Book Description

When a horrifying attack leaves one of the four members of the Women's Murder Club struggling for her life, the others fight to keep a madman behind bars before anyone else is hurt. And Lindsay Boxer and her new partner in the San Francisco police department run flat-out to stop a series of kidnappings that has electrified the city: children are being plucked off the streets together with their nannies-- but the kidnappers aren't demanding ransom. Amid uncertainty and rising panic, Lindsay juggles the possibility of a new love with an unsolvable investigation, and the knowledge that one member of the club could be on the brink of death. And just when everything appears momentarily under control, the case takes a terrifying turn, putting an entire city in lethal danger. Lindsay must make a choice she never dreamed she'd face--with no certainty that either outcome has more than a prayer of success.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-06

You must read this book, it is one of Patterson's finest. I personally prefer the books he writes alone to the ones he cowrites, they aren't near as fine. This one is though and you won't be able to put it down.

2 out of 5 stars Pull-up! Pull-Up!.......2007-10-02

While a huge Patterson fan, this book was disappointing. We get three half-formed antagonists and a shiftless plot. More alarming, the ratio of mystery to melodrama is starting to head in the same direction that Patricia Cornwell did--not a positive development.

1st to Die was a taut, well-paced, page-turner. Sadly, this one seemed kinda tired and formulaic.

2 out of 5 stars What was the point?.......2007-09-15

I kept waiting for the 3 storylines to somehow come together and they never did. Usually I read Patterson in 2 days and this one took me 2 months! Let's start writing alone again James!

2 out of 5 stars 6th target.......2007-09-15

I agree with the other reviews. I was eagerly waiting for the next instalment of the murder club and I wanted to throw the book across the room in disgust. Where was the excitement, the suspense - the feeling that you can't put the book down until you know. James Patterson re-read the first 4 books and give us something the rivals those books or don't bother.

1 out of 5 stars Patterson doesn't deliver with The 6th Target.......2007-09-03

This was, in my opinion, the worst Patterson book I've read...and I've read almost all of them. He is putting out so many books with so many co-authors lately, I doubt he has time to read or edit them thoroughly. He's too busy counting his money. Jokes aside, The 6th Target is not worth the time or money!

Book Description

Whether they are corporate professionals, budding entrepreneurs, or they own a home business, most people are looking to achieve more in less time, while earning enough money to live comfortably. This book reveals the proven techniques thousands of people have used to attain all of the money they wanted while living healthy, happy and balanced lives. The Power of Focus, the new blockbuster from the coauthors of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul, is a practical no-nonsense guide that shows readers how to reach their business, personal and financial goals without getting burned out in the process. Canfield, Hansen, and Hewitt have taken the best ideas from their own successful careers (seventy-nine years of combined business expertise), and distilled them into ten powerful focusing principles. The result is a treasury of insights that is enjoyable to read and easy to understand. At the outset, the book identifies the three most important fundamentals for consistent success: developing unusual clarity; understanding that habits determine your future; and using a "no exceptions policy" approach to focus on what you want. Numerous anecdotes and inspiring stories help to reinforce each principle. This is a must-read for business people, sales managers, entrepreneurs, and anyone who is serious about improving their personal awareness.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent read - with great explanations..........2007-10-13

If you are new to life planning, dont miss this book. I had done over 80% of the things indicated in the book, yet I found the book very enjoyable.

The thing I liked most was that the book lets you interact with it. There is plenty of space for you to do the exercises and write down your answers. Dont worry about right or wrong.

If you are serious about making the book work for you, you must follow the instructions. After reading the book, skim through it again; if your handwriting does not show on at least 30% of the pages, you have not done what you were supposed to do. In that case you will derive only a fraction of the true benefits it has to offer.

Learn, enjoy, and succeed - who knows what you will be in the next

Amazing! I felt like that book was written just for me.

On page 14 they explain how to identify bad habits by listing 26 habits that hold you back. I had 24 of the 26 bad habits!

Now that I'm able to focus effectively, LIFE IS GREAT!

I have not completed the book yet but what I have read so far has been excellent and I have put into practice the ideas presented. I especially like the interactive study questions in each chapter. I would highly recommend this book for everyone who has their own business or is thinking about starting their own business

4 out of 5 stars Great book for entrepreneurs.......2007-08-09

The creators of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, have teamed up with top performance coach Les Hewitt to create The Power of Focus, a step-by-step guide to making your dreams become reality and creating the life you want.

In order to get the most out of the information in this book, one must first realize this: "Success takes effort and consistent, focused activity." (quoted directly from the book)

In a nutshell, that's essentially what the book is all about, and it is only worth reading if one understands and agrees with that statement and is willing to put it into action. The "Power of Focus" is not something to just read and then think about; it is a set of instructions for doing the things necessary to achieve your goals

Each chapter describes specific strategies and techniques, and includes motivating stories about real people who have implemented and succeeded with those techniques. At the end of the chapter is a set of Action Steps, which condenses the strategies into an easy-to-follow instructional format. In addition to a well laid action plan for success, the book also provides loads of suggestions for additional reading to help keep one motivated and continuously learning. All in all, "The Power of Focus" is easy to read and understand, and is quite motivational as well.

