Wonderful Textbook or Addition to Personal Library.......2007-04-09
I purchased this book for my Literature class. Unfortunately we did not get to read all of the works. I have fallen in love with this book and I hope to keep it for many many years. Some of the works can be boring but if you keep an open mind and concentrate on the ideas, language, and meaning you will understand even the most boring of works.
An absolutely delicious anthology..........2006-02-18
I purchased this book for a class, but was delighted to discover that I will definitely want to hang onto it afterwards. The translations chosen for the 'Ancient World' portion are, for the most part, delightfully vivid and capture the spirit of the original language. I also like the layout - the margin size is just perfect for taking notes.

The Dream Giver.......2007-09-23
I highly recommend this book and plan to purchase copies for future gifts. It is very inspirational and leads to productive self reflection.
Seeking Divine Direction? Get This Book!.......2007-09-19
If you're at a place in your life where you're questioning whether you're on the right path..or if you should be further than you are..or if you suspect you aren't all that you should be - this is a great book for you! This little charmer fell into my life when I was at a crossroads (well, ok, a mid-life crisis). I was desperately seeking God's direction, and was listening so hard I missed all the signs. It's not about achieving the dream(s) you've been after, it's about achieving the dreams God has planned for you - which of course, are far greater than we can ever imagine for ourselves. Don't waste another day...get it!
A Must Read for all - it will change your life.......2007-08-26
I first read this book in Jan 2004 and from that day on I have always rated it as the one book I would recommend for anyone to read - because it will change their life. Last year -Dec 2006 I walked into a bookshop and bought all the copies they had and gave them away to my friends as a Christmas gift. I also told them that this is the best gift I could ever give them and I know that as soon as they begin reading this book they will start listing down the names of all their friends and relatives who they will want to recommend this book too. And sure enough this is exactly what happened. I retained an extra copy for myself which I proceeded to share with people and the same thing happened. As a Toastmaster I was required to do a persuasive speech, and I chose to persuade people to read "The Dream Giver", at the end of the speech people were curiouis as to whether I was getting paid royalties for recommending it, and I told them no - this book so impacted my life that I would wish anyone I know to read this book so that they too can rekindle their dream and pursue it! Again several of those listening to me purchased the book and they agreed entirely with what I had said. I recommend this book to people of all ages - it is never too late to realize & pursue your dream! If I had the means to do it I would ensure that every family in the world had a copy of this book - it's truly an inspirational book to read!
At least it was better than "The Prayer of Jabez...".......2007-07-22
Like many people, I became familiar with Bruce Wilkinson after the publication of his "The Prayer of Jabez." Quite frankly, I was very unimpressed and unaffected by that little book and rather annoyed with the Jabez hysteria that ensued. Since that time, I've read some other stuff from Wilkinson, particularly related to holiness and found it to be more helpful. So, I purchased this unabridged, audiocassette version of "The Dream Giver" with hesitant optimism.
As is becoming increasingly popular (Andy Stanley, Patrick Lencioni, etc.), Wilkinson begins the book with a lengthy parable about a man named Ordinary from the land of Familiar who is given a Big Dream from the Dream Giver. He goes into great detail to describe how Ordinary has to leave Familiar, overcome his Giants, pursue his Big Dream, and so on. Quite honestly, the parable was quite engaging, and I really enjoyed that first half of the book.
For the second half, Wilkinson then takes his parable and fleshes out the principles in direct fashion. This is where the book began to drag for me. In fact, the problem with the second half is connected with the quality of the first half. I felt like I already understood the principles after hearing the parable, so the second half seemed redundant.
One surprise bonus was the great job that Wilkinson did in reading the book for the audiocassette. He was absolutely fantastic, especially during the parable when he was providing voices for characters. If his ministry completely disintegrates, Wilkinson could have a second career reading audiobooks.
Overall, I thought that the book was fine but unremarkable. It was definitely a notch or two beyond the standard "pursue your dreams, you can do anything that you put your mind to" psychobabble so prevalent in today's culture and church. There was some depth to this book. But I was left with the impression that the book wasn't nearly so significant as Wilkinson thought that it was. I can't say that I heard anything new, just some old ideas freshly reformatted. I was also wondering if Wilkinson would write this same book in 2007, now that his dream for Africa has largely deteriorated.
