Intriguing and Suspenseful.......2007-08-28
This is the first Bullet Catcher paperback I've read and it intrigued me from the start. The notion of getting kidnapped for a thrill seemed unnatural to me, so I had to find out more. Then, Sage really gets into the act just to investigate what really happened to her roommate who supposedly committed suicide. As surprising as this was, the book only gets better with lots of suspense, a few steamy sex scenes, and some cooking thrown in for good measure. I don't think I'll ever look at a cannoli the same again. Ha-ha. A great read!

Roxanne St Claire once again proves she can work within a structure and create something new and different every time. She creates characters and gets you right into their heads. There's no way a reader can confuse any of her Bullet Catchers with another. I can't wait to meet them all.

I wanted to read something for a few minutes before bed, but this was the wrong choice!! Once I started TAKE ME TONIGHT, I could not put it down!! I was up until 1 am--4 hours past my usual bedtime, but I couldn't help it. The characters came alive for me from page one. I could totally relate to Sage, who is absolutely tenacious when it comes to getting at the truth. And Johnny--OMG! Who can't love a guy like that? A smart, sensitive hunk--and he cooks! During the suspense scenes (and there are a few), my heart pounded as I frantically read on. A totally good read and one I would recommend to anyone.
While I'm here, I'd like to remark on a comment left by another reviewer about Sage performing the "sexual service" in her effort to get information from Johnny. I can totally understand where she's coming from and under many circumstances, I would agree. But as I read on, that became much less of an issue for me. I could see that Sage's loyalty was so intense that she would do anything to discover the truth about her friend's murder.

While Roxanne does not introduce anything new to how to help a bank grow, she does bring many good ideas together, and express them in a straight forward and simple manner. It was interesting to read throught he book and identify things that we could be doing quite easily, but for reason we are not. Well written, simple, not revolutionary, but worth the time reading and using in planning sessions.

This book has beautiful food photography and of course Charlie Trotter is a Chicago treasure, however, the recipies are not for your in-a-hurry working person. Preparation is too elaborate. I need every day recipies, readily available ingredients and simple presentation. It's a bit intimidating.

After working in Relais Chateaus and fine french, Italian and Fine Eclectic fare restaurants, it was apparent that there were very high expectations to be met when presenting a plated item. Charlie Trotter and Roseann Klein have created a beautifully bound version of "Raw" food, Relais Gormand style. Fabulous photos of the finished plates and really detailed recipes, right down to the appendix of savory and succulent sauces, creams, cheeses and cracker recipes. I have created nearly everything in this book and the recipes are true to the photos, flavors are fabulous. If you want to create show stopping, 5 star cuisine that will keep your guests amazed, satiated with libations to salivate over, this is the book for you. Elegant and sophisticated. I just LOVE this book!.
Brilliant book!.......2007-08-24
When I first saw this book, I was slightly intimidated by some of the recipes - they seemed to have so many ingredients and different stages. I have since however prepared several of the dishes and the tastes are sublime and make the recipes well worth the effort! This is an excellent book and as about 70% of the food I eat is raw anyway, it gave me a huge number of new ideas for preparation and presentation.

If your looking for gourmet raw food preperation that takes multiple days and multiple steps to make 1 food dish than this book is for you. I found the recipes to be more work than the food was worth. I imagine the recipes would be fine for a gourmet person who spends a lot of time making raw food look good.

I like the pictures in this book and the details in the appendix, but the ingredients are either hard to find or expensive and the recipes are so complex. If I was to spend that much time making anything, I would want it to be a 5 course meal. I have had this book over a year and have never made a thing from it.

The book arrived about as timely as I would predict as far as snail mail goes. The quality of the book was poor. When I first opened it, I guess the binding glue was old and crusty because about pages 62-73 fell out.

Enjoyable Read.......2007-07-01
The first thing readers should realize is that even though this book is second in the Bullet Catcher series, it is also a stand alone novel. Well written romantic suspense. The only reason it didn't get five stars from me was that there were not enough red herrings in the plot, making the reveal predictable in my opinion. Romance was plentiful though for readers looking for a little more sex in their novels than the typical Romantic suspense.
Max Roper is given a difficult assignment; be the bodyguard for his ex-fiance. He hasn't seen her since she ran away claiming he killed her father and she would never forgive him. Yet, she wasted no time in finding herself a new extemely wealthy husband, who just happened to have died three months earlier leaving her a sizeable fortune and a great deal of power. It's Max's job not only to protect her from whomever is trying to threaten her, but to find out if she killed her husband. The only problem is that he isn't sure if he can get her to confide in him without getting too close in the process and opening up a world of emotions locked to the past. Someone wants her out of the way. Will Max be able to protect her, or will she suffer the same fate as her father?
Is it worth buying?
Yes. Either as part of the series or just for someone wanting to read a good contemporary romance novel. Suspense is carefully strung out to pull the reader along. Just don't expect a surprise ending. Hope that helps a little with the decision.

