5 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting books I have read recently.......2007-08-23

Joel Greenblatt's book is a masterpiece of investment information. The book provides valuable information for anyone involved in the markets, whether they are an individual investor or a finance professional.

The book details several types of special situation investing and explains the pros and cons of these situations. What was most impressive about this book however, is that manner in which he manages to explain everything he is discussing in such a clear, and engaging fashion. Although I do not usually think of finance books as "page turners" I read this one virtually, in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars My other favorite book.......2007-05-17

I know the title of the book sounds like a joke but it's a great book. In fact, it is my favorite investment book after Warren Buffett's letters to shareholders. Joel Greenblatt takes you to investing areas that aren't followed closely by Wall Street and help you make money at the same time.

I am also a sucker for investment books that are fun to read and doesn't cause me to feel like I'm chewing glasses. This doesn't mean this book isn't top-notch! For what it's worth, I would've probably pay over $50 for this gem.

5 out of 5 stars A good book, despite the title.......2007-04-15

Although the title leaves a little to be desired, and you may want to hide it from friends who think you have a get-rich-quick scheme brewing, this book is actually full of insightful knowledge about special situation investing. These are situations in which the market may misjudge a company's stock price and a smart investor may be able to jump in and take advantage of the temporary mispricing. A few examples include spin-offs, where a company will break off a part of its business as a new company with its own stock, corporate restructuring, merger securities, and companies recovering from bankruptcy. Each chapter covers a different concept and includes a few examples.
The book is written well with lots of humor throughout. A beginner without an adequate background in business may find the topics confusing, but intermediate investors should be able to find some practical knowledge of places to look for mispriced companies. A warning: the ideas do require some homework. Be prepared to read through press releases, financial statements, and other boring pieces that no one else bothers to read to find potential picks. But that's what value investing is about, finding the stocks that no one else bothers to look. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Uncover the Secret Hiding Places of Stock Market Profits.......2007-04-14

I am usually turned away by cute and quirky book titles, and though this rule is usually a good one to follow, this book is another good reason not to always judge a book by its cover. The sub, sub-title is the real heart of the book on how to "uncover the secret hiding places of stock market profits". If I add one of my favorite lines in the book, "you don't have to be a genius, but you do need a basic understanding of financial statements, some common sense, and the patience necessary to gain experience" this quote really sums up the thesis of Mr. Greenblatt. His theme being that I will describe and point the way to some of the hiding places of possible under appreciated value opportunities, but you as the investor must put in the due diligence and a little work on your own.

Though this book was originally published in 1997, Mr. Greenblatt is still at his trade and doing well which bodes well for this book and its teachings. Toss in a little uncertainty, a special situation, your due diligence, and your on your way as you now know the hiding places.

5 out of 5 stars Who are you?.......2007-03-14

There are two types of people; people who save money and people who don't. It is really easy if you don't save money (you will suffer when you are old, but now you are fine). If you save money, you are always thinking about where to invest money. You can either put money in bank (where you are barely beating inflation) or you can put money in stock market.
There are two types of people who do "something" in stock market; people who trade and people who invest. If you believe in investing and not trading, you are perpetually worrying about finding "cheap" stocks (if you are buying "expensive" stocks then you should STOP and start trading instead).

It really doesn't matter which category of people you belong to, you really need to read this book as a starting point for your investment education. Joe gives you some investment scenarios to consider for finding "cheap" stocks, but, more importantly he does that in very "average Joe" friendly way. Really easy read.

Book Description

"George," he said, "I don't know if you'd be interested, but there's a chap who's come in with a tape of a group he runs. They haven't got a recording contract, and I wonder if you'd like to see him and listen to what he's got?""Certainly," I said, "I'm willing to listen to anything. Ask him to come and see me." "O.K., I will. His name's Brian Epstein...."All You Need Is Ears is the story of George Martin, the man who spotted the Beatles' talent, who recorded and produced them from the start, and who brought their musical ideas to life. In this witty and charming autobiography, he describes exactly what it was like to work in the studio with the Beatles--from the first audition (and his decision to scrap Pete Best on drums) to the wild experimentation of Sgt. Pepper (complete with sound effects, animal noises and full orchestras in evening dress at the direct request of Paul McCartney). This is a singular look at the most important musical group of all time, and how they made the music that changed the world: No other book can provide George Martin's inside look at their creative process, at the play of genius and practical improvisation that gave them their sound; it is an indispensable read for Beatle lovers and anyone interested in the music world.

The book is full of insights and is very fun to read.
It also has a lot of good pictures too.
I strongly recommend it.

Just to point out --

The biography posted is for George Martin, the sci-fi writer,
who isn't the same person (as far as I know!) as the Beatles'
producer. FYI.

3 out of 5 stars A good book that should have been great.......2007-03-05

George Martin was the 5th Beatle. He gave them their first break after they had been turned down by all the labels. Without the break he gave them, Martin muses that the Beatles may have just given it up and gone their separate ways. Apparently George Martin was the only one around that was willing to take a chance on these scruffs from Liverpool that would chane the world.