In any case, I think that this book is worth something and would be happy to recommend it to folks who want a jolt of energy and passion to pursue big dreams that God has laid on their hearts.
A life changing book.......2007-07-21
I have bought 30 copies of this book to give to people God tell me to bless. This book has changed my life. Next to the bible, this book needs to be taught in churches especially to the young people. Our future needs the benefit of knowing the obstacles they will face but they will overcome if they faint not. Thank you Mr. Wilkinson for this great piece of work!

A Must Have for EAs.......2007-09-12
I have been an Executive Assistant for 13 years and I found so much great advice in this book. I think this is a must have for anyone who has made a career out of being an assistant. I keep this book at work and refer to it all the time now. Money well spent!
Great Book on Organizing those Details Details Details, Interesting Personalities at Play.......2007-09-10
I'm not a organizational assistant, but I have to say this book has great techniques for everyone. Though, to be frank, this book got me more interested in the author's tellings of her interactions with a highly influential power broker (George Stephanopholous) than how to effectively organize time and resources.
Covers It All.......2007-08-15
This is a great book for both those starting out in the assistant field as well as those looking to become more proficient in their current positions.
It covers all the topics with good, solid advice. Some of the topics covered are phone work, dealing with paper, types of communication, how to conduct yourself and many more. It even goes over when it's time to 'move on' and how to tell your boss you are leaving.
A very thorough book that I would recommend for anyone interested in this type of work.
Be a Kickass Assistant: How to Get from a Grunt Job to a Great Career.......2007-01-09
Wow! Wow! Wow! This is the best book I've read about how an assistant can grow and not be just a ordinary assistant. I feel that it's a step by step handbook to becoming the greatest assistant anybody has had. I've learned LOTS from this book and sharing all this information with my colleagues. The way we should be well informed before communicating something to third parties, and also what we can and can't say. We are very sure that are school will have the best assistants around. Congratulations Heather Beckel
Thank you, Heather!.......2006-11-01
Before getting a job as an assistant at an International Organization, I had almost no idea what an assistant was supposed to do. I remember telling myself "I wish I had a guide for this!"
Well, Heather Beckel's book was the guide I needed! I am very indebted to her because her advice helped me during every step of the process, from my very first days at the desk to negotiating a raise.
This book helped me know what to expect, how to organize myself, what to be aware of, and how to read my boss.
For me, this was a very useful read and I recommend it for anyone who, like me, had little idea of what being a good assistant involved.

Book Description
A year ago, archaeologist Leslie MacIntyre barely survived the explosion that took the life of her fiancé, Matt Connolly. In this place restless spirits hold the secrets not only of past injustice but of a very real and very contemporary conspiracy with deadly designs on the city's womenincluding Leslie herself.
By night Matt visits her in dreams, warning her and offering clues to the truth, while by day she finds herself helped byand attracted to his flesh-and-blood cousin Joe. Torn by her feelings for both men, caught between the worlds of the living and the dead, Leslie struggles against the encroaching danger that threatens to overcome her. I didn't know whether to cry because I was happy or sad! ( I'm a spoiler!).......2007-07-20
Leslie, Matt, and Joe! Ahh! WHY? WHY? WHY? Ok did I say why enough? I just don't get it. Why bring Joe into the story if its going to end this way. Joe already lost so much for the story to end this way. I know bringing Genevieve in at the end is supose to vendicate what happened but I read this story because I thought that the hero and heroine concures all evil and live happily ever after, not heroine dies and goes off into the sunset with dead fiance, leaving behind someone that who could have been something in your life. I just did not know how to feel about the story as a whole when I got to the ending. I think that if I knew more about Matt, I would not have felt cheated. I think if Matt were more of a main character, and not just the ghost boyfriend protecting the heroine, I would have understood why the author went down this path. Also, I probably would have been all for love to concure all and Matt and Leslie ending up together as true love should. But from the beginning Leslie seems to be moving on, and moving in the direction of Joe. This is why it should not have ended the way it did. Joe could have been the "Ghost Whisperer" and the story could have been about him finding the killer and not about leading you to believe this was a story of Leslie and Joe. Sorry Im rambling! I just feel cheated somehow. I know I probably sound like a hater, but I do love Heather Graham.
