Jezebel and Delilah have plenty to teach contemporary Christian women, according to Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them. In this self-help book, Liz Curtis Higgs tells fictionalized, contemporary stories based on the lives of biblical characters including Eve, Potiphar's Wife, and the Woman at the Well. In verse-by-verse commentary, Higgs summarizes each life's lessons and provides a list of questions for personal consideration or group discussion. The overall message of each chapter is the same: "Good Girls and Bad Girls both need a Savior. The goodness of your present life can't open the doors of heaven for you. The badness of your past life can't keep you out either." In its effort to turn readers' minds heavenward, Bad Girls draws a distinction between fun and joy. Associated with "fleshly pleasures," fun "is temporary at best; it's risky, even dangerous, at worst." Joy, on the other hand, is found in God's "gift of grace." Perhaps the book's greatest weakness is its inability to see that "fun," in many lives, is a holy and necessary means of attaining "joy." --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

Women everywhere marvel at those “good girls” in Scripture–Sarah, Mary, Esther–but on most days, that’s not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they’re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel’s take-charge pride or Eve’s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today’s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.

So what’s a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God’s grace, choose a better path. In Bad Girls of the Bible, Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them.

Whether they were “Bad to the Bone,” “Bad for a Season, but Not Forever” or only “Bad for a Moment,” these infamous sisters show women how not to handle the challenges of life. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.

We are studying this in Sunday School. The input from the book and all the other ladies is amazing. This is a great book for boosting our self esteem and learning to depend on GOD more.

1 out of 5 stars Female Chauvinist .......2007-03-10

Our church book study group mistakenly purchased this Bad Girls of the Bible instead of the one by the other author.

While I had great difficulty getting through the first chapter, I am now using this book to improve my understanding of the Bible, and to learn more about ancient times.

This writer makes-up her own story lines, and conveniently leaves out portions of chapters and verses that do not fit her story line. For example, in chapter two, she states that Egypt where Joseph is held as a slave by Potiphar, is a dry hot land. Perhaps she should read just a little earlier in the Bible. In Genesis 13:10, we are told different.
10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar.

While the ordering of this book was a mistake on the part of the person who ordered the books for us, I believe it is a Godsend for us to read and discuss this book, though I doubt we will actually be using the questions at the end of each chapter. Instead we will ask questions regarding her inaccurate portrayal of these women and the facts of history.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Women's bible study.......2007-02-06

Our women's small group has gotten alot of knowledge and insight from this book! Bad Girls of the Bible helps us discuss some topics that we might not otherwise. The author is wonderful at helping us see the character of these women. It is very well written. I highly recommend this book for a bible study with your girlfriends!

5 out of 5 stars Funny, moving, meaningful.......2007-01-11

Liz Curtis Higgs juxtaposes fiction and nonfiction in the same book. Read the stories of modern "bad girls" while guessing what Bible character they represent. Then read the nonfiction essay on the Biblical "bad girl". Find out how they were bad, why they were bad, and what God did about it. Liz describes herself as a "former bad girl", so she really gets inside the skin of these women. This book is so good that I can't keep it on hand. I've lent out and given away multiple copies to women who never fail to enjoy the book and experience God in a meaningful way. Get one for yourself and one for your daughter/mother/best friend. (I'm a former bad girl myself.) Then go for Really Bad Girls of the Bible and Unveiling Mary Magdalene by the same author.

this book is not very good. if you have ever had sex this book does not tell you anything new. basically it tells you a couple positions. guy on top. girl on top. it tells you not to wear a flannel pajamas and bunny slippers to bed if you want to turn your partner on. just basic things that are nothing more than common knowledge. sorry to say im very disappointed and would not reccomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Serious results!.......2006-07-21

I started reading this book when my boyfriend mentioned that his cousin was reading it, and he believed that I defined "good girl", and needed to shift over to "bad girl" by reading this book. I thought our sex life was great, but my partner is older and more experienced than I am, so I took his words seriously and ordered the book.

I'm only 3/4 through the book and it has made a SERIOUS difference in my sex life. We're having more pleasure and more FUN than ever imaginable! I totally rock his world now, and I can't imagine being a good girl ever again!

