Book Description
THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING is a classic in the field. Written by true teachers of public speaking who have been in the classroom for many years and who have adapted their methods to best meet the needs of their changing student body, this Thirteenth Edition stays true to what has made it a market-leading text for hundreds of thousands of students. THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING presents the speechmaking process in a six-step framework based on classical and contemporary theory. The straightforward writing style and effective use of examples enables students to understand and effectively perform key speechmaking activities. The six-step framework emphasizes topic selection, audience analysis and adaptation, effective research (including appropriate use of Internet resources), organization (with emphasis on outlining), language and delivery. The six action steps are introduced in generic form and then later adapted to follow principles of informative and persuasive speaking. THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING prepares students to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to their everyday lives.

The Best and Only Nursing Book You Need.......2007-10-01
Super informative, easy to understand, great resource section. I have 1 other book--the AAP book--and it is not 1/2 as good. Great layout, natural order of progression. And best of all, no hidden agenda, or platform to proselytize from. I read it over and over again, nearly wore it out, used every inch of every page of it. You cannot go wrong buying this book. It's like having a lactation consultant 24x7. Buy it! :-)
Great breastfeeding book-one of the best!!.......2007-09-04
Are you a new mom? Do you desire to breastfeed your baby but find yourself lost? Are you a seasoned mom who has breastfed before? This book has something to offer for every type of parent! I found it invaluable while I nursed my son. Especially for those parents who do not have a readily accessible lactation consultant or La Leche League group in your area. Best book to add to your parenting library!
Great Book For First Time Moms!.......2007-08-15
I purchased this book just a few days prior to having my baby, and was so happy that I had my copy with me at the hospital. It has been a great reference from day 1. I took a breastfeeding class at our hospital, but they did not address the challenges of breastfeeding at all. I was not prepared, and thank goodness I had this book handy to help me through engorgement, latching, pumping and storing. I highly recommend it to any mother who is even thinking about breastfeeding.
Invaluable living overseas.......2007-08-06
I don't write reviews often, but I had to for this book because of the help and comfort it has given me.
My husband and I are living overseas in Germany. We speak the language but not to such a specific extent which makes problem dr. visits more challenging for us. This book has been my saving grace. It helped us with many things from getting off to a good start with the latch, how to keep baby awake to feed, medicines ok to take during nursing, breast infections (I've had 3), sore nipples (now that baby is teething), all the way to starting solids. I wouldn't feel so comfortable in my nursing practices living over here without it.
There is a great deal more to breastfeeding than I ever thought and this book addresses it all. I brought it with us to the hospital and I'm still referring to it today - baby girl is 6 months already. I can't say enough about this book.
Great Reference.......2007-07-26
This book contains comprehensive, solid information to help you become a successful nursing mother. I recommend buying this while you are pregnant to read up on what to expect and plan for those early weeks and beyond. I still use it for reference if I have a question.
We are still nursing at 11months and plan to continue for a little while longer.
So That's What They're For is also a great nursing book if you are looking for something that is a little more casual in tone.
Above all, I think a determination to succeed and confidence that you are giving your baby the best start in life are what helps the most.

Excellent product condition! No problems with seller - very straightforward purchase and will buy again!!
Decent, but had a lot of fluff.......2007-08-29
For me this book was required for a class. I guess it wasn't bad but I felt like I had to pick through all their example stories to find any of the real content. So much was case studies of one child or another. And most of the case studies were in themselves mostly fluff.
Packed with usefull information.......2007-02-18
I found this book very engaging, the topics were interesting and the graphics were very appropriate. I really liked how every other page had an interesting question that you could apply to everyday life and you got the answer in 2 pages. I would skip ahead to find out the answer. But after my developmental psychology class was over i wanted to keep this book. i love it.