Great read with a twist ending..........2007-07-20
Even with the twist at the end I loved this book. After reading it, I have to say that yes I was a little disappointed with the ending. However, we readers have come to expect the "typical" happy ending and have a hard time with any other type of happy ending. Those of you who hated the end need to really look at the relationships between all of the characters and know that there are many potential happy endings to this book. I would still recommend this book to anyone.
Outstanding!.......2007-07-10
Okay let me start off by saying that anything Heather Graham, aka Shannon Drake, writes in the paranormal field I love. She is one of two writers that brought me back to reading after almost a 6 year absence, the other being Maggie Shayne.
Now I must admit I read the reviews before I purchased this book so I knew ahead of time that the ending was questionable. All I can say is thats the reason I stopped reading for several years, still rarely read basic romance books, was because they were all the same..ie..man meets woman, they fall in love, conquer one or two obstacles and then get married and have kids..end of story. I got to the point were my imagination was actually TRYING to make me go places that the books werent taking me..One word..BORING! Then I started reading books by Heather Graham. I absolutly love an author who is willing to take a risk and write an ORIGINAL story! For me this was a 2 day read and only 2 days because I had to work, otherwise it would have been a one day read.
I won't rehash the story line because that has been done so many times allready..hopefully often enough so that perspective readers realize the original plot is well worth the chance that they will like it.
I absolutely loved it and honestly thought it ended the way it should. One more great book by Heather Graham. Happy Reading!!
Great story.......2007-07-05
A well written, smooth flowing book. Loved the story, and it had an excellent ending that made me want to get more of Graham's books.
i hated this book.......2007-06-17
Everyone is right who has written a review before myself. The ending of this book............ what can i say awful.......... i hated it. I have read everything heather graham has written. I get most of my books from the library. (thank goodness in this case). I waited a long time for this book to arrive. What a dissapointment!! i have to wonder if all the people who read this book before me was equally as disapointed.

Book Description
IBS is one of our nation's most untalked-about ailments, but millions of people - mostly women - suffer from the debilitating condition, one that must be controlled primarily through diet. Contrary to what may sufferers believe, eating for IBS does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or an unhealthily limited diet. It does mean cutting out such trigger foods as red meat, dairy, most fats, caffeine, alcohol, and insoluble fiber. Heather Van Vorous, who has suffered from IBS since age 9 and gradually learned how to control her IBS symptoms through dietary modifications, collects here 175 recipes she has created over 20 years. IBS sufferers will be thrilled to discover that they can enjoy traditional homestyle cooking, ethnic foods, rich desserts, snacks, and party foods - and don't have to cook weird or special meals for themselves while their families follow a "normal" diet. Eating with IBS will forever revolutionize the way people with IBS eat - and live.

A Wonderful Book --Delicious Recipes!!!.......2007-10-07
Thank You Heather from the bottom of my heart!! I have suffered for 50 years not knowing what was wrong with me. Now thanks to Heather, her wonderful cookbook and her website (helpforibs.com)I know I am not alone and I am feeling better everyday plus I have lost 30lbs without even trying. If only the Medical Community would wake up and listen to their patients so many would not have to suffer anymore!
Good guide, but the recipes are too time consuming.......2007-09-25
I bought this book after reading the guidelines on the author's website. I'm a college student who was just recently diagnosed, so I was looking for recipes I could make for my new lifestyle. From what I tried, and from reading through the rest of the recipes, it's all very time consuming. Her suggestions aren't very practical for the average American.
For example, I made Will's Lemony Rice Pudding... it took me a few hours to make, and required my constant attention. She suggests to make a double batch to eat through out the entire week, and hyped the recipe up to being this delicious pudding. I found it bland, couldn't even figure out how to improve it, and I didn't even eat it all.