Wonderful read! Fast paced, starts right off and goes. Well written and edited. Sizzling romance. Gosh, the bigger and meaner they are, the bigger they fall. Glad these two got their lives back on tract. What a story. If you like bodyguard tough guys and girls that are not totally helpless, with action, thriller-type, mystery, drama and steamy scenes, you'll enjoy this easy to read book.

I'm not typically a romantic suspense fan, but this book wowed me! The characters are so easy to fall in love with, and the writing makes each scene easy to picture.

I'm always excited when I find a new author to add to my home library. Roxanne St. Claire can really tell a story. Her descriptions of the locations in the tale are vivid without being too wordy. Her characters are well developed and realistic. There is plenty of mystery and lots of fast- paced scenes to keep you turning the pages.
Alex has been assigned the duty of guarding a well- known news reporter. As a body guard among an elite team known as the 'Bullet Catchers', he takes his job seriously. When he arrives to take on his assigned task, he is surprised to find that his client has been replaced by her twin sister.
Jazz and her twin, Jess, are as different as night and day. While Jess is busy building her career as a famous anchorwoman, Jazz prefers risking her life as a private investigator. When Jess wants to take a week off at the news station to research a ground- breaking story, Jazz agrees to pretend she is her sister on the evening news. When Jazz arrives at her sister's apartment she is shocked to learn that she has a new body guard. The last thing Jazz wants or needs is a man following her around.
Over the following days, Alex and Jazz learn that Jess is in trouble. Until she is found, Alex has been reassigned to guarding Jazz in her sister's place. Jazz wants to follow every dangerous lead to her sister's whereabouts. Alex is determined to keep her from running straight into a trap. They make a pact to work together until Jess is saved. This book is a real page- turner. The only thing that made it a bit less enjoyable for me was the fact that Jazz's character was quite cold. She is jaded from a past relationship and will not bend when Alex tries to keep her safe. He compromises again and again in their search for Jess, but she insists upon doing everything her way... even to the point of taking unreasonable risks. She constantly disappears without warning, leaving Alex to frantically search for her. When their relationship progresses to "the next level", Jazz tells him that she only wants him for sex. It got to a point where I really could not like Jazz. I was wishing Alex had a woman with a bit more heart. Still, the story is definitely worth all 5 stars.

I enjoyed this "thriller type romance." It starts right off and goes. Lots of twists, suspense, not gory and gross stuff either. Bodyguard type romance with a twist. Well written and easy to read and follow without too much concentration. Nice read! Some steam, but not too much. I'm reading book 2 now.
Sensuality and red herrings galore.......2007-05-15
Miami reporter Jessica Adams is about to embark on the big time - a network anchor job in New York. But she stumbles upon a story and calls upon her twin sister Jasmine to take her place for a week while she gets the scoop of a lifetime. Jasmine is a former reporter turned tough as nails PI from California. Taking Jessica's place won't be so easy - especially since her boss hired a sexy hunk of a bodyguard to watch over "Jessica" after she received some menacing fan mail. Bullet catcher Alex Romero is not thrilled to be stuck babysitting, but his libido got in the way of his last assignment, so he is doing penance. He is able to tell right off that he has the wrong twin... where could Jessica be?
But things are not adding up, and when Jessica fails to call Jazz, Alex reluctantly agrees to help investigate, even though doing so could put his job at risk. He does not count on an intense attraction to Jazz, and soon the two are acting on the attraction, while trying to figure out who to trust.
St. Claire's first in the "Bullet Catcher" series (once again, I read them out of order) is a sensuous tale filled with snappy dialogue, red herrings, lots of suspects, and written with frenetic pacing, it keeps the reader glued. Followed by "Thrill me to Death" and "Take Me Tonight." If the first two books are any indication of the quality of the series, this reader will keep tuning in for more.