Most of this book isn't about sex, really. It's about your image of yourself, and how you have been "taught", growing up, that thoughts about sex are bad and that wanting sex automatically makes you promiscuous. It teaches you to embrace sex as something healthy, fun, and needed! Keesling pulls you outside to look at the way you have been behaving, and explains why you're doing this and how to change it to make you feel more confident, and sexier! This goes for walking, talking, sitting, standing, dressing, everything. And it doesn't tell you to dress like a prostitute, either, so don't worry. All of this comfort in everyday life makes you more confident under the sheets. You learn to feel comfortable telling your guy what you want, asking him what he wants, delivering upon both yours and his needs, and having a TON of fun!!

I am so happy I have read this book, and I can't believe I had a sex life before this! This book is fun, informative, and very easy to read. The context is casual, so it feels like you're having a one-on-one chitchat with your favorite girlfriend, which is never boring. What've you got to lose by picking up this book? Seriously!! Good girl no more!! ;)

3 out of 5 stars Newbie.......2006-03-28

I bought the book to help my post-baby frumpiness. After reading the book I think it would have been a fabulous read before I got married. It's a great introduction to seduction and very informative -- but if I tried to bring a feather duster into the bedroom my husband would explode into laughter.

5 out of 5 stars A liberating, fun book.......2005-07-11

This book goes far beyong 'bedroom skills' and deals with how to act like a sensual woman through your daily life. The author covers how what we wear affects how we feel, our walk, posture, the thoughts that go through our minds. It is very interesting. Being faithfully married for fourteen years, this has helped me to be even more attracted to my husband, and our sex life has gone off the charts, as I feel good about who I am. Barbara Keesling writes in a fun way, like she was sitting down having a conversation with you. Great sex truly is 99% mental. This book is sure to help you have the sex you've always wanted if you follow through with the suggestions she makes.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-03-09

As a preface, my mom died when i was 13. I've been wandering around womanhood and feminity without a compass for 10 years. This got me back on course. I'm learning to embrace the power that comes along with being a woman, not only that, but i'm learning to focus it and not be ashamed of it.

This book is not just about sex, but it's about how a woman should see herself. It's about saying it's okay to be sexual, think about sex, enjoy sex, exude sex. It is not about being a slut. It's about being empowered.

Product Description

Ricardo, at an early age, sees his life-long dream fulfilled: to live in Paris. But an encounter with a past love will change everything. The young girl, adventurer, pragmatic, wicked, calculating, and mischievous, will drag him out of his small world of ambitions. This is the story of the intimate love that occupies more than three decades of Ricardo’s life, and it is also a fascinating tale traveling through Europe, South America, and Japan. Starring in the backdrop are Peru’s history from 1950 to 1987 and its swinging from democracy to dictatorship; Paris in the sixties and its great philosophers Sartre and Camus; the decade of the 70s in London, the birth of a new culture, drugs, music, hippies, freedom of love; Japan’s big dealer lords, and, finally, Spain halfway through the 80s. Creating an admirable tension between comedy and tragedy, Mario Vargas Llosa plays with reality and fiction to release a story in which love presents itself as indefinable, owner of a thousand faces, just like the mischievous girl. Passion and distance, chance and destiny, pain and pleasure... Which is the true face of love? Pasión y distancia, azar y destino, dolor y disfrute... ¿Cuál es el verdadero rostro del amor?

4 out of 5 stars Postive reading for girls- a Mom's point of view.......2007-06-09

I bought this book for my 12 year old daughter. I feel it is a wonderfully written book series for "tween girls." It is very positive- sometimes a bit too positive for real life at times. If reading books like these make girls think about how they treat each other and be kinder to one another, then I say it's a good thing! I am reading the books after my daughter finishes with them. And enjoying chatting with her about the different issues contained in the stories.

