Customer Reviews:
So-so.......2007-09-10
Good basics but probably more for the new long-distance cyclist. I felt it a bit redundant and perhaps 1/2 of the book was actually helpful to read. Written in an easy-to-read fashion.
Very slim on content.......2007-08-02
I am a subscriber to Bicycling magazine. Every month I eagerly open the latest issue and almost without exception am disappointed in the lack of substantial content. Most articles are superficial at best, stating obvious facts and making suggestions of questionable value. If you have had a similar experience with the Bicycling the magazine then you already know what you will find in this book.
There is surprising little useful content here. Equipment tips and suggestions are generally useless. For instance much attention is given to the benefit of clipless pedals. Well duh!!! Important topics for long distance cycling such as working out a comfortable saddle system are given almost no useful coverage (usually something like "get a saddle which is comfortable"). Most of the chapters as they relate to equipment are quite dated and need to be revised.
Topics such as Lactic Threshold, heart rate monitoring, and training strategies are introduced but unless they are completely new to you the discussions of each are not likely to be useful.
I generally could not bring myself to completely read any of the suggestions and skimmed through most of the book. I did find a couple of pieces worth reading but to be honest I can not recall them at the moment.
My advice is to skip this book. Anything of value that could be found in it could also be easily found on any of a number of websites devoted to cycling and training. For an excellent alternative book covering a lot of useful training discussion see "Cycling Past 50" by Joel Friel. Despite the title, riders of all ages will find wonderful discussions of training physiology and strategies which will apply well to your long distance goals.
Now if someone would just would make a cycling magazine that is worth reading so I can relegate "Bicycling" to the bathroom stall with Mens Health and Outside..........
Good but not systematic.......2007-05-13
I was a bit disappointed with this book. The title implies that the authors present a systematic way of building skill and endurance for long distance cycling. Instead, it is more of a collection of tips. The content is still worthwhile.
Calling All Cyclists.......2007-04-09
Cyclists of all levels should check out these training tips. Even those not doing long distance can find a lot of useful information.
Love it!!.......2007-03-16
I absolutely think this book is terrific. You must read every word. It has much useable info on some very important subjects such as nutrition, prep, etc. Even if you are not doing long distance, this book is a must!!!!

VERY SHORT rides ..........2002-07-08
This book is only for the very casual rider who lives in Long Island and carries his bike by car. As a Manhattan resident (sans car, of course) who was looking forward to help in exploring Long Island via train and bike, I was disappointed.
The 40 bike rides described are pretty SHORT -- less than half are over 15 miles and even the longer rides have options that reduce the ride to 8-12 mile range. There are even a handful of rides less than 5 miles long.
All ride descriptions do include driving directions to the starting point, in addition to map and route guide. However it's difficult to use this book without a car. The starting points are scattered all over the island with little information on how to connect them via bike route or train.
Indispensable for the weekend rider.......2000-10-17
This book includes a great selection of bike tours, and is a must-buy for cyclists who live on Long Island or plan to tour it on two wheels. My teenage son and I have ridden almost all the tours in this book and have never been disappointed...in fact, I've lived on Long Island for 25 years and discovered many scenic areas I never knew existed. The maps and directions are much clearer than similar books I've used, and most tours include both short and long versions of the route to match your available time and stamina. A nice bonus is the wonderful one-day ferry-and-bike tour of Block Island (actually part of Rhode Island).
Smartly put together.......2000-10-01
This book of do-it-yourself road bike tours is a great example of how the genre should be done. The maps are clear, the cue sheets are concise, and the descriptions are informative but brief. Distances of the rides vary from 8 - 20 miles or so, and are largely well-chosen. And the book is small enough to take with you.
When I lived on Long Island I did several of these rides and was not disappointed.

This book was a gift for someone. He couldn't stop bragging about how the history in these books is so authentic and correct. I will continue to send this person books by W. Michael Gear.
Spellbinding non-typical western........1999-12-11
This book's first edition was in November 1988. I have read this same novel at least four times. Once you start reading, you can't put it down. If you love westerns, you must read this one.
This book is magnificent........1999-02-20

Book Description
"Brilliant . . . even more ambitious than Vogel's How I Learned to Drive . . . it covers more ground and is bolder in its storytelling. Vogel's language is at its most poetic, eloquent and elegiac. In fact, its vivid imagery rivals the prose style of any great American short story writer. The play sounds like it might have been adapted from a beautiful, undiscovered novella."-New Haven Register
"One of the most absorbing evenings of theatre to come along in some time."-Variety
Past and present collide on a snowy Christmas Eve for a troubled family of five. Humorous and heart-wrenching, this beautifully written play proves that magic can be found in the simplest breaths of life. Combining the elements of No theatre and Bunraku with contemporary Western sensibilities, Vogel's Ride is a mesmerizing homage to the works of Thornton Wilder, including Our Town. A moving and memorable study of the American family careening near the edge of oblivion.
Paula Vogel's plays include The Baltimore Waltz, Mineola Twins, Hot â~n' Throbbing, Desdemona, And Baby Makes Seven, among others. Ms. Vogel will be the resident playwright during the Signature Theatre's 2004â05 season dedicated to her works. She has taught at Brown University in the MFA playwriting program since 1985.