Alex Romero is given one assignment- to keep Jessica Adams safe, and stay out of her bed. What Alex didn't expect was her twin sister to be the one pretending to be Jessica. Jazz Adams is nothing like her sister the newscaster. She has spunk, and an overly eager sense of determination to find her missing sister, but who can she trust? Before Jessica disappeared, she asked Jazz to pretend to be her and to tell no one who she was. With only Alex on her side, the two must unravel the clues to find Jessica before it is too late.
As my first Roxanne St. Claire novel, it was a fairly decent read. The suspense held throughout the story line. I noticed how so many people mentioned the many twists and turns, I however, did not think they were as cleverly done. Maybe it is just that I read at least a book a day if not two with a good majority being mysteries, but it was a bit predictable to me. Maybe that's because there just weren't enough red herrings to really make the twist a shocker. Even with the predictability on my part though, it was a good romantic suspense. I look forward to reading the next in the bullet catcher series.

Yes, I do feel most people will enjoy this book.

I read this while at a conference in Arizona--hooked from the start. I ended up waterlogged from a too-long soak in the tub, skipped dinner, and sat in the back of the room pretending to pay attention to the seminars. Twins are normally a hard sell for me (since I have a set of my own) but this one didn't rely on the usual cliches.
Can't wait for the next on. Roxanne's done it again.

Decided to take up bluegill fishing as it is available in some nice places close to home. Thought flyfishing for them would be fun as I did that for trout over the years.
Searched for some sort of guide because I was the only fisherman in the US that never actually fished for or caught a bluegill.
This book on Amazon certainly had the right title, so I bought and read it, ebayed some suggested flies, went out to a beautiful reservoir, caught a bunch of bluegill and ate them.
This is an informal and informative little book with beautiful illustrations and mostly decent photos. It does focus mostly on the south and lower midwest. The north and west are, I think, a little different, but still the advice is good and the author's passion undeniable.

This work is an absolute joy to read and putter through. The writing is concise and is quite appropriate and helpful to the long time chaser of Bluegills as well as those just getting started. I have been after this particular species for well over fifty years now, and I learned quite a lot reading this even after all that time. The illustrations and photography are wonderful and add much to the narration. There are not many aspects of this sport not addressed in this work. I highly recommend you add this one to your collection.
A great addition to the fly fishing library........1999-06-12
This is an excellent book on blueguill fly fishing. There was only one bit of bad information in the whole book. The author makes the assertion that graphite rods are a far superior fly rod. This is a useless statement as it is presented. The bamboo rod could just as easily have this claim made for it by someone who is partial to that type of rod. This type of a statement is a sore spot for me, especially when no supporting data is provided.
Overall the book covers all situations and presents some classic and new bluegill fly patterns.

This book was found to be both informative and entertaining. The many techniques explainined help even the experienced bluegill fishermen catch more fish. The plates showing different bluegill fly patterns are all beautifully presented. The autors are great story tellers too.

Roxanne's Brewster books have always spoken directly to me and The Secret of Us is no different. The characters are so alive; I feel I've met them. I know these people with their very human struggles. I'm one of them. If Laurie were to knock on my door and invite me to scope out some new paintings at the local gallery, I would not be surprised. These folks live on in my heart far beyond the last page.
This book is like a primer on marriage. The Secret of Us paints a realistic portrait of two couples, one at the beginning of the journey and one much further along, who learn the secret to happiness in marriage. Henke's creative twists and turns in the storyline kept me wondering, much like the Ladies Home Journal article I used to read, "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" It's a gem!

Sometimes when a couple has been married several years, it becomes too easy to take one another for granted, assuming the other will just always be there. The demands of a job, family, friends and activities begin to take up so much time that the relationship between the married couple may take a backseat to almost everything else that life commands. This is what happened to Laura and Donnie Dunn after 23 years of marriage. While in the midst of planning daughter Stasha's wedding, Laura looks over at a sleeping Donnie and wonders who this person is, if he cares anymore, or even if she cares about him. They appear to have it all--a nice house, a prominent advertising agency and a 21-year-old daughter any parent would be proud of--but a meaningful and intimate relationship is nonexistent, both physically and mentally. It appears the easiest thing might be to just end the marriage and for each to move on to new lives, but that is not the plan God had in mind for us when a marriage partner becomes complacent.