Worth it.......2007-09-17
This book is worth every penny. It isn't about how to sew, and it isn't about getting rich quick. It's about how to start and run a GOOD business. Every chapter basically includes a "So this is what you want to accomplish...Here is how most people screw this up...Please don't do that, do it the right way and be better!" It's worth buying, highlighting, rereading and using on a regular basis.
You Must Buy This Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-09
If you are a DE or are planning to be this is the best resource to have. It answered all the questions I had as well as ones I had'nt thought of. I recieved my book a couple of days ago and I've read it cover to cover totally devouring it! Kathleen is so generous in sharing her vast knowledge and inspires you while keeping a clear and rational perspective of the industry. After reading her book, I feel more confident and educated yet humble and level headed. You need to buy this book!!!!
Now so many things make sense.......2007-05-24
From a homesewer's perspective -
I cannot recommend this book, and Kathleen's website fashion-incubator.com, enough.
Buy the book from Kathleen, read it cover to cover. Read her blog starting at the first entry.
The amount of knowledge contained in her efforts is astounding. And, as opposed to most textbooks I've encountered, the information is concise and well illustrated.
I'm off to buy gobs of Pro-Tricot Fusible. :) Thanks Kathleen.
The must-have book..........2007-05-16
I've never written an Amazon review before, but this book deserves it. Not only is it easy to understand, the format is intuitive and the helpful worksheets really keep you focused. This is the first book I've purchased on the subject, based on other's reviews... and I have to say, they were all right. BUY IT!
Entrepreneur Tested and Approved.......2007-03-26
I was sourcing a hard-to-find fabric recently and used Kathleen's book line-by-line in my conversation with the dealer. I was amazed at how Kathleen had predicted, verbatim at times, how the conversation would go. There's no doubt that she knows her stuff. This is the most useful book for the design entrepreneur I've seen, and written like a friend who gives you the unvarnished truth...like it or not!
Book Description
For too long, religion has been a political plaything of theright-wing in this country. American churches seem more concerned with whatpeople do with their bodies than with their souls. Now, Kathleen KennedyTownsend issues a spiritual call to arms to those who feel like her thattoday's churches--Catholic and Protestant alike--are failing to promote thewelfare of those who depend upon them. After recounting her personal storyin one of the most prominent Catholic families in America, she shows howAmerica's neediest are now forgotten while their churches fight politicalbattles against abortion rights and homosexual marriages. She provides hopethrough powerful examples of individuals effecting change, from obscuresocial workers to The Purpose-Driven- Life's Rick Warren, and maintainsthat our individual actions can return our churches to their traditionalrole as shepherds to their flock.
Customer Reviews:
Mrs. Townson is out of touch.......2007-08-26
Mrs. Townson needs to learn a little more about how and why this Country were founded before she write a book on this subject.
Infact she should learn a litle more about the Book she wants to judge.
If this country were run like it was set to run by our Founding Fathers we would not have the problems we have today.
We have too many other ideas and agenda's being presented and we have followed them and are no longer a Christian country. If this keeps up we will be taken over by the Muslims, like they have said.
Mrs. Townson you have been listening to Uncle Ted for too long.
Fair and balanced commentary.......2007-08-16
I absolutely agree with the theme of this book. I came into the Catholic faith a few years ago in a parish that emphasized social justice above all else and it was a big reason behind my decision to become Catholic. I have since moved and cannot find a parish that makes this central tenet of Christianity a central part of their teachings. It's so sad but perhaps this book can help awaken people to these failings of our religious leaders and demand change.
A reminder of the gospels so many Christians have forgotten.......2007-08-01
Townsend's book is a necessary call to those who style themselves Christians yet imagine that they can pursue riches (Jesus was against riches and the rich: re especially Luke and the parable of Lazarus and the rich man (sometimes Lazarus and Dives, as Dives is Latin for rich man), advocate capital punishment (Jesus: let he who is without sin cast the first stone), love weapons (no warrant for that in the NT), ignore the plight of the poor and wretched, and justify any war at all, let alone aggressive war, as in Iraq.
Call for a Religious Left.......2007-07-27
In "Failing America's Faithful", RFK's oldest daughter states that the Christian church in the United States, has moved away from its traditional roles of providing charity and promoting social justice. Instead, churches are primarily involved in one or both of the following:
a. Political battles about personal moral issues (sex, abortion, etc.)
b. A type of "individualist" Christianity where participants emphasize their own spiritual growth and needs, and maybe perhaps those of their immediate community, but de-emphasizing, ignoring or even walling themselves off from the issues that affect society at large.
Along with the right-wing evangelicals and the mainstream Protestant denominations, Ms. Kennedy's own Catholic Church is up for criticism too; not only abortion but contraception is banned there, and women are not allowed to be priests. (A whole chapter is devoted to the position of women in the Catholic Church).
The book covers some of the Kennedy family history, including her own childhood experiences, as well as the Church's (both Protestant and Catholic) place in the labor, civil rights, and anti-war movements through the years. But within the past twenty years or so, public Christianity in the United States has largely been co-opted by the Right; the Left is now mostly secular, and often hostile to religion. There is a Religious Left, but it is relatively small and quiet.
According to Kennedy, a true "Christian Nation" would be actively involved in supporting causes such as civil rights, women's rights, welfare for the poor, environmental issues, etc. rather than being involved in moral judgements, supporting "business conservative" concerns such as lower taxes, or promoting individual spiritual comfort. Secularism alone will not bring about a more just nation; a spiritual basis is required. The relationship between religion and politics should not be a "wall" but a "window" where they can observe and influence each other, but not unduly.
Essentially, she's calling for a stronger "Christian Left" to counter the "Christian Right". This may already be happening in some form, with even the evangelicals taking a closer look at environmental issues and such, not just slavishly following the lead of the business conservatives.
My only real criticism of this book, is that Kennedy basically wants the church to switch from one set of political battles to another more in line with her own political beliefs. That's fine, but to be a church, and not just a secular charity or political action group, there should be a definite spiritual structure. I would have liked to see a little more Biblical support for some of her positions. But that's just me....
Progressive Christians should read this.......2007-07-21
If you think Christianity has potential, but has lost its way, read this. The author does a good job of pointing out the loss of direction of the dominant Christian faiths in American today. She especially points out the self-serving nature of Catholic and evangelical Christian religions and their neglect of the social gospel.
Book Description
Thomas Merton was the most popular proponent of the Christian contemplative tradition in the twentieth century. Now, for the first time, some of his most lyrical and prayerful writings have been arranged into
A Book of Hours, a rich resource for daily prayer and contemplation that imitates the increasingly popular ancient monastic practice of "praying the hours". Editor Kathleen Deignan mined Merton's voluminous writings, arranging prayers for Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Dark for each of the days of the week.
A Book of Hours allows for a slice of monastic contemplation in the midst of hectic modern life, with psalms, prayers, readings, and reflections.
Customer Reviews:
Not Just for Merton Lovers.......2007-09-14
This is a marvelous collection of writings from the works of Thomas Merton, the Trappist Monk, assembled in the form of a book of hours. Even if you are not particularly knowledgable about Merton's writings, you will find his comments on so many aspects of the spiritual life meaningful and tantalizing, you will want to study his works further. The author does include an index that gives the source of each selection included for the particular time and day of the week. Although he lived from 1915 - 1968, you will feel he is writing for right now. Included are writings for Dawn, Day, Dusk and Dark on each day of the week. You might think that only seven days would not be enough to keep you interested. But, as with much of Holy Scripture, something new and fresh appears with repetition. The author includes an informed introduction to her selections for Thomas Merton: A Book of Hours.
Pray Thomas Merton!.......2007-09-12
A fantastic Book of Hours from the writings of Thomas Merton, which includes passages from his poetry and other writings not encountered by those who have read his journals or his most popular books. This was a new side of Merton for me, and I found it to be wonderful. The prayers and readings in this book reflect new areas of encounter with God that I had not experienced in his writing before. Highly recommended!
Awsome book of prayers.......2007-08-12
Several friends have received this book and were recommending others to get a copy, so I purchased one, took it on retreat and another person has also purchased one as well. word of mouth, on this book.
Meditation and Prayer.......2007-06-13
Many of us get so busy each day that when we try to pray or meditate, the world crowds in on us. This book is simply a guide to meditation and prayer and has been a Godsend to me.
A Great Book for a Great Practice.......2007-06-09
Merton's book is a though-and-Spririt-provoking guide for a week of prayers and meditations on the daily hours - dawn, day, dusk, dark. I especially appreciated the thoughtful and helpful Introduction, orienting the the reader to Mertin and the practice of praying the stations. Sad to say, this is a practice that has largely left the protestant world -- to our diminishment, I believe.
I recommend the practice and this book as an inspiring guide to developing a richer prayer life and a closer relationship with God.

