The critics of this book/CD are a little over the top in my opinion. My 8-year-old daughter has enjoyed this book and has gotten a good start on guitar. I'm a guitarist and guitar teacher, so I'm familiar with similar books for this age range. Most are pretty much the same. I like the mix of original rock-oriented tunes and traditionals, which is a little different than some. The combination of single-string melody and strumming is handled well. The girl-oriented graphics are more interesting and colorful than what is offered in traditional method books, and if that helps even a little getting a young girl interested (and past that early phase where it hurts your fingers, whether you're a boy or a girl!), I say more power to it.

3 out of 5 stars The graphics make it for specifically for girls but content is gender neutral .......2006-10-24

I'm glad there is a book out there written for the female guitar student. I've noticed over decades of teaching guitar, male teachers connect better with male students and females teachers connect better with female students. Most, if not all, of the guitar instruction books since the day of Mel Bay in the 1940s, have been written by males, for males. Just check out the lyrics to Mel Bay method books out and you'll see what I mean. They're written from the perspective of the male. So to see books like this one is a nice change.

The graphics are what give it a nice pleasant feminine touch. Most guitar instruction books only contain photos of men but here we give credit to the females who love playing guitar as much as the boys do. It's the generic content that brings down the overall rating. To truely be an original book written for females, the author would need to come up with a method that was different from previous Alfred Guitar Course material in their other method books. Basically this is just a cleaver repacking, putting in cute graphics and guitar TAB.

A great book for girls is Susan Mazer's Guitar For The Absolute Beginner by NGW and Alfred Publishing. Susan has a very calm and pleasant demeanor (she's also on the DVD, which I recommend for self study). The material is fun and the music tracks are fun to play guitar to. Susan's book has more of an emphasis on chordal playing and not so much on note reading, which will please those that want guitar lessons to be entertaining instead of regimented. The enhanced CD is a nice feature but, much to my dismay, none of the Alfred enhanced CDs run on Mac OSX (As far as I can tell).

2 out of 5 stars A Woman's Perspective.......2006-07-23

Another reviewer had concerns that he would appear chauvinistic for saying the book was a regular guitar book with girly designs. I have to say he's not being a jerk. I picked up the book wondering what unique insight it had for female guitar players and was a little put off to find that they drew hearts and flowers all over the pages and then called it a girl's method. It's insulting.

2 out of 5 stars Deceiving title. No different than any other modern guitar book........2003-09-16

The far, far majority of rock musicians have always been male. I honestly have no idea why, but that's the hard truth. As a result, few companies ever bothered to market something specifically for female musicians. However, by the mid-1990s a significant number of guitar-driven bands with one or more female musicians had made waves on the scene (White Zombie, The Breeders, Veruca Salt, Smashing Pumpkins, Jewel, Hole, Cheryl Crow, etc.). And today, a higher percentage of women can be seen in the local music scenes and even in working in musical instrument stores.

Tish Ciravolo took advantage of this new target audience and created Daisy Rock: a line of guitars and basses created for female musicians. Not only are they made to look more "girly", but since women are physically different than men, the guitars also have a different contour in the body and the length is scaled smaller. It was a smart move on Ciravolo's part, and one that was long overdue. For women who want to start playing guitar or bass, I highly recommend checking these out.

It was all because of Daisy Rock's success that Ciravolo was approached to write a guitar book. Hence, "Girl's Guitar Method". It's a guitar book/CD for beginners with some flowery graphics and...well, unfortunately that's about it.

In and of itself, the book is a decent guitar lesson book. It includes what you normally find in other guitar books: tablature readings, instructions on how to tune, construction of chords, a chord dictionary, and modern examples ("alternative music" and the like) to listen and play to, structured into lessons that start at the most basic level and get increasingly advanced. But strip away the curvy fonts and other girly doodles, and you're left with a book that's really no different from the numerous other guitar books on the market today. To me, that makes the title rather deceiving, especially to those just starting on the instrument.

In all fairness, I don't see how one COULD write guitar lessons for women specifically. It would be like trying to write a book called "Men's Crochet Method", by taking a random crochet book and putting Freddy Kreuger's sweater on the front cover, maybe an irrelevant centerfold inserted too. Same book, just repackaged in order to market it to a new audience. Unfortunately, "Girl's Guitar Method" is no different. I'm sure some will blindly assume I'm a chauvinist and mark this review as "not helpful" just out of spite, but for those who value your playing more than fancy marketing, you may first want to check out some of the much more informative (and cheaper) guitar books out there.