It seems that Paul was the one Beatle that could have made it on his own, but if not as on of The Beatles, then as what? Could he have been a backup for Tony Sheridan, or a bass player for Little Richard? Thankfully, we will never know. Would the other Beatles have likely gotten working class jobs, and/or just self-destructed? As always, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

It is hard to imagine a world without the Beatles, but that just underscores the importance of George Martin in giving them their lucky break. George Martin played all positions with the Beatles, except for vocalist. He produced, directed, arranged, and even played piano and harpsichord on many records. He brought that classical influence of strings and horns into the Beatles music, starting with Yesterday. Any die-hard fan will want to read this book, however, beware: it is diluted a bit with stories about other recording artists that have little relation to the reason why I bought the book in the first place, i.e., The Beatles. Nevertheless, it does have a few anecdotes that have not been seen elsewhere, so yes, it is worth buying and reading. You can always skip the parts that you don't care about.

George Martin is very informative on the evolution of multitrack recording technology, so that should be of interest to anybody that wonders how they got all those "layer cakes" out of the primitive equipment of the day.

I enjoyed the book immensely, but I think George Martin could have done better given his intimate knowledge of one of the greatest cultural phenomena of all time. Sometimes he seems a little aloof in the book, as if he hardly cares, but it is probably just old-school English understatement at its best, or maybe a futile attempt to downplay that he is probably their biggest fan, if not one of their oldest.

On a side note, it is too bad that George Martin was never rewarded financially (at least up to 1979 when this book was published) on a level that would have been commensurate with the important role he played in not only discovering, but also developing the greatest band of all time. As always, the Beatles come off as cheap, uncharitable and self-indulgent on this score. As the book explains, Martin was offered some royalties under the table, (as a kickback from an unscrupulous publisher) but he never compromised his ethics. Eventually I'm sure he made a nice living through his long association with the Fab 4, but not what one might expect, according to the book, at least up to 1979. A lot has happened in the financial world of The Beatles since this book was written, including the huge Vegas production of Love, in which Martin played an integral role along with his son, Giles. It's nice to see a music producer that is more driven by quality and innovation than the lowest common demoniators. I wish we had more like him.

My rating says 3 stars, but that was a mistake. I really gave it a 4.

4 out of 5 stars Beatles.......2007-01-18

A must read for anyone involved in the making of music as it pertains to production and recording. It however exhibits George Martins conservative nature and is someone bias from his perspective. A much superior book is Here,There, and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick. It is the same subject matter but much more detailed and objective.

4 out of 5 stars Okay but not all that I wanted.......2007-01-05

I wish there were more technical specifics in the descriptions of various sessions. Sir George gets you into Abbey Road studio #2 and lets you know about his experiences with various artists.

Book Description

A Code of Jewish Ethics, Volume 1: You Shall Be Holy is the initial volume of the first major code of Jewish ethics to be written in the English language. It is a monumental work on the vital topic of personal character and integrity by one of the premier Jewish scholars and thinkers of our time.

With the stated purpose of restoring ethics to its central role in Judaism, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin offers hundreds of examples from the Torah, the Talmud, rabbinic commentaries, and contemporary stories to illustrate how ethical teachings can affect our daily behavior. The subjects dealt with are ones we all encounter. They include judging other people fairly; knowing when forgiveness is obligatory, optional, or forbidden; balancing humility and self-esteem; avoiding speech that shames others; restraining our impulses of envy, hatred, and revenge; valuing truth but knowing when lying is permitted; understanding why God is the ultimate basis of morality; and appreciating the great benefits of Torah study. Telushkin has arranged the book in the traditional style of Jewish codes, with topical chapters and numbered paragraphs. Statements of law are almost invariably followed by anecdotes illustrating how these principles have been, or can be, practiced in daily life. The book can be read straight through to provide a solid grounding in Jewish values, consulted as a reference when facing ethical dilemmas, or studied in a group.

Vast in scope, this volume distills more than three thousand years of Jewish laws and suggestions on how to improve one’s character and become more honest, decent, and just. It is a landmark work of scholarship that is sure to influence the lives of Jews for generations to come, rich with questions to ponder and discuss, but primarily a book to live by.

5 out of 5 stars Wise advice throughout, for anyone.......2006-10-02

One of the things I find most wonderful about this book is that I can pick it up and read only a page, and have something worth thinking about. It is packed full of good, clear advice and ethical guidance. On first glance there are some ideas that seem obvious, and some that seem impossible. But with further reading and effort the impossible becomes easier to conceive of, and ideas that seemed obvious reveal hidden depths. I am on my second reading of the book, mixed with frequently jumping around in the text, and I'm certain I'll get something new from it with future readings as well.

A particularly lovely touch to this book is that with every piece of advice, there is an explanation, an example, or an anecdote - something to tie the subject in to our every-day lives. For example, the section on common sense and tact quotes the late Jewish humorist Sam Levenson in saying "It's not so hard to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and don't say it." This seems like such a small thing, but this little bit of humor stays in my mind better than any lecture, and is just enough to remind me that I mean to improve. Other such anecdotes show that some of the "impossible" expectations through the book are in fact anything but.

So many "self-help" and "self-improvement" books are easy to skim through, more fluff and cheery stories than content. While many books on living the good life have passed through my hands, no other has lingered quite as well as this one. Every time I open it I am reminded of some aspect of life that I should focus more on, and I expect it will be on my shelf for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for the High Holy Days.......2006-09-25

Like Telushkin's Book of Jewish Values (which overlaps somewhat with this book) this book is not only full of practical ethical suggestions. Here are a few examples:

1. To help yourself give other people the benefit of the doubt, think of rationalizations that might help, just as if you were making excuses for yourself

2. Praying for others when they are sick is a fine thing, but why not go further by praying for those with other problems such as financial or relationship issues?