Good Overall Reference.......2007-10-08
I purchased this book looking for a book that had a good overall reference many of the common tests that doctors run for diagonistic purposes. Based on my knowledge of medicine I didnt want something that was overly technical but enough where there was a good balance of explanation and medical terminology. This book is great for those that have a decent level of medical knowledge but it is not so technical where you have needed to go to medical school to understand it. It also is organized into different areas and or can be easily referenced through the index and cross-references. I would recomend this book if you have somewhat of a working level of medical knowledge all the way up to a nursing student etc.

love it.......2007-04-28
checked this out from the library, but had to purchase it! first of all, i knew NOTHING about gardening, so this gave me a starting point and help with the basics. i am slowly learning ... and have started my first vegetable garden! while there are very FEW pictures, the info itself was valuable to me. i have a book that is chock-full of pics, but the text is designed for a novice or advanced gardener. i love to look at that (other) book, but i needed something very basic to begin with- and this is it! good price for all the info you get. a must for those just starting out from scratch! good luck & have fun with your hands in the dirt!

Great Bible for young readers.......2007-10-10
Great product, I bought these as a graduation gift for out pre-k who were moving up into the elementary class.
Perfect for 7 year old boy........2005-09-02
I wanted a leather bound Bible for my 7 year old boy that wasn't too childish, but that had large print. He always balks at even a 10pt. font size. It also had to be the NIRV translation. Not too picky, huh? This was the perfect fit. There are 10 or 15 full page pictures spread throughout the Bible, but that is about it. I was glad that this Bible was free from those annoying cartoony devotions that kids never read anyway. He is not embarrassed to carry it around because it has a plain navy blue cover, no obnoxious cartoons.