At times the story can be a little hokey/unrealistic. The girl's homeroom teacher assigns the students tables to sit at lunch, and has a tablecloth on each table. Charlotte has a klutzy moment and notices her zipper is down. She unknowingly zips the table cloth in her pants, making a huge mess and angering the other girls at the table. The girls start off not liking each other and are told a sleepover might help them to work it out. At the sleepover the girls become best friends. I have never had any of these things happen to me in real life, but it makes for a good story. And brings the girls together. In the stories, aside from the hokiness, the girls have real life problems- lying to their parents, being the new girl, overextending themselves, weight issues, being bullied, parents separating, having an ill parent, etc. I feel the author wraps it all up in a positive but not perfect story book way.

I liked that the girls all represent something different. They are of different ethnic backgrounds, have different issues & problems as well as different personalities & talents. The girls compliment each other very well. The BSG
(Beacon Street Girls) try to protect their friendships and are very supportive of each other. In the books, there are girls who are nasty. The BSG, aren't fond of those girls but are never mean or cruel in return. Hopefully, this will encourage the girls who read them to be kinder to people/ friends than they had been. I can't wait to read the next book!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE BEACON STREET GIRLS!!!!!!.......2006-09-30

My mom just brought me these BSG books and they are the best. Everyone should read them. I only read two of them so far but we are going to buy the rest soon. If you are a girl and you like to read you HAVE TO get these books TODAY!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Booorrrring!.......2005-11-21

my mom got me this book cause she read about it in a newspaper or something. i think it has a stupid title. i read that loads of girls suppposedly loved it so i tried it anyway. but i think its grown ups who like this book cause its not like real girls. this book is like a tv movie for girls ( not even cable) but written by a guidance counsellor or a shrink not a real writer writing from their heart or their life. its like the book is good for you but not good. i think girls could write better themselves. its 2 babyish and 2 adult. btw the books got one of everything like a menu at an appleby's or denny's: one asian girl, one african american girl, one red head, one blond, one shy one, one "drama queen," got it? 2 many girls.I like babysitters club better or harry potter. And one has a father moving to oxford in england to teach, like the best college in the world. how many dad's do that? and her mom is dead, and another girl's mom is sick and another girl's mom and dad are breaking up but she can save them. the writing is ok and i kind of like a couple of the girls but i would not read this again or read another one or buy a cd or anything.

5 out of 5 stars great book for and "interesting" time.......2007-01-09

What a great book this is - I bought it for my daughter who is at an age where she has lots of questions - some easy to ask, some not. This book has provided a save place for those questions along with work sheets to get her "journaling". I have and will recommend this book to my friends with daughters this age (11+).

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2004-05-27

I have been reviewing books for girls who are in their preteen years. The interactive book I like best is "Girls: What's so Bad about being Good?" (Authors: Harriet Mosatche and 12 year-old daughter Liz Lawner). The format is teen friendly and inviting. A wide range of topics will captivate young readers. The book is written in a format that will guide and encourage young women to make positive choices. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2001-08-18

This book has everything I was looking for. The best part was that the information was down to earth, stuff I can actually use in my life. When I had my copy at camp, all the other girls kept grabbing it so they could read it too!

5 out of 5 stars Read this Great Advice Book.......2001-07-07

I just finished reading this book, and really loved the fact that you can get advice from a mom and a daughter. The book is funny, has lots of stuff to do, and has loads of interesting and very useful information. The authors really understand kids my age.

Book Description

When it Comes to Badness, There's Nothing New Under the Sun

In her best-selling book Bad Girls of the Bible, Liz Curtis Higgs breathed new life into ancient stories depicting eight of the most infamous women in scriptural history, from Jezebel to Delilah. Biblically sound and cutting-edge fresh, Bad Girls already has helped thousands of women experience God's grace anew by learning more about our nefarious sisters.

And there are more where they came from! With Really Bad Girls of the Bible, Liz reveals the power of God's sovereignty in the lives of other shady ladies we know by reputation but have rarely studied in depth: Bathsheba, the bathing beauty. Jael, the tent-peg-toting warrior princess. Herodias, the horrible beheader. Tamar, the widow and not-so-timid temptress. Athaliah, the deadly daughter of Jezebel. And three ancient women whose names we do not know but who have much to teach us: the ashamed Adulteress, the bewitching Medium of En Dor, and the desperate Bleeding Woman.