If you're looking for a diet to relieve your ibs symptoms, just follow what's on her site. Don't bother to buy the book, there's plenty of pre-existing recipes that already follow the guidelines, or ones you can change slightly. Just get the basics down, and you're good to go.
If anything, request the book from your local library system for the more detailed guidelines and a few recipes.
Delicious!.......2007-08-09
I discovered this cookbook at a group meeting for IBS sufferers. The leader had checked it out of the local library and brought it to show along with other books and materials so we could learn to manage our health better. I actually have Crohn's disease, not IBS, but the symptoms are very similar. I checked this out of the library, tried some of the recipes, and after I had to return the book, bought my own. I keep trying new recipes from this book and my husband and I are loving them. So far, every recipe but one we have loved and now has been a regular on our plates. (The one we didn't care for was the smoky squash soup with either butternut or pumpkin or something like that.) The gingerbread is fabulous and I love the garlic skillet potatoes. I can tolerate dairy, so I often use 2% milk instead of the soy, but these recipes are really delicious. This purchase was for my sister-in-law who has recently been diagnosed with IBS.
Very Helpful.......2007-07-09
I found this book to be helpful to me. It made me feel as if I'm not alone in this battle against IBS. It also helped me to understand that doctors do not have all the answers. I've had IBS for over 20 years - and it changes all the time. Some things I can only eat every once in awhile, others not more than two times in a row. I still make mistakes on my eating habits - it is a changing process and it can be depressing. I try and eat only those things that agree with me and my bowels. :)
Fight IBS.......2007-04-01
If you battle IBS, then this book will change your life with its understandable information and appealing recipes.

Perfect for beginners.......2007-10-11
I did a lot of searching for a good jewelry making book for beginners. After reading many reviews and flipping through dozens of varieties at book stores, I chose this one. It's easy to read. It's divided into sections based on what you are looking for, and it has everything from basic tools to running a business. I have learned a great deal from this book, and am constantly using it for a quick reference. The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is because I think it should have a color picture for EVERY finished project in the book. There is a section of color pictures in the middle that shows some of the projects, but not all of them. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in jewelry making.
Jewelry making and Beading for Dummies.......2007-08-04
I checked out 50 jewelry making books from the library and this is one of only three that I decided I wanted to purchase for my personal book collection. It covers a huge amount of information in detail as well as giving good outside sources to go to for further instruction. This book has been a great resource for me and I highly recommend it for both beginers and more experienced jewelry makers.
Helpful, Hopeful, Happy.......2007-08-03
I have used this book so many times I actually have post-it flags on many of the pages. Whenever in doubt, I pull this book out. It has been most helpful in starting my beading experience and still find it most useful.

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Detailed.......2007-09-12
Pleasant surprise! I was expecting a simplistic high level view of the restaurant business. Instead, this book proved to be incredibly thorough and detailed. It provides a step by step guideline necessary for planning before establishing your own restaurant. It covers everything from calculating costs, profit margins to necessary licenses. It forces you to think of so many details that you never realized you had to account for.
muy util e ilustrativo.......2007-07-19
si te quieres dar una buena idea de como funciona un restaurant antes de comenzar, y cometer muchos errores, lee este libro.
Provided Just The Answers I Wanted.......2007-01-22
It looks like it would really be fun to own a restaurant. You get to meet a lot of interesting people, the work can't be that hard, it looks pretty profitable.
Then I got this book. Reading the For Dummies Cheat Sheet at the beginning I see a few points required for the successful restaurateur:
Ability to hold (or hold off) liquor - Yup! One of my favorite restaurants was owned by a fellow that spent his time on the wrong side of the bar with a never empty drink in front of him. The restaurant failed.
Presence - Yup! Most of the restaurants I go to have the owner there whenever I come by (or else he's running an errand and will be right back); and this is in the morning or late at night.
Then there's location, competition, employees, taxes, health, fire and gosh knows what other inspections.
I read the book. Honestly, I read the whole thing. I made a clear decision, I'm NOT opening a restaurant. The real deciding factor was the last chapter - 'Ten (Or So) True Restaurante Stories That You Just Couldn't Make Up.' I'm going to stay on the customer side of the bar and just watch the antics of the owner.