While the book seems to be geared toward self-starters, business owners, entrepreneurs and the like, there is something of value in it for everyone. Most, if not all, of the techniques described in this book could be used with respect to any goal, be it business, financial, or personal. For someone who is stuck in any aspect of life and not sure how to effect change, reading and implementing the techniques defined in "The Power of Focus" could definitely help.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Focus: How to Hit Your Business, Personal and Financial Targets with Absolute Certainty.......2007-06-11

Very helpful book. For years I had thought that I was "flying by the seat of my pants" in my private practice. This book helped me plan and carry out a business structure that really works for me. I attend to many different areas (personal, health, relationship, contribution, etc.) in my life with direction. I have been using the methods in the book for four months now and it has changed my life. I have given this book as a birthday gift to my very good friend and my wife.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars it's still the ultimate toxicology book.......2007-09-09

there is not that much to say, really. Casarett & Doull's Tox book has been THE toxicology textbook for the past years. This edition has a few additions and changes, but not that many, so older editions are still worthwhile. However, anyone in the environmental science field, toxicology, carcinogenesis or related subjects, you should have this as a reference book. period.

1 out of 5 stars Hopeless.......2007-06-12

As a doctoral graduate in toxicology and now a practicing preclinical toxicologist for several years, I rate this book not only as "poor", but poorer with each new edition.

Consider Goodman & Gilman's Pharmacology. Like C&D, it is a text with nearly as many authors as chapters, and covers diverse subject material. UNlike G&G, though, Casarett & Doull's painfully lacks the editorial wisdom, guidance, and "tie-together" of the exceedingly disparate chapters. As a result, there is a lot of overlap, and a lot of gaps.

In case you graduate students haven't figured it out, this book is essentially the manual for the ABT cert exam. In my opinion, that is the only thing keeping it in print. Otherwise most of us in practice would have a book that covers chapter 6, and then separate references for our area of work. As a preclinical toxicologist, for example, I couldn't give two hoots in hell about air pollution or toxic effects of plants.

5 out of 5 stars If you can only buy 1 toxicology reference, make it this one.......2004-08-25

I found this to be an outstanding and thorough treatment of the entire gamut of toxicology. The book is well organized, with a very logical sequence of chapters. Each chapter is authored by recognized experts in the various subspecialties of toxicology, such as neurotoxicology. The principles and model systems of each specialty are discussed in detail. This text contains no fluff. I recommend it for graduate level students and above, though ambitious undergraduates may find it useful as well. My only suggestions for improvement would be updated figures and a glossary of terms. I sometimes found that authors of the earlier chapters would use terms which were not defined until later chapters. Overall, this is an excellent reference--well worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars errors in the book.......2004-04-27

That is a good book for the beginner of toxicologist. However, many existed errors may mislead and confuse the beginners. So I recommend that we'd wait for next edition.

1 out of 5 stars Many errors.......2004-04-27

That is a really good book for the beginer of toxicologist. However, there are many errors existed and those errors could mislead and confuse the beginer. I think that we'd better wait for next editions.

Book Description

Sara Michaels is the daughter of a prominent senator who has just announced his candidacy for President of the United States--the same senator who has been receiving death threats against his family.

Sara Michaels is also the owner of a self-help clinic and is hell-bent--despite the FBI's warnings--on leading a group of ten women on a two-week sojourn through the Rocky Mountains.

In an effort to protect Sara, the FBI recruits homicide detective Jaime Hutchinson to infiltrate the group and secretly provide the protection they are so certain Sara will need. After some clever maneuvering, Jaime finds herself welcomed by the ten conservative women--who soon begin playing matchmaker with Sara and Jaime.
But then Jaime is reminded of the reason that she has joined this group of women when she's forced to lead them out of the mountains and away from a sniper's bullets.

Will Sara finally figure out who is behind the death threats? And will Jaime realize the truth--and be able to save Sara before it's too late?

3 out of 5 stars Fun action.......2007-09-20

I'd read one other Gerri Hill book before I picked up this one, and I was hesitant to read another because of the weaknesses I perceived in it, but I was caught without a book to read and a limited selection to choose from on the bookshelf. Another reviewer says that you have to be willing to put up with the mundane in order to get to the good stuff with this author, and I can really relate after reading this book.

It wasn't perfect, but I liked the set up, the setting, the action was serious enough, but also didn't rely on jumped-to conclusions or deus ex machina type endings for the characters to triumph (like I felt Hunter's Way relied too heavily upon). Perhaps there could have been more heat, but I liked all the characters, I liked the adventure, the writing was solid, as was the editing, making this an enjoyable read. Plus, I'm a sucker for books where the characters are going places and doing things that seem interesting, like the hiking and psychological awakenings in this outing. Well worth the read. On the strength of this outing, I will give more of Gerri Hill's offerings a try.