3. When visiting friend you haven't seen in awhile, say the Shecheyanu prayer to thank God for the privilege;

4. If someone is getting on your nerves, think of ways in which they might be superior to you;

5. Chant "Do not be easily angered" (al tehi noach lekos) to calm yourself down if you feel yourself getting angry.

Although I am not sure yet which (if any) of these ideas I will have the self-discipline to put into practice, this book has already inspired me to do a little beyond what was directly suggested.

Since this time of year is (for Jews) a propitious time for reforming oneself, I think this book is especially useful this time of year.

Concededly, a few of the book's suggestions seemed a bit overly ambitious to me- but my feeling is that if this book inspires me to do just a few small things differently, than it is worth the time I invested in it.

5 out of 5 stars ample encyclopedic mind.......2006-07-03

In a longer review for jbooks.com, I wrote: "Spending time with this first volume is akin to tapping into Rabbi Telushkin's encyclopedic mind. Fortunately, it's both an ample and organized mind, as evidenced by the logical breakdown of chapters, the bulk of which appear in the second part, in which basic virtues and vices are explicated. Everything from civility and forgiveness to anger and hatred are laid bare." You can read the full review at [...]

Book Description

The soul-searching book that inspired Gandhi to embrace the concept of passive resistance, Tolstoy's 1894 polemic outlines a radical, well-reasoned revision of traditional Christian thinking. The revered novelist and political thinker denounces violent revolution, calling upon readers to rely upon their inner divinity for the strength to effect social change.

Download Description

The Christian religion is not a legal system which, being imposed by violence, may transform men's lives. Christianity is a new and higher conception of life. A new conception of life cannot be imposed on men; it can only be freely assimilated. And it can only be freely assimilated in two ways: one spiritual and internal, the other experimental and external.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Christianity.......2007-09-02

Profound and controversial reading dealing with the misunderstanding of Christianity. It's hard to imagine a book like this was written in the 19th century because it reads very contemporary. After reading the first few chapters, it's no wonder the book was forbidden in Russia. Non-resistance to evil by force is a topic hard to practice let alone to be preached. Leo Tolstoy presents a refreshing look at Christianity with a philosophy and a teaching dealing with the individual spirit rather than a collective form. It's a good complement to Wayne Dyer and Eckart Tolle teachings. A great spiritual awakening is taking place in the world and rethinking the role of the Church and religious traditions is part of that awakening. The timing of this book is amazing. This is a "shake the foundations" book. This book will challenge the traditional believer to examine their beliefs about the role of the modern church. A must read for all those who would like clear understanding of basic Christian principles.

5 out of 5 stars The Kingdom of God Is Within You.......2007-09-01

An excellent summary of this book's content is contained in the title itself: _The Kingdom of God Is Within You: Christianity Not as a Mystic Religion but as a New Theory of Life_. A more detailed summary, spanning several pages, is found in Chapter IV, "Christianity Misunderstood by Men of Science." In this chapter, Tolstoy tells us that "Life, according to the Christian religion, is a progress toward the divine perfection. ... The fulfillment of Christ's teaching consists in moving away from self toward God. ... The Christian precepts (the commandment of love is not a precept in the strict sense of the word, but the expression of the very essence of the religion) are the five commandments of the Sermon on the Mount - all negative in character." (These are found in Matthew 5:21-42.)

1. "The ideal is not to desire to do ill to anyone, not to provoke ill will, to love all men. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall in the attainment of this ideal, is the prohibition of evil speaking."

2. "The ideal is perfect chastity, even in thought. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall in the attainment of this ideal, is that of purity of married life, avoidance of debauchery."

3. "The ideal is to take no thought for the future, to live in the present moment. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall, is the prohibition of swearing, of promising anything in the future."

4. "The ideal is never for any purpose to use force. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall is that of returning good for evil, being patient under wrong, giving the cloak also."

5. "The ideal is to love the enemies who hate us. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall, is not to do evil to our enemies, to speak well of them, and to make no difference between them and our neighbors."

These ideals or requirements seem utopian, and many people who consider themselves to be Christians have looked for ways to accommodate them to temporal concerns like the amassing of treasure and the pursuit of personal advantage. Tolstoy professes himself to be shocked by these attempts: for him, these are straightforward, plainly worded rules of conduct that all Christians must follow. He is fully aware of their radical nature, and he embraces the revolutionary implications of Christ's message. He imagines an objection: "Civilization, art, science, culture will disappear!" but answers it by saying that "Only what is false in them will be destroyed: all the truth there was in them will only be stronger and more flourishing." Indeed, Tolstoy thirsts for the day - not far off, he thinks - when an inequitable social order, maintained by violence, will collapse and real Christians will form a more just and egalitarian society.