The best book out there........2006-10-06
I have over 28 years in the restaurant business and I am finally preparing to open my own restaurant and this book has become my personal bible. The authors really know what they are talking about and they give you all the tools to help you open a successful business. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Ha! This Book Exists!.......2006-02-19
This is a good book!
I've always wanted to open a restaurant and within the last year my life has changed to the point where I could make that dream a reality. I refer to restaurant ownership as a "mid-term" goal, meaning it's probably at least 1-3 years in the future, but in the meantime I have been doing all the research I can, and almost as a joke I mentioned to a friend of mine that, "Wouldn't it be funny if a book was out there like 'Restaurants for Dummies'?" We looked on Amazon, and voila! There really IS one!
After reading this, I admit, I picked up more than a few helpful hints and insider suggestions I did not know. This book cannot turn you into an experienced restaurateur overnight, but, as I've been impressed to learn again and again when referring to the `Dummies' series, it's more than just lightweight fluff sandwiched between two covers. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the inner workings of the restaurant business, and especially for those (crazy types like me) thinking of getting into this (high-risk, often low-yield, hard-work required) profession.
Book Description
Gardening can be a political act. Creativity, fulfillment, connection, revolution--it all begins when we get our hands in the dirt. Food Not Lawns combines practical wisdom on ecological design and community-building with a fresh, green perspective on an age-old subject. Activist and urban gardener Heather Flores shares her nine-step permaculture design to help farmsteaders and city dwellers alike build fertile soil, promote biodiversity, and increase natural habitat in their own "paradise gardens." But Food Not Lawns doesn't begin and end in the seed bed. This joyful permaculture lifestyle manual inspires readers to apply the principles of the paradise garden--simplicity, resourcefulness, creativity, mindfulness, and community--to all aspects of life. Plant "guerilla gardens" in barren intersections and medians; organize community meals; start a street theater troupe or host a local art swap; free your kitchen from refrigeration and enjoy truly fresh, nourishing foods from your own plot of land; work with children to create garden play spaces. Flores cares passionately about the damaged state of our environment and the ills of our throwaway society. In Food Not Lawns, she shows us how to reclaim the earth one garden at a time.

Despite what others have said..........2007-10-17
...this is an excellent book. I might not agree with the author on every point, but there is enough good material in it that I am glad I purchased it.
An inspired 40-something.......2007-09-04
Food Not Lawns speaks to my heart and has inspired me in my home gardening. I bought copies for two dear gardening friends who are in their 20's and 30's, and they are also excited by the ideas presented in the book. The author takes a holistic view of community and gardening, of working with Nature as an orchestra of forces influencing each other and working collectively together. Heather Flores encourages us to think out of the box and some might find that uncomfortable, but I still think her vision and sense of hope is so needed in our world today. completely false advertising.......2007-07-05
I see that this books appears a hit with many reviewers, but I am unfortunately going to dissent. I was excited to read this book when it arrived and was subsequently dissappointed in the overall quality of the work as a whole. First and foremost, Flores leaves out a great deal of detail with regard to the actual work involved in any form of agriculture, be it animal husbandry, permaculture, or anything between. I say this not only as an avid reader, but also an environmental studies major reviewing the work for a class as well. Second, Flores' method of combining the topics of agriculture and social change is facetious at best, with no real segway from the former to the latter. In other words, this is literally two unconnected books sharing the same binding. Finally, and most disheartening of all, the work gives faulty advice at best, especially with regard to her advice on dealing with numerous aspects of gardening (traditional and permaculture), pending jail time, and conflict management strategies(with latter are potentially dangerous). I will also note that I resold this book immediately upon completion due to the above. Those interested would be better served to read The Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing, or other such related books by other reputable authors such as Joseph Jenkins, Eliot Coleman, Louise Riotte, or John and Martha Storey. In short, do not purchase this book if you are serious about either agriculture or social change.
if you are over 40 skip it... so gen X.......2007-05-25
This is a very shallow book by the new generation of writers that find fault with everything done in the twenty years before they were born,
Its very shallow, big type and very preachy.