5 out of 5 stars She's Outdone Herself --- Again.......2007-08-22

I confess, I'm a raving lunatic fan when it comes to Gerri Hill, my all-time favorite author. IMO "The Target" surpasses "The Killing Room" as her best romance/adventure story. It's that good, and here's why:

The descriptions of the Colorado Rockies are so crisp and vivid that I felt like I was there. This provides a lifelike backdrop for the spine-tingling action that takes place. Both of the main protagonists are uncommon women in uncommon circumstances --- just what's needed for interesting interaction between them as they face a scary variety of crises. It also lets the author develop her characters using the `show, don't tell' technique, so we get to watch their reactions to different types of situations, rather than being given lengthy recitations of their inner thoughts or past histories. As a result I felt like I was right there, sweaty palms and all, with Jaime and Sara. The plot had so many twists and turns that I was guessing about the outcome (usually incorrectly) all the way to the end.

I wonder if Hill will outdo herself again in her next book. I can't imagine it, but I'm anxious to find out.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect but Pretty Good.......2007-08-19

Although stories of high ranking politicians, their relatives, and FBI agents are getting a little worn out, Gerri Hill does a pretty good job with this one. It's an interesting variation on Jasmine Cresswell's theme in "Final Justice" where the woman's father was a former US Vice President (but with a different ultimate villain).

The first half of the book seemed to drag, but the magnificent descriptions of the Colorado wilderness made up for it. Nevertheless, I'm hoping for more plot/action in her forthcoming books. I couldn't help rolling my eyes at the ongoing thread about the group of straight women who are not only totally accepting of the two lesbian protagonists, but actually drawn in by the charisma of one of them and end up becoming matchmakers for the pair. I love escapist fantasy, but that's a bit over the top for me.

This book wasn't her best, but I still enjoyed it because she writes so well. I'm a big fan of Gerri Hill, and she remains one of my favorite authors.

5 out of 5 stars The Target.......2007-08-02

Gerri Hill is an excellent writer. This book was exciting and kept me reading from beginning to end. I really enjoyed it. Great love and suspense storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Geri Hill...Outstanding!.......2007-07-20

I fell in love with Geri Hill when I read "Dawn of Change".
She had never disappoints me.
I do think that she relies on nature to provide ther antagonist.
I will go out of my way to purchase her books.

5 out of 5 stars good job breaking down the steps of writing.......2007-07-19

Great ideas for beginning writers in terms of organization. Breaks down the steps simply. Explains what makes interesting writing.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT resource!.......2007-05-09

I have used this book with my own lessons and bought it for all the 2-5 teachers in my building. Very user friendly. Has great ideas for mini-lessons and wonderful resources to copy for students to keep in their wirters' notebooks. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Makes writing seem easy!.......2007-01-16

This book is aimed toward older students, grades 3-8, but I have 2nd graders. Another teacher at my school recommended it, so I gave it a try. While not every lesson is appropriate for my grade level, a lot of it is. I especially like how there is a mini-play (2 or 3 minutes) to go along with the lessons. My students love the section of word choice, where there is a play of Strong Verb vs Weak Verb (like a boxing match). It has reproducible reference sheets for the students to use for transition words, color words, strong verbs, etc. These are great to add to a writing folder. I can't imagine how great this would be for the intermediate grades. Great resource! Especially when you aren't given much of a guideline on how to teach writing!

5 out of 5 stars The Best for teaching writing.......2007-01-14

I work in a sixth grade classroom with second-language learners. This book is the best. I showed it to my fifth grade colleague, and he bought it. What is great about this book is that it has lists of words you can give to the kids such as strong verbs or sight words or transition words. It has wonderful teacher sheets to copy for teaching mini lessons. I used many of her ideas such as show/don't tell, or teaching similes or teaching dialogue. Seriously was not a book that I put on the shelf and rarely looked at. It's hard buying a book and not being able to thumb through it, but I tell you that you won't be disappointed with this one!

4 out of 5 stars An Okay Read.......2007-07-06

I have read several of the reviews and everyone has their own thoughts but I liked the book but not as much as The Maze. I think I liked the humor and romance between Sherlock and Savage more than the characters in The Target. One Reviewer talked about Ramsey being obsessed with Emma and even said he touched her too much and etc. I didn't see that. He saw her at the worse time right after she had been beaten and abused by this horrible person. I thought he handled it well, gaining her trust and protecting her. If police and therapists had been brought into it at the beginning, she would probably have been more terrified. Ramsey and Molly did seek professional help later. I thought the author's idea for Ramsey was a sensitive caring man and he was devastated by the ordeal of Emma. He indeed did love her and was protective of this little girl who had been wonded physically and mentally. I think Ramsey did love Molly but the author leaves you thinking he marries her just to get Emma, but still think he was in love with her and she him. I have noticed in Catherine Coulter books, she seldom has the romantic characters say "I love you". I kept looking for it in "The Maze" and believe I saw it once from Sherlock. The characters have other ways of dipicting they love the other person but kept wondering why they doen't just say it. Interesting! If I had a problem with the book was a Federal Judge being able to accept the Crime Lord's way of killing and getting away with it. I'm sure that is the way of real life but I had a hard time dealing with that. However, I found the book a "Thriller" and kept my attention from the beginning to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-01-16

This book had a refreashing plot. It keep you thinking. But,I really don't think men are that mesmerised by a woman that easily. I give them more credit than that. I received it in great shape.

