Molly Lou Melon may be tiny, clumsy, buck-toothed, and with a voice "like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor," but she doesn't mind. Her grandmother has utmost confidence in her, and tells her at every turn to believe in herself. "Sing out clear and strong and the world will cry tears of joy," Grandma says. But Molly Lou's self-assurance is put to the test when she moves to a new town, away from her friends and beloved grandmother. During her first week of school, Ronald Durkin taunts Molly Lou Melon in the dull-witted but sharp-edged manner of career bullies, calling her "shrimpo" and "bucky-toothed beaver." Our heroine barely flinches as she systematically sets out to prove herself, and Ronald Durkin ends up feeling pretty foolish.

First-time author Patty Lovell's message is clear and simple, and the theme is familiar enough to strike chords with every reader, young and old. David Catrow, illustrator of Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs, Rotten Teeth, and other popular picture books, depicts a very weird-looking, very appealing little girl with warmth and cartoonish humor. Any child who is less than perfect will cheer with joy to meet Molly Lou Melon, a girl who doesn't let anything--or anyone--shake her belief in herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

"Leave it to Molly to transform all her 'faults' into marvelous talents.. . . [Catrow's] pictures fill the pages with wild perspectives, goofy-looking kids, and hilarious details. . . . Leaves readers with the feeling that anything can be accomplished if you are the best person you can be and make the most of your gifts." (Kirkus Reviews)

"What keeps the storytelling fresh is the crisp prose and the heroine's full-spead-ahead determination. . . . Catrow's full-bleed pencil-and-watercolor illustrations, awash in ripe colors and animated by slapstick exaggeration, radiate a winningly eccentric elegance." (Publishers Weekly)

"The text is fast and funny, and Molly Lou is a fetching little heroine. Catrow's palette is intense. . . . This will make a comic readaloud." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

5 out of 5 stars Book Review by Max, age 8.......2007-08-06

The book's main subject is bullying. The author's main point is that you should be yourself. One of the most interesting things in this book is how Molly Lou ran through the bully's legs and scored a touchdown. In my opinion, this book is funny. I say this because it is silly. Tree is 12 years old and the tallest kid ever in his school: 6-foot-3 and still growing. He's a pretty intelligent and sensible guy and he copes by helping people, like his wonderful grandpa, a Vietnam vet who's just had a leg amputated. But still, being tall leads to problems. Coaches always expect him to be good at sports, even though he tries to explain, "I'm not real athletic." When he meets the father of Sophie, the independent-minded new girl at school, he has to show his birth certificate to prove he's not much older. "I'm tall for my age," says Tree. "You're tall for my age," says Sophie's suspicious father. And dance lessons--! Well, they're a nightmare, especially the tango, where he and Sophie have to replace hand-in-hand with hand-in-elbow, and cheek-to-cheek with cheek-to-chest.

But the thing that really makes Tree's life complicated is not his size but his parents' recent divorce. They have joint custody, so Tree has to divide his life, and he's always needing something he left at the other house. Then disaster strikes, and Tree proves that he has courage to match his size.

Joan Bauer's great heart and dry wit is always a delight, especially in Hope Was Here and Rules of the Road. In Stand Tall she gives us wonderfully interesting characters, funny scenes, zingy lines, and a story that has something warm and beautiful to say to kids. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

In helping his grandpa learn to walk again, and in listening to Sophie's advice that he be himself, Tree begins to heal, to stand tall. But when a flood threatens his town and his home, Tree's newfound confidence is put to the test.

Tree is twelve and taller than most adults, which is something he hates. People tend to turn their attention to him, when he really just wants to blend in. He's expected to be good at sports but really his two older brothers are the athletes in his family and he has very little coordination.

It used to be just his height that was the problem, but this year is the year that Tree's parents decide to get divorced. They waited until his middle brother, Larry, was in college, but they couldn't wait for Tree to be out of the house, too. His mother moved to a new house across town. His father and grandfather and dog stayed in their old home. Every month Tree's mother types up a new schedule telling him where he will be every week. It's very hard for Tree to deal with.