The eye-opening stories of these eight "Really Bad" women demonstrate one really life-changing concept: the sovereign power of God to rule our hearts and our lives with grace, compassion, and hope.

1 out of 5 stars So Very Disappointed.......2006-09-12

I had reservations about it when my small group decided to give this book a whirl, and although I was game and tried to like it, I just couldn't.

Liz's overfamiliar style, her judgemental tone, and pandering to churchy already-good-girls reads like a book that reinforces smugness among the churched.

I especially did not like the way she glossed over the difference in 21st Century standards for women, and instead just judged them against today's free-er women's options and opportunities.

I will say that we had many good conversations because we read the book, but in the end, we were all severely disappointed in the book itself.

Examples of what I mean: some of the "bad girl" scenarios seemed like she was stretching to fill pages, "bad for a good reason" - what?, or nattering on and on about David's sin with Bathsheba - wait, he's not a girl!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Bible study.......2006-03-08

Our church's women's ministry used this book for our Bible study and enjoyed it tremendously. I could relate to so many of the characters and was so horrified by some of the others! I enjoyed reading about the many relatively obscure Biblical women. We had several elderly ladies in our group who were surprised to read stories they'd never remembered reading before. I liked that Higgs focuses on Biblical women who were strong leaders, even if they were bad for a season.

We laughed, blushed, cried, and enjoyed every minute of discussing this book and how it related to our lives. Her message of grace for bad girls is one we all need to hear. I look forward to reading and sharing more of Higgs' books.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Kind of Bible Study, Different and Good.......2005-10-19

I have to say Liz Curtis Higgs sheds new light, at least for me, on a lot of those women in the Bible. You know, I've read about all these women in Ms. Curtis's book before, but somehow when I read my bible I missed a whole heck of a lot. I don't know how, because when I read this book I wanted to slap myself upside the head plenty of times. Duh, I'd mudder, how come I didn't see that? How come I didn't get it? Well I'm getting a lot of it now. As a Bible teacher, Ms. Curtis really excells and she makes it oh so interesting. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Really Bad Girls is a challenge to us to grapple with the gray moral areas we face as did our Biblical sisters.......2005-09-25

Our church has a Women's First Friday Bible Book Discussion Group and we've just finished "Bad Girls of the Bible" . Now we're beginning "Really Bad Girls of the Bible" and boy are we ready. Liz writes in truly personal way, with intense, genuine passion. Her discussion questions make fabulous jumping off points for our women's group. Fantastic author, FABULOUS book!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Outdoes Herself!.......2005-02-11

I got this book after having read the first one. I really enjoyed the first book, but Liz really outdoes herself with #2. When the title says, "Really Bad," she is not kidding. There are several stories that I had read several times in the Bible and not grasped the severity of them until having read Liz's modern day version. Yet there are some characteristic traits in these women that can be found in every one of us. A must read!

Book Description

The veil has been lifted.

Discover the Gospel truth about the most myth-understood woman of the New Testament. Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute? An adulteress? The wife of Jesus? An ancient goddess? Liz Curtis Higgs, best-selling author of Bad Girls of the Bible and Really Bad Girls of the Bible, combines heartfelt contemporary fiction with extensive biblical research to bring to life the real Mary Magdalene of the Bible.

With her own eyes, she saw him.

With her own ears, she heard him.
With her own hands, she touched him.

Unveiling Mary Magdalene opens with the fictional journey of Mary Margaret Delaney, a madwoman adrift in modern Chicago. Her moving story, closely paralleling the biblical account, is followed by a verse-by-verse study of the first-century Mary Magdalene and her life-changing encounters with the Christ.

“Liz has done it again! What hope and promise this will bring.”
— Kay Arthur

“The unforgettable portrait of a courageous woman.”
— Rebecca St. James

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A dose of encouraging reality.......2007-01-11

Wow! This book is fabulous. Written with typical Liz humor and deep insight, this book is a must for anyone who wants to really understand Mary Magdalene. Liz lets us know why most of our perceptions about Mary Magdalene are erroneous. She also has that wonderful ability to modernize the story for us. We see a fictional modern woman and situation juxtaposed against the scriptural Mary. This really brings Mary to life. If you've read the DaVinci Code, you'll want to compare the two Marys represented.