Sex, drugs, and rock & roll... a common high-school fantasy, right? In British author Sarra Manning's debut novel Guitar Girl, this oft-trumpeted triple-temptation proves to be terribly trying for a budding pop star. Molly Montgomery and her friends Tara and Jane live largely unnoticed until they form a fledgling girl band that will "be part of the new girl revolution." Fragile-yet-feisty Molly writes songs about Hello Kitty and boy crushes because that's the stuff of her world--a childhood closely guarded by her "crunchy granola," rule-oriented parents she dramatically deems "power-crazed fascists." But when her band is joined by a couple of older boys and attracts the attention of a fancy manager, "The Hormones" start racing--big gigs, an American tour, the whole bit. During her wild ride to stardom, Molly gets her first kisses from both a boy and a girl, gets drunk for the first time (but not the last), and loses her virginity and her sense of self, too. Any teenager who romanticizes celebrity will get a good dose of the reality of drug overdoses, morning-after pills, legal battles, exploitation, humiliation, and exhaustion with Guitar Girl...still, Manning manages to communicate the rush of wowing an audience and the joy and power of music through the often bittersweet, often bitingly funny voice of Molly. For a variation on the same theme, investigate Rachel Cohn's Pop Princess. (Ages 13 and older) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

Seventeen-year-old Molly Montgomery never planned on becoming famous. Molly's band, The Hormones, was just supposed to be about mucking around with her best mates, Jane and Tara, and having fun. But when the deliciously dangerous Dean and his friend T join the band, things start happening fast. Soon The Hormones are front-page news, and their debut album is rocketing up the charts. Molly is the force behind the band, but the hazards of fame, first love, screaming fans, and sleazy managers are forcing the newly crowned teen queen of grrl angst close to the edge. Fame never comes for free, and Molly's about to find out what it costs.

    Guitar Girl by Sarra Manning
©2003 - Published by Speak - An Imprint of Penguin Group (USA) Inc.

"So I put my arms round her and wished that I could gather her up
and take her to a place where we were both anywhere but where we were."

Sarra Manning's 2003 debut novel is set in England and told through the voice of its main character, Molly Montgomery. The story line unravels and follows a rock n' roll journey through an industry that can seem glamorous and unattainable to many. Molly and the Hormones were the lucky ones - sort of.

This book was awesome! It was an emotional read with all of the great elements of writing - settings, conflicts, protagonists, antagonists, climaxes, and an ending that was revealed in the prologue, but hit me like a hot white revelation in the epilogue. I will read this book again! I want to buy a paperback copy so that I can scribble notes to the characters in the margins. I want to buy a hardback copy so that I can sit it on my desk as a reminder that life can often give us what we want - but it may not be what we expect. Wants can often be heartbreaking and always seem to come with a few bumps and bruises.

I'm very good when it comes to reading the last pages and paragraphs of books or stories - I don't do it. I like to read from beginning to the end. This book's prologue gave a quick glimpse of what the ending would be, but then the first chapter began a flashback of events that lead to the conclusion.

Molly Montgomery is 17 when she learns to play guitar and write songs about Hello Kitty. Her inspiration is Ruby X, a musician and lyricist, who Molly identifies with as starting a revolution for girls who love to rock. Molly starts her own band, the Hormones, with her friends Jane and Tara. Life for these three high school misfits takes a sudden turn when they meet up with Dean and "T" and are discovered by business savvy and smooth talking manager, Paul.

Molly's heart is about changing the world through music; Paul's heart is about boosting his bank account. Molly's band mates fit into the glitter, glory and gore of making the rapid climb to being stars. However, for Molly, the climb for the Hormones is rocky and rough and she often stands on the sideline and watches as her own hormones rage. Molly eventually makes a decision - but I won't tell you what it is.

4 out of 5 stars Stupid cover, good book.......2007-05-26

Guitar Girl, written by Sarra Manning is a gripping book about three teenage girls, Molly, Jane, and Tara, who start a band to be part of the `girl revolution.' It offers a rollercoaster of emotions, as the suspense rises and falls all throughout the book.

Molly gets the idea to start the band and the others love it! They meet a guy named Dean at one of their gigs who says he and a friend could help the band. They sure did, and they joined the band too! At the first gig they all did together they meet Paul, who wants to be their manager. They have many struggles when they tour together especially with Dean's new girlfriend, Sandrine.

They all seem to lose their sprits when they go to America on tour. Jane starts having problems with drugs and alcohol, Tara begins to act really mean, and Dean and Molly have a very discomforting kiss.

When Paul discovers all this is going on, he starts to tell every band member the same thing, "that they are the most important person," and that sparks huge controversy within the band.

Sarra Manning is a teen queen. She is the editor of many huge teen magazines including Seventeen. She has written five books, and is working on her sixth. She lives in London with her dog.

I thought the book was really engaging. The characters were easy to get attached to. I recommend the book to anyone who has tried to start a band or dreamt of starting a band. Its great for teen girls. I wouldn't recommend it if you like books with perfect endings. This book leaves you with unwanted emotions, and lingering questions.

    5 out of 5 stars Rock On!!.......2007-03-07

I first saw this book reviewed by Teen People and I thought it looked interesting and then I had a chance and I bought it. I am glad I did. It was a good story. Sarra Manning is one of my favorite authors.

    4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2006-06-09

This novel does what it says it will: it gives you a not-so-glamorous look into the rough world of rock and roll and fame at a young age.