4 out of 5 stars Touching.......2006-10-10

I just finished the hardback version of this novel (and because it is the only Catherine Coulter book that I have ever read) I thought I would check out what she has going on Amazon. Admitted, I cannot compare it to her other "better" works, but I must say that I found this book to be very touching. I'm actually very surprised at some of the reviews that I have read of this book.

I won't rewrite a synopsis as this has already been done below but I do have several issues in support of this book to point out to other readers.

There is a tad of the unbelievable in the fact that Ramsey didn't immediately take the child that he found to a hospital; but that is a sign of our too cynical hearts. The reason that it is unbelievable is because most people would be afraid of the consequences of being blamed for molesting her themselves and would therefore have immediately turned her over to the nearest "authorities", felt sorry for her and been done with it. But that is not the nature of the "hero" of this story.

What makes this understandable is the fact that Ramsey is a federal judge who knows very well the system that Emma would be going into once he turned her over. As a federal judge he IS one of the "authority figures" and immediately takes responsibility of a child whose situation has touched his heart. He feels that he is more capable of being sensitive to her situation and caring for her than would male complete strangers in some podunk town in the Rockies. [I don't know about any of you readers - but have you ever had to deal with sheriffs in small rural towns on sensitive sexual issues of rape involving children? Guarantied that most of the people involved would be men, and loud, and insensitive to the fear they inspire in the child just by being men. Just imagine how much more trauma could be caused by this to a child.]

Now, you may then bring up the point that as a federal judge he would know about things like destroying bodily evidence from the child when he bathed her, etc. instead of taking her directly to a medical facility. Remember another thing, they were in a very rural, very isolated location with no phone and Ramsey Hunt was in seclusion over what he claimed was the paparazzi chasing him after having to kill some drug dealers in his courtroom. But in reality he is having nightmares, etc. of guilt over having taken a life and doesn't feel good about being considered a hero because he lost it to his anger and killed someone. He was also having feelings of impotence over the fact that because the system was so overcrowded criminals would walk free in too short of a time period anyway. Emma's situation was one he had control over. He felt that he could do a better job than the local authorities who would hurt her feelings and didn't want to turn over the responsibility of her too quickly.

As for the comments about him being almost as sickly obsessed with Emma as the pedophile - again I must point to too cynical hearts. Have any of you ever been exposed to a truly caring male? Not a homosexual with feminine tendencies but a heterosexual man with a caring soft heart? I feel sorry for our society if you haven't. I have. I was raised by one. I was married to one. I have uncles and cousins who are just as family oriented and nurturing - who take on half the care of the kids especially if their wife is pregnant again. Who would be just as outraged to their souls by what happened to that child as Ramsey Hunt's character is. Who may be just as deadly and want to take care of it on their own. (my late husband was a professional martial artist)

Especially if it's a male Cancerian and Ramsey Hunt's character reads like a male cancerian. A male cancerian would be capable of taking a look at a poor, beautiful, abused baby and adopting her. He'd want to be her father and take her in, want to care for her, "mother" her in a male fashion, feel responsible and think that no one would be able to do the job as well as he would himself. He'd take over her life and would then extend that love to her mother. (I remember a male friend telling me once that the way some men find their mates is that they see a beautiful child and then want to meet its mother because the woman who produced such beauty had to "fine" herself.)

So he never says "I love you" to Molly but he does admit, as far as he is capable, that he more than likes her. He comes to appreciate her qualities as a unique person and begins to picture them as a family. He shows her how he feels in his actions towards Emma and Molly. He takes them in and takes them over and nurtures them and lets himself be mothered by the women in his life at the same time. It's typical cancerian.

As for Molly, she comes to appreciate him and his strength and his love for her daughter. He's a handsome, caring, successful, strong, man who will care for her and protect her without patronizing or smothering her. What sane woman would pass that up? She doesn't need money she's rich. What she needed he provided. It's a formula for successful marriage more enduring than the raw "passion" of most romance novels. It's a love story of a family who comes together and of love that grows between them after they have come to appreciate one another, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

I found this book to be very touching. It left me with a bittersweet smile on my face for them as a new family and for the road that Emma would have to travel in life in order to be whole again. The mystery surrounding who was really behind the plots, them on the run, and the chase for the child molester, etc. was pretty good and kept the pages turning. Other commentators were right - it wasn't the most suspenseful book that I've read but it was a very good read. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Any other comments I make would be spoilers - and I hate spoilers. So I will leave you with a strong recommendation for this book as I really enjoyed it. The male character is not the typical stubborn, brooding Alpha man but caring and sensitive while still being strong and decisive. I will definitely be looking into more of Catherine Coulter's books. Ciao.