If you are interested in gardening, try Giaas garden, a much more serious study of permiculture.
In this rambling book, the aurthor boasts of not making over 8 k a year, but inherited the money to buy her farm!
I liked camping living until I was thirty, now I am 45 and really like my freezer and new stove.( yes, I have my own three hens and belong to a CSA)
I know a number of the original flower/farm people, and as they got older they liked having a few more comforts.
So this is one of the new gen X books, shallow to a fault. Nothing but sound bites.
the aurthor sems all hyped about third world living, but I am not sure she has ever been to a third world and seen how hard that style of life is,,it is easy to glamorius the distant!!!
Not just Gardening--A guide to Activism and Environmentalism.......2007-01-23
I picked up this book to learn practical application of permacultural principles applied to urban yard scales--and there is a wealth of such information here. However, I do feel like Flores preaches just a little too much about the environmental destruction and political problems currently plaguing our country. In my view, anyone picking up a book called Food Not Lawns probably is already well-versed in such issues, and Flores is essentially preaching to the converted. That said, this book DOES have tons of practical information, and I would recommend it as an excellent counterbalance and companion book to Toby Hemenway's Gaia's Garden.
Book Description
The death of the Roman Empire is one of the perennial mysteries of world history. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Peter Heather proposes a stunning new solution: Rome generated its own nemesis. Centuries of imperialism turned the neighbors it called barbarians into an enemy capable of dismantling the Empire that had dominated their lives for so long. Heather is a leading authority on the late Roman Empire and on the barbarians. In The Fall of the Roman Empire, he explores the extraordinary success story that was the Roman Empire and uses a new understanding of its continued strength and enduring limitations to show how Europe's barbarians, transformed by centuries of contact with Rome on every possible level, eventually pulled it apart. He shows first how the Huns overturned the existing strategic balance of power on Rome's European frontiers, to force the Goths and others to seek refuge inside the Empire. This prompted two generations of struggle, during which new barbarian coalitions, formed in response to Roman hostility, brought the Roman west to its knees. The Goths first destroyed a Roman army at the battle of Hadrianople in 378, and went on to sack Rome in 410. The Vandals spread devastation in Gaul and Spain, before conquering North Africa, the breadbasket of the Western Empire, in 439. We then meet Attila the Hun, whose reign of terror swept from Constantinople to Paris, but whose death in 453 ironically precipitated a final desperate phase of Roman collapse culminating in the Vandals' defeat of the massive Byzantine Armada: the west's last chance for survival. Peter Heather convincingly argues that the Roman Empire was not on the brink of social or moral collapse. What brought it to an end were the barbarians.

Why the Western Roman Empire collapsed.......2007-09-30
Many causes have been given for the fall of the Roman Empire. Some speculate that the increasing wealth of Roman citizens caused economic and military senescence. Other claim the introduction of Christianity softened the military edge of Roman leaders. Even the presence of lead in the water supply (from the pipes) has been blamed. Often these conclusions were based on historical bias (naturally, a Marxist-leaning historian would look to economic causes) or lack of proper information (only recently has it been archaeologically proven that Roman farm output did not decline over the course of the 5th century). Exacerbating the problem is the fact that most of the records of the Roman Empire have been destroyed over the years, and records from outside the Western Empire are non-existent due to the illiteracy of the Germanic and other "barbarian" peoples.
Author Peter Heather is an historian and expert on the late Western Empire and its Germanic and Hunnic neighbours. Using the latest archaeological discoveries, and sifting through original papers and classic histories (e.g. Gibbons), he brings us this new and eminently readable treatise on the fall of the Western Empire over the course of one hundred years from 376 (when two Gothic tribes arrive on the Imperial frontier demanding asylum) to the deposition of the last Western emporer (476). In that time, he builds a convincing argument that the Barbarian invasions over those 100 years were directly responsible for the fall of Rome. That this is the most obvious explanation based on the historical record does not diminish his thesis, as he successfully demolishes the more esoteric "deeper" arguments of his predescessor historians (such as Gibbon, who pointed to Christianity as the cause).