Book Description
No one brings to life the Old West like Louis L'Amour. Collected here for the first time, these vintage frontier stories introduce you to lawmen and loners, ranchers and renegades, gunslingers, cardsharps, bank robbers, etc. In these pages L'Amour brings to life such classic characters as the Cactus Kid, Tensleep Mooney, One-Eared Tim, and the gunfighter Kim Sartain. These are frontier tales as only L'Amour can tell them--stories that surprise like the sharp crack of a Winchester and move like the lonely howl of the wind across an empty plain on the long ride home.
Customer Reviews:
A Taste of the West.......2000-06-05
A great book for Louis L'amour fans. The story, Trigonometry Tenderfoot, brought the west to your fingertips. These stories tell you about rangers, lawmen, outlaws, and ranchers. These are great stories about the people who first came to the west.

Customer Reviews:
Money isn't everything, laughter is.......2001-06-05
That is what bicycle touring is all about, not about fancy equipment; as the reader from Saratoga implies. It seems he is just riding up and down the coast because when I tour cross country, I can go entire days without encountering a "first World Country campground". Butterman's message is that your most important equipment is a sense of humor and of adventure. Just as Butterman recommends that you tour lightly, this book is light weight with no fluff and no waste; just as he shows you how to tour economically, this book is about half the price as the standard tour guide. Just as Butterman recommends that you squeeze maximum enjoyment out of your cycling adventure, he has provided a book that one newspaper reviewer has called "fun to read even if you never plan to ride a bike again". However, while reading his book, your primary urge will be to hop on your bike and GO GO GO.
A really poor guide to cycle touring.......2001-04-21
I've ridden obout 500 miles or so on cycle tour, and I have to say I'm glad I got my information from "Effective Cycling." Steve Butterman would rather have a 'flickstand' than fenders on a cycle tour, and recommends carrying a poncho and finding shelter when it rains (having never worked out proper raingear on a bicycle). He recommends carrying a water purification device, when most first world country campgrounds have drinkable tap water.
A complete waste of money. Get a copy of "Effective Cycling" instead.
Everything you need. Nothing you don't. And no SUVs!.......2000-05-20
Butterman tells you how to prepare for long rides without writing a long book. This guide to getting yourself out for a tour has just the essentials: equipment, very basic repairs, a practical repair kit, training, and clothing. Touring is not about fashion! So, Butterman stays with practical choices. If nothing else, you'll know that it's possible to tour on a bicycle without spending a fortune. And that's the joy of long-distance cycling.
A very densely packed book.......1999-05-06
Not a page is wasted in Steve Butterman's 88 page book "Bicycle Touring: How to Prepare for Long Rides." The book quickly and plainly answers a lot of the basic questions that people have when thinking about a long bicycling trip:
What will I need to bring? How do I plan my trip? What kind of shape do I need to be in? What about dangerous road conditions? How will people treat me? How much will it cost? What will I eat? What about weather? What about mountains/hills? How will I keep clean? ... and many, many, many more.
The author gives you the do's and don'ts for buying the equipment for your ride, planning the ride, and actually doing the ride. Although this book does not include specific route information, it does have scores of referrals to people who do that sort of thing for a living.
You will walk away from this book knowing about things about long rides that you wouldn't have even thought about otherwise. It is a must-read for anyone that is thinking about a bicycle touring adventure.
This is the one!.......1999-01-22
Interested in getting started in bicycle touring but confused as to which book will give you the most for your money? Look no further. Paradoxically, of the dozen books I've purchased over the last two years on bicycle touring, this was the cheapest, yet by far the easiest to understand and most informative. Ounce for ounce, page for page this book provides the reader with all he/she needs to know about not only preparation but what to expect when touring. Mr. Butterman if you ever read this, thank you for a job well!

A tender romance.......2007-06-22
Reviewed by Lori Plach for Reader Views (6/07)
When you least expect it, it can happen. Just what is "it?" For Jena, Lara and Melody it is an opportunity for love. Not just "puppy" love but the real thing. None of the three young Wisconsin women are expecting to find their soul-mate but that is what happens.
Jena needs a summer job. Travis is a busy lawyer whose wife died leaving him to raise his young daughters, Mandi and Carly, on his own. He advertises for a "summer girl." A summer girl is someone who will take care of his daughters, do some light housekeeping and take the girls to their activities. Travis' sister Glenda was living in the attached apartment and taking care of the girls until a man interested her and she ran off with him. Travis is expecting someone much younger than 26. But 26-year-old Jena comes to interview and Travis is impressed, so he hires her. Jena fills the void that the girls feel since losing their mother and love starts to grow not only for the girls but also for Travis. When summer is over, will Jena be gone from the girls lives?
Aren't the older sisters always supposed to marry before the younger ones? Melody always thought that she would get married before her younger sister Bonnie. Bonnie's new fiance is coming to dinner at their parents and wedding plans are set into motion. Oh no, Bonnie's fiance is someone who Melody used to date. Melody's parents are all pleased and the house soon becomes Wedding Central. Melody just wants someone to talk to, so she starts spending more and more time with Luke, the neighbor guy who has always loved Melody. Will Melody and Luke discover that they are more than just neighbors and friends? Will Bonnie still marry Scott when she finds out what happened to her sister's dealings with her intended?