1 out of 5 stars Yeah . . . not even gonna finish this one.......2006-08-28

I haven't read the two preceding books, but I sincerely hope that they are better than this one. I'd like to think that a federal judge would have better sense than to keep an obviously raped 6 year old in the woods for a week "until she learns to trust him." Meanwhile, her poor mother is searching town after town with no indication from him that she is even alive. I feel very doubtful that said mother, on discovery of the man with her suddenly verbal child, would say to him, "I would have done the same thing in your shoes." Even knowing that he wasn't the original kidnapper, I'm pretty sure I would have sent my daughter out of the room and shot him anyway.

No thanks to Ramsey, the kid hasn't died from internal injuries, and now that the mother (who is far, far more clever than every incompetent law enforcement agent in Colorado) followed the only solid lead that the police "blew off" and is back with her daughter, I think I'll leave them to go on the run without me.

Lazy writing -- it wouldn't have been hard to create a situation where Ramsey and the child together made sense.

5 out of 5 stars Target Is Right On Target.......2006-07-23

It has been several years since I read this in hardcover edition but I have always thought it was one of Coulter's best. I'll admit it is not as suspenseful as The Maze but then what book is. I think some of the tender scenes between the child and the adult characters in this book give us an intimacy and a very admirable picture of the love and generosity of the main characters. So what if the last 50 to 100 pages was not as suspenseful as some would like.

Book Description

New research suggests that most back pain is caused by underdeveloped multifidus muscles, those that connect the spinal vertebrae and are crucial in bending the back. This book presents exercises to strengthen the multifidus group. Simple explanations and black-and-white drawings throughout show readers how to work with these muscles.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable... a borderline miracle.... 10++ stars.......2007-10-13

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! I had back surgery 2 years ago (L1-L2 thru L3-L4 lumbar diskectomy) to relieve severe lower back pain and sciatica pain in the left leg. Although the surgery relieved the sciatica, regularly every 4-6 weeks I subsequently had recurring "episodes" which took 2-3 weeks to subside. I was walking, swimming, stretching, etc., all to no avail. Skelaxin and Mobic became my best friends during this period. A random Google search turned up this book by Jim Johnson (and the excellent 8/23/06 Amazon review by G. Brennan of LA,CA), and I decided "what the hell".... Bottom Line: It works. Period. I bought 2.5 lb. ankle weights, do the recommended exercises < 10 minutes/day every day, and 3-4 weeks later, my back pain has disappeared and the numbness in my left heel has disappeared 80%. BUY THIS BOOK. IT'LL BE THE BEST $10 YOU HAVE EVER SPENT IN YOUR LIFE.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2007-08-24

I have been doing the exercises for 2 months. My lower back pain has not completely gone away, but has been greatly reduced. Best $10 I have spent in a long time...

5 out of 5 stars Info my physical therapist did not give me!.......2007-07-19

I've been struggling with lower back problems for almost a year. Had an MRI that showed a bulging disc, but my symptoms didn't match that location. Had physical therapy (most of it made me worse), finally had a steriod injection that decreased the inflammation and eliminated the pain (although it is supposed to be temporary). No one (Doctor or therapists) seemed all that interested in helping me determine what to do to prevent a recurrence. I purchased several books -- this one was very helpful (although his focus is on just this one muscle) and I do believe the exercises are strengthing my back. Also helpful was one of the Robin McKenzie books. By combining these two approaches, I think I'm well on my way to preventing another painful flare-up.
I found his explanations of how the back works and his discussion of the research (upon which he bases his approach) to be enlightening.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book, even with the strange title.......2007-05-28

Well it is a strange title. But if you are one of the 80% of Americans who suffer from back pain, this is a very worthwhile quick read. It's 120 pages and can be finished in 60 to 90 minutes. The Multifidus Back Pain Solution... is really more of a booklet then a book. It covers the basic physiology of the back, as well as common types of back problems and many of the treatments that are used. And then offers a simple program which has shown proven results.

The multifidus is a little-known set of muscles that connect the vertebrae. The thesis of author Jim Johnson, who is a physical therapist, is that strengthening these muscles will help many people who suffer from back pain to either (1) have less pain when they have episodes of back pain or (2) have fewer back pain episodes or (3) have a happy combination of (1) and (2). Johnson backs up his thesis based on research (that is ongoing) from quite a number of back pain studies.

As a person whose own back pain problems have been reduced dramatically in the last three plus years by using a nautilus back machine (that's designed to strengthen all the muscles running along the spinal vertabrae), I am sure Johnson is on to something.

The exercises Johnson suggests are simple to do, require no machines or weights (well, small ankle weights can be used), and take very little time. I am going to incorporate them into my own gym time, on days when I'm not using the nautilus back machine.

The author admits his program will not work for everyone, but it does help the majority of people in his own practice and in the scientific studies.

DEFINITELY worth the small investment of time and money to get and read this book if you have a back problem.