But there are some good things in Tree's life. He and his grandfather are very close, and because he is so big, Tree is able to help his grandfather when his leg is amputated. A new girl has moved into town and she isn't shy about standing up to the mean girls in the eighth grade who make fun of her. She is a good friend for Tree to have, and she starts to teach him to feel better about himself. And then, when a flood hits town, Tree finds that being big can be useful in helping to rebuild.

Tree's introspective way of telling this story was great. I felt like he was a really sensitive kid who was being really honest about everything, and I liked that. I liked the members of Tree's family. They didn't always get along, but they were all interesting and added to the story.

A weakness of the story was the fact that it sort of meandered, without any real conflict or climax. It was well written and interesting, but didn't really resolve much in the end.

5 out of 5 stars Stand Tall.......2007-06-27

All Tree ever wanted was to be normal. He is the tallest boy ever to go Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School. As a 7th grader he stands at 6'3 and a half. As if the teasing and taunting wasn't enough, his parents are also going through a painful divorce.

This is a wonderful story about friendship, family, and standing tall for what you believe in. I highly recommend this uplifting story!

5 out of 5 stars Stand Tall Book review - Mark Spang.......2007-04-29

The book "Stand Talll is about standing tall, physically and emotionally. A 12-year old seventh grade boy named Tree, is already 6 foot-3 inches tall and still growing. Tree faces a lot of hardships both at home and at school. Tree's life is split up into 3 pieces of pie because his parents got a brutal divorce and he also visits his grandpa. The word "divorce" is a living nightmare for Tree because his life got ripped to shreads. His grandpa, his favorite person to visit, has an injured leg from the Vietnam War where he fought fiercely. The grandpa needs a lot of help and support from Tree, but he also gives him excellent advice by comparing a deceitful divorce to a tragic war.

In school, most kids tease Tree, saying he is a tall freak. However, he makes a friend named Sophia, who boosts Tree up. Tree is surprisingly not athletic. He plays basketball, but isn 't very good at it. His coach nags at Tree for not playing well enough. After a tough day at school, Tree still has to hear tedious arguing from his parents. One day, his dog Bradley nearly died of old age, which would have crushed Tree. Then a flood came toward Tree's house and they had to evacuate to his school. When the gruesome flood was over and Tree saw his house was demoliished, everything is destroyed, literally and figuratively. I don't want to give away the end of the novel, but you can tell that this is a story with depth and emotion.

I would highly rcommend this book because the characters show passion for what they want and for what they love most. I would also recommend this book because it is very descriptive and has a lot of bold similes. The characters' actions make you think, "Is this a good person deep down, a supportive, loving person with a tender heart, or a brutal, self-centered, stuborn jerk?" Each character in the novel experiences a significant event, and each one is well developed. I think you would really enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Review by Mirit.......2007-01-05

Stand tall! Standing tall is a metaphor for sticking up for yourself and not letting things such as words hurt you. This book Stand Tall has an amazing message. It shows what happens when people are self-conscious. Then at the same time it shows how the area that you're self-conscious about is a positive feature. It also shows that if you let words or actions get to you then you'll never be happy.
I think that the author, Joan Bauer, really captures the character, Tree, Because she seemed very connected to him. Tree was a seventh grader that had some height self-conscious issues. He also had many other issues to deal with during the duration of this book. He seems to not have many friends too. The good things about this book are that Joan was able to have several conflicts going with Tree, but keep them all under control. When he went through very hard times such as when his grandpa needed help with his leg he seemed to struggle until he met a girl named Sophie who seemed to know how to help. She was a strong character that knew what sticking up was all about. Sophie also went through tough times, but had already learned about letting things get to you and how that can really mess up your life. She helped Tree understand that no ones life is perfect and that there are hard times, amazing times, okay times, and many others.
This book has good quality writing for a teenage book. This book is easy to read because it's about a teenager so it doesn't use complicated words. The good part about that is that you get to focus a lot on the story. Stand Tall is not a slow reader. It seems very climactic so that you want to keep reading it. Almost every chapter something happens that changes Tree's life in a way. An example of that is when a natural disaster occurs and he has a lot of changes to adapt to.
This book is an amazing book and I recommend it to teenagers that need help overcoming self-consciousness and family issues. It helps you get an idea that you're not the only one going through those tough times. It makes people realize that people do care about others and that if you are self-conscious than you should start look at the good things about that area instead of being pessimistic.