I can also recommend Bad Girls of the Bible and Really Bad Girls of the Bible by the same author, who describes herself as a "former bad girl." Funny, moving, and meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars terrific two-part combo.......2004-05-28

?The Story?. On an icy Chicago day, Pastor Jake Stauros of Calvary Fellowship sees the desperate mumbling woman in her Goodwill wardrobe struggling to walk so he offered her help. Mary Margaret Delaney pretends to ignore his kindness and just keeps slipping, and incoherently saying ?Luna?. Jake truly wants to help her, but wonders how to reach Mary Margaret without a miracle as she acts as if demons possess her mind, and soul. Yet with God?s help he has assisted several rag tag muffins now part of the Calvary Fellowship. He will continue to pray for Mary Margaret, show her she is not alone, and optimistically hope she will join them. Mary Margaret?s story is a brilliantly written modern day parable paralleling that of Mary Magdalene so that readers can place a contemporary context on perhaps the bible?s ?baddest girl?.

?The Study?. Will the real Mary Magdalene stand up? Was she a courageous individual who followed Jesus and quickly became more than just a believer, but the person who was honored with being the first to see his reappearance? Was she a prostitute, Jesus? earthly lover or was that bad PR by a male dominated medieval church? Was she possessed by demons? Liz Curtis Higgs answers all the above and more with a thought provoking, well researched look at the New Testament. Using specific references that are easy to follow, Ms. Higgs furbishes a powerful intriguing case of who was the real Mary Magdalene.

UNVEILING MARY MAGDALENE is a terrific two-part combo that provides a wonderful novelette with an insightful biblical study that enables the audience to come away with a full understanding of one of the bible?s ?goodest? girls.

Book Description

“Here’s the truth, sister: Mary Magdalene has been knocking at the door of my heart for three years.
“She got squeezed out of Bad Girls of the Bible when I realized I needed more time to research her complex story. Then she was dropped from the roster for Really Bad Girls of the Bible because Tamar and Bathsheba took up more than their allotted pages. (Pushy, huh?) Now I know the real reason why Mary M waited so patiently in the wings: She deserves a book all her own!
“Come meet the genuine Mary Magdalene of the Bible–not the scarlet-draped legend–and follow her one-of-a-kind story of deliverance and dedication, despair and declaration. Like my previous Bad Girls books, Mad Mary begins with the fictional journey of Mary Margaret Delaney, a bad woman–or was it madwoman?–adrift in contemporary Chicago, desperate for someone to save her from herself.

“Once Mary Delaney’s story has prepared our hearts for learning, we’ll leave the Windy City and go verse by verse through Mary of Magdala’s ancient biblical tale, tossing aside modern misconceptions as we embrace the real Mary M.
“Prepare to be amazed by this eye-opening sister who was transformed twice when You-Know-Who showed up and spoke her name. Oh, Mary!”
– Liz Curtis Higgs

4 out of 5 stars Well written.......2006-10-14

If you're looking for a scholarly book about Mary Magdalene, you're probably better off reading Margaret Starbird or Jane Schaberg. But if you want a well written story about the life of Mary, then this book is for you. Higgs is a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction, and sometimes she blurs the lines. Her previous books on Bad Girls in the Bible were just a prelude to this one book on Mary, which is actually two books in one - the first half is a fictional story and the second half is the factional stone. I say "factional" rather than non-fiction because Higgs is very liberal in her interpretation of the gospels and rarely does she address alternate theories.