5 out of 5 stars A surprising one-exercise program for back pain relief........2007-04-26

Jim Johnson stopped looking for causes of chronic back pain after researching the studies on the subject. Scientific studies don't support the common theories about what causes chronic back pain. Many people without pain live happily not knowing that they have back conditions usually treated with surgery.

Johnson also found that people with pain usually have weakened multifidus muscles. Those without pain usually don't. So, instead of looking for causes, Johnson recommends that patients initially work to strengthen their multifidus muscles. These muscles weave around your spine from your neck to your low back. Their location on your spine indicates their importance to your back health. Johnson describes three different exercises that target the multifidus. He lets the reader choose the one that they prefer to do.

Most physical therapists recommend multiple exercises for chronic back pain. That shotgun approach can be effective if followed. But patient compliance drops as programs get more complex. Johnson's program requires performing only one exercise. Yet most of his patients improve or completely relieve their chronic back pain without any other treatment.

Johnson says most patients notice improvements within two weeks. If you don't improve within three months, try something else. He also acknowledges that his program is for chronic back pain: continuous or intermittent pain lasting for months. For acute pain, time heals better than any exercise program.

The book illustrates the exercises he recommends. Here is a basic description of them:

Johnson most highly recommends the "bird-dog" or opposite arm/leg extension. Start in an all-fours position on the floor. Raise one leg straight back and hold it up for a second, then lower. Alternate with the other leg. Work up to 20 repetitions with each leg or about two minutes of repetitions. Every other day or three times a week is enough. When that movement becomes easy, go to the next level by extending the opposite arm straight out while extending each leg. When that becomes easy, the final level is to add light weights to each arm and leg, depending upon your tolerance. Once you build up your strength, perform the exercise once a week to maintain it. You will find this exercise in many exercise books and on many websites. Alas, don't be alarmed that they all prescribe different "hold" times, number of repetitions, and other adjustments. Johnson explains why the pattern he describes should work fine for you.

The second exercise is commonly known as the prone or facedown extension. Lie on your stomach. Lift one leg straight up about 6 inches and hold for a second. Lower and repeat with the other leg. Work up to the same frequency and number of repetitions as the first exercise. When the exercise becomes easy, add light weights. Do this exercise if you can't do the first one.

The third exercise can be done sitting or standing. While exhaling, simply pull your stomach muscles in as tight as you can and hold them for a few seconds. Work up to 20 repetitions. This can be done daily. This exercise is for those unable to do one of the other two exercises.

Jim Johnson writes short convincing books. He presents simple self-care solutions. Do you want to avoid surgery, prescription drugs, supplements, pricey equipment, and complicated workout routines? Then try Jim Johnson's books for what ails you. If you have knee problems, look up his knee book on Amazon. He also has a book on treating your rotator cuff. Creating good health can sometimes be surprisingly simple.

3 out of 5 stars General info.......2007-10-03

This book does a really good job at being a GENERAL reference guide. A buyer will likely be a bit disappointed if the purchase of this book is being considered for a specific information. For example: You could not help buying a surplus nagant revolver or mauser 71/84. Now you're wanting to get Info on cooking up some Ammo. You'll not find any helpful data or deminsional drawings (except for very common cartridges) You'll get a bit of (not entirely unbiased) history that you already knew, a little load/ballistic data that you'd be better going to a loading manual for.

The organization is in such a manner that is difficult to find a certain cartridge. In fact, I would say that it's been over organized to the point that complication smites simplicity.. On the plus; I've never not found a round that I was looking for after some searching.

If you'll be doing a lot of work around ammunition This is a good buy, as general and random as it is, that you'll be cracking open again and again.

I purchased this book in conjunction with another book, not knowing wich would better suit my needs. If I had to choose I'd keep the other, "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" Check the reviews to help in making a selection if you havn't already.

5 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Reloading Guide.......2007-04-10

This review of commercially-manufactured cartridges will teach you about the history of firearms and introduce you to some unusual types.

3 out of 5 stars Decent reference work.......2007-03-13

This book is a generally decent review of most of the commercially manufactured cartridges of the world, plus good sections on obsolete, military and wildcat cartridges. It's a good first resource for finding basic information about specific cartridges and serves as a starting point for further research.

The wildcat section is interesting and has tidbits about some of the most unusual cartridges but there was a total lack of discussion of the plethora of 20 caliber wildcats available. No mention was made of the 20 Tactical or 20 Vartarg, or several other fairly popular 20 caliber wildcats. Yet four major bullet manufacturers make a range of bullet sizes in this dimension and several quasi-custom rifle makers chamber rifles in these calibers. I found this annoying that while considerable space was "wasted" on 10 to 14 caliber cartridges, which virtually no one except a few individuals make bullets or arms for, no space was allocated to the 20 calibers which are rapidly gaining popularity. It's a pretty large oversight.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Toolkit to Avoid Failure.......2007-03-25

f I were in a bookstore, I never would have bought this book. It's coated thick with superlatives and overpromises of success like:

A foolproof road map to success. Don't grow your business without it.

Nothing is a foolproof road map to success. That statement would have made me distrust the book from the outset.