4 out of 5 stars Taylor's Review.......2006-10-25

Tree has a problem. He is 6'3" and is only in the 7th grade. His parents just got a divorce, so he's caught in the middle of his parents' arguements. Tree isn't good at basketball, unlike his brothers who are superstar atheletes. When an 8th grade girl named Sophie trys to stand up to a popular girl and gets embarassed, Tree is there for her. Sophie was also there for Tree when his grandpa got his "new leg" after his bad leg was amputated as a result of serving in the Vietnam War. Tree and Sophie stuck together through everything. When Tree's basketball coach made the whole team take ballroom dancing at the YMCA, Tree and Sophie danced together. Later on in about late March or early April, the sand bags for a river in Tree's town, Ripley, don't hold due to a horrible rain storm. Everyone was told to evacuate their houses and go to the Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School. Tree wasn't allowed to take his dog Bradley into the school, so one of his teachers let him put the dog in the school's basement. Tree was worried about Sophie because he didn't see her in the gym and he couldn't get in touch with her. After 2 days of being in the school gym, people were allowed to leave and go to their houses. Tree's brothers, Larry and Curtis, came home from college to help clean up. All three brothers were angry about their parents' divorce. Their grandpa showed them a trick to get the anger out. When they were knocking the sheetrock down with sledgehammers, they slammed them into the wall and got all their anger out.

I recommend this book for kids who have parents going through a divorce or for kids who like to have a long-lasting memory of a book. This book made me think of a lot of things that can happen in everyday life. Things that seem horrible. I leared death helps you celebrate life. War helps you work for peace. Loss helps you reach for a gain. This book is great!

Book Description

The book that inspired the ESPN documentary 151: The Greatest Streak is now Revised and Updated!

By 2002, The Streak—a historic 13-year run of consecutive wins by the Spartans, a high-school football team from Concord, California, that couldn't be beat—was still going strong. In this revised edition of When the Game Stands Tall, author Neil Hayes, who had unrestricted access to the De La Salle team, writes from the inside about the games, the players, and their visionary coach, Bob Ladouceur, who managed to amass the highest winning percentage in football history (.995) through standing for something greater than winning. The book, which also features interviews with major sports figures like Bill Walsh and John Gruden, is a revealing portrait of the coach who believed above all in instilling basic life skills where winning is not the goal, but merely the byproduct of playing the game.

The Streak had become a national story long before it ended in September 2004. In this revised paperback, Neil Hayes catches up on the lives of the main characters and takes readers through the final tumultuous year. What results is a timeless and inspirational story of struggle, tragedy, and triumph.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insight to motivation.......2007-10-18

I thought this book was excellent. Not only is the story of such a remarkable winning streak noteworthy in itself, the story of Coach Bob Ladoceur will change many people's view of the nature of a winning coach. It appears that he and his staff really do care more about their players than about the game and, certainly, The Streak. I learned some key things about what makes high school boys tick and what makes teams accomplish more than they believe they can.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Program.......2006-12-20

This is a very well written book by Neil Hayes. I liked how the author looks back on the past of the De La Salle football team, while going through the present season. Another thing I liked was the way the author made you feel like you were part of the team. A way he made you feel that way was by showing the speeches head coach Bob Ladeucuer speeches before and after the games. I liked that Neil Hayes followed the team around to show the more in-depth look at one of the most well known High School teams. I especially liked the speech after their first lose in the 2004 season. Overall I thought this was an extremely good book and I would recommend this to anyone who would enjoy a good sports history novel. This was a great read and was easy for me to understand. I also liked the pictures they had in the book to show what the players were like.