Higgs' discussion of Mary Magdalene assumes that Mary is not Mary from Bethany, yet there are a great many reasons to assume she is, and Higgs ignores most of these issues in her zeal to isolate Mary M as only the woman from whom 7 demons are exorcized. Yet in focusing exclusively on this aspect of Mary's story, Higgs seems oblivious to the meaning of the 7 demons within 1st Century jewish context. Moreover, she takes the easy road by assuming that Magdalene refers to the fact that Mary came from Magadan, when it makes more sense that Magdalene derived from Migdal (tower) and referred to the fact that Mary was the "tower", which, as Margaret Starbird points out, is equivalent to saying "Mary the Great". Jesus' disciples all had nicknames (Peter was called Rocky, John and James were the Brothers of Thunder, Judas was the Daggerman, Simon was the Zealot, etc.) None of these nicknames referred to places but to personality characteristics, so "Mary the Great" is in keeping with Jesus' nicknaming stragey, and "Mary from Magadan" is not.

Don't let these criticisms stop you from reading this book. It is a quick read, quite funny in parts, and generally stays true to the gospels. It is informative up to a point. I recommend it, with some cautions.

5 out of 5 stars Bible's most notorious "bad girl" not really bad at all!.......2002-08-14

After reading Liz Curtis Higg's previous works, "Bad Girls of the Bible" and "Really Bad Girls of the Bible," I, too, was left wondering why she left out the "baddest" girl of the them all, Mary Magdalene. Well, this book more than made up for the omission. And it turns out, Mary wasn't that bad at all--she wasn't a prostitute like most people believe, she wasn't the one who annointed Jesus' feet, and she was never in love with Jesus. The only bad thing that happened to her was that she was possessed by demons (and haven't we all been at some point in our lives?...just kidding). Misinterpretation of her story by a patriarchal medieval Catholic Church is what gave her the bad reputation. Thank God Liz came along to set things straight! She explores who Mary Magdalene REALLY was through careful study of her appearances in the New Testament. (And as always, Liz makes Bible study accessible to everyone, even those who have never touched a Bible in their lives.) If anything, Mary Magdalene was a powerful and influential woman in her day--she was independently wealthy, she wasn't married at the time so she was free to follow Jesus as she chose, and Jesus Himself placed great importance upon her within his circle of followers. In fact, it was she (and none of the other (male) disciples) whom He chose to appear to first and foremost after His resurrection. That's got to say something about the woman herself!

What I love most about Liz's books is that she tells us how God EMPOWERS women. After living though so many centuries of the Christian church being run by men and limiting women's involvment, many have come to see as Christianity being "anti-woman." But according to Liz, this is not true. She presents God as very pro-woman, and points out many examples of how God has used women over the centuries to do great things. But I would recommend for ANYONE to read this (man or woman) because there are so many misconceptions of Mary Magdalene in our culture today, and it's about time we change our beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars MAD ABOUT MARY.......2002-08-03

THIS IS ONE OF MRS. HIGGS' MOST THOUGHT PROVOKING BOOKS YET, IN MY OPINION. IT IS VERY WELL RESEARCHED AND WRITTEN IN A MANNER THAT MAKES YOU GO BACK AND READ THE SCRIPTURES REGARDING MARY OF MAGDALA.

MRS. HIGGS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE WRITERS. THOUGH MOST OF HER BOOKS TICKLE YOUR FUNNY BONE, THEY GIVE YOU CAUSE FOR GREAT THOUGHT TOO. I PUT HER ON MY LIST OF TOP WRITERS, UP THERE WITH MAX LUCADO.

2 out of 5 stars Tell me the truth but..........2002-05-01

I bought this book to have a better insight on her life and story. The first part of the book is about Mary M. if she lived today. It was a good story, but that is not what I bought the book for. The second part of the book is nothing but the writers view of religion and not about the life of Mary M. Oh well, you can't have it all.

5 out of 5 stars I'm mad about "Mad Mary.".......2002-03-13

I loved her books "Bad Girls of the Bible" and "Really Bad Girls of the Bible", so I couldn't wait to get my hands on her latest, "Mad Mary." I wasn't disappointed. WOW! what a book. I couldn't put it down. Ms Higgs does it again. She stirred my emotions with her dipiction of a modern day Mary. I could feel this woman's pain. I found myself in tears more than once.
I repeatedly compared the fictional charactors to their real counterparts, in scripture. Jake is so compassionate, it's easy to see him as a modern Jesus. I could go on but I don't want to give away any of the other charactors.
Once again I am in awe of Ms Higgs talent.
I have discussed parts of her previous books in a Sunday School lesson. I have a feeling I'll be working this one in too.

