the most self indulgent, cloying piece of pap ever put to paper. This book reads more like a teenage drama queen's diary than a satisfying chronicle of The Sport of Kings. The only reason to buy this book would be the picture on the cover; it's phenomenal. Unfortunately, the photographer wasn't involved with writing the book.

2 out of 5 stars I had to put it down..........2004-01-15

This book is so full of useless, flowery writing that I just couldn't take it anymore. Her method of description is simply annoying. Not only that... every chapter begins with lame stories of May May, Nan's grandmother, that just about drove me crazy.

3 out of 5 stars i cannot read this book..........2003-11-07

simply because the author's name is 'nan'. so sorry, but when i see the name 'nan mooney' it makes me want to vomit, or at least pass on reading this. anyone who walks around and authors books and attaches the name 'nan' screams overweight housewife to me. please pass on this because it really is wrong to read a book by an author with sch a name. if i wrote a book, and signed 'little danny o'malley' would you read it? hell no. or heck, which i'm sure amazon will put in the previous sentence.

    5 out of 5 stars Magical..........2003-05-27

Ms. Mooney's engaging writing style brings the world of horse racing magically alive. A lover of horses and horse racing since she was a child (thanks to her spectacular grandmother, whose story is woven throughout the book), Ms. Mooney's passion for the sport is infectious. I especially liked the thorough and entertaining way she covered the history of the sport. I'm looking forward to reading more from her; that her next work will immensely please seems to be a safe bet.

    1 out of 5 stars Poor Writting.......2003-11-13

The content is poor, and the writting is amature at best. So even though the writter understands the sport, it isnt presented very well. I was very dissopointed, yet one more poor attempt at taking a great subject, and killing it with poor writting. I would not recomend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes - A great overview!.......2003-11-12

I've been a NASCAR fan for years and know there are many other women like me who will enjoy reading this book about the important roles women now play in the racing world. And, not just as driver's wives. However, the insight into the lifestyles of those married to drivers is fascinating. From Katie Kenseth to Stevie Waltrip the old guard and the new "young guns" of the sport are all represented. The family photos included are a great punctuation in each of the stories of these women who really opened up to the author about intimate family details. If your're already a racing fan you are definitely gonna love it, and if you aren't, you will be after reading this book. It's not just about the guys anymore - even at NASCAR!

    5 out of 5 stars nascar women.......2003-11-08

I don't have interest in NASCAR but my husband does so I bought this book. It's great and tells us the feminine side of the story.. WOW

5 out of 5 stars NASCAR Woman with A Heart.......2003-11-07

This author definitely has a heart. Of all the books out there, Ms. Wood's book captures the essence of the women of America's number one spectator sport. I especially enjoyed reading the exerpt on Mrs. Kenseth. I am happy to see a down-to-earth couple lead NASCAR in 2004. The pictures are also nice. Sometimes we don't get to see the women behind the drivers on television. It seems as if they only select a certain group of people. This truly is a wide-scope representation of women in this sport. For any young woman looking for a career in NASCAR, this is a must read!!! If you offered six stars, I would definitely rate the book even higher. If you like NASCAR, read this book!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best cycling book ever!.......2000-07-09

Without question the best book ever written about the history of American cycling! If you could only own one book on the subject, this is it. Readers will be so amazed and proud of those early racers who laid the path for those that followed. Peter Nye makes this history come alive.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive History of American Cycling.......1998-06-10

Peter Nye has brilliantly captured the almost forgotten past of the Bicycle. From crazy invention to America's most popular sport (at the turn of the century), Nye shares the stories and experiences that vividly illustrate the evolution of bicycling. Today the sport is growing and the book captures the stout spirit of those with "hearts of lions" both past and present.

5 out of 5 stars Every sports journalist should read this one!.......1997-07-11

Probably the best book on American bicycle racing. Every sports journalist should read this one. Since the history of bicyle racing is one of the most forgotten sports in American history, anyone reading this book will learn about the characters and nuances that shaped the sport. A must read for any cyclist and those interested in the sport. If journalists read this one (particularly TV reporters) they would not come across so ignorant when reporting on a cycling related event.