5 out of 5 stars The best of what's around.......2006-07-04

This book is about so much more than football. I am a high school English teacher, but my sports background allows me to appreciate the importance of developing the whole student-to celebrate not only the essays they write, but also the great blocks and hits they have on the field, or the great music they create. Lad and the DLS coaching and teaching staff are successful at doing exactly that: developing whole young men who are thoughtful, respectful, and disciplined in the way a man needs to be as they face the world outside of the classroom, develop meaningful relationships, and eventually become fathers themselves. Thank you so much Coach Lad for allowing Neil Hayes to write this book and inspire the rest of us, football coaches, teachers, parents-to do our best by our boys so they can be their best.

5 out of 5 stars A great example of what happens when you keep the main thing the main thing........2006-04-27

Not everybody that read this book liked it, judging from the other reviews here.
What I appreciated about the book was the look at coach Lad, and what he emphasized in his coaching.
It seemed that he was most concerned with challenging his players to be disciplined, to work hard, to love each other, and to grow in maturity. He uses football to do it, and I would say that he is very good. De La Salle's winning streak is a symptom of a much deeper, more profound success that that football team is experiencing. I love this book because it shows that when you love your players, and they love each other and are willing to work to show each other that love, then winning happens.

5 out of 5 stars When The Game Stands Tall.......2006-04-03

I have had the privilege to play for the De La Salle Spartans on the J.V. level. Although I have never played on var yet, I know what it is to play for the Spartans. There is a brotherhood of love and Unity, that is the key to winning. I know ther is no recruiting, people want to come to De La Salle for more than sports,to learn more about themselves and their lives. After all, the motto is "Enter to learn, leave to serve", and that is exactly what the school and football program do. I would recommend this book to anybody looking for an inspirational guts and glory story.

5 out of 5 stars Know Where We Stand, Then We Know Where We Are.......2002-03-16

My understanding and practice of landscaping is limited to the home and garden variety. Even at this level of home maintenance my skills and interests are limited. And I should be vacationing at a national park, say, the Grand Canyon or Yosemite, I would be as Moses standing on Pisgah taking in the general effect of the scenery from a distance. It comes as an entirely new revelation then, for one to be connected to or be part of a landscape takes more than Scott's fertilizers for the lawn, bordered fences, or sightseeing the Yosemite Valley.

After accepting a teaching position at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the author and her poet husband make their home in the Finger Lakes Region at upstate New York. There, the author begins her interrogative journey on this vast landscape of terra incognita and eventually finding herself (and does her family) to belong to the land(scape) and not merely as a transient trampling through it with indifference.

The book is repleted with historical anecdotes, myths, and local interests. It's is not a technical tome about geography, history, and anthropology of the Finger Lakes. Rather, this is the author's journal of how she strives to be with the land upon she dwells. As the author discovers, the landscape is the embodied lessons of the past for the present, and instructions for the future. The scenery of a place is only a prop. Without a landscape there can be no scenery. And that what makes this book rare and instructive.

Deborah Hall's work has filled a void in my understanding of our culture. I now think more about the history, the town, and the neigbhorood (including neighbors) where I live. Perhaps too, I will come to know the land where I stand, and not just my own lawn.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner.......2005-03-31

This book is written for the writer who has solid writing skills (description, dialog, tone, etc.) and a solid idea or set of ideas but can't decide how to convey those ideas. In other words, you have a solid feel for the characters, and you know at least your major plot turns, but you have specific, underlying ideas you want to convey, and you're not sure how to effectively express them. Essentially, it's for the author who's trying to write more than a basic thriller or other escapist novel (and he gives some solid recommendations for writers working on those types of stories, as well).
Tobias consistently reminds us that everything in a story should support the theme, and 'everything' covers a lot of ground, so he looks at theme as it affects a wide variety of story elements. He clearly states that some types of stories emphasize certain elements and other types emphsize others. In essence, he is giving guidelines for writers to plan their writing and organize a story based on the elements most common to a particular theme.
One reviewer was upset that Tobias states there are only five major themes. Actually, Tobias says the pattern of a story will usually take one of five forms, based on the theme of the story. In another book (20 Master Plots), he points out that Aristotle believed there were only two plots, forza and forda, while Tobias describes twenty (I highly recommend that book, as well). Tobias isn't trying to stick every writer in a box, he's trying to help them take the shortest possible path toward writing the story they want to write.