National Bestseller
Winner of the Canadian Authors Association Birks Family Foundation Award for Biography
Finalist for the Writers’ Trust Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing
The investigation that helped Truscott get a new appeal.
In 1959, a popular schoolboy, just 14 years old, was convicted and sentenced to hang for the rape and murder of his 12-year-old classmate. That summer, Canada lost its innocence and the shocking story of Steven Truscott became imprinted on the nation’s memory. First published in 2001, “Until You Are Dead” revealed new witnesses, leads and evidence never presented to the courts. Now this national bestseller is fully revised and updated, and takes readers from that fateful night in 1959 up to the new appeal granted to Truscott in 2006. Julian Sher’s award-winning and insightful chronicle details Steven Truscott’s dramatic final battle – with the help of his family, investigative journalists and lawyers – to clear his name once and for all.

A Heart Wrenching Account of a True Story.......2004-05-23
"Until You Are Dead" is a journalistic masterpeice. Julian Sher sets out to uncover the truth about one of Canada's most contraversial criminal cases. What he finds is a shocking story of haw one boy slipped through the cracks in the legal system and almost lost his life as a result. Andrea Carter and the Dangerous Decision (Circle C Adventures)
ASIN: 0825431883 |
Book Description
Twelve-year-old Andrea Carter has several frightening encounters after taking her horse, Taffy, and running away from her home at the Circle C Ranch. She begins to realize that there really is no place like home.
Customer Reviews:
Loved it!.......2007-06-13
Andrea Carter is a precocious young girl who often fails to "look before she leaps", and ends up having to dig herself out of the hole she's found herself in. A dyed-in-the-wool tomboy, Andi finds little benefit in the day-to-day trappings of a "proper" young lady's life in the year 1880, has no problem storing a smelly horse blanket in her bedroom, and no use for nor interest in the dresses that hang in her closet. Andi's impetuous behavior has consequences, though, whether having to clean the entire barn for failing to complete her chores, or more serious consequences when she attempts to run away from home when her pride is injured.
"The Long Ride Home" is a great read, for 'tweens and adults alike; we can all use a reminder that our choices have far-reaching consequences and effects on the lives of others.
Highly recommended!
A Most Delightful Book!.......2006-03-29
The Long Ride Home is one of those enjoyable adventure stories that both boys and girls will want to read. Within the pages of this delightful book, they will meet spirited Andrea Carter, a horse-loving tomboy living in the Old West. Andi's craving for adventure-which usually leads to trouble!-will appeal to the tween reader and keep them turning the pages from beginning to end.
Susan Marlow has done a fine job on her historical research, and the reader will get a genuine feel for what life was like in the Old West, without getting bogged down in tedious detail.
This book would be a worthwhile addition to any school library or family book shelf.
A Delightful Hard-To-Find Tween/Adult Book.......2006-03-27
Nothing will be the same for twelve-year old Andi Carter after her older brother Chad saves her life by pulling her from the top rail of the corral seconds before the wild, rearing, black stallion split the rail in two. Dazed, but unhurt, Andi pleaded with her brother to let her explain why she was on the fence. He wouldn't listen, but threatened to "tan her backside" if she went near his horse again. Embarrassed in front of the ranch hands, and angry at her brother-but displeased with her own behavior-Andi turns to her best friend, a golden hued, high-spirited Palomino named Taffy.
Intense and vivacious, Andi can't seem to do anything right. She attracts trouble like metal to a magnet. She leaves her chores undone because she's either lost in daydreams, or scheming for time with Taffy. And she's intensely curious about the wild, black stallion Chad warned her about, the one that almost killed her that morning.
When Andi overhears her family discussing what a problem she has become, she determines they are better off without her. The next day she gets up before dawn, saddles Taffy, and begins a dangerous journey into trouble; a costly journey that will jeopardize her life, and undermine her sense of security. Taken in by a Mexican family, she also learns about discrimination and how difficult it is to provide for a family. And like the prodigal son, Andi finds out that home and family are precious.
Pre-teens will identify with this delightful story and clamor for sequels. Debut author, Susan Marlow, from Washington created a memorable character and dynamic story line. Andi is real and memorable because girls will see themselves in her. Adults will love remembering their tomboy days through Audi's eyes. Although intended for youth, I couldn't put this book down until the end; definitely one to add to your shopping list.
Appreciating Home.......2006-03-21
I enjoyed watching Andrea learning the value of those things she already had at her disposal. The character development was good for the other main characters, as well. It was a nice leisurely read without being boring.
Simply Loved it!.......2006-02-02
This book made me cry so much! I could read this book over and over and never get bored! It's really a book you can't put down.
I say it would make a really great movie. It shows her love for her brother and her horse.Though naughty at first she learns that people out there aren't as lucky as she.
Simply loved it, i recemended this book for any age.
I'm sure you'll love it too!