As it was, I ordered the book from Amazon which meant I read the Amazon recommendations before the cover of the book. As you can see, I gave this a 4 star rating - so I obviously enjoyed it.

My 4 stars came from three qualities of this book.

1. It's concise - business books love to over-explain or try to micromanage their readers. Be the Elephant is less than 220 pages.

2. It provides tools - There are more than a few very helpful, simple tools for business analysis that I began using before finishing the book.

3. Website - the book is backed up by a website that has templates for the tools.

All in all, the book is built to quickly give people necessary tools to avoid failure. The tools don't guarantee success, but they go a long way to helping you avoid failure while also avoiding analysis paralysis.

So, even though I apparently don't recommend the cover quotes, the book is an excellent toolkit for small business owners.

5 out of 5 stars "Be the Elephant"- Another Kaplan Must Read.......2007-03-13

"Be the Elephant" was even more enjoyable and more impactful than Mr.Kaplan's first book, "Bag the Elephant".

Being a marketer of promotional/advertising programming, within the CPG industry, I found Mr. Kaplan's writings to be right on target! I have utilized a few of his marketing ideas and sales tools, which have assisted me greatly in closing some huge deals within the CPG industry.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn effective sales techniques, in order to land and keep BIG clients! I can't wait for Mr. Kaplans next Elephant book to be published, as his books have given me the knowledge, tools and confidence to improve my chances of landing and keeping major accounts within the CPG industry.

5 out of 5 stars Be the Elephant: Build a Bigger ,Better Business.......2007-02-24

In following Steve's easy to follow steps in his First book to" Bag the elephant, we bagged our first elephant, and have now in the last year and a half bagged 4 more.

In the "Be the Elephant" book I was glad to find out that we have been doing many of the things that Steve recommends to build a bigger ,better business. One of our mottos here at my company is that we need to Grow or we will die. We have increased our Sales 6 fold and our Net Profit 11 fold in the last 7 years. Along the way we have increased our infrastructure to support the growth with qualified employees from outside the company, but with the first choice being and employee to promote from within.

We have increased our revenues by Vertically selling more of our items within our existing accounts,ie: Packaging items to the accounts who were only buying Corrugated and Vice Versa, thereby being a One stop shop for the customers shipping supplies. We have grown horizontally into other geographic areas in the US with our new "Elephant "Customers which has been the best of both worlds for us.

Due to the new geographic area scenarios, we are evaluating if it is a good business decision to open up a Distribution Center in a new Geographic area by using Steve's Risk vs. Reward factor.

I have also implemented "Start it and Chart it" with great success.

I have monthly Manager Meetings where I now use Steve's chart, where we review progress reports and timelines that are attached. I find that now that people are accountable, and on the hook to perform, there is peer pressure on them to fulfill the task.

I am still working on creating a USP for my company.

My company formed Strategic Alliances 4 years ago with our major Vendors .It was put forth from the beginning of the growth process to these Vendors that the ones who partner with me in the beginning, will be the ones that I will be loyal to in return as we grow. My largest Vendors have grown from thousand of dollars a year back in 2003, to millions of dollars a year in 2007.

I feel we have been successful by building the organization with good people and developing there skills to best suit the job at hand. We have maintained steady growth and profitability by keeping" Service" at the forefront of our business model. We will get the Customer their product, when they want it. Also, making sure that as we get bigger our current customers will not see any decrease in service.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Motivating.......2007-02-18

With this book I WILL "Be The Elephant". As a small business owner, rarely have I read two books this descriptive and easy to read as Kaplan's 1st book, Bag the Elephant" and this follow up "Be the Elephant". This is a GREAT follow up but can certainly stand on its own. Wish there could be more. I feel I am attending a special instructional seminar on reaching success just for me. Keep them coming.

Book Description

In the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, Scott Ritter's War on Iraq was embraced by the antiwar movement in America even though his claims that Iraq had been effectively disarmed were ignored by both the Bush administration and the mainstream media. In the wake of the debacle, Ritter has been vindicated. Now Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector, has set his sights on the White House's hyping of Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program. In Target Iran he once again sets the record straight.

This book offers Ritter's “national intelligence assessment” of the Iranian imbroglio. He examines the Bush administration's regime-change policy and the potential of Iran to threaten U.S. national security interests. The author also considers how the country is seen by other interested parties, including the United Kingdom (Tony Blair may once again be called upon by Bush to provide an international “cover” in any confrontation), Israel (the Israelis view Iran as their number one threat today), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (responsible for inspecting the alleged nuclear program).

3 out of 5 stars The story still goes on!.......2007-08-29

This book has many merits and is surely the best you can find if you are looking for a good overview of the Iranian nuclear issue up to the end of 2006. Included is the critical role of Israel, the US policy toward Tehran, the IAEA efforts (and some of its techniques) and many more. The problem is that the story is still going on and none knows how (and when) it will end. Thus I think it's rather premature to buy a book only for a synopsis of the US-Israel-Iran crisis, while new developments happen nearly every day. Mr Scott has also no comments on the possible "military solutions" (except a few lines stating that they will be catastrophic as a choice), something that I found disappointing to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-06-10

The subject matter is of increasing importance for Americans and the world. Mr. Ritter once again lays open the myths that surround another nation that is very misunderstood by the U.S. government and the people. As the U.S. moves closer and closer to a possible confrontation with Iran this book becomes increasingly important for Americans to be able to equip themselves with the facts so they can see through the rhetoric that is put forth by an increasingly hostile administration.