This isn't the book to go to when you're learning how to write. Try Damon Knight's Creating Short Fiction or Rust Hills' Writing In General and the Shoft Story In Particular. This is the book you go to when you have something to say, when you finally find a story and characters that are important to you, and you want to make sure you do them justice.

3 out of 5 stars Don't say I didn't warn you.......2005-02-02

This book is subtitled how to build a strong narrative structure. In fact, the book is not about structure at all. It is about pattern-a different thing. And even the discussion of pattern is a mishmash: "Pattern in Strategy, Pattern of Audience, Pattern in Structure, Pattern in Plot, Pattern in Action, Pattern in Character, Pattern in Thought, Pattern in Place, Patterns in Style." (This is the table of contents.) The statements in each chapter are equally vague: "Strategy is both map and journey." You understand that? Perhaps as inspiration or as communication by osmosis this book might be useful. But what results will you obtain? There's the risk.
The discussion of theme follows--if you'll forgive the expression--the same pattern. "Theme is...the central concern around which a story is structured." (p. 97) It is your "inertial guidance system." It is a "viable, working pattern." There are exactly five types of theme (no more and no less): theme as plot, theme as emotion effect, theme as style, theme as character, theme as idea. Got it? Good. This book is for you. But if you're saying, "Huh? Say what?", then you'd better find some book that knows what it's talking about well enough to say it clearly.

4 out of 5 stars Quality overview of narrative structure.......2004-09-25

I have to take exception with the two previous reviewers who claim "Theme and Strategy" is merely okay. Although the book is geared to beginners (like most in this series), it nonetheless unfolds the critical aspects of structure, which will help any aspiring writer take their work to a new level. The mastery of narrative structure is perhaps the most crucial element to any work of narrative fiction, therefore the better a writer understands it the better prepared that writer will be to turn out a quality product. This book, and others like "Story", help get us there.

Tobias' writing is lucid, which allows him to communicate some fairly esotric subject matter with necessary clarity. He synthesizes complex ideas into easily understood chunks without sacrificing depth. This makes it easy, then, for the new writer to take the plunge into a richer universe where theory blends well with practical application. Not an easy task as many books either fly into the ether of pretensious literary theory or the muck of over-simplified formula. Tobias straddles the line precariously, but still manages to maintain his balance and focus.

Frankly, those looking for a step by step guide to plotting a story should reconsider the writing path, because writing fiction is a quirky blend of craft and talent. And while talent will only take you so far, the same is true of craft. Tobias, however, will help bridge that gap if you're ready to take the journey.

Theme and Strategy is required reading for those writers looking to master their craft, but not for those looking for cookbook solutions. It makes an excellent contribution to this fine series.

3 out of 5 stars His other book is better..........2003-07-31

This book is ok.
It talks from a top-down viewpoint instead of getting into the nitty-gritty of plotting.
A very large portion of the book is in Tobias sharing pieces of literature as examples to support his ideas/story analysis. This was good and bad. Good because it seemed to give credibility to what he was saying but Bad because if you remove the examples he could have presented all his points on two or three pages.

He touches briefly (even with an appendix in the back) on the 36 different plot types. Interesting thing is fours years later he writes a more detailed book entitled, 20 Master Plots. What happened to the other 16? His second book is better in my opinion when it comes to planning what type of story you want to write from a theme/strategy point of view.

I would recommend the Marshall Plan of Novel Writing or The Weekend Novelist if you want a very structured, detailed approach to plotting. Use the Tobias books for overall concept but don't think you can use it to help you create a major plot piece. This is a great book for beginners, but I'd check your local library before dishing out the bucks for this hardback.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginner writers.......2001-11-07

I got this book in a local library. It has the basic ideas for beginner writers, who have absolutely no idea of how to do it. It talks about strategies of writing and what you should do before and while writing your book. The explanations are very long, and sometimes it seems that Ronald Tobias was just trying to write more pages. Although the book is divided into many parts, I rarely saw any difference between any of them. They seem to say few ideas over and over in different words with different examples. In other words, if you want some light reading, 100% guarantee that you'll get what he's saying, you're a beginner, and you have enough free time, read this book. Otherwise, don't. I'm sure I can write everything he wrote in 20 pages.