Roxanne Henke has written a story about the importance of working to keep a marriage strong. Marriage is all about compromise, communicating, standing firm and giving in. It is also about love. While the story is fictional, its meaning is definitely true. Marriage encompasses so many wonderful things, and God has truly given couples a gift when it is treated with the sincerity He expects. I recommend this book to all adults who are in any way affected by the relationship of a married couple. The message is clear. While marriage is all about love for one another and making sacrifices, marriage is work. Marriage is hard work.
"The Secret of Us" is set up to be quite appropriate and beneficial for reading groups and their ensuing discussions.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Secret of Us." The portrayal of a long-standing marriage, as well as a newlywed marriage of those who work too much was very accurate, albeit sometimes painful. It was good that the book was written in three point-of-views so that it didn't just turn into a husband-bashing book, but one where you could see that all took blame (at least partial) for their own faults and mistakes in their marriages. The book also ended on an encouraging note.

Roxanne Henke brings us another unforgettable book with The Secret of Us. The rich theme of love grown stale and replaced by "stuff" is a reality in too many marriages today. Henke has a way with emotion that leaves me wanting more long after the book is over.

Not as useful as it could be.......2000-03-20
Because of the way the book is organized (alphabetically instead of by region), this book isn't as useful for initial planning of a vacation route. It is useful as a resource when you've already figured out where you want to go and what you want to see, however. I also don't like the map that goes with this much. The insets are pretty bad (and only available for Dublin and Belfast). They don't even use one side of the map. If they did they'd have room for better (and more) insets.

Milton H. Erickson is known as the father of modern hypnosis as well as the source for many modern forms of family therapy and brief therapy (including the increasingly popular solution focused therapy).
This seminal book examines the major core strategies that are woven throughout Milton H. Erickson's work. Each strategic principle is broken down into several techniques that share a common function. To help bring to life these clinical strategies, this book contains numerous clinical examples from Erickson (many of these never before published) and others.
In addition, the overarching concepts have been paired with simple analogies, folk wisdom, and illustrations from other schools of psychotherapy. This framework not only helps the reader better understand the interventions and strategies employed by Erickson but more importantly points beyond the finite limits of Erickson's achievements to an ever expanding tradition of exploratory and innovative work by which he was characterized.
Because flexibility is an important hallmark of Erickson's approach to healing, it is clinical understanding rather than rigid rules that must drive the decision-making process. The idea that several different techniques can serve the same function, and the belief that every intervention should be carried out with careful intention comes directly from the teaching of Milton Erickson.
In reading Part I, Foundations of Healing and Health, the reader will be able to recognize fundamental dynamics of healing and of the clinical relationship. Part II, Clinical Strategies, provides a description of each strategy.These are introduced in a broad and simplistic manner, followed by a more elaborate and complex examination of the clinical techniques derived from a given strategy.
Erickson understood how to provide hope to those who no longer felt they could help themselves. He fostered resiliency in his patients through the strategic activation of latent abilities. He believed that all people have within them the answer to whatever challenges they face. Building on a framework of small successes, he reinforced resiliency within the individual by engaging immediate successes that reach into the future.
Milton H. Erickson will continue to be remembered for his determination, patient perseverance, humanity, and unending love of learning. From these he benefited personally while at the same time creating a broader spectrum for the field of psychotherapy and benefiting people around the world, decades after his death. This book will help others follow in his footsteps.

What a system Short offers!.......2007-05-13
Dr. Dan Short has constructed a very cohesive system of describing Milton H. Erickson's therapeutic techniques, perhaps the best I have ever seen. Short's six therapeutic strategies of progression, partitioning, distraction, suggestion, reorientation and utilization are elegant constructs that I believe may well organize all human helping behavior.
This is a extremely well organized and easy to understand treatment of Erickson's ingenious methods and may inspire the reader interested in psychotherapy and other forms of human empowerment to consider the ways in which he or she is practicing the craft.