It is essential that we are not caught ignorant once again while this administration leads this country into another blunder in the Middle East. Mr. Ritter does an excellent job laying out what the international community has done to confront Iran's intransigence, and how the U.S. has hindered and complicated matters behind the scenes and publicly. His message once again seems prescient hopefully this time his warnings will be heeded, but the only way that will happen is if American's acquaint themselves with the facts so they won't succumb to the fear tactics yet again.

The main criticisms I have with this book is its choppy narrative and the lack of sources noted. The narrative seems to bounce around a lot which can be a little confusing at times. The lack of noting his sources becomes problematic when discussing the book or the issue because you can't point to Mr. Ritter's source and say that's where he gets his information. Mr. Ritter's earlier works gives him the credibility needed to pull this off, but for those that are die hard interventionists it would have helped to be able to see the sources.

These are the reasons I could not give this book five stars, but the importance of the subject makes this book a must read. I would certainly recommend this book to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Different nation, same US Foreign policy: Regime change.......2007-05-23

Just a few points to consider:
1. Iran was determined to have Nuclear capability by 2006.
2. Ahmadinejad is all bark, and no bite (literally, since he doesn't control Iran's nuclear forces and is NOT the man with the ultimate power in Iran, whic resides in the hands of Khamenie who has declared that the use of atomic bombs under any circumstances is not legitimate under Islam).

The book is well written and not only tells you about the politics involved, but also the technology of developing nuclear capability. The chapters are very long, and I noticed atleast twice that the publisher printed "Iraq" when the author meant to say "Iran" (see top of page 200)

More pics/maps would have been nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but read the conclusion first........2007-02-09

READ THE CONCLUSION AND POSTSCRIPT FIRST.
This is a very important book. Based on its rank in Amazon sales (in the 4000s or so), it's being purchased by quite a few people.
But there are only ten (ten) Amazon reviews. Only ten reviews of a book that gives authoritative, on-the-ground facts about Iran's nuclear capabilities.
Why so few Amazon reviews? Here's our guess. Readers get totally bogged down in the minutiae of weapons inspection, of Mossad spy disinformation, of EU vacillation, of the UN teetering on a Security Council resolution . . ..
But who reads the entire book? It's a total drudge read until you get to the CONCLUSION and POSTSCRIPT on pages 197-219. Those 22 pages tell the whole story.
We strongly recommend that you read these pages first. After you read the Conclusion and Postscript, then go back and read the knowledgeable detail in the first 196 pages. This is a great book, showing what's actually gone on, step by step, in the inspections done by Mohammed EI Baradei, IAEA Director, and his team.
The Iranians are nowhere close to having nuclear capabilities.
This is the conclusion of Scott Ritter, one of the men who took part in the Iraqi inspections, announced that Saddam had NO "weapons of mass destruction," and was completely ignored by a war-hungry Bush administration. And Scott Ritter was completely right. We went to war with Iraq for NO REASON AT ALL.
So, read the conclusion and the postscript first. Here he says with admirable clarity what others are saying--including Stephen Walt and John Mearsherimer (book forthcoming), James Petras, and Jimmy Carter.
We need to take back our country.
Israel and America are two separate countries. Iran is no danger to the US. It's Israel's problem (if it is a threat, which evidently it is not), but, as Ritter says, "Once again [as in Iraq], the world finds itself on the brink of another Middle East war in which the United States is using trumped-up charges centered around false threats of weapons of mass destruction. . ." ( p, 201) As Ritter shows, all these false threats are being orchestrated by Israel and its friends in the United States.
Israel itself has a formidable nuclear arsenal, uninspected by anybody--IAEA in particular. And they are not even members of the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty).
Ritter acknowledges Israel's feelings of paranoia, but points out that in this case those feelings will lead to its own destruction.
And what about the United States? What could be the outcome for the US of such a war? This is the most disturbing part of the book. Anyone who is familiar with the location of Iran knows that they are strategically placed to stop the flow of a great deal of the oil that reaches the West. Result? Our economy would grind to a miserable slowdown when the price of oil goes to $150-200 a barrel. Other results, equally horrifying, are described by Ritter.
Scott Ritter is a patriot who knows what he is talking about. He has all the credentials to be credible. We had better listen to him.
We'd better listen to him soon.
The word is out that an attack is being planned for this spring. Let's hope it's not true.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!.......2007-02-08

While the country debates the troop "surge" the administration and its Israeli "Ally" plan the next war right under our noses. Too bad there is such little discussion of this in the mainstream press.

Ritter's book is well written and authoratative.