Who hasn't fantasized about ditching work and pulling a Thelma and Louise? Well, don't even think about taking a road trip without a copy of Cameron Tuttle's Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road. Tuttle, who's crisscrossed the country several times, has written a hilarious, in-your-face, travelogue/self-help book (glove-compartment-size with a nifty hot-pink cover) that's sure to get adventure-seeking gals everywhere in their cars. The Bad Girl's Guide is jam-packed with practical and not-so-practical information on where to go (the Elvis Is Alive Museum, Lizzie Borden's House), which Road Sisters to bring along (preferably ones with trust funds), essential tunes (Donna Summer's "Bad Girls," natch), as well as indispensable tips, such as 14 ways to open a beer bottle on your car and 11 uses for a condom (pony-tail holder, snakebite tourniquet). The format, with various sidebars and boxes, is a bit cluttered and the nuts and bolts info a bit sketchy, but Tuttle covers a lot of ground in 192 pages--and she answers that all-important question: what car did Thelma and Louise drive? A '66 Thunderbird convertible. --Jill Fergus

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Brilliant and Inspiring.......2007-07-17

I really love this book. I read The Bad Girl's Guide to Getting What You Want first, because based on the title it had more to do with my situation than the other books in the series. I enjoyed it, but I have to say this book is better. Even if, like me, you have no real desire to go on a road trip, this book is hilarious inspiring. It quickly had me excited to pee outdoors, lie about my name, and sneak into empty motel rooms to take a free shower (this coming from a girl who normally obeys speedlimits, pays bills promptly, and is always so polite and tragically walked all over by authority figures). If you're looking for something to inspire your inner wild woman burried under layers and layers of social niceties, and rules about ladylikeness, this is the book.

4 out of 5 stars Marshmallows are a Must-Have.......2007-03-11

My freshman year of college I took a trip to New Orleans with my roommate. Her mom lent us her minivan and left this book and a bag of marshmallows on the floor of the car. Six hours in a car had never passed so quickly! This book makes long drives of monotonous highway FUN. I wouldn't say it's a cover-to-cover read. Just pack it with your car snacks and flip through the pages to have some fun. Next time, I'll be sure to add a couple squirt guns to my supplies list.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me look forward to my next road trip!.......2006-08-27

Funny yet practical ideas on making the most of your trip trip when you just want to get away from the everyday stuff. Where to park overnight to sleep if you have to. How to get out of stuff, like speeding tickets. Where to take a shower or clean up while on the road.

Some stuff I would never be brave enough to try, like egging on a policeman by swigging a NA beer in front of them while you're driving! Why take that chance? We can get ourselves in trouble in lots of other ways besides having to interact with the cops on purpose! Good advise on where to bring your car if you're having car trouble. Funny dress up ideas if you want to exhibit a "road persona". Think Thelma and Louise. Now, if only I had that classic muscle car...

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it! .......2006-06-13

My girlfriend and I saw this book at Borders and had to sit down and check it out. We laughed so hard we nearly got kicked out of the cafe. People were staring. The smart ones came up and asked what we were reading and got their own copy. If you have a wacky sense of humor, this is your book!

3 out of 5 stars Impractical, raunchy, and pretty darn funny.......2005-12-29

A friend lent me this small, vinyl-covered pink book, and I read it in about two days. It's a fun, comedic chick guide for the all-American road trip, packing one-liners and humorous drawings in side-by-side with suggestions for trip destinations and crazy traveling advice. The book encourages girls to get out of the ruts in their lives and hit the highway with their favorite tunes. Packing light, eating junk, picking up cute hitchikers, and taking wild friends are must-dos, according to Tuttle. While most of the book's suggestions (such as using marshmallows to plug a muffler hole or jam a parking meter) are totally implausible, they do provide a few laughs. Not on my must-read list, but a nice, quick little book if you need a light pick-me-up.