Tolstoy's interpretation of the "new law" from the Sermon on the Mount is compelling, but he sometimes runs into difficulties when he argues that these radical and otherworldly commandments should become the basis of public policy. For example, he advocates reform of criminals over punishment - a progressive and humane position - but in arguing this point he seems not to recognize that criminals have any motive other than need, or that criminals might be deterred by the threat of punishment. As another example, Tolstoy maintains that violence sanctioned by a state - as in war, or as punishment for a crime - is no different morally than the violence of one man against another. (As support, he cites a pamphlet by a contemporary that is cunningly titled "How Many Men Are Necessary To Change a Crime into a Virtue?) But are there not instances where state violence can acquire some degree of legitimacy from the consent of its citizens to a set of laws adhered to by all, or by what its citizens consider to be just? Are there not instances where state violence can prevent an even greater catastrophe from occurring? In other words, there are some fairly obvious objections to his line of argument that Tolstoy does not address. Still, a balanced assessment would conclude that Tolstoy's deep skepticism of states and state violence was mostly vindicated by subsequent events in Russia and the rest of the world throughout the twentieth century.

I think that readers will be impressed by the vigor and sincerity of Tolstoy's thought and by many other idiosyncratic pleasures contained in this work. (This review is based on the Project Guttenberg version of _The Kingdom of God Is Within You_.)

4 out of 5 stars Relevant Even Now!.......2007-05-26

Christian and non-christian alike, will find this a provocative and contemporary read. Written before Russia's Revolution, Tolstoy smacks us between the eye's a 100 yrs later. While this was one of Gandhi's favorite books, it is required reading for 'believer's'....who are not faint of heart and willing to be challenged. Fundamentalist will be inspired to think furiously and reconsider their so-called Biblical point of view. Like many authors of the Tolstoy era, much of their writing is a bit compulsive and redundant. Consider the repetitious phraseology a matter of emphasis, and observe that Christendom has failed to advance the Sermon On The Mount since Tolstoy and Gandhi originally petitioned us to pay attention to Jesus's simple declarations.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended by MK Gandhi.......2007-02-10

My interest in this volume stemmed from Gandhi's recommendation of this work by Tolstoy. In his book subtitiled "The Story of My Experiments with Truth" Gandhi states that he had been inspired to reread the volume and to work diligently to spread Tolstoy's message of "non-resistance to evil by force", a concept embodied in Gandhi's Satyagraha campaigns in South Africa and India.

I gave the book a three star rating in marked contrast to higher rankings of many reviewers. I would have lowered my rating further except the book may be of value to individuals seeking information on Gandhi's approach. The book should have been an essay of modest length, not the 350 pages of repetitious material by the great novelist. My suggestion, read the final chapter in which Tolstoy discusses power in societies based upon foundations of pervasive hypocrisy, a kernel worth considering.

4 out of 5 stars What I Believe synopsis.......2007-01-10

Tolstoy wrote the book "What I Believe" and it was banned for years, very difficult to find even today, but Amazon has it. This book is about that banned book. This is a good read, but I preferred the real deal, if you can only read one, read What I Believe by Tolstoy.

"Every morning I jump out of bed and step on  a land mine. The land mine is me. After the  explosion, I spend the rest of the day putting the  pieces back together. Now, it's your turn. Jump!"  Zest. Gusto. Curiosity. These are the qualities  every writer must have, as well as a spirit of  adventure. In this exuberant book, the incomparable  Ray Bradbury shares the wisdom, experience, and  excitement of a lifetime of writing. Here are  practical tips on the art of writing from a master of  the craft-everything from finding original ideas to  developing your own voice and style-as well as the  inside story of Bradbury's own remarkable career  as a prolific author of novels, stories, poems,  films, and plays. In it, Bradbury  encourages us to follow the unique path of our instincts  and enthusiasms to the place where our inner genius  dwells, and he shows that success as a writer  depends on how well you know one subject: your own  life.

5 out of 5 stars Joy of writing.......2007-07-20

This book may be more for the word than the Zen practitioner, but it is for anyone wanting affirmation and inspiration for the craft of writing. Herein Bradbury provides us with the techniques and processes he used since the age of 12 to bring life to words; his deep love of writing and incredible memory, pour from each page making the reader almost drunk (on Dandelion Wine.) After reading this book you too will feel like you can and should write anything albeit with patience and practice.

Whether Bradbury realizes it or not, the discipline of writing is akin to the discipline of Zen as seen in consistent practice of that which we want to achieve, be it a novel or enlightenment. He shows us his method of confronting his childhood fears and shadows while also recommending that not thinking is essential to the creative flow of words that becomes a written product and how wonderful to read of his experiencing the sacred muse.

This book seemed like it would make great high school reading material to encourage young people who so need to express themselves, and it made me feel like using an old fashioned typewriter again, his pre-word-processing tool of hand to paper. It is short and easy to read, full of zest for life and of course the thrill of writing!

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Aspiring Writer.......2005-12-15

Written by one of the truly great writers of our time, Ray Bradbury encourages and imparts some solid tips for writing well. Definitely a must for any aspiring writer, Bradbury gives advice on how to come up with marketable story ideas and how to approach writing them. It's like being guided along by a great writer who you would never meet any other way. One of the tips he offers is that quantity leads to quality. So his advice: keep writing. He also tells us that fiction can be more truthful than nonfiction. Then he shows us how to write down meaningful words in our lives that could possibly lead to compelling stories. It's definitely worth your time to spend a few hours with a fiction master. You never know what you may take away from it. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars A gift from a master.......2005-11-17

Zen in the Art of Writing is a collection of essays written over the long career of Ray Bradbury. Each essay is like a little gift to the reader. He teaches us about writing on what we love, and what we hate and to always stay drunk on writing, because it saves us from reality.