All my qualification for reading this and reviewing this, is simply the amount of reading I've done in nearly two years now. Covering NLP, hypnosis, REBT and some other odds and ends. So professional, I am not.
The 6 strategies covered, I can see operate in a wider realm. The realm of social influence in fact. Having reread the book several times now, I can see in other therapy modalities these threads running through.
From my own limited understanding, this is certainly an addition to my library that goes way beyond techniques, cookbook formulas and "how-to's". Instead, you have a wider overarching set of concepts to inform therapy in a more flexible, responsive and creative way.
The 6 strategies (it is noted that these are *not* exhaustive, just the main ones to be discussed) are Distraction, Progression, Reframing, Suggestion, Partitioning and Utilisation. On later reflection, I realised where some of these apply to rapport building, persuasion as well as engineering social attitudes.
At the time I was reading Cialdini's Influence, and found that the two books together do give me a way to understand propoganda, advertising and sales. Yet this is certainly not the aim of the book in itself. Like any excellent work, it has wider applications than the authors discuss, or where perhaps consciously aware of at the time?
I highly recommend this to hypnotherapists and therapists of any stripe in actual fact. I also recommend it highly to any student of psychology, counselling, advertising (yes, it's way off the curriculum I'm sure) and any agent of influence.
This of course, is only my perspective as one criticism I've had is the sheer number of books I've read in only 2 years means that surely I can't have processed the skills in them properly. Quite right, but I've enjoyed trying :-).
Like Spending Time with Erickson.......2006-01-28
Hope and Resiliency. Understanding the Psychotherapeutic Strategies of Milton H. Erickson, M.D." is a wonderful book. I had the sense while reading it that I was in Erickson's office and just listening to him talk. This is a consequence of an informal narrative style wherein the book contains many case studies, comments by Erickson, and comments by his daughters and Short. I have not seen some of these studies and commentaries before, and they shed a new and continuingly interesting light on this remarkable man and his works. There are gems like, "Let patients know that they are going to be cured and that it will take place within them." And "Often in psychotherapy a change of reference is all that is needed." and "Erickson's philosophy of healing was characterized by his attention to the goodness of the patient's mind and body.
The heart of the book centers around organizing Erickson's contributions under the categories of: distraction, partitioning, progression, suggestion, reorientation, and utilization. Although it is next to impossible to characterize or systematize Erickson's work in simple packets, this organization does lend itself to an useful set of guidelines to the man and his work.
This book is highly recommended as it provides the reader with some unique perspectives on Erickson's work, his way of working, and many practical ideas.

Two distinct models of psychotherapy are emerging in the 21st century: the empirically based, programmed models and the strategic, humanistic models. Hope and Resiliency will emerge as one of the texts that epitomize the emerging strategic humanistic movements.
In the Milton H. Erickson Foundation Newsletter interview with Scott Miller in the Winter 2005 issue (Vol. 24, No.3), Miller pointed out that techniques and procedures represent only a small percentage of the therapeutic impact in psychotherapy. Instead, it is the therapist's underlying rapport and conviction that makes the difference. Consistent with this strategic humanistic zeitgeist, Hope and Resiliency is more than a mere analysis of Erickson's strategies and techniques. It is a guide in understanding Erickson's perspective on what it means to be human and on what humans can become. Each chapter is a window into the complexity and miracle of what Erickson saw when he watched people interact with their environment and make conscious and unconscious decisions.
An implied assumption in Hope and Resiliency is that if a therapist's internal conviction is that the patient needs fixing, the patient views himself as being broken. If a therapist's internal conviction is that the patient needs curing, the patient views himself as being sick. If a therapist's internal conviction is that the patient already has everything inside that he needs with which to solve his own problem, the patient views himself as being a seeker.
This core section of the book presents strategies for clinical problem-solving. It builds on the core strategies using delightful case examples followed by explanations and elaborations. As one who has read everything about Erickson I can get my hands on, I was happy to discover many previously unpublished examples. As with the first part of the book, the second section is more than a set of how-to techniques. It is an exploration of the roots and branches of Erickson's philosophical tree as seen through concrete applications.
Each subsequent element is presented as though one were looking through a single multi-faceted window into the dynamic maelstrom of humanity. In this way, the authors have avoided having to choose between tactics or strategy by simultaneously presenting each element as both discrete and as an aspect of a larger whole.
I appreciate how the authors elegantly combined the easily readable philosophic elements with practical technique and strategy explanations. At the end of the book there is a summary of pragmatic guidelines that describe contraindications and caveats when applying the strategies with different populations or specific cases. Subsequently, there are concrete exercises that help the practitioner to internalize each of the six strategies.
In the introduction, the authors affirm that, "the content in these chapters is not meant to be memorized as a sort of stale doctrine but rather to serve as a spark for imagination and continued discovery." They are extremely successful in accomplishing their stated goal. It is impossible to read this book without one's mind immediately thinking of how to apply the learnings to one's own patients.
Most importantly, Hope and Resiliency helped me organize many of the learnings I previously internalized from Erickson but did not have pegs upon which to hang the concepts. This is a book I wish I had when I was just starting out. With it I would not have been as intimidated by the immense complexity of Erickson's worldview. To that end, I highly recommend Hope and Resiliency to anyone at any level who values both clarity and the joy of discovery.