Book Description

From the formation of this "sea of grass" to the settlers who worked the prairie, this history interweaves the natural and human elements that made the grasslands what they are today. Although this terrain has become our greatest hope for survival--miraculously absorbing and transforming pollution into food for the grasses and, eventually, for humans--no ecosystem faces more danger. What can we do to conserve this special landscape? Through copious illustrations and sidebars taken from diaries, letters, folk tales, music, poetry, recollections, interviews, and other writings, follow the relationship between Americans and the "fruited plains": the European immigrants who broke the land with the plow; the Indians who first inhabited the range; the cowboys and cowgirls who loved the open skies; and the lives of modern-day ranchers.

5 out of 5 stars Last Stand of the Tall Grass Prairie.......2007-01-04

This is an outstanding coffee table book for folks who appreciate or want to know more about the history and what is happening to the Tall Grass Prairie. Having worked with landowners and producers in the Flint Hills of Kansas (last large area of the tall grass prairie), I recommend the book and the video it supports (Last Stand of the Tall Grass Prairie). The Tall Grass Prairie is a vanishing resourse form lack of proper management and fragmentation (urban sprawl).

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Novel of the West.......2007-03-02

Full disclosure: For several years, I worked for Five Star Publishing, heading up their romance, women's fiction and science fiction & fantasy imprints. I was never directly involved in the Westerns line. In the forthcoming anthology LOST TRAILS, which I co-edited with Martin H. Greenberg, a story by Mr. Boggs appears.

Johnny D. Boggs has won two Spur Awards, a Western Heritage Award, and may be one of the hardest-working Western writers in the business today. A quick look at his website shows a total of more than 30 full length books, almost as many short stories, plus a ton of non-fiction work and a long background in journalism.

I've read a number of Mr. Boggs' books over the years, CAMP FORD and THE DESPOILERS to name a couple, but WALK PROUD, STAND TALL is, for my money, his best novel to date. And I don't say that lightly.

Reminescent of THE SHOOTIST, this moving novel tells us the story of Lin Garrett (no relation to Pat in blood or morals), a long-retired lawman who ends up broke, busted-down, and with nowhere left to go except COCONINO COUNTY HOSPITAL FOR THE INDIGENT. In short, he's at the end of his trail.

In bits and pieces, Mr. Boggs skillfully weaves the past and the present, telling the story of how Lin got his reputation as a great lawman - and how he ended up where he did. A distinct and memorable cast of characters, including his lost love Holly Grant, his old partner Randolf Corbett, and the outlaw he once let live, Ollie Sinclair, come into the story and add heart to it in unexpected ways.

I'm not going to say much more about the plot here, because in this case, the only thing to say is: GET A COPY AND READ IT. Even though Five Star's hardcovers are expensive, this is one of those books that's worth every penny. What it lacks in length (at only 234 pages) it more than makes up for in depth, skill of writing and extraordinary grace. An outstanding novel of the West at the end of the frontier days, and a very, very well done character study.

3 out of 5 stars The Past Meets The Present........2006-10-21

Written by the author of CAMP FORD, about a Civil War baseball game between Union prisoners of war and Confederates guards (not Forrest), here we find a strange tale of Marshall Lincoln Garrett in his elder years as he returned home to Flagstaff. He hated being old (now seventy), hurting in places he never knew esisted. But he learned all over again that you don't threaten people with sudden death even when you're not a lawman any longer. It can get you killed or, at the least, in a lot of trouble.

Percival Lowell from Boston had built an observatory in Flagstaff in 1894, not far from Prescott. A visitor who had arrived on the same train as Lin mistook him as a carrier or someone sent to transport him to the observatory. He was demanding as he mistakenly summoned him to deliver his heavy baggage and himself to Mars Hill. Garrett decided that the rude stranger probably came from Mars, in outer space, "odd as that bird was." Astronomer Lowell had a theory he was working on called Planet X, a ninth planet, ans was expecting this Mr. Slipher.