Bradbury's single best piece of advice concerns, well, writing. He devotes a chapter on the mechanics of writing, the way he learned it. To become a successful writer according to Bradbury, one must write at least a thousand words a day until the process becomes automatic and the hand is no different from what it writes. It is simply fascinating to delve into the mind of one of the greatest science fiction writers on how the craft is done. This chapter alone is worth buying the book which seems to be quite cheap.

I am using this book as a reference for my research essay on fiction at Oklahoma State. It contains anecdotes and wisdom which will make you want to go out and write about everything you see. I couldn't recommend anything better for a beginning writer.

5 out of 5 stars Guidance from a Genius.......2005-10-13

If ever I came across an author who was a master of both the art of writing AND life, it is Ray Bradbury. This small work summarizes where his inspiration, continuing motivation, and love and excitement of life all stem from. This isn't just a book encouraging and goading beginning and long-time writers alike; Bradbury presents his philosophy for life. The two go hand-in-hand and if you haven't figured that out yet.....read the book. That may be the key you're still seeking as a writer.

The very way you choose to live your life affects all of your goals and dreams alike. Take charge of it all, and your writing achievements are limitless.

If only I had the time to read everything this man has written. If only I could shake his hand and say, as just another admirer, "You've figured it all out; thanks for sharing it with the rest of us."

Book Description

This 3-part course (including workbook and 72-minute audio CD) teaches the male student how to have an erection anytime for as long as wanted.

In a simple and workable format, Dr. Runels draws from his experience as physician (having coached hundreds of men in these techniques) and researcher in endocrinology to teach the reader how to not only improve sex but also improve health.

The method taught represents a synergistic mixture of techniques (Integrative Sex Transmutation) drawn from ancient texts (like the Tao of Sexology), philosophers and scientists (like Thoreau and Leonardo da VInci), as well as from modern endocrinology, nutrition, exercise physiology, herbology, and pharmacology.

The CD offers an introduction to the 15-week course, but also gives the woman a tool to gracefully and without offense encourage the man to study this course.

If you follow the workbook as recommended, here's what you'll learn:

Part I gives you a better understanding of what sex transmutation is and how it's been used by great men of the past. You'll hear from Benjamin Franklin, Henry David Thoreau, and others. You'll hear how these men used sex transmutation to improve health, increase intelligence, and find God. You'll hear from Dr. Freud about how Leonardo da Vinci "transmuted sex energy" into genius and inspiration.

You'll also investigate the male sexual response zones. First, the usual diagram is presented. Then, you'll see an expanded diagram that demonstrates new zones which allow you to enjoy orgasm and stimulation for hours at a time. Here's where you'll be introduced to the concept of "sex surfing" in and around the orgasmic zone.

Most men go through their youth and if they discover sex transmutation at all, it's in the latter years after much of the energy of youth has been spent. This book will help you capture that energy.

Practicing "safe sex," (not the focus of this book) like cooking an egg to prevent salmonella, simply means enjoying sex in a way that prevents the development of infectious disease. Practicing sex transmutation is like eating for health and strength with the proper number of calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates--eating (or having sex) in a way that strengthens the whole organism.

Part 2 of the course describes how to increase sexual desire--how to build the sex energy wave and achieve erection anytime at any age. Here you learn step-by-step how to make your body ever ready to respond.

First, you learn the 2000-year-old technique taught in the Chinese Tao of Sexology: the man's cycle (not the same as refractory period). Next, you learn a basic plan for improving health that specifically increases energy and sexual function and creativity. Eating practices, herbs, and supplements that will supercharge your sex drive are all explained. Not a burden of in-depth science to bore you, just the necessary facts and a workable basic plan that you can use for the rest of your life.

Next, Dr. Runels covers the sex hormones and how to know if your doctor's done an adequate job of measuring yours. Then he explores the prescription drugs (like Viagra, Livitra, and Cialis) and how to get the most result with the least trouble and cost. Next, you get a list of libido killers and a discussion of synergy and sex.

Finally, in part 2, you'll learn practical tips (taken from the writings of the inspired and ingenious of the past) about how to transmute sexual energy into intelligence and inspiration. Here's where you'll hear from Leonardo and from Benjamin Franklin.

Part 3 tells how to ride the wave of sexual desire for as long as you want by having sex and maintaining an erection for as long as you want. This section does more than cure premature ejaculation, it allow you to control ejaculation almost like a light in your house where you can turn it on or off at will.

First, in part 3, Dr. Runels reviews why you would want to have sex for a long time. This review includes an introduction to the nine levels of a woman's orgasm. Most women, when they experience orgasm, really only experience the fourth level. Only by patience, prolonged love making, and a deeper understanding of your partner will you help her to the ninth level of orgasm. Next, you learn how most men teach themselves premature ejaculatation when they practice masturbation and how to use masturbation instead to improve your lovemaking endurance and control.

Finally, you're introduced to the Magic 9 formula for maintaining an erection for as long as you or your mate should desire. While exploring the Magic 9, you can also help your mate explore the nine levels of female orgasm.