Thus: At a time when the Persian Empire was rejuvenated as a united political entity (and thus pressuring the Eastern Empire as a rival superpower), the Huns invaded the lands of eastern Europe, displacing the Goths and others westward into the lands of the Romans. Over the course of the previous 300 years, diplomatic interference in the Germani's internal affairs, periodic punitive expeditions, and especially trade had transformed their cultures to a point where they were able to coalesce into supergroups (Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals) capable of directly challenging Roman military forces. As they carved out niches for themselves (Vandals in Africa, Visigoths in Gaul/Spain, etc.), the losses in tax revenues sapped the strength of the military (unable to pay for soldiers). Thus, when Attila himself appeared, the Roman military was already in a downward spiral. Basically, the loss of tax income caused by wave after wave of Barbarian invasion (ultimately fueled by Hunnic expansion) crippled Rome's ability to field enough military strength to preserve the Empire.
Such an analysis could be dry and academic, but Heather brings the book to life with vivid portraits of everyone from the smallest Imperial usurpers to Attila the Hun. He even instills sly humour (he describes an experiment with his 11-year-old son on how long it would take to shout the obligatory acclamations to the Emporer in the Senate) and deliberate anachronisms (comparing one archaeologist to Indiana Jones) to bring variety to the narrative. There is also an ample supply of maps and some pictures. Thus, it's an entertaining book to read. Unfortunately, it lasts a bit too long for my tastes, and becomes a little repetitive, thus robbing it of a 5th star. Still, recommended for anyone interested in the latest thoughts on the demise of the Western Roman Empire.
Excellent Account of a Monumental Event.......2007-07-28
The "Fall of the Roman Empire" casts a huge shadow. A vast Empire, one of the great civilisations of history, went in barely a century from being the "sole superpower" to a mere plaything of barbarian tribes.
Why did it happen? All sorts of reasons can be offered, and Heather offers several, but what it comes down to is that this is simply what empires do - they rise, they exist for a time - years, decades or (as in Romes's case) centuries - and then they fall. Rome had already had a better "innings" than most, and in the fifth century its luck ran out.
It is usual to blame the Fall on the Empire's internal problems, and say that it became "decadent" or whatever. Heather, probably rightly, focuses more on what was happening outside Rome's borders. The Barbarian tribes, living for centuries with that 800 pound Roman "gorilla" next door, combined into larger units like the Frankish or Gothic kingdoms, which were a tougher proposition for Rome to cope with. Everlasting warfare with these states gradually wore the Empire down, and finally another barbarian, Attila, drove many tribes from their old homes and forced them to try their luck migrating into Roman territory. This proved more than Rome (or at least its western half) could cope with. So down the tubes it went.
No doubt, had Rome not fallen from this cause, it would eventually have fallen another way. Empires are usually longer lived than individuals, but are no more immortal. But Heather does a magnificent job of showing how and why it fell as and when it did.
One minor regret. Perhaps a little more "afterword" about post-Roman Europe might have been in order. For the significant thing about the Roman Empire is not that it fell (which was bound to happen sometime) but that it was never rebuilt. By contrast, China fell to Mongol "barbarians" in the 13C, an invasion probably as devastating as anything Western Rome underwent, yet within a century had gotten its breath back, expelled the invaders, and installed a native Ming Dynasty. Similarly, Egypt was able to spit out the Hyksos and other intruders. Yet Rome's former subjects not only didn't do this, but (unless the Arthurian legends count) seem never to have even tried. Rather, they appear to have largely shrugged their shoulders and made the best of things under their barbarian rulers. While purely external factors can explain the fall itself, they can't explain this apparent acceptance of it. Even when Roman lands were "liberated" by Justinian, the inhabitants seldom rallied round, and when Byzantium's grip loosened they just flopped back into barbarian hands. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that, however traumatic the Empire's fall had been, a lot of its subjects soon found they didn't really miss it all that much. This calls for explanation.
Still, that's quibbling. Heather has written a great book (even if his 21C idioms are irritating at times) and it needs to be read by anyone interested in this subject.