Three bandidoes intervened and decided to take what wasn't theirs in the only way they knew how, and there was a shoot-out. Liars always tripped up somewhere, and the future will change for everyone over this altercation. Sometimes, the past just can't be lived down. Marshall Garrett had spent some years in prison and was now indigent and willing and needing the three dollars he was to be paid to deliver him up the hill. However, he did not know how to start the old automobile. The rest goes from there, after the attempted holdup by the three dudes. He was on his way to see a woman he and Sinclair both had loved a long time in the past. Of course, he was expecting Holly Grant not to have aged at all. Old men dream dreams, young men get sidetracked along the way. It's just a way of life back then and also now in the hereafter.

5 out of 5 stars Paying it forward . . ........2005-11-30

I had the honor of working with Ole Carlson at a recent workshop. At first I didn't really connect Carlson with the book I had just finished reading prior to the workshop. About an hour into the meeting I realized that the speaker was advocating some of the very principles from the book that I had so heavily marked up and reread several times.

What a delight! And what hard work - Carlson walks the talk, and he definitely put us through our paces. And this book will do the same for those who take the time to read it. Beneath the Armor is filled with straight forward talk about the leaders at the top of Business. At the end of each chapter is a review and a list of actions to take based on the information we just read. It is a practical, put it to work book for CEOs.

Chapter titles give us an idea of the clarity this book will bring to the serious leader: 1. Be Authentic - it is easier to Remember; 2. Take Care of Yourself First - then others; 3. Lead the Organization - Let Other Manage it; 4. Value Resiliency over Brilliancy; 5. It is All About the People; 6. Understanding Your Numbers is Not Optional; and 7. Have a Well-Lubricated Reverse Gear. Written in deceptively easy and conversational style, each chapter turns out to be chock full of solid strategy and finishes with a call to action. Reading this book did in fact change the direction of my consultancy.

More importantly, this book in conjunction with spending four days in a workshop with Ole Carlson changed my life - for the better. This is a must read for leaders and those who coach and/or consult with business leaders. To quote Mr. Carlson, "The message in this book comes from you and your peers and I am simply paying it forward."

5 out of 5 stars Beneath the Armor.......2005-06-26

This is a great book, and it is a must read for all CEO's of small to mid-size companies. The author is at home with the subject, and the reader will feel as though Ole is writng directly to you. His message is simple, but the simplicity is its magic. This book made me laugh, think more deeply about my role, and shed tears of joys and struggles as I reflected upon my own journey.

I will read this book annually to keep myself fresh and to remember my role as a CEO.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Leadership Lessons.......2004-07-14

Ole's book really underscored, for me, the primary lessons of leadership. I especially appreciated his writing style and approach that actually made these seven strategies seem do-able for once. The stories about how these played out in real life companies has the recommendations really hit home. I plan to give Ole's book as a gift to my clients and busines associates. I feel certain this will be one book gift they will actually read and put into action!

5 out of 5 stars Practicle ahds on advise.......2004-07-11

A very credible and practicle book which is fortunately based on real experience with multiple CEOs of medium size companies throughout the world. I learned a great deal, enjoyed reading it and bought several copies as gifts for my friends.

Very much recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars 'Armor' Makes Running A Business Visible.......2004-07-06

Ole Carlson's `Beneath The Armor' makes running a business visible. Finished reading the book about 5 weeks ago- started putting to work the sage perspective, real world experience and relevant challenges for life, leadership and making a difference. Seems to me this is an owner or CEO handbook for the new and tenured- however it readily applies to any person seeking to become more effective in life, business, in the role of leading. Make sure each of your key reports reads a copy and start transforming your organization by putting the key points that resonant to work in your culutre and behavior. Each of the seven chapters clearly presents the focus, the key points, supports with 'believable examples and stories', and concludes with a key point summary and specific steps to put the points to work. `Armor' is like having seven 1 to 1's with a skilled, experienced mentor. Read it to learn, to remember, to set the bar higher, to refresh, to put into action. Clearly written- like having a conversation that really matters.

I found this book several years ago through Scholastic and my 2 daughters love it. It is a great story about how Molly Lou Melon is different than other kids and for her to be proud of herself. It teaches them that it is okay to be different. The pictures in the book are incredible.