After reading the book,I decided to read through it again and take notes which I intend to use for application and further study. Definitely an easy to understand piece of material with valuable information not seen elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book, enhances not only your Sex Drive and Your Awareness, but virtually every area of your life!!!.......2007-09-15

Amazing book, I had some questions about how to better understand the whole process of Sex and Sexual Response so I could better understand my own body and how to use it in the most advantageous way, as well as the smartest way. This book is amazing and accomplishes that and much more. Sexual Desire and Libido is such a present part of a male that it permeates many areas of our lives and even with that influence and power we have at our fingertips, most people are not informed about this powerful force. It is really amazing, and we should all be thankful to Dr. Runels for sharing his valuable expertise on this matter and helping potentially millions of men live better lives. I am a musician and a student and have felt the effects first hand in my studies and in my creativity. This book is not just about sex, it is a vital very necessary component, but this book expands into what amounts to a higher spirituality, more productivity in whatever endeavor you choose, and a guidebook to attaining genius in your own life. It amounts to a super charged quality of life. Get the book, utilize and use the book, and the results and outcomes you will realize, see, and achieve will be higher than you may even imagine to be possible! Get this book and use it, and change your life for the better!

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2007-07-23

I am a 48 year old female and as long as I can remember had been overweight. I also tried many programs and diets without success. When I came to Dr Runels, I remember being in such pain mentally and physically and felt as though I was too tired to do anything.

After talking with him, he gave me a plan and his book. I began reading his book and I couldn't stop until I was finished. (It was just that interesting) As I read and followed his plan, I learned so much from a physical, mental, and spitritual point of view. As time went on, I ate as he told me, took testosterone, growth hormone and armour thyroid (as I was low in all of these) and began to walk three miles a day.

I had never been consistent with exercise until I heard Dr Runels explain it the way he did. It turned a light on for me and I have been consistent ever since.

Now, with a weight loss of over 90 pounds and walking 3 miles a day, I have never felt better in my life. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Runels for changing my life and I thank God for him and the knowlege he shares in his book.

Dr. Runels has changed many lives which I have had the privilege to witness first hand. I now work with him and am blessed to see many people come from a place of pain and hopelessness, to a place in their lives where they are vibrant and alive again. It is so refreshing to see a physician with such passion and compassion use his knoweldge outside the box to change many lives.

This book is real informative about a topic nobody talks about but everyone wants to know. Cool facts and strategies included. I personally enjoyed the section on horomones and male cycles. However, I was looking for a little more magic to assist. In the end it just comes down to will power.

5 out of 5 stars Teach an old dog new tricks.......2005-03-22

Learning, the sheer thought of it,especially with nearing exams made me cringe. It was not school that killed my enthusiasm, it was Medical School.
It was drudgery and a dependable backside that got me through.
Working as a doctor added another complicating factor, that of limited time.
Now after having had two children I seem to have even less!
Because I wanted to consider employment seriously again, I had to take a good look at my learning style.I found it demotivating, time consuming and most of all hopelessly ineffective.
To find new techniques I started looking at the literature again and this book "Quantum Learning" sounded most promising. I was not disappointed.
Practical tipps I needed and I got them. Around the techniques I have started to create a learning style that suits me and the amount of time I have.
At 36,I have finally rediscovered the fun in learning things new.
I even took up skiing last month.
It appears after all, you can teach an old dog new tricks!
I congratulate Bobbi DePorter and Mike Hernacki to writing this book and myself for having the good sense reading it!

This book is a great book on how to improve your way and your child's way to learn. It has great techniques for note taking, knowing your learning style, and other information to help you understand in a way it is easy for you to understand. great book! I recommend this for anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2002-12-14

I purchased this book about three years ago. It made a difference in how I have managed myself and teams I work with. Understanding the different learning styles and taking the time to realize your own potential can come out in other ways made a big difference. An original copy I had was misplaced, but it made such an impression on my mind I purchased another copy recently to share with my coworkers. They found it useful as well.

2 out of 5 stars More of an advertisement for Supercamp!!!.......2002-10-26

Impressed by the promises the author makes, I began reading this book very enthusiastically. But after the first five chapters i became bit skeptical as the author throughout talks about"The Supercamp". This book is more of an advertisement for the Supercamp. The good stuff appears only after the first half of this book and that too is very elementary.

Though the author talks about some advanced techniques, yet she fails to do justice with them.

You may reap some benefits from this book if it's your first one on the learning techniques. It's mainly an introduction to techniques such as mind maps, memory techniques, creativity etc. I read this book after reading the Memory book, power reading(not finished yet) and What smart students know and found that this one stood nowhere against the formers.

The good thing about this book is the way the information has been presented. If you are a student and planning to buy a book on learning techniques,i recommend "What Smart Students Know" by Adam Robinson. For adults....look elsewhere. This ain't gonna bring the genius outof you.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of positional exercises.......2007-05-17

Whether or not you are positional chess genius, you will need a lot of hard work and practice to bring out your talents. This book furnishes 150 chess positions for just that kind of training. The 150 positions are split among ten chapters of 15 positions each; within each chapter there are five problems worth 5 points, five worth 10 points, and five worth 15 points. For each test position, the reader needs to find the correct plan, identify all of the relevant factors leading to the correct decision. If you need a hint, the author provides a separate section of very brief hints (one per position), the use of which is optional, and which incurs a penalty in points each time it is consulted. All of the chapters are roughly of equal difficulty overall, so that the reader can gauge his/her progress throughout the book.