Dont invite a barbarian to lunch.......2007-07-27
Two Oxford classicists, working independently, have simultaneously published books on the fall of the Roman Empire. Peter Heather is an historian of the later Empire and of Barbarian Northern Europe. Bryan Ward-Perkins is an archaeologist specialising in rural society during the fall. Both historians decisively contradict recent rather dotty arguments that the Barbarians were not all that bad; that their conquest of the Western Empire would hardly have been noticed by the mass of the people; and that only the rich would have experienced a drop in living standards. Ward-Perkins' conclusion from extensive digging on former Roman villages is stark: the invasions were violent disasters. The drop in living standards was so catastrophic that they would not regain Empire levels for fifteen hundred years. His full title is uncompromising: The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilisation. Despite some empathy with the Barbarians, Heather agrees with Ward-Perkins that the destruction of the Western Empire was an apocalyptic event. His 500 page book employs well-honed analysis combined with splendid narrative, to address the age-old question: why did the Western half of the empire, so apparently all powerful, almost unassailable, worried only by the threat of Persia in the east, fall to the Barbarian invaders from the north in less than a century? In the early fourth century the Western Empire (pace Gibbon) had not been weakened by Christianity, was not in decline, was very prosperous, and the army was far from enfeebled. Heather's analysis, sinewy, cogent and informed, is too complex for adequate summary here but he believes that after the Huns caused a seismic shift in the balance of power in the North Roman failure came less from Roman weakness than from Barbarian desperation. After the destruction the long-term winner, oddly enough, was the Church. With the old Roman bureaucracy destroyed in the West priests came to monopolise literacy for more than a thousand years. Secular culture would reside with the Arabs!
excellent, clear analysis.......2007-07-07
This book explains with amazing clarity how and why the western Roman empire fell apart between 376 and 476 AD. It covers roughly the same ground as the third volume of Gibbon (minus the obsession with Christianity), but with much better analysis of the political and military calculations of the various parties. It also gives a very coherent account of who the various "barbarian" groups were, and how they formed and interacted: a topic which I have found incredibly confusing in other books. (Apparently this is the author's specialty.)
Note that the word "decline" is not in the title. The author's thesis is that the western empire did not collapse from within; it always had its problems, but in the fourth century it was as strong as ever. Rather, what caused it to fall was that unfriendly interaction with the Romans encouraged Germanic peoples on the frontier to become stronger and more unified; these groups were then impelled into the empire by the onslaught of the Huns, where they began taking over parts of the empire. This triggered a downward spiral in which decreased tax revenues resulting from the lost or ravaged territories made it more difficult for the Romans to fund the military, whereby they lost more territory, and so on. This process is explained in fascinating detail in the book. A last-ditch rescue attempt by the eastern empire in 468 failed in a disastrous naval battle, and it was game over for the west. The eastern empire, meanwhile, continued to prosper through the sixth century; while it had internal problems similar to those of the west, accidents of geography protected it for the time being.
In conclusion, if you are looking for clarity regarding what the heck was going on in fifth century Europe, this is the book for you. It is written in a colloquial style which makes it easy and amusing to read. It includes a number of maps, a dramatis personae, a glossary, and extensive notes, all of which are very useful.
A departure from tradition.......2007-06-26
This book is excellent. The author puts for a break from the traditional Gibbon approach to why the Romans fell apart. The author's work is extremely well documented. He lays out his arguments in a logical manner. Each point sort of builds on the next one in the book. The book seems to be told from the Barbarian's point of view. The book does seem to take the long way though to get to the meat of the argument. The work is very well documented. An average reader might get lost some in the names. You almost have to have a good background on the subject to truly appreciate the book. The main point of the book is that successive Barbarian invasions just wore out the Romans. That created conditions that launched independence movements in the outlying provinces like Great Britain. The author argues convincingly that the further success of the eastern half of the empire showed that internal rot didn't do the Romans in. As a reader reads this it is hard not to draw comparisons to events today for the US. The book showed how multiple problems stretched the Romans to the point of breaking. Then a reader sees the newspapers and wonder if the stretched US Army might lead to conditions similar to what the Romans went through.