The reason this book works is that it is completely honest. The characters are utterly flawed at times but still manage to have their moments. Take Molly for example. She talks tough until she is confronted with a situation that upsets her. then she pouts and complains and does things she instantly regrets. Her struggle with her parents about what career is right for her is spot on and her love/hate relationship with Dean rings truer than many relationships I've read in books before: sometimes the people you love the most cause you the most pain. And the situation with Ruby X was bittersweet in a heartwarming way, if that makes any sense.

One problem that the book is that Molly has very little closure with people. Like with Tara, she just lets her problem drag on until she makes a huge decision that destroys their friendship but they never really talk about it. Also, Dean is one of those characters who isn't horrible but you don't want to like either. So, readers are left conflicted about how they feel about him.

Otherwise, the book was very good. Molly's songs appeal to the audience (or at least to me) because they're the kind of songs we would write insted of goopy love songs that have no revelance to our lives. It is hard to describe why this book is good but be content with the fact that is good and definitely worth the read. I only hope that my review helped and didn't give too much away.

3 out of 5 stars it was good but not great.......2006-06-05

When molly starts the whole band her intentions were good I guess a bit childish. Molly is only 17 and yet she acts younger then I do, well that's my opinion. Her friends don't help. Along their journey to stardom they pick up some new band members. One named T whom every one thinks cant talk. And Dean who has to be in charge of everything and wants to be the star. Yet he likes molly. Tara and Jane are her best friends whom she started the band. With Tara has a thing for T. but also has a thing for molly. Jane gets caught up in the party life style and does drugs and gets drunk. One night she takes too much and has to go to the hospital and then molly makes a decision. Which I am not going to tell u. but I will say her and dean fall in love but he is evil and betrays her. Molly's manager got her drunk and made her sign a contract.therefor she is being sued. at times this book got boring going on and on.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro to guitar for women, girls and anyone else.......2005-12-11

This book includes the same DVD as "Guitar for Girls" (ASIN: B00027ET8A) elsewhere on amazon. This is a better buy because you get a larger format, nicely laid out book as well as the DVD for less. My review is the same as I wrote under the product page for that DVD, with the addition of the text which I think greatly helps the learning process:

I think this is a great DVD for beginners. She knows her way around the guitar, and has a nice singing voice. At the risk of sounding essentialist, sometimes it makes a real difference to see a *woman* playing and teaching. There are so many wonderful instructional DVDs with men but Alex might make it just that much more accessible to a young girl starting out; she is a very positive music role model in my opinion. However - the lessons DO move very fast, especially the scale (I am not sure that was a necessary inclusion) and the fingerpicking sessions. She shows the chords, then plays along with pretty quick changes between chords. Someone starting out should understand that they will *not* be able to do everything the first time, and to stop and rewind until they get the chord changes right.

The DVD also has a section on stringing and caring for a guitar in the special features.

5 out of 5 stars Great for young readers!.......2007-01-11

The Star Sisterz series has been the redemption of my daughter's reading habits. She refused to read for a long time until I gave her the first book Nova Rocks. She devoured the entire series in just under two weeks. This is nothing short of a miracle for the girl that hates to read. I've read the books too and found them to be filled with fun humor, interesting characters, and a nice little surprise at the end. Definately worth five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous New Series for Middle Readers.......2005-04-20

Fourteen-year-old Nova Darling can't seem to get out of a huge rut. Her mother is forcing her to stick with ballet, even though she wants nothing more than to rock out on her hidden guitar, Roxie; her older sister, Venus, is a certifiable genius, and now Nova's going crazy. I mean, she has to be. After all, it's not everyday that someone claims to have seen a secret message pop-up on the screen of the ATM machine, like Nova did. Her message? "Act like a rock star in front of a group of strangers." How would the ATM machine know that she loved the guitar, and that she truly wanted to be a rock star? Now, in between her daily duties as a library volunteer, ballet prima donna, and Joe Tsai gazer, Nova has to also play the part of detective to figure out what is truly going on.

From the very first page of NOVA ROCKS! I knew that STAR SISTERZ was bound to be a popular new series for middle readers. Nova is a fabulous character, who has the snottiness of a 14-year-old, accompanied by the need to be cool, and normal feelings of not being accepted. Her lingo is hip, and will draw readers in by the hundreds. Overall, this is a wonderful new book that will leave readers grappling for the next release in the series CARMEN DIVES IN.

Star Sisterz has much to recommend it not only for girls, but for adults trying to understand the feelings and travails of the average teenager. It is well written and captures their insecure world with both humor and colorful examples of teenage angst. It shows true insight on the part of the author. I heartily recommend for both moms and daughters.

This book contains all the guitar chords, guitar tabulature and piano notes for all the songs. The talent of the Amy and Emily duo never ceases to amaze me. They continue to develop new ways to be creative, adding new instruments and sounds to their works. And, as usual, the words to the songs contain strong messages about social and political issues.