This is really a great collection of positions. I noticed that they cover all sorts of very important topics, such as outposts, weak squares, better minor piece, freeing pawn break, etc., usually in rich combination. Very often, part of the right strategy is to prevent a plan by the opponent. Nothing is absolutely trivial, and the hard problems can be extremely challenging. Accordingly I think this is best suited for players 1600 and up, who have had some previous background in chess strategy (e.g., Silman's HTRYC). Most of the positions are from actual games, in which case we get the actual moves in the solution, along with supporting discussion. In a few cases the positions were thought up by the author, and I found them to be good exercises, too. The solutions are suitably detailed. For full credit, the reader must justify the answer completely - this means looking at all of the critical variations (including tactics, if need be), and evaluating possible outcomes accurately.

My only serious criticism of this book is that every single problem position has a caption below it that sets up the problem itself. This, unfortunately, detracts from the instructive purpose of the exercise since it gives an unrealistic hint about what to look for. In a couple cases, the hint is almost a dead giveaway. Readers should instead cover up all of these captions while studying the diagram, and try to use their normal routine for evaluating the position. For this inconvenience, a deduction of one star. I am not a fan of the hint section, either. I would recommend instead that readers attempt each problem to the absolute best of their abilities without the hint or caption, then make a *firm commitment* to a move, before turning directly to the solution. This is better preparation for real battles at the chessboard.

Overall, these exercises are a notch easier than the ones in Aagaard's "Excelling at Positional Chess," and a half notch harder than the ones in Silman's HTRYC Workbook. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better positional puzzle books.......2007-04-19

There are very few good positional chess puzzle book on the market, but this is definitely one of the better. Unfortunately this book (as many other chess problem books) presents chess problems in all levels of difficulty (I think this is related to market, cost and economy for each chess-publishing house).

In Angus's there are 3 levels of difficulty and chess players who manage to solve chess problems at level 1 (among 1600 in rating), may not at all be able to solve problems at level 3 (2300-2400 in rating). So a player rated around 1700 may only benefit 50% from this book. This book is perhaps an expensive book for a player at this rating level.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!.......2004-09-27

This is without a doubt my favorite chess book! The heart of this book is ten tests of fifteen puzzles each. Each test is divided into 5 easy, 5 intermediate, and 5 difficult problems. This helps you to guage how much effort you should put into each problem.

I find that puzzle books are the most effective, practical, way to improve my playing strength.

The solution to each problem is crisp and clear. After pondering one of his problems, when I finally see the answer, it's like a light-bulb is turned on. "Aha! Yes, clearly that's the best move!" When this happens, I feel I've truly learned something that will stay with me, and benefit me later when I'm actually playing a game.

The book is nicely printed, with large diagrams so that you have the choice to either set up the position on a board, or to solve them directly from the book-- very convenient when travelling or otherwise away from home.

The author has obviously picked the problems very carefully, and scored the possible solutions diligently; so that the learning experience for the reader is greatly enhanced.

After I worked through this book, I felt that my playing strength improved about 100 rating points. I think the level of this book is useful for players in the 1700-2300 range (for reference, I fall into the middle of this range).

I loved this book!! Kudos to Angus Dunnington for a fine work.

Book Description

There are two kinds of math: the hard kind and the easy kind. The easy kind, practiced by ants, shrimp, Welsh Corgis — and us — is innate. But what innate calculating skills do we humans have? Leaving aside built-in mathematics, such as the visual system, ordinary people do just fine when faced with mathematical tasks in the course of the day. Yet when they are confronted with the same tasks presented as “math,” their accuracy often drops. If we have innate mathematical ability, why do we have to teach math and why do most of us find it so hard to learn? Are there tricks or strategies that the ordinary person can do to improve mathematical ability? Can we improve our math skills by learning from dogs, cats, and other creatures that “do math?” The answer to each of these questions is a qualified yes. All these examples of animal math suggest that if we want to do better in the formal kind of math, we should see how it arises from natural mathematics.

From NPR's "Math Guy," The Math Instinct is a real celebration of innate math sense and will provide even the most number-phobic readers with confidence in their own mathematical abilities.

3 out of 5 stars Only Okay........2006-10-27

I thought there would be a little more substance to this book. I was glad to see the stories and references to some of the street math but I was more intrigued by the examples of babies and math.

I would recommend it to friends that are not that interested in math.

For those that want more depth to the discussion relating math to instinct I'd go elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Has its faults, but a lot of interesting material.......2006-09-06

"The Math Instinct" is something of a hodge-podge, and I think it could be written better, but there is lots of really interesting material, and the reader can always skip chapters not of interest to him/her. I say the book isn't written that well, because Devlin doesn't do well enough with the more difficult concepts. I say it is a hodge podge because subjects such as the nautilus's shell have nothing to do with the rest of the book; in fact Devlin waits far too long to distinguish between computational skills of animals, such as their navigational skills, and the results of optimization through evolutionary trial and error (bee's hexagonal honeycomb) which has nothing to do with the animal brain's capacity for doing math.
Amazingly, a numerical sense has been found to exist in baby's only a few days old, as well as in rats, etc. Brazilian children who could not master arithmetic in school, do great when they need to employ math in the marketplace. When math is abstract and rule based, without making sense, it is hard to learn or apply. It actually uses a part of the brain devoted to language rather than a part used for "natural" math (which incidentally grew out of the area used to control digits). Devlin addresses teaching math, but surprisingly doesn't have much too say, emphasizing repetitive practice rather than a change in presentation. For example, for reasons Devlin gives, learning 7 x 8 = 56 is particularly hard, so why not teach 7 x 8 = 7 x 7 + 7, thereby giving the idea of multiplication as a quick way to do some kinds of addition, and taking advantage of the kind of techniques untutored Brazilian working kids use in the marketplace?

4 out of 5 stars Animal Instinct and Human Psychology.......2006-07-27

Although the word "math" appears in the title, this book is mainly about instinct and psychology. About half the book contains discussions on how animals instinctively do certain things that have some foundation in math. The other half of the book looks at how humans perceive and behave in math-related situations - from infancy to adulthood. The book is very well-written, very clear and easy to read. Those who are math phobic have nothing to fear here; in fact, they would likely find this book very interesting in the sense that they would learn something fascinating about themselves. Other than for those who are math phobic, this book has something for psychology buffs as well as animal lovers. But most importantly, it should grace the shelves of math educators as well as those who are interested in the reasons and possible cures for innumeracy.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Accounts of Animal and Street Math.......2006-03-05

This book offers a very readable overview for the non-specialist, with many fascinating details on how animals use their kinds of natural mathematics. It also discusses the findings of Brazilian researchers on how teenage street vendors who can't handle school math develop their own effective street math techniques. The author makes abundantly clear that many people can't deal with school math because it is presented as an abstract symbolic system. People can learn best, he argues, by applying math in concrete ways. Unfortunately, he stops short at the end of the book and simply enjoins us to practice because that is the way humans gain mastery over subjects. It would have been useful for him to spell out how such practice can best be done and to give examples. I recall an awful pre-calculus course that spent a full year trying to prove a set of theorems, leaving us students with no knowledge of how to apply calculus to scientific, financial, or other problems (this was the last exposure to math for most of the class). We would have learned much better by applying calculus to real problems, then perhaps concluding the year with a bit of theory. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy popular science literature or want to know more about animal math.

2 out of 5 stars The Math inSTINKS.......2005-08-21

I was suckered by the description and this book fails to deliver....

The reason I gave two stars: some teenagers or true novices to the subject may find some of the stories interesting enough to turn them onto better works in the field.

There is NOTHING new in this book: Devlin desperately looks for a new angle to a Greek philosophical fight- which is not necessarily bad (see "the Anthropology of Art") BUT he doesn't take any new angle- he just searches and speculates - like a tired dog circling for a place to lie down.

The filler of the book is what anyone would expect- scientific research and 'interesting' tidbits about the physical world... once again, nothing new. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Financial Genius awakes!.......2004-08-03

I bought this book 25 years ago when I was a senior in high school. Being from a blue collar family, I had never heard of investment ideas like this before. The book completely changed my life. Rather than become a mechanic like I had planned, as soon as I graduated from High school I started buying rental property. At this point I have acumulated an equity of over 2 million dollars, in addition to enjoying a high standard of living.
Of course I ended up learning a lot more along the way than what was in this book, but Financial Genius is an excellent starting point. The basic financial princilples laid out in the book have been a great benefit. Marks ability to explain and to motivate are excellent.
I highly reccomend this book!

1 out of 5 stars WORTHLESS OUTDATED JUNK.......2002-06-14

This is the worst piece of garbage I have ever read. It is outdated, useless when it was new, and overall a waste of time and money. I feel sorry for the trees that were used to make the paper for this book. THIS RATES A BIG ZERO.

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up the Financial Genius within YOU.......2002-04-21

This was the first real estate book I ever bought. The example of a penny a day doubled every day or a $1,000 a day for 30 days I thought, at the time was far fetched and corny.Using MARKS techniques, I went from 0 credit to over a $100,000 in credit and 0 net worth to $500,000 in under two years time (in 1970's $$$)The techniques still work today. I also recommend The Courage To Be Rich, the one by Mark not Suze Orman. The fact that Suze Orman would copy a title from Mark's Book should tell you the impact that Mr. Haroldsen hadon the fincially savvy.

5 out of 5 stars Tell Yourself that You are a Financial Genius.......2002-03-21

Whatever you believe that you are, you do what that represents, which manifests its self in the physical reality.

This is also true for money management. Each time that I read this book, I have a light bulb moment. And I know that I am in the process of becoming financially savvy. I also realize, as I read this book, along with Glinda Bridgforth's, "Girl, Get Your Money Straight," that I am giving myself the financial intelligence that I lost as a child.

This book is simple, enlightening, and helpful in making my money work harder than I work.

I find myself saying to myself, as I read this book, "Okay. Yep! I can do that. And now I understand more about how the rich think."

Find and read this book to give yourself financial peace of mind.

5 out of 5 stars The start of my enlightenment.......2002-01-18

I bought / read this book in 1976 and still have it .... I've made some very profitable real estate investments since then .... and just part-time. This book is a very inexpensive way to learn and DO the basics of what making money in real estate is all about. VERY down to earth and easy reading .... it changed my life. These principles still work today and probably always will.
